My husband and I came here for a Sunday afternoon lunch. The restaurant was very warm. There was only one other table of people here but they were VERY loud and their small kids ran around the restaurant. The waitress took 10 minutes to take our drink order and another 5 minutes to take our food order. We had been here an hour by the time we got our food. The food was okay at best. The waitress was very rude and in a hurry to do nothing. She tossed our to-go containers at me and sped away. What? Who does that? As we were waiting the 10 minutes for our change a bug crawled up the wall. I'm no expert but it was definitely a roach. We will not be coming back.

We've been there several times. The food is good, the service is awful. Yesterday evening was the worst experience ever. There were 2 servers and 5 tables. We sat on the patio, it took 10 minutes to place our drink order and they got that wrong, we placed our dinner order and ordered an appetizer they got that wrong. The appetizer arrived 20 minutes later and after another 50 minutes our food had not arrived. Everyone on the patio commented on the bad service and how its this way almost every time. I might go back again but to will be a long time.

First time here. Came on a Tuesday. Food was pretty good.... But service was pretty slow tonight. Maybe new server, maybe just busier night than usual....but real slow. Great patio, great for chill evening.

Oooooh this place is wonderful!! So glad my BFF intro'd me to it today. We sat on the patio and just had an amazing time. It's a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. The chairs are comfortable, and the service was absolutely perfect. Our server, Molly, was a delight. She was just so sweet, funny, polite, and attentive. She is proud of her restaurant, and it shows in her enthusiasm. All of the food we ordered was spectacular. My friend recommended the Mexican Street Corn as a side dish, and I'm so glad she did. It was such a wonderful mix of savory, spicy, and sweet. The chips and salsa aren't complimentary, but they're so fresh & delicious, that I can't complain. There are 2 salsas, and we also ordered the guacamole- it was chunky, lime-y, and perfect. We were stuffed, but the food was so wonderful that we decided to order some dessert. We had the churros- they're so, so good- flavorful and piping hot fresh, drizzled with caramel and honey. Found out that Tuesday is buy 2/get 2 free on tacos. We will be back to test those out for sure!!

Wow, very impressed with the food here. My wife got the tamales and I got the shredded chicken and pork street tacos. Absolutely delicious. When we went, the owner was the only one in the kitchen cooking everything up, so there was a bit of a wait but totally worth it for some authentic, amazing food.

Not impressed one bit. The food was bland. Our group ordered a variety of items to check out. We all decided we were disappointed after reading the reviews. The street tacos needed salsa which isn't provided. One of the group mentioned that this tasted more like authentic Mexican food from south of the border. If you like bland, you've found the right place. I prefer flavor.

Checking this place out for the first time. Queso Poblano Espanica was good, I think it would be better by adding chorizo. My wife had the ground beef street taco and a chicken street taco, both were tasty but the beef was a little dry. I had the pork tamales, these were very good and super yummy, I definitely recommend these. Service was speedy for lunch but then again there were only two tables. Ha. We were here early on a Sunday.

Outstanding food. Best Mexican I've had in the US. friendly. Every dish is authentic and hand crafted. Not just a burrito covered in sauce. Will be back a million times. All the sides are incredible too.

Chips and salsa are not complimentary but we ordered the guacamole with chips. Chunky and very fresh! I ordered 2 street tacos (pork) and very good! Also had a tostada and it was by far my favorite ever. Cheese is additional on almost anything on the menu. Other party members ordered the burrito and added a cheese sauce. Thumbs up for that item! It's a smaller establishment and it was a slow when were there (Sunday afternoon). Server was good and food came out hot and quickly. Thanks Jose!

This food is NOT another Mexican chain restaurant. We stopped in one day after a nearby museum visit. Had no idea what to expect. We were blown away by the great tasting and looking food that we devoured. The chef is a true chef with pride in his preparation and plating and it shows with the artistry and precision in his work. The tastes were fresh and light. Great chips and salsa, although not complimentary. Wonderful Burritos with great queso, rice, and beans. Great wait staff who was attentive and pleasant. We live 45 minutes away, but will be back!

