The Mag Bar remains very near and dear to my heart for a few reasons: One, it served as my neighborhood bar during my grad school days, and many nights were spent procrastinating there with friends (I am great at picking out jukebox songs, but horrible at darts). Two, it served as the spot for one of my most successful dates (although if you saw the place you'd never know why..."romantic" is not a word I would use to describe it!). And three, the many years of visiting the Mag on Christmas night with my sister and company is hands down my favorite family tradition. Drunken hilarity always ensues, and even when I'm feeling the need for deep reflection, the graffiti-filled bathroom walls serve as a mecca for meaningful phrases and soulful words of wisdom. The bartenders even double as doctors--I once complained of heartburn at the bar after consecutive nights of holiday drinking, and the bartender was kind enough to mix me a vanilla vodka and sprite on the house, which cured it right up! You never know what will happen during (or after) a visit to the Mag Bar, but that's all part of the fun.

Definitely a great place to go on Wednesday night. You can't beat the drink prices. Wednesday night is nicknamed "sexual ambiguous" night. Come out and see why. The only downside is that it's a smaller place and tends to have lines for the bathrooms.

It is the best dive in Old Louisivlle. No food, just booze.

I was alone in Louisville for one night (a Wednesday) and the reviews below convinced me that this was the place to go. Mag was full of locals, mostly young people of varying sexualities and levels of hip. The bartenders were friendly and quick, there were at least 6 people behind the bar at all times, an absurd amount for this Brooklyner who rarely sees 2 tending. At first no one talked to me, most were absorbed within their own groups, or they were not sure what to do with the sorta outta place girl who came in by herself and quickly ordered a beer and a shot followed by a beer and a shot, or they were too busy dancing on top of the bar to giveafuck about anything going on around them. I did make a few friends after awhile and stayed till closing for no real reason except that I was fully entertained watching the dance floor, playing a private game of "tranny or not?", and filling up on cheap beer while I could. Probably not most's idea of a great night in Kentucky, but it worked for me.

My girlfriend and I loved this place when we visited this summer. A great blue collar dive bar with an eclectic crowd. We spent most of the night out in the courtyard, but it the pool tables seemed to be a big draw. The people there were very friendly and happy to talk to "outsiders." A great place to relax after a long day of doing the tourist thing.

    Great music. Cheap beer.

This is a place where dreams go to die. The staff there sucks, and they are only nice to their friends. It is very clicky, it reminds me of high school except all the mean people who work there were probably the ones getting picked on in school, and that's why they are so grumpy.

I used to frequent this place quit a bit over the past 15 years, but it is no longer the same place. I have been to my share of dive bars. I love dive bars. I go out of my way to find places like this. It is my natural habitat. That is why I don't understand the draw of this place now. Be prepared, the entire staff is way cooler than you. If they are not ignoring you at the bar, they are hating on making you a drink. It seems the ladies have a little better luck at the bar. Maybe I should start showing my man boobs. They have a great jukebox, but you will never hear your song. Either the hipsters pump $50 dollars worth of music at a time or it is just controlled by the bartender. The last time I was there is smelled horrible, the bathroom looked like the one in the movie Trainspotting, the pool tables were beat up, and there was not a straight pool stick in the house. If you are into the new hipster movement, you may like this place. I prefer to give my money to a place with good people, a good waitstaff, and a good bartender. If you want a great dive bar experience, give Third Street Dive or Spring Street Bar & Grill a try.

I didn't need that last bourbon and soda, but not getting really drunk at my old neighborhood bar on a brief trip to Lou seemed out of the question. Oh, Mag Bar, I miss the days when you were only a staggering walk home. I miss your amazing punk jukebox that reminds me of the safety pin days of my youth. I miss your strong pours, your atrocious bathrooms, your cranky pool tables. If dives make you uncomfortable, if you can't stand punk or metal, if you need a fancy cocktail, skip the Mag Bar. Leave it for the lovers like me!

it's a great dive! This maybe a second review, not sure... ihearttheheavypours!... Wednesday evenings late are the best for dirty ole men... if you like to drink and don't mind walking through a closet to pee, this is the place for you

Great bar, cheap drinks and a most awesome jukebox!

  • Peyton R.

Place: cool, authentic, old-school Louisville dive bar. Staff: attitude-infused a**hole-laden. Honestly, tattooed wanna-be rock star, bar dude -- get the hell over yourself.

    (2)
  • Kelley S.

