The Java Break although downtown seems to exist in a bubble all to itself. When other coffeeshops and restaurants close for the night, the Java Break is still open serving your favorite hot or cold coffee, Italian sodas, juice drinks, breakfast cereals, and even paninis. Every week I notice something new or funny on the walls and the employees are always friendly and helpfully making suggestions for new drinks and combinations to try. I'm a fan of their old TVs and cartoons that seems to run in a twilight zone-esk loop. When I used to pull all nighters working for the World Company, I could always trust that they'd be open for a quick drink to lift my spirits and re-energize me for a few hours.

I have a lot of fond memories of coming to this local institution with friends as a teenager, and I was glad to see this place hasn't changed too much when I got coffee with my aunt here last week. I was most impressed with the service, which was extremely friendly. Though there is a bit of a trying-to-be-hip vibe here (always has been) the staff made the members of my less-than-cool party feel totally welcome and at ease with enthusiasm and genuine smiles. We sat in the lovely outdoor seating area right above the slightly submerged shop. There are plenty of places to sit, inside and out, and they are all comfortable; a little cramped and sometimes dingy, perhaps, but it's not stuffy or stiff. I used to love the back room, which still has a bookshelf of left-behind texts. The drinks, too, are delicious. I had a Jenny's Julep, a minty chocolatey thing like I used to get as a teen. I'll have to check out the actual brews when I move to Lawrence next year.

I'm big on coffee shops, something about the atmosphere. And believe me, I have been to many. The good thing about Java Break is that it is open 24-7, so for you late night crammers, it's a great place to get some studying done, though it can be packed during finals week. During finals week, I remember having a conversation with a friend via webcam, and was shushed by an employee since everyone was studying for their exams. It's not a library for goodness sakes! I've tried the cereal bar, slightly pricey for cereal and a couple mix-ins, in my opinion. Wi-Fi is not exactly "free." You do have to make a purchase, and then they give you a code to access the Internet for a mere 3-hour period. Either way, they're big sticklers on buying something. So beware of employees coming up and asking you to get something if you hadn't purchased anything yet. There is a $5 minimum to use a credit or debit card, so they suggest you purchase a future drink, and issue you a coupon for your future purchase. There are TONS of coffee shops in Lawrence that practice better customer service. This place should be your last resort if everywhere else is closed.

I've studied a LOT of places, all over KC and surrounding metro over the last 15 years, and this place is cool! Service is awesome, drink was great, sandwich was delicious. All-around wonderful atmosphere. I'll definitely be back.

Won't go here again. The coffee is okay but it cost over $3 for a cup. My budget will not allow it! Will find it cheaper elsewhere!

This is the best local coffee shop in Lawrence. Java Break attracts college students from KU and Baker University who are pulling all-nighters in order to cram for a test or finish a paper. I especially love the cupcakes and the cereal bar. You can mix and match cereal combinations and add whatever you want to them. I like to add chocolate milk to mine! The cupcakes are also build-your-own. You can mix and match cupcake flavors and icing. Then, you can ice it yourself. 24/7 and great coffee? You just can't beat it.

Our first visit, we had a cappuccino, latte, and a bacon, egg and cheese breakfast panino to start Christmas Eve Eve day, paying just $10 for the whole shebang. The Java Break has friendly service and four large rooms perfect for studying while ingesting some much needed caffeine while studying or an early morning breakfast with your (my) sweety. The place may seem small from the outside, but it's not. They have fair prices and we will be back again soon!

I like Java Break and it is a cute shop. however, it is frustrating how many times I have gone there in the morning and they have been closed. It is definitely not open 24/7.

