All right, Burger Stand, WTF. Came here again last night and ordered a couple burgers. When they come out I look down at my basket and do a double take - there's this little green THING, sitting next to my burger. On closer look I realize it's a pickle. No, it's not a pickle - it's PART of a pickle - or perhaps an even more accurate description is that it's PART of a part of a pickle. I was served probably 1/10 of a pickle with my burger! This is just insulting. It's kind of like that saying, if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all? IF YOU DON'T HAVE A FULL PICKLE TO SERVE DON'T SERVE ANYTHING AT ALL. I find this pathetic and unacceptable. Also, the goulash burger was oversalted and overacidic. I don't recommend it. The chili burger is just meat on top of more meat and it lacks the complexity that I liked about this place to begin with. You're safer sticking with the regular menu options. Paired with the disgusting duck fat fries I was served last time (see previous review) The Casbah is down to a solid 3 stars for me now.

I was very excited to have lunch here. Duck fat fries; fancy burgers and sandwiches; a plethora of condiments. But ultimately, I was very disappointed. The flavor profiles just weren't there. Rather bland and blah

Went here for lunch the other day and had the Original burger with a side of sweet potato fries. Yum and yum. The burger was simple, with just a slice of delicious Vermont cheddar and local greens adorning it. The fries were probably in my top 5 sweet potato fries I've ever had. My friend ordered the bacon wrapped frog legs, and I tried a bit of them - very, very good. Service was fine, we found a table immediately upstairs. It's on the spendy side, but every once in awhile when I've craving a really good burger, this is the place I'll be.

OH my heavens. How can a place have such mixed reviews in my mind?? The food [most of it] was seriously delicious. Did you catch the foreshadowing there? I ordered a chicken sandwich which arrived partially UNCOOKED. It was so dim inside that I couldn't even tell until I was probably halfway to two-thirds through with my sandwich? I am telling myself that I truly didn't ingest raw chicken. When my hubby took it to the chef (we were seated right by the kitchen) to complain, she threw it at one of the other cooks and swore at him. She sent us downstairs to get a full refund--which they did! Two sandwiches, fries, drinks, everything. Now that is a great policy, above and beyond. That said, the food that everyone ELSE in our party got, was phenomenal. I won't let my one bad experience keep me from recommending this place to others.

Sitting here not eating because we have been waiting for our food for over :45 since we ordered (not to mention the line we waited in before ordering.) So even of this is the nirvana of burgers, it just can't possibly be worth it. WTF??!! I understand the line... But how the heck long does it take to drop fries and grill 3 burgers?????????

The burgers and fries are to die for! Especially the truffle fries, yum! I also like that you can pick your sauces/amounts and even take it to go! I also like that I get to refill my drink, I'm impatient with servers! The wait might be a bit, but it's worth it!

I used to eat these burgers years ago at Dempsey's. finally got to try them again on my roadtrip from denver to Miami. Still fantastic. One of the top 2 or 3 burgers I've ever eaten. Duck fat fries = amazing. Highly recommend.

Ah, burgers for the discerning type. You will get fed here and fed well. The portions are extremely generous; even the side-sized orders of fries are enough to put you over the top. The menu is very elegant and streamlined. I'm a fan of the classic with a side of truffle fries, but I've also done the Black and Blue (with maytag cheese and apple chutney) and the smoke burger (bacon, gouda and chipotle ketchup). All were delicious. Vegetarians can get burgers made from lentil, tofu or falafel, or a salad. There's also a hot dog range. I'd say the fries -- classic, smoked tofu, duck fat, truffle, poutine or sweet potato -- are the ace up the sleeve. Ridiculously good-tasting. There's also onion rings and fried pickles, plus a good kids' menu. The beer list is nifty. The Burger Stand has also crafted combos based on a specific beer, burger and fries triumvirate. Helpful when trying to make up your mind. Bottom line: some of the best burgers in the city.

Finally decided to see what all the hype was about and now I know. This was easily one of the best meals I've ever had. The burger was cooked very well and very delicious. My family likes burgers cooked different ways. My mom prefers medium rare while I like mine a little more done. They did both levels very well. The fries are beyond amazing. We've tried the truffle and duck fat fries and both are beyond anything I've had before. The place can get a little pricey but totally worth it for the quality. Also just another fun bit. The guy calling out the orders that were ready kept us laughing and smiling with his added flare to it.

For the price I was very unpleased with the "suppose" to best burger in town/Kansas. The burgers them selves were not bad but were not the best I have had in Lawrence or Kansas. We also got the truffle fries. These were also subpar to the truffle fries I have had else were. Dempsey's here in Lawrence and Yard House at the Legends both have better truffle fries. Maybe it was a bad day for the cooks but regardless I will not be returning.

For what it is, it's hard to beat. What it isn't, is a classic burger joint. It is a tourist attraction and worth every penny. Wish the meat was fresh. Love the truffle fries.

If you like your burger supposedly cooked medium but really has raw spots and cold then this is your place. I ordered the Smoke Burger with Applewood smoked bacon, smoked Gouda and chipotle cocoa ketchup. The bun was hot, the cheese was barely melted and the patty was cold. My husband was told when he took it up to the grill person "it was just taken off the grill and possibly the ketchup lowered the temperature". Are you joking? The patty was put back on the grill and it didn't really help. There were still raw spots in the burger so I pulled the burger apart and ate it in pieces. Now, the sweet potato fries were amazing. They were perfectly fried with a great brown sugary seasoning. The basket is huge even when sharing. I'm really sad that the meal overall wasn't good or great. I didn't go to a burger place to eat amazing fries. I love the Casbah's look with the exposed stone and brick walls. They have done a lot to use the space well. The upper area with a pool table, couch and tables is a nice space to "get away" from the busyness of the lower level. But, this isn't enough for me to go back again.

This place makes amazing, creative, tasty burgers and sides. Not your average burger joint!! Loved all the choices and the flavor combinations. Worth the wait on a crowded Saturday in Lawrence for lunch!

I was recommended this place from a friend, since I am not from this area. Walking in the place was darkly lit with a huge bar area on the left, seating on the right and a line in the middle to take your order. The menu is decently sized with great descriptions and prices were in the range of 7-12 dollars, with vast options for drinks and fries. They have items for meat eaters and vegetarians with tofu burgers. I ordered the original, and about 15 minutes later my order was called up and done. Seating is a bit scattered so options are there if you want a booth, bar, tall stools, and seating up top. The burger was huge and juicy. Buns looked homemade because I've never seen that type of bun used. It could be a bit wider to accommodate the large beef patty. The buns were buttered top and bottom. It was topped with Swiss cheese and looked like cilantro. First bite was great, full of flavor, juicy, pink in the middle. Some people don't like that, but it's necessary to get the full flavor out of the beef. Don't worry you won't get sick or anything. The fries I had were the truffles which were so tasty and had a bunch if different dipping sauces. Drinks they serve soft drinks, alcohol, and water. The fridge behind the register has tons of different drinks and even had Coke Classic in the 12 oz bottles from Mexico. Overall this is the best burger I've had in a while. Highly recommend this place over any chain.

Best burger I've ever had, hands down. Duck Fat fries and Truffle Oil fries were fantastic! Burger was so juicy and well-seasoned, I didn't put anything else on it. Delicious!

Now let me tell you about my experience with this place. We visit Lawrence on a regular basis to see friends who live there and I can't stress this enough that these are people we have known for a while who know Larrytown very well. I'm sure they mentioned this place a few times but it always sounded like some regular burger joint and never crossed my mind when it came time to contemplate noms. So about a month ago, I was chatting and this friend mentions truffle fries which perked me up like a prairie dog spotting the second coming. After a short conversation about the origin of these fries, he mentions that they also have duck fat fries and I preceded to check the online menu. I was gob smacked to say the least. The very next time we were there, I insisted on trying them and my search for a great burger place came to an end. I insisted on ordering their duck fat fries because it's DUCK FAT FRIES, plus an order of their onion rings because I always have to try those at any new place. When it came time to order a burger, I was set on the smoke burger. When I read the words smoked gouda cheese and chipotle-cocoa ketchup, I wasn't leaving without it. The fries were magnificent and the burger was just simply wonderful. It tickled me that the burger with it's combination of smoked gouda and chipotle-cocoa ketchup and bacon reminded me so much of a sloppy joe flavor wise, and the burger was cooked perfectly med rare and was so juicy and tender. I can't wait to try everything on their menu.

My wife & I make a habit of visiting here on most trips to Lawrence. We were blown away the first time we had a burger (here) that tasted like a BURGER! Mmmmmmmm. I won't mention the great selection of fries, they're good but go for the burgers. It's called Burger Stand. Only negatives: quality is not consistent and in the new location on Mass it can be a little cramped. There is outside seating but it is in the alley, not a plus or a minus.

If you enjoy getting a big sloppy mess of burger and fries in a basket, this place is for you. I kind of think the Burger Stand did better when they were at Dempsey's in Lawrence. The burgers are slightly overrated - they are HUGE, very thick, pretty greasy, and sometimes the toppings can get outrageous. I really dislike soggy buns and if you don't scarf down what you've got in front of you, then it'll be soggy pretty quick. The fried pickles are pretty good - I've had better though. Overall the place is OK - I've definitely had better.

I ate here for the first time last night, after yelping around town for a place with burgers and sweet potato fries and was VERY SATISFIED! I sat at the bar and the bartender Shannon was very friendly, and knowledgable. She made a great recommendation on a double stout I hadn't had before and it was a hit as well. If I ever come back to Lawrence, I'll be stopping in for sure. Now stop reading this and get over there! ~Gino

Had the Romesco Veggie burger and I'd give it 4 thumbs up if I had 4 hands! It was packed full of flavor and tasted fresh. I cleaned my plate and wanted more even though I was stuffed. Only thing I didn't like were the pickled green beans served with it. I don't want to repeat what others have already stated. I tried all the fries, my friends are nice and share. My favorite were the sweet potato ones. Crispy with a hint of cinnamon, but not sweet. All the beef eaters in my group were very happy with their burgers. Tips: If you want to chat and see daily light while you eat then sit on the main or upper level. We sat downstairs because it was busy. It was dark and loud down there. It was very difficult to hold a conversation over the music. But it'd be a good atmosphere if you're there to watch a game as they have a big screen down there and full bar service. Also don't order as a large group unless you have to pay together. It took our food almost 40 minutes on a Sunday at 2pm. The place wasn't slammed, but I suspect it really took so long because we had 10 burgers on our order. I'll definitely come back next time I'm in Lawrence. Good Eats!

I have been back to the Burger Stand so many times since my first review. I have come to love the fire burger (very spicy, beware!) so much, it's a little wrong. Truly, their burgers are some of the best I've ever had -- and I have eaten many a burger in my time. They are cooked perfectly, and the meat is just so beefy and tender, yet robust. I have gotten over my fixation on their price. It's so darn good, I don't care that it's $8. They have added a wonderful condiment bar with about 8 different sauces for fry-dipping. Fries and the sauces could be a meal in themselves. Love! Also, I enjoy grabbing a beer here, as they have a great selection, and both the bar and the upstairs are great spots to hang and gab with a friend. Plus, if you sit at the bar and decide that you're hungry, the bartender delivers your burger to you. You don't have to move your butt outta your seat. I have to be Debbie Downer for a second: I saw the health inspection results on this place and was so disappointed to see that they aren't running a tight ship in the kitchen. If you don't want to know, don't look it up. The food is still great!

The best burger in town! Just a classic burger is very delicious. Tons of sauce available to choose from the sauce bar. Truffle fries are so good too!

The deluxe burger is a tricky thing to get right -- it has to include unique combinations of ingredients while maintaining a certain "hamburgerness" -- a trait that can quickly get lost in the deluxing process. The Burger Stand at the Casbah successfully hits this mark, managing to make several unique burgers that all satisfy one's burger craving. The menu selection isn't extensive, so there's not a lot different to try, but there are enough quality choices that you won't get bored easily. The prices are comparable to a burger from a restaurant, though I find The Burger Stand's tastier; burgers are their specialty and it shows. They use fresh, interesting ingredients that really combine well with the taste of the meat. They verge on being just a little too messy, but 2 out of 3 times they'll hold together well enough to eat without trouble. The fries are also good and the portions are large enough that you can easily split them between two or three people. The service is also good with friendly employees and a not-too-long wait time. If you're downtown and want a quick, nice meal, The Burger Stand at the Casbah is one of the best places to try. Review: 4.5 stars.

I'm going to go against the grain here because if I were to summarize my review into one word it would have to be "inconsistent". When The Burger Stand is on they are a five-star burger (if such a thing exists); however, when they're off they are an unsatisfactory waste of a $7-9 burger. Their default preparation temperate is medium but their kitchen is so inconsistent that it's rare to actually receive one. Expect a rare or over-cooked burger and you're expectations will be set correctly. Again, when they hit the mark it's amazing but I find myself disappointed 9 out of 10 times eating here. I still eat there chancing that the moons will align and my burger will come out cooked correctly. Also, they win for most disgusting homemade pickles. They are apparently so proud of that most of the veggies on their salads are pickled with the same technique. I have eaten here with dozens of friends and I've never met someone that likes either their pickles or their salads because there is too much pickling. Despite my frustrations with their kitchen quality, their staff is friendly, their drink specials are great with stiff pours, and their truffle oil fries are amazing. Le sigh.

I am originally from Kansas City and when I return for a visit I get all that is good about it! We went on a little day trip out to Lawrence and Mass St. Great area! Shopping, drinking, and eating! This place is a quintessential college dive bar/restaurant, but with a few hidden surprises! Duck Fat Fries! What? Amazing! I tried the Black and Blue burger with Apple Chutney! Again...amazing. This burger first off is HUGE! Perfectly cooked and messy as hell! The chutney is served cold on the warm burger and the combination of the blue cheese and the chutney flavors is unique! We also ordered the duck fat fries (mostly because I had seen it on Top Chef)! WORTH IT! One order is plenty for three people! Top off your lunch with a Schlitz and you have yourself a feast. It's an order at the counter then pick it up joint. This place will be packed on any given day. They have great daily specials. Parking can be a little crazy on the weekends.

Game the system. Here is how to do it. If you have been here a few times before, you'll likely know what you will want to order. Then get in line to place your order. They'll call your name, when it's ready for you to pick up. But if it is your first time, you'll likely want service. There are many interesting choices on the menu, so you may wish to try a few and get a couple of drinks. Going back and forth into that line can be a pain. The easy solution is to sit at the bar. You'll then have a waiter, who will serve you. But the most comfortable seating is the booths. So how can you sit at a booth and get service? Here's the trick. Avoid the order line and first sit at the bar to place your order, so you will get an assigned waiter. If it is not busy when you are there, preferably between lunch and dinner, inform the waiter that you are going to move to a booth. We did that, and he said he'd bring the order to our booth. He did, and from then on he served us other courses and more drinks at our booth. He did mention that he would not have done that, if they had been busier when we were there. The burger choices include an unusually large and interesting number of veggie burger choices, including lentil, falafel, and tofu burgers. All are very good here, but I liked the lentil patties best. If you want a big dinner, ask for the burger salad. You then won't get a bun but will get a large salad with the burger on top. They also have an unusually large number of choices of fries, including sweet potato fries and tofu fries, among others. The tofu fries are an outstandingly healthy choice, but you probably will wish to ask for extra mustard to pick them up. We took some home, put olive oil on them, and fried them more to be crispier: even better. In contrast, the sweet potato fries are really good as is. The wine bottle prices are oddly out of proportion to the wine glass prices. It is definitely better to order by the glass here, especially if you are sitting at the bar. If it is busy and you need to bring your food and drink to your table, you may be willing to pay the price of a bottle to avoid the need to make repeated trips to the order line, but I would not do that. At present, there are no plans for regular table service, but I hope that changes. The waiter who served us, as a result of our bit of trickery, was really excellent, and the food merits table service.

Little crowded, but otherwise good, Duckfat fries are not as weird as I thought and the "Kobe" burger was the best, Kinda pricey, but worth it.

Being from out of town, I got confused about the relationship between this and the Dempsey's Burger Stand and whatever burgers they are still selling at Dempsey's. From what I've been told, this is the original Burger Stand. The menu is the same glorious selections on the chalkboard, plus some new additions. Thank heaven for poutine fries. The truffle fries are also outrageous. The burgers are all fantastic and cooked scrumptiouslescently medium which leaves them very juicy -- really almost more medium rare. This might be my favorite burger place in the United States.

