Chips were not fresh, salsa was not good. I ordered shredded beef taco and was shocked at how fast the food came out, a little too fast if you know what I mean. I have to say I was disappointed that it came in prefab taco shells and not real corn tortilla shells. I picked one up and the amount of grease that dripped out was gross. It was saturating my plate and the taco shell. I am a Mexican food snob as well, I grew up in the southwest where we know what the real deal is. The Mexican restaurants here have no right to call themselves Mexican food, they are a poor substitute.

The salsa tasted like watered down ketchup and the chips were stale. I ordered the chicken burrito lunch special that came with plain as could be rice and the refried beans that were as runny as the salsa was red. The burrito itself wasn't awful, but given the quality of the rest of the food, it was over priced even at lunch special prices. The service was fine, but the food was B A D. Will not be back.

This a great neighborhood cafe to visit for Mexican food. The chips and salsa are served with a small dish of delightful spinach queso. All of the fajita dishes are excellent. Finally, the service is outstanding.

Terrible place. I live close by and really wanted to like this place. Nope. Food here is iffy. There's a thing about the chile relleno that was weird. They have two versions, with two different breadings, and the regular one isn't the one Everyone knows and loves. Then there's the verde enchilada sauce. It has meat it. Yuck. Service here is terrible. The servers were not friendly when I was explaining my picky child's order (no cheese in the bean and cheese burrito). When they brought it out wrong, he blamed the picky order for it being wrong. But the worst is that our orders took FOREVER every single time we went there (we always had a group of 6-9 people). They didn't apologize or anything. Thus happened three times. Then I decided to stop punishing my dinner guests and myself and never return. Best bet in my book is Mi Ranchito.

We like heading to this place when we're in the mood for something to curb our frequent Mexican cravings. The food isn't stellar, and the vegetarian options are available, albeit limited. However, the friendly and prompt service along with the comfortable decor keeps us coming back. Our meals always seem to come out incredibly quick, except for a couple occasions where they were having an "off" night. I really appreciate how our servers make sure we have what we need, but generally tend to leave us alone to enjoy our meal. The margaritas aren't bad, and the salsa is nice and chunky with lots of flavor. The best part is that you'll almost never wait for a table!

$5 lunch specials, $6 cocktails, $7-8 margaritas. Beer selection is mostly major labels/macro brews. Great food presentation, hot coffee they take time to refresh your cup, warm chips & fresh salsa with plenty of cilantro! Very accommodating if you need ingredients adjusted to be veggie friendly!

I have nothing good to say about El Sol. The food was horrible, my boyfriend actually got sick from eating there. My food was sub par. Our server was nice enough. We will not be going back there again. Save yourself the stomach ace and go to a different median food place.

