The food here is generic Tex-Mex. Not bad for a Friday afternoon with some margaritas or brews, if you can get service. The problem with this location of OTB? The management, and therefore the service, is HORRIBLE. In my last 3 visits - 1) At about 8 pm on a Tuesday we sat at a table in the bar and watched about 15 minutes while all the dining room staff counted and discussed their tips for the night (about 15 feet away from where we were sitting). One of the waiters finally came over and asked us if we wanted to see a menu and when we said yes he rolled his eyes and turned around and walked away. No taking our drink order, no menus, no urgency, no customer service skills. We left. 2) Again, we sat at a table in the bar area. Food was decent for what it was. The bartender serving us was hustling his butt off, but was overwhelmed. He was getting zero help for the whole area, all the while the wait staff practicing their herding skills again like our last visit. 3) Thinking maybe the bar area was cursed, we checked in with the host to wait for a table in the dining room. Not one word from him as we left our name and settled in for the wait. As we waited, we saw about 5 dirty tables and 2 clean ones. Fifteen minutes later the situation with the tables was the same. Three more groups checked in, the fourth being a party of 2, just like ours. Ten minutes later, the lounging host/hostess duo finally were able to seat someone, the last party to show up. We left, finally deciding that there are places with food just as generic and better people skills. We found just down the road and had a decent meal and drinks there. My only conclusion is that the manager(s) of this OTB location is/are no good. There was never one visible and most of the staff were doing a completely unacceptable job. Standing around as if there was nothing to do (except for a few who were actually hustling). Interacting with customers as if the customer was ruining everything by being there. Walking past dirty tables on their way to a conversation with a co-worker. There was even a time I heard a customer ask to speak to a manager and was told 10 minutes later that they couldn't find one. Second thought, maybe this place has no mangers. I often have businesses tell me that I should speak to a manger in these types of situations. My response is that I shouldn't have to. With the stuff I saw during my 3 visits, why would I expect the manager to even attempt to handle it properly.

The hostess and her posse were not friendly ( and that is code for "rude.). She rolled her eyes, they set seven places at a table, then they walked into the back and left us standing at the door. We seated ourselves. Our waiter (long black braid) was fantastic! He was very funny and patient. I am just not a fan of the food here. The salsa is pretty good and has a nice little kick. Also, the chips are decent. I ordered the Baja which is a chicken/cheese stuffed haas avocado flash fried. Well, it might be good if the avocado weren't overripe to the point of being black in spots. The chicken enchilada was just ok. I left quite a bit of my meal which rarely happens. Would I return? Well, not much is open till 11 pm in Topeka, so if I have to, I will.

Was okay, not stellar. The waitress was good, the food average. The surroundings seemed a bit grimy - food on the wall and in the cracks of the booths, and that's probably most of my issue. I know it's hard for a restaurant (or any public place) to keep clean, but it is a battle that can be won with repeated training. No one wants to see food crumbs on the wall from someone else's toddler when they're eating. It makes one wonder how the back of the house looks and is maintained if this is what the public sees.

Other than salsa they don't have any other dip with chips and waitress was not clear how many sides will be there for a meal course and food has lot of cheese than you expect and their soup also contains cheese which makes you disappointed and difficult to eat... our group mentioned for water without ice and she has brought with ice

First time here at a friend's suggestion. Had bad luck at the franchise in other state but were willing to try it. Wait staff was new, but we got through it. Chips & salsa were very good. Had to ask for refills. Fish tacos (XX) were amazing! Loved it. Will be back for that dish again. Unfortunately, the booth was not comfortable. Tables and chairs were crowded together.

Lately my wife and i have been going to on the border a little more often than we used to, since we learned about their taco tuesday specials. I have been typically ordering the grilled fish tacos and they are actually much better than what would have expected. My wife, being vegetarian, orders black bean tacos, which surprisingly quite a few places wont serve her because of the substitution of beef for beans. However, on the border has always been good about doing so, and they charge her only $2 per taco, which is the price of their cheapest tacos on the special menu. So, overall, pretty cheap tacos and good service usually.

Save your money and go to Taco Bell, the food there is better. Also had to refill my own water.

I've been here a couple of times and have got used to the consistent bad service that comes along with great Fajitas. The last time i went there was a group of about 20 people that were waiting to be seated and of-course there was nobody available to attend to anyone else so it took almost 20 minutes of waiting before someone bothered to walk me over to a booth. There is a stern looking server who does not smile and has a perpetually jaded look plastered on his face - who i got stuck with multiple times, so a complete fail on the service front. Stay away from the peach ice tea which has absolutely no flavor and forget about refills (I'm not sure if they don't offer this as a policy or this was special treatment reserved for me). This is one of the dirtiest restaurants that i have seen a long time. Its got small food particles strewn across the floor which looks like it has not been swept properly in a long time. The floor directly below the tables has a layer of grease and you can feel your shoes stick when you try to move around. My opinion is that the entire restaurant needs a good scrubbing. But damn their Fajitas are good and as i am in it for the food i am willing to overlook their long list of shortcomings and repeat again.

On what border im not sure . Visited this business at the dinner hour and they were swamped but got a table in 5 min..Our server was right with us. We order our drinks got them right away ,great service . Ordered the all you can eat tacos the server informed us you have to start with 3 tacos. We ordered1 soft shell chicken and 2 hard shells 1 beef and1 pork, they came to us fast maybe to fast. The hard shells were like rubber tires, you could not eat them. The beans were good .the ground beef filling was so salty with too much grease and no flavor. To me someone needs to visit some of the border towns and eat real border foods then you could truly call yourself On The Border. Not impressed. On a scale of 1 to 10 for Mexican restaurants in Topeka I would put this on the scale at 1 because just a little ways down the street is Jose Peppers 10 times better and priced comfortably. I was really disappointed in choosing On The Border.

Love, love, love their fish tacos. Their chips are crisp and not greasy or stale like some other Mexican restaurants. Also had great service when I visit, day or night.

I used to be a big fan of On The Border when I was working in New Jersey, but the few times that I have come to this location I have been a little disappointed. With this being a chain restaurant, the food was good and is fairly consistent with the other locations. But the one thing that stood out as being sub par are the free chips that they give you. Each time I come here, the chips seem to be over-cooked and not light and crispy like I am expecting. Other than the chips, the service is good and the portions are a little on the large size. Overall a good deal for the money.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
