Pretty good selection on the menu. Decent prices. They had about a dozen specials on the board. I had one of the fish dinner specials. The server wasn't especially attentive, forgot part of my meal (side dish and drink). Food was decent. Saw a family of four leave because their server was too slow in getting around to take their order. Play area outside by the Giant Rooster. Big Rig parking out back. Open 24 hours. Smoking and non-smoking areas.
Stopped on our way home to Indy after flying in to Ft. Wayne. Looking for a good local joint for breakfast. Mistake #1: depended on 'sight lines' instead of 'Yelp' reviews, my usual practice. Entered a very basic truck stop restaurant which are often good finds. Quick service for menus and beverage order. Decent unsweetened tea which was kept full. Second waitress took our food order. Both wait staff were smiling and pleasant. Many food options which sounded good. I love good homemade corned beef hash - but did not select as waitress told me it came frozen. Opted for 1/2 order of Biscuits & Gravy with 2 eggs fried over easy. Eggs were prepared just as I like them - flavorful, rich and runny. They provided a nice complement to the mildly seasoned sausage gravy. I am a pepper sauce fanatic so was concerned when I saw only Tabasco Sauce on the table. I was very pleased to learn that there were three additional choices. I liberally added Louisiana Hot Sauce to the gravy. Good flavors, tough dry biscuits. My wife, Tami, queried the waitress for a recommendation between an Omelette and French Toast. Went with the recommendation and had French Toast. Mistake #2: An honest misunderstanding resulted in the small order of 4 half slices. That was okay as it was very plainly presented looking lost and forlorn on the plate. No garnish or even a dash of powdered sugar to dress up the presentation. The texture was a bit dry though a light touch of cinnamon was evident. The F Toast and biscuits were warm but not hot giving a steam table impression. Gravy was good but also not hot. Eggs, as I said, were perfect. If we were to return, and we wouldn't go out of our way to do so, I'd get a more basic breakfast which might be more likely to be prepared fresh (a minute [with a long 'u'], I think is the culinary term). Excellence in service can't hide substandard food. Given other restaurant choices, I'll choose another next time.
Good average diner food, tinged with memories of driving by as a kid and delighting in the giant rooster statue. I've only visited for breakfast and have never been disappointed....you just need to keep your expectations realistic. I've tried the biscuits & gravy, various omelettes and other diner breakfast staples...and maybe a slice of pie here and there. The service is adequate and restroom clean. It is also a great cheap way to start a road trip, if driving down from Ft. Wayne or up from Indy. Bonus=giant rooster photo ops!
