UPDATE 6/24/14 This place should be called OMG BBQ! Sometimes smaller is better, the owner can focus on the quality of his product rather than who called in sick or how many table turns is he getting per hour. I've had a lot of BBQ and his is awesome. The Happy Hour specials can't be beat, filled up on 3 Brisket Sliders, 5 smoked wings and a Victory Pale Ale for $8.48 !! This is going to have to be a regular stop for me. He also has a TV so you can watch World Cup while you chow down on some of the best BBQ in the city. Very knowledgeable and friendly owner. Great BBQ at reasonable prices. I need to go back for happy hour and also the Brisket

We came here by suggestion from a coworker and definitely was not disappointed! We walked and checked the menus when the chef and came out and asked if we were BBQ fans and we said YES! So he said "Ok, I'll take care of you." He proceeded to create a sampler that didn't disappoint! We had 4 sauces to try and also had potato salad that tasted smoky, beans that were amazingly BBQed up, corn, coleslaw, and corn bread. Try it all. We did!! Mmmm we will definitely be back.

The Yelp 2 star saying is, "Meh. I've experienced better." I feel like that perfectly characterizes Atypical Man BBQ. This place has potential, but I feel they are far from being an elite BBQ stop in Louisville. Located on Saint Matthews Rd. in St. Matthews, KY (give that a second to set in), Atypical Man BBQ has a very limited parking area and just a handful of tables and chairs inside. My wife and I were the only guests in the establishment (about 1215 on a Thursday), and were promptly greeted and handed menus. I quickly decided on a 1/3 rack of St. Louis ribs with green beans (they were out of baked beans), and my wife went with a pulled pork sandwich served with a side of white truffle mac n' cheese. Then the day got difficult! Sauce choices...I wish they had the bottles set out so we could try each of them and perhaps combine them to please our own taste buds. But we had to choose at the counter. Since they weren't busy, we were able to try all four - Kansas City style, mustard based, Caribbean rum, and bourbon (we are in Kentucky, no?). The sauces were each great. It was a hard choice, but I went with KC, and my wife got the mustard based, which paired well with the pulled pork, she said. An employee pulled a full rack of ribs...from where I do not know. He said..."Oh, might need to warm these up," and headed for the oven. Uh...ok. Not the thing to do or say. I understand many restaurants use microwaves and ovens to warm food up...I just don't want to see it! Get something together to either 1. Keep the food warm, or 2. Put the oven in a place where I cannot see it or hear it. Bad move on their part. But, alas...I reserve judgement until the food meets my taste buds. The green beans were great...tasted fresh, felt fresh, and had pork in 'em. The ribs, however, were bland. Not a lot of flavor. I could taste some smoke and the rub, but there was no real marriage of flavors. BBQ needs three flavors - meat, smoke, and rub, and they need to work well together to make one good bite of meat heaven - Atypical Man BBQ just missed the mark here. My wife's pulled pork was good, with a moderate smoke flavor, but her portion lacked the best part - lots of good bark! The pork was not very juicy, but not too dry, either. In summary, Atypical Man BBQ has great sauces, and pretty dag gone good sides...they make both in house, but there are definitely better options in the area for good BBQ. Down the road, I may return and sample their other slow-smoked offerings...because I hear the brisket is good. But on this trip, they did not earn my vote and definitely started off behind the 8-ball when they warmed up my ribs.

Man! What can I say! The Carolina Sandwich was great and the black beans and rice were very flavorful. My wife got the St. Louis style ribs. Lots-O-meat and very tasty. The loaded potato salad was much liked by the both of us. The only thing...the sauces are not on the table. Other than that little "suggestion" for the owner, keep up the great work, we will be back!

