Passing through Lawrence with family, stopped here for an early-evening bite. Service was friendly, chips were hot and crisp (but the salsa, like almost every Mexican restaurant in Kansas, must be augmented with Tabasco or a like substance.) I ordered the Spicy Burrito Con Carne, that comes with a helpful little chili pepper next to the description to indicate that the item is allegedly spicy...and it was one of the blandest things I have ever eaten. There was nothing spicy IN the burrito, the chili verde on top might as well been green chicken gravy. I've had spicy burritos at places before, I know it's possible to get spice in a Mexican entree, just not here, evidently. The rice was good and fluffy. Overall, it's an acceptable place to eat, I'd probably have to try another item or two before I could make a sweeping generalization about the overall quality of the restaurant. But I haven't been in Lawrence for 25 years, so who knows when I'll be back again.

Ugh. Server was pleasant and attentive. Other than that, this place has nothing going for it. No one greeted us at the maze like entrance, we had to wander in and announce our presence. Ordered the taco lunch plate. Ground beef tacos were very, very greasy and tasteless. The mexican rice was gummy and overcooked with no real flavor. Queso dip was ok but ridiculously priced at almost $5 for a bowl so small the chips won't even fit into it to apply the dip without breaking them first. Pretty much every Mexican place you can visit would be better.

Still one of my favorite Mexican spots in Lawrence. Food is always great and service is amazing.

I give Salty Iguana 3-stars not solely based on their food. If I were rating the food by itself, I would give 4-stars. The service I've received at the restaurant has been mediocre. I've been to eat there with my family (which includes 2-kids under 8yrs old). I've been there for lunch with a girlfriend. I've been there with other adults just to pig out on Iguana Dip and drink margarita's. Examples: On my recent trip to Salty Iguana with my family, I saw our server tending to 10 tables. The server was so inattentive to all of them - empty drink glasses pushed to the end of the table, people sitting for a long time before they ordered. On a trip with my girlfriend at lunch time, our server was nowhere to be seen for 10 minutes after bringing our drinks. At the lunch hour... who has time to wait 10 minutes to order food? The best thing about the place: You have to order some iguana dip to go with your free chips and salsa! White cheese dip with spinach. Yum.

We made reservations for 15 people 4 days in advance and ended up having to wait 45 minutes to be seated, which completely defeated the purpose of making a reservation. The staff was not friendly at all and treated us like we were a burden, even though they knew we were already unhappy about having to wait 45 minutes for our "reserved" table. The food was edible but nothing special in the least and was very bland tasting. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. The best thing about Salty Iguana was the paintings on the wall, which is pretty sad to say about a restaurant.

Hit the Iguana last week to quench my chips and salsa craving and do some studying. While not the most conducive place for studying I knocked out a couple page paper with minimal distractions, so it served that purpose. As for the food, it was okay. Nothing spectacular, but nothing bad either. I followed up some chips and salsa with some chicken fajitas-big portions I will say and I took a to-go box as well. All in all ok, I have not had much Mexican in Lawrence, and I will go back, but I wouldn't write home about it! Salty Iguana gets a 2.5, which I've upgraded to a 3 cause I am a nice guy.

Food and drinks are usually decent. Service is kind of so so at times.

The service here is always quick. The chips and salsa are alright, nothing excellent. The food here is a good for Tex-Mex, nothing authentic.

The enchiladas are so-so, didn't have any flavor, but you will be full. I've been here twice and have not been disappointed with the service. They're also great at accommodating large parties. Overall, a good place for casual dining.

The food here tastes like they don't care. And the staff clearly doesn't, so it's very fitting. This is Mexican food; well about as much as Taco Bell. The cheese is cheap. Hell, all the ingredients are cheap. It seems like they decided to buy the lowest quality government cheese, meat and tortillas, cooked everything up but said "NO SPICES, THAT COSTS MONEY. We simply cannot put things like CHILI powder, jalapeños and cilantro on things. How do you expect is to make a PROFIT?!" But they turn around spend what seems like a small ransom on having someone paint gaudy iguanas on the wall. (Salty Iguana, do you get it? DO YOU?!?!) Somehow they've paid Bill Self enough money to pimp this on the radio as some great food. That tells me his taste in food is either really horrible or he really REALLY loves money more than his integrity. Either way, go to El Potro if you like your food to not taste like it came out of a dog food can. On second thought, some of the canned food I give my dog smells better.