Shocked...I was shocked with bright lights and how clean the Java Break was during my last visit. Yes, back in the day, I used to frequent Java Break almost daily. This was before the "dreaded" Starbucks opened on Mass. This was when everyone in Lawrence had a favorite coffee haunt. Mine was Java Break. It was grungy, loud and a bit grumpy like me at the time. But the coffee was delicious and reasonably priced. Every time I would get back to Lawrence, I would stop by to get a cup or even some Cafe Lawrence beans. I think it's been well over four years since I stopped in and as stated I was stopped in my tracks. Where did the dingy, dark and moody place go? Where was the decently strong coffee? I wasn't greeted with a grunt but with "what can I get you folks?" Folks?? Yes...it was nice to be greeted with a friendly smile instead of a sneer. But out with the grunge went my coffee too. We ordered two Cafe Lawrence's to go. It was one of the worst, brown waters I have ever had. Why am I giving The Java Break 3 stars instead of 2? They are open 24 hours which is helpful to underage college students. They did clean up their act. It seems like they cater more to sweet coffee drinks and not on the coffee which might be what the "kids" drink now. As for my beloved Cafe Lawrence? Ugh....I think I grew up and left it behind.

I went here for coffee this morning. I found it somewhat appealing that they are open 24 hours a day but less so that my barista had to ask me how to make a cafe au lait after explaining that she'd been on a 12 hour overnight shift. She gave me a cup of regular coffee (not espresso) with over-steamed milk that simply tasted watery. The homemade blueberry scone was decent. I feel that much like a basic bartender, a barista should at minimum know how to assemble the beverage offerings on the menu. I was disappointed with the product and would likely not return here.

I do have to update. Still love the place for the late night drink however their coffee has gone down hill. It has been tasting burnt and the almond milk is not what I remember. Do love the cereal bar though! Will probably grab coffee somewhere else

It is mind boggling how this place has an overall 3 and a half stars. The quirky aspects like the old TVs with the black and white cartoons, furniture, the drawings on the wall and the music just bring the ambiance all together. It is a great place to hang out with friends and study. The coffee and drinks are great and the cereal bar is a classic. From a students view, this coffee shop is one of the best in town.

The very definition of Lawrence, Kansas-eclectic, eccentric and fun. It offers homemade almond milk (a plus for the lactose intolerant, vegan, paleo, etc.), and an assortment of gluten free treats (the mini cheesecake and peanut butter cookie come to mind). It is faithfully open 24 hours for your early mornings or late nights. The lit outdoor patio is my favorite spot for early morning reading or relaxing.

Its a trip. Anarchic 24 hour basement lair with food. There are smelly people, students, and hipsters. I expected red Lectroids. I looked at the back room and it scared me - not for my first visit. I will work up the courage to find the bathroom [i did - it was just fine], I stuck to the front room and dined in the shadow of the fantastic funky cereal bar. The breakfast panini I had was entirely fantastic. Really good. Cafe au lait worked once the sugar ratio was adjusted - house blend is pretty strong.

This is a really special place. Love the happy hour, love the environment, love the super awesome staff. And whatever you get, ask for whipped cream on top. You won't regret it- it's fresh....

I've been lucky enough to travel the midwest and visit lots of coffee shops. That being said, Java Break is top 3 "WORST" I ever seen, heard, or witnessed first hand! Unbelievably bad service, product, patron rules, and environment. Being a grad student and living in Lawrence and Kansas City over past 30 years, Java Break takes arrogance in the coffee business to a whole new level. Yes, I guess its understandable to have time limit policies for internet usage, but this place is rediculous. They act like this is some great shakes of a java cafe. Since the owner, management or whomever likes to get on here and rebutt reviewers, take a piece of advice: Dont forget who pays your bills.........the freaking consumer you goons! Stop treating your patrons like garbage when its not deserved. I understand not wanting students or vagrants sleeping at the tables, but chill the hell out with some of your other rules. Too many other choices in Lawrence to put up with this garbage. Its not like they serve PT's or any other respectable coffee in this joint. No point in me reviewing the food or drink served at Java Break. Not the worst product ever, but this review is mainly about the service and down right horrible ways they treat customers. The sad thing is, Ive never been crapped on too bad at Java Break. It's the way I and so many others have watched them treat many customers. I'm a positive person by nature, but this place sends off a bad vibe.

