I made the mistake of spending ten dollars in the "lounge" area at this place... I'll explain why. :) My fiance and I went here casually dressed (I believe this may have been what got us on the bad service route..) on night where it was NOT busy but had to wait in the lounge area for a minimum of 15 minutes. We were only recognized as getting annoyed when my fiance asked the host why we were waiting in the lounge when we were surrounded by empty tables. So we were finally seated in a booth (they should really measure the space that they're giving their guests - We aren't obese people and we had to manually move the table to get to either side of the booth) and waited another 15 minutes for our waitress to start our order. We had plenty of time to look at the menu and weren't so excited about the only sides to choose from being potatoes. Hasbrowns, mashed potatoes, or fries. Since we were going to get an entree that was for two, we were hoping for more variation, perhaps some veggies or substitute one of the few appetizers listed. "Can't do that" is what we were told - But we could get veggie for an additional $3.49. Wha? At that point I was tired of the poor service (I didn't even tell you guys about the terrible bartender at the lounge, but I'll spare you today) and just wanted to leave. She basically refused to figure out what we owed for the two warm beers that we had gotten at the lounge so we left the booth to hunt down the bartender. In hindsight, we probably shouldn't have even done that because he was annoyed with figuring up that we owed $8.00 (!!!!) for two beers. I also shouldn't have tipped him for that but old habits die hard.

Stopped in here for dinner on our way from Georgia to Colorado. SO glad we did because their steaks are amazing! Slightly hard to find but don't give up looking or you'll miss out! They get busy quick around 5:30 pm ... plan accordingly....

We went here for the first time. It was highly recommended. We went for a birthday dinner on a Saturday, the free steak is not what ever steak you order, you get 14.99 off of your dinner (the cost of the house steak). It wasn't explained so I asked after receiving bill .... Yeah well I felt like an idiot We were looking forward to a porterhouse. We asked the waitress, but she said they were out. So we ordered T-bones. Very yummy. The service was slow and not super friendly. But the steaks were worth it. We found out from the bus boy that Friday's are the day to go if you want the porterhouse. He provided more information and good service than the waitress. We will be back. Good food

You'll need to make a reservation. Great steaks, we had great service and the old time atmosphere made for a memorable time.

Try the 16oz Rib-Eye probably one of the best cuts I've ever tried. This place has great friendly service, amazing food, and the old school feel to it makes it very genuine.

We got there with a party of 5. The decor is a late 70s or early 80s lounge only works if this was a mob bar in NYC (which it is not). We ordered mushrooms and fries and gravy for appetizer. The mushrooms were cooked well. The fries tasted like they were overcooked and in old grease. The gravy with the fries was burnt and greasy, sent it back. When my $26 steak came it was bland and tasted like it was cooked on a grill that was too hot. I complained to the waitress and was told only not good huh. I did not eat more then 3 bites. My daughters chicken fingers were good and moist. I had trouble getting the waitress attention. She sent the dishwasher over to give us boxes. The check came with nothing taken off.

Sadly, never got to eat here. We stopped in and were told, rudely, that they had an outrageously long wait for a table despite a half-empty dining room and an empty lounge. It led me to believe that they either didn't care about serving us OR they were trying to build up the illusion of high demand. Either way, we were unimpressed. We moved on.

This place is well off the beaten path and a little difficult to find, but well worth the adventure outside of Topeka proper. The ribeye, hashbrowns and gravy(!!) were amazing. Unexpected but fantastic beer selection as well. Super sweet staff to help us out with directions and were accommodating of our late arrival.

