WOW!!! I ran in last min to grab a snack. I couldn't make up my mind so I ordered their famous torta (heaven in my mouth!) I had never had one before and am glad that I told her "yes with everything" It had steak, beans, cheese, tomato and avocado (both of which I would have said no thanks to if I spoke Spanish, luckily I don't!) it was an amazing burst of flavor that I have to go back for tonight! I also had a taco with it, also scrumptious!

Amazing tacos. Aside from the traditional tacos such as streak, pork, etc. they also have tripes and other "parts". Family owned, love this place. tip. Go on Tuesdays for dollar tacos.

Authentic tacos, yes! Delicious tamales, yes! $1 tacos on Tuesdays, hell yes! I feel it necessary to stress when a Mexican place is authentic so as not to surprise the doe-eyed Johnson county types who are used to their plate of melted cheese. This is a small place. Wide range of homemade flavored drinks. Excellent horchata. Wide range of frozen delights. Great for lunch or an easy dinner. Very affordable.

My barbaqoa torta was OK. A little smaller than I am used to - and where the heck was the cheese? But it was good enough to stave off the cravings till I get back to Denver.

If you're looking for authentic Mexican fare, look no further than Mi Chihuahua. Located in a strip mall, off 77th and Quivera, Mi Chihuahua's menu is a compilation of street food and paletas. The staff speak very little English and the menu is in Spanish - just a heads up. Taco Tuesday is one of the best days to go. Enjoy a variety of street tacos for $1. So far I've had the chicken, steak, barbacoa and carnitas tacos - all were amazing. They double up the soft corn tortillas on each taco because it's holding in massive amounts of seasoned meat, cabbage, cilantro, and onions. If you're not utilizing the lime wedges you aren't getting the full flavor. Squeeze the lime juice on the taco, add some of the amazing salsa verde (the green stuff) and bite into one of the greatest tacos this city has to offer. For dessert, you must try one of the Paletas - a Latin American version of a fruit popsicle or ice cream bar. The fruit paletas are made with fresh fruit such as strawberry, mango and lime. I ordered one of the cream-based paletas made with coconut, chocolate and an arroz con leche center (frozen rice pudding).

I love this place, and eat here pretty often. They make very good corn tamales, although they are often out of this option. It's a snack bar, really. They have tacos (very tasty), tamales (mais and platano), and various other mexican snacky foods. Like a fabulous corn dish that is full of sour cream and cheese, spicy and sweet. Elotes, I think. Various tostada -type things squiggled with sour cream and meat and veggies, and lots of sweet fruit drinks and ice cream treats. Mexican paletas are sort of a cross between a popsicle and an ice cream bar, the kids I've brought here just love them. It's a good place for lunch, or a snack after shopping on the weekend, esp when you have cranky kids to placate.

This place is under new ownership and is now called Mi Chihuahua. My hubby and I have been a fan of this place for quite awhile. It's one of those hole in the wall places that is worth going back to again and again. It's clear that the new owners are putting some effort into the place. They've done a bit of work on the decor, but don't expect the place to be anything special to look at. It's not. The staff are always friendly and accommodating. They've made an effort to expand the menu a bit, but haven't printed new menus, so the additions are on a chalkboard. There are a couple of dishes here that are really worth getting. My favorite is the esquites, which is kind of a soupy corn dish. It's really sinful with lots of fatty ingredients including tons of gooey cheese. It's a bit on the spicy side, which makes me love it even more, but they'll make it less spicy if you ask. My husband loves getting the shrimp cocktail. It's a pile of jumbo shrimp swimming in a tangy sauce with cilantro and avocado. There are couple of things that they seem to be working on that I appreciate. They used to serve almost everything in styrofoam (boo!!), but they seem to have acquired some dishes and are now serving some of the food on them instead of in icky styrofoam containers. I'd really like to see them get rid of the disposable stuff entirely except when packaging to-go orders.

Went again last week. Sopes were as delicious as ever, and I happened to try the cheesy corn on steroids. I believe the proper term is "esquites" but it was delicious. There was even a nice lady behind the counter that spoke english for this silly gringo. Eat here, because it's good.

