The Bento box has a ton of food! Biggest box I've had. I had the lunch special and the price was very reasonable. I got the steak and it was cooked medium rare and the sushi was good. The miso was very good. The salad was really cold but that's my only food complaint. The atmosphere is clean and stylish, but I don't like that all the windows are frosted. I really like being able to see outside. All in all, great sushi, service, and atmosphere. I'll be back.

Do not come here on a Friday evening or without reservations . It should not take 30 minutes to prepare sushi. Especially without having the manager coming over to apologize for the slow service. Maybe I'll update my review to talk about the sushi if I ever come back. But for now...

I followed the yelp reviews to this cozy restaurant in Town Center and am really glad I did. I sat at the bar and had a very attentive server. I started with iced green tea and perused the sushi menu. I ended up talking to owner and chef Jin behind the bar, who explained uni was not good quality. However, they rotate other special seafood twice a week so there is always something new to try. The special fish of the day included madai (Japanese snapper), toro, and salmon belly. I ordered one of each of those along with whole scallop, tako, ika, saba, hamachi, and amaebi plus a yellowtail-jalapeno handroll. The handroll was made immediately, and it was full of delicious hamachi. Next, I received the majority of my nigiri on one platter, and everything was so fresh and delicious. My third plate had the scallop sushi, amaebi and fried head served on shredded daikon. I like the fried shrimp heads, and this one was particularly hot and flavorful. Everything was so good that I felt the desire to order more. I ordered one more piece each of madai and salmon belly, and one more amaebi with fried head. I enjoyed my experience and felt comfortable dining solo at the bar. I would return.

The good... Before arriving in Overland Park on a business trip, I Googled 'Sushi Restaurants' and because it was close to my hotel, I bookmarked this "Sushi House'. The bad... #1 After entering a second door from the parking lot, I found the restaurant ambiance to be lifeless and bland at best. #2 I ordered Chirashi Sushi and a Tempura appetizer and remarkably, neither of the two waiters knew how to correctly pronounce the meal. #3 I live in the Bay Area of California, and while I appreciate the pricing differences in our locations (a gallon of gas in CA = $2.99), I did not expect to pay $26 for a minuscule meal here. This past weekend I enjoyed a 'Regular' Chirasihi meal at the Sushi House in Alameda (different owners) and I received almost 2x the sashimi for $19. Even more, I could have ordered Chirashi Deluxe for $26 and have received twice the amount and much better quality. I'm reluctamtly giving this Sushi House 2 stars and I wholeheartedly believe what yelp says.... "Meh. I've experienced (MUCH) better."

Do yourself a favor. If you're near Leawood and need to satisfy a sushi craving, come to this spot. Jun's is still #1 in my book, but if I need some sushi and am further south (a.k.a. Leawood), I'd give Sushi House another try. FWIW, it's a tad bit pricey.

Service and the food here is top notch. They anticipate your every need from entrance to exit. We were going to a movie afterwards so time was definitely important we were in and out in 30 minutes on a 3 course meal. We had the Calamari for the appetizer and it was delicous it was actual calamari fried not your standard processed rings in most places. We ordered 3 sushi rolls. The crazy lobster roll, the godzilla roll, and the summer roll. All were among the best Sushi I have had in Kansas all the rolls tasted amazing especially the Godzilla roll it was a pleasant explosion of the different flavors coming together. They brought the rolls on one of their wooden boats(by request), and kept our drinks full the entire time. Did I mention the service was great. We finished off with the tempura fried vanilla ice cream it was the only thing that didn't meet the mark completely. The tempura was a bit mushy for my liking and we couldn't eat it all after all that food before it. It was overall a great experience. We didn't try the bar this time but they do have a full selection of cocktails, saki, wine, and a few beers on tap. Will definitely make a trip back.

GLUTEN FREE SUSHI MENU and a nice little happy hour. I want to say the happy hour was 3-6 monday-saturday. But please do not quote me on this-I could be wrong. The service was excellent-very surprised by this since it was younger people who are not normally as attentive now days. We arrived about 10 min before happy hour was done, we did not order alcohol we were both not feeling 100% that day. The waiter brought out hot wet towels to clean our hands with. I asked for the GF menu expecting some small piece of paper with 5 rolls on it. Not the case, he brought me out a nice bound menu-2 pages long with apps, sushi rolls, combo plates, lunches etc on it. I was elated! You have no idea. I asked him if we could get the order in quick so we could get the happy hour prices on some of the rolls-he complied. The happy hour rolls are about $1.50 less-which adds up. We ordered 4 rolls: philly, spicy salmon, tuna and Alaskan crab. They were a little smaller than I expected (maybe b/c it was happy hour). But the taste was very fresh-the Alaskan crab with the Jap mayo was our favorite. We ended up ordering another roll-we were still hungry. They have gluten free soy sauce as well. For drinks we ordered hot green tea-I think it may be the gun powder green tea, those of you familiar with the different types. You do not get the whole "pot" they bring out an individual cup that is VERY hot. The atmosphere is relaxed; they have a bar you can sit at with a few brewskies on tap. I also noticed wine and hard liquor. The tables are very bare-literally no decorations on them. The restaurant is pretty small-maybe about 20 tables. They have a private in ground table behind a door (you have to take your shoes off to sit there) I think it's for a bigger party. We will be back-heck I will probably go for lunch once a week since my office is maybe a mile away.

Sushi House was in the Leawood Town Center. I came here for dinner because it was restaurant week. I don't think some of the food on the restaurant week menu was on their normal menu unless I just missed it. There were a lot of people here and probably because of restaurant week but it could have been a coincidence. Nobody was sitting at the sushi bar so that was where I sat. I saw there was three private rooms towards the front of the restaurant with sliding doors for privacy. I ordered the Japanese Haru Maki, Wakasaya Steak and Veggie Donburi, and the Tempura Fried Ice Cream (this was $7 on their normal menu). In addition, I ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll ($7.50) from their normal menu to try their sushi. I waited awhile before my food came out. The sushi chefs were all busy making rolls for other tables and one person was making alcoholic beverages. The Japanese Haru Maki were pretty much two egg rolls sliced in two. Of course, it was a different style of egg roll. It was good in my opinion as well as the sauce I dipped them in. The Spicy Tuna Roll came out next and they were spicy. It was fresh and tasted like other sushi places I've been to. The Wakasaya Steak and Veggie Donburi looked good and tasted good as well. The sauce was plentiful but began to be a little too much. The portion was just right for one person. Finally, the Tempura Fried Ice Cream was the last dish. The waiter asked if i wanted vanilla or green tea ice cream. I chose the green tea ice cream and it came out within a few minutes. It was interesting because I have never seen a dessert like that. I thought it was delicious so I finished everything on the plate including the whipped cream. Good food here and I wouldn't mind coming back if I wanted sushi and was in the area. Service here was good, too. Check it out!

