Now this might be a biased review, however, I really love the Tea Garden. Originally from Kansas, but now living in Chicago, whenever I come home to visit Mom, we always go to Tea Garden. My mom is dear friends with the owner, Anne...who is seriously, the sweetest lady you will meet. She is friendly, treats her patrons as family, and goes the extra mile. Now, as I said, this could be a biased review, but prove me wrong. They have excellent lunch specials and a buffet that is really a lot more quality then those other crap "chinese" buffet resturants. The food is authentic, but do not fear, she also makes the standard American chinese foods such as General chicken and sweet and sour chicken. Get the fried pot stickers, hot and sour soup, mongolian beef, kung pao chicken...its fantastic. Seriously, prove me wrong...the best Chinese in the KC burbs.

Just a note, I'm not one to give a 5-star rating to a restaurant so keep that in mind. Tea Garden is a pleasant restaurant with very good Chinese food. The service is excellent and on my visit, the hostess was very friendly and rather funny. This is definitely one of the better Chinese restaurants I've been to in the KC area.

People are always nice and the lunch buffet is probaby one of the better ones.

I've eaten Chinese food from here to California to Shanghai and back again, and I consistently find myself going back to the Tea Garden for the simple fact that the food really is that good. Let's get a few things out of the way. There really isn't much going on at the Tea Garden in way of traditional dishes. You won't find cilantro filled tofu dishes like you might at Jen Jen's in Overland Park, who do traditional food pretty well. The Tea Garden also isn't the king of what you're used to. General Tso's Chicken, Crab Rangoon, and all their ilk are American Chinese food, and I'd pick China Inn in Olathe as the best representative of that. What the Tea Garden does is focus on getting a few original dishes done right that you will have never had anywhere else. When you stop in do the restaurant a favor and try something other than the buffet (which as others have stated is small, but has a good selection and is turned over frequently.) I'm not a fan of a buffet in any shape or form so it's a good thing the Tea Garden's chef specials actually live up to their names. I'm a fan of the following... - Ma-la Tofu - Autumn Green (also a Tofu dish) - Hot Braised Chicken - Romeo and Juliette - Honey Walnut Shrimp - Purple Moon Vegetarians, take note, there's some great dishes here for you. The afore mentioned Autumn Green and Ma-la Tofu dishes are deep fried firm tofu and don't come off as mushy if tofu has ever been a turn-off for you in the past. The sautéed green beans (which I believe uses a combination of soy sauce, plum sauce, and brown sugar among other things...) and vegetarian dumplings are also fantastic. The co-owners (and husband and wife team) of Ann and Winston will make sure your food is consistently good and will make you feel like part of the Tea Garden family in no time, should you make it a frequent dining destination. I noticed another review stating you can't order your own dish during the lunch hour. It's true they won't seat you sometimes with a menu during lunch sometimes, perhaps assuming incorrectly that everyone's there for the buffet on the lunch hour, but you can absolutely order from the menu as of August of 2010, so don't let that deter you. The service isn't flashy. You won't have anyone wearing starched uniforms spouting a mile long list of adjectives to prove they can memorize a special. They'll make sure you're taken care of but not to the point of pestering. They're always cordial and friendly. The Tea Garden of course holds a special place in my heart since I moved to the KC area. I had eaten at a plethora of Chinese restaurants but kept on coming back to the Tea Garden thanks to the friendly service and the great food.

Johnson County is a land where great things lurk unexpectedly in bland strip mall locations. Case in point- Tea Garden. On a stormy summer evening we were on the look out for some Chinese take out. We didn't have high expectations, but Tea Garden really came in above and beyond what we expected. Think contemporary Chinese at a good price. The Tofu with Black Bean sauce was fantastic, the Autumn Green dish under Chef's Specialties was even better. Ordering the Tofu as a Combo Platter was a great way to get some Fried Rice and Rangoon, as well as a smaller portion size of food- perfect for keeping your bill down as well. If you are looking for greasy American-style Chinese food (a la most of those icky buffet places) this is not for you, but if you want something flavorful and fresh head on down to Tea Garden.

Food: 3 stars Service: 4 stars Decor: 2.5 stars Pretty standard Americanized chinese, executed well if you order off the menu. The buffet is not as good (but much better than the typical Chinese buffet). Good service.

