Blue Koi is just a few blocks from my house so I come here on a regular basis, in my opinion it is the best noodle and dumping shop in KC. Blue Koi is almost as good as the noodle and dumpling shops in Asia, which is a huge compliment! The Spicy Wontons are a must-do, everyone loves these and I typically order more for the table since the demand is high... The Lettuce wraps are pretty good too, nothing overly special but a solid appetizer... The pan fried dumpling are good, althought most people wish they had just ordered more Spicy Wontons... The noodle soups are all pretty darn good... Karen's special soup is not on the menu but it is a simple dish made of spicy pork broth, noodles and veggies... When I am in Asia on business, I live off of noodle soup. Karen's special is simple and delicious, just like I would find in a noodle shop in Hong Kong! You can't go wrong here, my only complaint is that somehow my tab always comes to about $50 for lunch for 2... Seems pricey for noodles and dumplings but the price doesn't keep me from coming back so I can't complain too much...

Blue Koi, I like you. What is there to say... quite a bit, but I can easily summarize it by saying great food, good service, and slightly high prices. If you haven't tried Blue Koi then it is certainly worth a shot. There isn't a place I know of in KC like it except the original Blue Koi in Westport which is equally as good. I personally like the dumplings (pan-fired), Chicken or Tofu with Black Bean Sauce, Chicken with Chinese Curry Sauce, and Cantonese Roast Duck. The food is cooked very well and always has been enjoyable. I like interior with its trendy styles and art. I will say the prices a bit high but the experience is worth it. Summary: * Great food * Very good service. I have yet to have a "shifty" or bad experience * Nice inside that is interesting and inviting * Prices are a tad steep. Oh well, keeps my wife and I from frickin' eating here too often. Keep in mind, the quality is good

This is like the clean upscale version of the 39th location. Here, you have the option of sitting outside and there is actually parking! Of course, the dumplings are still phenomenal! We did the pan fried shrimp dumplings, because I love that little extra texture. We also got a side of the amazing, flavor packed "awesome sauce", which I basically put on everything. I ordered my favorite entree, the "Fire Bird", which I could eat every single week. The portions are huge and there are always two meals in every entree. WE had a young server. He was a little quirky, but he was always there for anything we needed. Blue Koi is located in the Mission Farms shopping complex which is great if you want to walk around a bit before dinner. Yay! Blue Koi!

enjoyed dinner with a couple of friends here on a quiet Wednesday. we started with the crispy tofu and it was yummy (especially since two of us really aren't tofu fans). for dinner I had the Shanghai Wonton Noodle Soup and it was a perfect combination of noodles and wontons (which were delicous). even though it wasn't very heavy, it was a HUGE portion and I had plenty leftover for lunch the next day. what I enjoyed most about our experience is that we closed the place down and they didn't try to rush us at all. it's a good, relaxing, comfort-food place!

Horrible, simply horrible. I first experienced Blue Koi when I went for lunch with a few of my coworkers. To say that the food was bad is putting it lightly. I've had better Asian food of a truck. My friend ordered the wonton soup - I never thought that wonton soup could be that badly made. There was so much oil floating on the broth that it was quite unappetizing. Additionally, after sampling the dish I was utterly disgusted. The broth tasted of oil and flour, and the wontons weren't even cooked all the way through. In fact I would venture a guess and say they were frozen. I ordered the curry, and it was so loaded with sugar that I couldn't taste anything else. I can understand adding sugar to a curry dish to enhance flavors, but enough to drown the dish? Simply unthinkable. Lastly, I had ordered the lettuce wraps and asked for no peanuts. Now to be fair I'm not allergic, however one would assume that when someone asks for no peanuts it means no peanuts across the board, nuts, oil, butter, etc. When I received my dish, I could clearly taste the peanut oil. It's a lucky thing that I'm not allergic to peanuts because that could have been a serious problem. Overall, the meal was not good. In fact, I left feeling quite nauseated and uncomfortable. I expected more from the meal given how much I paid for my lunch. Instead I was miserably disappointed and left feeling quite sick. The only redeeming factor was the service. However, even that isn't enough for me to return here.

Family of 5 - two vegetarians. Everyone LOVED it. Appetizer wraps kicks PF Chang butt any time, must try. Don't miss Crispy tofu with awesome sauce. Any main dish get with their noodles, very fresh , soft and unique . This was the best eat during our two weeks vacation. Very carefully given 5 stars keeping food, ambience, service & overall experience in mind.

Well this was an awesome experience. Although we got there at right around 8ish we had to wait about 20 minutes to get a seat at the bar, so it was busy but they weren't unable to handle the crowd which is always pleasant to see. The bar was a bit cramped at first but then the place thinned out a bit so it was fine. Our server and the barkeep were able and to do the basics very well and they were attentive and timely with all requests. We watched the cooks work themselves pretty well when they were busy, but it was cool to have the kitchen be viewable behind the bar. The food was delightful and while the place was a bit more crowded than I liked, it was very good. The food was delicious, I had the Cantonese Duck Soup which was extraordinary. A mild soup with perfectly cooked duck meat. I added a bit of the Asian hot sauce to it and the kick was perfect. Only minor quibble would be the skin on the duck meat would have been better crispy or removed because the bit of fat on it was a little off on the texture front. However this is a minor quibble about preference. Overall everything was nice and the variety and flavors and menu choices are awesome. I had a great experience there. FYI the bathrooms are immaculately kept a big ++++

I had the Fire Duck and got it over noodles per the recommendation of the server. I don't feel that the noodles added much to the dish compared to rice. I ended up mostly picking through to eat the excellent Fire Duck and avoided the filler noodles. I also got the spring rolls and thought they were very good and well priced.

The Blue Koi is in my opinion it is the best noodle and dumping shop in KC. The Spicy Wontons are a must-do, I order for you if you're meeting me there. I do not consider them that spicy. My company today says he likes spicy, but he said he almost started to sweat today. I do not find them that spicy, but quite delicously flavorful. The pan fried dumplings are good, but go for the Spicy Wontons, seriously! I could eat the fire duck or ants on a tree anytime. Trouble is that I usually end up there on a day like today and can't stay away from the Meat Wonton Soup. I know Wontons for appetizer and Wontons for meal. I love their Wontons and noodles. Suck it up! If you're into Bubble Tea you should try it. I am not. So the Dragonwell for me. I have only been to this location twice. I usually go the first location at 39th. Both are offering the same menu and just as good as when I started coming here 12 years ago.

I've been going to Blue Koi for about 7 years now, and I can't say enough about it. The service is always great, the food is exceptional and the environment is always fun. I go to this particular Blue Koi on a weekly basis - I can't get enough of it. My recommendations: Split the entree. Their serving sizes are huuuuge! If you're going to split an entree, it definitely leaves room in your tummy and in your budget to try the dumplings. (I love the pan fried chicken dumplings!) The Chinese Style Pot Roast is TO DIE FOR. If you're going on your own or can't find a partner to agree on what you want, I would recommend asking the server to box up half of your meal before they bring it out. They are always happy to do so when I ask. This is my go-to spot every week for a nice meal and a good glass of wine.

We got: The Fire Bird (Duck) - The duck and sauce (the perfect level of spice) was quite delicious, but the bamboo was very fibrous and tough which was disappointing since I love bamboo. Although I wish they didn't put 5 lbs of scallions that I had to pick out in order to eat... China Moon - Came highly recommended, but is basically a Chinese version of a quesadilla but more deep fried with only water chestnut and shrimp in the middle. Overly greasy and a bit flavorless for my taste. Came with a sweet dipping sauce (which I dislike in general) and the awesome sauce (sort of a sweet and spicy sauce; didn't really float my boat either), but I feel it might have been good less greasy and with a spicy mayo. Shrimp and Pork Dumplings (pan fried) - Very forgettable. Not horrible, but not really worth getting either... Overall portions were average size. It'd be worth coming back for the Fire Bird, but nothing else stood out that we had or that I saw on the menu.

Was thrilled that Blue Koi made it across the state line to join us on the Kansas side. All the same delicious food and great service you can expect from the Westport/39th St. location. Tons of vegetarian options - I recommend the crispy tofu with spicy awesome sauce, spicy chili garlic vegetarian wontons, vegetarian dumplings, tofu w/ black bean sauce and noodles, vegan mix Ants on a Tree, and several other items. (The Vegetarian Lettuce Wrap is good too, just not my thing, and Vegan Delights did not delight me.) Enjoy their teas and fun desserts, as well. One of the best vegetarian options in the area.

