I've only visited once so my review is on this one visit. As the rating shows, "I've had better". The decor was cute, clean & interesting and the space was nice & open, both of which I enjoy in a restaurant but the food was just "OK". We ordered appetizers to share instead of meals. We got the bean dip, guacamole, white cheese dip and a chili. The bean dip was basically a lump of re-fried beans covered in the white cheese dip. The white cheese dip was as expected and yummy. The guacamole wasn't bad but I've had much better. This had large pieces of onion that overwhelmed the rest of the ingredients and the avocados were mashed pretty smooth. I like a little more texture. As for the chili.. don't bother. It was greasy and pretty bland. I'd like to visit again to try the meals and possibly review again. They deserve another chance as the wait staff was very attentive and other reviews are very positive as they pertain to the meals.

The place was only half full, but you had to almost tackle a waiter for service. After a waiter finally pointing across the restaurant to a vacant booth (I guess he was to lazy to walk over to the booth with us), we looked at adjoining tables and saw that food looked like it had been sloppily slapped on plates and microwaved to death. We also noted that our table wasn't completely clean. We ordered margaritas and both of us immediately pushed them away after the first sip. They tasted of a gritty, power mix like Koolaid with no tequila, and they apparently had been poured from a room-temperature vat into glasses (they didn't even refrigerate their pre-made margaritas?). A waiter finally came to our table, and he wanted to loudly argue with us about the margaritas by claiming that we weren't in Mexico so we shouldn't expect real Mexican food. Gee, maybe someone should tell the waiters that this is a Mexican restaurant ! Do not waste your time here !

First time here but I'll be back! Im from Atlanta, working in OP for awhile and have been looking in the OP area for good, fun "authentic" Mexican food. I dont always want trendy and this place delivered -- good service, good 'ritas, good food, and good prices. Everyone was having a good time and there was a mix of families and large groups for dinner. You should check it out!

Best Mexican food in Olathe. Love the servers here they're always very friendly. They keep you stocked on the chips and salsa. Rarely ever finish my food at places, but here I did!!! Service was very fast even on a busy night.

This restaurant has your standard Mexican fare and has good prices. Our server was friendly but kept us waiting for the check. Overall we were pleased with our experience and will return.

I like this place. I like the white cheese dip and the Micheladas! last time I got the troplical fajita or something like that, it's the one w/ pineapples on top. It's really really good. I was soo full!

The food is OK here, but every time I've gone the service has been incredibly slow.

I have eaten at Chapala several times now and have thought it is above average Mexican fare each time. Today was no different... To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the chips and salsa they serve. The salsa is average, but I haven't asked for the hot stuff, so that may be my own fault. I told the server today that I normally ordered from the lunch menu and asked him for a recommendation. When I indicated I wasn't really interested in fajitas (his first suggestion), he recommended the Burrito Gigante with steak, so I took him up on it no questions asked. When the plate arrived, I had mixed emotions... the burrito was HUGE, but there were no sides. It very quickly became apparent that the rice and beans I was "missing" were inside the burrito and I would NOT go home hungry. The presentation of the burrito was better than most Mexican restaurants I frequent. The burrito sat longways on a large oval plate smothered in queso blanco with sizable portions of guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo alongside, extending the entire length of the approximately foot-long burrito. [Bring out the tape measure, Subway customers!] Best of all, when I took my first bite, the burrito was hot through and through. No sitting under a heat lamp here! The bottom line for me is my meal has been above average on each visit and the service has been above average as well. I'll keep coming back as long as they maintain a high quality of food and service.

Excellent authentic Mexican food in SoJoCo! I frequent Chapala quite often and am always satisfied with my experience. The food and drinks are consistently good and the service is friendly, yet can be slow on a busy night. They also offer great lunch specials! I love their white queso dip and their fresh guacamole is to die for. I'm a huge guacamole fan, and the guac here is at the top of my list. Foodwise, I've had nachos, enchiladas, tacos and all have been fabulous. Their margaritas are strong and prices are very reasonable.

