Excellent place to snack! Great service and delicious donuts. I've never tried any of their cakes but their cookies are pretty tasty. I only gave them 4 stars because they don't take credit cards. Who in 2015 doesn't take a credit card? Even the snow cone place down the street takes them. Anyways, it's still a great place to go for a sweet treat...especially if you're looking for something at midnight on a Saturday night.

I don't understand the point of being open 24/7 when donuts are only well-stocked for about 1 hour in the day. And although I recently visited around 2AM (not expecting great service nor fresh donuts), I will not tolerate the older guy behind the counter ignoring me for 20 minutes and then having the audacity to be rude. Really? He is driving money away from the store.

Love this place. Cream cheese donuts are awesome. Only complaint is they don't take credit cards. I understand you don't want to pay the fee but let's join the 21st century.

24 hour open doughnut place in lawrence?!?! That deserves a 3 star just by itself. The cinnamon rolls were awesome. But it's cash only. It's not the best location in town either.

Who doesn't love a 24 hour bakery?! Most people rant and rave over the cream cheese donuts, however, not being a big cream cheese donut fan, I tend to go for the mini cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, or strawberry knots. Everything there is a home run!

Open 24/7 and have the best cream cheese donuts I've ever tasted. At a place like this ambiance and frills don't matter, ridiculously delicious donuts do. They delivered. It was well worth the drive from KC.

This place is OG, last of a dying breed, the working mans bakery, a place Archie Bunker would frequent. If you want something with gourmet coffee, a boulangerie per say, do a 180 and walk your ass out. If your a child of the 1970's this will resonate. I love the stamped cake donuts and disco cup cakes. This is a place where you chase all that dough with milk, oj, or watery coffee. No frills, and worth the meager prices they ask, best appreciated at 4 am or any other random hour. Enjoy it while it still exists! Hey was that Barney Miller that just walked out with a bakers dozen????

24/7 donuts? Heck YES. The fresh glazed donuts are delicious, especially at four in the morning when you are pulling an all-nighter. The coffee is nothing special, but the donuts are worth every penny!

I give munchers a 3 starts because all of the good times we've hand but I've been seeing its darker side lately. A couple months ago I decided to treat my siblings to this wonderful place only to end up not getting anything upon seeing a cockroach in the display! The cashier seemed unfazed while we were clearly disturbed to find this. Recently I've been steering away from munchers partly because of construction but mostly because the past two time I've gone there has been a lack of donuts. For a 24/7 donut place I dont expect everything to be fully stocked all the time but at least have some type of donut or cinnamon roll around 7pm, which isn't such an odd hour. On the bright side their coffee is surprisingly good despite being 75¢ coffee. Its not burnt, its not fancy, just right. And their cream filled stuff is pretty decent too, even though I find most of what they have to be to bland for me. I would usually get an eclair and a pudding ball. And this place never closes, even in a snow storm haha! My first year of college I'd frequent this place once a week at 2am. And they still had a wide variety of thing to pick, or at least most nights. I don't know what has changed but I do hope they took care of whatever roach problem they were having.

This little hole in the wall is a town favorite. Frequented by some people who have lived in Lawrence longer than I have been alive, Munchers Bakery is the best place to find hot and fresh homemade sweets. The bakery is open 24 hrs a day, so it's a great place to find a quite spot to study that isnt the traditional library. If you really want a treat, swing by around 4:00 AM, when they start selling the fresh baked goods. Wednesday after 1:30 is the time to stay away from the place though, as all of the middle school students crowd the place after being released from school early. Try the cinnamon rolls, or cream cheese doughnuts. I died. oh, and strawberry knots.

Yelp friends, time I revealed my true age. I've been coming to Muncher's since... wait for it... wait for it...1983. It was open way before that. And here's the great thing about it: whatever you've fallen in love with here, it's frozen in time. Like their famous cream cheese filled doughnuts (that aren't doughnuts and don't taste like cream cheese?) -- guess what, they taste just like they did 25 years ago and they're in the same case, in the same place. Only the help has changed, but damnit haven't they nailed the same recipe over and over with nary the slightest change. So, hell yes, this joint is a five. It's a dive, it's a hole in the wall, it's HOME... I know plenty of people that have been gone 20 years or longer since leaving KU, they come back and stop here and they're in tears. Nothing has changed. Everything's still great. Sorry, we didn't build a freaking monster hotel over the top of your old favorite bar. The doughtnuts... get them hot out of the fryer. The orange cinnamon rolls, the elephant ears. Damn, good stuff. Chocolate milk? Why yes, I'd love one. Coffee? Please, in a cheap Styrofoam cup. If I'm headed to KCI for an early morning flight and I have time, this is a must stop. A bit of Lawrence history in my stomach before leaving the state. What could be better? Tell me somewhere that's been open longer with this kind of consistency? I *love* this place. Oh, did I mention? Open 24 hours a day. Getting a bag of goodness on those holiday days when nothing else is open: priceless.