Food/drinks - The food and drinks are reasonably priced. The sodas are freaking delicious. Atmosphere - Depending on the time you go can make or break your visit. There are some really creepy people there sometimes.. There is a room with board games and an old school black and white tv. There is a room with a lot of booths and tables that I see people studying at often. There is also a room where you can write anything on the walls with sharpie (bring your own sharpie) ANYTHING.... There are quite a few pornographic cartoons and racist joke up there. I would suggest not going in there with your parents or child... Customer service - Every time, but once that I have gone to Java Break I have been greeted with a condescending glare. A "why the hell are you here" look. I would really suggest these people work on their emotes attitudes. -2 stars because of the horrible employee vibes. I would recommend going in once and checking it out while you enjoy your drink, but from then on stop by for a soda or something and take it with you.

A 1950's style Kansas coffee shop kind of says it all. This place was a little much for me with its Nickeodeon style decor. Coffee, and muffins were okay.

  • Brandon G.

Only place that I can study and not feel like I'm bothering the staff. I noticed a lot of people complaining about the service...but they're comparing it to places that will do anything short of getting on their knees to please you just so they make a $1 tip from you. Java Break's staff is pretty spot on for their clientele...they don't have to tell you how awesome their product is for you or where it's from, you just grab a cup of go-juice and a Wi-Fi code and get your studying done. Oh, and once you're hungry...CEREAL BAR! Sorry they aren't trying to be the most hip-Seattle-dbag coffee shop around. They're a Lawrence staple and have a purpose in our community. Java Break is nothing short of solid gold.

I have been going to Java Break since I discovered Lawrence over 2 years ago, even before I physically moved here! Me and my partner started going in early in the mornings last year to take advantage of the 2 for 1 deal before work when we started realizing that the chia started tasting watered down! eventually after a few months we stopped going. We decided to give it another try last night since its right up the street from home, so we bundles up and walked down in the freezing cold totally looking forward to a once hot chia... both ended up having a weird very strong bitter after taste, my partner thought almost like soap but I did not think that. We threw them away not even half drank, first time in my life I've thrown away a chia! we noticed as we were walking out that the gal in front of us who also ordered a chia threw hers away almost full as well..... very disappointed, we love to support local businesses but not if were not getting at least what we pay for! We will be walking the extra block to Starbucks i guess.....

I'm probably Java Break's biggest fan, return visit punch-card, discount travel mug, the whole she-bang here. My favorite coffee drink is the "Snickers" (hazelnut and chocolate!) but I'm also always up for a Cafe Lawrence or Hazelnut chai when it's their seasonal special. It's my favorite casual hangout and my favorite draw for the place is definitely the graffiti room. I patiently wait for the yearly repaint (usually in January) so I can do a big piece by the door. This has been a tradition with my friends for years now, and I'm going to miss it when I finish school and move on. the graffiti room is a perfect place to hang out with artistically inclined friends whether you're contributing to the walls or not. It's the perfect place to bring a sketchbook or even a watercolor set and draw some inspiration from other people's work! I do miss back when they had smaller and more personal tables rather than the bench seating now, but I can also see how that can fit more people into the room for business. They also have tiny cheesecakes that are 100% amazing!!

Best place to study in Lawrence, bar none. This cozy little place has a very off the wall, and very Lawrencey, vibe to it. Try one of the specialty drinks while you're there,. if you can get it between 7-10 am, it's half priced. Definitely beats 5 bucks for a shot of energy from the Starbucks across the street. I would suggest the LT Dan. The coffee is amazing, but the cereal bar is by far the most original thing that sets this 24 hr coffee shop apart from the rest. Pick your cereal, pick your topping, and your milk, and you have a creation to call your own.

It's three stars, and they're solid. And I'll keep coming here. No, it's not four, it's not five, and it's not a two star joint. This is correct, and here's why: this place is open 24 hours a day. You may be able to get a decent cup of joe here at 10:00 a.m., or 8:00 a.m., but it's true value to the city is it's the only place to get a respectable cup if you've been up partying until 3:00 a.m., in which case you won't know the difference. The coffee at 3:00 a.m., or 4-6 a.m. if you're headed to catch an early flight at KCI or some other God forsaken reason to be up at that time of time--is passable, served by a kid that *really* needed a job and it allows them study time (ie., KU student). It's a dive, it's sort of dirty, and people love it. I do too. 'tis what it 'tis, an all night joint. You don't expect to get a 4-5 star bowl of pasta in a restaurant at 2:00 a.m. and you shouldn't expect the coffee at an all nighter to be anything but middle of the road. Still, darn glad this place is open. It's like the best thing you can be doing at 4:00 a.m., well, unless you're 21 and going to school on mom and dad's nickel.