I'd like to rate this place a 3.5 because I wouldn't feel right putting a 4, but 3 feels kind of mean of me. That said, its probably closer to a 3 than a four, so here goes: My partner and I had eaten at the original Blue Koi for quite a while and had always been impressed with it, save for a few small issues. Well, it turns out that the Leawood also suffers from some of the same issues. First, the meat in their dishes is INCREDIBLY fork tender but the noodles they serve it in/on are so phenomenally overcooked that you can't typically even separate them. Your only option is to sort of scrape a big mushy pile away and eat it almost like mashed potatoes. The flavor is great, but if you're not into noodles cooked so long they're almost liquid, order rice...trust me there. The other is that if anyone else remembers when there was only one Blue Koi...the menu was smaller and the ingredients weren't as hip and trendy, the dishes were basically bulletproof. Unfortunately either times have changed and they've started modifying a few dishes, or they're trying to make things seem much more complex to please the perhaps unfairly discerning Leawood crowd. For example, as basic as it is, the Tofu w/ Awesome Sauce was easily one of my favorite dishes for a lonnnng time. It used to be pretty firm tofu dusted in rice flour served with what was likely a combination of sweet chili garlic sauce and Sriracha. Perfection! Now it is soft, almost silken tofu, slightly crispy, with sweet chili garlic sauce and so many green onions and cilantro that really all you taste is cilantro. Granted, I loathe cilantro, but there's really nothing awesome about a sauce that's inappropriately seasoned and balance. If there's at least 4 ingredients but you can only taste one, to me that's no longer worth of the name "awesome sauce". However, gripes aside, I'm not sure I've ever had any Asian style roasted meat like the kind they serve here. The pot roast it incredible, the duck is to die for, and the chicken is out of control good. Maybe next time I'll see if I can order it with veggies or rice instead of making the noodle mistake again. Issues aside, I've never had anything but incredible service here, and the ambiance is nice for a strip mall in Leawood. My suggestions are to try to try anything with the roast duck in it, and only get those dumplings if you're OK with them being as soft and mushy as the noodles are (try them fried, its a lot better!)

Oh Blue Koi I miss you so. I am a fan of both locations of this local restaurant and worked at the Leawood for a year before I moved to Colorado. I still always crave Blue Koi food. The staff has always worked together well (and are good-looking) making it a great atmosphere work in and dine at. They give honest opinions about dishes and are hard-working young people who enjoy their job. Everything from the service, wine list, bubble tea, hot tea, appetizers, dumplings and family recipes is perfection. My mom loves this place too and comes here with her lady friends pretty regularly. She loves the Blue Moon appetizer (which is shrimp & scallions fried into a crispy tortilla, served with a sweet plum sauce). They are very vegan/vegetarian/special requests friendly. You can get most of the meals on a bed of spinach, house- made egg noodles, or brown rice instead of the regular white rice. The dumplings are wonderful. There's this house-made garlic pesto dressing they use on salads, which I wanted to take home and use in recipes, its so good. I don't even eat tofu, but the Fried Tofu with Awesome Sauce is fantastic. The fried Eggplant appetizer with garlic sauce is great. I used to love getting the Chicken Lettuce Wraps for lunch and drench it in Awesome Sauce. The roast beef noodle soup is sooo good on a winter night, its spicy and you will have leftovers to take home and re-heat. I love getting a hot, pot of jasmine tea, spiked bubble tea (there are many flavors) and a scoop of green tea ice cream to end the meal. I still remember most of the menu and my mouth is now watering. I never skip coming here during my visits home to Kansas. The whole Chang family are all great people and have brought amazing Asian comfort food to KC and Leawood and have built up a great reputation. Cheers!

If you should ever find yourself anywhere near the Blue Koi, the Shrimp Dumplings with "Awesome Sauce" are the perfect appetizer/snack. Delicate little bundles of tender shrimp, perfectly carmelized (pan fried), compose the quintessential mouthful. The dumplings do not come with the Awesome sauce, but don't let that silly little obstacle dissuade you. Be sure to request it by name. This would be one of those hot insider secrets. And, to wash down this melt in your mouth morsel, I would suggest a Passion fruit, or Mango Bubble Tea! These are not your typical, run of the mill fruit Bubble Teas, but the essence of fresh fruit and summer in a glass. Vibrant colors, luscious, exotic, tropical fruit, that is then baptized with chewy black tapioca pearls. It is impossible to go wrong with this succulent combo. Together, they create the consummate light meal or starter. Don't just take my word for it, imbibe today.

Blue Koi holds a special place in my heart. Over plates of dumplings and bowls of steaming soup my husband and I fell in love. We've been going on dates at the original for almost 8 years, only recently venturing out to this new location. The atmosphere, food, and service are as exceptional as the original with one extra perk - - - outdoor seating! A few of our faves: crispy tofu w/ awesome sauce, wonton noodle soup with a side of chili oil, ants on a tree, lettuce wraps, dumplings (any flavor), vegan delight, almond shrimp asparagus, yeah pretty much the whole menu.

I walked into Blue Koi with a preconceived perception of just another "fusion chinese" place that was overrated... That was until food started rolling in. Pan-fried dumplings: Yum Crispy Tofu: Yum again I thought to myself, "Yeah, that was good but I'm still keeping my opinion"... until main courses arrived: Chinese Pot Roast (really?): Yep. And it was gooood. Chicken w/Black Bean sauce: I got a simple dish just to prove to myself that this place did not warrant a second visit. I was so wrong! And it was gooood. Ants on a Tree (what the?): It was gooood. I didn't get a chance to sample a couple of other dishes at the table but the folks that ordered them seemed to really enjoy them. Over a half hour into the meal, I caught myself really enjoying the food and ambiance. My foul mood had disappeared. It's amazing the affect good food and good friends can do for a bad mood. Enormous dishes and staff was great.

This is the first time I've had the pleasure of visiting the Leawood location. I went to lunch with one of my girlfriends who likes to get food and share. aka. perfect lunch guest. We had China Moon- Asian Shrimp Quesadilla- yummy and you need it with a side of AWESOME SAUCE! Chili Wontons- I couldn't even see them because they were covered with this soy scallion sauce that was unbelievably tangy and flavorful. Ants on a Tree- Their version of Lo Mein, needed a little seasoning but with all the other great sauces on the table that was an easy fix. Had a great experience with great service. I will be back sooner than my wallet would like because for a lunch $20 after tip is a little steep but overall so worth it.

Wow ! Nice trendy place. Relaxing, open airy feeling. Even amateur art for sale. I tried the Shrimp Curry. Perfection. Such a splendid combination of sweet and spice, it literally danced across my tongue. I also tried my first Bubble tea - coconut flavored. It was ok...being my first, I'm not sure whether it was the best it could be. The "bubbles" were a tad chewy. Wolfie had the pan seared chicken dumplings. I gotta say, I wasn't that impressed with them. I've had just as good at lower end places. While my entree' was superb, I can only give the place 3 stars. It's way way overpriced for what you get. As good as it was, I just can't justify paying the price for it. I felt like I was paying for the atmosphere. To be fair, I did get a fair amount of food for the normal person.....but alas, I am not normal....my dish was choked full of onions which I detest. Had I eaten all the onions, I'm sure I'd been full. I would never rule out going back. Just need a few more dollars to spend and not be quite so hungry.

The noodles are cooked perfectly, the chili wantons are exceptional and the black bean chicken with noodles hit the spot. It's always a delight to eat here. I eat here every time I'm in KC! I wish you had a place up in MN!

One of my favorite KC restaurants. I recommend the tofu with awesome sauce appetizer, the sauce is amazing. For entree my favorite is the Won Ton soup with pork dumpling and Fire on Duck is a close second. I've also enjoyed the Yellow Curry and Chinese Style Pot Roast.

I've been going to Blue Koi for some time now, with each experience I find I love the place more. For ages I listened to people rave and rave about Blue Koi, so I knew I needed to try it. Following my first encounter at the 39th Street location, I swore I would never go back. My husband and I, along with another couple, went about five years ago and we had the some of the worst food of my life. Out of four meals we only found one to be edible. But, as I've said before, even the best places have an off night - maybe there was a new cook, maybe one of the cooks wanted to sabotage the place, I don' know. A couple of years later, thanks to some persistent co-workers who wanted to lunch at Blue Koi, I gave the place a second chance and I've never looked back. The Mission Road location is closer to me, so I rarely make it back to the 39th Street location. Both spots have a really cool vibe. Both spots feature artwork by local artists. Both spots have young, hipster wait staff that is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. And, aside from that first experience, both spots serve quality food. My lunch experience on Friday, April 6 started with pork dumplings. Pillowy and full of meat and seasoning, I like the steamed just as well as I like the fried. I love the tangy dipping sauce, something I can never get enough of. This place isn't your traditional Americanized Chinese restaurant - you'll never find sweet and sour chicken on the menu, but you'll be richly rewarded with authentic Chinese dishes. On this visit I went with my favorite Blue Koi menu item, ginger basil chicken with noodles - chicken thighs, obviously marinated in some delicious goodness, then sautéed with basil. And the noodles, oh, the noodles, they may be homemade, I'm not positive, but they are good. This dish is unlike anything I've ever had before, but I imagine if my mother were Chinese she would make something this delicious. My one complaint about this visit, there were three of us and, when the meals came out of the kitchen there were only two. My friend had to wait about 5 - 10 minutes to receive her dish because the kitchen was training a new expediter. I feel like, when this happens, the restaurant should comp the meal or offer a free dessert or drink or something to make up for the fact that you are staring awkwardly at a blank table while your friends, at your insistence, chow down. Own the mistake, Blue Koi. I feel you on the new expediter situation, but you can afford to give away a bowl of white rice and a plate of dumplings (my friend's order) to keep a customer happy. Other than that, the meal was perfecto. Will I go back? Sure.