Great little sushi place. Try the "Love in Cancun" and the "Black Forrest" rolls. A little on the pricey side for what you get, but it is Leawood ;)

I just paid $23 for a meal that took over 30 min to get to my table. The ginger salad dressing was bitter. The sushi (California roll and avocado roll) tasted stale. The rice was pasty. The teriyaki chicken was good though. My server was combative when I mentioned I had waited for over 30 min for my meal. He said I should have ordered a bento box instead. I wouldn't recommend to a friend and don't plan on ever returning.

Far from awesome, this location falls short. Overall 7/10 Atmosphere 8/10 clean and nice Price 8/10 nothing bank breaking here Service 8/10 good and attentive Food 6/10 mediocre I may be a little biased here because I lived in Hawaii, California, and Japan but this place was just mediocre. First thoughts, nice decor. Second thought, nice waiter even if he can't pronounce toro or nigiri correctly. Ordered the spicy temptation roll, toro, and a sweet potato avocado roll. Temptation roll was neither spicy or tempting, toro was decent but not sushi sashimi grade, and potato avocado was decent. Quality, skill in preparing the rice, and taste were all lacking. While I could tell the chefs have made some type of sushi before, it was no where close to that I would expect from a sushi restaurant. However, the prices were cheap. Maybe this is the best Kansas city has to offer. Which makes me a little sad. Can give it a try if a local. If you're used to higher quality sushi, please don't expect that here. This is affordable stuff meant to fill your stomach. Would I come back? Probably not.

The staff is extremely friendly. They provided a number of suggestions. Ultimately, we chose several options to share. Get the 5041 roll. You won't regret it.

Disappointed on pricing. Ordered take out. My coworkers and I picked the place from yelp. I got two pieces of nigiri salmon/sake for $6 usually I get 4 pcs for $8. My coworkers agreed that it was too much for what you got.

  • Justin G.

Great service, fantastic sashimi and reasonably priced. I'll definitely be back. The miso was interesting. Not nearly as salty as I've had before, and it came with a piece of fried tofu instead of regular. A refreshing twist. The seaweed salad was definitely a highlight. Not too sweet, a great tang to it and served on a bed of cucumbers. Also, there was plenty of it. Didn't pay $5 for a tiny bowl. The sashimi lunch comes with 6 pieces. 2 tuna, 2 salmon and 2 yellowtail. Normally I'm not a fan of yellowtail, but this was really dynamite. I fact, all of the sashimi was buttery and practically melted in my mouth. I was in and out of there during a relatively busy time in under 20 minutes. They definitely have their game down.

I was in Overland Park overnight on business last fall and had a free night without customer or coworker dinner. So I hoped on my trusty Yelp mobile app to find a good sushi place near my hotel. This place seemed to be the best option and when I checked out their web page I was surprised to see it was part of the same small chain of Sushi House restaurants which are all located back in the Chicagoland area. I opted for a crazy lobster roll, a summer roll, and a kobacha roll, paired with a Free State altbier like tasted similar to Fat Tire (but better). Normally a Kirin Ichiban is the default sushi pairing but I was happy to see a local brewery selection on draft. The rolls were all excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to visit again when I return to that area.

This place is by far one of the best places I've eaten at for Sushi, was very happy with everything I ordered, everything was delicious, server very friendly and knowledgable, very comfortable surroundings and all around excellent place to go out and eat.

Best sushi place in town!! I've been going here for years and absolutely love it! The fish is the freshest in town and SO much better than RA! The owners and staff are so nice and attentive, it really is a fantastic restaurant. If you want real, fresh sushi that isn't just smothered in mayonnaise to cover the old low quality fish than come here!

  • Joe T.

I was in town for business and was craving some sushi and udon. Thanks to reviews on Yelp, I decided to give this place a try, and I am very glad I did. The sushi was excellent; fresh and tasty. The udon was excellent as well. The service was spot-on. I could say that the tables are reminiscent of a cafeteria and that the food demands more, but I almost would think that I was nit-picking. That's how good everything else was.

Delightful. Quick. Efficient. Friendly. Tasty. Lunch. Cucumber salad and a special roll. Yum.

Don't waste your money or time. Service was good but sushi...not so much. Rolls fell apart...ingredients did not seem fresh...bland comes to mind when I think about the flavor.

The hubby and I stopped by here when our plans in the area were thwarted and we decided to heal ourselves with sushi. We got the Crazy Lobster Roll and the Sashimi Favorites as well as another roll that I cannot recall for the life of me. The Crazy Lobster Roll was very good and the Sashimi Favorites was out of this world! We each had some sort of cocktail special and they had a decent amount of booze, but neither really knocked our socks off in terms of flavor. The service was excellent. Everyone went out of their way to ensure our experience was positive.

Best sushi in Kansas City! Service is consistently excellent and the sushi is high quality and always fresh.

  • Viktoria V.

The food and happy hour menu were good -nothing that stood out though as excellent. The atmosphere was casual and comfortable. However my friend and I had finished our food and paid and stuck around a little longer to chat and the waitress asked us to move to the bar. I could understand if there were patrons waiting but there wasn't. I thought that was a little rude. Service was sub par if best.

Sushi house was AMAZING!!! Stephanie our server recommended the BEST rolls! 5041 Roll AMAZING!! Summer roll (Awesome!) Volcano roll (GREAT!) Great service by our fun server Stephanie and a nice fun enjoyable dinner :-) LOVED IT!