We ate at Tea Garden last weekend for the first time and it was outstanding. The fried tofu was incredibly crisp and the steamed dumplings were super-tender. I also liked the Crispy Beef and the eggplant dish (can't remember the name). Service was very prompt and friendly. Tea Garden is well worth a trek to the strip-mall.

You won't see 5 Stars from me until I've enjoyed a place at least a couple of times... Service and consistency have to be validated, right? What I mean is that an ideal experience can also be an anomaly. Not the case at this little gem in Olathe. Having dined at Tea Garden twice, I can definitely say that this place has earned its stars on so many levels. I went there for supper, before a movie. Then the next day I had a late lunch, and tried one of their lunch specials. If I'd been there an hour earlier, I would have caught the lunch buffet, which I've heard is quite good. Let's start with the service and atmosphere. I love a place that has a friendly and inviting energy. The owner and staff at Tea Garden really make you feel comfortable. Smiles, laughter and light conversation fill the place. And while the decor is simple, it is also tasteful. Large photographs that are actually interesting to view hang on the walls. Nice tile and light green paint are the theme. They keep the place clean and warm. Okay, now on to the great food... I had the hot and sour soup to start. The taste was sublime. I didn't see any meet in it, which is fine. Good to the last drop. At both meals I had their pan-fried dumplings. These are honestly the BEST I've ever had - anywhere. They are large, hand-made, and very flavorful. Well worth the wait! Lastly, the entrees were delicious. I have sampled the cashew chicken, hunan beef and pork with dried red pepper. There was enough sauce to coat the ingredients, which was just right. I'm sure you know many places that float a few veggies and meat in a thick pool of sauce. Tea Garden's entrees were perfectly-seasoned, and very generous portions. The prices were surprisingly low. I believe they are closed on Sundays. I will definitely be there again soon for the lunch buffet. For someone who loves Chinese food as much as me, this is definitely a great find! I hope that you enjoy it, too - and come back here to write about it!

We had a fantastic experience at this restaurant. The food was some of the best Chinese food I've ever had. The flavor was delicious and balanced, the textures of the meat and vegetables were great, and the rice was cooked perfectly. I had ordered the Sesame Chicken and thought it was particularly good. It was sweet, but not too sweet. They brought the food out very quickly The staff was really nice, service was great, and the prices were reasonable. The restaurant was also very clean and nicely decorated. I get the impression the owners really care about their customers.

Stop being so modest Tea Garden. You are way better than the stereotypical cookie cutter strip mall Chinese restaurant. Dined here the other night and got all up in some Crispy Sesame Chicken with fried rice. Love the thinly sliced chicken cutlets (as opposed to the huge, intimidating mega chunks you usually find everywhere else). Snow peas and carrots were fresh and complemented the sesame sauce nicely. The entire dining experience was sensational (uber friendly wait staff, OCD cleanliness, etc.). Future visits are definitely forthcoming...

The tea Garden is definitely my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. I've been going there for quite a few years and the service and food is amazing. The owner recognizes countless customers by name and the food and drinks are always delivered quickly. I would reccomend the steamed vegetable dumplings. The combinations are also very good and they are always willing to make substitutions for dietary restrictions.

Great Chinese food. Recommend the ragoons, Tofu family style (make sure it is the one with brown sauce), the amazing chicken, and general Tao's chicken

By far my favorite Chinese buffet! Great service and despite their limited selection...their food trumps quantity with quality great tasting Chinese food. Although it may not be authentic Chinese food...I think it blows all it's competition by continually churning out fresh food every 10minutes to keep the buffet fresh and hot! Favorite entrees: Fried Chicken skewers Beef & Brocolli Sauteed stringed sweet potatoes The fried chicken skewers are to die for! Literally they are the first to get snatched up when their fresh outta the fryers! Perfectly seasoned with the right amount of crunch in every bite. Stays crispy, since they make new ones every 5-10min. The staff is fabulous! All Chinese women staff! Head lady keeps the whole staff organized and efficient in satisfying their customer! Talked to a few frequent patrons of the place and they said Tea Garden has been around since the mid-90s and the taste of their food hasn't changed one bit. They've kept the same success formula going for 20years now! They also said that they haven't renovated the place since then. My jaw dropped because Tea Garden is spotless and super clean! I will definitely keep coming back to this cozy and lovely Chinese buffet. I'd rather come to this place than those huge Chinese buffets that offer a gigantic array of food but not necessarily focus on the taste of each entree. I need to try their lunch...according to their menu it looks like there's more authentic and traditional Chinese options Happy Eating!