I love this place right here! I've been a regular for years and living in OL, have proudly made it my local. Heavy pours, truly epic jukebox, and a rich cross section of real folk who enjoy a strong drink and a great song. Paired with a angus burger from Scheler's it is the perfect dive. I've seen a review or two with statements about the wait staff being 'too cool' and in attentive. Screw dat, yo!! If you want your drink, yank their collar.

Where to go to get hammered in Louisville. Eat first. That Grill is in name only.

    (5)
  • Amelia P.

There is no food here and you wouldn't want to eat it if there was.Though they do order in Pizza for the patrons on Thursdays. Gross bathrooms and cheap drink specials. Louisville's premier "dive". When I bring touring musician friends in on a week night where there's dollar beers or else $2 well drinks they are very amused and very happy to be able to get drunk on one $20 bill, usually with change left!

    (5)
  • Emily B.

Funny, I never even noticed grill was part of the name...it certainly is not. But I have been lucky enough to be there on a Thursday night to snag some pizza. Less lucky when I've had to use the bathroom, which is seriously a public health hazard. I don't understand why we have kitchen inspectors, but no bathroom inspectors. Anyway, it obviously doesn't keep me from going. I like it for pool in the back room and the good selection of music on the juke box.

    (4)
  • Carlo K.

Beer was good, but I was there for a few bands which was a pretty great experience.

    (4)
  • Gwen P.

Pass. This is the place for grubby guys and wannabe bands.

    (1)
  • Kristie T.

Good location for local music, but the bartender was a real jerk wad. The woman's room was much improved since the last time I had been there. I'd go back to see music, but not just to simply drink at the bar.

Mag Bar has the best jukebox in Louisville, says my 20-something nephew. And, while I love a great jukebox, I cannot rightfully weigh in on that one. For all I know that jukebox might be the atomic core that encapsulates the inchoate "ethos" of a Louisville (music and more) scene that is churning at all times. And, if the Mag Bar is that very template of a "jukebox bar," it is only so when one of Louisville's more notable underground bands (Straight As, for example) isn't playing in the back room (there's usually a $5 cover for the back on live music nights). Mag Bar also has that pub feel, which makes it a great place to take your friends and just talk. For some reason that strikes me as unusual and worthwhile when an establishment is a great place to have a chat. I have loved Mag Bar's sign for many years, and have seen the place rise and fall and rise again, in popularity, over time, but it remains a classic and offbeat way to spend an evening. Long live The Mag Bar.

  • Alex W.

This place is pretty cool. Very dingy. The beers aren't too expensive. There's pool tables in the back. I really like all the arcade video games in the back room. They play cool music. Sometimes they have tv shows playing on a projected and that's pretty awesome. Sometimes cool bands play. If you dig pretentious black metal you'll really like it. If you think the bartender is a dick to you chances are you do suck.

  • Court M.

I love this place. You can talk to everyone about a plethora of topics! The staff is great and super friendly! Nice prices and a sweet little game room and outdoor area!

    (5)
  • Amanda W.

First timer here. Small place, but entertaining. Everyone in the bar was nice, great crowd.

    (3)
  • Mark M.

I live a couple of blocks from this bar. Divey, dirty, cheap drinks. Plenty of great people watching opportunities. Over the last few years the mag has incorporated trivia, get down wednesdays (EDM Dance night) etc. If you like 4th street live this probably isn't the place for you.

    (5)
  • Kristin P.

It's a dive bar with good beer and cheap liquor. If you're ordering liquor, you'll think this place is a steal. If you're ordering beer, you'll read Yelp and wonder what the hell constitutes a "cheap drink." Well, whatever. If you spend $5 on a Bud Light or High Life and it's NOT a pitcher, I wonder where you learned to drink. Otherwise, $5 for a Founders or West Sixth isn't terrible but it's not chump change. The jukebox IS great, the bar does smell funny but not terrible, there's no table service and usually only one bartender. But the patrons are chill, the bathrooms aren't that bad (they lock!), and the pizza next door is bomb. No frills, some thrills. Mag Bar.

    (4)
  • Gerri R.

This was my first time at the mag bar and i can say for sure i will be back. The place is old and kinda ran down and has one of the worst bathrooms i have ever been in in my entire life. Dear God hover! BUT the bartenders were very friendly and offered quick service, even as the place began to fill up. Drinks were reasonably priced and made nice and strong. We went for a show in the back room that normally houses pool tables and arcade games , the acoustics were great! Theres not much to the mag bar but thats how i like my dives.

  • Kathy V.