We were told this was one of the best burger places around. Whoever (whomever?) told us was totally right. The food was so good, I gotta talk about it before anything else. I'm not a vegetarian, but I got a black bean burger with pepperjack cheese and roasted poblano salsa and boy, I'm sure glad I did. It was awesome, moist and delicious. I also got a side of sweet potato fries, but I feel like you can never go wrong with those. My friend got the classic burger and I tried a few bites. Heavenly. That's all I can say about it, it was everything a burger should be. We both said it was probably one of the best burgers we had ever had. He got the duck fat fries; I'm not 100% what the hype has been recently with duck fat fries, they were pretty damn good, though. Now that I have paid homage to the food, I can talk about the rest of the experience. The restaurant itself is really cool. They have a bar where you can be waited on by the bartender or you can wait in line and order and seat yourself. The bar was full and we wanted to actually be able to see each other, so we ordered our aforementioned amazingness and found a seat. This place has a couple levels, an loft-like upstairs (where we sat) and even a beer garden downstairs. (This was reserved for video-gamer night....yea.) There were plenty of TVs with ESPN (thank God, I can't miss any of my college basketball) and the place was fairly busy for a Tuesday night. I can't even imagine what it's like on the weekend. This place was casual (although I didn't feel out-of-place in my heels) and very comfortable. Oh, they also had a full bar (always a bonus) and we tried a great new (new to us, at least) beer, Halcyon Wheat, made by a local brewery from Manhattan, KS. Overall, I can honestly say this was one of the most satisfying meals I've had in quite some time.

Tried this place out few times. Burgers are pretty good but you have to buy the fries extra. They have different kinds of seasonings to choose from. The nights I went it was very chill atmosphere, not crowded at all and the food was ready fairly quick. I would say its 3 stars but I am adding an extra star for keeping the kitchen open till midnight.

Do it. Go now. You will not be sorry. Listen to me now and thank me later. Spoiler alert. For those who previously read this review and tried it: Congratulations, you have won it all. The grand burger mountaintop you now stand upon with a feeling of ultimate satisfaction is your reward. I envy you. I wish I could go back to the first time and experience the sensations you are enjoying now. Whitney once said, "give me one moment in time." Regrettably she will not ever have hers...but you just did. You're welcome. Superfluous Addendum: I have recently read a few negative reviews that slam the 'hipsteresque' nature of this business. I am confused by this, as most of these same reviews do not contain a qualitative analysis of the food. I am aware that my above review does not contain a qualitative analysis. My reason for this is that truly kick-ass food needs no analysis...it simply needs to be experienced. In summary, don't be scared away from good food by people who are ultimately afraid of experiencing other people.

This is an upscale burger joint and it's a good one. You don't come here for tofu or wine; you come here for the burgers and fries. If someone in your party isn't a red meat eater, they've got them covered, but IT'S A BURGER JOINT. They've got a nice selection of burgers, grilled to order. The last time there I had the pancetta burger: a generous patty of beef, topped with pancetta, a thick slice of fresh mozzarella and a nice, fresh mixture of tomato and basil. The first time I had their fries, while TBS was at Dempsey's, I made the mistake of getting them to go. Fries are meant to be eaten fresh and hot. TBS's regular fries can hold their own; the upscale versions like the truffle or duck fat fried adds a little something special. My latest visit I took the plunge and tried their rendition of the Canadian diner staple, poutine [putsin]. TBS puts their own spin on this dish, featuring mozzarella curds among the thin cut fries under a nice demi-glace. Great as a side, and it would make a fine meal. (If they ever expand their sides, I'd like to see what they could do with pommes persillade.) Another thing that goes great with burgers is beer. And ale. And stout. TBS has a fine selection on tap, from Free State to Boulevard to Odell to Guinness to New Belgium. If you like a shot with your burger and brew, they do have a full bar. They also have bottled brews, which I didn't explore too deeply after being assured that they do indeed carry Schlitz. The new-old taste that made Milwaukee famous does indeed taste like the beers of my youth. I have forever sworn off lite beer. I almost forgot, the ambiance is fine for a burger joint, a couple of big screen TVs and a pool table in the loft. The bar is OK, more for looks than comfort though, it needs more knee room. I'm guessing the interior designer hasn't sat at too many bars facing straight ahead, eating or drinking alone. I've been on a quest for the ultimate burger for a long time and have eaten my share of good ones. Lately a spate of national upscale burger joints has spread throughout the Kansas City area. No chain can ever be as good as a locally owned and run establishment. The Burger Stand servings are in the top echelon. Now I just have to find more reasons to make the trip to Lawrence. Cooler weather and no road construction should do the trick.

The Burger Stand might as well be the only restaurant in Lawrence, ever type of fries they make are the best ones I've ever tasted. The atmosphere is hipster and the employees are very friendly. My favorite entree is the corn dog which is very underrated

absolutely fantastic burgers. i cant remember what it was called but i got one with bacon and gouda cheese. smoke burger maybe? beer selection was excellent as well. kind of a strange crowd though. i went there in the late afternoon on a week day and there were a couple of drunk maniacs sitting at the bar, clearly trashed. matter of fact, one chick pulled out her boob a few times and asked my opinion of her nipple... if only she was attractive... either way, great burgers, great beer, great service. i'll be back.

I just love this place. There are lots of great dining options in Lawrence, and I really should spread my dining dollars around a bit, but it's hard to neglect The Burger Stand when I come to down. The food is consistently good, service is friendly, and with a nice atmosphere. Sweet potato fries are wonderful. I've tried various burgers and have enjoyed them all. Great location. Love it!

Great burgers. Huge favorite of some family that lives in Lawrence. I got a bacon burger with cheddar and some sweet potato fries and destroyed every ounce of each. The ambiance of the place is somewhat like a college hangout downstairs, with a great kitchen in the back, and an upstairs dining area that overlooks the bar and front door. Good service, very reasonable price for what you get, I think my burger was around ~$7-8.00 plus fries, but like I said, the burger was great! Next time I'm in Lawrence I will definitely come back to try another burger and fries. Was told the truffle fries are "to die for" so I might have to check em out next time.

Stopped here as my buddies and I were road tripping to Iowa from Texas and this was one of the more memorable places we went to. We shared three different burgers along with two different fries. Kobe burger - Amazing. Everything on this was just perfect. The pickled red onions, the truffle butter, the aioli.... Fire burger - Pretty good. The avocado wasn't quite ripe but was still good. The habenero cactus jelly had a good heat but a little sweet for my liking (duh, it's JELLY). Stomach Warmer - Very good. This was a shredded beef "burger", but I would call it a sandwich. None the less it was super tasty. The beef had a great green chili flavor as well as being moist. The truffle fries and the duck fat fries were both great. Just felt like I had oil seeping out of my pores afterwards, but hey this is a burger joint after all.

My burger was cold in the middle and so was my husband's. Their homemade "pickles" are oily, cut up cucumbers that don't deserve the name of "pickle". My burger named "Fire" wasn't hot in the slightest. Tasted like the peppers had been soaked in water and tomato juice. My soggy hamburger bun also gave me that impression. The poutine was cold at the bottom by the time we got our food and the truffle fries were just okay. I've had way better. The wait to order was long, we had to knock over an old lady and a family of five to get a table, and then we waited for our food...for a really long time. I briefly considered just drinking the sauces they have out, but the sauces were overrated. Don't believe the hype! Eat elsewhere.

Went to the Burger Stand for lunch today with our daughter which was the third or fourth time we've been there. The restaurant is in an old building in downtown Lawrence which was probably built not too long after Quantrill and his raiders burned Lawrence. They have a good concept and offerings but every time we go someone ends up with a barely cooked burger (moo!) which leads me to believe their process is broken. The truffle fries and onion rings are yummy but think fresh cut fries should be on their menu...

I've always been very happy with my burgers here. Cooked how i like it, juicy, messy and the toppings and sides are awesome. Love the truffle fries and all the dipping sauces. I've only tried one non burger item which was the chicken sandwhich (called the barnyard dash) and it was good but I will stick to burgers.

So this place was hella good. And I'm not a huge burger-and-fries type of girl. I mean I like them, but I almost never go out of my way to get a burger and fries. This place may have changed that. So me and mi amigo decided to give the Burger Stand a try after hearing a ton of people saying how amazing it was. It's a lot more expensive than I would usually pay for a burger, but I heard it was worth it. We got there and grabbed the little paper menus waiting for us at the end of a bar, and then spent a little while trying to decide what to get. Thankfully for a girl like me who has troubles deciding, the menu is pretty much limited to beer, burgers, dogs, and fries. But don't let that make you think they have limited options- they seriously have something for everybody there. So, after making sure Andrew was getting something different than I was, we ordered. Me: The Smoke (burger, smoked gouda cheese, applewood bacon, and chipotle ketchup) medium-rare with a side of Truffle fries. Him: The Classic burger with a side of Duck Fat fries Both: a basket of Sweet-Potato fries. I had to. I've heard so many people rave about those things. So we picked a spot, waited for maybe 10 minutes until they called our order, picked it up and brought it to the table. Everything looked really good- it was fresh and hot, and the basket of fries came with four different dipping sauces. And the burgers were BIG. That's always a good sign. I went for the fries first. I tried the Duck Fat. I'd never had them before but I'd heard lots of great things about them. They were... rich. Maybe it's just how duck fat fries always are, but for me the flavor was a little over powering and the fries themselves were greasier than I would have liked. But then I moved on to my Truffle fries. Oh man were they good. Thin, crispy fries that were extremely flavorful. They were sprinkled with what was probably a blend of truffle oil, salt, herbs, and parmesan cheese and were incredibly addictive. And then the sweet potato fries. Ohhhh my goondess. These were a thicker cut (which I loved) and were crispy on the outside but moist on the inside. They had a cinnamony, sugary, salty flavor that was unbeatable. SO GOOD. And then the burger. I took a bite into a perfectly cooked, juicy, burger with the creamy gouda and smoky bacon with that amazing Chipotle ketchup that gave the perfect sweet acidic edge. A-maaaaa-zing. The brioche bun was a lovely touch because the flavor was absorbed in the bread without turning it into a soggy bun incapable of supporting the burger (much appreciated). I ate all of it. Even though it was really big. :) So, basically, this is probably the best burger I've had, and definitely the best sweet potato fries and truffle fries. Definitely planning on coming back to try some of their other options. Great job, Burger Stand.

I loved it at Dempsey's when I was a student and returning after 2 years I love it at its new home. The burgers are good burger stand burgers and all of the fry options are delicious. They also sell real sodas. Probably what would have made the meal over the top (even though it was the dead of winter) would have been a baller chocolate milkshake. For that experience I guess I need to keep going back to Taylor's Refresher.

FYI, in case you're wondering why, as a vegan, I'm even hitting up these burger joints, it's because they represent a common denominator between my sugar-free, gluten-free, legume-free dad, and my vegan brother and I. Figured I might as well review them, right? So, the Dad was attracted to this place because they offer burger salads, which he loves. Us vegans did pretty well, too - the "vegetarian" section of the menu is populated by four yummy options, all of which can be altered to vegan EXCEPT (alas!) the buns contain egg. So, Abe got the Succotash Burger as a burger, anyway, because as we all know, sometimes you have to lower your standards in order to eat out. It was delicious! I tried a bite, too. Let me quote the current menu: "Succotash: Navy, Lima, and Kidney bean patty with grilled corn and sun-dried tomato mustard. $6.95." They add $2.50 to make any patty a salad; there's some other price manipulation to remove the bun but serve on just a small bed of lettuce (rather than a large, fancy salad); I can't remember quite what. Anyway, prices are reasonable. I had the Romesco, without the egg-y bun, on a bed of lettuce, and I was really impressed. Vegetables and, indeed, beds of lettuce tend to represent a totally neglected category at many American-y food venues - it's like this nasty afterthought, where you're not even expected to want to eat the soggy olive drab mess. Not so at the Casbah! My bed of lettuce was crispy and bright green and delicious, and my green beans were fresh, barely blistered in a skillet with a touch of oil, just the way I like them. The roasted red pepper sauce was fantastic! - and believe you me, I won't return to a place with shitty condiments. Condiments are what makes the world go 'round, don't you know. The lentil patty itself was divine. As was my Fat Tire beer. So, I was happy. Serving-size-wise, I could have had a bit more - my fault for not going with the burger salad option. Also, of course, the addition of buns would have made it perfect, but the egg thing. There are six different fries options, and I loved their spin on the Smoked Tofu Fries! MMMMM! Get them, you won't regret. I was shoving them in my mouth like no tomorrow! Ambiance-wise, it's my kind of place but maybe not everyone's - the Casbah is basically a long, shoebox-shaped bar, and so you go up to the bar to order your food, and then choose one of the booths along the opposite side of the bar to sit, unless you sit at the bar. The back of the place splits into a bi-level arrangement with tables and chairs. As a long-time resident of Flagstaff, AZ, I'm quite accustomed to having my fun in shabby places that look like ass, so I felt right at home. I would not dress up for this place, needless to say. But the food was really excellent. The selection? Not too great, especially considering the egg-y buns, but still reasonable. The beer selection is gratifying. Over all, if I found myself in Lawrence, KS again, I would hit up Local Burger in preference to this place, but I'm really glad other businesses are considering us vegans. Kudos for that, and offering some original, tasty, memorable selections. One thumb up, one thumb texting.

I so rarely give a 1 star review but these duck fat fries absolutely deserve it. They are literally the most disgusting fries I have ever eaten. Greasy but not crisp on the outside, dry as cardboard on the inside. A complete waste of duck fat and a waste of my $6. I came home and binged on refreshing fruits and veggies to cleanse my palate of that nasty flavor. What an embarrassment Casbah, as I hear your burgers are actually decent...

This is one restaurant that never disappoints! If you are craving a hamburger, this one is the best in the business. The Smoke or Kobe burger are my personal favorites. If you like sweet potato fries, then you came to the right place. They have multiple choices of dipping sauces that are all delicious.

Few times does Yelp's "Meh. I've experienced better." apply so well. It's been over a year since I visited, and reviewed, the Burger Stand. At that time they were in their former location at Dempsey's Pub. I had hoped that time, and possibly the new location, would improve the two star experience of eating at the Burger Stand. It did not. Re-reading that review today two things are clear (1) the burgers are still two stars (at best) and (2) the real standout of this burger joint is the fries. Perhaps if I lived in Lawrence and The Burger Stand was more convenient I'd give it enough chances to experience the burger worthy of four (or even three) stars that I seemed to have missed on both of my visits. But I don't, and it's not, so you can count me as one less person you'll find standing in line

Disappointingly average. My wife and I visited on May 27, about 12:30, ordered two 'Classic Burgers', side of regular fries, side of onion rings. 25 minutes later still waiting for our food ! It was our first visit, so wanted to just get a 'baseline' view of what the restaurant could do. I understand that lunchtime can be busy, but that seems like an unreasonably long time for such simple food ? We asked our server, Havana, for an update, and she (by checking her computer screen) told us that delivery in the restaurant had been running about 30-35 minutes. About five minutes later, our food arrived. My burger was 'medium', as ordered. My wife's was 'well', grey all the way through. At that stage, we were NOT sending it back. Nothing exceptional about either burger, my wife pointed out that they were NOT hand made but uniformly pressed, nice and round and about 1/2 inch thick. I would compare them to something like a Winstead's or Ott's mini-burger. Nothing wrong with those but NOT 'best hamburgers in the country'. Same for the fries and onion rings, completely undistinguished. We get to Lawrence 3-4 times a year for lunch and shopping. We usually go to Free State Brewery (fine food there) or the Bird Dog Bar at the Oread Hotel (also good food). So that's my basis for comparison and the Burger Stand would be in third place. We are not likely to return.

This place is awesome. They have plenty of different choices on their menu, and there are some choices for vegetarians, too. Kids menus, too! I've had the black bean and the Garbo burgers--both are super yummy. Their fries are the stars of the show. They're always piping hot and fresh. I don't think I've come across a floppy French fry-- they're perfectly seasoned and their texture is just as awesome. Their tater tots are amazing, too. They're Tetris-shaped!! The sauces they have available are great. You really should to try all of them, but the garlic aioli is magical. Staff is friendly. It's fun to hear all the different names the kitchen calls out! It might be a little too dark inside for some, but it's also a bar. Definitely a fun Lawrence experience.

I had lunch here with 4 friends - it was the first time for all of us. It is a little confusing when you first walk in on the ordering procedure but a quick read of the signs and you are good to go! We ordered burgers and a variety of the fries to share. We really wanted an alcoholic milkshake but we were on work hours so decided we would come back on a weekend! You have to listen for your name and go pick up your order from a window - all of the orders came out pretty quickly. There are a variety of dipping sauces for the fries and we all had our favorites - I was partial to the avocado ranch and aioli. When ordering I was asked if I wanted my burger medium - how they are typically cooked - I said well done. Only a couple of us were asked and those who weren't were surprised and disappointed to have red burgers. I love medium rare steaks but everyone I know likes hamburger with no pink so I am surprised anyone would think this is the norm. The girl at the register seemed new so I am thinking most people are asked:) I had the fire burger - avocado with a sweet/spicy/smoky jelly (think hot pepper jelly) - it was very good! I tried the sweet potato fries - good, had a hint of cinnamon, bourbon bacon cheese - cheese was too velveeta for me, truffle fries & Cajun fries - those 2 are where it's at! We all ordered the side size or fries and had a few of each other's - still had lots left over! A pesky fly buzzed our table the entire time:( Very nice staff and would definitely go back!

