This is a good burger place. With unlimited toppings that you can put on (side bar next to ordering section) and a juicy sizable burger, this is a good stop. They even have pretzel or gluten-free buns which was nice. It's kind of pricy though. I ordered a bluegrass burger with a pretzel bun and sweet potato fries and the bill with tip came out to $15, which is comparable to something I'd find in downtown Chicago, which this place is not. But the portion sizes are big enough that it's shareable. It's a small place but there's a good amount of seating inside and some outdoor seating as well. A fun stop overall on our way to the Red to climb.

Good burger joint. Cons: Average burger. A little pricey. Pros: Great sweet potato fries. Awesome condiment bar and sauces. High quality ingredients. You walk in and order at the counter. The menu is completely create-your-own, which is fun, though I like the option of some chef creations. You pick your meat (angus, bison, turkey, ahi, veggie, etc), your bun (upcharge for pretzel or gluten free), then your add-on's like cheese, bacon, sauteed onions, mushrooms, peppers, avocado, etc. The add-on's are all $0.79 each. The burgers come with fries, which you can sub. There's an upcharge for some sides such as sweet potato fries. As you can see, the cost of a burger can add up if you're not careful. Keep in mind, they use quality ingredients (100% grass-fed beef and Kentucky cheeses, etc). I went with a bison burger on regular bun with gouda cheese and bacon, and sweet potato fries as my side. The wait for the burger was a little longer than I expected, especially considering there was no line when we ordered. Still, it was reasonable, and great to know your burger is made fresh. After we received our burgers, we made our way to the toppings bar. The condiment bar was smaller than I expected. But this is a small place, and it was definitely sufficient. There are the standard items like lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo. Plus a few creative toppings like chipotle mayo, pickled jalapeno, fresh jalapeno, salsa, etc. My absolute favorite part about this condiment bar is their bottled sauce section. I'm a sauce-aholic and they have about twenty homemade sauces to choose from. All the common dressings (ranch, thousand island, etc), plus horseradish, cilantro mayo, wasabi mayo, whole grain mustard, etc. Awesome! The only thing I didn't see was a sauce that would pair well with the sweet potato fries, though after reading some reviews, I might have missed the honey. Finally, most importantly, let's talk about taste. Honestly, I was a little disappointed. My burger was cooked beyond the medium I requested, and the meat was a bit dry and bland. Next time, I'd pick the angus in hopes that it'd be juicier. And I'd order the blackened seasoning add-on at the counter to help with the flavor (strange that they don't season the meat unless you pay for it). I will say, the sweet potato fries were the star of my meal. They were delicious. Soft yet crispy and well seasoned. Some of the best sweet potato fries in the city. Anyway, yeah, I just wasn't overly excited about my burger. It was good for sure, but there's many other great burgers in town. I wouldn't put it in the top five burger places in Louisville.

Driving down Frankfort Avenue. Was hungry. Pulled into Bluegrass Burgers. Ordered the bison. With bacon. And cheddar. Added some chipotle mayo. Lettuce. Pickle. Jalapeno. Honestly? A little bland. Needed to add ketchup. Shame. Enjoyed it, though. Enjoyed the experience. Bill was $30 for my wife and I. A little steep for a burger joint. But it's a good burger. Bluegrass Burger has a condiment bar. Like that part. Small condiment bar, but a condiment bar. WW Cousins' condiment bar is like 10x the size of BB's. Overall, I rate BB high. Good place. Really good place. Not a great place.

While checking in here yesterday I realized that I haven't reviewed this place! I'm not sure how that one got past me. This isn't really a weekly, monthly, or even quarterly burger joint for me, but I do like it. I normally try to visit at least once or twice a year. I am a fan of this place. Great burgers! A condiment bar! It's local! It's better than your average fast food burger since it's grass fed meat, but it's not in the gourmet 11-15 dollar price range. You'll find the veggie & turkey burger for 7-8 dollars here while the bluegrass & bison burgers are 9-10 dollars. Bluegrass Burgers does get a few extra points because it's one of the few places where you can add an extra patty to your burger for a reasonable price. They have other things on their menu including milkshakes(of Comfy Cow fame) & dessert items including local favorites: Cellar Door Chocolates, Comfy Cow Ice Cream, & Kizito Cookies. You'll probably spend between 12-14 bucks for a burger, any premium toppings you might want, a side, & drink. While I love this place, it always seems like a place where you should be spending 2 to 3 bucks less for what I listed above. Some of the places I go, I take notice of the prices in the event that you want to bring along a date, friend, or family member. This is a perfect place to bring someone along, but with a 24-28 dollar price tag for 2, there are other places I'd rather go. With that being said, I can forgive paying a little more because this place is local so I'll definitely continue visiting. One thing that does standout about Bluegrass Burgers is how sweet the sweet potato fries are. The sweet potato fries are a must side when visiting! While eating in yesterday, I did notice that this place seems to be cleaner than in visits of the past. During past visits, it always seemed slightly unorganized. I say that with love... almost like a beautiful mess. Side notes: -- Always go Bison -- You can't go wrong with the sweet potato fries -- Condiment bar -- You don't have to wait very long on your order -- If you like white cheddar then definitely order Kenny's white cheddar as a topping -- Desserts are from local companies -- Friendly staff during my visits

I haven't had a dine in experience yet but I have placed many to go order since its only 3 minutes away from where I work. My coworker and I love this place. The second time I came in for a to go order, she already knew my name! My favorite so far is the ahi tuna (ask for medium rare if you want to see red) with a side of sweet potato fries. They have a topping bar which include everything you need from lettuce, tomato, to even spicy ketchup! Im still trying to figure out what sauce I should put in my burger. I used ranch (which in my case is good with everything) with my burger. Nomnomnom! Don't forget to get the smoked honey with your sweet potato fries.

