Fantastic Taiwanese and Chinese offerings. Lunch special during the week of 25 offerings- all for $6-7 each, including main plate, soup, egg roll, and drink - was the best bargain I've had in years. It worked: I'll be going back! Order some steamed dumplings to complement your main course. Wait staff diligent, friendly, professional!

I'm amazed at some of the favorable reviews here for this restaurant ("best Chinese food in Louisville"??!! -- not even close!). I was there for lunch, not dinner, so maybe that makes a difference. First off, they have the single most boring menu I have ever seen. There was not one thing on there that I haven't seen a hundred times at any other Chinese restaurant. The egg drop soup was absolutely terrible. It was basically colored water. The sweet and sour soup was slightly better. The entrees were OK, but again not the least bit interesting. While I was there I heard a person at another table ask the server, "Now, what is chop suey?", so perhaps that's the crowd to which this place is catering. Indeed, if you've never before heard of beef and broccoli...chicken and pea pods...pork and broccoli...then maybe you'll like it here just fine. I do agree with a previous reviewer that they have the A/C on way too strong (though, since the restaurant is in a strip mall, they may not have control over that). I will also mention that all the people there are very friendly. Our waitress was pleasant and didn't mind at all when we sent the egg drop soup/water back to the kitchen. A lady who looked like she might have been the owner stopped by our table and was very very friendly. I'll also mention that the restaurant is beautifully decorated and my booth was comfortable. However, the food here leaves a lot to be desired. Boring, boring, boring.

Very good Chinese! The orange beef was fantastic and had a nice spicy kick. The honey chicken was a nice twist on sweet and sour - different but very good. I will definitely return.

We tried this place for carryout on Christmas eve and expected run of the mill Chinese food. Boy was I wrong. The food was awesome. We are looking foward to going back to try their aubentic Chinese menu. I would recommend you try this place._

With only minor inconsistencies, the food here is very reliably good. The menu offers much variation with something to please most tastes. The quantities are good and depending on how many appetizers we order we often have enough left for lunch or even dinner the next day!

Passing through Louisville on a road trip, my family and I made our usual survey on Yelp for Asian restaurants. I don't usually go to Chinese restaurants as I don't like Americanized Chinese food. Very glad I went to Peking City Bistro; this is a really good Chinese restaurant. Don't let the strip mall exterior fool you. Inside there is a great decor and fantastic Chinese food. The standard menu includes Americanized Chinese food in the front and an "Authentic" menu in the back. The authentic menu includes both English and Chinese names for the dishes. Descriptions are provided in English. As previous Yelpers have mentioned, the portion sizes are very ample. Four of us were able to eat our fill with two dishes. Our family of five was able to eat for $28 before tip. A really great deal for a fantastic meal. Now for the food. Two of us started with the Chinese pancake (). My wife and daughter really enjoyed it and said it had a very authentic flavor. We ordered Chinese broccoli off the authentic menu and Five Spice Fish off the daily special menu that we saw when we entered the restaurant. The Chinese broccoli had a great authentic flavor and was prepared just like what I've had in China and Taiwan. The Five Spice Fish was delicious. Very fragrant and flavorful. The service was pretty decent and the waitress was attentive, although there weren't too many other diners there at the time we were there. All in all, I'd give this restaurant a solid 4. We didn't try enough other dishes for me to rate it higher, although there are plenty of other dishes I'd like to try (hot pot, anyone??). If you find yourself in Louisville and are looking for authentic Chinese food, look no further than Peking China Bistro. Highly recommended.

Love this place. Great food, and really nice folks running the place. Try the vegetable dumplings, they are fantastic!

Update: my office ordered from here the other day. We didn't have a copy of the Taiwanese menu available, so we all ordered from the American menu. It was good, but it didn't blow me away and make me cry like the Taiwanese menu did. I HIGHLY suggest the patrons order from the authentic menu and the restaurant starts carrying the Chinese menu online.

My wife is very finicky about Chinese food and I had read the reviews on Peking City Bistro. We walked in an hour before closing and had some of the best Chinese food we've had in a long time. My wife eats vegetarian and the vegetarian steamed dumplings were out of this world. My Szechuan chicken had just the right amount of kick to it, Needless to say we're glad that we dropped in there and plan on becoming regulars.