First place in KC that I can vouch for. My wife and I just moved from the Bay Area so we are spoiled when it comes to Sushi. The service was fantastic. Our waitress was extremely friendly and helpful, gave us great suggestions. The fish was very fresh, and the fish-to-rice ratio is excellent. They have lots of fun and flavorful rolls, I can vouch for the KC roll as well as the Dragon roll. Ps pick up their ginger salad dressing, makes any salad at home easy to make and tastes delicious!

This restaurant had great energy but was definitely too small for a personal date. They were overpriced with a limited sushi selection, with subpar combo options available. My husband and I ordered an appetizer, 3 rolls, and 2 sashimi pieces for $50 and left still hungry. Disappointing.

  • Art C.

Food and menu look great. But Sunday night was total chaos. No manager running the show. No one being served. People waiting and hostess harried and out of control. Place was louder than a Led Zepplin concert. Maybe try for late lunch. Maybe

The wait staff here works as a team, everyone helps every table... no matter what the circumstances are... And that makes for good service !!! Food was fresh and the atmosphere casual with a heavy touch of class, lots of happy chatty people can be found here! OH... Almost forgot... UNI ! always in stock and very fresh... !!!

Sushi House is a fairly traditional Japanese restaurant. This is one of the better options for sashimi, sushi and other traditional Japanese cuisine such as Udon and Soba. The fish is mostly fresh, I have encountered mushy Hamachi here but on a regular basis the fish seems to be of high quality. The Udon noodle soup is a great option on a cold fall or winter day. Served with green tea it will really warm you up. The dining room itself is fairly small, try to reserve one of the private Japanese-style booths for a bit more atmosphere.

  • Allen P.

Well, I have to be a dissenting vote on all of the other good ratings. I found service s-l-o-w, the price far out distancing the quality of the sushi and the tables too close together (to make up for a small dining room space), making privacy and noise way out of my tolerance range. Granted I was there on a weekend, but the overall experience was really, really unpleasant for me.

Feisty One and I were craving sushi takeout and we gambled on this. Jackpot! She had two vegetarian rolls and I had the signature lobster roll and spicy tuna--all were incredible. We will definitely be repeat clients here.

KC Restaurant Week Review! Nice selection of rolls on their KCRW menu. I had the Godzilla Roll and the Ebi-Q Roll. I should have gotten the Spicy Temptation Roll. Oh well. My friend had the Black Forest Roll and the Spicy Salmon Roll, better choices than I made. Friendly service, they were packed for lunch on Saturday, glad I made reservations, I think this is the only sushi place doing restaurant week.

What can I say about Sushi House that hasn't already been said? Hmm...I guess the best thing to do is write from the prescriptive of someone who has been spoiled by sushi growing up living in Los Angeles. That being said...the sushi and sashimi at Sushi House definitely meets my lofty standards. Which is actually quite hard to do - if you've ever bought fresh fish from the fish market right of the boat, you'll understand what I mean. My only complaint would be that the rolls aren't as diverse as I'd like - given that it is after all a sushi restaurant. Only two pages of special rolls, not nearly enough as I'm used to. Additionally, a large number of the rolls are made with cooked items and only a limited number have the raw fish that I enjoy on them. The service is remarkable and the overall ambiance is quite nice. I've never been here for dinner, but suspect it would be a similar experience to lunch. Another upside is that both times we've (my co-workers and I) shown up here, either at 11 or 12, the restaurant wasn't busy and we weer seated immediately. Probably because it was during the work week. Has become my go to sushi/sashimi place and will definitely be back!

  • Bloss C.

Great lunch special here, $10 for a vegetarian bento box (Vegetable Tempura, Blanched Spinach with Sesame Dressing and a Cucumber Roll), served with rice and miso soup or salad. I got the salad, but the miso soup looked really good, so go for that. Nice bright décor accomplished with neutral colors, service was friendly and fast. Edamame appetizer was nicely salted.

  • Tabetha J.

Goma ae. That's all I have to say. That was my standout dish for the evening. Delicious. Strange mixed crowd. Traditional looking place. I might have to try it again. The sushi was okay. A bit expensive but, I guess it IS Kansas...

    (3)
  • Amy S.

Decent. A bit overpriced. I'm willing to pay higher prices if the product is worth it, but in this case it wasn't. The spicy tuna was definitely not the best I've ever had. Selection in general wasn't as broad as other places. The salad was good and the mango roll too. Restaurant itself is small and happened to be quite loud with the table of drunk mid40s next to us. All in all not bad, but we won't be back.

    (3)
  • Tod S.

Poke salad is a joke! Really you are going to bring me food in a martini glass which put it at the level of my eyes, not to mention that it isnt mixed and there is no way to mix it? I asked why it was presented this way and all I got was that most people use a fork. Come on man, wtf!?

    (1)
  • Karin G.

Two major red flags: Sushi in a land locked state and in a strip mall... Still AMAZINGLY good sushi! I was really impressed by the freshness of the fish and the great service. Prices were outstanding for this quality as well. Will return when we are back in KC for sure!

I have eaten sushi all over the US and the carribean, and this is still our favorite sushi place. Great rolls every time (and we have been here dozens of times). It depends on what you like, but they introduce new rolls from time to time and it is great to experiement and find new favorites. We have always loved the crazy lobster roll, but the 5041 and the love in cancun are now our favorites. Great food and always great service.

Great Sushi. Highly recommend the Crazy Lobster Roll. Scrimshaw Pilsner was a huge hit also.

Always good! Service is good, timing is good, atmosphere is good, and best of all, the food is good! I am never disappointed. The tempura is WONDERFUL! I love it!! I really love the atmosphere because it reminds me of older restaurants in japan and korea. I loved it. I go back often.

If I lived closer to this sushi place, I might be in trouble! I was recommended to this sushi place by my boyfriend's sister and her boyfriend. To pressure us to go they bought us a gift card, and the sushi is just simply amazing. They have many to pick from, and we have tried quite a few. We have only had the sushi here, and nothing else. The sushi is quite pretty when they serve it, and almost too pretty to eat...ALMOST! The servers are friendly, and the restaurant itself is very clean and has an area that is closed off, which happens to be the formal Japanese seating style ( on the floor, sitting on pillows with the lowered table). The first time my boyfriend and I went we did think it was a little too formal for our casual attire taste. My only complaint it that it is a little pricey. Due to the pricing ( and a little bit to the distance) I'll only go to Sushi House on special occasions.