I love this place! I especially love that it is local and it has been around for a while. The family that owns it is soooo nice. So expect genuinely kind service. I ordered the shrimp with garlic sauce, sweet and sour soup, egg drop soup, and veggie spring rolls. The shrimp was fantastic. It was perfect in quantity, and defiantly worth every penny. The spring rolls were not my favorite, but that's just me.

Another good meal and good service ...had fried rice which was much more than I could finish. Very well prepared and presented. Our favorite oriental restaurant.

Not good at all , I ordered two ordered 2 orders of spicy chicken fried rice with white meat, I got two orders of bland chicken fried rice with dark meat. The rice was dry like it been sitting for awhile. I have been going there since it open ,the last 2 times have not be good at all. Won't go back

Awesome food, and OUTSTANDING customer service. I did take out, and the owner gave me free apps and a glass of water while I waited. The wait was so short. I felt so important :)

Great service and phenomenal food. Great in the store or take out. Best crab rangoon I have ever had!

  • Maggie C.

Lunch buffet was hot and fresh! Not too many options, but we did get to choose from hot and sour soup or egg drop, along with fried rice or lo mien, several appetizers (dumplings, small TINY crab Rangoon, and chicken on a stick), and about 8 entree options. I don't recall seeing a single entree that was completely vegetarian, so if you are vegetarian, beware! The meats tasted fresh, the vegetables were perfectly crunchy. Lunch buffet was only 8$!! Staff were very friendly.

4 stars for the food, 5 stars for the two little ladies that waited on me hand and foot. I entered around 1:30, a little past their normal lunch rush. The buffet was getting low and they hurried back and stocked everything I wanted and brought me fresh steamed rice and fresh steamed dumplings. They continued to check on me and extremely helpful and pleasant. Did I mention the food was excellent. Small lunch buffet, enormous service and personality. Will be back again! Thanks ladies for your wonderful service and pleasant personalities.

Then food here is pretty tasty! I like to take my daughters her for there lunch buffet, not had anything off the menu! The waitress were always so so nice, I brought my baby here about a year and a half ago and our waitress even asked to hold her so I could get my food. :) so nice

Eh. That's about all I have to say. They try really really hard here, and it's definitely good, just nothing special. The manager lady is very knowledgeable and friendly. I had the general tso's chicken and it was pretty decent, rice is ok, and the egg rolls are good. Just nothing really to get excited about.

This was my second visit, the reviews are so wonderful but both times my experience has not been so great. The lunch buffet is all I've experienced and they have very few options plus the food appears to have been warming for a long time. Today the rice was so old it was dry and crunchy. The service is good but the food has failed me twice.

Love this place... I have been eating here for 5 years. The location is hard to find but the food and service is absolutely amazing. I always eat their lunch buffet and the food is always fresh and constantly being re-filled. The servers are friendly and seem to know their customers by their names.

It's been almost 12 years since I've been here and it was just as good as I remembered. The customer service is incredible. After asking us what kind of things we liked they basically custom made our dish. My husband likes really spicy things so his dish could have been more spicy but mine was perfect! They brought out a good amount of rice which was nice for my husband as he likes a lot of rice with his meal. I really enjoyed our visit and we will definitely come back to visit. This is a good, clean and friendly place. A good spot to stop in and get a good meal.

Tried this place for the first time this noon. Didn't do the buffet as it looked good, but smallish, and didn't want that much food. Ordered off the menu and it was incredibly hot and fantastic. It is close to my parents, not me, so will be taking them here again, hopefully soon. Really good! Service was outstanding as well

I went here yesterday for their lunch buffet. The owners were incredibly sweet and service was amazing. The buffet was so little! Not very many choices but they had all my favorites so there wasn't anything wrong with it to me :) The food tasted great and again, good service. Going back again soon.