This is an absolutely delicious burger joint, nationally regarded, and deservedly so. On the off chance that a Burger Stand related person reads this, please send in a powerwasher crew on a day that you are closed, as the grease that permeates the back of the restaurant has become ubiquitous and now suppresses the appetite of customers who enter through the back door. Otherwise, bravo. Love this place.

I had the classic burger, have to admit it was very juicy and had a great taste. Only problem was it was quite pricey, $8.49 just for the burger and then you had to buy everything else. My total bill for 2 hamburgers and fries withdrink was over $34.00! Good food but not what you had to pay.

I used to visit the Burger Stand once a month while in undergrad. During graduation weekend, I went on Saturday for lunch. Burger Stand is the best burger in Lawrence, is affordable, and mirrors the hip but unassuming vibe that Lawrence strives for. Burger Stand actually offers four solid veggie burger options. I have to say, I felt sick on three separate occasions after eating Burger Stand in the last year. I couldn't figure out if it was something on their end (Burger Stand can feel a bit grimy after you've waited for counter service for a while and had a chance to look around at the cleanliness). But I actually think it's the shitaake mushroom burger that gets me: whatever's in that spicy sauce. Or it's one of the fry sauces. Anyway, I'm not sure, but it caused me to take a very long hiatus from Burger Stand. This time around, I got a Garbo veggie burger with truffle fries while catching up with an old friend who was graduating. The patties here are excellent: They don't give you burger envy. In fact, you might find others staring at your burger in deep, sinful jealousy. The truffle fries here are great too. I'd say they're worth the upgrade over the regular fries at the side-order level, but not the basket-order level. My favorite fry sauces are definitely avocado ranch and the mustard. Yes, mixed together, because some people just want to see the world burn. This is the kind of place I'll always come back to as long as it doesn't make me sick. It's core to Lawrence, and the long lines prove it.

Burgers and brews five star. We sat on the patio and had some great alley entertainment. For food, we tried every french fry... All delicious. The duck fat were my favorite. Tried the smoke burger, but would venture to guess that they are all equally great. Great variety of flavor and ingredients, has to be great.

Sunday breakfast is the best in town for its biscuits and gravy. Their French Toast casserole looks delicious but I've never tried it. The hashbrowns are perfectly fried golden little shavings of potato. They only serve breakfast on Sundays from 10 to 2. They aren't too busy and full yet like most breakfast places in town so you can sit immediately. I have tried biscuits and gravy everywhere I have breakfast and these are the best. They have spice and are flavorful. They are always served hot and have pieces of beef, pork and fried chicken. You will find us here every other Sunday followed by bowling, it has become tradition. Their regular food is also excellent.

Excellent place to come and done! The bartender Micky was just great and enjoyable to talk with. We happened to come by on a Tuesday when they have $5 chicken sandwiches! They were delicious and even had bacon, avocado, and more! What a great deal! In addition we tried the truffle fries which are great on their own and a basket is more than enough for two people! There are also so many different sauces to try my favorites were the avocado ranch and Parmesan. Overall great place and one of my favorites that I have tried while in Lawrence.

I can't say enough about the duck fries....yummy! They are soooo flavorful. We also ordered the truffle fries, which were almost equally as good and the Cajun fries. We had the Kobe and Smoke burgers. The buns were soft and the burgers were restaurant quality. The sauces were amazing. I don't remember all of them, but I really liked the parmesan garlic, horseradish, and the toasted marshmallow(a group favorite). I was stoked about the $12 pitcher of free state ale!!! The upstairs loft overlooking the restaraunt is a nice touch, the staff were very friendly, and the place was clean. The only disappointment was that I noticed the adult milkshakes on the way out the door... I'll have to sample those the next time!

I loved everything about this place. From the $3 mystery beer special on a recent Friday night to the amazing Fire burger to the numerous homemade condiment options to The Goonies being on TV in the background, it was all wonderful. My family is coming to town in a few weeks and I can't wait to bring them (and return myself).

I had the Smoke Burger with Duck Fat Fries. Mondays are $2 pints of Free State beer. The restaurant is a little crazy with several levels and counter service. It has a lot of character in a college town. The Smoke Burger was better than average with crispy bacon and a lot of juice. The patty is local beef topped with smoked Gouda and smoked bacon. The Duck Fat Fries were excellent - crisp with the duck fat taste. I sampled the Garlic Parmesan Aioli and Chipotle Cocoa Ketchup. The aioli was a perfect match, but the ketchup did not taste that special. Eat the fries fast as the fat congeals at the bottom and makes a mess.

It's ok, the truffle fries are very good. I have been here several times. The burgers are big but 90% of the time undercooked. The bathrooms are dirty .

This place. There is not another place in LFK that that holds a place in my heart quite like The Burger Stand. I've probably been here once a week or so the whole time I've been in Lawrence and it's the first place I'll bring anyone who comes to visit from out of town. It's a great place to grab a beer, have dinner, or a post-dinner alcoholic shake for dessert. The food is EXCELLENT. There are several burgers to choose from with a wide variety of vegetarian (and a few vegan) options as well. The fry selection is also impressive with choices like truffle fries, sweet potato fries, duck fat fries, and bacon cheddar cheese fries. They're all great, but the truffle fries covered in parmesan cheese is the winner for me. The sauce selection is great too. There's a sauce station with 8 or so sauces for the burgers and fries including avocado ranch, bbq sauce, chipotle cocoa ketchup, and marshmallow dip for the sweet potato fries. The staff is great and helpful and although it's not a full service restaurant, you'll frequently have employees coming to your table to refill water or grab you a drink from the bar. Check it out if you're in town...you won't regret it!

Stopped into The Casbah just to try a burger from The Burger Stand and my husband and I were more than impressed. Not only was the Kobe burger with American Kobe beef, pickled red onions, truffle butter, tomato-aioli sauce & local greens delicious, The Casbah also had a great line-up of beers to complement the burger. The Duck Fat fries were also a standout, love the addition of orange zest and herbs to add a bright kick. The Burger Stand has definitely been added to our must-visits while in Lawrence.

You have to eat here. I do not have the words to express how happy this place makes me. All of the burgers are awesome, the truffle fries are a must try, and the sauces are all homemade. There are also a lot of rotating beers on tap.

This place was great! I came here with two friends on a Saturday night. It was a little busy but still some tables available. This place had that bar feel to it but that was just me. There were menus on the counter and also there was a chalkboard version of the menu. The line to order was not long but it did take a few minutes for it to start moving. I ordered the Smoke Burger ($8.99) and a side of regular fries ($1.50). I felt that the price of the burger was pretty low which was just right for me. When your food was ready, they announced it for you to pick up. The condiments were all interesting and I can't remember the names to all of them. The only one that stood out to me was the marshmallow one which was good but could be a little sweet to some people. The Smoke Burger was delicious and I finished that burger so quick that I was a little disappointed I didn't eat slower. lol Everything in the burger tasted good and definitely would recommend it. The fries were good too. I tried some of my friend's Cajun fries and those were legit. If I could reorder, I would definitely go with the Cajun fries. The Poutine fries were interesting and were not bad in my opinion. You might want to only order a side of those instead of a basket but that's what I thought. Overall, great place for burgers and would definitely come back if I was in the area.

During a visit to Lawrence and a long hot day of shopping on Massachusetts street we stopped in to The Burger Stand to grab a pint and a bite. Don't let the name fool you, they have taken the lowly burger and have elevated it to culinary heights. And the Duck Fat fries, how had we lived as long as we have and traveled the many miles across this great land and not had Duck Fat fries? A delicacy beyond the norm yet just what you would expect to be married with burgers that belong in the journals of a food network. Go, trek to Lawrence and indulge in The Burger Stand. You'll thank us later!

I have eaten at the Burger Stand a couple times now and both times I was impressed. The bar is a great venue...just what every town needs. Great atmosphere and very good burgers/fries. I found out about The Burger Stand because I asked people familiar with Lawrence about the best burgers in Lawrence. Every person put Dempsey's and The Burger Stand on their list. I even got some of the divergent history between the two joints. Could be true, could be lore...so in this review I am going to compare the two after writing about my experience at the Burger Stand. When you walk in for the first time its clear you have never been here before. There is a process that all experienced Burger Standers know and follow. I figured it out and then proceeded. It makes sense when you know it. I ordered a burger and two baskets of fries - truffle and poutine. I could not choose between the two. Then walked downstairs to get a drink. I was AMAZED at all the self service sauces they had. Wow...the sauces for the burgers and fries are awesome. I get my burger and my fries and my drink and start trying. I am only impressed and then more impressed with each bite. The amount of food I got was enormous. NEVER order two baskets of fries. Maybe two sides but the amount of fries I got was silly huge. That is not a complaint. Just a warning. The poutine was the best poutine south of the border (the Canadian border). I was not fully impressed with the atmosphere at the Burger Stand. It was good but not one that allowed for awesome game watching or moving between groups of people easily. I will write a separate review on Dempsey's on their page but here is my comparison between the two... Atmosphere: D: 90, BS 75 Burgers: D:90, BS 95 Fries: D:85, BS 95 If you are a burger aficionado, you NEED to eat here. Same thing if you are a lover of French Fries. The famous and trendy burger places in KC (Blanc & Bottle, BRGR, etc) want and aspire to have the food that The Burger Stand has.

What a great college town bar/pub atmosphere! The unique burgers were completely wonderful! Dressed beautifully and cut to perfection, the burgers are outstanding. Love the variety of sauces, and you can't go wrong with hundreds of beer choices, if you are a beer drinker. Nice clean restrooms as well.

Burgers and fries are always great here. They have a great selection of beers and boozy milkshakes as well. Beware, the burgers are very large so you might want to split the fries with someone. Their condiment and fry sauce station is a really great addition to an already delicious spot. If you're trying to go on a weekend or evening be prepared to wait in line, but it's totally worth it.

Originally from California and was referred to this place by a friend of a friend. And they DID NOT disappoint! To make things more impressive, we had a group of 21 people and everyone was served within 10 minutes. Now that's service! I got the SMOKE BURGER (no cheese) with a side of DUCK FAT FRIES. I loved that they gave a plethora of bacon, because most places are just so conservative. And the chipotle-coco ketchup was a combination that worked together perfectly. I was also able to try the sweet potato fries. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the cinnamon rub on them but it grew on me. I'm glad that I got to try the different flavors because let's be real, you can never try too many fries. I don't know the next time I'll be in Lawrence, but when I am, I'll for sure be back!

This place is pretty good. Even the cat fish sandwich is good. AND OHMG THE FRENCH FRIES WITH ALL THE SAUCES AND DUCK FAT FRIES AND OHMG I'M SALIVATING. Seriously, the fries are so good, there are a few kinds to choose from, I really like the duck fat fries with the chipotle ketchup sauce. Ohmg, so f*cking good. I just don't like having to go get my food (probably an American first world problem). If you sit at the bar, though, you don't have to wait in line to order and the bartender gets food and drinks right to you. You don't have to keep getting back in line. So, my fat ass always bellies up to the bar. Also, there's a small upstairs with pool, which, I'm always looking for a place with games! They also have some homemade coleslaw that goes on the catfish burger and it's damn good. I really enjoy this place. Now only if my ex would stop going, so I could drop in.....

This place has it "going on." Love the burgers. Very innovative menu and new creations regularly. Vegetarians, don't be afraid! There's plenty for you here too. Love the huge draught beer selection (sorry, no Budweiser at this place). Atmosphere is great and prices are well below local competitors. We routinely drive 40 miles to eat here and love it.

My experiences here have been mixed. My burger is always good, but the cooking varies greatly. I always ask for medium. I've had anything ranging from rare to well-done. At times, the greasiness of the fries can be overwhelming. But I continue to come back because even though it's not always perfect, it is always delicious.

So yummy! We took my mother in law there when she visited us from Arizona and she loved it! Love all the dips one gets to choose from. My favorite is the avocado ranch dip. Yummy hamburgers and plenty of different toppings with lots of sides to choose from. Wonderful service every time and even got the pleasure of listening to the cooks cheerily sing as we ate one day. I didn't give them 5 stars because there is always a line to order. They only have one register. We waited over 30 minutes one afternoon! Worth the wait though if you're prepared.

Such a cool place. Not only are the burgers amazing (I got the original w/ sweet potato fries) but the atmosphere is so delightfully college--kind of grunge, lots of TVs and barstools. I went at 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon and it was packed, so I'm sure it's even more so at night. Still, they have an amazing selection of food and sauces (marshmallow dipping sauce FTW) that the wait might be worth it. I didn't have any beer, but they have a HUGE variety! Burgers were made to be enjoyed with beer, and you can definitely do that here (unintentional rhyme). I hope someday to work my way through their menu--it all looks amazing (duck fat fries???).

I have not eaten any of the sandwiches here. I have not eaten the truffle fries. I have not eaten the smoked tofu because they were out of them the times I've been there, 3 times now. I have eaten the sweet potato fries and they're pretty gross. Completely coated in cinnamon to the point of being inedible. Ever had sweet potato fries without anything on them? THEY'RE GREAT! There's a marshmallow "sauce" for dipping them in. Why? Sweet potato fries don't need a single thing added to them, let alone more sweetness. Unless you're a child I suppose? I have eaten the cheese fries without the bacon, but I'm not sure why I bothered asking for no bacon because they put bacon grease in the cheese sauce. Why? Because this is America damnit, where lazy chefs add bacon to everything and the people love it! I could barely eat many of them, overwhelmed with the over-salty gross bacon grease aftertaste. I have eaten the poutine fries several times. They're not too shabby for midwest poutine, except for the last time I got them. Apparently they ran out of the regular curds and decided to just add some swiss cheese to the diminished curds and nobody would notice? It definitely wasn't there the first couple times I've eaten the poutine. They could have at least tried to cover with a cheese that tastes kinda close to the normal curds, provolone or mozzarella? It didn't go well, not good. If this is a new thing they're doing, that sucks. I have not tried many of their sauces because they're all spicy, except for the super sweet marshmallow sauce. Even the avocado ranch, a sauce which should be a "cooling" sauce, is also spicy. Two ingredients that most people add to counter spiciness, avocado, and ranch, and they decided it needed to be spicy. Why? Because that's what boring and lazy chefs do to make their boring food more interesting. And boring people just eat it up because boring people love spicy food as a lame way to feel exciting. I'm not sure why everyone keeps going on about the "hipster" service and customers. All I ever see here are college kids, frat boys, and jocks, but who really cares anyway. The service has been consistent, no complaints.

Loved the fire burger. I like the contrast of hot and sweet. The avocados compliment the burger also. The burger was super juicy and not dry. I would definitely come here.

Okay... it was a little bit of redemption for this place today. I have been involved in a discussion thread on Yelp about the Quebecois dish called Poutine. They have it here. I was in Lawrence. BANG! Time to eat!! The fries were crispy this time around. Thank God. They beef/veal gravy was smooth and excellent. And they included cheese bits. Not sure what kind of cheese. Does it matter if it's good? : ) See pic. My black bean burger was good... could have been a little hotter in terms of temperature. The Arugula and salsa on top were delicious and the bun was perfect. $1.50 Hamms beer and great service rounded out an excellent visit.

Loud, dark, but often tasty, The Burger Stand is a place I return to on occasion to give it another shot. I have mixed feelings about this place. The atmosphere would be really nice if it weren't so packed all the time, but when a lot of people pack in, it gets very noisy. There's not much sound proofing/dispersion, so it doesn't take much to get a dull roar going, and the music is played a little louder than necessary. However, TBS has great decor, so it's got that going for it, which is nice. They also boast the largest craft beer selection in Lawrence. As for the food: for the most part, TBS has some tasty offerings. The fries are decent, the sweet potato fries are great, and they have a nice collection of sauces to dip them in, including things like cocoa chipotle ketchup and Parmesan garlic aioli. I will caution you against the smoked tofu: it's probably their worst side item (this coming from a tofu lover). Their burgers are mostly good. The buns are to die for and their flavor combinations are brilliant. My biggest problem with TBS is that the burgers I've had were all very dry. If you like to go light on sauce, it's fine, but I usually think they need extra condiments. The avocado ranch is a particularly good addition to these burgers. Overall, I would recommend it about half of the time. Definitely give it a try; it's a great burger joint and a must-see restaurant for a Lawrencian.