Service was fine but the food was unimpressive. Not a thing authentic about it. Cheap ingredients, too, I think.

Service was SLOW. The place wasn't packed but they were understaffed possibly because our waitress was running her butt off. It took a while to get water and chips/salsa on the table. By the way chips and salsa were $2.50. Group of 3 that came in 15 min after us was served their food 10 min before our group of 6. Food was ok but not great. $6.95 for white cheese and $2.50 for chips and salsa didn't seem right but I get it if there are people coming in and abusing the free chips and salsa. Just really dumbfounded at how this was a 4 star place. I would give it 3 if they were on their game. Unfortunately tonight wasn't the night.

It's about time I wrote a review since we have been several times and it's always been great. We've had the tacos (a great deal on Taco Tuesday, four tacos for $5), sopes, enchiladas, queso blanco. It's all good. And no, the chips and salsa aren't free. And no, that doesn't bother me when both are freshly made and delicious. Service has always been very good, and again, for as close as you can get to authentic food in Shawnee, the prices are great. We'll definitely continue to go back.

Fogones is a cute neighborhood restaurant that serves inexpensive authentic Mexican dishes. I stopped in with a friend of mine, and together we ordered tamale, burrito, taco, and a few margaritas. There were several specials listed, but we were eating light, so we did not partake. Chips were complimentary and served with several variations of salsa in small plastic containers. None of the salsas were that great, you could tell they were homemade, but perhaps made a few days earlier. The pico salsa was dry, and none had any real kick. The burrito was fine, but the tamale was wonderful. The carnitas was juicy and tender, and the masa was just right. Fogones has a family feel to it, and is definitely family friendly. I would go back for tamale any time, and would like to try some of their other specialties.

I've visited twice, once for a late dinner and once for an early dinner. On both visits, I was seated promptly and service was great. I drank iced tea on both visits. I also noticed that the menu was pretty small, but as long as the food is decent, I'll overlook that. However, that is where the similarities end. On my first visit, chips and salsa were placed on my table. After a few bites I asked for some hot salsa, the server said he'd have the chef make some. They brought it back and it was great. I also had cheese dip for an appetizer, it was okay. For my entrée, I ordered chile relleno. Now, I've had this at every Mexican restaurant I have been to. It has always been a cooked pablano pepper, stuffed with cheese, coated in egg batter and a light coating and covered in more cheese. This was nothing like that. There was cheese in the middle, but no topping. The coating was very hard and chewy. The side of rice was okay but bland. I did want to try the street tacos, so I said I'd be back. On my next visit I noticed that I didn't get chips and salsa right away, that's when I noticed that you now have to PAY for them. When I asked why, I was told too many people were coming in and eating chips and leaving. I couldn't believe a Mexican restaurant not serving them for free. So I paid for them. $1.99 I ordered 4 street tacos (2 pork, 1 beef, 1 chicken) with a side of rice. Pretty good! But the fact you have to pay for something that is free everywhere else leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I also noticed that they changed the menu and the chile relleno and a few other items were gone.

We went here for a group happy hour on a weekday. I was pretty excited about the place, as I had heard good things, but we left disappointed. Perhaps it was an off night, but here's my experience. Let's start with the positives, shall we? Positives: Cheap cheap happy hour specials. Cute patio. Rumchata beverage (Horchata-rice milk-, rum, cinnamon...delicious). Decent food. Chicken tacos were pretty good and the spinach dip had a nice kick to it. Negatives: We had extremely slow service. It took at least 30 minutes, if not longer, to get our drink orders. At one point, a member of our group, and former waitress, began expediting for our server because it was so slow. We did have a largish group (10-15), but I felt it was unreasonably slow. The meat was a little dry, especially the pork. And then the kicker, two of us had stomach aches after our dining experience...not certain that the two events are related, but it gives me pause.

Had the fish tacos with cabbage and my wife's leftover chichen enchiladas for lunch the next day. All were high quality but my wife freaked out about the pork backfat in the beans. Not what she was expecting. Too authentic for a western Kansas girl.