Went here for dinner tonight while on a business trip with a co-worker. We both ordered Ribeye, he got a baked potato for side and I ordered the hash browns with gravy. First of all the place is actually very cool, I love the ambiance, very old-school, old tables/chairs, old everything. I'm serious, I really liked it as it has a true old-school hometown feeling to it. Ordered a nice locally brewed beer we both enjoyed. Salad came out very promptly and was pretty good. Not great but not bad, a little too much middle of the road dressing but still pretty OK. Steaks came out and eh Ribeye was fatty and my co-worker joked, this must be a Walmart Ribeye. The taste was maybe a 5 out of 10 just not a very good steak. His potato was pretty good and came with a good number of things to melt and stuff in to it. My hash browns were really not what you think of as hash browns but potatoes (OK I know, that's what hash browns are) but I was thinking the typical hash brown but no big deal. They were very bland and the brown gravy too was a bit bland. Service was outstanding, the entire crew was very nice and attentive to us and all the folks in the place. Again, as stated before I liked the atmosphere a lot. This is down 'n dirty (not actually dirty) good and greasy (yes it's greasy) not much taste but where the locals hang out. I'd go back but would prefer to find another steak place in Topeka first. I'm guessing the place hasn't changed much since at least the mid 60's.

My family took a party of ten here on a Friday night in November. The restaurant was completely empty, with the exception of 2 people. When we showed up, we had to wait for 20 minutes to get a table zzz IN AN EMPTY RESTAURANT!! Once the food came (An hour later), I wanted to puke. The steak had fat out the yin yang, and was really bad tasting. I wouldn't recommend this hell hole to my worst enemy!

North Star is an old-school steakhouse tucked away off of 24W in North Topeka. Being a fan of these sorts of establishments in general, my husband and I drove out from Lawrence to give it a try. We were not disappointed. It took us a few tries to find the place as it's set back from the frontage road, nestled in a copse of thick trees. Pulling up to the small parking lot, we found a windowless whitewashed building, brightly lit with a large metal star on the front. As far as country steakhouses go, this was promising. Be advised that the area you walk into is the lounge and not the dining room. My husband was surprised when we were quoted a wait time despite the empty lounge. The dining room is actually through a small door behind the host's podium. No worries though, we posted up at the bar and ordered a couple of seasonal Sam Adams drafts. The bartender was friendly and the game was on, so we didn't mind waiting for a few minutes while the dining room turned over. Upon being ushered into the dining room, we saw what we'd been missing in the lounge. The high-backed booths are a bit of squeeze to climb into at first, but private and charming with their old (unfortunately no longer working) wall jukeboxes. Our waitress, in a pressed white blouse and black bowtie, promptly introduced herself and the menu. We started with fried mushrooms which can be ordered with either a peppery brown gravy or ranch dressing. They were exactly what you want for steakhouse fried mushrooms - breaded canned mushrooms, hot and delicious. The Mr then ordered a ribeye and I decided to take on the sirloin. Steaks come with a side salad which is exactly what you'd expect - iceberg lettuce, some shredded cabbage, croutons and a hunk of cucumber or two. For a side, you choose one of three styles of potato - fries, hashbrowns, or a whole baked potato. Mr went with the fries and added brown gravy. I ordered the baked potato, fully loaded. The accouterments are extra but so worth it. Our steaks, ordered medium rare, were perfectly cooked and delectable. You can taste that they age their steaks for longer than average, 45 days, I believe. The potatoes were an appropriate accompaniment for the juicy beef and we were in steakhouse heaven. Our waitress was attentive but not overbearing. The food was exactly what we'd hoped for and rightly priced. The ambiance was perfect - dark, lots of wood and smelling of decades of steak. We went home happy, well fed, and looking forward to our return visit.

Best steak I have ever had. We shared the steak for 2 and it was amazing - perfectly aged and cooked. Total retro supperclub vibe. This place was a speakeasy years ago and has tons of history. Lovely and attentive staff - they know their stuff here. It was my first time here and it won't be my last. Highly recommended and absolutely top notch. I'd recommend a reservation - it was packed on a Saturday night with a 30-40 minute wait.

Absolutely delicious! Love the "old style" decor. super friendly staff. A person in our party had the Grilled Cajun chicken salad which was amazing!! The other 6 of our party all had different steaks ranging from medium rare to well done. Each one was cooked perfectly. Will be back again.. And soon!!