The Sushi House in Leawood is a small out-of-the-way sushi restaurant that serves some of the best sushi in the metro area. The rolls are expertly crafted and the food is fresh - not sure how they accomplish this here in the mid-west, but they do. Recommendations: Godzilla Roll, Spider Roll, Octopus(Tako), Salmon (Sake) Squid (Ika) Shrimp (Ebi) Tuna (Maguro) The Bento boxes are fun and perhaps a little over priced, but contain really good food - go for the salmon the first time. The service is great and the restaurant, though small, is relaxing and looks great. There is a sushi bar if you like that option. You can reserve one of the three private tables if you have a group of 4 or more. The Sushi House is the only sushi restaurant that I've ever ordered Salad dressing to go. They sell it by the pint - and I buy it every time I go because It is SO GOOD. The best ginger dressing in the city. You get a standard iceberg salad mix from the store and you've got an awesome Japanese Ginger Salad at home. I've tried to reverse engineer this, but have yet to find out what makes this so much better than the others I've had. If you know - please let ME know. I'm never disappointed when I go there, which has been for about 10 years.

  • Nils P.

Restaurant is very clean, and a bit formal. Not the best sushi I have had, nor the cheapest. Ordered catering for a group of 50, and was a bit surprised by the sparse portions -- Mostly because the chef was pretty insistent that we only order sushi -- I asked about some rice or noodle dishes (several times), and he felt it would spoil the meal ... (many in our group filled in the gaps with some leftovers from another meal.) -- most who ate enjoyed it, I was not that impressed.

Yaegaki nigori, not my favorite sake.... But I'll drink it. I put this quick tip up a while ago, but this was really not a good experience, Sushi House is basically a good place to go when you can't afford decent sushi.

  • Beth P.

Best sushi I've had in KC so far. After a decade in SoCal and Las Vegas, I got a little spoiled with good sushi. This was definitely some of the freshest fish I've had since arriving back in the Central Time Zone. The special roll tonight- I forget the name, but it was crab and cream cheese and something, topped with salmon and tuna- was excellent. Everything was great. Probably the priciest rolls I've come across in KC, but still not frightening (especially when, once again, you're used to Vegas sushi places and the prices that you can find on the Strip).

I don't dislike Sushi House, but I don't love it. I compare it to Ra considering its location and restaurant type. I like Sushi House for the quiet of the restaurant. I went for a lunch meeting with a client and it was perfect for that. I had gone to Ra the week before and could not hear a word my colleague was saying so Sushi House serves for a better lunch meeting space. The service was OK but was kind of slow for being a lunch period during the week, but our drinks were always full so that is a plus. When it comes to the sushi/food itself I would give it a "B". I have had better, but it wasn't bad either and there was a lot of it. If you are walking by and need some food then this place will do the trick.

This is by far one of the best sushi places. The food is always incredibly fresh and delicious. The wait staff is friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is cozy. The Crazy Lobster Roll is a staple.

I'm new to sushi, but have to say that I LOVED the sushi here! I had the Baja roll and the Dragon roll. Both were amazing (and I took half of each home to eat for dinner!). I also had the seaweed salad, which was nice, light and very tasty! My only issue was that it was extremely hot in the restaurant, which made it difficult to enjoy the atmosphere.

  • Emily F.

Overpriced food and too small I felt like I was eating with the people next to me. The food was good but the seafood salad I ordered came in a martini glass and work too eat it for 24 bucks for lunch I left hungry!

I really like Sushi House - the quality if the food is great, the prices are reasonable and the service has always been top notch! I highly recommend eating here.

This is my favorite place to go in overland park for sushi. I love the seaweed salad, the Black Forest Roll, Dragon Roll, Unagi Roll, and Spicy Tuna Roll. Wash it all down with a Kirin or green tea. This place doesn't use imitation crab like some sushi places do to scrimp on the cost. They give you a hot towel and have excellent service. I will continue to be a regular here.

    (5)
  • Nikki H.

So yummy! It is a nice, intimate restaurant with such a nice staff. What I loved about this place was, of course, the sushi! By far, the best in KC. The pieces are appropriate sized (not oversized pieces that you couldn't possibly eat in one bite like some places). I recommend the fried dumplings and spicy temptation roll. Amazing! I will definitely be coming back!

  • Suzanne W.

My husband and I have been wanting to eat here for quite sometime. My only regret is it took to long for us to try it. We had the miso soup which was out of this world. It had a lot of flavor without being overbearing. The Fried dumplings (i believe that is what we order) were flavorful hot and crispy. The sauce that accompanied them was excellent but very citrusy. Now to review the sushi, I have live on both coasts in Southern California and NY, NY. So it is difficult to impress me with sushi but the sushi house far exceeded any expectations I had for Sushi in the midwest. Their signature Crazy Lobster roll was a new experience for me it was tempura fried crab with cream cheese and radish sprouts in Soy paper instead of seaweed with a touch of Sriracha. The California rolls were good and fresh. Lastly the the Summer roll was an excellent alternative to our usual purchase of the Spicy Tuna Roll. It again was fresh and well wrapped. I would highly recommend this restaurant the prices are extremely reasonable for the quality of food.

This place is some of the best sushi I have had in Kansas City. The servers are generally friendly and know their stuff (I have only had one ever who didn't recognize the Japanese names of each roll). When you sit down they give you a hot towel to 'cleanse' your hands. I would say wash, but that's a stretch. No soap=no wash. I digress.... It also has a very pleasant environment. Highly Recommended.

My favorite sushi establishment in overland park. Haven't been here long but have tried a few other places and this by far is the one i'll recommend.

Let me begin by saying I have worked in the food industry and understand some of the issues that arise at times. I also rarely complain of such things. My girlfriend and I used OpenTable for a 7:15 reservation recently. We arrived and were sat promptly. We waited 15 minutes before being greeted by a server and having our drink orders taken. I ordered two salmon rolls and my girlfriend ordered two as well. 4 quick sushi rolls should take no problem at all. We waited 30 MINUTES for our food to even arrive. The waitress ignored our table except to refill water. She never discussed why it was taking so long or offered any apology. It was pretty clear she couldn't care less either way. Two minutes before we were going to walk out, the food arrived. We received zero table attention other than a quick "how is the food" while filling up our water. Maybe the waitress was having a bad day but she didn't even bother to fake having any concern for her job. Not only was the service bad but the food took forever and the atmosphere of the restaurant is unappealing. Between the tight seating, the mix of 80s pop and gangsta rap music in the background, and the so-so food I will never go back.