Love the variety and ever changing specials menu. Burgers and dogs are great and the brunch on Sunday's was amazing too. Try the great variety of dipping sauces with an order of fries. And don't forget the hot pickle. Definitely go if you are in town

Okay, I already need to go reorder and get some sweet potato fries so I can get some of that marshmallow sauce! Anyways, I got some duck fat fries....mmmmm tasty! I got the farmhouse or something....the chicken sandwich it wasn't great. the Chicken was good the flavors I didn't love, my husband got the smoked burger.....YUM! I am getting that next time. I also got the garlic tofu, it was good! and my kid got a corn dog, that looked good too!

Favorite restaurant and place to get a burger in Lawrence. The Classic burger is always a good choice or the Garbo or the Romesco for vegetarians. I'm not a vegan but they say they can make the vegetarian sandwiches vegan. Recommend the sweet potato fries, duck fat fries or regular fries and they have a multitude of different sauces/ranches/ketchups for dipping . Don't be discouraged by the long line, service is fast. There's a separate bar area downstairs which they open on busy nights/game nights. Always have different burger, salad, corn dog specials. I never get bored of their offerings. Large selection of draft and bottled beers.

Very fun place and chill. Running joke here is the creative names on your order when they call to let you know your food is read ie Santa Claus, Obama... BURGERS are amazing and the special sauces are definitely worth going.

Burger Stand, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways: - I love you for your burgers, prepared a perfect medium. Your selection of toppings is inspired without trying too hard to be some sort of fusion monstrosity. My black and blue burger with apple chutney and blue cheese was to die for. - I love you for your sides, especially your duck fat fries. I love your truffle oil, your sweet potato fries and your willingness to combine all these things if so our heart desires. The smorgasbord of dipping sauces is a sight of beauty, and I couldn't possible pick my favorite in which to dip my fries. - I love you for your beer selection, because c'mon.... it's beer! - I love you for your aesthetic, lots of dark woods and perfect lighting. Tables of all sizes means this place is good for most any group. The ordering at the counter really helps to expedite the process, and even if you're full, somebody will be getting up soon. It just works. - I love you for your promotions. Seriously, I can go into your basement on Tuesdays and play old school video games for free? Why didn't you exist when I lived in Lawrence? My grades would have suffered, but my Tuesdays would have been so much better. I am going to have to make the trek back to The Burger Stand again ASAP to try and take advantage of this opportunity. Burger Stand, I think you're awesome and even though you are far from my home, I want to be best friends. I'll never do you wrong, and I suspect you could say the same.

The best burgers in Lawrence. I always get a vegetarian option, my husband gets meat burgers and we've never been disappointed. We can't get enough of the truffle fries. They have tons of dipping sauces in the back, one of the best being an avocado ranch. The marshmallow dipping sauce with their sweet potato fries is a favorite of our kids. It's a busy and popular place. The line and wait for food can get really long so we usually end up calling in our order. But there's a good beer selection or even alcoholic milkshakes, if you don't mind waiting.

We were excited to try out the Burger Stand. We went with hubby's parents; not a great idea since she hates hamburger and he gets cranky in loud settings. The burgers were ok. Not spectacular but good. To their credit, it was a perfect medium. Not overcooked. The fries were great. Dipping sauces were great. My issue is seating. It's crowded. You know that going in. But people were saving seats. One member of the party would get in line while another sat for 15-20 minutes holding their table. It takes up unused space unnecessarily. Made finding a table hard.

Come for the truffle fries, stay for the funny names being read over the speaker. But seriously, in a town where I've been underwhelmed by a lot of the food, this place makes the best burgers in town. It's not fancy, at all. It's loud, but the people working there are nice. It's clean and quick. It even has a few healthy options (that are delicious) on the menu. My veg friends love the tofu fries (I can't eat tofu, so that's admittedly hearsay). My personal favorte (by a hair) is the Barnyard Bash. But there's nothing on the menu I haven't like. Try to limit yourself to this place to once or twice a month; I cut down to this rate and lost 5 pounds (no joke). Oh, in the summer, try the alcoholic milkshakes.

We Love The Burger Stand! Just wish there were more salad options so I can justify eating a burgers more often. BTW, it's not a hipster place. Hipsters are typically outwardly self righteous. These guys are nerds/geeks. Pretty humble if you ask a girl from CO.

Come with me to the Casbah, we'll make beautiful music together! The Burger Stand at The Casbah 803 Massachusetts Street Lawrence, Kansas 66044 Phone: (785) 856-0543 Web: thecasbahburgerstand.com… Hours: Mon-Sat 11AM to 10PM; Sun 11AM to 9PM We walked into the Casbah during FINAL FRIDAYS in October because I had heard good things about their food, but there was a line a mile long and a strange smell in the air, not food-borne and not in a good way. We were again in the area the other night, a Thursday, and decided to drop-in and give them a smell and a try. The aroma this time was more conducive to our appetite, so we continued in to place our order. Orders are taken at the end of the bar furthest from the door, a location backed by a large chalkboard with menu items packed in so tightly it is a bit difficult to read. The bar is a bit of a dive, but that is a good thing because I am NOT a metro-sexual, feeling homey and full of locals with long hair, jeans, and t-shirts. The decor is eclectic to say the least, a smattering of nondescript accouterments, booths, tables, and bar stools in a semi-dark room. Being our first visit I decided to go with the CLASSIC BURGER ($7.50), a 1/2 pound of beef on a brioche bun with Vermont white cheddar cheese and assorted locally grown greens. Thinking it strange that a so-called "classic" burger did not come with tomato, onion, or pickle, I chose to add bacon ($1.50 extra) and tomato (no charge). Ordered medium-well, when I picked-up our order at the kitchen window in the rear of the building (not an intuitive location, it took me a few seconds to figure out where to go), my burger was almost perfectly cooked. For a 1/2 pound ground beef patty, it seemed small to me (more like 1/3 of a pound) and the cheese appeared almost non-existent. The "greens" consisted of 7-8 small pieces of arugula, not nearly enough, and the tomato, although fresh and tasty, was cut too small and was difficult to keep from falling out and onto my plate. Even still, the burger was very tasty! Offering a variety of "fries", you have a choice of "regular" (side - $1.50/basket - $4), fried in "duck fat" ($2.50/$6), "truffle" ($3/$7), "sweet potato" ($3/$6), "Cajun" ($3/$5), and "bourbon-bacon cheddar" ($4/$8). Again, being my first visit I wanted to keep things as simple and traditional as possible to see if they get the basics right, so we ordered a basket of regular fries. They came out of the kitchen piping-hot, crispy, not burnt, and salted to perfection. I have heard good things about the truffle and duck fat fries, so I will give them a try on future visits ... and there will be future visits! My wife, who prefers vegetarian options when available, went with the "Romesco", a lentil patty with feta cheese, toasted almonds, green beans, and roasted red pepper sauce on a brioche bun (made in-house I believe). The lentil burger was delicious and flavorful, but a bit too dry and falling apart as teeth were sunk. Green beans on a burger you ask? I asked myself the same thing and thought it a bit strange with little value added from my standpoint. I like feta, but such a dry cheese on such a dry burger probably is not the best combination and the burger could have been enhanced by a softer, more flavorful variety, gouda perhaps. The Burger Stand at The Casbah was an enjoyable experience and a reasonable value, coming in at a bit over $25 for two of us, including two draft beers ($3 each on special). The menu could have a few more options with only 6 burger options along with a Catfish Po Boy and 4 vegetarian options. They also offer onion rings ($4/$7), root beer floats ($4), malts ($5), and shakes ($5). Not a daily staple, a good burger and fries are always a welcome combination and The Burger Stand does an excellent job on both! CombatCritic Gives The Burger Stand at The Casbah 7 Out of 10 Bombs ... BOMBS ARE GOOD! Worst place in town. I've gotten sick from late night burgers on two occassions. There are hundredes of fan boys and girls that will tell you it's the best in town. Well we've got two new burger places downtown in the past couple months. If that tells you anything. Everything is really expensive. The food is not bad.. .don't get me wrong. There are just better burgers around that cost less and so just don't go here. The karaoke on Wednesday nights is cool and sometimes they have video game things in the basement. Bar is pretty well stocked. Just don't buy a burger. If you are vegitarian you can get a black bean burger that's pretty good.

Folks in Topeka seem to be blown away with this place. I wasn't. I was left wondering if I was missing something? The food was good, but not great. Proving once again that talk can only get folks so far. The "talk" was how unbelievably good the Burger Stand was. I was built up so much that I could only be let down- and that's exactly what happened. Again, good, not great- I'm looking for great. Especially when one factors in the notion that I spent approximately $50 on food for three. I'll head back and order something else. Thus, an update to this review may be in order. Fingers crossed.

Always a solid choice in Lawrence. The best burgers around with interesting collaboration of toppings. They have great fries and all sorts of yummy dipping sauces. In the winter, they have chili that is not to be missed!!! Plus, they have a stellar friendly staff. You have to go and check this place out for yourself!

I've been here more than a handful of times and order the classic or smoke burger, duck fat fries, and a brown ale or stout. My burger is actually cooked to medium, service has always been polite, and it's a good place to come alone or with others. Also, they offer outside seating and are open late at night. Coming from a city where restaurants and bodegas being open 24 hours is the norm, this is something I really appreciate.

Just had their Chicago Style hot dog and it contained all the right delicious ingredients except for one glaring error: they use whimpy skinless wieners instead of the real thing-natural casing. Nathan's, their brand of dog make a great natural casing dog, so why the discrimination? Natural casing seals in the juices, doesn't sweat them out and the snap you get with each bite is an important part of the hot dog textural experience.

I love the feel of this place. I love the decor. The service was usually pretty good except for one slight detail: they never got my order right. I don't like any pink in my burger but every time it came out practically mooing. I tried it several times, but eventually gave up. Even if I ordered my burger well done, it came out pink. Personally, I liked it better when it was at it's former location. I now go there if I want a great burger (Dempsey's, if you most know). Sorry, Burger Stand, you just don't do it for me.

The BS used to be a lot better. As of lately it seems like the quality of the food has really gone done hill. Just recently I ordered food to go and they forgot to give me part of my order. In addition, by the time I got home (not a far distance away) my food was cold and appeared sloppily assembled. With that being said, the staff were apologetic about forgetting my food, and offered to comp my fries & burger. For the time being, I think I'll hold off on returning to the BS and take my business some place else.

Burgers are amazing I've gotten a couple different burgers here and they are always amazing. They are cooked perfectly every time. The fries are great. Both the regular and Cajun are great. I'll admit that the truffle fries were a bit too much for me. Happy at 10 fries, miserable at 30, but nice and crispy none the less. One of the best and unique things about the Burger Stand are all their different dipping sauces. My favorites are the coco ketchup and avocado ranch.

Stopped in here late night waiting for a cab for a burger and it was well worth it. The have a great beer list, and the burger was great. The had a variety to chose from, and the duck-fat fries were incredible. Go here anytime you want a beer, a snack, or a meal!

Omg. So good. Just get the regular burger. I know kobe sounds good but trust me. The duck fat fries were amazing. I hear the marshmallow sauce is for dipping the sweet potato fries. Anyway all their sauces are good!

Their truffle fries are AMAZING. Even though their hygiene is questionable at best, I love this place. Definitely the only place to go for burgers in lawrence. And if your not a big burger fan, the barnyard bash is the best chicken sandwich I've ever had!

I have to write this review because I've just been to the Burger Stand in Topeka and have a great basis for comparison. The Burger Stand franchise is fantastic. Recipes are delicious and innovative. The problem though, is in the execution. And this is where the hipster element pollutes the experience for anyone who decides to eat at the Lawrence location. Service: Hipster hospitality is notorious. The people working bar will have their friends stake out spots at the bar right in front of the 70 inch TV that ironically (I know, right?) enough is always tuned to ESPN. Yet they post up there so they can talk to their friends all night (because apparently all of them bartend at bars their friends all go to) and play on their iPhones. What happened to conspicious non-consumption of mass consumer goods? Food: I asked for a burger salad in the Topeka location and got a full bed of mixed greens in one of the big boxes. I order the same thing in Lawrence and get little chopped pieces of romaine, mostly ribs. The sauces are never chilled fully in Lawrence and they come out of the pump really soupy. Good call on the "ATTENTION: THIS CONTAINS RAW EGGS!" You've somewhat covered your asses if someone wants to sue you. But if they see your negligent hipster employees not ever refreshing the ice, it's gonna be a tough call... Bottom line, Burger Stand is an exceptional brand but the drag hipsterness puts on it is just glaring when you compare Lawrence and Topeka.

I thought Mickey Mouse was invented in Kansas City. That's why I was so surprised to see him in Lawrence! Seriously though, my friend and I wandered in here for lunch. I had read good reviews and we came here for some fine burgers while wandering around Lawrence. She ordered the kobe and I ordered the black and blue with duck fries. It was all very good, that is until we reached the end of the meal. We were sitting in a booth by the stone wall. I saw something move, at almost table level on my friend's side. I sat and stared for a few seconds and then saw a little tail. A few seconds later, the whole thing popped out and it was a cute baby mouse. Ok, it would have been cute if it was someone's pet but not so cute in a place where they serve food. I pointed at it and my friend hopped out faster than lightening. I got out of the booth as well and hollered over to the guy that may have been the manager and shouted, "Hey, I just saw a mouse pop out of the wall." Before we could say or do anything else, he rushed to refund us. He was pretty proactive about it. Maybe because I was a little loud? After we got our money back, I said, "You guys should probably hire an exterminator." He said, "Yeah, we've had someone here and keep having problems because it's an old building." So I know someplace I'm not going for burgers next time I'm in Lawrence.

My roommate and I came in from Kansas City for the evening to see a lecture at KU and she said we had to go to Casbah, for the marshmallow sauce at the very least. The selections were all very enticing - various burger toppings, sweet potato fries, truffle fries and duck fries! I went with the fire burger - avocado and habanero jam with sweet potato fries and then got plenty of dipping sauces to go along. The whole grain mustard sauce is delicious and I put this on my burger. The sweet potato fries were great too, definitely go for the marshmallow sauce. The disappointment lies in the actual burger. It was dry, over-cooked and the only real flavor was the habanero jam on top. Meh. Maybe I should have gone for the kobe. However, the Casbah is a fun atmosphere, cute college town area and a fun place to start out the night. I'd go back for the fries!

I have no idea why this place is popular. Maybe it's because Lawrence truly lacks a decent burger joint? The burgers are overpriced and not that great. Honestly, you'd be better off driving to Topeka or KC to dine in a dive that has cheaper and better burgers. However, I think much of this place's charm is that it caters to a younger crowd who wants to overpay for mediocre food because it's the hip place to go in town.

We sat close to the kitchen where you pick up your food and all we heard were the kitchen staff complaining about everything. I don't think that they understand people can actually hear what they're saying.

As someone who grew up in Lawrence and knew the Casbah in its original form, it's a bit strange to see its transformation into a burger restaurant, but it suits the old building well. I think we sat at the booth where Elaine D. saw a mouse pop in during her meal, because we noted conspicuous foam insulation sprayed between the limestone rocks that make up the wall of the old building. That's one of the things about old buildings...they're never immune to the occasional mouse because there are just so many ways for them to get in. I can honestly say that the place did look very clean and staff were quick to clear tables. There's no table service here, but I think there easily could be and this would be a major upgrade for this restaurant. Ordering is pretty straightforward: You place your order at the register by the bar and pick your food up down the stairs near the bar. The noise pollution caused by people's orders being called out was a little overwhelming and interrupted the flow of our conversation. I ordered a Butterfinger shake which was served up very quickly and was terribly sinful. I really shouldn't have and I shouldn't ever again, but I'm sure I will because it was SO good. The hubby and I shared an order of the duck fat fries which were really flavorful and crispy, but a bit too fatty. I had a black and blue burger (bleu cheese and apple chutney) which was served up on a hearty bun that held up to the heft of the burger. The burger was cooked just right and was flavorful but just a bit on the dry side. My hubby had the Kobe and it was juicy and oh-so-delish. There's a full bar here with cheap beer options if you're so inclined. My hubby was excited because they actually had more than one option for hard cider. One thing that strikes me is the number of options for burgers and fries. I'm pretty excited to go back and work my way through the various options.

This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Lawrence. It's a great hole-in-the-wall place to get a supreme burger and a beer. They have tons of beer variety, as well as a great range of burgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, sauces, and fries. My favorite is the Smoke Burger. It comes with their house catsup, which is spicier and more cinnamon-y than your regular Heinz ketchup. It takes some getting used to, but it's flavorful and unique. I personally don't like truffle fries, but a lot of my friends who do say that Burger Stand's truffle fries are some of the best they've ever had. My favorite fries are hands-down the sweet potato fries. I generally get a range of sauces, but Burger Stand doesn't limit you to 1 or 2 small cups of sauce. You can have as much as you want, and try every kind. Guadajillo chili is my personal preference. One tip: they generally undercook the burgers. So if you like your beef bloody, then you'll definitely be happy. I personally prefer medium-well burgers. At Burger Stand, I order well-done and it is cooked to my usual medium-well satisfaction. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who will listen. Whenever I have guests, I always bring them to Burger Stand for dinner.

