This is an ok place if you want to have a sit down lunch. The food is your typical Mexican American food, although the cheese sauce was very good. It's pricier than other Mexican places in town.

The is a must when coming back to Topeka. I love the house fajitas. Especial Mezcal fajitas. Steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo with onions, peppers and tomatoes. The only downfall is that this isn't the cleanest of restaurants. Little nervous to see what the kitchen looks like compared to the rest of the restaurant. Also odd is that I've never seen a female employee. Just the men who like to all sit at the front and stare quietly at every customer that walks in. So if you can get over the lack of cleanness and awkward moment walking in you will experience some awesome Mexican food.

This is a very popular restaurant for dinner after work. They have 99 cent margaritas which are like a margarita slush. Not much liquor, but a lot of ice. I think you could drink these all night and just have too much sugar, but probably very little alcohol. I arrived at 4:30 pm for an early dinner. By the time I left at 6:30 pm, there were people waiting to be seated. This is a large restaurant, but the popularity of it means that you might have to wait a bit for seating if you arrive around 6:30 pm during the week. Complimentary chips and salsa were brought to the table. The tortilla chips are thick, but warm and crispy with just the right amount of salt. The salsa was so-so. It was too tomato pasty. It didn't taste freshly made to me, more like out of a jar. I ordered Chili Colorado which was good, a large portion served with warm flour tortillas. This is a favorite dish for me at Mexican restaurants, and I can honestly say that I have had better in other Mexican restaurants in Topeka. My friends ordered Fajita Quesadilla which was served in a large flour tortilla. I think I'll order that next time I'm there. The refried beans and mexican rice were OK. The best part of this restaurant is the wait staff. They are prompt, friendly, deliver the food hot to the table, refill chips with fresh warm chips and salsa frequently. We were slow to order and slow to the leave the table while chatting. Our waiter checked on us frequently, but never made us feel like we had to give up our table. The man at the check-out register was not so friendly, but maybe he felt the pressure of people waiting to be seated.

5 stars for the beef burrito. Smother it, your rice, and your beans with queso. Then ask for the spicy salsa, mix it all together and enjoy! Otherwise place is decent, little old, but hey, I come for the burrito. If you come for lunch it takes a while to pay since everyone are using cards.

Had lunch at el mezcal and tried the burrito. The food was good and portion adequate and reasonably priced. The food, however, is similar to just about every other Mexican restaurant in town - so I cannot say that this place stands out. Cleanliness and reducing the number of flies buzzing around would be things to work on.

In the name of Silky Johnson. What's to say about this restaurant that's not already been said about Afghanistan. It's bombed out and depleted. Quite frankly, there is nothing special about this place. I had a taco salad that would have been more authentic had I made it myself out of the Dillon's hispanic food section. The salsa tastes like canned tomato paste with chopped up jalapeños and onions and the chips are below standard. They charged us $5 for what is normally their $.99 margaritas that actually made me feel more sober after I drank it, and I'd yet to drink anything that day. Oh, those high dollar drinks are premade in big buckets. I know this because I saw them pushing the cart around. This would ALMOST be worth it if the service was outstanding, but the service staff couldn't seem any more annoyed by our presence. There is a sign outside that says it's newly renovated. This is frightening, as it looks terrible inside it after. If you are looking for a place to bring a date you never want to see again, friends you hate, or your in laws this place is an A+++ and highly recommended. Otherwise, drive on.

Came to Topeka on an unplanned trip, and decided to grab a bite to eat here on the way back home. The parking lot was busy and we saw they had outdoor seating (it's a beautiful KS night) so thought we'd try it. We got seated right away and got drinks and chips. Then at least 15 minutes passed until our server came back to take our order. This was after we had to ask for him. His first words on returning to our table weren't "I'm sorry for your wait" but a snotty, "I had other tables inside." I was ready to leave then but my husband wanted to stay. I don't need to wait forever on you and can eat elsewhere. We ordered and asked for extra plates for our small children. The food came out very quickly and was good - but we had to go inside after an extra plate and silverware for my son, after we asked again and waited for one that never came. When it was time to pay my husband asked if we paid him or up front at the register. The guy said, "either one, I don't care," and walked away. RUDE. The inside of the restaurant was dirty and didn't smell very clean. I took my child to the bathroom and the tile floor was soaked in water - very dirty and unsafe. I told the host the bathroom floor was wet and dangerous and he said "yes". That's helpful. Hoping no one falls and hurts themselves in that nasty place. If you work in a restaurant where the majority of your clientele speak English, you would think at least being able to understand English would be a requirement for your staff. We had interactions with two or three people who didn't seem to understand what we were asking or saying (or pretended not to) and just nodded and walked away. I don't understand how that would be good for your business. I would find another Mexican restaurant to try if you're in the downtown Topeka area.

Met a couple of consultants there to treat for lunch. Everyone, including myself, we're pleased with their order, staff and environment. Great find and hope to visit again in the future

This was not an experience I want to go through again. Meat was burnt. Salsa is like tomato sauce with a little salt. I don't know what people see in it. Maybe because it is so cheap, but you so get what you pay for.

Decent food. Reasonable price nothing to write home about. I had the chicken soft tacos

It's very mediocre "authentic" mexican food. The table salsa has the consistency of water. Not a good sign.

Great place to eat! Cheap Margaritas! Good Chips and Salsas! Usually end up getting this pan fried skillet with different types of meat and veggies where you make your own burrito. Can't remember the name of it but it feeds 2, but I usually end up eating it by myself!

Well, service is a bit hit or miss but this is the best mexican food you can get for the price. When my folks are craving margaritas and mexi food, this is their exclusive spot.

Bland, and the "salsa" was more like ketchup. Chips were crisp and not too greasy. It was just okay.

This is yet another family favorite. They have great mexican. Fajitas rock and margaritas are cheap on certain nights(Mon and Thurs) My only complaint would be with service. One of the waiters, (tall with shaved head or short hair) is great and always takes good care of us. The other guy we get there shorter with mustache is a jackass and always seems to think we should be happy that he forgot to place half our order.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