Great authentic mexican for an affordable price. The service is pretty good. By husband and I really enjoy this place and find it hard to go anywhere else when we want mexican close to home. Loved it: Affordable great tasting meal. Their salsa is good and chips are thin, salty, but not too greasy. I enjoy their enchiladas and also a chicken dish with grilled veggies, mushrooms, rice beans and fresh tortillas. It's a super deal for the amount of food, sorry I can't recall the name right now. Only complaint: Like the live little mariachi band that walks around and plays, however on a busy night it's just way too loud. We could hardly talk b/t the music and the crowd noise. It was not an enjoyable experience. Most nights though it's a very pleasant atmosphere. Lunch menu is great too and super cheap!

I've eaten here several times since it opened. It's great food to eat. I've tried several items off the menu and I have yet to eat anything I wouldn't want again. Someone else brought this to my attention. If you notice you never see a female serve you. It's a culture where the men are the servers. I just thought it was funny that it never even came to my mind to never see a female working in a restaurant when it's usually a female dominated workforce. lol

I really don't consider myself a Mexican food snob. Really. I mean I eat at Taco Bell. And if given the choice, I'd gladly choose Taco Bell over Chapala. We ventured out to Olathe based upon all of the positive yelp reviews... I figured it had to be at the very least pretty good. It wasn't. I feel a little bad about giving it one star since the service was pretty good. We waited about ten minutes for a booth because we had our baby and his carrier with us. They were very accommodating and brought over chips and salsa right away. That was probably the best part of the meal and it wasn't that good. I ordered a tostada (I think they call it a guacataco) and a chicken taco and my husband ordered Chile Colorado, which he usually orders when we go out for Mexican. We also got a small order of the cheese dip because we saw it going out to a lot of tables and seemed to be a specialty of theirs. The cheese dip just tasted like thinned out velveeta to me, with no other spice or flavors. That should have been a sign, but it wasn't. Our food arrived and it just looked blah, but we were both hungry and I piled the mild salsa on my taco. My husband started digging around the food on his plate and pouring half of the salt shaker contents on top of it. Not a good sign, especially considering he's one of the least picky eaters I know. It was basically chewy beef drenched in a tasteless tomato sauce. We flagged down our waiter and he brought over a menu so my husband could order something else. He ordered carnitas and they brought it to him pretty quickly. It was a little better but still incredibly bland. While waiting he ate my rice and half my refried beans (no other bean options here - it's refried or nothing). My food was edible but just not really good at all. My chicken taco was pretty tasteless and the taco shell was pretty stale. Then my tostada thingy had unseasoned ground beef, lettuce and a teaspoon of guacamole (also cheese in a glob). The place was still busy when we left at 8:30. I looked at the food in front of others as we made our way to the front door and it really didn't look any better. Maybe we caught the kitchen on a really off night? I just don't understand how anyone could give this food four or five stars. The just above average service was really the only redeeming factor about our experience here.

Damn you Chapala for exposing my hypocrisy! I hate... no, I loathe that most people consider a plate of melted cheese to be authentic Mexican food. I champion the real stuff every chance I get, and take every opportunity that I can to mock those who enjoy their artery clogging cheese spills. And yet what happens to be my favorite item at Chapala? The cheese covered burrito roqueta. I'm sad to say that I order the same thing every time I go. The burrito roqueta is a flour tortilla filled only with delicious carnitas; rolled up then topped with viscous white cheese and a tomatillo sauce. Its the tomatillo sauce that does it. I would kill for the recipe, bury the body, then pour that the tomatillo sauce over everything in my kitchen that even resembles Mexican food. And yes, the cheese tastes good too. So my favorite dish at Chapala is probably one of the least authentic, but they do offer several items that get closer to authentic than anywhere else nearby. The salsa is very good, and more importantly their hot salsa, which can be specially requested, is blazing! Its made with habenero which is no joke. Wash it down with one of their margaritas which are some of the best around (again, this is Olathe). All in all a great little place, and one of the few places in Olathe that isn't a chain and who's food doesn't come in the back door in cardboard boxes.

I finally toughened up and broke away from the Chimi and tried something different! I ordered the Burrito Roqueta per our waiter's recommendation. Also very good!

