I have been to both Bootleg BBQ locations and this is the one you should go to (see my review of Preston before you go). First of all this restaurant is Kentucky Proud! It was the original Fern Creek BBQ spot and is my go to whenever I am craving BBQ. The baby back ribs are smoked so well, they need no sauce! You can taste the smoke in every bite! They also sell smoked Brats, smoked chicken wings (which my cousin comes all the way from the east Jefferson County border the get for family events) and the meat gambit. Now onto the sides... I have never had a side from this restaurant that I did not like! My favorite sides are the baked beans, potato salad and mashed potatoes. There are times when I will just call in an order of mashed potatoes with no gravy because I want comfort food and they are mashed potatoes definitely fit the bill. The mashed potatoes are homemade, they are very fluffy. I can taste butter and milk, they are perfectly seasoned - not overly salty but also not bland, they are so creamy and but wonderful! Lastly to their desserts - two words: Bread Pudding. It comes with a bourbon glaze. Need I say more?

Good Owensboro-style BBQ. No pretense. Just good eatin'. Mutton was even better the next day.

Best Turkey we've had in awhile including the honey baked ham one we had a couple years ago. Haven't found much we don't like from this place. Just great food all the way around.

At one time this place was rated as high as Jack Fry's. This is the best BBQ in town!. The place is a true hole in the wall but the BBQ is mouth watering. Try the cactus salad if you dare and your mouth will thank you.

The family was all set to hit the Bardstown BBQ festival on Sunday, June 9th. Unfortunately, I discovered that the festival ran on Friday and Saturday only, so we headed to Dinosaur World instead. But we had our minds, hearts, and mouths set on BBQ, so we stopped at Bootleg (hat tip to Yelp! for helping me find a place that was open at 7pm on Sunday!) on the way home. This place is small, but the outdoor seating is covered from the sun and has good airflow. I think most of their business is catering (we saw 4 or 5 catering trucks) and carry out (there was a pretty constant stream of people getting bags to go when we were eating). We ordered at the counter and waited for them to call our names. They were very friendly and super fast. My only hit on them here is that they were out of a few things ... we got the last babyback slab, and the guy before us got the last regular rib half slab. Major props for me being able to feed 3 adults, a 16 year old, and two younger kids for $60! The food was better than I'd expect for that price, but not the best BBQ I've had. We were all satisfied with it, but nobody raved about anything except the butter cream pie (if you like chess pie, you'll like this). The rolls were knock off hawaiian rolls straight from the grocery store ... we had 6 of them, and they gave them to us in the bag they came in! :) This isn't a place I'd go out of my way to go to again, but I think if we were driving by around mealtime, I'd probably stop there to grab a bite. The food was just slightly better than average bbq, but the low prices make it a good value. TIP: Ask for the type of sauce you want (they have several) when you're ordering. They didn't ask us, and just gave us something that was pretty blasé.

I had this food at Heaven Hill Bourbon Distillery; it had been catered in. Even though it had ridden in in a minivan, the bbq and sides were all out of this world. I don't say that lightly. Our buffet included ribs, pulled pork, shredded chicken, twice-baked potato casserole, pit baked beans, cole slaw, bread, and 2 cobblers. Everything was just fantastic! They served 3 kinds of BBQ sauce alongside their ribs so you could choose to your liking. The ribs were just perfect. Really, honestly, this is the BEST BBQ I have had...I think ever. Piggy perfection! Pulled pork was incredibly flavorful but not greasy or laden with chunks of fat (I find that so gross). Shredded chicken was breast meat: moist and full of good flavor from the light sauce it was tossed in. Twice baked casserole has sour cream and chives mixed into the potatoes, with 2 kinds of cheese and bacon bits sprinkled on top. I got a second portion of this. The beans were smoky, not too sweet, and had great depth of flavor. The caterer said they had spent 4-6 hours in the pit with the meat. mmmmm The ribs were the best part. I quit drinking bourbon so that the bourbon wouldn't interfere with the flavor of the meat! There was a nice thick line of pink all the way around the ribs from the smoking process. The ribs didn't even need any sauce because they were so full of flavor from the wood and so tender from spending so many hours being cooked. Ribs dream of attaining the looks of the one in the photo I posted. I didn't eat any cobbler or cole slaw because I had to have a second rib and potato helping...but those who did raved about the dessert and slaw too! I cannot speak to the appearance of the restaurant but honestly...with food this good I could stand barefoot in a truck stop bathroom and still be just tickled.