Bluegrass Burgers was a pleasant surprise. I frequently pass by this establishment when heading down to Patrick's, FABD, Silver Dollar, Osaka and Hilltop Tavern, but never really gave it much thought. After reading the reviews and wanting a good burger I took a leap of faith and went. I ordered the turkey burger with smoked gouda cheese. I also added grilled onions & mushroom, avocado, mayo & whole grain dijon mustard. The meat was beautifully cook. Very juicy with great flavor! The hand cut fries were also great. I ended up finishing my sandwich but couldn't finish the fries. Yummy yummy! My friend had the black Angus burger with swiss and mushrooms with a side of coleslaw. She also ate all of hers. Hahaha! I loved the topping bar. There were lots of sauces, condiments and toppings like lettuce, pickles & tomatoes. Awesome!!! I actually recommend Bluegrass Burgers to a friend for dinner. She and her husband went and also lived it. She had the ahi tuna patty with a gluten free bun. Loved it! I was really happy to make a recommendation and the other party enjoyed it with an "excellent" exclamation. :) The prices are also decent. My burger was $8-9 I think. This included the fries. It was a little more per topping, but that was perfect ok with me. The inside isn't much too look at, but I did like the bar top type table that was hooked to the wall. If you sit there you get a great view of Frankfort Avenue! I'll be a frequent visitor when in the need for a good burger!

I wanted to try Bluegrass Burgers again after driving by almost daily as well as reading the Yelp reviews. I hadn't eaten there since their first year of business and thought I should see how they had evolved. I made plans to meet up with two friends there for a casual, Monday night dinner. I decided on the garden burger despite the fact that it was not made in house and was probably a standard, frozen patty. I could have opted for the homemade, black bean patty but was advised that it had a soft texture. In fact, it was compared to the consistency of burrito filling. Nope, going for the veggie burger. Tricked it out with smoked Gouda, my favorite cheese, topside and sweet potato fries on the side (both at a slight up charge). The burger was, as I anticipated, your run-of-the-mill, commercial patty. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Upside, the cheese was good as were the toppings offered on the buffet - especially the pickles. However, the highlight was the sweet potato fries with smoked honey dipping sauce. Delicious! The portions were sizable and I was definitely full at the end of the meal. My friends had the bluegrass burger and the ahi filet. They both enjoyed their choices thoroughly. Bluegrass Burgers is a solid option for meat eaters and bean patty loving vegetarians. I appreciate the attention to detail in some areas of the menu like the condiments and toppings and the attempt to support local food suppliers like Kenny's cheese and Comfy Cow. I do wish they were a little more inventive with their non-meat offerings. I may be back in the future for the sweet potato fries, but don't see stopping in regularly.

We have tried just about every burger place in town and this ranks right at the top. We ordered bluegrass burgers. Mine with chipoltle cheddar and my dining partner with tomato basil cheddar cheese. The selection of toppings is different from anyplace else in town but not so eclectic that it borders on strange. The place is very clean and the service was great.

The meat here was very good, cooked well and full on flavor. I had the Bluegrass Burger to give the namesake dish a try. Fries were shoestring in nature and were delightful. Staff friendly and accommodating. My only complaint is the buns the actual burgers are served on: very large and dry after being slightly grilled. They bun was overwhelming and stole the show by absorbing any other favors. After a few bites I ditched the top of the bun, which was an improvement. I think a less dry and smaller bun would bring balance to their burgers and greatly improve the experience, taking an OK meal to a great one.

Louisville, KY supposedly the birthplace of the cheeseburger definitely has some of the best burger places in the country and Bluegrass Burgers is on the list. I had a Bluegrass Burger (#1 on the menu) 100% grass fed hormone and antibiotic free covered in melted tomato basil cheddar on a sourdough bun along with sweetpotato fries! Burger tasted fresh out the backyard good! They had cups of honey for the fries and a toppings bar with over 20toppings!

Very good burger. Was tasty and like that you can put your own stuff on it and as much as you want. Yummy!! They were very nice and yes they have gluten free buns. Yahoo!! The 4 star is the French fries. They were cool and not very good. I would come again for sure.

So you know when you're right in the middle of doing something and all of a sudden you're like, "okay, I need a burger right now... not just any burger, but a huge, juicy burger made with love!" Yup, I knew you'd understand. Back in my younger days I used to work at a coffee shop not far from this place. As I would drive by in the heat of summer with my windows rolled down I would smell the most amazing meaty aromas. I couldn't resist for long. I came here on a slow Wednesday afternoon and didn't expect much, so imagine my surprise when I opened the door and saw a huge, well stocked *free* toppings bar with all kinds of goodies, pretty much anything you could want on a burger. On inspection of the menu you will notice several great locally grown or crafted products. How cool is that? Meats and cheeses from Kentucky that taste like absolute heaven on a bun. Not only that but they have lots of protein options to meet anyone's needs; bison, turkey, ahi tuna and Angus. I ordered the Angus burger with cheddar cheese and some french fries. What a juicy and fragrant burger! We got our food, stocked up on veggies and sat at the bar next to the window to view beautiful Frankfurt Ave. I was really impressed and loved my experience. I dream of this place when I get that, "uh-oh I need meat fast" craving. Overall: Great burgers, pretty cheap for that great quality (I would say you'll probably spend about $13 for a burger w/cheese, fries and a drink), small interior with friendly staff and a great patio. I also love that this place uses ingredients that I could see grazing/growing in my backyard. I can't wait to come back when that need for red meat comes back around. :)

The food was really good. A little pricey for the size of the burgers but overall a good experience. The sweet potato fries were really good. They had a good combination of crunchy and sweetness to them. I also had the turkey burger. It was good but nothing made it stand out to me. I would recommend this place to a friend if they weren't too concerned with the price of burgers.

I love this place! It is very small inside, so it is easier to carry out. The biggest negative is that when they are crowded, it takes a long time to get food. That is because everything is made to order, which is great! The locally sourced meat is the bomb. It's a dangerous time for beef, especially ground beef; e coli and other problems including animals who have been treated with hormones and antibiotics have made consumers wary of hamburger consumption. This restaurant uses local sources of beef that is grass fed and antibiotic free. Not only do they serve beef and Bison burgers, they also have a great tuna steak and one of the best vegetarian black bean burgers I've ever tasted. There is a wide variety of specialty toppings and cheeses. They have a condiment bar with fresh ingredients. The fries are wonderful, especially the sweet potato fries! The only thing I haven't loved is the baked beans. They are bland and taste like they came straight from the can. The service is excellent and there is truly something for everyone here!

Really really miss their Philly cheesesteak, but the local meats (bison, bluegrass burger) and artisan cheeses make up for it. The topping bar is awesome and I love the varied sauces. Hand cut and sweet potato fries are excellent. Staff is always friendly and welcoming!