Sounds like most reviews are pretty consistent with Munchers. KU's late night & early riser (that's me) student's desperately need another option besides Java Break and Anshutz Library (Su-Th only). Whoever figures this out will be basking in glory and cash. Can someone.......anyone in Lawrence come up with a business plan that feasibly makes sense to cater the overnight crowds? Lawrence is awash with drunks, public safety officers, health care workers, the common working man, and students that would greatly patronize a business such as Munchers that offered a clean inviting environment with food and drink to boot. Throw in some free WiFi along with an updated casual interior and you have a money maker GUARANTEED!@#Q! Java Break had/has this opportunity but insist on squandering it away. The pastries at Munchers aren't Lamar donut/Dunkin donut quality. But, they could be awfully close. Having tasted their fresh from the oven/fryer goods tells me that Munchers is on to something here. Yea, the late night offerings are a bit stale and dry. What do you expect? They been sitting around for hours because the demand doesn't require they make anything fresh throughout the day. You best believe that if Munchers did a 180 and changed some things about their business, their numbers would take off. Again, their product isn't terrible by any means. Big question here: How can a donut/pastry shop not brew fresh coffee throughout the day? I mean seriously, every time I go in Munchers the coffee carafe's are empty and clouded over as if they haven't been washed in days. When they do have coffee, it's warm and mediocre at best. Not demanding specialty quality coffee or top notch Barista's. But there is no excuse not to provide a decent grade of fresh hot coffee for the customers. The furniture in Munchers makes my grandmothers house look contemporary. Are you freakin serious? Take out the dated furniture and throw a fresh coat of paint on the walls and you're in business. Robert Irvin from Restaurant Impossible would have a field day with Munchers. Oh yea, throw in some modern light fixtures and update the 20+ year old light bulbs. Sweep the floor and clean the glass cases. Last but not least.......install a credit card processor and stop worrying about merchant fee's and get with the times Munchers! Anyone know who owns Munchers? This is one of the most ridiculous set-ups I've ever run across. Gawd, this place has so much potential.

I give the desert and establishment 5 stars as I have been coming here for years. But that chubby employee boy they have with piercings just made me feel so uncomfortable. He was so unhelpful and unpleasant. That I am scared to ever go back there again. I feel bad for the people infront of me as they ordered lots of stuff and the cashier was so rude. Sorry munchers I Love you and it was nice knowing you.

Best Donuts in Lawrence. Whenever I have visiting family or friends with a sweet tooth we visit Munchers! The cream cheese donuts are fantastic as are the glazed. You really can't go wrong for a donut joint.

  • Drew C.

No, the interior isn't much to look at, but does it need to be? If you're at Muncher's, it's probably 3 am anyway. Shut up, order some cream cheese donuts, and reflect on the fact that 99.99 percent of the world will never know the joy that is Muncher's Bakery. You're one of the lucky ones.

    (4)
  • Clarice W.

My review is biased because I'm hopelessly in love with their cream cheese donuts, but nothing else. The interior is kind of dim and grungy, which matches the mediocre caliber of their items. The cinnamon buns are dry. The cookies are overly buttery. The apple fritters taste a lot like the ones that you get at a grocery store (and I would expect more from a bakery); same with the plain glazed/twisted donuts. Other items look (and taste) stale - so be careful what you choose! The cream cheese donuts, on the other hand, are near perfection - crispy edges with a soft, chewy interior, topped with just enough glaze to balance the creaminess with a touch of sweetness - they are to die for. Even better - they're open 24 hours so I can satisfy my cravings whenever I want (though they are cash only and selection varies depending on the time of day).

Highly recommend the cream cheese donuts, the butterfly, and my wife loves the strawberry knots. Great little shop that always has great product.