This was one of my favorite restaurants growing up. Some of the kids in the neighborhood used to save up our money and ride our bikes to eat. Every time I go in the owner still remembers my name even if it has been awhile since I've been in. Their buffet is small but the quality is definitely better than most buffets. My favorites here are the crab rangoon and the hot braised chicken. My boyfriend likes to order the pan fried noodles.

My husband and I went for lunch on Saturday. At first I wasn't too impressed, but as I ate and moved from course to course I became more and more positive. We had the buffet. The service was good as well. The food was very good and I really liked the hot sour soup and the General Tao's chicken. They but the real treat was that the buffet was only $7.50/per person and included a drink. We'll be going back.

I hate to say it, but I'm starting to lose my interest in Tea Garden. I've had it several times now, and it just seems to become less and less special each time. Don't get me wrong, the food is still OK, and the service is still fantastic, but beyond that...it's becoming just another Chinese joint in my mind. I understand Tea Garden is trying to be a bit inventive with their food, and get away from the standard, ho-hum Americanized food that's available at Chinese joints around the metro and around the country. I can definitely respect that...but I'd still prefer the truly authentic Chinese food (such as at Szechuan Dynasty down the street). I am started to think Tea Garden is doing a bit too much...trying to be good at a lot of different stuff, rather than great at a few things. My most recent visit consisted of Ma-La Fish, and Beef w/Broccoli. The Ma-La Fish was ok...it was just your standard fried fish in sauce, with various veggies of average tastiness. The beef with broccoli tasted so average that I felt I could cook it at home (and indeed have several times, with it tasting around the same). Look, don't get me wrong, this is an OK place...it just isn't as special as I thought it once was, and prices seem slightly high to me (just ever so slightly). 2.75 stars.

You know it's a good sign when the hostess personally greets diners, by name, as she's escorting you to your table. The decor is simple and conservative. The food is fresh and unique, the standard options are available but there are plenty of surprises peppered throughout the menu. The portions are not huge but you'll find plenty of tempting dishes to choose from so go ahead and get your own entrees so everyone at the table can try something new. The diners around us were clearly regulars, and I can see why. The Tea Garden is very much out of the way for us but it's worth it.

  • Sheri M.

Family run...great food and service. The dishes are fresh and adjustments for spiciness are welcome. The lunch buffet is well-stocked and the dishes are refilled quickly. Vegetables are tender and flavorful. Hot and sour soup is great and there are both interesting as well as familiar dishes on the dinner menu. They will remember you after your first visit!

I've been eating here regularly for over 10 years. It's my very favorite Chinese restaurant in the entire Kansas City area. I'm pretty picky about Chinese food so there are only a hand full of Chinese restaurants I'll re-visit but I eat here almost weekly. The buffet is small but the quality of every single item is top-notch. The flavors are better by far than any other Chinese buffet I've had (and I've had a lot of them). The lunch buffet is my favorite, but their dinner menu is also excellent. I love the Romeo and Juliet and the Honey Walnut Shrimp (even though I don't care much for walnuts this dish is still outstanding!). On top of all the excellent food, the wait staff (which includes Ann who owns the place with her husband) are friendly. I love walking in and getting a greeting by name. They even remember my drink order. It feels almost like family. -dougl

This evening at Tea Garden I decided to try another of the chef's specialties, the Ma-La Tofu. Another delicious winner! The dish consists of perfectly fried cubes of tofu adorned with bits of red pepper, green beans, cauliflower florets, etc., all in a tasty, slightly tart Hunan sauce. Even for those who aren't usually impressed by tofu I would recommend this! The tofu cubes are yummily crispy/crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside, and don't taste like tofu at all -- they soak up the flavors of the dish. Great vegetarian fare, but good for anyone looking for a lighter main dish. Although marked "spicy," the sauce on this dish is quite mild -- if you want more kick ask them to increase the heat. The hot-and-sour soup also remains consistently good. Service is attentive and extremely friendly. What's not to like about any of this? It may be a bit out-of-the-way for a lot folks, but Tea Garden is worth a trip for top quality, beautifully prepared Chinese food by a kitchen that takes its cooking seriously!