There was nothing wrong with this place...but I really like burgers and Louisville has some great burger places! Overall I would come back here for the sides...and get a burger while I was here. Not the best burger in town in my opinion but we had four different sides and they were all awesome. The sweet potato fries with smoked honey, homemade chips, regular fries, and onion rings...all good! The shakes and comfy cow ice cream were underwhelming...go to comfy cow instead. The seating was very minimal and the tall tables were way too tall for comfort. If you are in the area...and want an okay burger with super sides...try it out....but if not....try somewhere else.

This place is amazing. I've never had a turkey burger taste so amazing, seriously. The aroma of their french fries reminds me of funnel cakes, granted they don't taste like funnel cake, they're delicious. They have a vast assortment of condiments and free add ons. Never had a problem with my order being wrong and it's always tasty. Solid selection of beer and ice creams. The staff is cool, everyone's nice, never any problems. Sometimes they speak in Renaissancesque voices, I can dig it.

When we first started going they would load you up on fries, the last two times I ordered to go burgers and fries they skimped On the fries! The burgers are definitely good, they are my second choice in louisville (behind Grind) They offer udi's gluten free buns. Beef Burgers are prepared well, juicy and flavorful . Turkey burger lacks flavor, chicken was dry the one time I got it. They are very good at supporting local businesses which is a big bonus! Cellar door chocolates and comfy cow :) Great place for your after Burger sweet tooth! Local cheese too! They are equipped with a bunch of condiments and load up on whatever you would like for your burger. Black bean burger is not gluten free...bummer :( Be prepared to wait for your food! It's made to order. Pretty pricey too, but of you are used too Grind than you won't have sticker shock!

Just passing through Louisville on a road trip, looking for a quick and tasty bite. I had no idea that my life was about to change forever. Bluegrass Burger, you have ruined EVERY other cheeseburger on the planet. Your beautiful, crispy bacon with your sexy, salty pretzel bun, your grilled onions that were soft yet still crunchy, and your voluptuous burger that was the perfect amount of deliciously drippy without being grossly overly greasy... I want to devote my life to you, to honor and cherish you, from now until the end of time. Thank you, Bluegrass Burger. I leave you with these final parting words on the matter: Sweet potato fries with smoked honey dipping sauce.

If you go online, this place is always listed as having one of the best burgers in town by fans. I have to respectfully disagree. I don't have much to say in this review. Their burger just didn't seem that special. It was passable. I had the bluegrass burger with bleu cheese. Nothing was wrong with it but nothing stood out. I know a lot of people have loyalty here and I get why. It has a certain family feel inside. But aside from that, I don't see much appeal. Thus, 3-stars. I also didn't really like the idea of putting on my own lettuce, tomato, etc from the condiments bar. It seemed a little gross. Anywho, I doubt I'll be back. They didn't do anything wrong, I just don't think it's one of the best around and I'd rather have something I enjoy more. Side note: I tried to redeem the Yelp check-in offer with their employees and no one knew how to redeem it or help me. That was a little disappointing too.

This hole in the wall is sticky, nasty & dirty. I can't believe there are people saying they love this place. No a/c while you're trying to dine in this pretty expensive hole. They should try to clean it up & get their customers comfortable.

  • Michael T.

Food was OK, but when a restaurant associate alters the credit card receipt to increase the tip, that is completely unacceptable. I know this is not the restaurant's fault and more so an employee w no integrity, but I will not be going back and caution anyone who goes there to carefully monitor your credit card statement after visiting this place.

I really like the set up with the fixins bar and as a city person I think the price is good, but I got the grilled chicken and I wasn't that impressed. They cater to gluten free customers though and I really appreciate that. The service was also excellent.

So so. Had a Bison burger. Dry and nowhere near as good a Ted's Montana Grill. Asked for a chocolate shake but they were out. Asked for a coke but the self serve soda fountain appeared to be out of syrup. High praise for toppings bar, good sauces and vegetables.

Bluegrass Burgers was one of those longtime restaurants on my "to try" list, but for some reason or another, I never made it there. Finally, I went a few weeks ago on a Saturday with a friend. Despite wanting to try it for quite some time, I was not really sure what to expect. We pulled up front and walked inside. The space itself is on the smaller side, and you order at the counter, which everything is being made behind. There's a large menu board. It's somewhat limited in its overall options (burgers, fries, etc.), but within those options, there are quite a few varieties! I opted for the bison burger and sweet potato fries. (My friend had the beef burger and regular fries.) The tables were all full, so we sat at the bar (not alcohol, just the style) lining the front window. The location provided for good people watching while waiting for our names to be called. Once they call your name, the fun really begins. It's time to hit up the toppings bar. (There are premium toppings available for additional costs. There are also a variety of cheeses you can order for your burger, which I appreciated. Yay, gouda!) While this bar isn't as large as others I've visited at other restaurants (like WW Cousin's), it does win for the most unique toppings bar! A variety of sauces, salsas, vegetables, and more were available for your burger (and fries, if you choose... I found a few sauces I had with my sweet potato fries). I'd love to go back to have even more toppings. To be honest, thinking back to this has me drooling right now. For some reason I can't particularly put my finger on, I think there's a tiny bit of room for improvement. I'm not certain why, because I really did enjoy Bluegrass Burgers and MUST go back soon. I want that burger, order of fries, and toppings bar NOW. (Oh, btw... If you're particular about fries, as I am, their regular fries are fairly skinny and good for a regular fry. I'll probably still opt for the sweet potato fries though. And for gluten-free folks, they have gluten-free buns!)

Used to be one of my favorite places to eat and don't get me wrong, I love their fries and their condiment/topping bar. The last time I went here the food took a very long time to come and my burger was burnt along with my mothers even though I specifically ordered my burger medium. I was disappointed when I though I would be giving myself a treat and instead got a burnt burger.