It's been a couple of years since I had been to a salty iguana and had never tried the Lawrence location. Wow, I don't remember the other locations ever being this bad so I'm guessing the Lawrence location is just really dropping the ball. Salsa tasted like nothing more than tomato sauce. No discernible spices or vegetables could be found. We were also dumb enough to order a small bowl of $5 iguana dip which was just chunky queso blanco with maybe a hint of spinach or some other tiny green substance. There was nothing "smooth & creamy" about the dip as the menu suggested. I ordered the spicy burrito con carne and whomever wrote their menu was really good because the description sounded great but in reality it was just a sloppily thrown together burrito with chunks of dried pork and some chicken but mostly full of refried beans and then smothered in cheese to try and give it some kind of flavor. It was supposed to have a verde sauce as well but the kitchen must not speak spanish because I couldn't find any. My gf had the cream cheese enchiladas because she's a fan of a similar dish at Mi Ranchito. Unfortunately there was no comparison to Mi Ranchito's version. The only cream cheese on the dish was just a glob of unappetizing looking cream cheese spread on top of the enchiladas. My gf is not as critical as I am but she couldn't even muster up anything positive to say about them and when I hesitantly accepted her offer to try a bite, I was shocked that Mexican food could be done this badly. And all of this for $30! As another reviewer perfectly put it, "The food here tastes like they don't care". They really don't care and neither should you. Please, do yourself a favor, the next time you are in the mood for Mexican food in Lawrence just google Mexican restaurants and you'll find plenty of choices that couldn't possibly be as bad as this place.

I have no idea why this is a Lawrence favorite. I have given it three opportunities and each time I have been very disappointed. Generic Mexican food that tastes like they use Velveeta in everything. Margaritas are ok but nothing to brag about. Poor atmosphere.

One of our favorite mexican places in town. They have delicious white cheese queso and the enchiladas were fantastic. The margaritas are very good as well. We will be back again.

Did not live up to the hype. I got the tacos azul, which apparently they are famous for, and they tasted like mediocre tacos. Nothing there was that great. Cheap margaritas though.

This is an old standby in Lawrence. I know we'll never have to wait for a seat, the beer is cheap, the service is fast, and the food is fattening and cheesy. The prairie village burrito is a nice option. It has pork and beef in it with black beans and then covered with cheese. The spinach enchiladas are also perfect before a night of drinking. And who can pass up $2 miller lite? It's most surely not the best food and I can't safely or sanely call it 'Mexican' food, but it holds a nostalgia for me that keeps me coming back.

I came here several years ago and was disappointed. Glad to see things don't change. We came as a work group, around 12:00pm mid-week. The place was quiet and they set us up quickly. The staff was friendly and efficient, so I give them an extra star for that. However, the food is not very good. I had the spicy burrito (lunch sized) and it was certainly not spicy in the slightest, and was lacking on the filing. It came with tons of rice, and almost no beans. The flavor was...meh. Not a lot of it, so I can't say it was too bad. I expected a lot more for the price. As for the chips and salsa - the chips were a bit bland but okay...the sale, however, just tasted like tomato sauce. No joke...tomato sauce. I'm not a huge salsa fan, but this was bad. Everyone at the table seemed to share that sentiment. It got the job done, but nobody was all that thrilled.

I'm surprised this doesn't get rated higher, but for me this is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Lawrence. Get the Iguana Dip, it's a delicious cheese dip that's big on flavor (but not spice.) Their pork is marinated and delicious - and that IS spicy! Try a Taco Salad with Beef (my favorite) or a quesadilla. They're great with gluten allergies and they're always friendly. The place can get pretty busy with KU alums, but it's a fun and jovial atmosphere that's also great for kids. The cream cheese enchiladas with pork are fantastic!

We were seated with in a couple of minutes, however as a party of five we were placed in a booth meant for 4 making us a bit cramped. The hostess and server were very polite though at times a little behind. Our food came out separately instead of at the same time, we were told this was due to new kitchen staff not keeping table numbers together. The food was not bad but very bland. I'm from Southern California so I know what Mexican should taste like and that wasn't it. I suspect that this establishment is much more of a sports bar first and then a Restarunt. If I want drinks and an appetizer while watching the game I may be back but I will be looking elsewhere for Mexican food in town.

This place is pretty good for mexican food. Came here the other day and had a good meal. They had plenty of options on the menu to choose from and everything I tried was pretty good. The service was pretty good and the place was decently clean which was nice. Could have been a little better, but it could have been an off night as well. Overall I had a pretty good experience though.

Service was great; they kept the chips and drinks refilled. I also really loved the murals on the wall with the lizards in all the scenes. You could stare at them for days. I was disappointed in the salsa, it was too much like marinara/tomato sauce -- very runny and not much spice. For dinner I had Iggy's Hot Pot, which was kind of like a small cauldron of a gumbo-like mix of meats that you could either spoon or put on tortillas with the accompaniment of rice, lettuce, and tomatoes. It had good spice, but was kind of messy. I'd try something different next time.