Tea Garden is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Kansas City area. It's not the fanciest, but the food is good and the service is, too. It's enjoyable enough that I eat here pretty regularly, and the servers all know me by name. I'm not the only one -- they seem to have a good, friendly relationship with many of their customers, which speaks volumes to me. As for the actual food, Tea Garden has plenty of standard Chinese menu options, but the specials are what I love. My favorites are the Amazing Chicken (a peanut sauce) and Crispy Garden Beef. And their Egg Drop Soup is the best I've had by far. If you like casual places with good food and great service, check it out.

My husband loves this place. Got take out tonight and it was wonderful! The beef was tender and vegetables cooked just right. Crab Rangoon- great! He loves the fried chicken. I went there years ago with kids and it wasn't as kid friendly as the buffet places, but the food is so much better!!!

  • Jessi B.

Not really sure what has happened to this place. Our Lemon chicken tasted rancid, No one could eat it. The shrimp rangoon were soggy, the mongolian beef tasted off. There is some good competition not far away, I won't be giving this place another chance.

After reading all the great reviews of this place, I thought I would try it out. I hate to say it, but I don't see what all the rave is about. Maybe I just got the wrong thing to eat. I went with the Sweet and Sour Chicken combo plate. It came with a chicken eggroll and fried rice. Don't get me wrong, the food was good, but I was just expecting more. Other takeout restaurants offer soup with the combo platter and I did not get that here. I will give Tea Garden another shot and try another one of their dishes.

  • Randy W.

Nice, friendly staff, prompt service. Egg drop soup didn't have much flavor at all. I selected Amazing Chicken after reading about it. The "amazing" ingredient appears to be peanut butter. It was too sweet for my taste, contrary to the "spicy pepper" notation on the menu. I had hoped this place would change my "chinese is chinese" opinion, but no luck. The fortune is pretty provocative, so I'll have to wait to evaluate it!

We stopped in for a snack this afternoon and ordered the Wonton Soup and Fried Pork dumplings. The soup was fine but the dumplings while large were not fully cooked, the meat was still pink. We asked them to correct this and we heard from the kicthen that this was the proper color for the meat and a few other interesting comments. It helps that my wife is Chinese and fluent in Mandarin. The cook proceeded to come out and inform us that the meat, while pinkish, was cooked well done and would not accept that well done pork is NOT pink... :( My wife asked for the ckeck and they brought it over with a subtraction for the dumplings, however they only discounted the uneaten portion. Apparently one bite from 2 dumplings is valued at $1.00. We paid what they asked but will never return.

I can't believe I've been here over 10 years and not tried this place. Really good for a small storefront Chinese restaurant. We tried Autumn Green and Honey Walnut Shrimp based on another Yelper's recommendation and both were really good. (Good call Ryan K) We had hot and sour soup and it was rich and had lots of white pepper just how I like it. The servers were very attentive and friendly. Really surprised that it was not crowded on a Friday night. The only disappointment was the hot tea was generic black tea and not a nice Oolong style. $30 for two entrees, two soups, and tea. Not bad. If you haven't been, give them a try.

We have been going to Tea Garden since our children were small. That's a long time ago, and Tea Garden is hands-down the restaurant with the most consistently high-quality food around. The food is made in small batches, so it is always fresh. The steam table looks small, but that's deceiving. It has dumplings, rangoons, spring rolls, chicken on a stick, chicken tempura, and wings for appetizers. There is always delicious egg drop soup and hot and sour soup. There is a cabbage slaw for fresh vegetables. Fried rice and noodles are available, as well as 7-8 rotating entrees. They often have a vegetarian selection on the buffet. The buffet lunch includes a drink at no extra cost. The difference between what is on the buffet at Tea Garden and the larger buffet is taste. Everything on the Tea Garden buffet is meticulously prepared and perfectly spiced. It's always hot and fresh. On larger buffets, nothing is bad, but most dishes are mediocre. At a larger buffet, when I am forced to go there by circumstances, I tend to overeat as I try to find something that tastes as good as what they serve at Tea Garden. If you're in the Olathe area, stop by the strip mall at 127th and Mur-Len. Treat yourself to a taste of China.

Best chinese food in the KC area? Yep, it's right here in an Olathe strip mall. I know, I know, but it's true. Amazing food, amazing service, A+ in all regards. Do yourself a favor and order the chicken with cashew nuts.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