Very tasty and very nice inside. Everything is very clean, wait staff was excellent, and very friendly. I had a couple of rolls (Godzilla and Spicy Temptation) and they were both excellent. Alyssa was my server and she made excellent recommendations. Many thanks for a great experience!

Is Sushi House under new management? The staff, food, service wasn't the same. I've been to Sushi House periodically in the last couple years and never had issues. I came in on a Fri night at 6:30pm..... Wait time: Expected per hostess:10 min. Actual: ~30 min....Which was fine since I wasn't terribly hungry. When our table of 3 was ready. The hostess POINTED to our table to sit down. She never walked us there so we sat there without a menu until random workers gave us water, menu, hot towel awhile later.... We waited for what felt like forever and our server never acknowledged us until we sat around waiting to order. Food: Sashimi- salmon was buttery. Yellowtail- I had to spit out. It had a texture of a half thawed out frozen fish, hard n crunchy for sashimi? Not fresh and fishy taste. Tuna- It laid against the yellowtail therefore the smell turned me off when I bit into the tuna. Besides the sashimi we ordered spicy tuna roll which was so fishy we could only eat one. I have never been so disappointed in a 'sushi' restaurant out of all the places I've been to in the city and every other city in the U.S. I have also never spit out any kind of sashimi....EVER. Service: Lacking. We had the Asian server who was also working the sushi bar. He came to take our order then asked us how our food was when he gave us our bill. That's it. The other servers in the restaurant seem to be tending to their customers quite well. It was our server who was lacking in customer service. This isn't Japan or a coastline city where the fish is super fresh but I have always thought that Sushi House was up there with a good quality grade of sashimi. This visit was disappointing. I left with an empty stomach and having to give out a poor tip...

My favorite sushi joint in KC metro area, fresh and nicely appointed. I typically enjoy the sashimi combo, always delightful. :)

For KC sushi, come here. Met my sisters and Mom here (who are regulars) for my first time and they ordered for me for the most part. Happy hour specials are priced well and the oriental pearl roll was my favorite in that category. Also ordered the Crazy Lobster Roll (after hh ended) which lived up to it's name. Atmosphere is my favorite. Love the private rooms--whatever the Japanese name for those are. Cozy.

I love sushi and this place is very good, but I struggle to give 5 stars given how expensive the items are. We had the shrimp and vegetable tempura for an appetizer, which was quite delicious, but I was almost nervous to order an appetizer at all seeing the menu prices. We did order a couple drinks but after the app and 3 sushi rolls I was looking at a $70+ bill. Maybe that's normal for nice sushi but I don't remember paying that much when I've had it in the past. Still recommend.

This little place is super chic! Love the décor and the fixtures. I would much rather eat in a nicer place AND get good food. It's worth the extra few bucks, in my opinion. My server got my order mixed up and brought me the wrong roll and I can't remember what I ended up with. He offered to fix it immediately and apologized. That being said my mystery roll was great! And something I wouldn't have ordered myself however I was very pleasantly surprised. The calamari was also delicious!

After living in Los Angeles for a couple years, I was spoiled with great sushi prepared by skilled Japanese chefs. The prospect of finding something comparable was starting to look bleak until my husband and I stumbled into Sushi House. I was surprised to find the place so busy, but that's often a good sign in a sushi bar. The service was attentive and friendly and the food was fantastic! We started with the baked mussels which were tasty and unlike the baked mussels you get most other places in KC, overcooked and drenched in mayo sauce. I had hamachi (yellowtail) and Tasmanian sake (salmon) sashimi and while the quality and freshness of the fish was pretty good, it wasn't the the best I've ever had. We also had the Crazy Lobster Roll - highly recommended! After reading the menu I half expected to get a tacky, over-stuffed roll drenched in sauce, but was delightfully surprised by the tasteful execution and beautiful presentation of this deliciously divine creation. The price is high enough that my budget won't allow me visit as often as I'd like (every day), but you get what you pay for at Sushi House.

The decor is nice and the staff was awesome. I will not go out of my way to go there again, but I was glad I tried it out. 3 out of 4 of my dishes were great, but the tuna used in the tuna roll was subpar. I had to cover it in wasabi and soy sauce to get through it. Other than that, everything was nice.

I never had Sushi in the Midwest and frankly for the location of this restaurant, it was pretty damn good. I was expecting American versions of Sushi like the the Burger Roll,Pizza Roll or Fried Butter Twinkie roll but this restaurant stayed authentic!!! Their Beef Negamaki is to DIE FOR! I would KILL to be there again. I also tried their "Leawood" Roll which was pretty interesting and innovative. The food was pretty damn cheap since I'm a visitor from NYC. PS: Bento boxes and California rolls are great but nobody in Japan eats that. Trust me I have a Ph.D in asain-y food and plastic surgery to look like them. PPS: The waiters were Chinese.

Tried carryout from here and was very pleased with the sushi! It is a bit pricier than other sushi places in the area but the service was great even for a call-in order. The Shiromi Ten Roll is amazing!

Have been to most of the sushi restaurants in town, esp the well known places and I have to say that after coming here many times, Sushi House (in my opinion) is the best sushi in KC. Their fish is very fresh, they have a great selection of rolls and their customer service is all around the best in KC! The owner is frequently in the restaurant, makes it a habit of ensuring the customers are taken care of and after a couple of times in, he recognizes you and makes an effort to stop by your table and chat (rare these days). I disagree with the other reviews that this place is expensive! If you are comparing to your run of the mill, strip mall "all you can eat" cheap sushi places, then yes, it's expensive. But if you want quality sushi prepared by experienced sushi chefs that is fresh, this place is very appropriately priced. Especially compared to any tier 1 city like LA, NYC, San Fran, etc. The edamame is always fresh and cooked to perfection. Our fav rolls include the Spicy Temptation, Tropical Roll, and Volcano Roll (heaven in your mouth; a def must). Something we always do is order a special roll that includes tuna, yellowtail, shrimp, avocado and wasabi tobiko. They have no prob making it for us every time and you don't have to argue or explain it 7 times for them to make it. They also have a nice sake selection and the wait staff is very knowledgeable; your glass is always full and they seem to anticipate your every need. Def a great place to take a date or just go for some casual dining. We get take out from here on a regular basis and it's just as good as eating in. Again, if you're looking for run of the mill, cheap sushi, don't come here. If you want a quality experience, fresh fish and outstanding service, this is your place!