Chinese pot roast over noodles...is to die for! I've eaten here 3 times, and that's what I always get, along with some bubble tea. Loves me the bubbles! I keep telling myself I'll try something else... but the melt-in-your-mouth pot roast served on top of those soft, tasty noodles always calls me back. Although, the last time I ate there, I did try a little of my girlfriend's almond chicken and asparagus over rice, which was quite good. Service is great, and the wait staff is very friendly and attentive. Be prepared for a long wait on a Friday or Saturday night, though. This place is popular for good reason. I'll be back very soon....I can feel a Chinese pot roast craving coming on!

I couldn't wait to get back to Blue Koi since we have been in CA for 9 years. The ginger basil chicken was as good as I remembered. I order it over noodles. It is so yummy! My husband, not a big fan of Chinese food loves the Chinese pot roast. CAn't wait to go back!

Love the dumplings and appetizers, but I've been disappointed with every other item I've ordered from the menu. Something about the texture just doesn't sit well with me. That said, I went and just got drinks and dumplings with a few of my girlfriends a week ago and had a great time. The servers are always friendly and quick, the atmosphere is great and it's one of the few places my group of friends can agree on.

Blue Koi is one of my favorite restaurants in Kansas City. The cuisine is best described as Asian-fusion, fused with what? I'm not sure- but its good! Your typical sit down place, the menu gives you the option of several different meat and vegetable entrees set in soup, or on rice or noodles. I always get the noodles, the big chewy wide noodles. The braised tofu is my personal favorite, put the pork and the pot roast dishes are good as well. I recommend beginning your meal with the tofu served with "awesome sauce." I'm not sure what's in the sauce but it is in fact awesome and even a little spicy. Finally, Blue Koi is one of the original makers of "bubble tea." Before it hit the mainstream, Blue Koi was serving numerous flavors of smoothie-like tea mixed with tapioca balls and a big enough straw to drink both- a unique sensation to say the least. If you really want to ratchet it up a notch you can exercise the option of adding your favorite alcohol to your bubble tea. I highly recommend Blue Koi for dine-in or Take out.

The best Chinese pan asian place in KC. I really like there style. It is very authentic but appealing. everything is good but the fire bird is awesome. Some true midwesterners will not understand asian flavors. This is definitely should be one of the top picks for food in the region

Going to the Leawood Blue Koi was like going out with an identical twin and finding out that you are really only attracted to one of them. I have always loved the Blue Koi on 39th st. I was surprised to find that the food was so different at the Leawood location. Especially since the original owners where there. The sauce that came out with my China Moon was bland and had burnt a taste to it. The fan fried seafood dumplings came out really oily and my stomach was still unhappy several hours later after eating them.

Executive Summary: Overall a pretty nice place, and a good venue for a casual meet-up with friends. Service: I was quite impressed with the service. From the moment we walked in the door the staff was very friendly, and unlike many places they went ahead an took us to our table even though we were still waiting for the last member of our group to arrive. Atmosphere: The restaurant decor was up to date, and perhaps a bit hip, but did not come off as pretentious. It was fairly loud since the place was packed, but it was not overwhelming and there was no echo problem...so we had no problems having a conversation while we ate. Food: The food was good, and the portions seemed pretty generous for the price. But, I will say my entree ("Ants on a Tree") was a bit bland. I would have ordered something with more kick, but there were only three items on the menu marked as 'spicy'. One of these was marked very, very spicy (Fire Bird) and the other two seemed sort of 'generic Asian restaurant' (Shrimp, Chicken or Tofu w/ Black Bean Sauce or Chinese Curry Sauce). The lack of interesting spicy options was my only disappointment.

YUMMY! I love this place. It makes me wonder why we eat food unless it tastes this good. If I can't eat those magically delicious noodles and dumplings, why bother putting anything in my mouth! Ok so that's a little extreme, but you will know what I mean if you eat a meal here. I have also been to the other location and it is great as well! The service is with a smile and patient suggestions to first-timers. They have fantastic martinis (I recommend the Pineapple Upside Martini--it tastes like the cake-really!) Their dumplings are mouth-watering and satisfying, and their spicy black bean sauce dish with chicken is to die for. It comes with rice, but I get it with the noodles for $2 more and it's worth it! I'm pretty sure they make their noodles fresh. Sooooooo tasty. And that so deserves all those o's.

What can I say about Blue Koi but delicious? Ah, I've got it...expensive (for lunch anyway). I tried the Chinese pot roast with noodles, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavor of the meat was unbelievable. It was so good I may need to try making something similar at home. The noodles were good but didn't have much flavor on their own, but once mixed with the meat an a little Sirracha it was good to go. There isn't much in the way of vegetables in this dish or, really most the dishes by the look of things, but you can add a side of veggies. Unfortunately, this side of vegetables costs $5 so I did without. The service was also very good. Overall I really enjoyed my experience at Blue Koi, but I'd have a hard time going there too often for lunch because of the price. If I could have given 3.5 stars I would have based on the $12+ price for my lunch, but, damn, that Chinese pot roast tasted great!

Incredible food ... you get LOTS of incredible food ... they have amazing dumplings ... and their noodle bowls are also incredible ... A nice treat is an cup of hot green tea made the Blue Koi way. Great service too. Have the dumpling boiled ... healthier and they taste amazing!

Where do I start? My first visit (over 5 years ago) I was surprised at first glance of the menu- it didn't have combo lo mien or even general tso chicken like EVERY "chinese" restaurant! What?! That's because it's authentic & has real Chinese dishes made by the owner Scott's own family that have been passed down for years (or so he said). Over the years of trying out everything, my spouse & I have decided the Black Bean Chicken, Chinese Curry Shrimp (a sweet/spicy yellow curry), Ants on a Tree (noodles & diced chicken), Vegan Dumplings, & China Moon are hands down the best Chinese dishes in the city. Service is fast & our servers over the years have made the right recommendations that keep us coming back. Even better than the infamous Bo Lings. If you want something other than carry out "chinese" items, try them out- you won't regret it!

Different location, same excellent food. Even though it is hard to find, the place is standing room only by 6 on the weekend, and for good reason. I haven't tried the whole menu yet, but I have not been disappointed yet. Everything is made with some of he highest quality ingredients I've ever seen and cooked to perfection. Any dish they serve with meat is so tender, it can be eaten with a fork. The noodles are very good, if you think a noodle can't be that exciting, wait until you try these. My favorite dish is the almond chicken with dragon tea. At least for me, the tea and almonds do the same for the flavor as red wine does with a steak. The restaurant itself is very clean and nicely decorated. Very modern decor, with a lot of tile and stainless steel, but doesn't feel cold. There is also a really nice patio area outside. The road noise from 435 can be a little loud, but not too bad. The service is excellent. The waitstaff know everything there is to know about the menu and teas offered. Mama Blue came by one time to ask how our meal tasted, which is always a nice touch. You just can't go wrong here,

A friend wanted to go out for "bubble tea". What is bubble tea, you may ask. Well, I had the same question, and thus begins our journey at Blue Koi. I had many questions about this so-called bubble tea because there are so many options, but the server was very polite and informative. With her help, I ordered the ever so delicious Almond Smoothie Bubble Tea. I was so impressed, we decided to order an early dinner. A combination of pork dumplings and an entree called "spicy buns" made up a filling and delicious meal. For those who haven't been, you may still be wondering what bubble tea is...well you're going to have to go find out for yourself because I'm not going to spoil it for you :-) Go Blue Koi! I'll be seeing you again soon!

Rejoice, fellow Johnson Countians! You can satisfy your next craving for China Moon or Ants on a Tree without trekking clear over to 39th Street. The Blue Koi's new location is a little tricky to find, but it's more than twice the size of the original location. Inside they've decorated with the same cheerful color palette, and before you're even seated the deliciously familiar aromas will have you feeling right at home. If you weren't lucky enough to discover the Blue Koi's unique fusion of Thai and Chinese cuisine before, you're in for a treat. Most of their dumplings, curries, soups and spicy, flavorful dishes come with a choice of meat or tofu - crisp, flavorful tofu that even die-hard carnivores will go gaga for. Bubble teas in every flavor of the rainbow and light, tasty desserts provide the perfect bookends for each delicious dining experience.