I have been to bluegrass burgers many times now. They were one of my favorite burger places when coming to louisville. However, I doubt I will go there again. Service has gone downhill, and I wonder if they care if any of their customers return. Like their good tasting burgers, their lack of customer service has been consistent throughout my recent visits. On my most recent visit, my pregnant wife called in a to-go order for herself. I stopped in to pick it up, after waiting a while in line, I paid and was told that I would need to wait for the sweet potato fries to finish cooking. I waited, for 15 minutes. I waited for the order, while watching 4 orders that were placed after hers go out with sides of sweet potato fries. I do not place blame on the employees, but on management who apparently has not communicated expectations and priorities of customer service to the staff. While they have good tasting burgers, and are active in the local louisville business scene, I will not return, and cannot recommend them any longer, as it seems that they have lost touch with what matters: their customers.

Organic or all natural, this place is the best! Nice clean, neat restaurant with a very quaint atmosphere. Fairly quiet despite the all the business they get. They have 1 TV in the dinning area. Tables are comfortably spaced from each other. I ordered the grass fed all beef burger with mushrooms and onions with pepperjack cheese. AWESOME! I have never had a better burger. I also got a Sugar Cookie that was baked by a local baker and it was HUGE and DELISH! I shared it with my 2 sons who ate it all up! The kids' meals were so good, that my kids wouldn't even give me a bite. So 2 thumbs up! I wish this place was closer to OH and I will definitely have to stop back in when passing through. YES! I would recommend this place!

I have found the best burger in Louisville! I have been on the hunt for a good burger for the longest time. Bluegrass Burgers did not disappoint me like the many other places I have tried. The burgers are perfect for a few reasons: Great meat: grass fed beef and bison, meaty, lean but not too lean Perfectly sized: just enough to fill me up without that bloated, guilty, greasy feeling I get from Five Guys, Smash Burger or Mussel and Burger Bar. The bun to meat ratio is at a respectable 1:1.1 so you are guaranteed a bite of meat with every bite of bun. The bun and patty are not so thick where one has to smash down the burger, then dislocate a jaw to eat it. Perfectly seasoned: only lightly salted so I can taste the meat, not the salt. The choices: bison is a new favorite for me, and the mushrooms were oh so good. (NOT canned!) The variety of sauces goes far beyond the basic white, yellow and red. Perfectly cooked: hubby and I both asked for and received "medium" doneness. For these reasons, I declare the bison burger and hubby's Black Angus the best burgers of Louisville.

I don't get the hype about Bluegrass Burgers. The burgers, fries, and onion rings are all good but not great, and certainly not the best ever. The toppings bar where you dress your own burger is not my preference and the dining area is small and uncomfortable. If you want a good passable burger it's ok, but it's not the burger experience of a lifetime.

Wonderful place to grab a burger. First time going, decided to try the bison burger, and it was awesome. They also have pretzel buns, so that was a plus for me. Fries were delicious!

We love this place. When you want a good, dependable burger, this is the spot to go. I typically get the chicken sandwich with pepperjack cheese and regular fries. My husband loves the angus burger and sweet potato fries. Only hang ups: if you try to call in an order, they sometimes won't answer the phone. Also, it's a small place and in the winter doesn't have a ton of indoor space. If you live around there, it's great for takeout!

  • Susan F.

The girl waiting on us was so bubbily and helpful; however, the bison burgers were a big disappointment. We ordered med rare and they were well done. A gift certificate was the reason for coming, but we'll not be back.

Interesting place. I had always heard people talk about this place and finally decided to try it for myself. It takes an incredibly long time to order and get your food, but my bison burger was pretty good. I may go back at some point, but it is not one of those places where I am dying to go back soon.

I've been here twice and I've been pleased both times. I'm gluten intolerant, so finding a good burger place where I don't get sick is difficult. I've had their Bison and Angus burgers, I like both but prefer the Angus burger. Their fries are good and safe for me to eat (fried separately). I love getting to eat my burger with a bun and fries and not get sick! I also love the local cheeses available and the fact that their beef and bison are KY Grass fed! They have ice cream and chocolate from local businesses too. They offer gluten free beer although I've not wanted one the 2 times I've been. I really like the toppings bar which gives me total control over the sauces I want on my burger as well as any veggies I want. I don't put too much on my burger because I like to enjoy the taste of the meat but a little extra flavor is always nice. I'll definitely be back but it's not somewhere I have to visit all the time.

  • Seth Y.

Excellent burgers, cooked to perfection. All the extras were a viable part of the whole experience and not an afterthought. Bacon Salted Chips are housemade and always crispy and fresh. The pretzel bun was soft, brushed with butter and lightly salted. The details set this place apart.

I had friends in from out of town one Friday night in February. I was so excited to take them here...I've heard wonderful things about it and I was especially enthralled that they served grass-fed beef. The six of us arrived maybe about a half hour before closing and the restaurant was empty except for one other group. We asked for our order to go. I ordered my burger with bleu cheese and bacon and was informed they were out of bacon, so I chose onions instead. When we arrived home with our meals, out of the six of us, only TWO of us received what we ordered. Mine didn't have onions...it had mushrooms. I hate mushrooms. Bad enough they were out of bacon, but even worse they put mushrooms on my burger. One of my friends took one bite out of her burger and it was completely red. I'm not even sure it was entirely dead. She ate her fries and that was it. I felt so bad that not only did she pay for a burger that she didn't eat, but on a rare visit from out-of-town friends, we chose to take them HERE and were incredibly disappointed when there are SO many other good restaurants in town. We will not be back.

Great little burger joint in what appears to be an old service station. Mahi Mahi burgers, Bison, and an incredible grilled chicken sandwich all dressed with artisan greens and served with a traditional side of your choice. An ala carte fixins bar lets you detail your dinner. Nice place. Neighborhood vibe.

Really dang good burgers. I love a place that asks how I want my burger cooked. And local, artisan cheeses! I love cheese. I love all the cheeses. Secondly, their toppings bar is great. Fresh veggies, spreads and salsas, they really offer ways to spruce up an already satisfying eat. Check out the blue Gouda cheese for the burger and the cilantro spread. Heck, add on the cucumber fresca and you've reached perfection. My only wish, and this is a preference not a criticism, I wish the fries were a little thicker cut. Don't get me wrong, they were great; I just like 'em a little meatier.

Was it a fluke? I read reviews before going, we got 2 bison burgers, a regular fry and a sweet potato fry. But the burgers were so so dry. And the "dress your own burger" idea is cool, but I put pineapple and steak sauce on mine and it was really underwhelming in taste. But by that point, I was low on mixing options and just had to deal with it. My husband went the traditional route and he wasn't impressed either. Its so cool to have grass fed local meat, and so I don't want to write it off, but taste-wise, I was disappointed, especially for the price. Next time I won't be getting the bison and will add cheese to see if that will hold in some moisture.