Highly disappointing from what it was. Used to have friendly staff, killer food, and good prices. Now, every member of the staff seems to have a stick up their butt that they just can't get out. Due to allergies, (which was explained to them) I asked if I could order a plain burger patty. I specifically asked if there was just an "add patty" button that they could use without charging me for the whole burger with everything on it. They tried to ring it up as a full burger (about $10) without telling me, and I stopped them asking if there was no other way to do it. That's when the waitress, in the most condescending way she could, "explained" to me how their pos system worked and how their burgers came with blue cheese or avocado, etc. And I would have to pay for it all. I instead ordered a kids burger, (just the burger) as it would at least come with fries. I asked if I could pay more for truffle, duck fat, or cajun fries, as I don't care for french fries. They said I'd have to pay for the regular fries and then I could also order a separate side of fries, which of course I can't eat that much. Apparently, even though all the sides of fries are the same price, they can't dump a little seasoning on regular fries (even if you pay extra) which is what I've always done here with no problem. Funnily enough, two guys came up to the window and asked for a little Cajon seasoning in a ramekin and the cooks said "no problem," despite the waitresses insistence that they couldn't do that for me. I've worked in small restaurants since I was 14, and have been everything from a server, to a cook, to a manager, and haven't dealt with this type of ridiculousness. To me, this place has gone way far down in customer service by trying to pretend to be bigger and better than they are. Also, they were very slow in terms of how many customers they had, yet the burgers were over-cooked and the truffle fries were the worst we've had. Sad that we won't be back. Used to be our favorite place, but not worth the 45 minutes of driving to come here anymore.

YUM! It was a stiff claim when the bf told me he knew where the best burger in Kansas could be found outside of Kansas City. I have my own very strong opinions about burgers and was beyond skeptical. I stand before you a converted believer in The Burger Stand. We had two burgers but the burger coma and increasing 30's moments has prevented me from remembering which. What do I remember? The melted Gouda that made me curse the lactose gods for making me limit how much I could try, the meat that was cooked to absolute perfection, and the fact that it was picture worthy when my gluttony helped push me through to the last bite of these decadent and delicious burgers. There are a few things that people learn out my eating eating habits very quickly and one of those things was 100% proven at The Burger Stand...I freaking love Ketchup. And other condiments. But really just Ketchup. This place has the BEST condiments bar I've been to in a very long time. An entire shelf of homemade sauces that range from this awesome Ketchup to melted Marshmallow wonderment-or so I call it-that would be divine on their Sweet Potato Fries. We tried the Duck Fat Fries per my boyfriend's insistence but the next time I go, those Sweet Potato Fries will be mine! It's ok if you don't go to Burger Stand. It makes the line shorter for me! But you really should go. You'll thank me when your food coma has passed and your mouth is salivating for another visit.

I went here with a group of friends after a 5k run for the first time. The set-up for how to order is a bit odd, but my burger was incredible! Probably one of the best burgers I've had. It was juicy, the bun was perfect, and they also had a wide variety of burgers to choose from as well as healthy alternatives.

Ok, so when I order a beer at your checkout/bar, I dont feel that I should A) have to go with my 4th choice because you are out of everything on your list, and B) shouldn't have to tell all 3 bartenders which bottle I need and direct them via 2nd shelf, 3rd on down, blue label, and C) shouldn't have to open my own bottle of beer, as your hipsters are busy hipster-ing. Food is ok, nothing special, and if they were actually stocked, the beer list would be pretty good. As it stands, they have Mickeys and PBR, and a great little printed out list of shit I wish I could drink there.

My favorite burger joint and a popular place, as it's always packed!

This is absolutely in my standard rotation of Lawrence restaurants. To order your food, you have to give the server a code-name (think Chewbacca/Colonel Sanders/Jeff Withey) and they call it out loud when it's ready! You have not lived until you get the Smoke Burger w/ Truffle Fries. Make sure to get at least 3 sauces with it! This is highly vegetarian-friendly (though I would never opt out of a juicy burger from the Casbah!). They have old generation consoles downstairs that they let people play for free! On game days, this place is especially popular. How can you beat Casbah burgers while watching the Jayhawks demolish another opponent??

The real go-to place for creative sauces. The burgers at the burger stand have a hefty price to live up to; and often they do. Usually seasonal toppings and condiments that can sometimes (read: mostly) outshine the burger itself. The fries are known around town and indeed they live up to expectations often enough. The sweet potato and truffle are excellent. Go on Tuesday's for the chicken special. Great Deal.

Also great for vegetarians---there are 4 regular menu sandwiches and the night I was there one of the specials was also veggie (don't ask me about vegan, I don't know). I had the signature Romesco burger which is made from lentils with feta...yum, but bring a friend, with the giant side of fries I was mismatched. Will try the quinoa dog next time I think.

Oh my, this place is DIVINE! I haven't written a review before now, and I'm glad I didn't. I can easily give The Burger Stand 5 stars after my meal this last weekend! All three of us ordered Smoke Burgers and I, finally, had the opportunity to order it with a turkey patty! Previously you couldn't get any of the burgers with a turkey patty unless turkey was the special for the week. This is SO MUCH BETTER!! Thanks guys! We also ordered the sweet potato fries and the fried pickles. The fries were just awesome. I'm probably never going to get anything else again (that's a lie, they're all good). The fried pickles were good, but I definitely prefer the pickle chips as opposed to the spears when I eat fried pickles. They were definitely fresh when they came out as we had to wait nearly 5 minutes before they weren't roughly the temperature of the surface of the sun. I probably won't order the pickles again, but everything else was stellar! My only wish? Can you somehow make it to where the public can buy a bottle of the chipotle-cocoa ketchup to take home?? Please?? Pretty please??

To be honest, as a foreigner, I have never imagined that the burger could be this good. I am okay to eat fast food burgers but not like it. The burger here outclasses any fast food restaurant. Their burgers showed me what the good burger should be. They are juicy and very delicious. I love the smoke burger and fire burger a lot!!!! The smoke burger is very juicy. The fire burger is my most favorite which mixes the taste of meat and spicy sauce perfectly. This place is one of my two favorite burger restaurants so far!

These type of places are popping up everywhere in America, the gourmet burger joints. So many are the same with the modern decor and overpriced burgers and drinks. But, this one is not, and I was impressed from the moment I walked in. Located on Mass St. in Lawrence, is the Burger Stand. It's dark, has a dive bar feel to it. You order at the bar instead of having a server come to your table. After ordering, you choose a table and have your name called. All homemade sauces to accompany your burger, dog, and sides. Really cool, laid back college kids are running the place. Goodbye Blanc Burger, hello Burger Stand!

Very warm, rock-loud and comfortable bar vibe. Even though it was very pretty, I thought my falafel burger was only so so, and that was before I found a very looooong white/blond hair running right through the actual burger...Now if the burger had been fantastic or something, maybe I would have worked around it or some shit, because sometimes I'm raw like that, but this wasn't to be one of those times. I would come back again and again for the multiple varieties of delicious fries and just make a meal out of that, because bar food should probably be as fried as possible and because hot ass grease usually can take care of any wiley hairs or germs or whatnot.

Seriously, I have never reviewed this place? Was there again last night, Kobe burger rocked, beer was outstanding. Bottom line...to quote Denis Leary, "If God didn't want us to eat meat, why did he make the cow so slow? (Ever eaten a cheetah-burger? Nope. And you never will." Great burgers, worth a detour off the highway, or a regular spot in the rotation!

Okay, I'm updating this because I feel like I can finally bury the hatchet regarding their awful tofu, all thanks to a recent addition we discovered last night. It's not even listed on the menu yet, but if they don't keep it around I may never forgive them. What is this thing I'm raving about, you ask? WELL. I believe I have mentioned how much I love sweet potato fries, and especially the ones here. Last night, as usual, I ordered my burger (the falafel, delish as always) with a side order of sweet potato fries, and the boyfriend had them with his meal as well. When I went to the window to pick up our order, I noticed that they had included some sort of white sauce in a small cup in addition to the standard cherry-pepper ketchup they always throw in. I assumed it was the garlic-Parmesan aioli Carol R. has raved so much about. Not so! The boyfriend was a tease about it, not telling me what it was but asking me to tell him what it reminded me of once I'd tried it. When I took my first bite, I was immediately transported back to Thanksgiving dinner at my grandma's house, remembering her delicious sweet potato casseroles, sweet and hot and brimming with butter and cinnamon, all topped off with a thick layer of gooey, melty... MARSHMALLOWS. Holy crap. They have a marshmallow cream dipping sauce. MOTHEREFFING MARSHMALLOWS, YOU GUYS. Go there, get some, thank me later.

The quality of the burgers survived the migration from Dempsey's, for sure. So did the gorgeous salad served in lieu of a bun for this non-grain-eater. The Kobe beef burger was perfectly medium (not that faded gray that passes for "medium" at most restaurants), and was plenty juicy enough to serve as its own dressing for the salad. This is a good thing, because TAKE NOTE, CELIACS! The vinaigrette served on the side is made with canola and soy--probably not gluten-free. Lack of an olive-oil vinaigrette is my only complaint about the food. They have the resources to fry their potatoes in duck fat, but they can't shell out the extra cash for olive oil? C'mon. The staff is friendly and helpful even though this is not a full-service restaurant. I'm fine with that, although I have never been a fan of the find-a-table-after-you-order arrangement. It makes me nervous. I am a creature of habit and comfort, what can I say? Just make sure there's a member of your party available to shark a table while someone else orders. They don't advertise their drink specials very well (no chalkboard or anything behind the bar) so be sure to check the table tents before you place your drink order.

Best burger I have ever had. They also have a veggie dog that is unlike anything I have has before and it is so good. If you are within 2 hours of Lawrence, KS then go here. There are lots a great burgers out there but not like this.

Best designer burgers you will find in the Lawrence, KS or Kansas City area. Better than Blanc Burger in my opinion. Try the Kobe, Black & Blue, or Smoke Burger. You can't go wrong here! Make sure you also get some Duck Fat or Truffle fries. You won't be able to stop eating these.

This place is da bomb. Not only do they offer several different types of burgers but practically everything is homemade. No frozen patties here people. From the unique condiments to the hand-dipped corny dogs, The Burger Stand at the Casbah is the burger place to go in Lawrence. A great place to go for lunch or a night out (if you want to munch on some fries) the service is quick and efficient. They offer plenty of entertainment, from flat-screens showing the latest news/sports games, oh and you can't forget the cool loft sitting upstairs. If you are going to go, I'd start the with classic burger and the truffle fries! My friends and I can be spotted here probably once a week. Enjoy!

The highlight of our visit to Lawrence. This place is NOT overrated. It actually is near perfection if not there already. Husband got Smoke burger with poutine fries (slathered with cheese and gravy). I got Samurai burger (with shitake mushroom and wasabi cream) with truffle fries. Everything tasted amazing (good beef, good condiments), and for a gourmet burger with a side, the price could be worse. The truffle fries were nearly orgasmic, and even though I am rather small, I ate just about everything on my plate, just because it was so delicious. They have burgers, dogs, veggie options... It's great, and there are still so many things that I want to try that I didn't get the option to, because we've only been the one time. I am so looking forward to duck fat fries. You walk in, and then at the end of the counter on your left you order food. Smartly, the line wraps around on the side of the people sitting in booths so you can stare at their food as you move down the line towards heaven. We've talked about making more trips to Lawrence from Kansas City JUST to go to the Burger Stand at the Casbah.

If I had to pick one thing to develop connoisseur-ship in, it would undoubtedly be cheeseburgers. If there were a school to become the equivalent of a cheeseburger sommelier, I would drop everything else and sign up in a heartbeat. I have had a wide range of cheeseburgers in a variety of restaurants, languages, and time zones. The Burger Stand is in my top two. Their Smoke Burger, Black & Bleu, and Classic are the perfect solution to any cheeseburger emergency. Generous patties of quality meat form a perfect union with expertly selected and crafted toppings to create a wide range of tasty burgers. Every special I've ever had here has also been delicious, though I can pinpoint the Buffalo Burger's goat-cheesy goodness as my favorite special. To top it all off, you can select from a range of tasty accoutrements to complete your feast. The ever-popular truffle fries are my personal favorite, though I've had good experiences with the normal, sweet potato, and duck fat fries as well. The tap list is even pretty decent (especially for Lawrence), with strong showings from O'Dell and local favorite Free State. Don't expect to walk out without plunking down at least $10 per person, though. Once you've selected fries and a beverage, you're well into "gourmet burger" price range. Also, leftovers (which I frequently have) heat up with varying levels of success. You can get away with reheating most burgers, but your fries are toast as soon as they hit the box. All in all, Dempsey's is a must-visit for Lawrencians and visitors alike. I have drug friends from all corners of the U.S. to sample this burger-y goodness, and all have agreed that The Burger Stand stands out on the national level. Face it, you're probably going to get heart disease anyways - might as well do it in the tastiest way possible.

the smell that wafts from this almost overlooked restaurant is one which you will not soon forget. I had the pleasure of eating here w/ a few friends and was giddy at the selection of food, beer and the overall atmosphere of this place. I had the rabbit dog and it was a mouthwatering delight. The prices are more than reasonable, especially considering the quality of ingredients are used in creating this unpretentious fare and the beer selection is impressive. I look forward to my next visit and can honestly say I didnt see one thing on the menu that I do not want to sample

The burgers and fries here are excellent. That's all I am going to say about those two items - instead I will focus on a couple great aspects of this places often overlooked. 1. The hot dogs. There's debate over the best burger in Lawrence, but no debate over the best hot dogs. The Burger Stand should be called the Dog Stand (although some people might get the wrong idea - woof woof!). The Chicago Dog alone is worth the price of admission, and is the real deal, as real as what you might find outside Wrigley Field, with all the proper accoutrements, right down to the peppers and celery salt. 2. The beer selection. There's around 10-12 beers on tap, and they are good, carefully selected microbrews. 3. The environment. The Burger Stand has four separate "areas" each one with its own vibe - there's the bar, a seating area off the bar, a downstairs area (quieter, but with a view of the kitchen), and an airy, open upstairs with a pool table.

Took my step-father and son here last night for dinner. He had the classic and I had the black and blue, Jr. had the kids burger. The burgers were great but, I don't think that the grill masters definition of well and medium well matched what our definitions are. Mine was med-rare and his was medium. Definitely not worth sending them back but still disappointing for first time visitors. On a positive note, we loved the truffle fries and the beer choice was A#1.

Great burger joint and not a bad bar either. Hamburgers are large and tasty. Wide range of selection for all tastes. Fries are excellent with a series of different kinds including sweet potato and tofu. They make their own dipping sauces too which are very tasty. Great place to meet friends.

I will say, I did not know what to expect when going here, but it was a pleasant surprise. First off, the burgers are amazing and great and big. You cannot go wrong with the fries either. Where this place earns its real mark for me is in the beer hall. I have been looking for a good bar with a good old fashioned vibe and this is it. Great bartenders, great beer, and just a good vibe to watch a game in. I will most def be going back.

After starting out in Dempsey's Irish Pub, the Burger Stand has moved into its own location on Mass St. Thankfully, aside from the location, little has changed. As the name suggests, the Burger Stand does one thing and does it well. As someone who has attempted to visit every known burger joint in Lawrence, The Burger Stand is not only the best hamburger in Lawrence, but the best in Kansas in my mind. They serve about 7 or so different burgers, from a standard burger to Kobe to Blue Cheese. My personal favorite is the Smoke Burger which comes with a chipotle BBQ sauce, some greens and tons of bacon. Not sorry, limp bacon, but thick, wavy perfectly cooked bacon. You can also order regular fries, truffle fries and I believe they may have sweet potato fries, although I'm not sure. The fries are better than average. I personally stay away from the pickle served with the burgers, as it tastes like cloves. The new location is your standard Mass St. restaurant front. They have several booths, a full bar and various smaller tables scattered throughout. It seems to be about the same capacity as Dempsey's. It looks like they have some extra space they could eventually begin utilizing in the future. The staff is very friendly. Cost wise, if you just get a burger and fries you're looking at around the $10 range, depending on what kind of burger and fries you get. The couple extra bucks you spend here on a hamburger is definitely worth the quality you will receive.