I have been to Blue Koi probably 2 or 3 dozen times at the Leawood location and just love it. I have never had anything on the menu that I did not find outstanding. It's slightly pricey but certainly not expensive. In the summer I love to sit out on the patio and in the winter I honestly crave their fork-tender pot roast. I don't get the bubble teas everytime since they are high in calories, but they are a wonderful treat. Don't miss Blue Koi.

I have been hearing great things about both this and their original location but both are far enough from home that I would have to make a special trip, and I am wary about super-trend dining spots. This location tho is close enough to work that I could stop by after a few hours of OT on a recent Saturday and have lunch with friends. First let me say, that based on the presentation and flavor of the food alone I would have given Blue Koi a perfect 5. There are however other issues. I don't think there is enough parking. Both this place and the Blanc's next door are ultra popular right now, and there were only a couple parking spots outside while inside was barely half full. Love the decor, and the wait staff was friendly, responsive, and helpful. Food was excellent! I had shrimp in black bean sauce over noodles and it was fantastic. The dumplings we split were well above average. As for the tofu cubes and awesome sauce... well the sauce IS awesome. Now more negatives. The food was pricey. What I paid for a bowl of shrimp and veggies over noodles is close to what I pay for soup, salad, fried rice, steak and shrimp at a Japanese Steak House. The food is great but not so much better than other Asian food to justify the price. As a matter of fact, the more I thought about it later the more convinced I was that I was paying a premium for the trendiness of the place. Final thoughts... Good food I'd go back if friends/family wanted to, but it's sure not a must.

I was in town on business. This was recommended to us by the hotel staff. Great food and service. Had the chicken in Chinese curry and the seafood dumpling appetizers. Both were excellent.

Excellent Pork & Spicy Wontons!! Lettuce Wraps & Ginger Basil Noodles are also scrumptious!! Bubble Tea was divine!! Service was great as well!! Definitely an awesome place for lunch or dinner :)

I heart their bubble tea. I love a good bubble tea. I get the sweet taro flavored one usually, but have tried others as well, and all have been good. The food is great too. I always have to end up taking food home for a second meal, so it doesn't end up too pricey for me that way. The noodles are good especially if you opt to turn your entree into a noodle soup. It's so savory and delicious. Blue Koi provides the only tofu that I enjoy, the Crispy Tofu with Spicy Awesome Sauce appetizer. I convinced my husband to try it because people raved about it on Yelp. He really likes it as well. We get it each time we go. We usually end up with one of us ordering dumplings and one of us trying something else, and just kind of sharing. The pot roast is good, and the Fire Bird with duck is amazing. Spicy but SO good.

My mouth waters just thinking about the tofu with awesome sauce or the chili wontons. On a cool day or just any day, you can't beat a place of the pork ants on a tree...so good!

Wonderful food and service. Need a lunch menu though, $15 for lunch is a bit steep. We would go there more often if they had lunch entrees under $10...

Great Chinese food place that serves Shiner Bock Beer, what more could you ask for. Our family loves this place. Oh good note, you can ask then to swtich the rice or noodles on any dish with spinach...good stuff. Can be a wait but service is always good.

i finally remembered to stop by Blue Koi for dumplings and bubble tea for lunch, i used to go often to the 39th street location. this location was easy to find its right off Mission, and i was pleased with the clean comfortable decor and very nice staff. the almond bubble tea and pork pan fried dumplings were better than i remembered and i definately will keep this in mind since its so close to everything i frequent. total bill was $15, and i was happy with my experience.

A long-time favorite we hadn't visited in awhile. Was better than ever! Cantonese duck on noodle, pot roast and wonton soup can't miss. Kids LOVE the dumplings and fried tofu with "awesome sauce." Great service always...

Yo, Katie D---It's your bestie that you dined with and I'm pretty sure my "funky ass cilantro dish" did not leave me disappointed, but left me wanting more! I love Blue Koi! They're appeal is Asian-fusion. You're seeing menu items that you would associate with Asian culture, but Blue Koi steps away from MSG, goo-encrusted chicken and offers fresh herbs and simpler ingredients. Their dumplings are perfect for my taste, they are not too thick or "gummy". And the Shanghai chicken dumpling soup that I got was unbelievably fresh that the spinach even left grit on my teeth (the feeling one would receive after eating chard or collard green). Which maybe some people would be turned off by such a sensation, but to me that just goes to show how fresh and healthy this place is. I also tried one of their duck noodle dishes and the flavor was just incredible. You will disappointed if you're expecting general tso's and greasy lo-mein, this place is not even considered in the same league, realm, or culture as other Chinese restaurants Americans have grown to love (and eventually loathe). And just like Katie D. said, I cannot wait to go back!!

The food here is not good. First I had ordered the Ginger Chicken w/ noodles. I was sitting at the bar watching them "prepare" it, which consisted of taking noodles out of boiler and scooping chicken out of a steamer and putting a sprig of basil on top. The noodles were way over cooked, the were total mush. And, the chicken was of almost the same consistency when I picked it up with my chopsticks and it fell apart. They were nice enough to make me something different . I asked for something a little fresher. The second dish was broccoli chicken, it was significantly better than the first dish, however it was still bland when they told me it was going to be spicy. If I would have had the second dish first I probably wouldn't have complained or be writing this review, I probably would have left thinking it was OK but nothing to write home about , maybe 2 stars. They also charged me for a Pepsi after I had ordered a Jack and Coke(which was extremely weak for 6$). I won't be coming back, and I will probably recommend people not to go here.

When I hear people are looking for a place to eat while in Kansas City, this is always the restaurant I recommend. This is absolutely one of my favorites and I'm glad I ended up going last night. My family and I often go to the Blue Koi when we're celebrating something, and last night was no exception. Congrats to my little brother for being named a national finalist for a cartooning award! We ended up going to the Overland Park location, which, in my opinion, just doesn't have the same personality as the 39th Street original location. It's set up to look quite similar - the walls are painted a faded blue and ever-changing for-sale artwork adorns them. Indie music usually plays and overall it's a very calming environment. I ordered the vegetarian ants on a tree (which I'm pretty sure is vegan, too), a pot of jasmine pearl tea, and crispy tofu with awesome sauce. The crispy tofu, our appetizer, is one of those dishes that we get every time we go and it's always fantastic. It's little fried cubes of tofu served with a sweet chile sauce packed with ginger, garlic, and cilantro. The tea was delicious, as well - a gentle floral taste. The ants on a tree dish wasn't as good tonight as it had been in previous nights. Basically it's a large pile of stir-fried rice noodles, cabbage, tofu, and mushrooms - a simple and satisfying meal. Last night, the noodles were a little overdone, but no matter, still pretty good. Honestly, anything on this menu is great. The service here is generally pretty good. The waiters are usually the hipster type, but are always extremely personable. Our server last night was, unfortunately, inattentive and disinterested. Not the usual, but sometimes, it's just what you get. Nothing went wrong and everything went smoothly - he just wasn't one for small talk. Overall, this place is great and I'd highly recommend. But do yourself a favor and visit the 39th Street location. So much more character!

I'd never been here before, and for my fiancé it had been a few years (and a different location). What a nice change! The ambiance is nice, the facility was clean and the wait staff was very friendly! Good for a date night (though not very intimate) and also a nice family place. We tried the bubble tea, frozen and YUM.MY! (my fiancé loves a virgin daiquiri, and said the frozen strawberry bubble tea was just as yummy) I had the coconut, no bubbles. For appetizers we had the fried wontons, variety pack and the lettuce wraps. Both were delicious, though I preferred the wraps. I had the black bean shrimp with and my fiancé had curry chicken with noodles. Though both dishes were delicious, we both thought the black bean disk was superior. Can't wait to go back!!

I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed Blue Koi before...it's one of our staples. I have always loved the original one on 39th (my husband works in Midtown so we would go there frequently for lunches) but we live closer to Mission Farms so it's great to have one so close! It's been a while since either one of us has strayed from our 'favorites' the China Moon is a must, the dumplings are all good although I've found the ones with pork are always tastiest, Ants on a Tree may look really odd but it is delicious and the Chinese Pot Roast has a lovely flavor. Many times when I am craving protein, this is the first dish that comes to mind. There is also a Shrimp and Asparagus dish on the menu that I haven't had for a while that is really good. They make their own noodles. Yum. The place is run well, they have good service. Many times the owners are the ones looking for seats for you at the bar. A big thumbs up. The bubble teas are fantastic too. :)

How have I not rated this place yet?? The staff is really great, get there early, or there is usually a wait, but I have never seen it over 15 minutes or so. The patio is really nice, clean, and roomy. Inside, it feels a little cramped, but with how busy they get, I can see why they need to make sure space is made. The dumplings are my go-to appetizer, and as far as meals, I love the ginger-basil chicken, and the pork/mushroom meal. I always opt for their noodles, they're just delicious. I also recommend sitting at the bar at least once, it really is fun to watch the chefs in action.