Dont know what it is about Louisville Kentucky but the food here and compared to the other chinese restaurant are just not good and a waste of money. Not authentic in any way... Robert San Francisco

Peking City is a gradual love for me. I come to appreciate it more after each visit. The staff is friendly and the setting is nice enough to bring a date. The food portion is large at a reasonable price. You'll let lots of great dishes not found in your other Chinese restaurants. Ask for the authentic Chinese menu for a variety of exotic options. I love the calamari for appetizer, it comes with lots of onion, peppers and a side of delicious tangy sauce. For a cold day choose from a variety of hot soups such as the large and popular beef noodle or the many hot pots. For the adventurous why not try the pig intestine. If you're a traditional kind of person, orange chicken and gung bo chicken will satisfy your taste buds.

First stop here on my search of great Chinese in Louisville wish I could say I found it. Hot & Sour soup had really good flavor but had little of substance other than broth. Spicy pork was good lots of crisp veggies & tender pork in a nice sauce but not remarkable. Hot tea was good service was friendly & quick.

Good Chinese food is difficult to find. If you are reading this, then you have found it. Peking City Bistro is one of the best I have had in a very long time. I drive from Lexington to Louisville, just to eat here. It is worth it. My only problem is, every time I try anything on the menu, I don't want to try anything else. That becomes my new favorite until I force myself to try something new. I have not had a bad meal here. The service is exactly what you expect from a restaurant with this quality of food ... excellent. Don't let the modest strip mall front scare you off ... you are at the right place. Go inside. You will not be disappointed.

Delicious food. Friendly staff. More than enough food at a great price. Get the chicken lettuce wraps. Just do it. They're amazing!

I'm not a fan of takeout Chinese food, that being said, I've NEVER been disappointed by this place! I've eaten here numerous times, both in the dining room and for takeout, the service and the food are always great, no matter what dish I try or when I come. I'd recommend the crispy beef or prawns with orange peel and a scallion pancake. I'd also say to go on "off hours" because the dining room is full during typical dinner hours. The atmosphere is a bit upscale and while I wouldn't go out of my way to dress up to come, I wouldn't wear a tshirt.

After hearing some great reviews and the urgings of a fellow yelper, I returned to Peking City, armed with renewed hope and expectations. I was rewarded with perfectly cooked Taiwanese dishes this time! I must have just ordered the wrong things the last time I was here. My cousin and I ordered from the Chinese menu; Fried little fish: 3-4in long whole sardines(with heads and bones) coated with a light batter and deep fried, then stir fried with green onion, hot peppers and salt...they are also full of roe...so crunchy and yummy! Braised brisket: super tender, soft brisket braised in a soy and star anise based sauce that is also slightly spicy. Braised pork belly: pork belly with layers of tender skin, fat and meat, so soft and melt-in-your-mouth slippery. Oh, so wrong oh so good and I dont give a damn! This comes on a bed of Shanghai Bok Choy to cut down on the guilt...just a little bit. My cousin and I are both seasoned Chinese food eaters and we could not stop raving about the food. Cousin is so happy I brought her here. We will definitely be back for more. One more thing: Peking City Bistro is one of the few ethnic restaurants that can actually be praised on its décor. It is modern Asian: minimalist with personality. I'll even say it is more intimate than most other Asian restaurants.

Peking City Bistro rocks! Stopped there for lunch a couple of weeks ago. Food was excellent, and service was as good. Price was about what you would expect. Would I eat there again? Certainly.

Was decent. I was expecting something different from traditional Chinese since this place is categorized as "Tiawanese" but it was no different than the standard. Our waitress was a bitch. I ordered lo mein, and when she asked what kind of rice I wanted, I questioned that it came with rice. She treated me like an idiot, so I said steamed I guess. She then realized her mistake and I saw he face turn red. Don't be mean just because I'm not Chinese.

Wonderfully authentic Chinese food in Louisville of all places! The dishes off the Chinese menu are as interesting and good quality as anything you could get in a bigger city. If you're feeling adventurous, eschew the American menu and just ask the chef to make you the specialties. The decor is also intimate and classy - reminiscent of P.F. Chang's but less of that big-chain feel.