I think 3 stars might be a bit low and 4 a bit high so lets say 3.5 but certainly moving in the right direction. I finally got a chance to head over to this establishment. Overall it basically took what was there and made it a bit more user friendly. I have a lunch plate with Brisket and pork, with a side of baked beans. First the "I-Likes" The owner was on site very friendly and willing to make any dish just the way you wanted it. Good customer service it does still exist. The freshness of the product. The selection of sauces was very good as well. And the pricing was pretty good for BBQ. The "I would like to see" Sauce on the table, its the norm anymore and for someone like me who believes that if the product is good then you don't need much sauce it is a waste of sauce to have someone serve me a side bowl of it. As well I like to experiment with pairings so it would be much better to have small on-table bottles. More pronounced hardwood smoke flavour. I don't want it to overpower but it still needs to be there, the pork had it the brisket not so much. (more on why in just a second) LET THE MEAT REST. I ordered the brisket and was informed he would have to go get it off the smoker. As I said I like the product fresh but with any large cut of meat it has to take some time to rest after cooking its just good science. By not doing this the brisket tended to be drier that it should have been since when it was cut the juices headed out. Trim you meats prior to cooking the fat cap on the brisket was very thick and that can be a good thing if you want extra moisture but in most cases it just blocks flavour from getting down to the meat. The cap on the flat end of the brisket had to be well over 1/2" which most folks will not eat anyway. This is why I think the smoke was not as pronounced. The beans were good and obviously home made but had a bit too much molasses or at least I think that was it so they were a little dry for my taste I think a bit more cooking liquid would have balanced the whole deal. Enough of my critique, This place has potential, there are some BBQ no-nos being committed but are easily fixed, service is good and friendly which is a good basis for any good restaurant. Keep working though the little bugs and this one should survive. Head on over and get you some BBQ from here its better than a feed store!

Looks a little iffy from out front but there are some tables in back. Not the place to impress with its looks but trust us, that is not why you are here. We experienced the baby back ribs (a large and very meaty rack) the chicken wings, and the "angry pig" sandwich. Everything was excellent and, I can honestly say I have never had a better pork sandwich ever! So close to the mall and yet I had never seen it before. You owe yourself a stop in here.

This man loves smoked meats, and you can tell by his product. That said, there is love in all that he sells - the baked beans are my favorites, ever. The napa cole slaw is also a favorite. The whole chicken dinner makes my Wednesday night, and that of my two pups as well... Work your way through the sauces, and hope along with me that his new tangy award winning sauce makes it into the menu permanently.

Fresh BBQ. Not dried-out. Had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and baked beans. Pork was very moist and topped off with a Kaiser roll from a local bakery. The sauce I chose was the Derby Bourbon sauce which was excellent. My only wish was the sauces were on the table instead of getting a small cup on the side. I like a lot of sauce on my Q plus I wanted to try the others. Atmosphere is average. It's not the same picnic/pig motif in all the other Q joints in town. They're obviously not finished with the decor which is bad considering the neighboring establishments and being in the heart of St. Matthews. But all in all, the quality of food out weighed the average decor. Good stuff, I'll be back.

Unfortunately, I had already paid for my meal, when we were told that the owner "don't make cornbread," and that the pre-packaged Sara Lee that was being heated up in the microwave cost him $40 a case. That should have been a sign. On the way back to the office with our to-go order, we contemplated where the rest of the food was manufactured. While the truffle Mac and cheese tasted pretty good, as did the simple black beans and rice, I have to wonder where the food actually originated. For a locally owned restaurant in Louisville (a city currently booming with a local-food and natural-goodness reputation), I expected much more. The ribs, while easy to come off the bone, were extremely mediocre. We'll be sticking with FABD and Smoketown from here on.

Unlike the restaurant that previously held this space (a pretty mediocre version of the same old BBQ), this BBQ is really good and, as the name suggests, they have little variations in their recipes to make their dishes more unique. I'd say that the differences just make the menu feel intentional. It just is nice to know they put some thought into giving you a reason to pick that BBQ place over others, and most importantly it's good food. First and foremost, the BBQ is legitimately good. I had the pulled pork both times I've been and it was juicy and tasty. I didn't try another meat my second time because I was looking forward to having the pork again. Could have had a little more on the sandwich, but the flavor is an A. While they meat itself is just a great version of typical pulled pork, the pulled pork is served on a toasted kaiser roll which I loved. For sides I've had the mac and cheese, the green beans and the cole slaw. *The cole slaw was solid, nothing too atypical there, but it did taste pretty fresh. *The mac and cheese is a truffle mac and cheese. The stuff is just dense with umami flavor. When I had it it may have been a touch heavy on the truffle oil, but I definitely wanted to have it again. *The green beans are slow cooked with pork. They were delicious. Surprisingly good texture despite being cooked for a while. Nice pork flavor but you still taste the beans. Even had a little bit of a nutty flavor. I had the classic KC style sauce, but his other options seemed unique. I did like the KC style. The restaurant itself is just kind of cafeteria style. But you weren't taking a date there. You want BBQ. And the BBQ is good and the sides are interesting.

