OUT-OF-TOWNERS -- READ THIS: First of all, do a little research before lashing out at Amish Acres. This is NOT a working Amish farm, though Nappanee is a very Amish community. Anyway, Amish Acres is still a historical destination and certainly worth the visit. Take note that many of the buildings (cider mill, etc.) have been relocated to this destination in order to preserve their Amish histories and to share them with visitors. Yes, there is a brief buggy ride, and yes, the guide speaks over a loudspeaker. Yes, there is electricity all around. No, you will not observe Amish families from behind a glass casement as they milk cows and care for their young (give me a break, folks). Yes, if you actually take the time to drive around Nappanee, you will probably get stuck behind an Amish family in a buggy. And yes, if you live nearby, the Amish will happily butcher and prepare your chickens for a small fee, as they have done for us. But as for Amish Acres itself, simply consider it Nappanee's educational museum/restaurant. For small-town Indiana, this place is fascinating. My husband and I went here yesterday for his birthday dinner. We ordered the chicken dinner ($14.98 per adult). Another reviewer complained that they only give you two pieces of chicken. Well, true--but YOU GET SECONDS. AND THIRDS. It is all-you-can-eat. If you want more, just ask for more. Also, the broasted chicken was amazing as it had a wonderful flavor. The food was overall outstanding. The service was friendly. Would I recommend that you visit Amish Acres? Absolutely. I would also advise you to take the time to read the history on the back of the menu and, following lunch or dinner, explore the grounds and read the histories posted at each building as well. Try to appreciate what Amish Acres has done in preserving as much Amish history as they could. **I would also like to add, this place is not a tourist trap. You might run into some foreigners or folks coming out of the theatre, but it doesn't mean it's a tourist trap. You aren't elbow-to-elbow trying to get around the place.

So let me preface this review by saying this is my first visit to any sort of Amish community. But I have to laugh at some of the reviews that I have read about this location and others like it. Not sure what people are expecting but even as a first timer I was more than satisfied with my visit here. My only regret is the Amish do NOT work on Sundays so everything we saw and did today were handled by regular everyday folks. The staff told me it is a 60/40 mix of regular staff and Amish. I already knew that the Amish are very religious so this did not surprise me. Not to mention I am pretty smart and made a simple phone call before making the 3 hour drive to ensure what we were getting into and they delivered. It was a beautiful drive from Indianapolis to Nappanee for sure. And once you got there we saw many Amish on their horse and buggy and also lots of them on bicycles. When we arrive and get out of the car they were making an announcement that the last buggy ride of the day was departing in 5 minutes and to go inside to purchase tickets. This was the only bad experience of the entire trip and it really wasn't a huge deal to us. But we go inside and at the counter was very young teenage girls who had no professionalism to them whatsoever. We inquired about the buggy ride and you would have thought we were speaking a foreign language. Finally after a painful 10 minute interaction the girl told us you can no longer just purchase a buggy ride but you have to buy a package and she said we would not be able to do that today. Sunday June 22nd. So we then step over and wait to be seated and we stood there for about 5 minutes and it was like we were ghosts, so I spoke up again and said you can seat us for dinner cant you. And they took us to a table that we did not like, the place was not busy at the moment and we asked to sit by a window and she told us we would have to sit where she brought us. Ya just know I immediately asked for a manager. The manager came over and it just so happened that it was the very lovely supervisor who I had spoken to on the phone who convinced me to come in the first place. She tried to pay for our meal and I refused. Then she gave us a gift certificate for 2 to come back for all of the tours and dinner!! That is one person I will not soon forget. Ok everything else was GREAT from here on out. Our server was amazing and took great care of us. On Sunday's they only do what I call the buffet at your table menu. They have 3 meats and you get to pick 2 of them. So we picked the Pot Roast and the Broasted Chicken. The other choice that we opted out of was ham. Everything was wonderful but that chicken had to be some of the juiciest and most flavorful chicken I have eaten and I love some chicken. I forgot to say they bring out fresh baked bread and butter, an assortment of pickled items. And a bowl of ham and bean soup. All wonderful. For side dishes they had sage dressing, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy. I was not a big fan of their gravy but everything else was wonderful. Dinner came with a non alcoholic beverage and I got iced tea. No sweet tea just regular. Bummer. But their sun tea was so good I didnt even add any sugar and I drank probably 4 glasses. We got all that for like $18 per person. And that is all you can eat not that we could eat anymore than they brought the first time. How I managed to save room for dessert I don't know. But I did. She brought out a huge tray of desserts and I opted for pecan pie being the true southerner that I am. It was not bad. So as we go to check out I was browsing through their store and came across a sign that said all bread and bakery items half off. So they were selling thier breads and pies, cookies etc for 50% off. That explains why this one couple had like 10 pies on the counter. I recommend this place and we will be back for sure. Times have evolved and I cannot speak to how it used to be but even without the Amish their in the restaurant today I sure felt their presence and had a great time. So I would not let any of these negative reviews stop you from going. I grew up in a strict pentecostal home in the 70's and back then women couldn't wear pants, cut their hair or wear makeup and look them today they are like circus clowns in pants with men's haircuts. So if the pentecostals can change so can the Amish I guess. But I sure had a wonderful time today. We left and made the hour drive to see the sunset at the Michigan City IN Beach on Lake Michigan and it was wonderful and then headed over to the casino before the 3 hour drive home. Check those reviews out too. It was a great day out for sure. Had it not been for the teenagers I would have given this place a 5 star rating.