Fogones is under new ownership as of January 14, 2013. The restaurant has had a bit of a facelift and a significant menu upgrade but I am so happy to report that the food is still excellent and extremely affordable. In fact, we might be eating there a few times a week--and with $1.50 tacos, why not? The carnitas are especially good, as is the roasted corn side dish. The onion-lover with me gave the citrusy slaw a big thumbs up. He was only able to spare a tiny bite of his shrimp/seviche tostado salad (can't remember what it was called) and I know why he didn't share more. It was really good. All dishes arrived with plenty of fresh cilantro and no melted cheese--just what we were looking for.

Kind of disappointed :-( Sweetie and I visited Fogones based only on Yelp reviews, which were without exception very good. Because of those reviews, I convinced him to forego our favorite Mexican restaurant in order to try this place. Wish we hadn't. To be clear, this place isn't bad. It is more "real" Mexican than many places- no melted yellow cheese, no lettuce on the tacos, etc. The food is prepared fresh, on the premises. And the server was efficient and friendly (without being too friendly). Both the dining room and the open kitchen appeared to be quite clean. But... on to the food. We ordered tacos, with refried beans and rice on the side. Three different kinds of tacos- carnitas, cochinita pibil, and carne asada. All three meats were incredibly dry. Sahara-desert dry. And lacking in flavor, and without the faintest trace of salt. We had to add a lot of the decent pico de gallo to give the tacos any moisture and flavor, so they ended up tasting like nothing but that- the pico. As for the beans, they were (thanks the stars) not the overly-soupy bland beans served by many places, but thick, almost like a paste (just the way I prefer them!). Unfortunately, the beans lacked any hint of salt. The rice was the typically bland orange-tinged "Mexican" rice. Not really worth eating. My favorite aspect of the meal- the freshly-brewed iced tea. It had a great tea flavor, unlike the diluted liquid that is too often served in many restaurants. Prices seemed to be quite high for a little hole-in-the-wall place. I am hoping that the place fixes its problems with the details (and maybe lowers the prices a little?).

So apparently, when I wasn't looking, Fogones went and got a makeover. The cute little street taco cafe is all grown up! They are under new ownership. The dining room has been redecorated and the kitchen is slightly less open. The lighting is dimmer, making the space feel more refined. The menu is much longer now. There are lots new choices, but the tacos and burritos from the early days are still available. The services is still fast and friendly as ever. I can't remember what it was called but I had shredded seasoned chicken served over corn cakes and topped with guacamole. The chicken was tender and juicy, the corn cakes light and crispy, the guac fresh! My husband had tamales, I was lucky enough to get a single bite. Tasty pork wrapped in traditional masa and topped with red sauce. We love the new Fogones and can't wait to get back and try more of the new menu.

Ok, this little Mexican restaurant in downtown shawnee is not like other chain Mexican restaurants... It's better its traditional Mexican. I have had alot of the things on the menu, my favorites are the fish tacos, chimi changa, steak street tacos and chicken qeusadilla (add corn). They also have a really good breakfast burrito on sundays, and if you ask nice enough, may make one for you for lunch or dinner during the week! The salsa and chips are awesome also, definitly worth it!

I'm a fan. The food is solid and the service was courteous and quick. We had a bit of sticker shock for a mexican meal, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars. $90 bucks for a basic mexican dinner for two adults and 2 kids is high. Aside, I'm glad we discovered this place off the beaten path and would recommend it.

This place has a lot of potential and offers something a little different, especially for central Shawnee. Pezcadilla was yummy. Carne Asada tacos were lacking seasoning, but were so close to being perfect. Prices are great and I look forward to trying their different offerings.

Very quiet at 5pm on a Saturday. Very flavorful food. Good variety. Service good. Queso dip good (a bit too thin). Special order for espinaca enchiladas delivered and quite good. You should be pleased here.

A lot of work went into turning this space into the colorful, cozy spot that has been so many things in the past. The location is great in the little downtown strip in Shawnee! I recently took my sister there and after we sat down and were brought our food, she immediately commented that it reminded her of a little place you would go on vacation. I agree. With cold Tecate in hand (served with a wedge of lime) I enjoyed trying each kind of salsa with fresh chips. I ordered the carnitas and was very happy. I love seeing the same friendly faces of the family that runs it and wish them much success!