"El Sol" Is Not A New "Shining Star" In The Lawrence Restaurant Scene Price: $ Another closed El Mezcal location in a shopping center on the corner of Wakarusa and Bob Billings Parkway (now called "El Sol"), I had read in El Sol's inaugural review that they were a "Tex-Mex" restaurant. My fellow Elite '14 member had high praise for their food, service, and ambience, so we had to give them a try. Our experience was once again very average in a town not well town for outstanding cuisine and I found not a single Tex-Mex item on the menu. In fact, when I asked the waiter if they were a Tex-Mex restaurant, he stated "definitely not". As mentioned in recent reviews, I am a Mexican food snob, having grown up in LA where Mexican restaurants outnumber Bentleys and spending three years in San Antonio, Texas during my first Air Force assignment. Not changing my modus operandi, I stuck with the basics, tacos and enchiladas, during my first visit to see if they can get them right before moving on to more complex dishes. The restaurant's decor is very colorful with natural wood tables, bright tones, and reminiscent of a traditional Mexican cantina. The service was very attentive, friendly, and fast. Our server, Rafael, was extremely polite and amenable to answering my many questions. We ordered the guacamole ($3.99) and the white cheese dip (queso blanco - medium - $2.99). The guacamole was small, made with avocado and SMALL PIECES OF TOMATO, but tasty. The queso blanco was warm and well seasoned, adhering to the pre-fab chips, another disappointment and a dead giveaway of a sub-par restaurant in my experience. I had the 27 ounce margarita (on the rocks - $6.99) which was decent, not very strong, and priced $2 more than El Mezcal. My wife had the horchata, a Mexican rice-based drink which was better than El Mezcal's various versions. My wife ordered the cheese quesadilla, coming with a small dab of guacamole and pico di gallo ($4.99) and a cheese and onion enchilada with queso blanco instead of red sauce (ala carte - $1.99), coming with refried beans. It is difficult to mess-up a quesadilla and El Sol was again no exception. She liked the enchilada, but queso blanco was a bit too spicy for her Itialan tastebuds (the spiciest dish in Italy is penne arribiatta). I decided to forego the rice and get down to brass tacks, ordering two shredded beef tacos and a cheese and onion enchilada ($8.49) combo plate (all beans). The tacos came in pre-fab corn tortillas and the beef, although skimpy, was well seasoned and topped with a little lettuce, white cheese, and chopped tomato. I saved some of the guacamole for my tacos, borrowed my wife's pico de gallo, and added their salsa, which was not bad. The tacos were not great. The enchilada sauce was a bit too watery and lacked taste, the enchilada cool, not even lukewarm, another disappointment. True Tex-Mex enchiladas are smothered in chili con carne and topped with cheese, but this bore no resemblance to any Tex-Mex I have eaten and was one of the worst enchiladas I have had. Again, not my favorite Mexican restaurant in Lawrence by any stretch and we will likely not return given the distance from our home and the fact that there are at least four better Mexican eateries in closer proximity. I would give them 2 1/2 stars (bombs in CombatCritic speak) if possible, exactly why I use a 10-point Likert-type scale in my blog reviews ... CombatCritic Gives El Sol Mexican Restaurant 5 Out of 10 Bombs ... BOMBAS ARE BUENAS!

This restaurant just opened at the location of the recently closed El Mezcal in the strip mall at the southeast corner of Wakarusa and 15th St. The restaurant is part of a small chain, owned by a restauranteur in Topeka. He also owns a restaurant by the same name in Ottawa, Kansas and the Tres Mexicanos restaurant on 23rd St. in Lawrence. El Sol is primarily Tex Mex without such offerings as black beans or expensive wines, which would be available at an interior Mex restaurant. But relative to Tex Mex, El Sol is excellent. I was particularly impressed to find that there were no upcharges for the changes and additions we requested, such as additions of green chili sauce, jalapenos, and corn tortillas, and substitutions for the refried beans. We especially liked the soft chile rellenos and the tilapia filet infused with chipotle peppers and cooked with limes.

Been seeing a ton of commercials during Royals games so they got me to bite and I visited. Really liked that they brought cheese dip with the Chips and Salsa but that is about where it ended. The shrimp diablo came out and some of the shrimp still had the tails and legs attached. It required surgery before it could be eaten. Service was sub par and did not get asked if we wanted more salsa or drink refills until we had completed our meal. Not many folks in there and I understand when people are short staffed but still would have liked someone to have come by and at least asked how our meal was.

This is our "go-to" neighborhood Mexican restaurant. We come here maybe once a week for a quick dinner. The food is tasty, the service is quick and friendly and the price is very affordable. It's not the best I've ever had, but definitely very good and worthy of recommendation.

I go to Title Boxing Club next door several days a week and when I noticed that a new Mexican restaurant was opening up in the old El Mez 3 location I was skeptical to say the least. I had a horrible experience at the old El Mez and wasn't sure what to expect from this new place but decided to try it out since it's so close to my apartment. I've now been here 3 times and was satisfied at every visit. They have great daily food and drink specials, especially their $4.99 jumbo margaritas on Friday/Saturday. One of the best margaritas I've had in Lawrence (and I've tried nearly all of them in my 8 years in this town). Service is prompt and very friendly. Their salsa isn't bad but it definitely could use some improvement (hence why I took off 1 star), a bit too sweet for me. But the chips are warm and fresh. I've tried the fajita tacos, the steak chimichanga and the steak and potato burrito. All were excellent. Especially the steak and potato burrito...SO SO good and not something I've seen on other menus in town. My boyfriend had the carnitas dinner last time and said it was delicious as well. Also very reasonable prices compared to some of the other places in town. I will definitely be back--again and again.

This place is mediocre. The chips are good, but the salsa is completely flavorless. The food is just okay, nothing to write home about. The service is middle of the road as well. I Had to ask for a box three times once, but the employees seemed friendly.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