This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant. We've gone there for dinner a couple of times, in mid-sized groups and on or own, and it's been a good place to go no matter our size of group. There is always a wait, so be prepared for that. I've tried the Enchiladas Rancheras and the Enchiladas Bandera Mexico and loved both. The red sauce is wonderfully a little different from any I've ever had. My husband hates Mexican food, and I can never get him to go to any Mexican places, but he actually really likes this one also. It seems a little more on the authentic side than most of the other Mexican restaurants in the area, and the prices are very good.

I actually really enjoyed myself here. I have eaten here every week or so for a couple of years now and I finally got a yelp account, so decided to review them. The white cheese dip and salsa make this place great. The cheap but strong margaritas doesnt hurt either haha. This place is just great though and I would recommend it to anyone. The only reason it didnt get 5 stars is because once in a blue moon you will get a waiter that just hates his job. But the food is never lacking. I mean I have ruined some close personal relationships with family members because I didnt invite them to come with me, jk hahaha seriously though.

Best Mexican Resturant!! Chicken chimichanga is beyond!! I don't live in Kansas City anymore but I was just on the phone with a girlfriend who was eating there and I had to look them up to remember the glory days

Thought I'd give this place another try, but it was still the worst Mexican food I've ever had. The first visit, I had a chicken quesadilla & it had shredded chicken in it. It had no flavor & was loaded with chicken. Today I ordered a chicken fajita burrito and it didn't have any veggies in it. It was just chicken, a tiny bit of cheese and sauce. The taco I ordered was soggy and also had no flavor. I make way better salsa then they serve. Very disappointed customer. I really wanted to like this place since it's the only Mexican restaurant by my house.

Lunch specials are awesome. I love the Speedy Gonzales! Good food. Not my number one favorite but not bad! Favorite is Jose Peppers. Close second. The service here is fast. Food is always hot.

Great food. I've had several different menu items and I'm pleased every time. Lunch menu or dinner time. I will say getting in on a Friday evening is a challenge with such a small waiting area and no bar to sit at. Huge crowds on the dinner rush. Get there early on Friday and Saturday night.

Let me preface this by saying I'm a Los Angeles native that transplanted to Kansas and the Johnson Country Area. Which essentially translates into, "I'm incredibly picky and skeptical of any so-called 'authentic' Mexican food." In this case, however, I was pleasantly surprised. Upon walking in, my boyfriend were essentially assailed by live music performed by a single individual and a guitar. Definitely made me think of being back in Los Angeles, at the Grand Central Market. We were seated immediately and were served chips and salsa and had our drink orders taken. I ordered the horchata, and while not bad could have used a touch more cinnamon. We then ordered the white queso dip (based on other yelpers recommendation), not bad, but not as amazing as raved about. I think it was because both of us had had better queso dip. Of course I'm not saying it was bad, on the contrary it was actually quite good. We also ordered our meals, he ordered the burrito real and I ordered the tacos al pastor. Now that was what made the meal - the refried beans that came with his burrito were quite amazing and very much reminiscent of my friends abueltia's cooking. The tacos were everything I missed from getting tacos in Los Angeles or even in Baja. Corn tortillas that I would venture to say were made in house (taste and texture made me think that), which is something I've sorely missed out here in the KC area. Overall an great experience - had fun speaking with the waiter in Spanish. He thought I spoke pretty well, I felt that it was abysmal. Only downside of the whole night was that there was a birthday party for with a bunch of 30-something women who I think had a little too much to drink as they were yelling, cheering, and having a good time. It made ordering and having a conversation with my guy quite difficult. I'll definitely be back and see what it's like when there isn't a birthday party happening....and when I get a craving for tacos al pastor.

My new favorite spot for tacos! "Tacos al Pastor" to be exact---slightly sweet pork topped with cilantro on top of corn tortillas. Couldn't have been better! Started off lunch with the Guacamole Mexicano--fresh avocado, onion, tomatoes and lime juice. Delicious! Also had the Fajitas Jalisco, which was a mix of shrimp, chicken and steak with typical rice and beans. Can't say enough good things about the service either, interacted with multiple servers. They chided about the Chiefs v Broncos game.....but not too much. ;) They missed refilling our drinks, so I can't give them that impeccable 5, but wish I could! Will definitely bring the office here for lunch. Reminded me of my favorite restaurants in Nuevo Vallarta & Puerto Vallarta---Authentic!