When we first walked into the restaurant, we were overwhelmed by an odd smell, which was very unappealing. Luckily, it was a nice day, so we sat outside. We started with chips and salsa. Their chips were normal tortilla chips, nothing special. The salsa verde was good, I wasn't a big fan of the red salsa but it wasn't bad. Chips and salsa are very important for my rating of a Mexican restaurant, and theirs was just okay. As an entree, I had two street tacos, al pastor and chicken, both were very good. I also had a side of roasted corn, it was okay but nothing I would order again. One of my coworkers had the chicken chimichanga and really liked it. Bottom line, I would go back if I was in the area and wanted Mexican food, but I'm not going to make a special trip to eat there.

I visited Fogones a few weeks after my first (and likely only) trip to Mestizo. Boy, did I feel stupid. It's good. Really good. Atmosphere? Paper plates, plastic ware, salsa in little plastic cups, very friendly people. After you taste the food, you WILL NOT CARE about the lack of cloth napkins. Trust me. Well, you might - it's so dang reasonable, you can afford to eat a lot of it - and often.

Still awesome. They changed the menu, but you can still get the 3 taco special.....You literally cannot go wrong with their cantina tacos.....I took Kevin S. and hes a believer now....

This is the place if you are looking for an authentic Mexican menu in north Johnson County. I've eaten here twice and cannot wait to return. The salsa is the best in my 40 plus years of consuming salsa. The pico de gallo was my favorite. Then, the original and pineapple were my next favs. They make an extra extra extra spicy if you are the daring type. The pork tacos carnita style are amazing. My hubby his margarita!! Very nice family owned biz!

I love, love, love this place. It is authentic, the food always fresh and delicious and the best burrito I have tasted since I moved to Kansas from California 17 years ago. Never was big Chipotle fan, if you taste a burrito at Fogones you will understand why. Great Margaritas help too.

100 REVIEW!!! (waiting for applause)...(but only hear crickets) I decided to make my 100 a local place. This is actually a 3 1/2 stars..... I see promise in this place, and want it to rise to a 4 or 5 star. New Mexican restaurant in good ole Shawnee Kansas (Shawnee could use one) Not been opened long (family owned), now here is the low down. You walk in to a vibrant Mexican colored decor, hearing great Mexican music. It is a walk up to order at counter place. The menu consists of quesadillas,, tamales, fish tacos, mole, rice (very good) and beans, and assorted meats. I hear they have ostrich but I wasn't going to try that. Everything is a la carte. The tamales are ok, not the best I have had but they were a-ok. I also had a barbacoa taco, and it was pretty good but lacked a little flavor, they had cilantro, onion, pico de gallo, red and green salsas, pickled red onion (which was DELISH) and pineapple salsa( very hot but DANG IT WAS GOOD!!!) as toppings to choose from, which is good cuz I'm a topping kind of girl. My hubby ordered 2 carnitas tacos and a tamale, a side of rice and a bottled Mexican apple drink. With my one taco, tamale, and bottled water, the GRAND TOTAL WAS $18.00 I really REALLY want to see this place succeed!!!! The family is so very friendly. I will return, and I hope to have my next review with an added star or 2. So here I go, my last review for 2011, and my 100. Mwah!!

Best authentic Mexican food you can get in Shawnee! I've been there a couple of times and everything I taste is always fresh and flavorful! Highly recommend it! I really hope this place does well.

With a new owner/management as of Jan 2013, this place is even better than it was before. New menu, new food, this is upscale Mexican in downtown Shawnee. We've been there twice in one week and can't wait to go back. They start with chips and salsa (of course) but include a wonderful green sauce. The espinaca dip is thick and rich and wonderful. I had the street tacos, one with carne asada, one chicken, one shrimp--all wonderful. Hubs had the chile relleno and was extremely impressed. Absolutely wonderful Mexican food in an unpretentious setting. For me, this restaurant has a "wow" factor that I don't often find.

  • Andy P.