Had the crispy tofu, pretty good. I liked how there were some snow peas mixed in. Awesome sauce is too sweet. I liked all the scallions in it though. I had the chicken basil lettuce wraps, pretty tasty and filling. Friend had the seafood dumplings, were pretty tasty. Would come back for those. Not a bad place. I would come back.

I wanted to LOVE this place. I can't. I came here with 3 other people from work. The two men loved their food. I, and the other woman with us, hated our food. It looked and smelled like cat food, and the taste wasn't any better. The noodles were great, the meat? Not so much. The only reason it gets 3 starts and no lower is because their dumplings are very good. I would come back just for those and move on somewhere else for a main course.

All I've heard were good things about this place. So my friend and I went for lunch on a Monday and it was not busy, we got seated right away. I thought the menu was kind of intimidating, I don't know why. It wasn't a huge menu but just different things on it and I thought pretty pricey but you get a huge amount of food. I got the Chicken with brown sauce with homemade noodles. I just got the noodles because I wanted to see what they were all about and they were good! You can totally tell they they were homemade! But very filling as well, I felt so stuffed and it didn't even look like I made a dent on my plate so for $15 I got two meals out of it. My friend got the Almond Shrimp Asparagus....that was good as well! It has a creamy sauce over a bed of rice! For drinks we had a frozen margarita and a honeydew bubble tea. I already want to go back and try more things :) Service was good as well.

Super won tons dumplings. Try the shrimp. So good! The black bean sauce here is sublime. I have had the tofu and the chicken. Both outstanding. Also with noodles and brown rice. Again, both outstanding. If you are a big eater the noodles will do the trick. I love the fact that the ladies who own the place are often present and engaged with their customers. Service is excellent. This place is also spotless. Love to see that when eating out.

Loved this location!!!! Ordered the passion fruit bubble tea, with a shot of tequila (because it was 5pm, literally), and the wonton noodle soup. The soup was delicious, with lots of meaty wontons. I love that they make their own noodles, it gives the dish that "homey goodness" feeling. The wontons were plump and well seasoned. The broth was clean and perfect for my sore throat. My bubble tea was also quite tasty, the only negative was that the pearls were a bit on the hard side.

This place is horribly overrated in my opinion (4 out of 5 stars?). It is nestled in a suburbian apartment complex so I'm guessing those who reviewed it are the nearby inhabitants. My friends and I were excited to try the boba tea drinks with alcohol, but they were way off. The waiter recommended the mango with almond milk one...yuck...Speaking of the waiter, he seemed to be ready to get off his shift because he forgot or got confused with 2 of our orders and basically left us outside unattended. And then some other person checked in on us who was supposedly the owner? Well, yes, we were missing our order of mixed dumplings. With the "mixed" dumplings I thought that meant separate shrimp, chicken, and pork dumplings. But these dumplings had all the meat mixed in each dumpling...uh what? The waiter had also recommended this firebird chicken with noodle dish. Yes, the noodles were spicy, but overall the noodles were limp and the chicken was bland. Honestly, the whole experience was pretty disappointing. I felt like I paid way too much for a blah meal :(

Good, fresh quality ingredients, and definitely an ideal for the American palette. I ordered the vegan delight noodle soup ($13.50) for dinner. The dish was a clear brown broth base with a flavorful punch. It was served with chopped cabbages, daikon, mushrooms, carrots, and clear glass noodles. I was a bit upset to realize that 1) I was served glass noodles -- I don't like glass noodles. 2) The noodles were literally only a single mouthful. My friend ordered the summer special of cold chicken/cucumber noodles, and we tried a bit of each other's plate. In regards Asian food inspirations I do not critique lightly, so thus my rating, but I wish to leave each guest to their own imagination this time. Service alone was superb, the owner herself often mingled with the affairs of her business: hosting, serving, seating, greeting, etc. Her staff were all courteous and mannered gentlemen. It seems they were always present with their guests at the right time; never away too long. There is indoor as well as outdoor seating (shades from the sun & roof from the rain!), and the ambience overall was very calming and private. Dress code can be casual or dressy, nothing prohibits the customer from either. I think this a good place for formal dining with bosses and coworkers, you will find yourselves most comfortable and well-attended to.

Scott C, you do not welcome guests with service animals. You cannot deny what you did was unwelcoming, impolite, unprofessional, and ableist. If you want to welcome all guests, I suggest you become more acquainted with disability services and animals, because, as of 2015 you and your restaurant engages in ableism, which is a serious crime. While you were lecturing us about the laws our dog was breaking, you discriminated against a young disabled woman. You should apologize, because what you did was not smart or right, it was SIMPLY wrong.

Blue Koi is one of those restaurants that come up as an option whenever my husband and I are trying to decide where to go out to eat but ultimately go somewhere else. However, we finally decided to come back here for lunch the other day wondered why we didn't come here more often. We started off our meal like we have done the other times we have come to Blue Koi--with pork pan fried dumplings and lettuce wraps. The flavors both appetizers were wonderfully savory and the textures were spot-on. My husband's Chinese Pot Roast with handmade noodles was delicious as always. I decided to forgo my usual order of duck soup with noodles (which was always outstanding when I ordered it) for the lunch special of Chinese pot roast sliders with a side of Kimchi and sweet potato french fries. I loved the meal, and got a lot of food (it was around $10) for the price. I wish that there were more kid-friendly options--my kids aren't the blandest of eaters but they aren't the most adventurous, either, so some kid-friendly options would have been nice. We ordered them a side of noodles, which they didn't like (not a problem because my husband and I ended up devouring them later on) so we ended up feeding them lettuce from my MIL's house salad and my sweet potato fries (yes, I now realize my Mother of the Year nomination must now be revoked). I also finished my meal with a blended Almond Joy boba. Although it isn't a traditional flavor, it had just the right amount of sweetness and the right amount of tapioca balls and brought me back to my college days in California and our late-night runs to the nearby pearl tea shop. Blue Koi is easily one of the best, if not THE best, Chinese restaurants in the KC metro area. It's probably one of the best area restaurants, period. My husband and I should save ourselves the trouble of figuring out where to go for dinner by going here a lot more often and enjoy the delicious, flavorful, homemade Chinese food here. The food is so good we'll even forgive them for letting Guy Fieri into the place.

What we ordered: - Chicken Lettuce Wraps: so flavorful. The shitake mushrooms and sauces added depth to the flavor of the sauce. - Organic Tofu : Amazing sauce - Chicken Dumplings (steamed) : Amazing Beverage: - Almond Milk Tea with Boba ( blended) Main Course - Wonton Soup: the broth tastes a little like pho. I came here after Guy on Food Network visited and was pleasantly surprised. The service is amazing and the food initially looks ok, but every dish was surprisingly bursting with flavor.

This place is fantastic. We've been here literally scores of times over the years. Wait staff is attentive and reliable, service is very fast without ever feeling rushed. I'm vegan and there's tons of stuff for me, and they serve lots of meat if that's your thing. In short, this restaurant does not miss a beat--every time. It's run like a submarine in war time, whether there's two tables of people or 30. Highly recommend. One time after a gig (I have a band) we showed up really late (large party). We were welcomed, and they kept everything open (bar and kitchen) and we were waited on by the owner. Don't pass up Blue Koi if you're looking for a unique take on Asian fusion and top notch service!

My favorite Taiwanese place in KC! Try the Ginger Basil chicken over their housemade noodles. Get them extra spicy, and you will love it! Ants on a Tree is awesome- super vegetal and delicious. Something you can't find in most Asian joints around here! Their specials are always worth it- and I can't NOT mention how delicious their dumplings are. My favorite is the pork. But - and this is a great point about this place - if you're veggie or vegan, you will LOVE their options! They have fantastic options available that are all delicious. And the thing I like best? They are INCREDIBLY food allergy friendly! If you have friends who struggle, bring them here and the staff is wonderfully accommodating. The patio is perfect for spring evenings- this is one of my favorite places to dine! The ambience, service, and delicious food at Blue Koi combines to make it one of the best places in KC!

Excellent cuisine always! They have perhaps the best dumplings in the city, and their food and service is always top notch. I especially like the shrimp and seafood dumplings. Do yourself a favor, and order those, and Braised pork and Shitake mushroom entree. Will will not be disappointed.