I must admit that the whole farm itself was very touristy and a bit on the pricey side but the meal I had was outstanding as we had their family style "Threshers Dinner" which consisted of: amishacres.com/threshers… Just read it here. I don't feel like typing it all out. Everything was delicious but the things that really, really pleased my palate was: the ham and bean soup, fried chicken, and the apple dumpling for dessert. They did a good job of recreating that "Amish-feel" throughout the farm.

Everything is very expensive. They have their own cider mill but the cider they sell isn't even their own. It cost $6 just to go out to the pumpkin patch where you can then buy a pumpkin

Recently had dinner at Amish Acres as part of a rehearsal dinner for a wedding my wife was in. We showed up at about 6:15 for reservations at 6:30. After about a 5 to 10 minute wait we were taken to a back dining room that appeared to be set aside for large groups. There were about 40 of us and they already had all the table placements set up with desert (pie) already on the table. Many of us choose our seats based on which pie was at the table! There was even some switching going on.... Once everyone was seated we were promptly presented with a choice of beverage that was brought around on a cart so that we did not have to wait for someone to take our order. There were about 8 people or so waiting on our entire group. As the meal had already been selected for us, they brought out the ham and bean soup shortly after the drinks were served. The bread was very tasty and soft and went well with the soup. After the soup had been served they started bringing out the main course that consisted of potatoes with gravy, roast beef, stuffing, beef and noodles, and fried chicken. The various dishes were brought out on plates that were to be shared around the table. Once the meal had been served and some time had passed they walked around asking if anyone wanted seconds of any of the dishes. When one of our table asked about getting some more fried chicken the server offered to get whatever piece they wanted (leg, thigh, etc.). All of the food I tried was pretty good, nothing out of this world though in my opinion. I personally enjoy the Essenhaus near Middleberry. Everyone we dealt with was very friendly and all the servers took very good care of us. If you have a large gathering planned, I would definitely recommend Amish Acres. They were ready for our group of 40 as the food had been prepared in anticipation of our arrival.

I thought the place was very pricy. The movie they show at first is boring, And the Amish house they show is empty, just bldgs of what the Amish live like. No Amish people on premises. Wagon ride and Horse and buggy was a rip off. But the restaurant was very good and good service. The tours were overrated and overpriced. The website says demonstrations but none were available. Probably will not return

This is my second visit. The last one was 25 years ago. Good memories from that visit, not so much for this visit. A 45 minute wait to be seated and dining room is 1/3 full. My first impression was nobody knew what they were suppose to do. Very disjointed. Then we get the waitress who got up on the wrong side of the bed. Bitched and complain. That's all she did. We had to ask her to take our food order Refill our water glasses, bring us dessert and the check. Her name was Shelby. Talking about the food is the same as many people state. Canned, cheap bottom of the barrel. Cheap cut of ham and turkey. So-so bread and low quality desserts. Potatoes were blah as was the gravy. Sweet pickles way to sweet. Just a poor meal at a place that's living off a memory. Take a pass on The food and gift store. Nothing is made on site. Some of the buildings they sell food in smell moldy.(Fudge store).

While any establishment can suffer from a poor night of service, I have never been to a place with poorer attitude towards their customers and more incompetent staff. First our reservation (which was scheduled days in advance) did not apparently allow the staff to think of having the table ready to go for when we arrived. After waiting 15 minutes and having another large party seated who arrived after us, we spoke up. We were promptly helped... 10 minutes later. When it came to the food, it was okay, but certainly not worth the $20.00 price tag. It also took 15 minutes for even the first course to arrive. While this might be okay during a dinner rush, there was only one other party of 10 in the dining room. A further issue arose when they brought the meat plates and we discovered that they did not bring enough for everyone to have chicken (the meat they brag about being so good. It took another 10 minutes and running across the restaurant to track down a server. When the server was confronted, she looked flabbergasted that someone would be upset with the service. Finally when we asked for the dessert to go, it took them three tries for them to get the right amount of desserts out to the table. Long story short- Deplorable service, average food, and incompetent staff. Would not recommend.