Duck. Fat. Fries. I think that humans might have an entire taste sense purely for these things. I have never wanted to actually taste the grease on fries, but for some reason, this particular oil is so tasty, so decadent, you can't help but want to nearly *dip* your fries in it. My diet is so angry with me right now. I had "The Smoke" when I was there, which was a big deal because usually I don't eat bacon. I REALLY enjoyed my burger. The boy got a straight up Kobe burger, and he really loved it too. But we were in a straight out battle for those fries. I cannot wait to go back and possibly sample a HOT DOG from there, as I've never had a Chicago dog, and I hear that these are pretty much the real deal. Great job with your new location, Casbah!

Heard so much and wanted a good burger. First there was nowhere to sit and a line out the door but they wouldn't open the basement. Got food after more than an hour and my Kobe burger was over cooked and didn't seem to have any of the many goodies listed on the menu, it was just pickled onions and those were sickeningly sweet. The fries were tasty but none of the condiments were in their right place so we never knew what we were getting and they were all filthy. The garlic Parmesan sauce is gross, marshmallow is interesting and the chili one was delish. Ultimately who wants improperly cooked Kobe? If its not going to be tender just use any old burger

Huge, delicious burgers and tasty fries; a little pricey, but worth it now and then. I have had most of the burgers, with the exception of the Fire burger, because I am a baby when it comes to spicy heat. All were glorious. When you eat here multiple times, it becomes less glorious overtime, but still wonderful. They also offer hot dogs, corn dogs, and an assortment of vegetarian and non-beef burgers, but I always go for the beef. As for fries...truffle are my favorite. Maybe I'm just crazy, but I feel like the duck fat fries were tastier when the Burger Stand was at Dempsey's - those ones seemed to have a citrusy flavor, and these not so much. I was less than thrilled with the poutine, but that was again, back at Dempsey's so maybe it had changed for the better. I was too frustrated with the first try that I have not considered ordering again. There were very few cheese curds and they were barely hot, and not as much gravy as I'd have liked. Maybe I will one day try again. I have not had the sweet potato fries, but sweet potato fries are usually delicious. They have a full bar, I believe, with nightly specials and appear to have a decent selection of beer and wine. Price is a bit high ($10+ for burger and fries), and you order at the counter and wait for your name to be called. It's kind of nice if you want to gather a group of friends at an approximate time, since everyone can order and eat as they come, but it can be hard to find table space during busy times.

I had the Classic burger and my spouse had the fire burger. We shared the truffle fries. Food - The classic burger was very plain. Just cheese and some arugula on top of a burger and a toasted bun. The burger was thick with good taste and cooked well. My spouse's Fire Burger was just that. Too hot for him to finish. His lips were burning and he was sweating. Fun if you like that sort of thing. The Truffle fries have Parmesan on top and are tasty. They have a variety of sauces to compliment many flavor combinations. The sweet potato fries with the marshmallow sauce are like eating dessert. The food is a little pricey but decent. Not anywhere I would call a "Must eat" The place only gets 4 stars because I'm pretty sure their air conditioning doesn't work at all! Most everyone was sweating during their meal. Lighting could be a little better. Everything was muted and it was hard to see your food.

Great, every time! Get the smoke burger! Duck fat fries are amazing, as are onion rings and... everything else! Never had a bad experience here! Best burgers in Lawrence. If you come around dinner time expect a line, but it usually moves pretty quickly. Great atmosphere for hanging out with friends, or even a casual date.

Excellent burgers, duck fries, and beer. All at reasonable prices. Everything a restaurant in a college town should be. The gold standard of burger joints.

  • Cory D.

Delicious. This is one of those joints great for meeting up with some friends, enjoying some good food (and reasonable atmosphere) and planning out what the night has in store. Good: The burgers are quite tasty (I recommend the "Fire" burger) and the fries (duck fat being my favorite) are an excellent compliment, and very nice on their own. The beer selection is rather robust for a boutique place, and seating is ample as well. If you're looking for a place to hold a private party, the basement is available to rent out for several guests, and comes complete with a separate bar. Bad: The food and drinks, while not prohibitively expensive, are a bit pricey. It can occasionally be a bit difficult to hear your order being called, though this is less a problem if you're seated close to the pick-up window or (like many others) use an exotic pseudonym for ordering purposes. If you're in downtown Lawrence and in the mood for some casual dining with friends, give this place a try.

I wish there was a 6th star; this place truly deserves it. The sauces are money. The beer is cold and the sweet potato fries are stellar. I was there with my boyfriend's friends and the food was so good that I could completely ignore the dick and fart jokes and enjoy my meal. :)

I love the Burger Stand. I think it is the best burger in Lawrence. All the options are great, I've had the traditional burger, the kobe beef burger, and two specialty burgers. I think the sweet potato fries are great with the marshmallow dipping sauce. Chipotle-cocoa dippping sauce is my favorite for all the fries (truffle/duck fat/original etc.) The service can take awhile if they are busy but it is more than worth the wait! The portions are large and always great. I always recommend this place to friends.

This is the restaurant that led me to break my barrier between casual Yelp browser and current reviewer. I ordered the Kobe Beef burger to go, with a side order of sweet potato fries. The Kobe Beef is topped with pickled onions and truffle butter. You may not know what this combination would taste like, but let me tell you in one world: DELICIOUS. This whole restaurant smells of a more general type of goodness as you're walking by it. As I drove back home, burger in tow, I'm not sure how I a) avoided an accident because of the wonderful smell in the seat next to me or b) stopped in the middle to eat it. The burger was done medium, and it was of a perfect texture, almost melting in my mouth. I usually eat burgers with a lot of ketchup or barbeque sauce. I was a bit hesitant to add none, but it was a wise choice, since the flavor was already so excellent. The sweet potato fries were pretty good as well, but they will not be engrained in my memory like the burger. PS The pickle, although by the time I ate it was a bit soggy, has excellent flavor. Both spicy and tangy in a way pickles normally aren't. But this was different in a good way. (If you haven't realized it yet, I love pickles). I will be back, Burger Stand.

I first fell in love when The Burger Stand when they were located in Dempsey's pub. After the move, I feared their food might go down hill (hey, it happens), but it didn't. The burgers are still delicious as are their vegetarian options. My favorite dish is the rabbit dog - a rabbit sausage served with carrot ketchup on a hot dug bun. The poutin is wonderful, especially since it can be hard to find poutin this far south of Canada. I will say the ordering situation is crowded and can clog traffic. The place can get quite crowded which is great for them, but can make it hard to find a decent place to sit. Probably not the best place for intimate conversation. Their bartenders do a great job and I'm a big fan of their beer selection. An excellent place to grab a burger, have a couple beers, and enjoy the atmosphere.

Definitely my favorite burger place in Lawrence, maybe anywhere. I'm a vegetarian and they have limitless options, which is a rarity, especially for a burger place. The fries are amazing, especially the truffle fries and the cajun fries (Cajun fries may have been a special, not sure they are on the standard menu. I no longer live in the area, and am always dying to come back. Also don't miss the sauce bar in the back by the kitchen window, the marshmallow sauce on truffle fries is to die for. Service has always been good and quick.

Its always a great day when I get to head back to Mass St. in Lawrence for some grub and I was especially impressed with this place. I got the Fire burger which was dressed with a spicy jelly and avocado. Good kick but not too spicy. And dare I say the best truffle fries I've had to date. I also saw they had a great assortment of specialty sodas and beer. And I loved the decor. Very cool wood plank bars and tables. Laid back style. Great food. Awesome joint.

One of the only two good burger places in town. However, I don't like standing in line to order, having to get our own drinks, and pick up our own food. I would gladly tip a server to do it! This set up makes for a chaotic meal when they are busy - sometimes one person in your party needs to save a seat, while the others order. Good hamburgers, (the truffle fries are better at Dempsey's.) They used to put microgreens on the burgers, but no longer do. If you order a rare burger, it actually comes out rare. The duck fat fries are sinful, but amazing. Good place to watch a game. Lawrence is lucky to have this place.

Walk in, follow the signs down to the other end of the bar, place order. Seems a lot like Esquina only no one bitches about the layout at the Burger Stand. Go figure! I had the Smoke; great burger. If I have to complain about something, the "chipotle-cocoa ketchup" seemed lacking in the "chipotle-cocoa" end. The wife had the Black & Blue; judging by the non-existent leftovers, she enjoyed it to the last bite. I did try the Granny Smith apple chutney from her burger which, IMHO, seemed rather like a waste of perfectly good Granny Smiths. The Truffle fries were decadent; almost overkill for fries. I'm sure the Poutine and Duck Fat fries are as well, but I'll certainly try them on my next visit, but somehow I see myself settling on "regular" once I've tried the rest. I will say that they had the best sweet potato fries I've ever had. I'm not necessarily a big fan of sweet potato fries (perhaps because no one else does them this well?), but these were perfect. Crispy without being overdone. An above average beer selection is icing on the cake. The Fire burger will probably be next as there will most certainly be a next time.

The Burger Stand is consistently delicious...really...every time! Our recent visit we had the featured BBQ burger. So good! The one and only disappointment I've had in all of my trips here were the featured Cajun fries. They were powdery and heavy from all the seasoning on them, and the strange part was there still wasn't much cajun flavor. The other fries are always incredible because they are crispy, perfectly juicy and seasoned. That being said, GO to the Burger Stand for an awesome burger and (truffle)(sweet potato) fries every time! Also, they have one of the best vegetarian selections on classic american fare i've seen in town (lentil burger, black bean burger, quinoa hot dog).

I went here when I was on vacation to KC/Lawrence earlier this month. We were meeting an old friend and she said to meet here. At first I was not sure what to get because the options seemed plentiful, especially their fries. I decided on the smoke burger without the bacon and the cashier (whose name I forgot) was extremely helpful. He told me it would be cheaper for me to order the classic since it would be a little less because I didnt want the bacon, but I still got the smoked gouda on it. And when I ordered a beer, he recommended the taps that were on special. I really appreciated how he went the extra step. I also ordered the truffle fries which were really good, but my friend had the sweet potato fries with the roasted marshmallow dip, that was the star...truly amazing. This place was really nice and if i get the chance to return to Lawrence, would love to go again.

88 Reviews with 4 and a half stars couldn't be wrong! Well actually it was wrong, how this doesn't have an average 5 star rating is beyond me! My friend and I visited the Burger Stand on 1/27 VERY late, right before they switched to the night time smaller menu. I had the Kobe Burger and he had the Black and Blue and we both were blown away! We split a side of the Truffle Fries and Duck Fat Fries and they were fantastic! Then to boot, after the meal was over, to finish up with homemade pickles that were packed with so many different types of flavor was icing on the cake. If there was a way to give 6 stars I'd give it! Can't be missed if you're in Lawrence!

Burger = The Tops. Big, tasty, nicely cooked, good bun, loved it. FIVE STARS for the burger. Duck Fat Fries = What the ??? I was dying to try these fries, and they were the biggest disappointment ever. A big basket of stinking, greasy bllecchh. We were there late-nite, and I would be willing to think maybe the A Team wasn't in the kitchen, but my-oh-my, I wouldn't have served this pile of blech to drunk college students. Don't know if I am that unworldly (I eat and like a lot of varied and even bizarre stuff, so I don't think that was it), or if it was an off night, but I wanted my money back, an apology, and a de-odorizing bath. I feel like I'm being generous to give ZERO STARS for the duck fat fries. Going back soon for another burger ... I'll think I'll try the truffle fries or onion rings, or maybe just smuggle in some vinegar chips.

The Burger Stand's new location at the Casbah is great! They did a wonderful job with the remodel and decorating. The only minus was that they seemed to overlook the bathroom (at least the women's) during the remodel. Yuck. The food is incredible. The burgers are huge and well made. The toppings for the various burgers really help the meat shine. What a delicious treat! The fries might be the best part of the meal. They have classic, sweet potato, truffle, duck fat, and poutine (gravy/cheese). I have never tried the poutine, but everything else is amazing! Duck fat is pretty greasy. The truffle fries are slightly salty with the addition of parmesan cheese. The Sweet potato fries might take the cake for a lot of people and are extra good dipped in the house aioli, thought the house catsup is good too! The beer selection is good, the tap choices are solid, they changed with the seasons at the last location, to early to tell here. The bottled beers here are pretty good too. Hidden secret, they have at least two great bottled root beers too! This place can get a little pricy if you get a burger, fries, and a drink. However, the portions are great for sharing or leftovers!

Definitely some of the best burgers I've had! Habanero Cactus jelly on avocado on a pile of delicious meat and cheese? Yes, please! The sweet potato fries are yummy and crispy, and the hand battered corn dogs are sooo good. The only thing I'd like to see is a better choice of mustard for the corn dog and a supply of plain ol' ketchup because some things don't need to be questioned. But never fear- the great drink selection makes me forget about the mustard and ketchup. As a final note, they have South Park Pinball. Yay!

This place is as legit as it gets. The burgers are all baller and the fries are awesome too. There's always a pretty exciting special to jump into. You'll see alot of things that you might not be comfortable with (chutney, microgreens) on a burger and it'll force you outside zone into an new exciting way to enjoy meat. Glorious, exotic, spicy meat.

I grew up on a farm. My dad always had a cow or two ready for butcher. I have had more than my share of burgers. This place rivals the best! I love the variety here from the basic burger to fancy, gourmet burgers. The homemade dipping sauces are a perfect compliment to the amazing truffle fries. I like my beef cooked all the way through so have learned to order well-done. Their "medium" almost moos when you take a bite. I really love the addition of kids meals. They come with fries at a fair price under $5.00. The hot dog is actually half a hot dog so not the best choice for a hungry older child. A burger and fries will run you at least $10.00 so probably not the place to head on a budget, but it is a great place to splurge on a great burger!

The truffle fries are amazing. Honestly, every burger I have had from here is amazing and keep your eye out for specials (wild boar anyone?). The best place to eat in Lawrence, if not the entire world.

Good burger, not cooked well enough for me but good taste. The sweet potato fries were a different change from the normal but 5-6 is more than enough. I got the burger with the habernero pepper sauce. It was good just didn't have the bite I had expected it to. It's another one of those places that I can say I've been to and that's good enough but prob not good enough to go back.

I've recently started cutting red meat out of my diet. As a huge fan of The Burger Stand, it was difficult to pass up the juicy, delicious beef that they do oh so well. I knew I had options, though: you can get turkey. There's also a lentil burger, a quinoa hot dog and a falafel burger. I opted for the falafel with truffle fries. I dare say it was almost as good as the beef burgers I've had in the past. No lie.

easily the best burger in the region, and certainly the best sweet potato fries I've ever had. service was awesome, even at midnight on a quiet Thursday. I could ask for nothing more. please replicate in Kansas City.

It's hard for me to not give The Burger Stand five stars. I've had four of the burgers on the menu and each one of them was spectacular. My favorite right now is the samurai burger. This burger has shitake mushrooms with a wasabi goat cheese cream sauce. Cooked to perfection using quality beef this burger has just the right amount of kick to keep it interesting. My stand-by burger is the Black & Blue with Maytag blue cheese and an Granny Smith apple chutney. With many different varieties of french fries to choose from, including truffle, smoked tofu, and duck fat fries as well as the standard sweet potato and classic fries. The poutine fries are a meal in itself. It can get pretty crowded on the weekends but during the week you shouldn't have a problem finding a table. The burgers range a little on the high side ($7-$9), but they are well worth the price.

Just to point out one overlooked point...the Burger Stand serves grass-fed, organic burgers from a Kansas City beef company. Since this wasn't advertised, I asked the general manager via email and he was kind enough to respond in detail. So for any localvores or "real beef" (i.e. anti-corn fed) eaters, rest assured that you're getting the best here.

Everytime I am in Lawrence, i stop at this place. This place has duck fat fries that are out of this world. The burgers are solid and very well priced. If this place opened in KC, it would put all the other burger places to shame and possibly out of business.

A solid burger joint - love the combos with the pre-selected burger, fries, and beer for the perfect combination. Also love that everything is locally sourced, fitting right in with the socially-aware Lawrence vibe. I think The Burger Stand will serve perfectly as my out-of-town mistress while my loyalities will continue to reside with Blanc (my hometown favorite.)

30 miles for a burger? You betcha! This burger tops the list of best burgers EVER! I had the 'spice' burger with Habenaro Jam and avocado...I know, true afficionados will not go for this burger, but the burger itself really stood alone, without all the fixins.... top quality ingredients- did i mention the duck fat fries? I am an onion ring lover and I will say that for 'beer battered' rings-these rank on top! Can't wait to go back.. now to review Dempsey's ......

OMG I LOVE BURGER STAND. First of all, I come here about once a week. The specials are always changing and the service is good! I love the casual ambiance of the bar, the bar tenders are always friendly and hilarious. This is one of the few places in Lawrence where I can eat alone on a lunch break and feel totally normal and welcomed. I love the vegetarian selections, even though I am not a vegetarian. Lentil burgers, the succotash, the tofu burger...they are all great! The meat burgers are to die for as well! Ask for the marshmallow sauce with the sweet potato fries if you like sweet and salty combinations.