Great local place for some very fresh sushi. Ordered a california roll with king crab and one of the rolls off of the menu (with mango) and was not disappointed. Everything was very good quality and made perfectly. I was surprised that I could find such fresh sushi so far away from the ocean! I'd highly recommend checking this place out if you are looking for a low-key sushi place that offers a full bar.

I absolutely love this place. Sushi House is definitely the best sushi place I have ever been to. I absolutely love the spicy crab salad amazing flavor to start off with as an appetizer. I always get the spicy temptation roll after the crab salad which is topped with slices of mango and contains shrimp tempura. The flavor here is amazing. I am not a fan of any sushi roll with cream cheese I think it drowns out the flavor, but they have a huge selection of food even if your not a fan of sushi. I would highly recommend this place and I would tell anyone to try the spicy crab salad and temptation roll!

Sushi House used to be my Cheers- where everybody knew my name. I loved this restaurant and every Sunday for several years my rear was filling a booth and a Tropical Roll was filling my tummy. New owners saved the restaurant from certain financial demise, but, along the way they made some personnel changes. All but one of my favorite familiar chefs and servers left one-by-one. So now I'm hit or miss in the restaurant. I still only go on Sundays because I know Tuan will be there - he is, by far, the best and most consistent of the chefs - but I no longer go every Sunday. I miss my old people. Being a sushi chef takes precision and skill, it's an art and I can tell when someone else is behind the counter creating my dish. Right now rolls aren't as consistent in size and cut - but, hopefully, the rest of the chefs get there. All that said, Sushi House is still my favorite sushi restaurant in KC. Their fish seems fresher than anyone else in the area. I find the décor pleasing and I don't feel like I'm at a JoCo meat market like the place up the street - watching cougars drink cosmos and look desperate to hook up by the end of the night. My husband and I ate there on Sunday, March 4, and enjoyed a new but friendly face as our server. We usually order the Sushi Deluxe, subbing a Tropical Roll for the standard that comes with that dish and then adding a Crazy Lobster Roll. This time they were having a special as advertised on Facebook, so we decided to try a couple of new rolls. In addition to their food, Sushi House makes their ginger ale in house, so I usually enjoy a glass or two. At Sushi House I also like: Salmon skin roll, Rainbow Roll, Leawood Roll, Gyoza (fried dumplings), Edamame All-in-all, our meal was good. Will I go back? Of course, Sushi House is still one of my favorite places to eat on the South side.

Sushi House is one of the better sushi places I've found. I'm saying that only based on a lunch I'd eaten there with a friend. It's a smallish and somewhat upscaleish sushi place in the Town Center shopping plaza.(EEK!) But if you're looking for good sushi in the area, don't fear the masses and head to this place. I ordered the bento box for lunch which was more than I expected and the seaweed crab salad was the best part of it all. Will I go back? maybe. Would I pay more than I did for lunch? No.

Nice environment and good service. A little on the pricey side, but good food. Crazy music, they played "meeting in the ladies room" my Klymaxx. Very japanese of them, playing 80's and 90's. I'll come back when my wallet is feeling a little heavy for sure!

Yes, it is in a strip mall, but so are 80% of the restaurants in Johnson County. Luckily, the strip mall fades away once you walk in the door. The inside is sleek with blonde wood, glass and doors with 3-form inserts. There are even a few private dining areas hidden behind screens. The sushi is the best I have had in this part of town and I really feel like the owner cares about your experience.

My one big problem with the mid west: can I trust seafood around here? I really can't abadon my common sense and ignore all my sushi rules. 1. There is no ocean in 25 miles radius. I live in like the armpit of America=no sushi for me 2.The guy at the sushi bar does not speak Japanese = don't trust him 3. The server looks at me weird when I order in Japanese = very questionable What choice do I have? Not eat Japanese food? IMPOSSIBLE! Should I give up my sushi snob rules? This is a sad moment. 1st time: I did not order sashimi (god forbid!) and stuck with some cooked items the first time I went. -hamachi kama -sunomono salad -rolls: some cooked and some... well, i took a risk and got STR- spicy tuna roll 2nd time: I had salmon skin roll. Now I really know they are not Japanese. It was ALL WRONG. I also had spicy yellowtail roll. Now, I've lost all rights to go back to Sasabune. I think when I return there, the Sushi Nazi will throw me out. I am no longer worthy of his sushi... sake choices: not too shabby I guess I should just start counting down my next visit to CA or NY. Til then, I'll be eating a lot of cooked Japanese food. Some one come save me from my missouri (misery). side note: my uncle used to work here when he lived here for a lil bit. I kinda trust him so I guess in a way it's as good as it gets around here (insert a really dissapointed/teary/frustrated/angry face here).

Holy smokes, this place is legit! It doesn't look like much on the outside but once you open the door and step foot you are welcomed with a hot towel and a truly authentic Japanese experience. Tell me that's not hardcore! When it comes time to whip out the chop sticks and start chowing down on some sushi like a boss, your mouth is welcomed with an explosion of awesomeness. Eat at this place brah!

One of my favorite Sushi places. I highly recommend the Spicy crab salad (it's not REALLY a salad, so don't be afraid non salad eaters). It's amazing and like crack... I need that stuff. I eat there 1-2 times a week and the staff is always helpful and kind. The sushi is always consistent and damn impressive for land locked Kansas..

