El Meson is my favorite hometown restaurant. Every time I am back in Plainfield I have to stop in and at least get a queso dip! The staff is so friendly, and they have a great family atmosphere. Their food is always good, and if there is a problem the staff will take care of you. I would recommend the shrimp fajitas...they are delicious!

El Meson has 2 locations in Plainfield (now) and this review is for the location closer to Walmart...my husband and I got carry-out from here one night. Although affordable and ready quickly, the food was gross. Soggy and stuck to the bottoms of the containers is the only I can describe what we ate. We had previously purchased carry-out from the Kroger shopping mall location and that food was good. Not the best Mexican ever, but good enough that we tried the new location. I'm sure it's all in the cook and how that person is preparing everything. We didn't return after our 2nd experience.

This is more 3.5 stars than 4, but I felt like rounding up this time. A very good lunch option in the Plainsfield/Avon area. The chicken fajita salad was very very good. The combination lunches looked like the standard fare... nothing special. The carnitas is solid. Chips and salsa are plentiful and taste freshly fried. Prices are reasonable. I'd recommend this place with no hesitation.

People seem to love this place but I don't get it. Salsa was boring and the queso was obviously old and clumpy. Food was bland and overcooked. Good service!

Woah! Love this place. Really great food, really great prices, fast seating. I've frequently been afraid of having a long wait, given how busy it is, but it's never been a problem. Order their chorizo, it's good. I ordered a glass of Negro Modelo (draft) and they brought me a 32 oz. mug. I was a little irritated at the mix-up, but for $3.50, I couldn't argue. I'll certainly be a regular here.

Not impressed at all. Everything tastes so bland. Service was mediocre at best. Bathroom smelled like urine. It was a serious disappointment based on other reviews. And my expectations were not unrealistic - I get I'm going to a chain restaurant in a strip mall - I'm not thinking it's going to be gourmet but edible would have been nice. Save yourself the disappointment and chose another destination for Mexican.

This is the best Mexican food in Plainfield. The colorful interior is quirky, but charming. They are always pretty busy, but you rarely have to wait for a seat, and you always get attentive service. Their whole menu is interesting (for a mexican joint in an Indy suburb) and I've never ordered something I didn't like. Their salsa is always great, just don't expect it to always taste exactly the same, because its made fresh daily and not always by the same cook. The bright atmosphere and cheap drinks combined with speedy and friendly service and tasty food make a great and energizing dining experience.

I believe this is a hidden treasure. The bright colors as mentioned previously are great! But also, they have a large selection of food and much of it is unique to other Mexican restaurants. I randomly had the wet burrito because it was on special and it was amazing!! Get the WET BURRITO. It's the delicious grilled chicken and shrimp with rice smothered in that melted white Mexican cheese!!

Pretty much the same food as every other Mexican restaurant, but prices seem better. This location is better than the one down the street. Their pitcher of margaritas are pretty good as well probably the best I've had at comparable restaurants to this one. Casual and delicious food! Portions are usually large and the waiters are generally minimally attentive.

El Meson is your typical Mexican restaurant with the usual food and drink - margaritas, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, etc. They do have a big menu, and lunch specials. I ordered the steak tacos, which were pretty good. It would be nice if there was more on them (like lettuce, tomatoes, cheese). Their queso was really good - the large can easily be shared. The atmosphere is very fun - lots of colors, futbol on TV, and latin music in the background. Our waiter was very nice, as well as the woman at the front. For not being busy our waiter did not come around that much, but it wasn't terrible. For the price, I think everything was reasonable. I didn't get a chance to try the margaritas, but I'll save that for another time. You also get chips and salsa for free, like the other places.

Absolutely love their margaritas! You get a lot for a great price. The queso and good is amazing as well. And the staff is great! One of my favorite places to eat and a go to when I need a drink after a long day

In town for a baseball tourney. Got a combo $7.99. Super deal. Couldn't eat it all, and I always can eat it all! Quick attentive service. Everything tasted fantastic.

I was looking forward to trying this place, I hear things from my fellow West-siders about this being a place they frequent. I was not blown away... First, LOOK AT ALL THE COLORS!!!! This place is sooo brightly colored and the lights are sooo bright, I kinda love it. Anywho, this place was packed when we came on a Thursday night (good sign). Seated promptly & chips and salsa were brought quick by the chips guy, yay! These were good, not my favorite ever but good. Service took a while to get drinks ordered but was attentive from there. Not super friendly, but I could also tell he was quite busy. We ordered the small cheese dip to go along with our chips and salsa because I was craving a good cheese dip...this was not a good cheese dip, I was so sad. It was ok and overpriced at over $3 for a small bowl of cheese (see pic). I ordered a chicken dish and my husband got some type of burrito. He liked his alright but wasn't raving about it. Flavor was decent for my chicken dish but it was a bit dry. Guac was tasty and helped with that. We both enjoyed our meals but were not super impressed. I would definitely give this place another chance to try out their drinks and something else from their menu, hope to be wow-ed.

Went on a Sunday afternoon. Service was attentive. I had the Fundida Fajitas which were really good. Wife has enchiladas which she liked also. Meat was juicy, not typical over cooked and dry like other Mexican places we've been. Will return.

Service was acceptable and the food was edible. My review is as bland as was my experience.

I wish Yelp would let us do half star ratings because I would give El Meson 3 1/2 stars. It's better than other Midwest-Mex places but not quite authentic or yummy enough to earn 4 or 5 stars. When I first walked in, I immediately loved the interior, it was your classic, fun, brightly colored mexican decor. The staff was very quick and friendly. Whenever I try a new mexican restaurant...I go for the basics. I figure if they screw those up there is no sense in being more adventurous. I got a combo with a beef taco, cheese enchilada and a chalupa. Everything was well prepared and above average for americanized mexican. The salsa was excellent! Very reasonable priced with one of the better kids menus I've seen (for a mexican rest). Our total bill was around $25 for 2 adults and 2 kids. This will be our go-to place for a quick mex-fix!

El Meson is the best among all the various Mex-American restaurants. They have the same general menu with fajitas and combination plates, etc. but they seem to bring a little extra to the table. The food seems a little fresher, a little better prepared, a little better service. It all adds up to the best Mexican restaurant on Indy's Westside.

I like the decor, but the food doesn't impress me. I've eaten here for lunch several times. I prefer the other Mexican Restaurant down the road....El Jaripeo

Excellent lunch menu with incredible prices. I usually get the chicken burrito, and it is always great. It would be better if they kept the drink refills coming!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
