Best Chinese Food in Topeka! Hands down! This restaurant is family owned. They prepare traditional Chinese dishes upon request. If you are looking for authentic Chinese food, look no further! Simply ask for them to prepare it as they do at home. My personal favorite is the crispy chicken. It takes 24 hours to prepare. Order 1 day in advance. Great for dine-in events! You will not be sorry! I promise!

Seven people ate here tonight and not one of us was happy with the taste. First time I've ever been to a Chinese joint where nobody wanted to take their leftovers home. The Pad Thai had a decidedly "picklish" aftertaste (3 people agreed). The Generals Tso's chicken was just OK. Again, weird aftertaste. Chow Mein was OK. Really, aside from the Pu Pu Platters, there's not much to recommend this place. Service was slow enough to grow a beard.

After moving to town, I started picking up the same entree from different Chinese places to figure out the best. (I'm still on my quest) The restaurant interior had an "old" feeling to it with a bit of oily layer on everything. Food was OK. I probably won't be back.

I don't like to give a poor review but I ordered To-Go, was told it would be 20 minutes, showed up 30 minutes to be asked in sort of a rude way what I was there for. I was polite but then waited another 20 minutes on my food with no apology or a "it's coming up." from the woman at the desk/checkout area. I'm not a sensitive person but it was just rude. And honestly when I got the food home, my family mentioned it was far from the Chinese we've had in the past. Overall, not a good experience.

Maybe Topeka really has a shortage of Chinese restaurants, but this place was mediocre at best. We stopped here for lunch on day two of our cross country trip. We chose this restaurant because it was the only place open on a Sunday afternoon with more than 4 stars. But we were rather unimpressed. The crab rangoon was good, the eggrolls so so, the wonton soup good, and the hot and sour just ok. But the entrees were the big disappointment. She had kung pao chicken and I had spicy and tangy chicken. Neither was very flavorful, and I had a hard time detecting any spice in my dish. All of this could be forgiven, but the real disappointment was that the chicken was on it's way out. Some bites were okay, but others made it obvious that we were not being fed fresh meat. And that just isn't cool. For the record, we did order our dishes without MSG, but if that was the reason for the way our food tasted (aside from the spoiling chicken), then I worry about how much they usually include.

I ordered delivery from here one evening when I went to visit my wife at work on 29th and Wanamaker. We ordered what we always do, an order of vegetable lo-mein and an order of sesame chicken, and an order of egg rolls. The egg rolls were pretty decent, so I had higher hopes that the rest of the meal would trend in that direction. I was mistaken. The lo-mein was weirdly oily, with an odd "old" taste and very few vegetables...the ones that were in there were soggy and not too fresh. The worst part of the meal was undeniably the sesame chicken! The "chicken" was more like what all too many chinese restaurants serve...not so much chicken...but more of not-chicken, for lack of a better term. No one really knows what this suspect meat is! But its sure NOT chicken! The breading around the not-chicken was puffy and weird. Sort of overly thick beer battered style, and not attached to the not-chicken at all! The meat was just incapsulated by this soggy, puffy, bread material. Not to mention the oily, runny sesame sauce poured over the top. It was really watery and thin and did not cover the breaded meat at all, it just ran off and sat at the bottom of the to-go box. It looked as if the breaded meat had not been "tossed" or covered in the sauce at all. It seemed as if the strange sauce had just been dumped on top as an after thought. I do not feel that I will be returning.

After reading several reviews on here, I decided to give Hunam a try. While I thought that the staff was welcoming and friendly, the food was just mediocre. Ex. The Mongolian beef was a bit too sweet and not spicy at all. The meat was rubbery and tasted a bit suspect. Hopefully, this is not the best that Topeka has to offer For your health!

Tried the "seafood delight" here ... Shrimp were large, plentiful and not over-cooked; scallops were large and cooked just enough; the "crab meat" ... welll, you know, two out of three and such. The shrimp and scallops were the freshest I've gotten at a restaurant, and the veggies were equally good. This came in a light white wine sauce that was just a little toward sweet, with a base of either chicken or vegetable stock. Generous portions, well-presented, it was just what I had hoped. All this in a very nicely-appointed dining room. This truly is a "sleeper" restaurant that you should check out. It sits in a strip center just east of 29th and Fairlawn, south side ... along with such notables as Big Lots and a dollar store (I know!), and also my favorite hardware store, WestLake ... but I'd never taken notice of Hunam or ventured in. You should follow my lead -- this was a real pleasant surprise. Anything missing? Okay, maybe a little glass of blanc would have been nice, but the iced tea was fresh and tasty, too.

Some absolutely delicious food: appetizers, entrees, and sauces. It's a family place in all the best senses of things, come in a second time and you're family! Because it is a family place, they're a little shorthanded sometimes, so make sure you're not in too much of a hurry for dinner. A truly hidden gem of Topeka.

Hunam is a pleasant escape from Topeka's culinary desert. The Cantonese owners provide pleasant, fresh, though bland renditions of American Chinese standards. Crispy duck wasn't crispy, but it was succulent. Steamed dumplings were unfortunately tasteless and the accompanying sauce didn't provide the needed lift. Stir-fried broccoli with garlic was delicious and perfectly "al dente." Atmosphere was fun with ornate old-fashioned Cantonese decorations (wall sconces with red tassels, etc). Friendly service, reasonable price. Probably two stars in any city with a sizeable Chinese population, but Hunam ranks 4 stars in Topeka's restricted choice environment. Escape that corporate chains that dominate Topeka and try this place!

Make that two votes for "best Chinese in Topeka." Our family has been eating at Hunan since our grown kids were small children .... well over twenty-five years. I've eaten in three of the best Chinatowns in N America - NYC, Seattle and Vancouver BC (somehow I've missed Frisco) - and Hunan is as good as I've found in Kansas and the KC area. The owner/hostess (ashamed that I've never learned her name) always comes to the table and asks about the kids. Our standby favorites include Bok Choy & Black Mushrooms, Lake Tung Ting Shrimp, Chow Fun Singapore Style, Boneless Duck, all of the vegetarian dishes, the soups (usually Hot & Sour or Sizzling Rice), and the steamed dumplings. We've never had a bad meal and we never leave hungry!

This is the best chinese restaurant in Topeka, bar none. I've eaten at them all, and this is the best one by far. I eat here once a month and it's always excellent, fresh, homemade chinese food. You will love it.

Driving through town and found this wonderful place. Great food and service, we were treated like family. Don't miss it!

We always feel welcome here. Especially once you become "family". More details to come, but i felt the need to counter the other review!

Food is as good as great Hong Kong restaurants, with much better service. It is a bit slow since they cook everything from scratch for you.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