I've been there twice because they were the only coffee shop open at that hour... both times the baristas were straight up rude! The first time I arrived, I went to set my stuff down to claim a table and the barista followed me over to the table and "scolded" me like a child for not buying a drink before I sat down. It was embarrassing and unnecessary. Amazingly cool concept, horrible staff.

I grew up around Lawrence and never considered the Java Break to be a "hidden gem" or anything of the sort. Usually it's the hipsters and younger crowd who claim that this is the "IT" spot for good coffee... And I'd have to disagree. I've yet to go into that place and have an employee seem genuinely interested in what I'm ordering, much less when I plan on ordering. I usually have to wait for a time that's convenient for them, IE: at the end of their conversation, after dishes have been rinsed, etc. My overpriced drink was less than impressive. Without getting downright rude, like the staff, I'll keep it at this: Avoid this shithole.

I stopped in here late one evening after a Royals game (June 25th) for biscuits and gravy. A great late night snack they have. Been getting it here off and on for years. I left after about 30 minutes. There was no one on duty when I walked in. The sign said they were on a "nature break," but no one was in the place. I remembered two guys headed out the door (both in aprons) as I was coming in. After about 20 minutes they came in, made a fancy coffee for them selves and retired to the back of the house to chat. Once someone looked out, did not seem to notice or care I was sitting by the door ( i thought they had seen me come in) and they went back to talking. I left after another 10 minutes or so. I figured they weren't really into customers, so what the hell. It's too bad, I'm seeing more and more of this kind of customer service, (not) thing around town these days. Might not go here for a while. Don't like being ignored when I'm really hungry.

  • Kelsey H.

Java Break, because of its WiFi, booths with outlets, outstanding coffee and 24/7 availability, has probably helped countless KU students actually graduate. It's a staple of the Lawrence experience. You can get your drink as plain or as fancy as you wish. I like the kahlua syrup drink, hot or cold. There's also sandwiches, cupcakes and a cereal bar there if you need a nosh. The patio is comfortable and relaxing, while the front room is a good place to see and be seen. If you're more into studying, find a booth or table in the back and plug your laptop in. I and most other people I know have pulled at least one, and often several, late-night work sessions. I will say that much of its grungy, graffitied charm disappears once you graduate. All the more reason to make the most of it while you're there.

I believe this is the only 24 coffee shop in Lawrence, at least a place you can sit down. I particularly like the morning happy hour--inexpensive good quality as I make the trek on I-70. The handy cereal containers make for a quick breakfast or opt for a cupcake. I think they are the quickest barristas in town. They get you your order quickly. Heck, I've even left the car running while I run in they are that quick.

I love the Lawrence Slammer coffee. I also love that it's open all night. It's an interesting atmosphere with great food as well.

  • Howard G.

Overall, I am sad to say I am not impressed. The atmosphere, while most definetaly hipsteresque(as judged by stunned glance) is not something to write home about. The coffee is meh at best and tasted like warm "Premium Folgers"(Does that even exist? If it did, I imagine the coffee tastes like Java Breaks) Better yet, coffee that is lesser than Starbucks costs about twice as much ($4, ya' kidding me?!) I tried doing some work since it was late one night and I needed coffee and quiet place. The only good thing about Java Break is being open 24 hours. I will continue to enjoy my Starbucks at home.

  • Eric B.

Pros: Great tables and booths to work at. Friendly service from the staff. Con: Internet usage is timed. Edit: Please see the below response for the internet usage policy. It's a good venue to send some email or work on a paper late at night, but there are more economical venues in the area during the day that offer free internet access.