Thanks, Yelpers, for guiding us to this fabulous restaurant! We've been searching for a good and not-too-pricey Asian restaurant in town and now we've found it. Nice atmosphere, pleasant and efficient staff, and yum-yum-yummy food. The steamed dumplings, in particular, are must-trys. We'll be frequenting this bistro for certain.

Every dish is prepared fresh. Beef noodle soup was in a bowl so huge, my wife and I could not finish it together. Awesome flavor!

On US 60, on your way out to the Gene Snyder, sits an unassuming Chinese bistro serving up surprisingly good food in a fun setting. Tasked with finding authentic ethnic eats in this part of town with a decent-sized group, whose members included a mom and a baby, I relied on my Magic 8-Ball Yelp app to work some magic... and work some magic, it did. From the time you enter, you feel at ease. Not only does the red & black motif please the eye, the hostess and wait staff are all so friendly, you're made to feel as though you're walking in to a long-lost relative's house, rather than a restaurant. The venue has ample seating in table and booth form so no matter your needs, they're sure to be met. Seated? Comfortable? Let's eat. Start with a pot of hot tea for $1.75. I love drinking tea when eating Chinese food and was pleased at the selection. It's not extensive, but I had choices other than the ubiquitous green. Wait a second before you sip, though. This tea is HOT! Since I was already drinking hot tea, I suppose it made sense to order some hot & sour soup. This used to be my go-to soup before a bad experience ran me to the arms of egg drop. I'm pleased to say I am a fan again. PCB's hot & sour had a wonderfully spicy kick and finish to every slurp. It's also a decent-sized amount so if ordering soup, try to split an entree with a friend. I didn't know to do this so I ordered the Szechuan Pork as my main dish. First things first: the plate was huge. Looking at it, I knew there was no way I was going to get through it all, so I committed to eating half and having a nice lunch on the next day. Served with white rice and more vegetables than a farmer's market, the pork was deliciously spicy. The combined textures of all three elements made for a meal that didn't bore. Sometimes Chinese food (for me) can become routine -- boring. This meal held my interest for the entirety of my stay. I love to see new business open in this eastern portion of Middletown and I'm glad to see the response has been so positive. You don't have to go (where do you go for Chinese food in Louisville) for good Chinese, Middletowners. Dinner is served just down the street!

Very good authentic Chinese food. I had the beef noodle soup and the pan-fried dumplings and they were both very delicious. I will be back soon.

This place tucked into a strip mall and you could almost miss it as you drive past, BUT it is worth it. It was immaculately clean inside, service was quick and courteous. The food was amazingly fresh, and fairly authentic. We will be back for certain!

This place was good when we found it 2 years ago. We come all the way here from Lexington every other month. However, it disappointed us greatly recently: both the quality of service and food went down drastically. For instance, the fish belly soup we ordered was terrible. I happen to know how to prepare the dish myself, and I noted that the fish belly was not well prepared, making it both pungent and tough. We tried to inquire about the situation politely, but the response we got was cold and distant. We are really disappointed and will never go to this place anymore nor recommend it!

I work less than a half mile away from this place so I've been there at least a dozen times over the last couple of years. They are always good, not great. I mean there's something to be said for being consistently good. The value on their lunch menu is incredible. You get an eggroll, soup, rice and an entree. More than enough food (for me but for a big eater would be just right) to save for dinner too. I have to conclude that maybe it's that I'm just not wowed by Chinese food because when I really think about it there's nothing in particular they could do better. Okay MAYBE their eggrolls could be better but really that's just being picky because they are decent-good. My fiancé would give this place five stars. Every time he comes to have lunch with me at work this is where he wants to go and he loves it. All in all you can't go wrong with this place, in my opinion. Good prices and good food.

I was in the area for business and stopped here for a quick lunch. I had the miso soup and the pan fried dumplings. Both were delicious and the staff was quick and friendly. If I'm in the area again I will be stopping here again.

