Could sum it up with a statement like, "Eh". Service was solid, not spectacular but certainly had no complaints and they weren't quite busy but they were steady. The food is acceptable. Nothing I had was bad but nothing was particularly great either. I'm a major enchilada fiend and that is kind of my measuring stick for all mexican restaurants. The enchiladas were pretty bland. Again, they weren't BAD they just weren't worth writing home about. On the plus side, the portions are HUGE and the Margarita specials are pretty solid. Overall, El Nopal is worth a visit if you're looking for a heaping plate of semi-authentic Mexican food. But, there are a few better options around.

In Mexico, it's pretty common practice to eat el nopales as a side dish. In Louisville, it's pretty common to see an El Nopal about town. As veggies go, el nopales are simply OK. As Mexican restaurants go, El Nopal is barely that. On a weekday evening celebrating a birthday, this location seemed open enough to cover a group of 10 with ease. It wasn't. Slow and inconsistent, it took far too much time between sit down and opportunity to order and then receipt of food to be considered efficient. And the food? Blah. Uninspiring Americanized Mexican-flavored fare that I'm always amazed has inspired 28 of these spots in 'Kentuckiana'. I'm sure others are better than this one. But based on location, there's got to be better Mexican food in Okolona.

Yeah, El Nopal is pretty bad. I had been here a few times with co-workers and I would've given it a 3. My last visit here was so bad, I will easily take it down another star. - Service was incredibly slow. This was at lunch time and the restaurant was barely half full. Reflecting back on previous visits, service was always slow. More often than not, I had to go up to register to get my ticket. - My chicken enchilada had bone in it. It was a pretty big bone too, not some little tiny bone chip. Gross and dangerous. - My chile relleno was disgustingly greasy. And somehow burned. - Beans are flavorless. - Salsa somehow tastes like dishsoap. I've seen El Nopals all over Louisville. I'm not sure if they're all this bad. I'm going to avoid this one as much as possible.

Typical Mexican restaurant. Rice and refried beans are the side dishes. Is that all they eat south of the border? Sad really to think that.

I was disappointed to say the least. Perhaps the blandest Mexican food I have ever had........ Really not much more to say about this chain.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