The Salty Iguana is about what you'd expect it to be: Americanized Mexican-ish fare made with ingredients that are of not-so-great quality. None of the food is particularly flavorful and I don't think they understand the value of cumin, cilantro or chili powder. We managed to arrive here on Mother's Day after finding that Cibo Sano was closed for Mother's Day. There was a torrential downpour outside, so getting somewhere dry with food was the priority. So take that for what it is. This is just not my kind of place, so if it's yours, you'll probably get what you expect and be happy for it. What made this a 2-star experience rather than a 1-star experience was the service. Our server was incredibly pleasant and helpful, even printing off nutrition information for a parent who needed a relatively low sodium meal (note: nearly everything except for two menu items is packed with more sodium than anyone should consume in a day). Food arrived fairly quickly after ordering as well. And a really nice touch...at the end of the meal, they gave my mother and me $10 gift cards for more food. I just wish I liked their food better.

The food is just bland. It's just okay for Americanized tex-mex, but the flavors and quality of ingredients are really lacking. The chips we got were a little stale, the salsa is more reminiscent of a watery, tasteless tomato paste. I got the avocado burrito, and the avocado was good, but scarce and the meat was tender, but nearly flavorless. It was served with "mexican rice" that is just rice with some added tomato paste and nothing else and some canned black beans warmed up with a little bit of cheese melted on top. The iguana dip is good, some basic white queso with spinach, but tastes the same as you could get anywhere else. I remember this place being much better just a few years ago, but I certainly won't be going back. If you want true Mexican, head to El Mezcal, where they use quality ingredients and properly season their dishes!

I like the environment but the food is a bit lacking. Its one of those restaurants that you will continue to go to periodically because it's convenient.

Yelp's rating system says it perfectly: Meh. I've experienced better. This is definitely true for Salty Iguana. I've never had anything "bad" here, it's just never been awesome. Their iguana dip is good, but pretty standard white queso dip that you can get cheaper somewhere else. We visited Tuesday and chimichangas were on special. Everything on my plate was lukewarm, bordering cold. Considering the chimichanga comes out of a deep fryer, that sucker should be STEAMING when I cut into it. There wasn't even any steam escaping when I cut into it. It did taste good, but lukewarm food isn't awesome. My beans and rice were also cold. I don't know if it sat in the window too long or what. Our table had 2 chimis and 2 kids burritos, so everything should have been done about the same time. Go to El Mezcal for infinitely better Mexican food.

I had dinner here with my family recently. I think my sister goes here frequently, but on our way over I was wondering why I couldn't remember the last time (or any time) I ate at Salty. The second we sat down and got our chips/salsa, I realized why. There's nothing super bad about this place (the service was decent and the inside was clean, from what I could tell). The food wasn't awful, but it just wasn't good. To be fair, my dad loved his entree, but he ordered off a separate menu (the server said they started offering it recently and it's been pretty successful). I think he ordered shrimp tacos. I'm not a shrimp fan, but his entree came with an avocado, tomato, feta salad (it looked really good, and he loved the whole thing). I think the rest of my family was unimpressed. The salsa was the worst aspect of the meal. Salsa at Mexican restaurants is a huge deal to me, so bad salsa is a dealbreaker. It needed something....anything, garlic, cilantro, spices. It tasted like canned tomato sauce. My taco and quesadilla were ok, nothing special, but the rice and black beans were overcooked. I do like how they use blue corn tacos. I prob. won't come back. There are too many other good Mexican restaurants in town, and I'm only here for the summer!

The food here is very bland. There's no need for us to go back here when we could get better tasting Mexican food elsewhere. The servers are very nice, however I would suggest el mez for an overall yummier experience.

the place was good. we had a really good waiter who stayed on top of my salsa needs. i would devour a bowl of salsa, steal boyfriend's, and the waiter would bring boyfriend another bowl. eventually he caught on to what i was doing and asked if i kept stealing boyfriend's salsa. in my defense i wasn't really stealing it, i was just using mine up faster than he was, and was trying to get my 5 servings of vegetables a day. both of us had very good meal. boyfriend's burrito was good, and he made sure to point out that the refried beans weren't mushy like he usually winds up with. my quesadilla was good too, but i've never had a bad one (its kinda hard to mess something that simple up) but what i really like was that i ordered a lunch menu item, and it was a good amount of food for lunch, enough to fill me up, but not too much that i wasn't hungry at dinner. also i liked all the different murals all over the walls, especially the one that kinda told the story of how the restaurant came to be, but i'm the daughter and girlfriend of construction workers, so i'm usually amused by things like this

the lawrence location is a lot better than the prairie village location. the margaritas are cheap but tasty....and they have GREAT chips and salsa. i usually go for the white iguana cheese dip and spinach enchiladas. cheap but delicious. the location in prairie village is underwhelming; but lawrence location is a cool spot for a casual dinner and drinks before going to the clubs

  • Chas F.

Meh, that's the best word to describe their food. I've had way worse but I've had much better. They just have the standard tacos, enchilada, nachos etc. Nothing stood out, the best things I can say were the salsa, cheese dip and guacamole were good. But as I've said before it's tough to mess those up. Don't think I'll ever venture back here again but maybe instead of taco bell or taco johns I would.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