I need more than five stars to appropriately describe my experiences..... Due to the many pleasant dining adventures at the Okolona Bootleg Bar-B-Q at 7508 Preston Highway (40219), I decided that I wanted to patronize a member of the Okolona Business and Professional Association for lunch on my birthday this year. Happily, I report that Mark and Carol Weatherholt, the owners of the Bootleg Bar-B-Q on Preston Highway, where working in their restaurant, when I came in for my special birthday lunch with two of my dearest friends in the world. My friends had asked me where I wanted to go, and, I like to support the mom-and-pop restaurants so my selection of Bootleg came to mind easily.... Our food was wonderful and the service was professional and warm. Think about it. I could have selected any restaurant in the city for my birthday lunch. Thank you to Mark and Carol for making our dining experience wonderful and for a very memorable birthday. It is apparent that God is blessing your restaurant and I am honored to be a regular customer. Thank you for also being a member of the Okolona Business and Professional Association. An Extremely Satisfied Customer... Amy Lou Streible

I drove down for the Kentucky Derby with a few of my friends and we searched endlessly for a good barbeque place. Ended up here and was very delighted! Tasted great and the staff was warm and welcoming.

My wedding was catered by bootleg bbq this weekend. The food was so, so good! Everyone raved about it. The server was right on time to set up, and everything went off without a hitch from the cocktail hour food to the buffet. I can not recommend them highly enough for catering parties.

Small joint. Only about 8 tables in the winter. They do have a porch so that would add about 10 more tables during warmer tines. Prices are good I had a 1/2 slab of ribs 2 sides for about 11 bucks. Food was good BBQ sauce was OK I had to ask for a black BBQ sauce it was better then the one they gave. Both were good. We went the sat before the super bowl and this is a true story a lady was taking orders non stop while we were eating for super Sunday. She said she had taken 2500 orders for wings just in the past hour. So my guess the wings are outstanding. Enyiy.

Let me start with my classic preface about BBQ.....it's a very personal thing. I was raised with Texas style and my default is sauce heavy, bold tempered by sweet! This place was good! The ribs, falling off the bone, the chopped smoked mutton, gamy and tender, the sweet tea...spot on! Where they fall flat are on the sides. Nothing at all stuck out. Mack and cheese, beans, mash and gravy, all were just ok. It's off the beaten path, and with the nicest people working behind the counter, I'll definitely swing back through for some tasty smoked ribs!

I don't like to be negative, but I am from West Tennessee and we know a thing or two about bar-b-q. I have been to this place a couple of times, hoping that the second experience would be better than the first. Maybe it's my fault for ordering turkey sandwich. The turkey to bun ratio was way off. There was just enough turkey to cover the bottom of the bun, but no piling allowed it seems. Maybe that was a good thing as the turkey tasted old. The sides were the saving grace as the loaded mashed potatoes were very good, with cheese, bacon, how could you not like it. Also, the spicy cactus salad was very good. I am going to give this one more try, but definitely not getting the turkey.

Stumbled across this place ( the little hole in the wall one south of Louie) by accident a few years back and have always stopped by ever since when I'm in the area. They do a great job on there ribs, but what keeps me coming back is their slaw! I always order a few quarts to go if I am heading back home (Chicago Suburbs). As for the ribs, I always order spares of which they do a great job with.

Visiting Louisville from Nashville and wanted to try some burgoo. We came across this place and decided to give it a go. We ordered the burgoo and it was delicious. I'm a big fan. Also got a bbq pulled pork sandwich which I thought was great. Finished up with apple cobbler and I have to say that it was the best piece of pie I have ever had. Overall it was pretty great. The people working there were so nice, especially the chef. I would give them 10 stars for service. Definitely will go back if I end up in Louisville again.

The food is good. The potato salad is awesome, as are the green beans. My biggest complaint? They run out of stuff A LOT! I would venture to say of the 5 times I've ordered a ham salad sandwich (which yes - they're a BBQ joint, but trust me the ham salad is awesome) they've only had it available twice. Luckily, the "Big Nasty" is a great back-up plan. Unfortunately, they were out of those last time. They cater and it's awesome. Try the wings!