We ate here on a Saturday afternoon at about 2:00 p.m. We had our toddler daughter with us. Food - 3.5-4 stars. My husband's dragon roll and lobster roll was beautiful and delicious. I am not going to complain about the $9 and $12 that each roll cost because it was worth it. I had the chicken teriyaki bento box because I love the variety that comes with that meal. Tempura vegetables and shrimp and my California roll were delicious, however, the chicken itself was dry and not very flavorful -- I think it could have been marinated a little more. Service - 4 stars. We were greeted immediately by the host, given crayons and a kid's menu and our server was on top of things. Ambience - 3 stars. Nothing to write home about, but it was just fine for a late lunch meal. We haven't had sushi in the KC area since eating some pretty bad stuff at the Kona Grill in the Plaza a couple of years ago. I didn't feel like eating at a chain restaurant at the Leawood Towne Center and was excited about eating sushi, so this place worked for me.

Worst sushi experience ever, hands down, period, end of story. Wife and I LOVE sushi and had been here once before. It was good, no problems. This time was a totally different experience. We walked in and were seated. Waiter comes and takes our order, leaves and never comes back! We placed an order for 3 sushi rolls, nothing special. ANYWHERE else can make those in 5 minutes or less. AN HOUR later wife and I just decided to get up and leave and miraculously our rolls shows up with the shift manager and more lies than Jim and Tammy Faye Baker. She told us one person didn't show up. I told her no problem, I understand that happens but don't just leave me to sit in their VERY cramped dining room for an hour with nothing. After the hour had lapsed and she brought the rolls, she still had the audacity to say she would give us 50% off our meal !! Big friggin' whoop! Any other sushi house on the planet could have whipped our order out in 5 minutes or less but not this place. On top of all this, it's REALLY cramped up in the dining room. I got very tired over the hour we were just sitting there having to listen to everyone else's conversations because you are sitting so close together. Atmosphere here is terrible. Never, never, never, ever again going back !

Wow, either the other reviews were submitted by the owners or I am the only one that actually ate sushi here that wasn't fried, covered in sauce, etc... I had the sashimi lunch and it was hands down the worse sushi I have ever had. Four day old supermarket sushi in a prepackaged box is better than this. If you go here make sure you get something cooked and covered in sauce or anything else you can do to save yourself from eating the worse raw fish you will ever put in your month.

One of the best sushi/Japanese places in the KC area, IMO. Located in Leawood's Town Center, it is on the pricey side. But the quality of food is consistently high and, I think, worth the price. The rolls at Sushi House are excellent. Among the better ones are: Spicy Temptation Roll - Shrimp tempura and fresh mango inside, with fresh spicy mango sauce Crazy Lobster Roll - lobster tempura, cream cheese, radish sprouts, spicy mayo, and sriracha wrapped in soy paper. Godzilla Roll - shrimp tempura, wasabi tobiko, cream cheese, crunchy tempura, wasabi mayonnaise sauce, and cucumber. The non-sushi items are also excellent. The soba and udon come in hearty, large portions, and the bento boxes are also good-sized. The grilled fish on the dinner menu is always impeccably prepared. Service is what you'd expect in Rich Suburb Land -- excellent. The dining room is small, but the sushi bar is long. Weeknights are fairly quiet, but lunch tends to be noisy. And since it's right around the corner from the Sprint corporate HQ, be ready for lots of corporate chatter and phone ringing at lunchtime. I usually go early (11:15-ish) to gape at the wine-drinking Leawood housewives who usually clear out of the bar before lunch. Another plus, Sushi House has two small traditional Japanese style dining booths, which can be reserved for groups of up to six or so.

One of our very favorite places! The volcano roll is unique - heated and savory. Crunchy and Saigon rolls are two of our go-to choices, too. Service is always friendly and knowledgeable and we are amazed at the consistency of the food - always fresh and delicious. Tom, the owner, truly appreciates his customers and we appreciate fine food, service and value. By the way, the Missus enjoys the pulled pork Bento box (I know, pulled pork at a sushi restaurant, but believe me, it's terrific!) - my lunch choice has often been the tempura bento - veggies are fresh, tender and expertly prepared and the shrimp is amazing. Shrimp often gets overcooked in the midwest, but not here - Sushi House knows their stuff!

I defy anyone to find better sushi in the Kansas City area. Service can be spotty, the atmosphere a little quiet for some, it is not cheap but the food is consistently the best. I like the friendly personal feel but keep coming back for the food. Spicy Lobster Roll is fantastic.

The Sushi house in town Center plaza is some of the best sushi in Kansas City. Every time I go, I get the seaweed salad and the dragon roll, fantastic! The Sushi House has a bar with seating and if you have a big enough group, they have private rooms, where you can take your shoes off and dive even deeper into the authenticity of a real sushi restaurant. Careful going during weekday lunch hours, it gets very busy!

I've been here many times for lunch and dinner. Always great service, never rushed, very fresh fish. I've never had a bad or mediocre experience. My lunch today prompted me to write this review. Probably the best place in KC or sushi or Japanese food overall.

I visited here in Jan 2007. Normally you won't think you can find a nice place for sushi in the suburb of Kansas City, but Sushi House is a nice surprise. Sushi house has 5 locations so far with 4 of them in Illinois and1 in Kansas. This one is located in the Town Center Plaza, a brand new outdoor mall, south of Kansas City in the neighborhood of Overland Park, one of the best places for living in the US. Other than tables, booth and sushi bar, the Sushi House also has 3 small private rooms with tatami. The menu is very standard and they do offer wines in addition to Sake. One thing I like the most about this place is the fish are very fresh and the portions are very generics. I ordered the Sushi & Sashimi Combo, the tuna, salmon and whitefish sashimi slices are large and thick compare to some other sushi restaurants. Also, the green tea ice cream is a ball with about 3" in diameter for only $3. I normally see scoop size ice cream for more than $3 at other places. Service is good, and the restaurant is kept clean all the time.

I am a fairly new (within the last year) fan of sushi, quickly turning into an obsessed fan of it, so I've been trying new sushi places around town. This is my 5th place I've tried, and I was impressed. Sushi House is a nice, clean, friendly place with excellent sushi. Located at Town Center in Leawood. Once you get inside, you forget you're in a suburb center strip mall type of place. I had the Spicy Temptation Roll, which was one of the best rolls I've had. The sweet sauce and spicy flavors work well together. The fish was very tasty. I had the tuna, yellowtail, salmon, and a few others. Om nom nom.