Decently priced drinks. Dive bar atmosphere. Last night was the first time I went there when it wasn't their random Goth night. Which is cool to have....but if you wander in on that night and are not goth-ed out....you're gonna get some looks. Those times were...uncomfortable. But last night was chill and fun. They had a DJ for the post-SpringFest celebration. They have some booths for seating and a long bar.

Went to 'the Mag' for a drink this week & loved it! Really friendly staff, real community feel, quirky interior (i.e. J Edgar Hoover photo with fishnet legs - love it!), good beer selection (according to my husband - I'm not a beer drinker). Just needs a little wine selection for us non-beer/spirits drinkers to make the Mag 5 star (had box red wine - not terrible but could be much better).

  • Erin B.

To preface, I am an avid Mag Bar customer and generally frequent the bar Wednesday nights after 12am (the night with the EDM DJs and flashy lights). Also, I created a Yelp account solely to review this place. If you've never seen someone on drugs at this bar, you are incredibly naive. Never change. The bathroom walls are laced with cocaine. Definitely don't try the snozzberries. They don't taste like snozzberries. The drinks are incredibly inexpensive, hence the 5 star rating. And to clarify, there is a coat check, but it's a self serve type of situation located on top of the cancertron. Definitely bring your machine washable jacket though, because I'm assuming if you're in the Mag you aren't about to make it out to the Old Louisville Laundry and Dry Cleaners the next morning.

  • Ian M.

Great place to kick a few back. The Bloody Mary was good. The Juke Box seemed to always play a song I liked. From Operation Ivy to GG Allin to the Stooges the hits just kept rocking. Service was good and there were a lot of people since it wad a rainy day during the St. James art Fest.

Mag Bar has definitely become the place for all hipsters to go every Wednesday night. But I cannot be a hypocrite because every now and then I show up there on a Wednesday night due to the fact that I know the bartenders working and get free drinks. The environment is completely laid back, the juke box has a great selection, there are 3 pool tables, and it is a pretty spacious place. One very notable detail is that you can still smoke inside even after the smoking ban! This is very convenient in the winter. Quite a friendly dive bar; they even bust out a popcorn machine for everyone to enjoy free, delicious popcorn.

Look in the dictionary or encyclopedia for "Dive Bar" and you will find the Mag Bar listed. When I lived in Old Louisville, it was quite frequent to find me there more often than at home. You will find the same people there day in and day out...yes, plenty of regulars. You can typically tell the outsiders by the way the ask for a menu. A what?!!? How many years has been since they last served food? Expect to mocked and ridiculed for asking for a menu. If you are seeking to down several drinks and not break the bank, this would be a good place to go. Their bourbon and water is consists of a "splash of water" and never watered down. There is always some great playing on the JukeBox. Don't even think about playing some pop crap on there. If you are lucky, you might be able to squeeze in between others to play some pool. I would hate to think how much money I spent on the pinball machines over the years. If you are picky about clean restrooms...HA HA HA HA..... PS: To all of the home owners on 2nd Street, I am really sorry for all the times I peed in your bushes or slept on your porch because I was too drunk to make it home.

I can't believe how high the ratings are for this place. I'm not sure why they call this place a grille, because they certainly don't serve food of any kind. If they did, I definitely would avoid eating it. It's a dive in the worst of ways. Poorly lit with sagging seats (if you like springs in your butt) and a cockroach problem, the Mag looks more like a condemned property than a bar. The bartenders are frequently rude, the patrons are frequently on coke, and the drinks, while relatively cheap, are not the cheapest in town (if they were, I think I could tolerate the atmosphere more readily). The crowd there is rowdy and while I've only been there a handful of times, I've seen the cops called at least three of them. Parking is also a nightmare. Try Cahoots for a good dive bar. It's also a dive, but it's less crowded, the drinks are cheaper, it's better lit, and it has fabulous food.

Truly a fantastic dive bar! Initially some may not want to hang out here.. but if you do, it's a treasure. You'll find good people (interesting people really), great beers and the best jukebox I've heard in a long time. Fantastic Derby experience... brings you down to earth after the hoopla of 4th street... which is fun but not low key.

  • Cynthia D.

This is a dive bar. The real deal. Not a theme bar trying to be a dive bar. You can expect just what the name implies. Cheap drinks, Earthy aromas. In recent years a backyard has been added. On the downside, the low budget atmosphere here is real, and is easily reflected in the care and design of the bathrooms. This venue has gone through changes in the past, including the addition of live music. Previously known for it's amazing juke box, the live music seems like a natural addition. A note to those headed here: Cash only. No table service.

  • Matt B.