This is the kind of roadside BBQ place that used to be everywhere along rural highways throughout the South. I don't know how long this place has been around but it doesn't matter. It feels like that place my grandmother always insisted that we stop at when I was a kid. It may not please the 21st century BBQ snob looking for television competition style que but it is the kind of place that made slow cooked pork the staple that it has become. The pork is mixed in with the sauce in a classic sandwich style. It was delicious. A nice sloppy saucy bbq sandwich is every bit as classic as the old school diner hamburger. The baked beans and potato salad were perfect. Glad I pulled a couple of miles off of the interstate to give it a try while I was passing through.

Before I go any further, I need to state that Xzibit is to Pimp My Ride as Sean is to Bar B Q. Another simile to follow. Allow me to describe why I believe this little hole in the wall is worth eating at. Pulled Pork Sandwich: I shouldn't need to explain this, but Pulled Pork is a force to be reckoned with in every aspect of the loose meat sandwich. Spicy Cactus Salad: Gotta impress the girlfriend with my worldliness and shit. Admittedly, I had no idea what was in it before ordering, and still don't, yet it was critical that it be all up next to my pulled pork sammy. Spicy Cactus Salad is to happiness as Peyote is to tripping balls. Bam. You've been double similed. Tater Salad: Yes another salad but with taters. Slap my ass it was good as well. The lovely girlfriend inhaled the same with green beans and smashed potatoes (THE KEY TO MY HEART), she's the bomb. Zounds. Why does this estabilishment not exist in Michigan?

Rib joint #4 on our Louisville quest for rib excellence. Very rustic shack with all of 18 seats, 3 - 4 tops and 3 -2 tops, and some picnic tables outside. Ordered half rack and pulled pork sandwich. Cactus salad, rice, baked beans, and slaw sides. The ribs and pulled pork were delicious. The cactus salad, coleslaw, and baked beans were good. The rice and beans was more wet than I expected. Was definitely worth the drive off I-65!

This BBQ is some of the best around. My only problem with them is that they are located too far away from where I live. I would eat there once a week if they were closer. When we go we like to get the Pulled Pork Plate. All plates include 2 side orders (or a baked potato), and your choice of Bootleg's original made-from-scratch sauces. We usually get the beans and slaw for sides all for $7.99. They have lunch specials, something different on each day, for $4.99. We also will get the the bulk pack to take home. It's $8.99 a pound. Actually, anything they have on the menu is very good as we've tried almost everything they offer. If you are near don't pass them by.

This place is 30 minutes outside of downtown Louisville (read: country boonies). It is certainly not lavish and the bathroom is outside around the corner from the ice house lol. This isn't run by city slickers. Nope it's good old country bbq. And it's delicious. We had the ribs with dry rub and they were truly fantastic. The baked beans were delicious. Note the bread pudding looks literally nothing like the pictures. It's served cold and isn't very good.

Whenever I go to visit Loretto, Ky I for the most part stay in Louisville and make the drive down (it's usually just over an hour drive) via Bardstown Rd. It's scenic, and shows you what life in central Ky is about. A few years ago, my buddy and I were making the drive. We were probably higher than hell, I just remember seeing a bbq shack on the side of the road at the last minute and doing my best to not turn the car over. It must have been good, because I went back for last week. It was the same purpose- to get lunch before our trip to Loretto. It was my nephew, sister, and her friend. We were starving. It looked the same as I remembered- a wooden shack with a patio and gravel parking. You would think banjo music would start coming out of nowhere, but it surprisingly doesn't. It seems like they do a bulk of business in catering, as you see many items priced by the pound. Don't worry, they have individual items as well. I kept it simple- pork sandwich, mac, potato casserole, and some pie. This is the kind of cue that sits in its sauce, so don't plan on drenching your meats/sides. The actual food was ok, nothing stellar. However, that pie was something special. For the most part, everyone ate their food and no one got sick. It just didn't leave a lasting impression this time. The plus side the staff was friendly. Oh yea, didn't see any restrooms. Maybe I was blind or they were outside.