We just had our wedding at Amish Acres and we couldn't have asked for a better day. Everything was perfect! Becky and her crew put alot.of time and effort into making it a day not only we won't forget but our guest won't either! Our guest can't stop talking about how amazing the food was and how beautiful the venue was! We highly recommend Amish Acres!

This is my second visit to an 'Amish' restaurant and bakery. I had high hopes but was disappointed with the actual meal. I'm pretty positive the beans were canned and the potatoes were from a box. The bread was blah. The only things we enjoyed were the chicken broasted to perfection as well as the various desserts we tried. I should add the meal is technically all we could eat but we didn't want more. The desserts are limited to one slice per person but I think it should be the other way around. If I. Could do it all again or if given the chance to go to any other Amish restaurant I will always skip the meal and I will just fill up on pie. They know how to make desserts!

The place is definitely a tourist trap however I was here to try the food. I came for lunch and it wasn't that expensive. I had the beef and noodles (which was a starch fest since they put it over mashed potatoes) however it was really good. I also got green beans for a side which were well flavored. I also had sassafras tea which was very good and a bit different for this Texas boy. Like mixing tea and root beer but I definitely approved. I also tried their Kolsch beer which was an incredibly smooth and tasteful ale that was well balanced. Finally I had shoo-fly pie which I found to be well crafted and tasty but didn't fully fit my own personal palate for preferential status.

The tours, are great at Amish Acres. The food is very bland, and not worth the price. And it wasn't served hot.

Disappointed! Perhaps I misinterpreted the web site. I expected to tour a working Amish farm, to eat a home style meal and my daughter wanted to see soap making and to ride a horse-drawn wagon. The glitzy web pages should have alerted me; glitz is not the Amish way. One enters the restaurant through the souvenir shop, complete with its very non-Amish "credit cards accepted", electronic cash register, telephone and PA system. The meal was good and plentiful but not great and everything seemed to be freshly prepared, not canned. Our server was probably the most attentive but unobtrusive we have ever had. Too bad she spoke so much English (non-Amish) teen slang (awesome! like super! no problem) My daughter's expectation of a horse-drawn wagon ride and soap making were dashed when we were told that the soap making had been cancelled today and the horse in the web site photos had been replaced by a very non-Amish tractor! The tour guide had to use a very non-Amish PA system to be heard over the noise of the tractor. The tour itself consisted of a quick circle of the grounds with a stop at the now defunct schoolhouse, about ten minutes total. The guide may have been Amish; she at least was in costume. Her script was delivered in an unpleasantly shrill, bored and boring, rapid, expressionless voice. She was so well practiced and bored in her role that she could point to each feature of the tour behind her back, before we reached it, without turning toward it. The walking tour was led by a yawning teen, equally adept at reciting her script in the manner as the other guide but fortunately she did so in a pleasant tone. Her recitation was interrupted by frequent, open mouth yawns. I suspect she, too, was bored. During both tours, we helpfully were informed that the gift shops had items of interest for sale. The shops were typical of tourist traps. Lots of tacky, over-priced junk that can be found elsewhere along with a few items perhaps unique to Amish Acres. Who knows if any of it is made or produced by Amish. I have no idea who owns or runs the very non-Amish Amish Acres. I doubt any Amish are involved except perhaps a few employees. One would get a better "Amish experience" by parking in the lot and watching REAL Amish riding by in their horse-drawn buggies. Please, no gawking, pointing, etc; they are not on display. And no photos of them, either. Respect their dignity; they have more of it than Amish Acres. Amish Acres wreaks of commercialism. It is a tourist trap.

The Round Barn Theater at Amish Acres focuses completely on musical theater. I have been to some musicals before that haven't been done in a major city that have been hard on the ears, to say the least. This is not true of the productions at the Round Barn Theater. The actors and actresses can sing on-key (or at least on-key enough for a tone deaf gal like me). The costumes and sets are simple but fit with the musicals that they're performing. Overall, it's a fairly impressive show for the price you're paying. And, it's less of a pain than hitting up a show in Chicago.

Not what I remember. Service was poor. As mentioned by a few others no one seems to care. For the price you pay you do expect great food and service. Ask for some extra bread and told we could not get any as they were afraid of running out. This is at 5 pm. Took 15 minutes to get seated and place half empty. Manager did provide assistance and she was very polite to us. Wish I would have talked to her sooner.

I had the family style dinner with chicken and roast beef. Everything was very good. The pie was also very good. It's a nice place to eat, the food is great, the service was great, and the food came quickly.