My friend and I came for Lunar New Years after reading great Yelp reviews. Peking City Bistro looks to be one of the highest rated Chinese restaurants in the area that had actual Chinese dishes. The decor itself is nice, seems very clean and open. For dinner, we ordered XLB, tofu w/ mixed vegetables, and beef w/ peppers and onions. The XLBs were decent, but there wasn't much soup in them and the texture was more like a dumpling. I liked the tofu w/ mixed veggies but was semi-disappointed by the vegetable offerings. The menu didn't have the usuals (watercress, spinach w/ garlic, etc.) but then again, we are in Louisville. Our waiter was very friendly and came to check up on us several times. Overall, seems like a great family establishment.. I'll plan to come back in the future. I'd give Peking City Bistro a 4, though this is inflated relative to other Chinese restaurants in the area.

I have been to this AMAZING place twice in two weeks and I have to say that the variety and flavor is amazing!!! I tried the shrimp lo mien and it has a very good distinct flavor. The calamari is also wonderful. This is now my favorite spot.

Without doubt this is one of two authentic Chinese restaurants in Louisville. If you like Chinese food and know good from ersatz this is worth the trip. They have an "Americanized" menu with many fabulous dishes Szechwan and Cantonese. The authentic menu is excellent for those who look for this type of stuff. The service is excellent and the place is clean.

    (5)
  • Josh H.

Excellent Chinese restaurant! The portion sizes are more than enough for any meal. The lettuce wraps and calamari are a personal favorite - I cannot recall having a better version of either from anywhere else. The staff is nice. The atmosphere is usually a little lacking, only because the place is typically empty or very near it. It is definitely worth stopping in to check out. If you do, make sure to note that they have two sections to their menu: typical Chinese dishes, and authentic Chinese.

Oh God. The sodium content in my dish might kill me in my sleep tonight. I ordered off the Taiwanese menu (I thought) but it was clearly the wrong order. I got the onion pancake, which had insufficient onion. It was about 99% pancake. I also ordered the salt and pepper prawns. I have ordered salt and pepper squid at other restaurants, and it was amazing. I thought perhaps I would have another good experience. Wrong. The prawns came heavily breaded, and with about three times the necessary salt content. However, the staff are nice, the atmosphere is pleasant, there is plenty of parking, and the clientele is racially mixed, so I plan to return and order something else. I think they deserve a second chance.

I have been to this restaurant more than once and evidently the service is spotty. Tonight was awful. one entree came out before the others. The 2nd came out about 10 minutes after the first. then 3 & 4 came out about 15 minutes later. The person who got the first entree was completely finished by the time three and four came out. Drinks were not refilled. There was no checking back in to see if everything was okay. Extremely disappointed. Will have second thoughts about ever going back. I had the orange chicken. It was described as lightly battered. It was heavily battered and would not order again.

    (2)
  • Rebecca C.

I love this little gem. They have the best egg rolls. The spicy mustard is on point. I always make sure to order two because one just leaves me wanting more. The steamed dumplings also are very good. I did get the orange chicken once and found it too sweet for my taste but others in my party loved it. The vegetarian menu is wonderful. I love the mushrooms and pea pods best for a meal.

So disappointed to have to write a bad review for one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. The poor review is for the service only; the food was awesome as always! I will give them a break because it was Christmas Eve and they were busy, but delivering meals 10-15 minutes apart is pretty inexcusable for any decent establishment, especially when there were only three of us. By the time my meal came out, my wife and daughter were all but finished eating. I also had one beer and never a chance for a refill beyond that...they were busy , but I've seen them just as busy and service wasn't a problem.

I've only been here once, even though I have heard so many things about it, and that was for lunch. But, that one time left a great impression that I intend to see if it can be reinforced with further visits. So far, the twice-cooked pork (there known as Double Cooked Pork) is spot-on what it should be, and the five-flavor fish is an absolute treat. I cannot wait to go back for dinner and try their authentic menu so I can update this review further. Oh...service was pretty snappy, and the place appeared spotless.