Bluegrass Burger is the best burger place in Louisville!! So good! Local meat, local cheeses (option), a cart chalk-full of sauces, toppings, and relishes. And the fries?? AMAZING! Crispy, thin, and still have that slight give when you bite them. I drive 20min just to get one of these amazing burgers after a long day at school/work. Mmm I'm craving one right now! (P.S. Go with the bison!)

Every now and again, one craves a delicious burger. Not just s simple burger- but a dish that's made with ingenuity. With love. With creativity. Something above and beyond the average offering on an average menu. The trick is finding a burger place that does one thing and does it well. And I gotta say that Bluegrass Burger delivers. They offer a dangerous combo of both a tasty burger and endless options allowing you to create a Hamburger Frankenstein. "Gaaarrr....Pickles....Bad...Aristan Cheese Good!" Bluegrass Burger is a casual burger joint that boasts all local, hormone-free beef. Does that really make difference? Not sure, but with the food being as delicious as it is, I'm not willing to question it. I've sampled the Black Angus Beef Burger, the Bison Burger and even the Grilled Chicken. Each one is pretty dang tasty. Along with an extraordinaire topping bar that assumes no two burger creations will be the same, the counter serves a small selection of quality beer and dessert option that only help to compliment each burger. The burgers truly hit the spot for that craving, but some might balk at the $8+ price once you add some toppings. The restaurant itself is unassuming and nothing fancy. If you seek the dining ambiance and experience of the newer burger bistros, than you might consider visiting elsewhere. The simple seating and such are a concession for the behind-the-counter-magic. And to weigh in on the famous sweet potato fries, I much preferred the even tastier regular fries. But that's more of a "to each their own" when considering potato based sides on that one.

We came. We ate. We were not impressed. Did not live up to the hype. Dry and flavorless, plus some rude service does not equate to an experience that I want to relive. Like, ever. I'll take my cash to Grind or MBB.

Food was okay, I probably won't go back. Very small dining area. Whoever rated this a good place for kids obviously is not a parent. More tables for two people than a family. Burger was overcooked and dry. Sweet potato fries were good best part of the meal.

My husband and I are both gluten free eaters and we had heard they have gluten free buns. That is great considering I can't remember the last time I had a burger with a bun. We decided to get out this evening and check it out. It is slightly sleeting outside, but the roads are fine. As we pulled up, we could see 3 employees staring at us from inside...we weren't sure why. The door was unlocked and we saw two customers sitting and waiting for their food that was ON THE GRILL. When we walked to to the counter a young girl looked at us, then turned back to the cook who said "she told us to close. We are done." The girl then let us know they were closed due to the weather. As I previously stated, there were 3 employees there, 2 customers and food on the grill. Would it have been that difficult to serve two more customers who were excited to try the food here for the first time?! They could have chosen to turn us into happy, returning customers. But instead turned us into unhappy patrons who have decided to write off Bluegrass Burgers completely. Customer service goes a long way, folks! Oh, and it was only 6pm...they should be open until 9pm.

Great burger place with local grass fed beef, bison, and other meats. Great additions and stuff to make it personal.

  • Lori T.

This place is great because they have gluten free buns and beer, KY grass fed beef, local foods, and good for kids. Customer service could be better, as it's not the friendliest place. It's a small place , so seating isn't great. Bathrooms are terrible. The women's restroom door doesn't shut unless you are strong enough to lift it up then slam it shut. Lol! Still, we keep coming back because the food is good, GF buns, local, and they have a great toppings bar.

Bison! Bison! Bison!!! I said, BISON! Get the Bison burger. Yum. This is local, grass fed, meat. I love me some local meat! I never get cheese on my burgers,BUT...I got some local CHIPOTLE jack cheese...OMG! Fixings are all up to you and I suggest everything, the fries done extra crispy, the coleslaw, the onion rings AND a beer to wash down this yummy stuff!! This is a burger joint-not fancy, but mmmmm...good. Get yourself some local meat when you come down to Louisville!

Bluegrass burgers can be easy to miss when you're driving down Frankfort Ave. Even though I've been here quite a few times, I still look for the FABD sign (when heading east) or the Boombozz sign (when heading west) so I can be on the lookout. The minimal signage and curb visibility carry over in the simple, bare bones interior. These folks are all about the food. The bison burger is great, as is the regular burger. I like the regular fries better than the sweet potato fries, but only because it tastes like they may add a little something sweet (sugar? vanilla?) to the seasoning mix and I like mine a little more on the savory side. If you like a good, flat-top cooked burger but are also picky about where your beef comes from, this is your little slice of heaven. Meat is locally sourced and (the beef at least, not sure on bison) grass-fed. The burger bar is full of all the usual toppings you might want, as well as some extras -- wasabi or chipotle mayo, for example. Check out the beer offerings as well -- nice selection for a small place specializing in burgers.

Excellent burger place. Very simple, straight-forward menu that lets you build your own burger (or other sandwich). I don't dress my burgers up too much because I eat the burger for the MEAT not the toppings but they did have a nice little toppings bar that offered a nice variety if you're into that sort of thing. I had the grass-fed angus beef, ordered medium and COOKED medium which is always important to me. I feel a lot of places assume you don't really know what you are asking for and always cook your meat one step up from what you asked for. This burger was perfectly prepared. The limited toppings I chose (cheddar and sauteed mushrooms) were excellent, giving me a simple, delicious burger. The fries were decent. I hear good things about the sweet potato fries, I will have to try them next time. The facility itself is pretty small but has nice ambience, manages to not feel too cramped even when they are a little busy. Overall it's probably one of the best places to get a burger in the city, they have some other options like a bison burger or pork burger, but nothing too exotic if you were looking for something comparable to Hammerheads or Meat. I'd recommend stopping by if you're craving a legit burger that is still reasonably priced.