Disclaimer: [This review is very specific of my experience. Others who accompanied me were happy with their food] I ordered the Fire Bird with chicken(as was suggested to me by a friend). I expected great things but when the dish arrived, the chicken was smelly and the amount of oil in the bowl was a complete turn off. I am definitely not having that dish again. That being said, I loved the fried chicken dumplings and the overall service was good but nothing to write home about. The portion sizes are huge(enough for 3 meals really).

Came here today on the recommendation of yelp reviews and diners dives and drive inns. We got seated fast but it was still relatively early but started to fill up fast shortly after we got seated. The waitress was friendly and helpful I went off the recommendation of some yelpers and ordered the pan sired dumplings (pork shrimp and chicken) and they were delicious. I ordered the fire bird chicken with white rice and just like everyone else it was delicious and there was plenty of food, enough that I took home leftovers my girlfriend ordered shrimp with curry sauce and she thought it was wonderful she as well took home leftovers. The only negative I had while I was here was the annoying overly loud female seating behind talking about a basketball game and her team being up by 20 points and going on and on about it..... she was just to loud and right next to me ear, but that is not the restaurant fault the lady just needed a muzzle, luckily we were about to pay our bill. Delicious food, triple d came through with a good recommendation

This is a great location for meeting my friends. 39th isn't always convenient for all to meet on a busy Saturday so we opt for this location. The staff here are efficient and friendly. The server was knowledgeable about gluten-free options for one of our party. The food is great. I like the dumplings here. I really, really do! On recommendation from one of my friends I tried the pot roast with noodles. I admit it was tasty and a massive serving.

I've eaten here about 4 times over the last 3 years. Each time the food has been really good. One thing I like about this place is the menu is not overwhelming and they really do have something for everyone. I ordered the vegetarian noodle bow. The flavors are awesome and it lets the vegetables shine. The lunch bowl was huge and my take home is enough for 2 other meals!. I got a bite of the famous Firebird chicken. Oh my - it's YUMMY! A bit spicy but delicious!

Pros- fresh, light and brilliantly thought of ingredients incorporated into their dishes. The restaurant itself has a very nice vibe and a hustle- bustle to it, without being overbearing. Good selection of wines and other alcoholic beverages. Cons- lighting in the seating area is a little dim for my taste, that's about the only thing I would change about the place. Pro tip- get the cold sake or spiked bubble tea (preferably coconut or honeydew flavor) the firebird, or the ginger basil chicken. You will want moar! 9/10 would revisit :)

I've already rated the 39th Street location, but as I've been going to this one more often recently, I wanted to give them a shout out too. Just as good as the original location. Love the pan-seared dumplings, the China Moon appetizer, both of the chicken entrees we've had. Never a disappointment.

  • Rachel B.

Somewhat disappointing. I think my perception of this place is hampered by my high expectations, since the restaurant was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, but it really was just okay. The service was wonderful, perfect even, and we were seated right away as the restaurant was almost full, but a few tables open. We ordered shrimp dumplings as an appetizer, and for all the great reviews of the dumplings, they were very bland. If not for the sauce that accompanied them, I would not have eaten them- that's how bland they were. The bubble coffee was good, but not the best I have had. The awesome sauce is truly awesome- unique and imaginative, all of the great Americanized Asian flavors mixed together into this wonderful cocktail of chunky vegetables and wonderfulness. It's a good thing we ordered plenty because I needed it to season up my entree. My boyfriend did really like the pot roast. He said the meat was done perfectly, very moist and tender as well as flavorful. His noodles were also very tender and flavorful, but I could tell he was not that into them because he did not finish them all, nor did he take them home. I ordered the Ants on a Tree with Tofu, but this was really pretty bland. It's like a mountain of noodles- enough for a whole family- with a topping of tofu and I'm not sure what else on top. Not enough flavor for sure. I also didn't really like the noodles that much. I put plenty of sriracha and awesome sauce on top and this made it better, but it wasn't great. Too bad, we thought it would be better. I doubt we will return.

Blue Koi is a weekly staple for us. Prior to giving up meat, I used to always order the Chinese Style Pot Roast over steamed rice. It is one of the most comforting dishes I have ever had. My husband enjoys it, although his "dish of the moment" is the Shanghai Wonton Noodle Soup. My previous favorite dish was the Fire Bird Tofu. We used to order a side of Homemade Noodles to split, but now I have consolidated my order. On a suggestion from an acquaintance, we ordered the Crispy Tofu with Spicy Awesome Sauce. It does not take the place of their Spicy Chili Pepper Wontons. I also tried the Ants on a Tree, but I prefer the Fire Bird or Homemade Noodles. Our current order: Cold Sake or a pot of Jasmine Pearls Tea Spicy Chili Pepper Wontons (vegetarian) Shanghai Wonton Noodle Soup (vegetarian) Homemade Noodles (two orders for me) Our servers are absolutely lovely. I used to prefer the Midtown location, but I feel like I am at home in the Leawood location.

The pork dumplings and fire bird chicken were amazing. I would have ordered it extra hot next time as it wasn't hot enough to warrant the 3 peppers it showed on the menu. The menu is much smaller than your typical chinese restaurant and I wish they offered fried rice as an option.

I had been working non stop for a couple of weeks when finally things slowed down last Friday night and my parents suggested Blue Koi at Mission Farms. It was exactly what I needed, and what was even better was the service. Knowledgeable and non-intrusive server who was clearly well-trained. The dumplings were wonderful, and the crispness of the iceberg for lettuce wraps was dead on. My stepdad ordered a pot pf the Jasmine tea and practically melted. I don't even like tea, and it was soooo good! If you want to put yourself in a "coma" as our server suggested, finish up with the Cheesecake wontons.

I just reviewed the 39th street Blue Koi last week and pretty much everything that was said about that location can be said about this one with two exceptions. The dumplings are the same great tasting and top quality that you find at the 39th street location. Still the best dumplings you will find. The various filling mixtures are seasoned perfectly and plentiful so they do not get lost in the wrapping. The boba for the bubble tea is always fresh. We found out on this visit that they make the boba fresh daily. After having some nasty boba at other places, this is a huge plus for me. The patio is a huge plus for this location. On nice days you can enjoy the weather as you eat your meal. The view isn't incredible (speaking of the scenery, not the people entering and leaving the workout place next door), but it is a nice patio. The other menu items are just as delicious as the dumplings. On this visit I even broke out of my norm and tried something new. I am never disappointed with the things I try at either location. I also like how they tried to bring the decor and vibe of the 39th street location to this one. Imagine 39th street with new tables and chairs and you pretty much have the look of this location. Now for the two exceptions, the service is friendly at this location and I have never had a bad experience, but it is different. The difference in neighborhoods is evident in the difference in service. Neither is ever bad, it is just more of a natural feel of friendliness at the 39th street store. Secondly, the difference in music is kind of disappointing. The music is always a joy at the 39th street location and just adds to the entire experience. After a few songs, we noticed it wasn't the same and it was a little disappointing. This too might be due to the different areas, but it is missed in the dining experience. My cons are being a little nit picky as they are good things, just things I am spoiled by at the other location. There is absolutely no reason not to stop at this location or drive further to the other location. This is a top notch eating establishment!

The tender, spicy peanutty firebird duck is one of the best things I've ever had in my life. I have had periods of time when I have to go on a weekly basis. Try it with their homemade noodles. This is the ultimate comfort food. Service here is warm and friendly. This is not a normal Chinese place--its exciting fusion comfort food. Because the service is so good, its a great place to go with a group. Oh, and you can order extra sides of their sauces and take them home. I don't leave without some extra awesome sauce.

My husband and I went for dinner to blue koi. We ordered chicken dumplings, chilly pepper wontons and fire bird rice. The flavors seemed too strong and pungent in the chilly pepper wonton. Fire bird rice was really good . Service was quick and good. Overall I liked the food. However it's not extraordinary.

The family led me here with a momentum I cannot explain. It was as if someone said the name "Blue Koi" and all the family cars started whirling that direction without anyone having to argue or discuss it. I didn't fight it, I just went along for the ride. We got a great parking spot, walked through the restaurant's peaceful entrance-way, and were greeted by smiling hosts who showed us our table. Sriracha was waiting at the table -- a good sign! They are into pepsi products but you can order a diet dr pepper so everything was blissful again. I had to do a mental check: My sister, who is a strict vegetarian, and my step dad, who is meat-n-potatoes only, both love this place AND there's sriracha on the table. OK this place is winning me over fast! We ordered the steamed vegetable dumplings and almost fought over them because they were so good. But, yet again, the peaceful harmonious draw of the place kept us from having any fights. My mother hates spicy food and I love spicy food....how's this going to work, I thought? She found a non-spicy soup on the menu and I found a spicy chicken stir fry in black bean sauce. Again, everyone was happy. The prices were reasonable considering the atmosphere, the service, and the enormous amount of leftovers we took home with us. We will certainly be back. Especially because my brother-in-law was sad we didn't invite him so we need to go back for him.