Let me tell you why this place deserves five stars. 1. Open 24 hours. This is Lawrence, it's either this or the KU library. The coffee is OK. But who cares? Buy a cup of whatever and sit down to do whatever you have to do thanks to the free wifi. Hipsters, weirdos, nerds...all in there. 2. Everybody is welcome. If you give this place 2-3 stars because of the service or quality of the coffee, you need to get your head out of your you-know-what. Yeah, there are cereals and baked goods and sandwiches...blah blah. Whatever. My favorite thing, though? 6-10am half price drinks. Some over-chocolated coffee concoction is always a nice reward after pulling an all-nighter in THE ONLY PLACE IN LAWRENCE THAT IS OPEN 24 HOURS.

  • Clarice W.

I feel like the Java Break is the type of place I would have went when I was a college student, which is exactly why, once I put my nostalgic fondness aside, I have to give it 2 stars. It's dirty, grungy, and smells a little moldy inside. I have no idea whether the tables or chairs have ever been cleaned and it has a faint scent of unshowered students pulling all-nighters. The interior is composed of several quirky, graffiti-ed rooms that would have looked cool at some point in my life but look a little shady now. The coffee drinks are too sweet, the chais have an odd synthetic syrupy flavor, the paninis look and taste of cardboard, and I don't even dare try the baked goods because they look old. That being said, they offer games, it's open 24 hours and, hey - if you are a student in need of a late-night energy boost, The Java Break is probably perfect for you.

This is the place where I can work in the late night. I usually drink hot Americano and it is okay. I can give four stars but this place is dirty and the toilet, sometimes, is super dirty. If the owners read my comment, please please please clean it much more frequently.

  • Carrie H.

This is your typical hipster, dirty coffeeshop that fills with college kids pretending to do their homework, but really just checking out everyone else. It reminded me of the places I used to go at the same age. When you're too young to hit a dive bar (or too poor for a fake i.d), but want to be seen socially--you visit a place like java break. Like any great coffee place, this place offers free wi-fi, has sandwiches, baked goods and non-caffeinated alternatives. But even better, it's 24 hours. I would have killed for a 24 hour coffee place like this (I had to settle for Denny's, pissing off the waitress by ordering only the endless cup of coffee...) Though, I'm not sure what this place is like at 3am...

    (4)
  • Patrick S.

The old smell in this place consumes the smell of delicious coffee. I was taken back by the mildew smell inside. Besides that, the drinks are pretty good. The lattes are O.K. The decor is awesome :)

  • Tara T.

The baristas here are assholes. I understand that Java Break wants to have paying customers, but I was getting iffy last summer when they made you start paying for wireless by the amount of money you spend there. For instance, if I bought a regular size coffee, I would get a pass for about 2 hours of internet. That's it. To get more internet for say, studying purposes, at one of the only 24 hour places in town, you would have to keep buying either food or coffee every couple of hours. I don't know about you, but I don't need 3 coffees and 2 cookies between 8pm-2am. It's ridiculous. Second of all, beware that they have their own kitchen--and will kick you out if you bring in any outside food. Regardless if you bought something from Java Break already. I was incredibly insulted when I made a simple mistake bringing in a sandwich for dinner in preparation for hours of studying (and purchases) to be embarrassed by an employee loudly for bringing in outside food and asking to "eat outside the front door". Sorry Java Break, I've had it with you. For such a seemingly fun atmosphere, business standards are way too strict, especially for a college town. They've now lost hundreds of dollars in business from me and my friends who I tell never to visit Java Break again.

  • Jacob B.