Food was good. Got the cheapest cheeseburger ($7.29) and was pleased with it (and the grilled onions). I didn't try the sweet potato fries but the wife loved them. I like that they give the option to do half regular fries and half sweet. Regular fries didn't impress. Kids got grilled cheese and really seemed to like it. The guy behind the counter was very nice. Not really a kid friendly place, at least not younger ones. Most of the seating is bar height which doesn't work for toddlers (they had no booster seats). Also, drinks do not come with kids meals like they do most places. It's also not a place for groups. They don't have tables for more than four people or a way to push some together since space is so tight. This used to be a carry-out pizza place. The floors were also very slick.

The build your own burger concept can be truly glorious or a hazard. It's difficult to review based on the many toppings and combinations you can choose. With that said, I've decided to review their basics. My bun has been dry two out of the three previous visits. The burger was quality meat that was a bit under seasoned and done to one temp only. If they get these basics nailed, it could be a great burger joint.

Hmmm... This is a tough one. I see all the reviews calling it the best burger in town and I want to believe. However I just can't give it the full 5 stars. I stopped by for lunch one afternoon and got a bison burger and some fries. The meal was served up pretty quickly and I was excited to try this burger I had heard so much about. Now don't get me wrong, it was a great burger, it was just... a bit lackluster. My burger was a bit on the dry side, which is problem my only tangible complaint. Everything else was great; the fries, toppings bar, etc. I'll definitely be returning here, and maybe they'll win me over next time. Until then all I can say is that this is a great burger, just not quite the best.

Another weekend, another burger joint. Halloween weekend to be precise. Boys in tow and headed toward Hillcrest to check out the decorations, and of course, they want to stop to eat because Daddy's made of money. :-/ And, of course, me being me, I have to pick the most expensive burger joint in the vicinity. Thanks Yelp (and others) for stoking my curiosity. You've likely heard enough from the other 10 reviewers so I won't bore you with the details, but everything looked good enough that both my kids decided they wanted a full-size adult meal so instead of dropping the $4 for a kids' meal it's $10 a piece. Thanks fresh ingredients and cool menu. So, 2 bison burgers and a cheesesteak later, everyone is full and satisfied. My one complaint is that I think they need to up the beef-to-bun ratio. There's a certain amount of beef that needs to be present in a great burger and it should extend to at least near the edge of the bun. They were a little short by about a half-inch all the way around. Tasty beef, but felt a little cheated. My personal opinion but it counts for something. And the sweet potato fries are pretty awesome. Far better than Smashburger.

Now I wouldn't consider myself a burger connoisseur by any means but I absolutely love eating a Bluegrass Burgers. Their burgers are succulent, juicy, and grilled to perfection. Whether you're a veggie head or carnivore, this place has something for you and it's all local and grass fed. A burger with a side of fries will cost you anywhere from $7 to $9. Adding applewood smoked bacon, avocado, or grilled mushrooms will cost you an extra 50 cents. But they also have an amazing condiment bar that's FREE with just about every topping your heart could desire. In addition to that, there are also at least 6 sauces that you could choose to go along with it. I highly recommend this joint as a great place to grab a quick lunch or dinner.

Grabbing a burger for lunch is not something I'd consider to be an exciting excursion but I'd be lying if I didn't say going to Bluegrass Burgers does fall into that category. They have toppings for every occasion of burger you could imagine, maybe even some that you'd be hard-pressed to dream up uses for. I'm talking to you pickled ginger...Perhaps I'll get more adventurous on my next trip there. This time I was too overcome with excitement for the avocado as a topping! They also have sauces galore. The spicy ketchup tasted a bit off to me--it was too sweet and tasted like it had cinnamon in it. The cilantro sauce was a nice and unique addition to my burger, which in itself was out of this world. I'll be back here soon to try the sweet potato fries because the regular ones were only ok. On the plus side they have malt vinegar to make 'em British and better!

We had lunch here yesterday. We both had the bison burger. I got mine rare and my husband got his medium rare. Both burgers were cooked as ordered. The burgers were very juicy and flavorful. I really liked the topping bar and the wide variety of sauces. I chose the fries as my side and they arrived hot and crispy. Husband ordered the baked beans, which were also very warm and tasty. I want to try to turkey burger, so I'll be back again.

I'm not one to be concerned with preservatives or the like, but when it makes my meat taste this good, I'm for it! I mean this place is good! You can get a burger everywhere - from your lowly fast food joint to fancy steak houses. But y'all will be hard pressed to find a burger better than what the folks at Bluegrass Burgers serve up daily. The possibilities are endless at this place. You can get hot toppings - grilled onions bacon, etc. - or you can head over to the topping bar and load up your burger with pickles, raw onions, lettuce, etc. They offer several local cheeses for your burgers, too. I'm going to keep this review short. This place is great. The burgers actually taste like meat and are extremely juicy. Don't pass up this one-of-a-kind burger joint on Frankfort Ave. Edit: My wife's favorite thing about this place was that they offer gluten-free buns at no extra charge.

Nasty owner lady. Too bad because I would bet the other owners wouldn't be happy to hear it. Went there to eat one night, placed our order and sat down. We were passed over by others that came in after us and I went to find out what was going on. They got our burgers out to us right away but not cooked correctly. Didn't care at first because we were starving but after a few bites and it did not taste good I took it back to the counter. **INsert nasty owner lady** I told her my burger wasn't cooked correctly (got well done instead of medium rare) and she just said, "I'll give you your money back then"! Um Wow! Didn't even offer to remake it for me. Well if that is customer service then I don't want to know you or your store. Good luck with that.

If you've never had grass fed beef before, don't worry. That slightly different aroma and taste is normal. In fact, I grew up on grass fed beef and prefer it over your mass market, fatty, grain fed beef. I came here after trying to get into several other places for lunch, only to find them closed on Sundays. What's an out-of-towner to do? Turn to yelp. Once again yelp took me by the hand and guided me to a pleasant experience. If your in the mood for a burger, beef or bison, then I highly recommend this place. As other reviewers have mentioned, order the sweet potato fries!

Just got back from this place. I had the grilled chicken which was tasty and juicy. My husband had beef burger and he said that he would come back for another one. We are not burger lovers but we enjoy the food here. You can add any topping you want with additional costs and they are good. The sweet potato fries and onion rings were crispy and tasty too..

I've had a lot of burgers in my time, and a few of them have been great burger but this place blew me away. The free toppings bar and the simple, but decadent menu of patty and cheese options are perfection. And the hand cut fries are perfect. They're not too big or too small or too limp. This place is an absolute must try. I can't wait to go back.