Plenty of vegetarian options. Try the crispy tofu with spicy awesome sauce. Yes, it is awesome! Food and service were both great. I will definitely be going back.

Easily the best pan-Asian cuisine in the metro area. There isn't much that Blue Koi has to offer that wouldn't please the palate. Please don't go here, however, if you are looking for sweet and sour chicken or beef and broccoli. Blue Koi kicks it up a notch and serves up well-crafted dishes that are not only good to look at, but also great to eat. No meal here is complete without a pot of hot tea, steamed or pan-fried dumplings, and one of their signature entree items like the pot roast, ants on a tree, or the chicken asparagus. The setting as cozy as the 39th street location, but Mission Farms can get a little stuffy. Regardless, Blue Koi is sure to please all tastes.

I'm a huge fan of this restaurant. It's good for any season, but going when the weather is cold is the best. I've ordered every version of their famous dumplings, and I have settled on the fact that pork is my favorite. It should be mandatory that you order them with "awesome sauce". The wonton soup is delicious and doesn't feel disgustingly heavy. I typically order the black bean chicken with noodles The noodle option is not on the menu for this dish, but they will do it for a small up-charge. WORTH IT. This restaurant is slowly but surely becoming my favorite in Kansas City. I eat out a lot. Probably too much. I order take out and I eat in. In fact, I have leftovers in the fridge right now that I will be eating for lunch.

I have been wanting to come here for weeks and so 4 of my middle-aged gal pals and I came here for a midweek dinner. Any time we are together, it's a party, but we like our food and drink so you better deliver. Blue Koi delivered, mostly. First of all, our server. He was marvelous. Someone thought his name was Brent, but we couldn't remember what he told us, so we just called him Pete. Anyway, he was patient (you need that with our group), informative by providing suggestions without being pushy (it drives me crazy when a server says "everything is good" LIAR!!!!) and efficient. AND he got our sense of humor. Or at least pretended to. That's all we care about. So, Brent/Pete, you rocked!!! And we are a tough crowd. Next, the drink. They only charge a $6 corkage fee, so two gals shared a bottle of wine they brought. Score! Two gals was drinking yummy mango martinis of which I had a taste. I was just going to have bubble tea and then saw the option to add a kick (shot of alcohol) to it. I asked the server for a rec and he suggested the sweet green bean (these are vanilla beans not string beans - don't gross out on me) with almond and a shot of rum - smoothie (or blended) style. OH MY GOODNESS!! It was amazing. Tasted like Kahlua. I wanted to hug him. Did I? No I don't think so. But YUM!. So big I couldn't drink it all. Next, the food. I had a little snack with my son before I came, so I just ordered the shrimp dumplings, pan fried per our server's suggestion. They were kind of greasy. In fact, they were really greasy. I only ate 4 of the 8. They were OK. Everyone else's food looked and tasted (had a few samples) great. The Firebird, Wonton soup and seafood soup looked like winners. It's not cheap, but there was definitely enough for 2 meals in every case. We also had an appetizer of the fried tofu with spicy awesome sauce. Yes, it was spicy and awesome. So would I come back? Yes, I'd like to try it again and order something different to eat. However, that bubble tea is on my list no matter what I get.

DUMPLINGS! I've yet to be able to find dumplings as good as Blue Koi in Kansas City. My recommendation is to just order dumplings and maybe a sid eof rice/noodles for your dinner. And you best eat them with the awesome sauce.

Our main stay for eating out and loving every bite. No matter what we order we love it. My personal favorite is tofu with black bean sauce.

Took the girlfriend out to dinner for date night and we both enjoyed our evening. Our first stop was here and we couldn't be anymore satisfied than we were. The ambiance was pleasant and relaxing. The service we received wasn't anything special but our waitress was very kind and nice! The food was amazing. We got the veggie lettuce wraps for an appetizer and ordered a side of awesome sauce which was "awesome." The girlfriend got a noodle black bean sauce dish and I got the fire bird noodle dish with duck. I am not a fan of duck but I would definitely get this dish with chicken. Overall our experience was great and very well priced! We will be back!

This was our first time here. We got there before the rush came in. The waiter was nice and polite. It took 30 minutes to get our food. The food was mediocre. My husband ordered a noodle soup dish, that was decent. The only thing my daughter and I enjoyed was the boba tea.

Another of those places where I've only been to the suburban location instead of venturing further from home. It's one of my favorites however, and, except for a couple of misses on my last visit, is always a solid choice. Entree-wise, it's hard for me to veer away from the pot roast, which is so unexpected, but so delicious. Both the pan fried and the boiled dumplings are light and delicious. I've had the pork, the chicken, the seafood, and they are all consistently excellent. During this last visit, my dining companion and I decided to follow up our dumplings with a couple of other appetizers - the China Moon and the scallion cake. The China Moon was heavy and had little textural interest. The scallion cake was just ... fried. Not a lot of scallion flavor, and even a good dousing with awesome sauce didn't bring it back for me. I won't grade Blue Koi down too much for those - I was the one who ordered two fried dishes. I'm guessing if you stay away from that and go more for the non-fried items, you'll be just as happy as I usually am.

Absolutely love this restaurant. It is hands down one of my favorites! Professional & friendly staff. Also they have wonderful bubble teas; the tapioca pearls were made to perfection!

Do not come here if you want authentic Chinese. The dumplings are ok. I would prefer more water in the filling. The entrees are too sweet for me. The wrapping for wonton and dumplings are too thick. Nice environment, good service. Three of us didn't really eat our entree though. The duck appetizer taste like wood.

The food was really good and the service was fantastic. I ordered a dish that had something in it that I cannot eat. I asked them to make the dish without it. The waiter said it wouldn't be a problem. However, when I got my dish, it still had the ingredient in it. I told the waiter and he apologized and immediately fixed his mistake. I was still a little sad because everyone else in my group was finishing up eathing by the time my dish returned with the correct ingredients.

Ok they close EARLY we came at 10:10. The door was locked. When I called they said they closed at 10:30 . The owner lady and friends where sitting at the bar drinking. We went next door to the TAVERN.

One of my favorite places to take customers for lunch. Some of the best dumplings in the KC area. Scott and Jane are cool owners and for a time when I was coming in often they always recognized me and treated me well. Most, if not all, of the dishes on the menu are very good and I have never ate anything here that I did not like. Ginger Basil Chicken main dish is my favorite. You can do most dishes over brown/white rice or noodles.

Love love love this place! We've been to both this location and the original dozens of times, and it's always been a fantastic experience. Leawood location has been a bit slow on service a couple of times, but Volker always spot on! Both have the exact same delicious meals, and same laid back, casual atmosphere. Always very friendly too! My fave is the Shanghai Wonton Noodle Soup, and hubby's is Vegan Delight...gotta try 'em!

I just want to make this clear... I am not giving 5 stars because I can't afford to eat here as much as I would like. I feel very limited by this and it is a negative. Otherwise -- it's some good food! I LOVE the Shanghai Wonton Noodle Soup. However, it's over 12 dollars. Sigh. It is a lot of soup though. The bowl is huge and they give you plenty of wontons ( maybe 8). It's really up my alley (love the soup) and the bubble tea...yeah! They will put booze in it for an extra charge! Great idea there! I don't opt to do this because I cannot afford any additional charges. (They suggest Kahlua in almond or mocha bubble tea. They also have rum, vodka, tequila and bourbon-- maybe more!) I have had the fried dumplings - combo flavor and they were quite good. A little small but flavor packed. Of course, you gotta dip them in the "awesome sauce". The duck appetizer was not my favorite. It was really sweet but I ate it. A friend of mine got the pot roast and he loved it. The meat was so soft he was cutting it with his fork. I have dined in once and had no qualms with the staff. I have ordered pick up many times and they are extremely efficient and friendly. Good people, good food, good place. Too bad about the prices. When I just get the soup I can get two meals out of it and that's my justification. PS The hot sauce they offer is really hot. Try a little before covering your food in it.

Had a lot of saki! Try the Ants on a tree if you're looking for something light. Or the Pot Roast if you like something more robust. Oh yeah, make sure to try the awesome sauce - it gets a 8/10. WooHoo

I frequent this location several times a month, sometimes twice a week. I usually stop by in the evening hours but sometimes on a weekend I'm in for lunch. My favorite is Pork and Shiitake mushrooms in the noodle soup. I always ask for extra mushrooms! All of the servers here are great, but if I stop by on Brent's shift, it's always a pleasure. He's just a great waiter!