I've been to muncher's a couple times now and have never really had a great time. Seems like everytime I go is 2-4 am, so maybe Im a bit biased cause they never have fresh food. Then again, if you are a 24 hr. resturant you should have good food 24 hrs. or just close at midnight. McDonald's is 24 hrs and they never run out of anything. Muncher's will not have any of the good doughnuts available past 12 midnight. For some reason they have never had a long john or a chocolate sprinkled doughnut even when I went there at 5 pm. To make things worse, this place doesnt take credit cards. What is this, 1960? I cant imagine how much business they have lost cause the customer didnt have cash on them. If you want a place in Lawrence to eat at night, there are many other options. Java break, pizza shuttle, tbell, and pita pit are just some of them. If you are looking for a good doughnut, stick with Dunkin.

Love this place. The cream cheese doughnuts, apple fritters, and chocolate croissants are the best!

    (5)
  • Jessica H.

The place to get you sweet, sugary confections for the morning. Cream Cheese donut is the best. Other fav's are chocolate croissant, strawberry knot, blueberry fritter and their minni cinni's and minni orange rolls are awesome! I don't care about the dated shopping center or interior, their stuff is great and every morning they have their regulars congregated drinking coffee and eating donuts, reminds me of my grandparents small town bakery.

A Lawrence institution. All i need is a cream cheese donut and a cream cheese danish with a pudding ball as a chaser. I just wish they took credit cards Id spend waaaayyy more money there.

When I lived in Lawrence, this was my favorite place to hit up after a night out with friends. We would pool our change and laugh at the evening's events over yummy apple fritters or something just as sugary. It's super-cheap, it's open 24 hours, it's got a great name...what could be better?

Muncher's Bakery is a hard review for me to write, because I so badly want to love it, but I fear that under honest scrutiny it just might not hold up. I find myself returning, time and again, yet I know that there are so many things to potentially not like about his place. So what's to like? Cream cheese donuts. The cream cheese donuts are wickedly delicious and rather large -- a single donut is enough to satisfy. And, they're open 24 hours a day, so the promise of a hefty, moist cream cheese donut can become especially tantalizing in the early morning hours. There isn't a lot of choice in Lawrence for late-night treats, but Munchers is definitely capable of fulfilling this niche. I was careful to specify above that the donuts I was talking about were "cream cheese" donuts. This is because the rest of their donuts and other baked goods are only at par or less. The majority of their other baked goods are utterly plain. They are best described by complete lack of superlatives. They are unmemorable and hovering just below adequate. The interior of Munchers isn't much to look at, nor does it need to be, but it can feel a tad unkept. They accept only cash, which can be a damper if you're prone to using only plastic. And another make problem is that if you plan on visiting during the later hours of their 24 hour service, you're most likely to find a picked-over selection of dried out donuts and (surprisingly often) no cream cheese donuts to be found. So, where does this leave me? I keep going back, even though I need to scrounge up cash each time, even though they don't have anything fresh during the majority of their open hours, even though most of their products are squarely unimpressive. For whatever reason, I often find myself at Muncher's. I know I should care about all the knocks against it, but there's something about this place that defies the rating that it "should" get (and the rating I do give it). Review: 2.5 stars.

Cini mini's are amazing! This is a bakery and not your average cookie cutter donut shop. A must stop!

The best donuts in the world, 24 hours a day. Heaven.

I usually visited this place after midnight. This place open 24-7. I like eclair and cream puff from this place very much, especially when I put them in a fridge for one or two hours. Everything with cinnamon is also good. I hope I have a chance to go there in the morning. I heard that it is crowded. I hope this place will renovate their shop to be a nice coffee shop. Isn't it great to have a great pastry while working in a coffee shop.

Sorry to say I can't recommend this bakery for anything more then a quick snack stop. They really dropped the ball on a full sheet cake I ordered for a 60th birthday. After numerous discussions regarding icing colors, it was I who was undecided, I thought we'd nailed it down. Pick up the cake and to my surprise it has no icing decor at all except the happy birthday. Totally white cake. Kid checked the ticket and all color instructions were written down...just not done and no one to do them. Thankfully I had fresh flowers to decorate with. They gave me 5$ discount and a see ya later. The cake was spongy. I've had better from Costco.

Let me start with this: if they took plastic, it's a 5 out of 5. That aside, it's a 24-hour donut hut with few frills, and whether you're stumbling in late Saturday night, or stopping in early Tuesday morning, it's the perfect vibe. The product? When they're warm, it's like heaven. Basically anything you can ask for from a bakery, and dirt cheap to boot. Drinks and such as well, because there's nothing like washing down a fried cinnamon roll with a big glass of milk. Parking, all that other stuff? Ignore it. This is one of those places where it's worth it.

Above average fried bakery items. Very limited Danish choices. Good old time feel.