Holy crap was this a good steak! You can tell it is aged by the woody flavor and the way it breaks apart! Well worth it!

Walked in and it took forever to be seated in the dining area when really it wasn't that busy. It was cold everywhere in that place. There was a draft in our booth. I thought the steak would be amazing. ... nope. Not at all. Nothing here was good. All the hype for nothing.

The arrogant general manager lost our business tonite after fifty years of patronage. And I'm pretty sure they could care less.

We've known about North Star for a while - a Topeka landmark. Birthday Boy decided it was time to check it out and take advantage of their Birthday deal of a $14.99 credit towards the birthday entree. We were surprised to have a wait on a Tuesday night. We felt the person acting as the host was a bit abrupt and not very pleasant. After seeing table after table leave, we were finally seated. The lighting above the booths is a bit harsh but the booth was roomy. We had a very attentive and pleasant server. Hubby got the rib eye and I got the catfish fillet. Hubby loved the steak fries. My baked (or rather steamed in foil) potato had been cooked much, much earlier in the day. The awesome side toppings to load it (extra charge) made up for the yellow spud. A bit pricey for the food unless you are going on your special day. Will be added to the Topeka local list when in the mood for a retro vibe.

Was recommended to me, so I decided to give it a try. They quoted me a 45 minute wait time so I went to the bar and ordered Onion Rings, which weren't bad, but were probably frozen not too long before they arrived. The wait was only 10-15 minutes. I ordered the Ribeye, it came with salad and choice of potato, I got the fries and gravy since they were recommended as well. The salad was out of a bag and I would be surprised if they rinsed it before putting it in a bowl and putting dressing on it. I added cheese which the menu said was 50 cents, it was less than 1/4 cup and they charged $1. The whole bag they got the cheese from only cost them $2 I'm sure. They bring a lot of fries, and that potato is probably the freshest thing they serve. They were good, I didn't care for the gravy. The steak was cooked perfect, but it was very tough. I don't think I will be back.

Growing up in Topeka, North star was the crown jewel of steakhouses. Somehow they still believe that they are something that they really are not. My fiance and I visited North Star on a Saturday evening with hopes that it would be as great as our normal weekend spot, the Blind Tiger. It was my suggestion to visit Blind Tiger's subsidiary. Keep in mind we were dressed casually, jeans and a t shirt kind of attire; this was proven to be quite the mistake on our behalf. We entered the half empty restaurant at seven o'clock and we're told that there would be a wait. We decided to wait at the bar where we had to wait on the bartender to finish scooping out Dillons' cheapest ice cream for someone's dessert. After waiting five minutes the beer ordering process was brutal. He knew enough about beers to tell us what each beer wasn't, but was unable to recommend a good beer let alone pour a taster into a glass that wasn't hot and out of the sink. After forcing a warm beer down and waiting for my name to be called for at least thirty minutes, I was pretty perturbed. When the host noticed our on setting disdain, he was conveniently able to seat us. We got to our table and had to literally move the table to sit on the benches provided. Mind you, we are nowhere near obese people. Our waitress briefly acknowledged or presence two times but we still waited ten minutes for her to actually discuss what we were wanting to order. At this point I was at my wits end. We were wanting to get the steak dinner for two, which included two sides but the side options consisted of only potatoes. I asked the waitress if we could substitute one of the appetizers for the potatoes and was told without hesitation, NO. That was enough for my fiance to request our tab for the beers we had choked down so we could find another place to eat at. The waitress told us she didn't know what beers we had gotten so we should probably go back to the bar to get it. Obviously we will never return, nor will we ever suggest this place to anyone.

Excellent meal and service every time! Best steak in Topeka. Make reservations ahead of time to ensure a short wait.

Steaks are great, especially the filet. Looks like a dive from the outside but well worth it. Try something different and get the hash browns as a side - they were diced but crispy and had the perfect amount of onions in them.