If this is truely authentic, then I guess I don't care for "real" Mexican food. everything was bland and extremely dry. Burrito was large, but full of dry pork and rice. No sauce, no cheese, no salsa, nuthin. Tacos were equally as bad. Tamale was the only decent thing. Not much to choose from on the menu either. Apparently they have upgraded from paper plates to actual dishes now though.

  • Kristin M.

Absolutely loved it! Truly authentic food. Must must try the fried tacos. ... so glad I can enjoy those so close to home now. Interior is cute , colorful like Mexico. Food is served on paper plates. ...not a fan of that. But will so become a regular.

This place is a new favorite! Another review stated "it can take a quick minute to get used to be after that the food is exceptional!" I completely agree! When we first got there, I wasn't sure I was going to like it. They served the food on throw away plates with plastic silverware and paper cups, HOWEVER, once we got the food, I was completely wowed! :) It was just as I had eaten when I was in Mexico and was so yummy. They make the tortillas right there and were so fresh! The service was great. If I had to give a negative, it is that they don't serve strawberry margaritas! :)

I've been to Mexico several times, I've tried several different "Mexican Resteraunts", and this is, BY FAR, THE best place I've ever been too. Simple menu, GREAT service.

I had two tacos with carnitas and they were delicious. It was served with cilantro, onions, and lime. My wife had the carne asada burrito with rice and beans. She had the pico de gallo and avocado salsa (spicy). She said it was the best burrito she has had since living in Kansas (16 yrs). Growing up in Calif..we have always been looking for a great burrito and taco place and I think we found it

My husband and I have been to Fogones several times and each time has been great. They have many different salsas to choose from, my favorite is the salsa verde and the hot. Definitely try them all! Each time we have been here the staff has been wonderful, going out of their way to make sure you enjoy the food. Great addition to Shawnee!

If you have not tried this neighborhood gem in Shawnee you should! We have been twice and the presentation and quality are top notch. Try the fried Sopes entree or the Baja Crab Cakes, absolutely delicious and generous portions!

We went on a Wed night in July, at about 7:30. It's been very hot and humid here and we just assumed a restaurant would have fully operational A/C. It felt like A/C wasn't on, or was broken. A very tired-looking server/hostess, with sweat on her face rushed up to us to seat us. We later learned she was the ONLY server and hostess in the joint that night! It made us kind of nervous how she had to constantly rush around. She seemed really stressed and at the breaking point! My son spilled his glass on the floor, and this woman had to clean it up. I felt really embarrassed. I ordered a street taco with carnitas and a bean tostada. Both were good but not life-changing. We left our server a REALLY good tip. We were appalled by the working conditions here. You should just close for one night if you only have one server and no A/C.

Great little place in downtown shawnee. The food is excellent, the location has access to great parking by parking in the city hall lot. One of the very few places I've found in kc that doesn't drown everything in red sauce and a mound of cheese.

  • Lisa W.

Our first visit. This is a family owned and run restaurant. We ordered the queso to start and when we received it; it seemed thin and we both thought that we had made a bad decision in trying this place. We ordered. I chose the tamales. When entrees arrived all we could say was wow. The presentation was amazing these looked like some elaborate gourmet presentations. How did they taste; amazing! Authentic Mexican food not like the chains where everything is covered in cheese. This was amazing! The cilantro lime rice was great, everything was superb. My husbands came with a side of guacamole and next time we are here definitely ordering that instead of queso. You have to give this a try. But don't expect to be rushed out. Jose is the owner and also the chef. He is NOT a cook he is CHEF!!

Wife and I had driven by this place a hundred times and finally stopped today. Not busy at all, but it didn't stop our curiosity. We weren't disappointed. I don't mind paying for chips and salsa if it is worth the price, and the salsa verde certainly qualifies. I agree with previous reviews in that the red salsa is just ok. We started with the queso blanco as well, which wasn't bad. I think we will go with the Espinaca next time, though. Our entrees were delicious. I ordered tacos al pastor and my wife had street tacos. We both left full and happy with our orders. Definitely recommend it for authentic Mexican food fans as well as Tex Mex newbies looking to try something different.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