Been wanting to try this place for quite sometime since I have heard Great reviews of this place, but always been kind of hestiance since when you hear a movie is good and it is all talked up from others, then when you go it sucks. That is not true with this place. It lives up to its reviews plus I live a little bit away but would now travel just to go here again. As your walking by the bar you can smell the tastyness!! They have burgers, hot dogs and even provide for the vegetarian/vegan. This is a bar so they do have a variety of beers/ales but not my thing there. I ordered: The Smoke Burger which has Applewood Smoked Bacon, Gouda Cheese and Chipotle-Cocoa Ketchup. This is a very good burger, not spicy at all, just their version of nice bacon cheese burger that is very yummy. The Rabbit Dog which has Jalapeno-apple jam and roasted carrot ketchup. Once you get this hot dog the firt thing that comes in your mind is wow that is a lot of diced Jalapenos on that dog but once you pinch some off just to try it you will love it. It isn't too spicy or too sweet, as Goldilocks says "Just Right." Only thing one may complain about is the outer coating of the dog might be too thick. The Truffle fries I wasn't that impressed with like everyone else here but the plus side they do have a variety of sauces you would like to at least try once to figure out which ones you would love. The Duck Fat fries were SUPER YUMMY!!! Very recommended. Then the other person ordered: The Black & Blue with Maytag blue cheese and granny smith apple chutney. The apple chutney is very delicious on the burger. Had some fall on the sliced pickle that comes with each sandwich and ate the pickle with it on it, was very good. Had some Fried Pickles as well but nothing special.

Sick. Sick. Sick. I ordered the Bleu burger and the apple chutney was vile. Nothing should be that shade of yellow. The burger was half done. I love medium rare steak but this was a stretch. The duck fat fries were equally gross. The 'fat' looked like gelatinous fryer grease. sorry folks, but this place will turn your stomach. Literally.

  • Peter L.

Great burger's and fries in somewhat crowded but still nice location. The burgers are really good, cooked to order more or less as you like them (IE rare or well, etc). Good quality toppings and unique combination's available. Mostly self service but you'll figure it out unless your totally brain dead.... A most stop if you like burgers.

    (4)
  • Meredith S.

I'm done giving the Burger Stand chances! Service was mediocre, as usual! They can't cook a burger to order to save their lives - which is pretty bad for a burger place! Gourmet? More like gross. I can do much better at home for much less. Won't be back.

Overall, best burger in town hands down. The truffle fries are delightful if you like truffle oil but the regular fries are A-OK in my books. I have not tried the duck fat fries, but I have had rave reviews from the party I dined with. The burgers are awesome, and I do like my burgers served medium, which is what is recommended by the wait staff. However, at times I have noticed that the burger pattie was a tiny bit cold (sort of frozen). Slightly annoying, so please order it 'medium well' or 'well done' if that is something that will irk you. Taste test. When I am in the mood for a sweet burger, I always make it down to the Casbah, problem is when I'm in the mood for a regular burger I have no place to go. If you notice, each burger always has some condiment that is sweet, for example, the 'smoke burger' has chipotle cocoa ketchup, and the 'romesco' has roasted red pepper sauce, not always something I am in the mood for. I am confident the staff will be happy to remove or just make a plain burger if you ask them to. So give that a try! Would I go there again. I already do! And I recommend you get down there and try it at least once. Enjoy! Hope this review helped you in making your ordering decisions.

I really do like this place, but it could definitely be better. On the positive side, the medium-cooked burger I ordered was actually medium-cooked, which is almost never the case elsewhere. It was also very smoky, juicy, and delicious. I really enjoyed my Classic burger. The Black and Blue burger that I tried on my next visit was unfortunately disappointing. The burger itself was good, the bleu cheese was good, but the apple chutney topping was strange and overwhelming. A little sweetness is fine, but this was WAY too sweet and plentiful. My burger was completely smothered in this sauce that was an odd, unappealing neon yellow color. Since it covered the bleu cheese, scraping it off would mean scraping off the cheese, and one should NEVER scrape off cheese. It was pretty unpleasant. I also haven't been too impressed with the fries. I've had both truffle fries and duck fat fries, both of which tasted kind of off to me. I love all the dipping sauce options, though, and most of them are wonderful. With a few changes, The Burger Stand could be a lot better, but for now, I just think there are better options.

They have the most unique burgers and fries in town. I've been there probably 10-15 times and I've only had a burger I didn't love once, and that's just because the bun got a little too soggy from grease or possibly the other ingredients.

I've eaten here a grand total of once, simply because I live in New York and I'm not in Lawrence often. I came on the recommendation of my brother (a doctoral student at K.U. for 7 years) and my nephew (who was visiting for a few days). My nephew said "you just have to taste the best hamburger you'll ever eat". Now, he doesn't get out of rural Texas often, so I wasn't too sure about that. So, I went the next day with my mother and my nephew. We had 3 burgers: Fire, Smoke, and Black and Blue. We carefully cut each one into fourths and shared. We also had the classic, sweet potato, and duck fat fries. I have to say, my nephew was right. These were the best burgers I've had. Period. If you're in the area, check out the Burger Stand. If you're not a student, think about going at a time that you think students wouldn't be there (think early in the evening). Oh, do have the duck fat fries. You really need to taste them! And I like the Fire burger the best, though I liked all 3 of them. Super tasty combination of hot, sweet, and savory.

Jayhawk spicy chicken sandwich , a Smoke burger, a side of cajun fries and two guiness drafts. Yum. No complaints about fries like earlier review. We found them to be crispy and full of flavor. Definitely plan to drive in from KC for another meal.

So sorry for not getting back to my review on this place. I've been back there a couple times since my first review, and the place has not failed to please. The black-n-blue burger is nearly as addictive as the truffle fries. This has become my favorite lunch stop while out cruising on the motorcycle. Now I just gotta work my way through the beer rotation... Very solid food, place is always clean.

I was excited to try the Burger stand after all of the local hype. I've had some very good burgers in my rather limited experience, so I wanted to see how this would stack up. We went on a Friday night at around 6 and already quite the crowd had formed. Using a few recommendations, I ordered the Black and Bleu Burger, while my partner opted for the Fire Burger. We both went for truffle fries on the side, so both of our meals came to roughly 10 dollars each. The burgers, at first glance, are quite large, and both came with a generous serving of fries -- definitely no skimping on that end. I didn't know that you had to ask for different sauces for the fries, so we had to go back down and get some after the ketchup provided didn't quite do it for us. The sauces we were provided were quite good, and definitely accentuated the flavor of the fries. My burger was satisfying at first, but the heavy dose of blue cheese started to overpower it with a salty flavor after a few bites, leaving my stomach a bit confused. I'm almost always an adventurous eater, but the apple chutney didn't really complement the beef well, and I would probably never pair the two together in the first place. It also had a strange yellow color and texture that was a bit unappetizing on first glance. My partner's burger looked intriguing, but she wasn't quite satisfied due to the presence of too many peppers, and only ate about half of it. The fries were a good consistency but most of mine were fry stubs that were a bit difficult to dip in the tasty sauces. Again, the flavor of the fries didn't blow me away, as I was expecting. They were good fries, but nothing super delicious or addictive. I'm a tough critic when it comes to burgers, so I'd give the Burger Stand roughly 3 1/2 stars. For the price and the hype, I'd expect better, but if I go again I'll try a more traditional burger and see if there's a big difference.

Overpriced for what it is. The fries are good but the burgers are either just unimpressive or I make a fantastic burger at home. Also, picked red pepper do not make for a delicious burger topping.

Every time we visit Lawrence the first place we go to eat at is Burger Stand. Everything tastes so good here and it is so cool that you can choose all different kinds of delicious sauces (fancy sauce is the best!) to go with your fries and burgers. The black bean burger is also very good, and that is saying something about how delicious it really is because I'm not usually the type to like anything else besides a burger. Definitely going to be always be one of our first stops to eat while we are visiting Lawrence!

Yes, it's true...The Burger Stand gets my coveted 5 star rating! I actually drove 1 hour to try this place..yes, 1 hour, and it was well worth it. It was so hard making a choice, but I went with the Black and Blue Burger and a side of duck fat fries..OMG, can you say heaven. The burger was perfectly cooked, and seasoned. Just bite after bite of burger goodness. The fries were also good, and pretty unique. I did try the onion rings as well, and they were just OK...use your calories on the fries. I love the "sauce bar" on the lower level. I would have to say my favorite is marshmallow! This is definitely worth the trio if you are anywhere in the vicinity!

I had a late night burger here for dinner. The Burger Stand has a nice college atmosphere. The burgers were very good but not outstanding. I had the smoke burger with onion rings, baked beans, and potato salad. Prices are very affordable compared to burgers at other major cities in the USA.

Very good .... Ordered the FIre burger and it was delish.... Onion rings great too. Don't love the self serve aspect ... Order at the bar and your name is called over loud speaker to pick up food. Slightly annoying when siting in booth and people are literally standing 1 foot from your table waiting to order... Sooo I guess don't sit in the booths.

Burgers and fries are very good. So many options and combinations I've never seen before. Try the burnt marshmallow fry sauce. It's a multi-level restaurant/bar atmosphere and when they are busy it gets loud. Overall a fun and casual place to eat.

Great burgers and atmosphere. Ive got to admit when Burger Stand was at Dempsey's it was better. Kobe burger is still the best burger you can get anywhere in Kansas. I tried the corn dog here too when my friend got it and it was also scrumptious. Although not good enough for me to ever change my burger order.

My youngest starts at KU today, so you'll be seeing more reviews from Lawrence. A small set of cooked to order burgers with interesting toppings and a good beer selection what more could you want? How aboout fries cooked in duck fat and poutine. My son, who eats a very healthy diet, loved the duck fat fries.

I want to like the Burger Stand, I really do. But there is something about it that always leaves me disappointed. First off the food is decent, especially the sweet potato fries, and that is where the 3 stars come from. However, the service is terrible every single time. It is always hard to find an open table and it takes awhile to get your food. Second, the people working the register and behind the bar are always so stinkin rude. It doesnt matter how good your food is, you have to be nice and polite to your paying customers. On Mass there are plenty of awesome places to eat that will appreciate your business. On another note, they do have lots of interesting sauces so make sure to give em all a try!

Amazing burgers and you can get a booze milkshake and duckfat fries with it!!! Might be best in town. The sauce selection is crazy good. I could go nutz on the marshmallow one. Try it. You will love it. I give only four stars cuz its kinda crazy in there, and could use some organization. Dont be in a hurry, i waited over half an hour for an order, but damn...worth it!

This is the premier place to get a burger in Lawrence. As a matter of fact, it is one of the great restaurants in town, and that list has some impressive company. The location is in the heart of Massachusetts Street, the cradle of life in Northeast Kansas. The decor and mood of the restaurant mixes an old bar feel with cultured and hip appendages. The ordering process is one of the signature parts of the dining experience. Customers walk up to the bar, order, and give their name for the order. Some people give crazy names, like "overlord of the 5th dimension". This adds to the charm of the restaurant. The burgers are outstanding. The beef used is exceptional, like the Kobe beef on the Kobe Burger, which is some of the best in the world. The buns are very soft, yet can hold the burger together very well, and they are also very tasty. The fries are some of the best in Lawrence. Some of the options range from classic, truffle, sweet potato, duck fat, and the Canadian Poutine, with gravy and cheese curds. The sauce bar is the best part of the restaurant, with sauces that range from cocoa chipotle ketchup, and the marshmellow sauce. One of the best restaurants in Kansas, and the price is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is one of, if not my top burger place in the KC/Lawrence area. The menu is the perfect size, allowing them to do what they do well and not be overextended. The last time I was here we popped up on a nice day to watch a KU b-ball game, got a great seat at the bar and drank Free State beer while we waited. The selling point to this place is the sides, particularly the truffle fries with all of the various dipping sauces (go cajun). Perfect atmosphere and right downtown, a must try for the burger-junkies of the world.

Good spot for a burger, esp the cheap burgers late night. And good beer selection. The dipping sauces seem a bit watered down, but still tasty.

I'm really torn about the Burger Stand... I really want to like them, but I am almost always disappointed. I have never had a really good veggie burger there. I have tried almost all of them, and most of their veggie hot dogs too. They burgers are always too soft on the inside. No matter what the composition, it always seems like they are made of mashed potatoes. They once had a veggie dog made of sun dried tomatoes, which seemed like a good idea until I realized I was eating a log of sun dried tomatoes. They should be a garnish, not eaten in a big blob. Their quinoa dog was similarly disappointing, it was like a log of crispy quinoa on a bun. Grain on grain, not that interesting. I can't speak for any of the meat dishes, but perhaps they are better. The sides are better. The truffle fries, regular fries, onion rings and sweet potato fries are all great. The fried pickles are delicious (but not made in-house) but you cannot order a half order of them like with all the other sides. A whole order is really filling, so if you can't get someone to split them with you, it's going to be your whole meal. The sauces are great. I love the rojo ranch and the garlic aioli the best. The marshmallow dip is surprisingly good with the sweet potato fries. But I really like the ambiance of the Burger Stand. It's a good local joint, they have good drink specials, nice bartenders, and are sort of dingy without being dirty. I'll keep going back, if only for those reasons!

Rock solid burger place tucked into a massive bar. Come as you are (wear sweats to lunch, the college kids don't care), enjoy a well-prepared burger or hot dog and fries. The specials and combinations are well-thought out and delish. A variety of complimentary toppings make the fries a bit better than they actually are. Good veggie options as well. Sports on the TVs all weekend.

This is the place to be! Drink specials are great, and bartenders Dan and Paul are fabulous! Drinks are strong and food is delicious! Burgerstand has a wide variety of beers on tap. The food menu provides a wide variety, and the sauces are always something special.

Yummy!!!!!! My husband and I had lunch there and it was wonderful! Food, service, beer, all fantastic. If you like corn dogs, their homemade battered ones are worth it - get their chipotle ketchup or Guinness mustard to go with it! Onion rings are the best and my husbands burger was perfectly cooked and flavorful!

I'm really starting to think this place is over rated. I came back finally. I saw the catfish po boy and figured I'd try that. How often do I get catfish? That also neatly avoided the raw burger problem. It had its own problem though- way too much of the slaw that came as a topping. It was a little too tangy and way too messy. Remember the truffle fries? I sure did. That's the only reason I gave them 4 stars before despite the raw burger. They were that good. This time they weren't, in fact they were cold and stale. As much as I paid and waited (off hours and SLOW) they absolutely should have been cooked to order. No excuse for that. They ruined the best part! And my $5 shake was too small and too chugable. Cost? I've paid twice as much for a meal and half as much elsewhere and been happier in both cases. Granted, this is more like a bar with a kitchen than a true restaurant. Some of their cocktails sounded clever and appealing but I couldn't really drink at the time.

After several visits to The Burger Stand, I am still trying to warm up to this place, but it just does not seem to be happening for me . Full disclosure upfront, I'm vegan, and it is from that perspective that I will be writing this review. Let me begin with the positive points about this place. The Burger Stand offers several vegetarian/vegan burger options on their menu, and they offer the option of a vegan bun as well. This is very much appreciated, and it always nice to have another dining-out option in town. I would recommend either the Black Bean Burger, or, The Garbo (garbanzo bean patty), as both are pretty tasty. The Burger Stand also has a good selection of beers on tap, and it is a pretty good place to hang out and watch KU basketball. Now, for the problems. 1) The fries are not vegan, because they are fried in the same friers as the duck fat fries (this was confirmed by the counter staff). This actually would not be a serious issue, but when you pick up your burger at the counter and it takes up less than half of the small basket it is served in, and then you take into account the price, you feel a bit cheated (see point 3). 2) While I am very happy that they have a vegan hamburger bun option, on at least two occasions the buns have been pretty cold; so cold, that they seem to have just been pulled out of a deep freeze a minute before the burger was placed on them. This is pretty amateurish for a burger place. 3) Let's be honest, the burgers are overpriced, and they do not come with fries (I suppose this would bother me all the more if the fries were vegan, and I could actually eat them). For (just) a burger and a beer, it is $12.25 before tip. 4) The bar-tending staff could be a bit more friendly. When I do eat here, I make a point to not sit and eat at the bar anymore, because the bar staff's attitudes verged on rudeness. I only hit The Burger Stand now when I am tired of the handful of other vegan-friendly places in town, and I just lower my expectations a bit.