I'll say this, if you ask Blue Koi to make it hot, they will make it hot. Wow. And I loved every bit of it. The restaurant is known for its dumplings and noodles, but also offers a healthy appetizer menu. I'm not much of a tea drinker, but those in the group who are swore by the bubble tea. If you're into this, based on their reactions I would check it out. We started with the tofu and awesome sauce. Awesome indeed, the tofu didn't even have a chance to cool off. For a main course I tried the chicken curry smothered in extra hot sauce. I was sweating after five bites. Despite its heat, which was what I wanted, the dish still kept its moisture and flavor. Our server took a while to take our order after we ordered an appetizer, but otherwise was friendly and attentive. I think he filled my water glass about seven or eight times. The dining room is quaint, but very comfortable and despite it being full for most of the night was surprisingly quiet. Our table was easily able to hold a conversation and not worry about upsetting those around us. And despite the restaurant being at peak occupancy, the longest wait for a table was twenty minutes at the most. If you're out and hungry in south Kansas City, this is a spot I recommend.

We had some friends in town from San Francisco for one night and were stumped as to where to take them out south to keep them close to their hotel. We settled on Blue Koi, only because I had been to the 39th location. We went at around 8pm on a Thursday. No problems with parking or seating. Our waitress was da bomb and answered all of our questions with specific descriptions and honesty. We began with the steamed vegetarian dumplings. While they were tasty, I was a little disappointed in the mainly shredded cabbage filling. That didn't stop me from eating two of them, though. Then, it was time to order my entree. Oh my, while something usually jumps out at me as THE menu item I must try, several dishes looked so good! I asked the waitress about the Fire Bird "three peppers" spiciness; she said it was about the same as Thai medium, so I settled on that. Perfect choice! I ordered it with chicken. Perfect spicy for me, and the chicken pretty much melted in my mouth. I ordered the house-made noodles, and they were sinful. The portion was huge! About three servings for me. I took home leftovers that lasted for two more meals. I think my only complaint would be the amount of oil in the sauce, but I don't go out for dinner like this to maintain my figure. Others in my party had the Cantonese Duck and the basil chicken. They also loved their food. For dessert, we all shared the cheesecake wontons with mango sauce, and we split a serving of green tea ice cream. The wontons were pretty incredible, and I am usually not much of a dessert person. All in all, this was a great place for us to catch up with our friends. On our way out (we closed the place down), the owner stopped us and thanked us for coming. We will definitely return to this location soon!

Most delicious noodles ever. Duck was super moist and very flavorful. Ginger Basil Chicken was tender and plentiful. Staff was attentive. The pork dumplings were the best we have EVER had. Can't wait to visit again.

I've been here a few times and thoroughly enjoyed all of my expriences. The dumplings are dynamite, the duck tastes very close to what I have had in China itself, the noodles are decent (though I'm not a huge egg noodle fan...I'd prefer a thinner noodle). The service has always been fast and friendly, even on a busy weekend night. Drinks come out quick, food comes out quick, bill comes out as soon as you want it. Parking on a weekend can be a nightmare, what with all the restaurants around here. It could require a bit of a walk, which can be a pain in nasty weather. However, it's worth it in the end...I assure you. Oh, and one more thing: Vodka Bubble Tea. That is all...

Honestly, I can't say I've had bad food here. My mom loves this rest but I'm not over the moon about it. BUT it's a solid choice. My mom is crazy about their black bean chicken. I've always tried something different. Dumplings are always great. Curried chicken is pretty good. Shanghai wonton is great. All in all, not as crazy about it as my mother but I would def recommend it to a friend.

Best dumplings in town! My favorite is the chicken and shrimp! Yumm! They have a special called congee- chicken or seafood. They are both delicious! Very friendly service, clean, and great food!!

Long story short: not a bad place.... A little on the pricey side, but then again, this is Kansas we're talking about. Long story long: This is actually for 1.5 experiences. My girlfriend came here with her small group and had some bubble tea, bringing me back some noodles for dinner. They were bacon noodles with bell peppers and green onions. But BACON!!!! The noodles were good too. She also brought me an almond milk tea with tapioca and it was good but I thought it was too sweet. She was craving the bubble tea, so we decided to come here for lunch this past weekend. The place itself was a nice space and could seat a lot of people. I recognized the host from school, but I don't know him know him, so I didn't say hi. We were seated right away and within a minute, our server showed up to our table with waters, asking if there was anything else we wanted to drink. She ordered a red bean green tea smoothie with the tapioca balls and I got an almond milk tea with tapioca. I asked if they were able to make it less sweet since it was too sweet the first time. I eventually ordered the "Chinese style pot roast" over noodles and my girlfriend got the wonton noodle soup. We also got an order of the pork dumplings and an order of the chicken dumplings, both pan fried style. The dumplings came out first served with a little bowl of soy sauce loaded with a ton of chopped green onions, like seriously, it was kind of like "would you like soy sauce with your green onions?" I tried both and both were good and had a good fry on them. They make them well here. I would definitely order both again but I slightly preferred the pork over chicken. The entrees came out and it smelled good, but I thought the presentation was rather on the simple side. I mean, it was just my pot roast on top of thick cut noodles, garnished with julienned carrots and just a sprinkle of green onions. Perhaps they could have used some of the green onions from the soy sauce for the dumplings on my entree. I just wanted some more veggies. But there 4 generous pieces of meat, and they easily broke apart with my chopsticks, so I knew they were going to be good. Overall I really liked this dish and I would be interested in getting it again as a noodle soup. My girlfriends wonton noodle soup was good too. The wonton was made well and had good flavor, and the broth was good, but I thought I had detected something like ginseng in it, which would be interesting. Our drinks were good. Mine was definitely less sweet, but it was just the way I liked it. My girlfriends smoothie was really good. I may need to order that for myself next time. Our waters were never empty, which most of you should know is a very big deal for me. The bill, especially for lunch, was quite high, so that's definitely something to watch when here. But I would definitely return.

I went here on a whim for dinner tonight and wasn't really in the mood to try something new, but I'm glad I did. We started off with the fried tofu with "awesome sauce" as an appetizer. Mind you - I had never had tofu before and was a little skeptical of trying it to begin with, but it was pretty amazing. A little crunch mixed with the sauce (sweet & sour with green onion, cilantro, red pepper...not sure what else was in it, but it really was amazing) made for a pretty great combination. I was torn between trying the ginger basil chicken and pork and shitake mushroom dish, and the waiter recommended the chicken with the noodles. I wasn't disappointed. Big chunks of thigh meat, basil leaves, a piece of ginger, and cucumbers with carrots to garnish the plate (it actually looked like there were eyes staring at me while I ate it). So here's the breakdown: Pros: Cheap ($12-14 for a plate that will give you more than one meal.) Clean Good for dates, kids, get-togethers, etc. Friendly, prompt service Bubble tea - if you're into that kind of thing Cons: Parking can be a little tough since it's mixed in with all the other restaurants, but it's really not too bad. That's all I can come up with. This place really was pretty great and I will definitely go back.

It doesn't matter which location I go to, both are above and beyond. Obviously the owners are perfectionists because this restaurant is always consistent. It is truly one of our best restaurants in KC. Staff is friendly and efficient, food is consistently amazing no matter what you get. It never fails, and I've been a regular customer for years.

I love this place. A real gem in Johnson County for tasty, reasonably priced Chinese/fusion grub. Have had the dumplings many times, the stir fry dishes, and the noodle dishes. Always delicious. And what I especially enjoy about Blue Koi is how dang friendly and accomodating all of their staff are. The owner is at the front of the house quite often, and they will bend over backwards to help you get a table, even when you arrive with a large party and no reservations. Highly recommended Asian fusion in Johnson County.

This is a favorite stop for my friends and I after our Thursday evening knitting group. The crispy tofu and awesome sauce are great, always crispy and the awesome sauce should be served with everything because it is amazing. Another favorite of mine is the ginger basil chicken with noodles and the shrimp pan seared dumplings!!

One of my family's favorite restaurants! The menu isn't what I was used to growing up eating at Chinese restaurants here in the states, but my daughter who's lived in and travelled throughout China insists it's more authentic than most Chinese restaurants in town. All I know is the food is great, the service is warm and attentive and they have bubble tea! What more could you want?!

We have been to this location a few times. Our first impression was a great one....cause we went back. We liked the crispy tofu, but believe that it is the spicy awesome sauce that made it. We had the Chinese pot roast and the fire bird (duck). All of the items were enjoyed. However, on subsequent visits, we were not as happy. The duck was not as "fresh" tasting. We say the duck tasted like duck. We've tried the dumplings, pretty good. The ambiance is nice. Eaten both outdoors and inside....servers were great. However, as our last 2 meal experiences were not as enjoyable, we probably will not return. Heard from others that the other location is better.

We took a group of 4 during a lunch on Friday and had great service. The decor was very nice and the menu was plentiful, although perhaps a little confusing. We started with the China Moon, which was awesome! I had the duck with noodles, which was very tasty. Somebody else had the pot roast and I'm pretty sure it's some of the best he's ever eaten. This place is definitely worth a try!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
