Here's an example of something iconic which has changed hands and the new owners did not screw anything important up. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! What do I love about the North Star? It is not prententious, it does not try to be anything that it is not, the food is what one goes to the North Star for (Steak- being that food.) The North Star sits along a little stretch of old road across from a biker bar....if you did not already know it was there you might never discover it. Chances are you know about the North Star because someone wise who might have been around the block and seen a thing or two told you about it! You can count on the steaks at the North Star being as perfectly seasoned, juicy & accurately prepared-to-order as the time visted the North Star last month, or last year or five years ago etc. Here's something I normally dislike - french fries. When your "waiter" or "waitress" (yes we still call them that here in the Midwest, and no one seems to be insulted that we do not say "wait-person") asks you what sort of potato you would like...tell him/her you would like the french fries with gravy, please. I guess the best way to get to the "meat" of this review is just to tell you what I usually order when I go to the North Star and what I think of it. Oh, before I forget- you will get a salad....everyone gets a salad....they make two of their dressings in house. I choose the blue cheese. What arrives is a small bowl of iceburg lettuce, a cucumber slice or two, a few croutons, and it is coated in yummy dressing...it's a salad....you came there for a steak...eat the cute little salad as "something to do" while you wait for your food. As for the steak, I order the 16 oz Ribeye, medium rare. For the potato, as I said....I order the french fries and gravy. What arrives? A wooden charger and a hot metal platter...atop that- a fork tender, perfect steak- 16 oz's of delightful steaky heaven. Oh yes, and a platter of HOT fries, and a bowl of gravy. The fries are hand-cut, and as I said- HOT....give them a minute to cool. The gravy is not "white" gravy (although that stuff can be awesome too) this gravy was made with a nicely browned roux, and milk was added slowly....and this gravy was seasoned with the right amount of salt, and it's thick and peppery, it was simmered a bit....and it is sooooo good it makes you EAT ALL THOSE FRIES! The North Star offers more than steak on their menu- I have overheard other patrons order stuff like- Pork Chops, Chicken etc....I cannot tell you about those items. I am sure they are delicious. Your 16 oz steak, potato with gravy, salad, and beverage is going to cost all together maybe 23 bucks. The ambiance, you will not remember...it does not matter. You came for the food, and you got better food than you paid for. If there are any negatives I could mention they are barely worth the cyber paper they are written on, but here goes- we sat next to the wait station and the wait staff were kind of loud. I overheard the wait staff talk about every patron (but none in a bad way) and many aspects of their personal lives....I really did not want to hear this stuff. So, wait staff....here's a suggestion- "Shhhhhhhhh 'maintain low-tones.'"

North Star is very much out of the way. If you aren't looking for it specifically, you'll never find it. I was just here for the first time in years and it was worth visiting. Their menu item is nothing like Blind Tiger though. The menu is steakhouse items: steaks, chicken fried steaks, chicken, and a few fish items. With your meal, you get a side salad and either fries, potato, or has browns. If you get the fries, they're served with gravy. In my case, I got the chicken fried steak. The chicken fried steak is served with gravy on the side instead on it, so at least you can decide how much you get. A person with me ordered a steak and he liked it a lot. The service is good for the type of steakhouse this is. No complaints there. Seating is extremely uncomfortable. Booths are tall and go straight up. Might be worth bringing a pillow if you have issues with sitting in annoying surroundings. Finally, to get here, use the road in front of Dillons and take a turn like you're going to YCAT. Its just past the bar on the north side of the street. There's also a little road from the southwest end of the parking lot which will take you there too. Overall, a nice little steakhouse. I'd call it the best steakhouse on the north side of town, except there aren't any others. If it had a more visible location, they would be doing much better business.

The food is really good but wasn't impressed with the service/atmosphere. First it is pretty dark in there so you can really tell if your steak is cooked properly, unless you know by touch. Secondly we sat right in front of the food service window and watched that our food sat there for about 10 minutes before being served to us so the food wasn't hot when it came to us. Now the steaks are really good!!! You order a steak and you get a side salad and a side item, which is some sort of potato (either baked, fries or hash browns). They come with brown gravy on the side. The hash browns come with onions in them. If you go there on your birthday, they will pay for $13.99 of your meal but have to bring another adult to purchase a meal. They are closed Sunday and Monday so if your birthday falls on one of those days you come the following day. Trying to remember off the top of my head some things off the menu: Sirloin - $15 KC Strip - $23 Chicken Fried Steak - $12 2 one pound sirloin deal - $32 The menu is pretty much steak! They have a kids menu. Use to be a speakeasy and has an interesting story on their menu and walls.

Is this really the first review for this place... or is it called something else? My first experience here (and I have been back many times since) sums up the place. Think David Lynch meets Stuart Anderson... in a speakeasy. We were first told about this place at a hotel downtown... but the person did not know where it was. Heard of it. Said it was owned by Blind Tiger. Now I have been to Blind Tiger a number of times and never really was impressed. Sort of a local TGIFridays.. or an upscale Applebees. Not bad. Not great. We drove to Blind Tiger to ask the girl at the front where this North Star was located. She did not know. Finally a bar tender gave us an address. We were wondering why nobody knew about this place. It is located in North Topeka... and frankly, I have never gone over the river. But there we went. And promptly got lost. This was pre-GPS days. We had some written directions.. but they seemed wrong. Some turn near a prison? What? Seems like a small backroad heading into a dark area? And there we traveled... and this small white windowless building... small lightbulb in the dirt/gravel parking lot. One small door with a little star on it. Oh... that must be the place! Or where some serial murderer lives but sells used cars on the side. Really looked more creepy than anything. So we entered... now I am not one to wear purple, or Birkenstocks, or look really out of the ordinary in way that screams "OUTSIDER".. but to my surprise... you enter into a bar area.. and people were inside chatting it up... and they all stopped when we entered. Wow.. just like in some movie. I half expected some guy at the bar to slowly swing around on the bar stool, spit on the ground and say "you ain't from around here... are you?" But instead a server lady came up and asked us if we wanted dinner. The dining area is a step down to the right and there were cute and rustic booths lining the room...tables in the middle. We were seated in a booth and menus given to us. On the menu was printed the history of the North Star. Seems it is based on a real speakeasy from the 30s. We ordered two steaks and a side of fries. To our surprise, the fries came with gravy on them. GRAVY ON THEM. Holy crap it was good. I mean... not good for you... but yummy good. The steaks were amazingly good too. Good beer choices. Service was good. What is not to like? I have come back here a number of times since that first visit... and must admit I might have been a little freaked out the first time. It did not look so creepy on subsequent visits.. but the steak and fries were still just like I remembered them. If you have not tried it, do so.

The North Star has always been a favorite of my family. Although the place was much better before the owner of the Blind Tiger took it over it still is a twice a year type of place to go to. It's a busy place with not much seating so it's a ht or miss for getting a table, especially on the weekends. The steaks are fried on a flat top not over an open flame. This is an assumption but they taste fried. I've always received a great cut of meat whether it be ribeye or sirloin. Great place an intimate dinner or family outing. Service = decent, nothing special Cleanliness = not the best, the place could use a great cleaning, I'm sure the kitchen could really use it judging by what the customers can see through the window Food = good steaks but everything else seems to be fried. Not a lot of healthy options. The salads are the most boring thing they have. Price = about right. Little pricey but the prices keep out the riff raft. Like I said, probably a twice a year visitation from me.
