I don't like giving bad reviews, I really don't. You can check my other reviews, they tend to be glowing praises of establishments. So let's say I'm pretty lukewarm on Cafe on Main Street. Let's start with the best parts of my visit: the service was pretty great. My group was greeted very warmly and promptly given a table during a busy lunch rush and the waiter was friendly, thorough, and pretty quick on the draw with drink refills. No complaints on the service or staff. The wait time for food was a good bit longer than I expected for a sandwich (approx 40 mins.). I wasn't terribly put off by this since it was a busy lunch rush. But then this brings me to the food... The food wasn't bad. It was pretty ok, for sandwiches and salads, but compared to whatever I could get prepackaged at a grocery store or at any other place with similar menu, the quality of the food stands barely above fast food yet the price on the menu stands higher than it merits. Seems this place knows people are accustomed to overpaying at trendy restaurants elsewhere in this city and wants to cash in on it? They'll have to try harder. I won't even go into detail on the decor or ambience. I won't be going back.

I absolutely love this place! I ordered the farmers market quiche and it was delicious! I will most definitely come back here and recommend this place to family and friends!

Wow, the hot brown here was so good, I'm still thinking about it a month later. Coming in from out of town, I kept hearing about this hot brown. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to get to the Brown Hotel. But fortunately, we randomly came upon this restaurant in our search and made our way over for a last lunch before heading home. Good thing we found this place. The building itself is so unassuming that the people I talked to who lived in the area, had no idea that it existed. It's essentially an old home refitted to accommodate a restaurant. It's like eating at grandma's, including the eclectic mix of paintings, wallpaper, and furniture. The only thing that the four of us ate was the hot brown. Supposedly, everything including the bread is homemade. And you could taste it. By the time the meal was over, there was not a single piece of food left on those plates. Licked clean. If I were to visit Louisville again, this will be my first stop.

This is the closest you can get to a full breakfast in grandma's kitchen. EVERYTHING is from scratch, and done right. Done the way it has been done for decades, with the casual, high quality of authentic southern cooking. The establishment feels like a converted farmhouse with dining rooms distributed throughout, and appointed with country-style family kitchen tables. The atmosphere is comfortable and familiar, and the patrons all know each other and their servers by name. The food is as warm and authentic as the staff of older county-dwelling women. I had the hot brown special, which was honestly one of the very best I've ever had. Every plate delivered to the tables around me was just as attractive as mine, and left me wondering when I could make it back to find out how good the rest of the menu is. I can recommend this restaurant as your best bet for a country Saturday brunch. They are closed on Sunday, and only open for lunch on most weekdays. But if you're in the neighborhood and craving an authentic southern brunch in an unassuming atmosphere, try Cafe on Main Street.

I have never had a hot brown before so this was my inaugural occasion. It was magnificent. Pieces of ham and turkey with a mornay sauce and home-made bread. Two pieces of crisp bacon are laid over the top. Then came the bread pudding in a bourbon sauce. Wow. I wish we could have stayed on and had breakfast the next day. The restaurant is in a nice little house that screams, "Kentucky!!" It is tastefully decorated, cozy, and very pleasant. The ladies who run it are extremely nice. Service is friendly and professional. Take note that ,since hot browns are made to order, they take about 20 min. Sit a spell. Prepare to savor. This place is an easy trip off if I-64. Set your GPS and fire up your appetite!

This place has great food with friendly service but very slow. Plan on taking 1-2 hours for a visit. I hope it survives.

The food and ambiance is so cozy. Feels like you are at grandmas house as the restaurant is an old restored Victorian home. Hard would floors, antique tables, and just a quaint place. Just as all the reviews said the food and deserts are fantastic. I had strawberry cream cake and my husband had just plain chocolate cake. Both were Devine!!! Very fresh and homemade for sure. They do have some private space upstairs for groups, and you should get a reservation unless you arrive the moment they open! Definitely worth your visit!!!!

Awesome! The food was soooo good and fresh! My husband loved the spinach and bacon quiche and I loved the fresh eggs and biscuits! They have Hot Browns for lunch, I love them so we may come back later today!

Small place with a friendly feel. One lady makes your whole meal and it tastes great. Breakfast is particularly good here. And the desserts. Be sure to get the Hot Brown! A Louisville tradition since 1926!