Four tacos al pastor and a sugary refreshing agua de piña. That was my tuesday lunch and it was amazing. Whoever decided the menu for this place is a genius. It's basically a compilation of every single awesome LA mexican street cart all under one roof. The menu reads like a greatest hits list, a who's who of salty, savory, and delectably spicy authentic mexican street foods. Tacos pastor, asada, brain, tongue, tortas, that crazy corn on the cob with mayonnaise on it, those wheel shaped chip things, and all the legit flavored ice cream bars that I grew up on. You just want to drink horchata? Screw you they got like 8 different flavored home brewed juices, man up and try the one with strawberries floating in it because it's awesome. This ain't no pepper jack cheese, chip & dip Margarita gavacho hole. You'll be elbow to elbow with the finest latino transplants you can find, xenophobes and closet racists need not apply. You'll just cry about the lack of cheddar cheese anyways. Is it the best taco you've ever had in your entire life? Probably not. But it's familiar. It's comforting. And coming from Los Angeles to Kansas, it's essential. Plus it's all pretty damn good.

After reading the reviews on this place, I figured that I was in for a treat. At the same time, I couldn't have had a more see-saw experience at any restaurant. I'll try to break this down as explicitly as possible. 1) La Cubana Torta. Don't get it twisted, this is NOT a Cuban sandwich. It's a Mexican Torta that is themed after a "Cuban-Style" sandwich. (just sayin') As Helms mentioned, it is a ridiculously delicious sandwich. I believe that at $7.50, the torta is slightly overpriced (Tortas usually go for $3 to $5 with the most expensive torta I had ever seen in KC going for $6). The size of the sandwich was also considerably smaller than your average Torta in town. But as mentioned, the meats, ham and bread used were all top-notch. Quality over quantity hands-down. However, the review sadly will go downhill from here 2) Horchata. The horchata tasted absolutely nothing like a traditional Mexican horchata. My wife is probably the most serious horchata connoisseur on the planet and she straight gave it a zero out of 10. After tasting it myself, I couldn't agree more. - 1 star. 3) Water. I have absolutely no idea how to say this, but i'll say it as clear as possible. I WAS CHARGED $1.50 FOR TAP WATER. Seriously. And if I had thought twice, I would have kept my receipt and taken a picture of it as proof. She called it "Agua Natural" or for the Gringo translation "natural water". This is inexcusable. That was straight old-fashioned Johnson county tap water in a Styrofoam cup. And after having eaten at a kazillion restaurants, this was a first for me. I would go - 2 stars for something so stupid on their part, but the Cubana saves them from the beatdown. -1 4) Carne asada taco. This taco was a disgrace. The meat was definitely not on the juicy side and the salsa provided with it was 50/50 at best. But the no brainer for me was CABBAGE on a taco. CABBAGE???? Sorry, but traditional Mexican tacos are straight cilantro and onions ONLY. Chapultepec's all over the world are shedding a tear on reading this. You wanna dress it up otherwise, that's on you. FAIL. - 1. My assessment? Order a La Cubana with a drink other than their horchata / tacos to go and you will have a great experience. Otherwise, buckle your chin strap and get ready for a wild situation.

Eh. The steak tacos were okay. I didn't get why there was shredded cabbage on my tacos, though. I don't remember what my kid ordered, but he was underwhelmed. He also got a cup of bubble gum ice cream before we left. He said it was good. I know, what a crappy review, huh? There's not much to say here.

Finally tried the torta here called "La Cubana" or as I like to call it "Heaven". Truly though, how can you go wrong with a sandwich that has 3 types of pork on it? You heard me people - three types of pork! This sandwich, as I mentioned previously, is basically a Mexican Dagwood. It had carnitas, pastor, & ham in the pork category, and carne asada as its beef offering. There was also, cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomato, beans (Dagwood), and mayo (so be aware mayo haters!). I loved it again and am going to go ahead and name this place a hidden gem until it proves me wrong.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