Stopped in again. This time I had the ribs. Excellent flavor, very moist. I loved the seasoning. Also the mustard BBQ sauce is very addictive.

Stopped in to the spot the other day to check out a new restaurant and some BBQ and was pleasantly surprised with this spot...Cris does a great job mixing up the sauces, adding in a Kentucky Bourbon sauce that is unique and tasty, as well as a Kansas City sauce that is bold and flavorful The pork sandwich was great and is exactly what you'd want in a meal; hearty portion, tasty bun with a nice butter spread to give it it a little bite and a moist, delicious taste to the meat The baked beans were a different taste and very good...The potato salad had a rich and creamy taste to it and was fantastic also! If you're in the area, this start-up is a must try for all BBQ fans and a great place to add to your lunchtime choices!

A lot of great bbq places in Louisville, so I was a bit hesitant to go venturing out to a new spot - but I'm sure glad I did. My friend and I both really enjoyed our meals and the service was quick and friendly. My friend had been once before, and he enjoyed the pulled pork so much the first time that he ordered it again and said it was delicious. I really like the option of getting two sides with your entree and choice of their tasty sauces - I have to recommend the truffle mac and cheese and baked beans as sides, both were delicious (great cornbread too). Overall - definitely worth the trip - great food at a good price. I'll be back...

We made a special trip to try it out. We were there at 7pm. Door was open, but the people there rent out the kitchen. The bar-b-q was unavailable. Restaurant was closed. Not a good start.

This food is delicious. The restaurant set-up and atmosphere was a little bit "atypical" (pun intended). The building is very small and it appears that the owner is the only person working his establishment. You place your order with him at the counter, he prepares it, and brings it to you. This worked well during my visit because there was no one there when we placed our order. We received our food within 5 minutes of ordering. I'm not sure how this set-up would work if it got very busy. With only one man being the cashier/cook/server, I would imagine you might have to wait a long time. I ordered the brisket sandwich with truffle mac and cheese. OMG. The whole meal was to die for. I love brisket, and the meat had a nice smokey flavor, and there were the right amounts of char and fat on my sandwich. I devoured every bite. And let me tell you, get the truffle mac and cheese! It was fabulous. Typically, I find mac and cheese from most restaurants to be bland. This is the exact opposite. It had the perfect amount of truffle oil to give the side dish great flavor. My bestie had the pulled pork and truffle mac and cheese. She said she liked hers, but didn't seem as enthusiastic as me proclaiming "Omg this is so good" after every few bites. My only suggestion is that the sauce be bottled and available on the tables. Instead, he asks you what type of sauce you would like when you're ordering, and puts it on the side. He has four types of sauces, and he lets you know you can have as many as you'd like. Still, I imagine most people would feel hesitant asking for all four. I typically like to try all the flavors, and since they weren't busy, I requested three (still felt over-indulgent). My favorites were the Kansas City sauce and the Bourbon sauce. However, having the sauce on the tables seems like it would be more convenient for him (he has to pour each sauce in a ramekin), and the customer would feel more free to taste each flavor. Atypical Man Barbeque is added to my list of favorite BBQ in Louisville. My mouth is watering just thinking about the wonderful meal I devoured, and I'm mentally planning my next visit. That's why this place gets five stars.

Took the kids to this new (for us) restaurant in the area. We got the full rack of st louis ribs, half rack of baby back and the brisket. Cole slaw, red beans and rice, and the mac n cheese. The ribs were delicious. They were fall off the bone good. Not impressed with the sides we tried, but we will definitely be back for the ribs.