Service was passable. It was very busy. White cheese dip is very good. The fajita nachos were good but a little runny.

    The food is ok, it is the service that is horrible. I give everyone a break, but over the course of about 5 visits the service went from poor to deplorable. Seating people around us, forgetting we were there, screwing up the orders, the final straw came when my daughter's order was screwed up and the help started making comments about waht they would like to do with her in the backroom. Problem for them ? They didnt know here husband was from Perras and she speaks fluent Spanish. They were thinking just another dumb Barbie. Go to Mi Ranchito on 119th, this place stinks.;

I've been bringing several lunch buddies to Chapala for years and have always had a pretty good experience...until the evening of Friday, March 23rd. I came in relatively late with my g/f and her 3 kids and since it was Friday in lent, I simply ordered their guacamole salad. After a very long delay, I was presented with what looked like a lightly sprinkled saucer size dish of plain lettuce with a "shmear" of guacamole on top. $3.99. That's it. Okay, so it's a rip-off; live and learn. My lady ordered a Chicken Taco Salad and it was presented all slimey and runny...not at all appetizing. She couldn't eat it. The kids wanted espincaca dip, but the closest thing they have is a bowl of melted white cheese. Another disappointment, but we ordered it anyway. Now, the staff is already putting chairs up on the tables in anticipation of getting outta there, so I take the check to the register (one of the few places that still operate that way) and mentioned that the guacamole salad sure was disappointing, especially in size. The guy at the check out (whom appeared to be part of management) was quick to tell me that his girlfriend works at Jose Pepper's and there's isn't any better and costs much more! I eat at Jose's fairly frequently and know better. One thing you NEVER, EVER do is argue with a customer who is displeased. I tipped the waiter generously (it's not his fault) but hell will freeze over before I ever go back to Chapala again. They've lost all my lunch business (which consisted of 4 to 6 people weekly) and I'm making a point to let every one I know what a bad experience I had there. The only way to really vote on a place is by where the dollars get spent and Chapala does not deserve what customers it has. If you do choose to eat there, go at lunch...the lunch menu is good but stay the heck away for dinner, especially if you're running late. There's some folks working there that seriously need firing. The place has potential, but the service absolutely sucks. Hate to say it. I don't like giving a bad review, but Chapala worked overtime to earn this one.

Hands down the best Mexican restaurant in ks and Missouri! Chapala not only has great food, but class 5 star service. I have been all over the Kansas city area in search of the best food, from fiesta Azteca in raytown, to the salty iguana in Lawrence and Chapala is the best. If u were thinking about going here, now it shouldn't be a question!

Food is great, service not the best. Been there dozens of times. Carne Asada Tacos very good, burritos and inchalatas excellent. There's only a few better Mexican restaurants in the KC metro.

Disappointed. Chapala, I love you and you used to be so good. What happened?!? Superbowl Sunday at 2pm. It seemed like every other Mexican restaurant was closed, so we drove all the way out here. This place was about 1/3 of the way full. We had a booth near the window and it was freezing. If it's cold outside, you can feel it. Bring a jacket; it doesn't seem well-insulated. Four stars for the chips and salsa. They were on point. Perfect fresh warm chips. Salsa was just the right amount of spicy, not that flavorless generic salsa you typically get at other Mexican restaurant chains. It was such a perfect start and it was DELICIOUS! Two stars for the rest of our visit. Cooking food for parties who showed up later than ours and making us wait 50 minutes without an entrée? No, that's not okay. The manager could have at least come out and try to explain what was going on, but didn't. We only had our server attempt to fill us in that the reason was because of the kitchen. At least he kept our chips and salsa filled. So, that's a plus. We left after the 50 minute mark. We will probably come back because we KNOW the food is good here; we've had it before. But, not anytime soon. Meanwhile, I'm chips and salsa-d out.