Java Break and I have this really strange relationship. I have been going there for coffee since I was 13, and it seemed to be the place to drink coffee at if you were a teenager. While I have (thankfully) grown out of being a teenager, Java Break really hasn't. It's awkward, it's loud, and despite its best efforts to appear to be so hip it hurts, it's varied clientele exposes it for what it really is--gasp--a place with mass appeal. Thursday through Sunday you'll still get late night waves of kids coming in, getting loud and getting caffeinated. Monday through Friday you will get the after school crowd from Central Junior High just a few blocks down Mass St. This makes finding a quiet time to get coffee (and maybe study) here difficult. If you set aside the customer base, and the dreary looking interior, and focus on the drinks you will be pretty satisfied. I can honestly say that all of their coffee drinks and Italian sodas are worth a try. I am a fiend for iced coffee and of the entire menu, I love their honey-iced espresso the most. So long as the person making it doesn't go crazy with the honey it is the perfect summer drink that isn't a gin and tonic. Go for the coffee, don't stay for the atmosphere.

24 hours, al fresco dining. Solid panini, solid coffee. I can see why some folks call it pretentious, but hey, it's just a coffee shop in a college town in Kansas. Did I mention 24 hours...nice!

  • Aaron B.

This business is a Lawrence Icon. As one of the first Coffee Shops in town it has evolved quite a bit over the years. However whats always consistant is its the only 24/7 Coffee House in town and is a great place for studying. Its social atmosphere makes it a great place for a gathering of friends or to make some new ones.

  • Steven B.

If you think this place is too "hipstery", you have serious problems. For starters, there are only about 3 people in KS that would possibly qualify as hipster, and they are way to busy wearing non prescription glasses and looking bored and cool and drinking PBR somewhere we've never heard of (or possibly at a concert for an underground band). The only clientele I've ever met are the staff (humanities majors from KU / drop outs from KU who can't seem to move on) which are generally nice and fun, and college kids. If that isn't your 'scene' then don't gripe because you go to a coffee shop in a college town and find students procrastinating. Gasp! The horror, the horror! They have wifi, they have good coffee (especially the espresso drinks), they are always open, and you can linger as long as you want. If that doesn't sound like a good way to completely waste several hours, then there is no pleasing you. Going to Java Break is great because it's dingy and low key, just like your own apt, so you can ostensibly go out, while basically staying at home drinking coffee.

If I were to have written this three years ago, Java Break probably would have ended up with two stars. It's cleaned up its act. The atmosphere certainly has improved. Except for the graffiti room, which is what it is, the place has been redone since I originally left for the East Coast. The decor has improved (it's not particularly great, but it's far better than it used to be). More importantly, the drinks have improved markedly, too. I always remember being thoroughly underwhelmed by the coffee I used to get there. Now, I'm rather pleased with the quality. It's not as good as La Prima Tazza, but it's more than sufficient. The food ... I haven't tried a panini there in ages. The cupcakes are quite yummy. I've been meaning to try the new cereal bar, but that hasn't happened yet. They got rid of their hummus plate, which earns a thumbs down. Free wifi is quite good too. With the improvements, I'm finding myself frequenting Java Break more than ever.

Best coffee in lawrence, ks! This is a great place if you're looking to have a drink or small snack, sit-back and relax, study, or have a laid-back conversation with someone. In this little underground coffeeshop you'll find people of all sizes, shapes, colors and walks of life. It's a well-rounded shop with great coffee!

I used to go to Java Break all the time when I lived in Lawrence. Now I only get to go sporadically when I visit from KC. If I visit Lawrence though, I WILL be stopping by Java Break. There is a lot of room for private conversation. You can sit at a table, a counter, on a couch or in front of a tv set. I like that there are a lot of non-coffee options and food. I would reccommend stopping by. They have my absolute favorite hot chocolate (and the whipped cream is real, not like the crap from a can). I was in Lawrence for 24 hours this weekend, and went twice because they are awesome.

I've been a fan of the Java Break for about 15 years now. A lot of things have changed - I remember when there was seating upstairs, and when what is now the 'graffiti' room was the library. Ah, memories. Decent coffee, great drinks (Midnight Silk is my favorite), and now they have a cereal bar. Awesome. Free WiFi with purchase. I remember when they started getting really tough on people coming in and not buying anything. When I was 17 I thought it was unreasonable, but now it doesn't bother me as much. In any case, it's a great place to get a cup of coffee and hang out with friends or just lounge with a drink and read a book for a while.

