El Tarasco is a competent Mexican restaurant in a city that's way behind the curve on authentic Mexican cuisine. The "taqueria" style that is so prevalent elsewhere has only a few entries in town, more than half of them named Qdoba. This is unfortunate as taqueria-style can stand some challenge and variety and defines a choice between whole and refried beans. There is no choice about this at El Tarasco, if you ask they will look at you with puzzlement. So rather than ask why in the world they don't offer whole beans, I avoid ordering any platters with the dreaded refrieds. My simple solution, and Tarasco's saving grace, is the Enchiladas Acapulco (shrimp, light cheese sauce, in corn tortillas). El Tarasco gets that extra star out of me after all due to this single dish.

El Tarasco is a clean, tasty, middle-of-the-road Mexican restaurant! Have a big group coming in for lunch? You've found your place. I'd recommend notifying staff of any time restrictions you have, as service can be rather slow. Refried beans, rice, tacos, chips & salsa. You can't go wrong with average Mexican cuisine. The bathrooms are clean, too! Don't worry, you won't need 'em-- they're not *That* kind if Mexican restaurant. As I said, perfect for lunch hour. ;)

A decent Mexican restaurant. Server was fantastic; atmosphere was okay; and, food was okay. Compared to other authentic Mexican restaurants, even in Louisville, it tasted a bit more bland. It was a good fix that was not too far from home.

Great generic Mexican food. The service is always great and the food is exactly what you would expect. Shrimp fajitas are a great choice!

Solid "nothing-special" Mexican fare with good happy hour deals throughout the week. Would I make a special trip from elsewhere in Louisville to St. Matthews to visit El Tarasco? No. But since it's in the neighborhood, and I can walk home after a few margaritas or cervezas, it's a decent option when I want to gorge myself on chips and salsa, rice, beans, and some kind of meat. The portion sizes are definitely a good deal for the inexpensive prices.

Went here on a Monday night for dinner after a disappointing Mexican meal at another place the previous night. The food was very good and affordable - we ordered the carnitas, and a beef enchilada (beef tips) and ground beef taco combo. They served 2 types of salsa with the chips, both of which were excellent! The service was top-notch. Oddly enough, we didn't drink margaritas that night but we might just go back and sample their cocktails on May 5th along with some yummy Mexican food.

My latest favorite Mexican. Get the seafood soup. Nice servers. Great salsa & they keep it coming - this is very important for a Mexican restaurant! They have great drink specials as well. I love the combo plates & food is yummy. Can't wait to go back!

El Tarasco has good, cheap Mexican food and great margarita specials. The quality of food can be hit or miss but overall I'm satisfied when I eat here. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to go here but when I'm in the St. Matthews area, it's an inexpensive way to get your Mexican fix. The servers are all really friendly as well.

I used to eat lunch at this place a lot, and always found it a serviceable and cheap, if completely generic Mexican place. Last night I had dinner there, and was left very unimpressed. My girlfriend's steak was like beef jerky, the margaritas were sickeningly sweet and rather small, and my tacos al pastor were decent but nothing special at all. Service was amateur and unfriendly. The waiter initially said we could "absolutely" use our measly $5 coupon, then bizarrely returned near the end of our meal and told us the manager said it was not valid. When we paid for our meal at the counter, we presented it to the "manager" anyways, and he said we could use it, no problem. Methinks the waiter was trying to get an extra fiver out of us, which is no big deal but merely petty and unprofessional. The place had zero atmosphere and was totally dead at 8:30 on a Friday night. I realize this is a generic, Americanized Mexican joint, but even in that watered down field, El Tarasco falls well below the competition.

With the glut of Mexican Restaurants in Louisville, it hard to say which one is best. But El Tarasco never fails to deliver a good meal. The staff is prompt and friendly, and the decor is festive.

I'm giving El Tarasco three stars under the context of it being decent Mexican food considering I was in Louisville. If i ate this food in NYC, L.A. or Chicago - I'd definitely give it a 2 star because i expect more from these cities. Now, with this background in mind, the food was okay (not terrible and not great), it's inexpensive and the service is GREAT! if you find yourself in the area and need a fix of Mexican food, this is a good place to eat at.

Yum! El Tarasco is a good restaurant for a quick dinner. Very very inexpensive, and great for groups. Not the best restaurant in Louisville, but pretty good.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