We have eaten here quite a bit and usually get the same server. I took the boys out for a dinner when mom could not come and we got a different server this time. The food was decent but when I received the bill, I was charged $3.50 for a small RAMEKIN of hot salsa! I wish I had known this before I ate because I had him bring another ramekin of hot salsa with the meal. $7 for salsa...WHAT A RIP OFF!! That will likely be the last time we ever eat there! Free salsa and chips before the meal, but to add a bit of heat they milk you out of $3.50 for 2oz of salsa. BEWARE

  • Bobbi T.

I have been here several times and I'm surprised I haven't written a review yet! We have tried a lot of different things on the menu but somehow always order the quesadilla, chimichanga and the burrito real. I also really like the tropical fajita. The strawberry and mango margaritas are good there. The bf loves the michaeladas. The service here is always great. The staff is super attentive. We always have a full glass of water (or whatever else we are drinking), chips and salsa the entire time we are there. The last few times we have been there, they have had really good artists performing. We got there a little early this last time and only caught a couple songs but loved whoever was singing!

This is a nice little restaurant hidden off of the I-35 / Santa Fe exit. The interior is brightly decorated like somebody in Kansas wants to make you feel at home in Mexico. No bother. It's bright, but it's not super overbearing. The food is surprisingly good. I don't mean to be flip, but it exceeded my expectations. The meals are served with large portions who are cooked and laid out well. There will be plenty of food for you to take to work tomorrow. The service itself was good, but it was slow. It took awhile for our drinks to come out and for chips and salsa to be refilled. When we did see her, our server was pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. We did stop in a little after 2:00 so some of the staff may have been cut and our server may not have had the help she needed. It wasn't a big deal though, everything worked out well in the end. I'm not sure if the is a "must" destination, but if you're hungry and in the area you'll get a good feast.

  • Steven P.

Mexican in Kansas can be a grab bag. Lots of places go too far and make the food ridiculously anglicized. For example: These guys have a burrito dipped in cheese sauce (the Burrito Gigante, from the Gigante region of Mexico) which is about as Mexican as a Scotch Egg. That said? They also have awesomely authentic dishes (the chef's special is like something your Abuelita might make, and their carnitas are also increible) served alongside relentlessly Americanized grub. As a result, EVERYONE can find something they will like. Service is prompt, and the decorations are ridiculous and over the top; as they should be. If they had a Mariachi Grupo playing "Carry on my wayward son" the fusion would be complete.

Since this is a quick drive from work, I've been a frequent Chapala visitor during lunchtime. It's a great place for a quick, tasty, and cheap lunch. Positives: -Great prices on lunch specials, and tasty chips and salsa. -Food comes out quickly and service has always been great. Negatives: -I wouldn't rate it as the best Mexican food in town, but it's certainly more than adequate. Chapala has yet to disappoint during workday lunches, so we'll keep going back!

Absolutely nothing to write home to mom about. This place is just really down right mediocre. The chips are boring, the salsa is boring, the Margarita tasted like it was just the mix. My burrito I ordered could have been out competed by a frozen microwavable version. Do yourself a favor and go just a few blocks down the street to either K Machos or Frontera's, you won't regret it.

This was my first visit to Chapala. The restaurant is bright and vibrant. Was seated immediately for lunch and the waiter told me about the lunch special. Nice not to have to ask! Ordered lunch #3 - a bean burrito, cheese enchilada and rice. It had to be a misprint ... $5.99 for all of that food!? The food was piping hot and pretty darn good. Good, no frills comfort Mexican food. I'll be back to try more items with my family! The staff is friendly and attentive.

Last time I had chapala, my take out order took forever.. And the fajitas that I finally did receive were mediocre. However, we usually like this restaurant and will give it another shot. Generally they have friendly staff and good food.

A friend and I had dinner here tonight at the peak hour and everything was fine. Service was friendly and efficient. The chips and salsa were good. I had the chiles rellenos which I thought were done well -- they tasted fresh and were flavorful. The accompanying rice and beans were good, too. My friend ordered one of the veggie combos and said she enjoyed everything. Prices were very reasonable, and even more so with an Entertainment Book coupon! We'll be back!