  • Tracy M.

Cream Cheese donut & the cream puffs are heaven. The mini cinnamon rolls are my kids favs. Everything else not so great, not horrible, but when I want to indulge I want my taste buds to sing. Locally owned & operated for at least 25 years so they must be doing something right.

I'm been going to Munchers Bakery since I was 4 years old! I'm in love with the chocolate croissants! I have never been able to find a chocolate croissants that tastes as good as Munchers!!

For some reason I love this place. Open 24 hours a day, they have lots of great treats. Part donut store, part bakery. The lady working the front told me this: 1. Owner starts mixing next day's batch at 11 pm. 2. The Baker starts baking at 2am. When they are done at 9am, that's it until 4am the next day. I went into this place this past weekend for a 2am grease fix and found out the cupboards were bare. Didn't want to wait 2 hours for the next round of Munchers to arrive. Check it out. For the price, you can't beat it.

Meh. I was in the neighborhood so I stopped in for a brownie. It was ok, just like every time I've had Munchers. Ok, but not great. My brownie tasted kind of like a doughnut, either it had been sitting in the sugar-heavy air for a while, or they were frying doughnuts while baking the brownie. And the next day my coat kind of smelled like a doughnut just from being inside for a few minutes. I do like that they are open 24 hours, and they are cheap (85 cents for a brownie or cupcake) but the interior is a bit dark and it feels like it could use a good scrub and a paint job. I think the biggest dissapointment for me is the lack of interesting things to try. Munchers carries the standard vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, brownies, doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, etc., but doesn't have anything new or different. Nothing I couldn't easily bake myself or buy at the grocery store.

I know two stars seems harsh. I lived in Lawrence when I was going to KU and I spent a lot of time at Munchers. Usually my experience is delightful. I enjoy an AMAZING cream cheese doughnut and all is right with the world. But currently they have a gentleman working there that is less than pleasant. I stopped in while in Lawrence to get one of these delectable treats - which they are famous for - I say "Hello. Do you have any cream cheese doughnuts?" And he just shakes his head and rudely says "Nope." No, I'm sorry or any kind of apology. Usually this doesn't bother me. But my friend had just said as we were driving there "I haven't had much luck with this place. They have about 10 doughnuts in their case and the gentleman working there is super rude." And I said "No way. You must have been there on an off day." Well. Same guy. Same situation. Too bad.

Wow! I LOVE this place!!! Where else have you ever heard of a bakery that's open 24/7?! How cool is that?! That's definitely not the only thing that makes Muncher's Bakery amazing -- It's definitely the pastries and donuts that they make. I have yet to try one thing that I do not like. Considering that a couple miles away you've got a few cupcake shops that price gauge the heck out of you for one cupcake for $3 (!!!!!), Muncher's is VERY fairly priced. Most donuts are about 95 cents. If you're not sure of what to get, my favorites are: Cream puffs, Eclairs, Maple iced cinnamon rolls and the danishes. A have a friend who absolutely LOVES the cream cheese brownies... I will have to try one next time I go. :) Forget about the complaints that this place doesn't use credit/debit cards. Get some cash or write a check, it's totally worth it.

Forget Dunkin Doughnuts, Krispy Kreme or whatever floundering attempt at fresh pastries you have tried before, Munchers is where it is at. Yes, yes it is open 24 hours but don't let this fool you into thinking this is after bar fare--their doughnuts and pastries are delicious anytime and will challenge any other pastry shop to a duel and come out a top. The entire selection is very good. As it has been noted they obviously are not rolling doughnuts out every hour so I suggest asking for what is fresh and you will not be disappointed. Prices are very fair. Would frequent more but they are cash only which is an inconvenience in this age, but once you know this you can come prepared or if you are like me, scrap together your dashboard coins you had stored away for the toll road. A Lawrence tradition that will raise the bar on any future doughnut dining you will ever have.

I can't believe this place only has 7 reviews. After finding their cream cheese donut, I had a new all time favorite! The first two times I stopped in, they were out. However one Sunday morning, when the cream cheese love nuggets were still in rows, I was changed forever. Munchers, an ugly-named joint in an ugly strip mall off the beaten path. The place, with it's faded decor hasn't had a makeover...ever. All of this, it just makes the bakery a real bakery. Munchers is what it is. Go there now. It's always open.

  • Katelyn C.

I love being able to go somewhere for a cheap late night treat. The downside? The selection can be bad late at night and they don't take debit cards. Some of the treats are delicious, and some are mediocre, but it's always fun to go.