The falafel burger is to die for - with tasty tzatziki, pickled onions and a toasty bun, this is my favorite burger ($6.99). The quinoa dog is also very good with a firm texture and curried fruit compote on top ($3.99). The sweet potato fries have always been killer. With the option of salt or sugar toppings, they could almost be a dessert. Now with the addition of marshmallow dipping sauce added to their wide selection of house made ketchups, aiolis and remoulade dips, these amazing fries could truly transition to dessert. It is a bit pricey but for the gourmet burgers and top-quality ingredients, I'm willing to pay more. The ambiance is hip also with great natural wood tables and a cool bar. They have a good selection of beers on tap and great Free State pint nights on Monday. I would recommend the food here over Dempseys also. I think the quality and consistency is much better.

Would've felt better about this place had I got the regular fries rather than the cheese-bourbon-bacon fries. They put bourbon in with the melted cheese, which curdles the cheese, and doesn't taste as good as you'd think. My burger was good, but I was bummed out that the habanero relish wasn't spicy at all. It's inside a bar called the Casbah too fyi.

Best burgers I ever tried. I have been to Chicago, Vegas and New York and this one is still one of my top burger stands in the country. There Kobe burgers and there corn dogs are to die for. I told my friend from Hamburg Germany who came and visited to come with me and that we had the best burgers and he didn't believe me and was laughing at me. Saying Hamburgers started in Germany and that they have the best burgers in the world. Anyways not for long :)

This is, by far, one my favorite places to eat. Still maintaining a Lawrence, trendy, hipster/alternative atmosphere, I think this is one of the many places Lawrence has to offer that does the essentials well. Delicious food, great specials and community interaction (e.g. Chicken Tuesday + Tuesday basement nostalgia video game night). I've never had so many delicious sauces and their sweet potato fries are to die for. I always get the Barnyard Bash, which is intimidatingly large but makes for a good half-sandwich and leftovers, given that I couldn't go without getting Fried Pickles or Sweet Potato fries to go with it. Delicious healthy alternatives on the menu for those who are a little more conscious about what they eat!

Are you kidding me? Perfect meal. The duck fat fries made me so grateful for chubby ducks!

All I can say is yum. I have never had a bad burger in this wonderful restaurant and bar. The ingredients are top quality and very interesting. I really enjoy the Black and Blue (blue cheese and apples) and the Smoke (bacon and Gouda) burgers, and the salad that I had was good as well, but the true star of the show are the fries. They have the standard fries for the purists among the group, but they also have taste bud-exploding varieties such as duck fat (a hint of orange flavor makes these amazing) and truffle (so rich and nutty), but the pinnacle of their menu offerings has to be the sweet potato fries...so crispy, so delicious, I can't even put into words the delight...just try them. The bartenders also mix up some great beverages and have a good selection of beers as well

Burger Stand is the best burger I have ever had. Do yourself a favor, and get yourself a Smoke Burger or the Black N Blue, and some truffle fries. Or sweet potato fries, with their homemade marshmallow dip. And a Free State beer, or something seasonal. And the corn dogs, made with Nathan's hot dogs, dipped in their Guinness ground mustard. Sigh. You're in for a treat.

Next on my food hop night on my quest to understand Lawrence, The Burger Stand. The amount of choices is a little intimidating. Burger? Here's 7 choices. Fries? Another 7 choices. Condiments? Attack the various sauces we have. Would you like a beer with that? Yes. Amazing. I tried The Smoke Burger, which has applewood-smoked bacon, smoked gouda cheese and chipotle-cocoa ketchup with a side of Duck-Fat Fries. If that didn't sound amazing, I also ordered a basket of poutine. I think I effectively shortened my life a little bit, but it was worth it. How does Lawrence, KS has poutine and LA doesn't? What in the world?!

Don't get me wrong, I love this place but it's a little pricey. The sauces are also really good and the burgers are amazing !

Been here many many times. I don't care where you go on multiple occasions, there will always be a hiccup along the way. Burger Stand is no different. With that being said, the Burger Stand is fairly consistent. The burgers are usually right on point. Thick, juicy, and great flavor. What more do you want in a burger? There have been times when I felt the kitchen rushed the burgers, even though I waited over 30 minutes to get my meal. Sounds like a catch 22 huh? I figure if you're gonna wait more than 20 minutes for a burger, it should be damn near perfect. At the least, not undercooked! This has happened a couple times but it's not the norm. Back to the wait times........Man oh man! You better not be in any kind of a hurry at the Burger Stand. Those boys in the kitchen have been known to average 20-30 minutes getting a burger and fry out. Again, I don't really care about the wait times, as long as the Burger Stand keeps pumping out great food. My go to burger is anything to the Kobe variety. Well well done to the point of burning it. I'm dead serious. I need my burgers BURNT!! Laugh as you may. But I'd recommend trying a burnt burger and judging for yourself;) The condiments and topping are really good if..,and I mean "if" you can get enough toppings to actually taste them. I sometimes wonder if the Burger Stand looks at burger toppings as a garnish or part of the burger? I prefer more but again no biggie. The fries are extremely good as well. No complaints here, but I still prefer Dempsy's french fries slightly ahead of the Burger Stand based purely on crispness. I like the Burger Stands various dipping sauces too, but still give the slight nod to Dempsy's. The truffle fries at Burger Stand are delicious! The interior, vibe, decor, ambiance, etc is hands down superior to Dempsy's. Not even close. As crazy as this sounds, the Burger Stand is way cleaner than Dempsy's as this matters big time to many customers. Sitting at the bar in the Burger Stand is pretty cool to do sometimes. The booths are large and spacious. The back room by the kitchen has some counter high seating that I frequent. Can get hectic and noisy back there but I don't care. Also, sitting in the back you will without question smell like grilled burgers for a few hours afterwards. Another thing, I wouldn't recommend sitting in the back with small children or the faint of heart. The kitchen staff can't get rowdy and stressed out during the big rushes. This often results in some rather interesting language being thrown about. So, just know that is an area that is a little rougher than the rest of the restaurant. I can't remember, but I swear I saw seating downstairs and upstairs in the Burger Stand. Not 100% sure. O.K, here is my #1 complaint with the Burger Stand; Why in the world do they allow live bands to play upstairs on a balcony like overlook? I understand the concept. But for heavens sake, it is so freaking loud I literally had to shout to say two words. I gave up and didn't even speak for the rest of the visit. You think I'm exaggerating but I swear it's too much. Even for Lawrence standards. The thing is, the music/band sounded terrible on the few times I've been in there with live music. The beating of the drums is so overwhelming you can't even hear the vocals of the singer. Basically, imagine a young teenage boy or girl sitting in your basement and slamming on a set of drums. The sound reverberates throughout the place and just sounds horrible. My advise would be to abandon the live bands and play HD music through the restaurants sound system. Hell, I don't think customers would mind it much if you blasted the music at that point. At least we could enjoy the true art of music and not have to torture ourselves with the live stuff. The Burger Stand is a must visit for those seeking out a decent burger outside the fast food realm of choices in Lawrence, Kansas.

Best place to get burgers in Lawrence! So many unique options, plus they offer a good vegetarian menu and some gluten-free as well. There is a sauce and aioli bar on the first floor. Each sauce pairs well with everything on the menu and you can try as many as you want!

I am a huge fan of a good burger and there are not many better places in Lawrence. They are always so nice when ordering and even the cooks say thanks when you go to pick up your food. My burger is always cooked properly and is very tasty and a very good size. The sides are huge and for the price you will leave full. They also have an array of dipping sauces which are freshly made. I am also a huge fan of different sauces so this appeals to me more than anyone. I suggest anyone who loves a good burger to try out one of the best burgers in town.

The Burger Stand makes one damned tasty burger. I first had the Burger Stand burgers when they were over in Dempsey's Pub. Great stuff over there, but I think that their move into the Casbah space has really let them bloom and develop into their own. The burgers at the Burger Stand are always big, juicy, and delicious. My personal favorite is the Fire burger, which comes with fresh avocado & habanero-cactus jam! The standard treatment is for the burger to be cooked to medium. There's some undefinable quantity of their burger that just makes you attack it, a hot juicy mass in your hand that you cannot put down. And then there are the fries. Like many places that have sprung up in the Hamburger Renaissance(TM), the Burger Stand also makes some damned good fries. Sweet potato fries, fries with truffle oil, fries cooked in duck fat... and the dipping sauces: house-made ketchup, garlic aioli, and a half-dozen other selections. The move to the new locale has also given them some new space to work with. The space at the Casbah includes a substantial number of booths on the main floor and the upstairs area, but there is also a separate bar area downstairs that is opened on weekends and can be rented for special events. Sometimes it takes every fiber of my being to resist just hopping the car for the short jaunt down to the Burger Stand to have a burger, but then sometimes... you just have to have that burger.

I love the burgers (especially the Smoke) and the Fries (truffle), but when I had lunch today, the oil must have been ancient. The truffle fries were not good. Please keep on top and change your oil!

The Burger Stand is amazing. The duck fat fries are on point, better than the infamous truffle fries. The burgers are cooked to order. All of the in house (homemade) sauces are great. Only cons would be the lack of customization. They boast the broadest selection of craft brews on Mass street as well. I have been to the burger stand five times and each time I ordered a different burger, I haven't been disappointed thus far. Only one sub par experience. The joint was really busy. I ordered my burger medium but I received it well done along with the two other people I was dining with. Still, this could be due to new cooks/inexperienced ones, the overall busy-ness of the day, and etc. Regardless, the burger was still tasty and I wasn't going to be that dick to complain about it. Now if it would have been a 30 dollar steak, things would have been different. But working in the food business, I know what it's like when you're super busy and you're doing your best and make a mistake. On top of that, having to remake something just compounds more stress into the equation. Overall, this is my favorite burger place in Lawrence. However, I still have quite a few to tackle. Burger Stand burgers (greater than sign) BurgerFi/Five Guys/Freddy's/23rd Street/Johnny's Tavern burgers.

I get the black and blue, medium well. The staff is always friendly and make delicious food. My only complaint is the time it takes, but 10-15 minutes for the best burger in town is worth it.

This is definitely one of the absolute best places to get a burger in Lawrence. They use quality product and make the burgers to order. The home made sauces are the frosting on the cake.

I liked it! Went with the black & bleu burger. Also sampled beer-batter onion rings and duck fat fries. Both sides were excellent. Next time, I'd like to try the jerk salmon burger - I didn't see that on the menu, before I ordered. Good burgers. Messy. Definitely casual.

If they had a less stupid and annoying ordering and pick up system, I might give five stars. The food is really good, they can actually cook a burger medium rare, and the vegetarian options are great. Plus, they try to offer poutine. Not the best, but still ... points for poutine.

Awesome! We absolutely love to pop in to the burger stand as a reward, for consolation, or simply when craving a good carb load. When the "A Team" is cooking, this place should get 6 stars, but any other time, five stars will do ;). The burgers are fat, juicy (not greasy), flavorful, and truly cooked-to-order, their chicken is fantastic, and the truffle fries...oh man... words cannot describe the blissful deliciousness of those truffle fries. I've been dining here regularly for at least three years, and the food has improved in that period (such a rare quality in a restaurant). The Burger Stand has consistently delivered high-quality, tasty food, and the single time I was dissatisfied with the food (2years ago), the staff went well out of their way to rectify their error. Speaking of the staff...I have never encountered a grumpy, rude, or unaccomadating bartender, cashier, busser or cook here.

The Burger Stand came recommended from everyone I spoke to about Lawrence and the praise of my friends and family were not misplaced. The burgers are flavorful and creative and the fries are to die for. All of the different sauces for the burgers and fries are really tasty and my only regret was not getting enough fries to try them all. My only complaint was the time it took to get our food on a summer weeknight. I can only imagine how long it will take to get food during the school year. However, I will join my friends and family in recommending the Burger Stand to whomever asks.

Had smoke burger and duck fat fries to go. Was awesome! Fat burger and succulent fries filled me up for sure. The pickles there were unique. They had a sour taste that made me pucker but I could not stop eating them. Just had to eat one bite burger and one bite pickle. All the homemade sauces were great yo.

Each time I've been I've tried a different item on the menu and was pleasantly surprised!!! I loved the poutine fries!!!! Wow...and you have GOT to try all the different sauces, especially the sweet potato fries with the marshmallow sauce- yummo...live a little and go outside your box :-) All I have to say is this place is delish and I Will be back!!

I was told this was THE place to get a burger at in Lawrence by a friend, and I hate to say that I was seriously disappointed. Around 2pm on a Wednesday, my friend and I walked into the Casbah. We had never been before, but the staff stared blankly at us until we figured out how they do things there. The menu looked delicious, so I ordered a poblano pepper - mushroom burger and duck fat fries. My friend ordered the standard burger. We got our sauces from the sauce bar (a nifty idea, if poorly executed) and seated ourselves. Perhaps this is catty, but why am I supposed to tip when I order, serve, and seat myself? The food was ready very quickly, which was refreshing. The fries were soggy with grease, obviously the fryer hadn't been up to temperature before they were prepared. I would have sent them back, but there was no one to wait on us or ask how our food was. My mushroom burger was bland, not an ounce of spice or seasonings. As a veggie-burger fan, this was really disappointing as a good mushroom burger can be delicious and satisfying. My friend's burger was cooked nicely (medium rare) but was also bland and tasted of unseasoned meat. Her fries (duck fat) were also soggy and greasy. We ate as much as we could stomach and headed back to Kansas City, wishing we would have gone to Free State Brewery for lunch instead. Overall: The food was bland, greasy, and the sauces were watery and lacking in flavor. The service was okay, not helpful but not rude. Next time, I'll go to Free State or Aladdin's.

I love the on tap beer. Any fry or burger you order is amazing. I personally favor the smoke and duck fat fries. The atmosphere is great, nice beer pub. I would recommend ordering your burger well done. I usually like pink on the inside for a medium; however, when I did order a medium burger it was more like rare - red cold meat on the inside. I now order my burgers well done and their fine. Sometimes the fries come dowsed in oil too, so beware. The different ketchups are always fun too. I also appreciate they have regular ketchup now in squeeze bottles on the tables. The price is a touch high, but only because I'd like to eat there more often. =)

It may have taken a 25 minute wait to get my food but these burgers are amazing! Had the Kobe Burger (med rare) and a Barnyard Bash with 1 order Cajun Fries, 1 order of Duck Fat Fries and a Stawberry Shake (I wanted chocolate but they were out) Everything was super delectable and they have a bevy of homemade sauces for condiments (though a lot seem to be mayo based) that were very tasty.

My god! This is great. The best burger in town no doubt about it. They're special sauces are great (avocado ranch is the best). Try the truffle fries. They are delicious! I will miss this place a lot after I graduate :(

Five Words: FRIES cooked in duck fat!!!! uh... YUM! Not a decent burger; a great burger, faboo onion rings (with a real beer tang in the beer batter), scrumptious fried pickles and awesome brats! A more than decent beer selection and a smattering of unaffected but cute coeds and geeky boy toys make this an eye candy, tummy loving belly filling fun fun college town spot!

By far my favorite place to eat in Lawrence. KILLER VEGETARIAN OPTIONS. I've never been disappointed by a meal here. Sometimes, I get anxiety at restaurants with too many great vegetarian options because I don't want to make the wrong decision, but SPOILER ALERT you can't order incorrectly when every item is delicious. Get an order of the truffle fries to share!

I'm a burger snob, and back in Cali, we have an abundance of mom and pop burger shops. I really wasn't expecting to find a great place The Burger Stand in Kansas. A place that has me simultaneously trying to lick duck fat off my fingers and write a review. Thats right, DUCK FAT. The duck fat fries, are a must... a crispy, fatty, buttery bite of heaven! Not into animal artery clogging goodness? The sweet potato fries are tossed in some magical combination of cinnamon, sugar, and spices. Pair it with the marshmallow dip at the self serve sauce bar and its more like a delicious dessert instead of a side of fries. Then the burgers... My friend had a special burger, the crab apple. Crab salad on a burger with a peppery sweet apple relish. That is a combination clearly dreamed up by a burger mastermind. I ordered from the main menu and had the smoke burger, which was bacon, gouda, saucy goodness. Although everything is decadent and gourmet, its balanced. There is someone in that kitchen, behind that menu that gets food and how to pair things in a new and delicious way. The ingredients are fresh, the portions large, and I bet you wont ever have this wonderful a burger experience again!

headed into Lawrence last week to pick up a concert ticket with my husband and toddler. after walking around on the beautiful day, we decided to come here for lunch. when we walked in the door, the long line and open seating, we were little concerned about finding a kid-friendly table but one conveniently opened up as we were approaching the counter. we weren't in a burger mood so we ordered beer brats and poutine and a grilled cheese for my son. everything was fantastic and my son's grilled cheese even looked amazing (and I'm not normally a grilled cheese fan) the only negative was the time we waited for our order. when I saw large groups of people who were in line behind us getting our food before us I went up to check. a few minutes later, our order was ready and it was well worth the wait. I can't wait to go back and try a burger and truffle fries!