I feel very fortunate to live around the corner from the mag. Take it from me, you don't have to know the bartenders and get free drinks, or be a hipster to enjoy the hell out of life while you're there. The jukebox there can only be described as legendary.

    (5)
  • Brad N.

Great place to get a few drinks, shoot some pool and hang out in a pretty laid-back atmosphere. Just make sure to bring cash

Just spent two nights here after an absence of 2+ years. Damned if the Lord ain't washed my sins clean.

I had a couple glasses of bourbon and enjoyed live music at Magnolia Bar and Grill while passing through Louisville last night. The "mag bar" as locals call it, seems well known in Louisville for its live music and hipster atmosphere. A crowd of people lingered outside. I must admit, I felt unsafe while walking down the street to the bar. There were cops everywhere, likely for good reason. A pickup truck was stopped in the middle of a street yelling obscenities at an apartment complex... It's definitely not a classy bar (West Side) in a romantic part of town if that's what you're looking for. Nevertheless, the keep was attentive, the bourbon was a couple dollars cheaper than I'm used to, and the folk band put on a good show. No complaints.

  • Adam K.

Very polarizing place. I lived right around the corner for a year. I gave this place three shots. To be clear; I am a shorts and t-shirt guy. I waited 15 minutes to be served and I swear the place was nearly empty. The bartenders were too busy not doing anything to serve me. Try 2: gothic night! Horrible. I walked out after hearing death baby rage scream music. Try 3: same as try 1. Some people really love it though so give it a shot. Not my scene at all though.

I've walked in in a tuxedo, and PJs, and no one has said a word. The people there are open minded, the conversations eclectic, and the drinks are made to your specs, if you ask. Hell, they will even put a pot of coffee on if you ask nice. I've even brought my mother in there a few times. And my daughter. Absolutely the worst bathrooms in Louisville. So don't go there if you want to use them.

    (4)
  • Patrick S.

My fiance and I love the mag bar. We particularly like coming out on DJ nights and getting our dance on. Wednesday nights are our favorite for this reason. It's a dive bar atmosphere but very comfortable and laid back place to drink and have fun. I only wish they accepted credit cards!

    (5)
  • Brett A.

It is one of the closest bars to my apartment and probably the worst bar in all of Louisville. It smelled like urine and they charged me $5 for a single domestic beer. the atmosphere was bad, and the bartenders were rude. I will not go back.

    (1)
  • Nick G.

If i went to this joint, i went because someone i knew was there. Most, not all of the 'tenders are rude, more than once i handed over cash and didn't get my change back, and got the impression that i was being done a favor by even being served. It would probably not hurt this place to hire actual Bartenders to work the bar. "Cool guy/gal who people know" simply can't stack next to someone who knows the job. The Jukebox is not bad, but not as good as people make out. Finally, I've been to more dive bars than most people can count, to be a dive bar you DON'T need to keep the place smelling like half the town wiped their ass with it.

    (2)
  • Chad H.

Most authentic place in all of Louisville, Cash only dive bar. Stiff cheap drinks everyday, Trivia on Tuesday, awesome dance party on Wednesday, and bingo on Sunday. Not a place for douche canoes.

    (4)
  • merisa t.

NYC is full of dive bars, but very few can match the effortless dirty charm of Louisville's Mag Bar. It's dark, it's dingy, and the pool tables are shoddy, but the flourscent lights are welcoming and the cheap, strong drinks are calling you home (or, as it were, far, far away from home). I know my mother warned me not to, but I love you Mag Bar.

    (4)
  • Tomas F.

It is "just a bar", but a local favorite. pool table in back room. very dark inside. friendly service. believe me there is nothing special.

    (3)
  • Rachel F.

Now this is a Dive Bar! Very chill and unassuming bar with an eclectic crowd, drink options, and decor. Love it for some good old fashioned day drinking. That being said, it is also a dive bar bathroom. One stall. Always a line. It's dingy. But hell, I can go in there sober without being disturbed, and there was even sufficient tp, so I'm going with a win here. Tip: Bloody Marys here rock. Also, the Un Fair the same weekend as the famous St James Art Fair is here. Fantastic stuff, much cheaper.

    (4)
  • Amanda F.

My only complaint is the "cash only" concept. I'm a debit card girl so I tend to pass over Mag Bar for something a little more accommodating. That being said, they have an awesome jukebox in whose selection I tend to get lost. The pool area is so cool and the outdoor seating is great. The bartenders and patrons alike are always friendly and talkative. What I like most about dive bars is the eclectic and carefree environment. You can be whoever you want to be in Mag Bar as long as you aren't rude. If you are in the area, stop in. They will be glad you did.