Several friends have told me that this was the best burger to be had in Louisville. I still think Flanagan's holds a slight edge, but Bluegrass Burgers is definitely legit. Although, I am against any perversion of french fries with non-potatoes, my wife and several friends assure me the Sweet Potato Fries are quite good. Overall: Great Burger. Bit pricey.

I read great reviews about Bluegrass Burgers so my wife and I decided to take our friends here for dinner when they came to visit. Out of the six of us, only two got what we ordered. My wife ordered a burger, medium, with blue cheese and bacon. They said they were out of bacon so she got grilled onions instead. When we got home she discovered her burger was over cooked and topped with mushrooms instead of onions. Another in our party ordered her burger medium-well and hers was basically rare. I ordered a bison burger, but after all that I can't be sure they didn't just give me beef. It all tasted good, but we were the only ones in the restaurant at the time. How hard is it to get a burger order right? Especially since we can put our own toppings on. If you get it to go make sure you double check your order before leaving.

Easily one of the better burgers I've had in a long time. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable, they were able to tell me everything about my burger's history short of the cows name. The day I visited was very low-key, only a few people came and went during my meal. Albeit I had missed your typical lunch rush crowd and it was far too early for dinner... unless you're a senior citizen.

When I want a burger and a shake this is my favorite go to local spot. Fresh burgers of your choice - I'm a fan of the Bison. Numerous cheese choices, including local Kenny's Farmhouse cheeses. A vast toppings bar that allows you to dress your burger in your favorite fashion. For fries - regular, sweet potato, etc. They also have hot dog goodness. The milk shakes are made with local Comfy Cow ice cream - OMG. Quite possibly my favorite thing in the world. Sometimes I just stop in for a shake. I love buying Local and this spot fits the bill perfectly.

I stopped by Bluegrass Burgers on my way back from work. I've had friends and co-workers tell me about the burgers at this place, with some going so far as to refer to it as the "best burger place in town". So I had to try it. I decided to get the bison burger. I have to say it was a truly juicy burger. They even ask you how you want your burger cooked, which I think is great because not everybody wants an overcooked, charred, tough-as-leather piece of meat. There are several cheeses and free toppings to choose from. The fries were pretty good too. I'm definitely going back to try the other burgers.

Since I no longer own a competing restaurant, I decided to stop by with my family last night for a post trick-or-treat dinner. I had heard various things, and decided to give it a shot. Honestly, I really liked it. We were there late and I know that often makes people frustrated, but they treated us well. Here is what I liked: I loved the flavor of the burger, I loved loved loved that they asked how I wanted it cooked and then actually did it Medium rare without arguing about it. I hate it when servers object to me wanting a burger Mid Rare. moving on. I liked the blue cheese and I liked the choice of sauces. The choice of toppings was ok, but did not blow my socks off. Although the Pico was great. The flavor of my burger was spot on. Honestly , I like them cooked on a flat top a little better. The fried had good flavor, but were a little small. Ok now for the dislikes: My wife got the porto burger. It was marinated in Balsamic before grilling. This gave it a slimy texture but the flavor was good. The main thing I did not like was the price. I understand the local angle, but $7.39 for a single 1/4 pound is too high. Frankly, the flavor is not that much different than other providers and the cost is just too much. another dislike, no combos. At least if they do, they are hard to see. The only other negative is that the menu is hard to easily comprehend. They list that they have kenny's cheese, but do not list the varieties. They need to make a board that shows what they have in stock. I love kenny's. All in all, I will go back.

The sweet potato fries are a must...pretty much like dessert! This is my favorite burger in Louisville...great burgers and topping bar. Local meat/cheese. Friendly staff. Downside is that it smaller, and can get crowded, especially on a Satureday.

Oh damn that was so good. I want another burger. Must be the (blue)grass fed cows passing their happiness on to me. And because the cows and bison are pasture-raised, I get to feel smug about making choices that are better for the earth at the same time that I eat an amazing burger. Also, best sweet potato fries anywhere. Worth going out of your way. I'll be back tomorrow.

This place. THIS PLACE. OHMYYUM. The burgers are fantastic. I had the bison burger with pepper jack cheese and sauteed mushrooms added on... and it was bisontastic. Cooked perfectly, so very juicy, and all around mouthwatering. The free toppings bar looked so fresh and contained a great deal of variety. My husband and I shared an order of fries, and there was more than enough for the two of us. Don't expect to pay McDonald's prices for these meaty treasures. Having such prime, local ingredients is going to cost you, but the boy and I payed a little over $20 for a bison burger (with cheese and mushrooms added on), a beef burger (with cheese added on), an order of small fries and two drinks. Worth.every.penny. And more.

I will always judge burgers based on my favorite burger of all time which can be found at Peter Luger's in Brooklyn. After moving to Louisville my favorite burger thus far has been at the Silver Dollar where they have grass fed beef as well (the grass fed option at Silver Dollar is an extra $3). Its a great burger, but invariably, when I want to get in and out with my food so I can go home, going to a bar kills 45 minutes to an hour. Enter Bluegrass Burgers: I had the black angus burger, medium with pepper jack, avocado, and bacon. I layered mine with chipotle mayo, lettuce, tomato, and onion. The real deal is the meat. Texture is spot on. It doesn't crumble in your hands, nor does is it rubbery or chewy which is the other extreme. Its just right. My burger was cooked perfectly. The smell and taste of the beef is pure animal. Those who buy their meat directly from a farmer will know what I mean. It is unlike anything you will get at a supermarket or chain burger place (Red Robin, Chili's etc). It smells and tastes like real beef. The bacon was thick and cooked in that sweet spot which is slightly chewy but not crispy. Toppings were fresh, and to be honest, I would have skipped the avocado because by then it becomes flavor overload. All this plus fries set me back about $9.73. Well worth it. Ive had mediocre burgers for twice that. Bluegrass makes a well constructed burger for sure. I cant give it four stars because of my personal bias towards Peter Luger's, however this is one of the best burgers I have had. That being said, If I want bourbon with by burger, I will gladly go to Silver Dollar. Silver Dollar's burger is as good, however you will pay an upcharge for grass fed meat-which is OK by me since their drink selection is awesome. But, at the end of a long day when I just want my food to go and don't have 45 minutes to kill, I will definitely go to Bluegrass.