All told, I've been to Peking City Bistro more than 30 times. What keeps me coming back? The food is great and I've yet to have a bad meal there. The American-Chinese menu is rather dull, so I suggest grabbing one of the thicker, authentic Chinese menus from the shelf by the register. Or, you know, ask for one. The service is usually good, but one waitress (who's been there since they opened) has been known to leave our water cups empty for most of the meal. The rest of the staff is very gracious and quick to assist in any way needed. But, to be fair, I've been there so often, I feel comfortable grabbing straws, booster seats, or silverware rolls if they're forgotten, so maybe the service can be a little rougher than you'd expect at the price point. The food itself is great. Even the dull American fare really pops--the general Tsos in particular is truly spectacular. But when you look around the restaurant, you'll notice most of the Chinese families present are ordering from the family-style Chinese menu. Do give it a try, if you're feeling bold. Pork intestines are better than they sound on paper, I promise. As another Yelper mentioned, the hot and sour soup is certainly the best I've ever had at a Chinese restaurant, so order the double-sized bowl. You won't regret it!

We were coming to Louisville for a wedding and stopped here for dinner on the recommendation of my brother in law. We all agreed this is one of the best Chinese food we had ever eaten. My wife had the Szechwan pork, our daughter on law had Moo Go Gai Pan, our son had Mu Shu Pork, and I had one of the best Chinese dishes I have ever had (5 Flavor Fish) was to die for! We shared the steamed dumplings as an appetizer which did not disappoint. The service was exceptional and the prices are very reasonable. We will be back on our next visit to Louisville.

This restaurant has both "authentic" items as well as more "average" items, in case you want to have Chinese food with someone who is not as into ethnic food. Fortunately, it seems to me that the more Americanized options here are pretty good--not just generic food court type entrees added on to the menu. I've been to this restaurant maybe 2 or 3 times, for both lunch and dinner. Everything I ordered was fresh--no canned mushrooms or mushy vegetables. I haven't been disappointed by any of the things I've ordered. The last time I went, I ordered the Szechuan chicken lunch special. I wasn't really blown away by the soup, but then again, lunch combo soup at a Chinese restaurant is rarely that great. The entree on the other hand was quite good--a little bit spicy, but not unbearable. One thing to keep in mind is that the place is air conditioned almost too well--I was freezing after just a couple of minutes in the place (this was late July, 2011). I'll bring a jacket the next time I go.

Food: I liked the veggie dish and the taste was good, although it was not what I was looking for (I forgot it's a Taiwanese restaurant so the cooks tend not to use much source and spices). We were not happy with the pork because they only served less than 10 pieces and it was not worth of the price. Service: they did have a good business that night, but that didn't mean they should leave us alone for a long time. We were waiting to refill tea and water and found out the owner or the waitress just passed by without asking. I care about the taste and the quality, but I would feel respected if the owner would come to talk with me for just five seconds. Environment: that's the best part of this trip, and you would love to stay longer. I would recommend people to try but not who of them are looking for an authentic Chinese restaurant.

We were there on a business trip. Found this place on yelp. The food there is considered so authetic even for a person like me coming from San Francisco where a lot of great Chinese food are. The Taiwanese Beef noodle soup is great! The waitresses are very attentive and helpful. Karen gave us a lot of advise on local areas. This place is well decorated and amazing! So impressive to find such a place where there is few Chinese people at all.

Wow. Authentic Chinese food on Louisville. Make sure to order from the real Chinese menu. Shredded pork with bean curd and tea smoked duck are excellent.

High quality Chinese food- there is an Americanized menu and a separate Chinese menu. We ordered from both-everything came out hot, fresh, and prepared with good quality ingredients. My honey chicken was made with large chunks of breast meat, was lightly breaded and presented with lovely garnishes. I highly recommend the pan fried dumplings- great flavor and a good meat to wrapper ratio. Good service as well.

  • J H L.

Easily one of the best Chinese restaurants in Louisville, and I've tried almost all of them. Make sure you skip all the Americanized choices (skip the chow mein, egg foo young, etc.) and stick with the authentic choices, which seem to be in the back half of the big menu. A friend swears by the beef stew noodle soup, so it's next on my list of things to try. Everything I've tried so far has been amazing. Taiwanese food also tends to be not as greasy or heavy as tradtional Chinese, but just as flavorful and varied. Definitely worth trying!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