This place was small but ohh so good. I'm a sushi freak so I was delightfully surprised at the quality and presentations of their rolls. Their bento boxes are really good as well. Try the rolls with mango...it reminded me of sushi in in the tropics. Although I yet to see someone attempt a sushi roll with plantains. I've been to Nara and this little place in the middle of Suburbia was way better. Everyone complains about eating sushi in the midwest but listen up from a person who comes of land with two oceans (Rep of Panama) as long as its not fishy tasting or sticky, its all good. I was impressed thats why Sushi House gets 5 stars. If you want a private room call in early to reserve a spot, each room fits 6.

Terrific sushi, service, and atmosphere! I am much more of a nigiri guy these days but I have to say that the rolls here are phenomenal. Especially the Lobster Roll. Absolute dynamite, worth every penny. This is not your typical hole-in-the-wall sushi operation with a bunch of guys who not only work but live in the restaurant. The staff is gracious, attractive, and professional. Without a doubt this is the best sushi in KC. My selfish wish (sorry Tom), is that they had a location in the Northland . . . no good sushi in the Northland!

I am moving to the KC area so on my last exploring trip my goal was to find a good sushi place. I have lived on East and West coasts and am a big sushi lover - I didn't know what quality sushi I would get smack in the middle of the country. I used Yelp and found sushi house and gave it a try for lunch alone one day. Inside is nicety decorated, good layout, and friendly staff. I started with the cucumber salad. Great dressing, I wished it was fresher - the cucumbers were a little soggy. I then tried the rainbow roll, unagi, and a spicy crab hand roll (figured I would play it safe the first time). Unagi was excellent. The rainbow roll had a lot of cucumbers inside and they took over the flavor. I asked for the crab hand roll with no cucumbers for that reason and they didn't leave them off. It was good - not great, but good. Fish was fresh but not the best quality - not sure how great their sashimi would be.

I was able to join some friends from Dallas and KC for dinner. Sushi was the targeted fixation and I had no quarrels with that. We met up, hopped in the car and drove....and drove. It reminded me a bit of being back in Dallas, having to drive to everything, even to get the newspaper in your driveway. Any how, we ended up in Leawood (ok, the drive wasn't long at all, but, you know...) and pulled up to the fine establishment Sushi House in all its suburban glory. Step inside and you immediately forget you are parked in a strip mall surrounded by people schlepping Baby Pottery Barn shopping bags. Large bottles of yummy Kirin Lager and a steamy bowl of edamame started us off while looking over the expansive and creative menu. We started ordering like kings, though when our order arrived it looked more like we worked for The United Nations World Food Programme loading a ship with emergency stuffs bound for Burma. Is gloutney a sin? Then please forgive me. This was a feast. Standouts: the Tazmanian Sake salmon - pale red and buttery; the Hotategai with sweet, raw scallop and a spicy finish; and my old standby, the Spider Roll, with soft-shell crab, avocado, cucumber and smelt roe. Result: I skipped breakfast this morning. Sushi House, I like you a lot.

The menu isn't the most extensive we've seen, but the rolls we ordered were well made and tasty. The tables were a little tight and the restaurant can get loud when it's full. Otherwise, it was a decent experience.

Our family has gone to Sushi House for many years. It was not a surprise when our daughter said she wanted to go there for her 13th birthday. We ordered our usual drinks, variety of sushi rolls, shrimp tempura and albacore. The food was delicious until the last roll we encountered had a long black hair 'rolled' into it. Needless to say the evening was over. The waiter quickly took the plate away to show the manager etc. The owner happened to be there that evening, and came in to offer his apologies stating this type of thing had never happened before and indicated he would remove that roll from our bill. Well.... our family of five easily spends about $150 there and he was able to take off a $5 sushi roll (not even the correct one). Nothing is more unappealing than finding hair in your food and a lack of regard by management for wanting to make it right for the customer. While the food has always been delicious, our next $150 will be spent finding another sushi restaurant.

Disappointed on pricing. Ordered take out. My coworkers and I picked the place from yelp. I got two pieces of nigiri salmon/sake for $6 usually I get 4 pcs for $8. My coworkers agreed that it was too much for what you got.

Goma ae. That's all I have to say. That was my standout dish for the evening. Delicious. Strange mixed crowd. Traditional looking place. I might have to try it again. The sushi was okay. A bit expensive but, I guess it IS Kansas...

  • Amy S.

Overpriced food and too small I felt like I was eating with the people next to me. The food was good but the seafood salad I ordered came in a martini glass and work too eat it for 24 bucks for lunch I left hungry!

  • Nikki H.

  • Hannah M.

Great sushi!!! the kids love the mochi ice cream. We sit in one of the rooms or most of the time at the sushi bar we have always had good service and we have been their several times. This is one of our favorite sushi places in town.

I will return! Again and again. Customer service and sushi quality is high. Busy but they kept my drink filled and needs met. Next time I will get a private room.

No.

Om nom nom.

Food and menu look great. But Sunday night was total chaos. No manager running the show. No one being served. People waiting and hostess harried and out of control. Place was louder than a Led Zepplin concert. Maybe try for late lunch. Maybe

    (3)

Goma ae. That's all I have to say. That was my standout dish for the evening. Delicious. Strange mixed crowd. Traditional looking place. I might have to try it again. The sushi was okay. A bit expensive but, I guess it IS Kansas...

No.

Poke salad is a joke! Really you are going to bring me food in a martini glass which put it at the level of my eyes, not to mention that it isnt mixed and there is no way to mix it? I asked why it was presented this way and all I got was that most people use a fork. Come on man, wtf!?

Cozy.

My favorite sushi joint in KC metro area, fresh and nicely appointed. I typically enjoy the sashimi combo, always delightful. :)

Great sushi!!! the kids love the mochi ice cream. We sit in one of the rooms or most of the time at the sushi bar we have always had good service and we have been their several times. This is one of our favorite sushi places in town.

Very nice atmosphere, great quality fish, the seaweed salad and other sunomono salads are amazing, great sake selection and a wonderful array of rolls besides the nigiri options. We were impressed! We sat at the sushi bar, the best place in our opinion!

I am a business traveler, and while away each week, I usually manage to hit this sushi bar up. The staff is friendly, the sushi is inventive and well made. For a strip mall sushi house, this place is impressive.