Local, grass fed beef and bison, and a variety of other "burger" choices (chicken, tuna, veggie, etc.). They have a toppings bar for free cold toppings and sauces (fresh jalepenos & chipotle mayo, among normal burger toppings), and also hot toppings for extra (cheese, sauteed peppers and mushrooms, avocado, etc). I had the beef with pepperjack, hubs had the bison with gouda and sauteed mushrooms. The burgers were very flavorful and juicy. The fries that come with every burger (both regular and sweet potato) were thin and perfectly crispy. Desserts included Comfy Cow ice cream, Cellar Door chocolates, and Kizito cookies. Love the local focus. So happy to have this place in Louisville! Can't wait to go back!

I have been transitioning from a vegetarian diet and was super excited to find a restaurant serving grass fed local beef. I ordered the black angus burger with blue cheese and topped it with onions, buffalo sauce, lettuce, and tomato form the toppings bar. The burger was fantastic and the frys were Amazing. Not to mention the great pickles at the toppings bar and decent beer selection. I will definitely be returning soon!

Since my first visit when the place first opened I have not been back until today when I was craving a burger. I got the beef burger with pepperjack, bacon and avocado. It took a while for my order to come out, but I remember this was how it goes here. Burger looked delicious, threw some BBQ and onions on and took my long awaited first bite. Hmmm that sure is one tough piece of lettuce. Wait I didn't get lettuce. Turns out the paper divider for the cheese was left on for extra flavor. I usually don't say anything, but I just paid almost $12 for my lunch. Took it to the counter, the guy at the counter was nice, apologized and told the cook. He seemed annoyed, simply said just throw it away, not acknowledging the mistake. A simple apology from the cook would have been warranted I think, maybe next meal is on us this was a rare mistake, something other than just being dismissive. I have eaten more burgers than I can count in my life, one before this was at BURGR in Las Vegas. I doubt this is how chef Ramsey would have handled packaging in a burger. After this I think I will stick with Homerun and Fiveguys. Krispy Kreme flavored sweet potato fries.......amazing!!!!! Not sure what I expected but this place easily exceeded my expectations. First impression, I found the menu to be a little annoying, even though there is not much on it was just not easy to figure out what I wanted right away. I prefer signature burgers already with toppings combined and when I see it think to myself " that sounds good". Not sure why they chose to charge extra for certain toppings then throw in the fries or coleslaw with the price of the burger, makes more sense to do it the other way. So I had a beef n bacon with bleu cheese and for a side the sweet potato fries. Burger in a word.....excellent. The beef was cooked perfect, bacon crisp but not burnt, bun was just right. Sometimes the bun kills the burger, this one complimented it. Not a big fan of the topping bar, I don't like buffets for a reason, food sitting out all day with random people contaminating the toppings with god knows what. So needless to say just a plain burger for me and it was great. (I would like to see BBQ sauce on the topping bar) Then I had a sweet potato fry. I was confused at first, I knew the flavor but not from a fry.........Krispy Kreme doughnut! Not sure if they run over and get the oil they cook the doughnuts in, but seriously flavor exactly. Something weird though, I loved the fries, but could not eat them all like I would a normal fry at a burger place. I will try again soon, maybe the burger filled me up. Highly recommend this place for a good burger. There are some issues but nothing major. The service was a bit slow for 3pm on a Wednesday. Only had 4 orders and it took a while, I would like to see how it runs during a lunch rush. Not much seating and it just didn't feel like somewhere to relax and have a good lunch. Parking is bad just because its on Frankfort and almost saw 2 cars get smashed backing out. So overall I will be back to try a different burger and regular fries because they do make a great burger with good ingredients.

Being a pescatarian I really only had two menu options -- veggie burger or portobello mushroom. I chose the veggie burger, which was fine but no great shakes, even with avocado and grilled onions added on. The fries, however, were very good -- nice and thin and crispy without being burnt. In the end, I don't know that I'd run back for another...I'd honestly much rather have the spinach burger at the BBC where I can also get a great beer.

Ambiance leaves a bit to be desired, but I LOVE the local fare! Great burgers and fries! Skip the expensive, fancy burgers - these are high quality, low cost!

A little off the beaten path but worth the trip. My son and I are on a quest for the best burger in every city we visit! Easy ordering, helpful staff, and quality food. You get healthy portion. The burger was very good, the fries were awesome, and the slaw was southerly sweet. Add all the "fixins" you want at their awesome burger bar which has some great things like chipolte mayonnaise. Will never visit Louisville again without visiting this burger heaven. Going to try the in-house bean burger next time.

On my first visit, I had the beef burger. It was nicely cooked (asked for medium) and had just the right amount of charring. It was also a bit peppery (maybe too much for some, but I like it that way) and was full of flavor. On a subsequent visit, I tried the bison and was equally impressed. The toppings choices are nice too. The fries were crispy, seasoned with sea salt and contrary to another review, they do hand-cut the fries. There is also a good selection of beer. I am now a "regular" here.

We had a party of 4. Three of our burgers were great, but the one that we ordered medium well was very undercooked. We let them know and they microwaved it and gave it back to us (now with warm toppings), instead of giving us a medium well burger. It was still very undercooked on the inside. We told them again and the lady (seemed to be a manager) was extremely rude. Finally they brought us a properly cooked burger, but we could have gone without the hassle and bad attitude. The food gets 4 stars, but the service and attitude gets 0.

Best burger. They have an amazing toppings bar but be careful not to smother the taste of the most delicious, meaty BEEF that's at the center. Its really hard not to do. But try just a cheese burger some time and you'll see why they go through all the trouble to use grassfed beef... reminds me of what hamburgers used to taste like when I was a kid.

This is solely a burger joint and they can't even be bothered to hand patty their own burgers. I had a bison burger that was pre-pattied and was probably frozen at some point. The fries were scant and soggy and the onion rings were even worse. I ordered grilled onions for my burger and it came without so the chef offered to put them on there afterwards. She pulled out what appeared to be also pre-cooked grilled onions that were awful. In total, my experience was awful. I live in Crescent Hill and was excited to have a local burger place but this "burger joint" can't even get it together enough to patty their own burgers or make their own fries. What else are they doing in the kitchen?? I will not be going back.