Your non-corporate choice in Lawrence! This place is full of character. There are four separate seating areas, plus a garden for sitting outside and chatting with friends or smoking. The decor is kitschy--I'm sure if your grandmother still has that Felix the cat clock it would easily find a new home here. Definitely Starbuck's arch enemy! People are themselves here not clones. You'll find unique creations here...and not just coffee. My favorite is the Hummus...a nice break from the bag of chips or energy bars found at most places. Baked goods are awesome...though I still miss the baked biscotti. I also like getting the breakfast panini's anytime day or night. Some people really rave about the 15 or so Italian Soda's but I'm not a sweet fan. I also think they are the only place in town that actually *makes* their Chai rather than getting it from the box. Best feature is how fast they are! Only got 90 seconds to get in and get out...this people hustle! For those traveling, it has 3 stations for checking email. A nice Mac cybercafe. The crowd is younger...lots of students studying and mooching off the free wireless. Not a suit and tie crowd, though you'll get a large number of the staff from the World Company eating there (Sunflower, Geeks, and Journal World). Like any college town business, the staffing is sometimes inconsistent, though when a staff member is rude, I rarely see them the next time I get coffee ---the person is gone quickly. Pros: Eclectic bohemian environment conducive to long chats about philosophy and existentialism. Republicans need not apply! Cons: Like to see more consistency in the homemade bakery items (my Mom was just as bad about her bakery items!). Staffing typical of a college town--just because you flunked your final doesn't mean I need your 'tude.

This place is too dirty for me, and I generally like independent coffeeshops--I'm not expecting it to be Starbucks. I'm not talking about a little local coffeehouse grime--I'm talking, "yuck, gross, I don't want to breathe the air in here." I haven't been in for a while, but the staff were generally rude, and the coffee tastes like dirt. For me to go here again, La Prima Tazza, Henry's, and The Pig would all have to go out of business or be burned to the ground.

Watch out for cockroaches. Good place for studying if you hate studying at home. Frou-frou coffee and non coffee drinks as well as your typical cup of coffee.

Love the Grunge look, don't care for the Grunge coffee that tastes kinda weak all 'round. But who can beat the 24-7, infinite couched out space? Yeah yeah yeah

Java Break is a definite Lawrence original and a really cool place to hang out. The coffee is excellent, especially the espresso, mochas and mixed drinks, and I personally think they have the best homemade baked goods of any coffeehouse in Lawrence, especially the chocolate chip cookies and muffins. They also have grilled sanwiches that are damn tasty. The vibe is definitely "college-y" and artistic/intellectual, but I am way beyond my college years and still really feel welcome and enjoy myself there. I would highly recommend giving JB a try. A couple side notes, Java Break is open 24 hours, very nice for the owl crowd, and they have a cool outdoor area, like a litte garden which is nice when the Kansas weather cooperates.

Decent coffee. Lots of college kids study here. OK if you can get used to the filth and the urine stench coming from the homeless guys that come in to pass out in the bathroom.

This is one of my favorite places in Lawrence to go when I'm working on homework or just meeting friends. I've had their hot chocolate, chai tea, and espresso and enjoyed all of it! They also have a cereal bar and good biscuits and gravy. My favorite thing to get is the blackberry matrimonials or the cupcakes you put your own frosting and sprinkles on. Whether you are hungry, needing caffeine, or just need a place to crash and get stuff stuff done, this is a great place to go 24 hours a day.

Java Break is everything a dirty underground 24 hour coffee shop should be. it is like the basement your parents' never had, only it serves cupcakes and scones and panninis and delicious italian sodas which are what a milkshake would taste like if it was a soda. they also have coffee i hear. i love the big booths and being able to spread out, or sitting on a wacky velvet couch just talking, no matter the time. it is good to know that if it 4am and you need espresso, there is a place for you.

Danger, Danger, Danger; three warnings is more than enough. This is a 150% hipster hang out. This place was my friends and our hangout until it become super hipsterlized. FOOD - Coffee 5/10 AMBIANCE --- 6/10 SERVICE --- 2/10 OVERALL --- 5/10