This is a hidden gem in the middle of J-town. My husband and I tried it a couple of weeks ago and I loved it so much, I came back and brought my daughter for lunch a week later. It is in a restored home that gives it a quaint Southern charm. The servers are friendly and eager to make recommendations if you have never been there. I had the chicken salad both times, once on a salad and the next time on a croissant. It is delicious. Pretty much everything they serve is made from scratch, so it is hard to pass up the homemade desserts even if you are getting full from your lunch. (I've had the chocolate cake and strawberry cream cake). They are big enough to share and worth the splurge. Don't expect to get in and out of here in a hurry. Apparently the owner is also the cook and the food comes out as quickly as she can serve it up. But I promise, good things come to those who wait.

Visiting from out of town, my daughter suggested trying it, she'd never been but heard breakfast was good. We had lunch & everything was delicious. Daughter had half of Hot Brown & while she could have eaten more, we also shared the Bread Pudding with Bourbon Sauce, she was completely satisfied & couldn't think of anything else she would have wanted. The dessert was something I would definitely get again & I don't even like bourbon. I had the half salad/half sandwich, it was wonderful. I chose the Cafe Bleu salad, which had mandarin oranges, strawberries, pecans & Bleu Cheese crumbles on mixed greens. I ordered the Raspberry Vinaigrette dressing which was the best I've ever had. The half sandwich was the Cranberry-Pecan Chicken Salad on Homemade Sourdough bread. Again, definitely worth having again. The bread was the best sourdough I've had, light & fluffy, not dense like some. Even the pickle chips were very good. The restaurant is open Tuesday-Saturday 11-3, closed on Mondays & serves breakfast 9-3 on Saturdays. Since they are also closed Christmas Eve & Day the only problem will be figuring out how to get back there before I leave town!

Food is very fresh. The homemade bread makes the sand which. Yum yum yum! Small place and limited seating so be patient and allow enough time.

Well let's just say yesterday would have been my second visit at this cafe - Myself and 2 friends went in to have breakfast after going to the farmer's market. We waited about 5 minutes just to be greeted by the not friendly owner. We asked if we could sit on the porch to eat. Her response "Well you could if I had staff that could serve out there". Then she proceeded to ask us if we had reservations -really reservations for a breakfast place? When she basically turned us away, I looked at my friends and said, I really wouldn't eat here anyway!!! As we walked out - the owner, proceeded to follow us out into the parking lot and ask me what I said.... My words exactly: "What I said was I wouldn't eat here if it was the last place on earth!!!! You're rude and disrespectful to your customers." She said, really, I'm rude - well I can't help it if I don't have enough staff!!" Um...last I checked that's not your customer's problems and she continued to question me - I told her she was being rude and obnoxious and to have a great day!!!! Let's just say, I WILL NEVER BE GOING BACK TO THIS ESTABLISHMENT AGAIN!!!!!! GOOD LUCK STAYING IN BUSINESS!!!!

As I write this review, I'm so torn. I want to give this place 4 stars, I reeeeeally do. But I just can't. The food is delicious, it truly is. They make their sandwich bread homemade, similar to a brioche. It's fresh, buttery, and delicious. The club sandwich is a solid choice; ham, turkey, bacon, cheese, lettuce and tomato served with your choice of a side (cole slaw, German potato salad, kettle chips, fruit). The hot ham and cheese is equally as good, however the portion of ham is small. The hot brown is fantastic, but takes a very long time to get. The Benedictine and bacon sandwich is yummy and also a good choice. The tomato soup isn't the greatest, but it's tasty. Prices are a little on the high side for a lunch place, but not unreasonable. My criticism with this restaurant is this: EVERY time I have been here, the owner complains and makes comments, to the costumers, about the lack of staff. They have changed their store hours, due to lack of staff (per the owner). Today, I watched the owner tell multiple groups of customers that she only has one server, so it would take a long time to get food. As they were leaving, she followed them to the door and said, "if you know anybody who needs a job, send them here." While I appreciate her honesty, this is not the customers problem! Who turns away groups of people at a restaurant that ONLY serves lunch!? And who follows customers out the door asking them to send people looking jobs to the business? The service is always very friendly, however wait time for food is extremely inconsistent. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes to get your meal, other times it takes 45 minutes. I want to buy this place and turn it into the J-town "place to go" for lunch that it has the potential to be. Good food, large parking lot, cute building that is the ideal lunch spot.