Cute restaurant with great food and drink specials! Our server didn't exactly make himself very available, but this is more of a bring-you-your-food leave-you-alone place I think. Whatever, for the price I'll take it. Or maybe it was just the night. I'd go back regardless.

Good, *authentic* Mexican food located near I-35 and Santa Fe/135th. Their lunch menu is incredibly cheap (~$3 to $5) and their dinner menu is only a couple to $3 dollars more per plate. I've had three dishes from here so far and all were very good. I have one favorite Mexican restaurant back home in Colorado Springs that I've eaten at for years (Senor Manuels) and Chapala is the only place I've eaten at in the area that comes close. Their margaritas are cheap in price and come in various sizes and flavors...they have daily specials for each, so you're likely going to get a good deal no matter what. The flavor is far from unique, though. They are very basic and taste too much like a sour mix you can purchase at a grocery store. At less than $10 for a 44oz, though, I will continue to order them while eating there. The service is excellent...it has been each of the handful of times I've been in there with my Wife. Not that it matters entirely...but the entire staff is of Mexican/Spanish descent and incredibly friendly. I've always felt the need to leave a large tip (20%+) after eating. You know it's a positive when you're eating at a Mexican restaurant and in comes a table of customers, speaking Spanish, who appear to not know any of the staff. If this place had better margaritas, I'd give it 5/5.

This is the best authentic Mexican restaurant around. They have great prices and excellent portions. My family loves to go and the three of us can get in and out in under $20 with tip included.

Chapala is so good. My wife and I crave it once a week, and we give in all the time. The portions are huge, and we usually split the fajitas. Make sure you get the white cheese sauce for an appetizer...wow.

This place rocks! The food is authentic and comes out in less than five minutes tops! Everybody treats you as an Amigo!

  • Jason G.

Fun Fact: I don't really care for Mexican food (or at least I thought I didn't) I literally can't even put into words how good this place is. I cannot remember what entrees I've ordered (Burrito Real?) and I can't describe any 'taste' attributes of said dishes. What I can tell you is that I have found the holy grail of KC's best authentic Mexican food and it resides right here in Olathe, KS. I would also like to add that the table service here is a well-oiled machine. The place is always packed out and the wait staff is always on top of getting you seated ASAP, refilling your chips/salsa/drinks, and bringing your entree out quickly.

  • Tony Q.

Most of my friends don't believe me when I tell them my favorite Mexican restaurant is in Olathe. I absolutely love this place. The best cheese enchiladas I've had are from Chapalas. The salsa is incredibly fresh. I love the tamales also. I usually order from the ala carte menu. You can assemble your personal favorites for less than the cost of their combination plate. The staff call everyone "AMIGO", they don't differentiate between gender, i.e. amiga. Oh, I forgot to mention the Margarita pitchers: large & potent.

    (5)
  • Claudia S.

That was REALLY good. Their salsa is perfect! The chips are good, but prefer a thinner chip, personally. Mom had Caldo de Pollo and enjoyed it. They are not skimpy with avocados; it came with a full half an avocado, so did my Alambre Chapala (steak & chicken mixed). Next time I'd do just steak, the chicken wasn't terribly exciting. We also we enjoyed the Pamritas, but would like to try the peach sangria.

Solid. Doesn't stand out in any extraordinary ways. In my opinion, with food, not standing out doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. Chapala's food is good. Have I had better? Yes. Have I had worse? No doubt. So, if you want some good, but not mind-blowing Mexican food, this place won't disappoint.

Get the bloody mary, and then get three more. Well worth the $5 bill and it'll leave you super hungry. The chips and chile are decent. However, for the chile sauce in this type of joint, it should have more spice. I ordered the Tacos al carbon which came on homemade corn tortillas, onion, cilantro, pineapple, and pork in special sauce. Absolutely amazing. I have had plenty of tacos al carbon in my day, and none had the pineapple chunks like these. What a great addition. The prices are comparable to most other Mexican establishments and they usually have a game on somewhere.
