Okay, we died and went to heaven!! We felt so comfortable, safe and happy in this home - we didn't want to leave!! Everything you can possible think of is here - books, DVD's/Video's, TV, snacks, beverages, clean and comfortable rooms and the hosts are incredible (friendly, fun, informative and there when you need/want them). Breakfast was abundant with a delicious potato casserole, sausage, fruit, sweet bread, etc. More than most of us could eat but we all enjoyed! This is definitely a spoiling bed and breakfast - who would ever want to stay in a cold hotel room again after being treated as family at Homespun?! Can't wait for our next vacation to revisit them and enjoy the Nappanee area. Our experience was a "gift" - the hosts gave a free night for veterans over Veteran's Day weekend and we had the full bed and breakfast experience! The generosity of the Nappanee community showered us with gifts upon our arrival and we were treated as honored members of the town whereever we went! To Dennis and Diane - thank you for your generosity, kindness and friendship! To the Nappanee Community - thank you for remembering veterans with your gifts, discounts and appreciation!! We will return!

Warm, Welcoming and Fun! This is my favorite B and B! We found this gem in a Bed and Breakfast book for Indiana...it failed to recognize all of the gifts of this beautiful home. It is like the name implies...Victorian. Some owners can over do a theme...not these folks...the home is tastefully decorated with antiques that are warm and cozy...not stuffy at all. There were so many added touches to help to make one feel at home...from special scented soaps ...to sweet hand printed note cards for the do not disturb signs. It was our anniversary..and apon arrival we found a treat basket and an anniversary card waiting for us...very thoughtful. We stayed in the 'sewing room' ...which was the smallest of the suites. It was simply decorated with a sewing thread quilt.....on the most comfortable bed that I have ever slept upon. It was locally made by the amish...I asked. LOL Our room had a nice balcony....It was fun to sit under the stars and watch the amish buggies clipping on by. What a great sound to be awoken too...very sweet. Breakfast is served family style and usually I don't care for this...but the nature of the home owners being so lively and friendly made everyone feel right at home and actually enjoy taking with complete strangers. The home owners sell a cook book, mugs and several other items with the B and B's logo. We bought a holiday pottery ornament for our Christmas Tree. When we travel through amish country again...we are staying here!

Rocket Science Ice Cream

401 E Market St
Nappanee, 46550
Reviews:
Wow, great ice cream which is custom made just in front of you using liquid nitrogen for fast freeze. I looked this up online and could only find couple hits where this method is used, both in the Northern Indiana area. So assume this is not a common type of ice cream shop. This little shop is located in Coppes Common {401 E. Market} which is an old factory building with several small shops near downtown Nappanee. They have a good selection of suggested ice creams, but you can select any number of their ingredients and have your own flavor created. Assuming there is no waiting line, it takes around several minutes for the gentlemen to create your special treat. He puts the ingredients in a stainless steel bowl, and turns on the nitrogen, and mixes it all together with a large metal spoon. This is an Amish area and the man looked Amish...and was very nice. My wife and I shared a medium size {$4.50}, Turtle flavor which contained caramel, pecan nuts, crushed candy, cream etc. This was just the right size for two sharing a snack. It was the best ice cream I ever had. There is a nice seating area which had plenty of open seats. The only problem I would forsee is if the shopping area is crowded and a line forms because each order is custom made. We were there on a Thursday afternoon and there was no line. The Coppes Common shopping area is very nice and worth a visit. Probably 3 blocks or so from the center of town. There is a small grocery shop, wood-working shop, tea shop, Amish bakery {great cookies} and a couple others. Very clean restrooms and nice parking lot.
One word: WOW!! That pretty much sums it up. This place gives a whole new new meaning to homemade ice cream! You pick your ingredients from a rather large list of possibilities, they mix your ingredients of choice with fresh milk, and then they flash freeze it on the spot with liquid nitrogen (I believe). not only is it amazing ice cream, it is quite a spectacle to watch. I think this place is Amish owned and I am thinking they put their dairy cows to very good use! Everyone is here is very friendly and hospitable and they are very proud of the creations that they serve, as the should be. Have I mentioned that the ice cream is amazing???
For my Chicago readers, this place was pretty much the Amish owned version of iCream. They make ice cream from scratch using real cream or the dairy of your choosing and freeze it with liquid nitrogen. Because it's made from the raw ingredient, it take a little longer than just slapping a scoop in a dish or on a cone. But the flavor possibilities are endless. Luckily for me they have a few signature creations to take the edge off making a decision. We shared one of their suggested creations, a toffee coffee ice cream. I think it's the coolest thing to watch it get made. And unlike iCream, it actually tasted freaking amazing, delightfully rich and sinfully smooth. Some of the most wholesome ice cream I have had in a long time. Such an indulgent treat.

Thank goodness - a closer, local answers to the the Linway Plaza Hacienda! I have absolutely nothing against Hacienda - it's a super great place but it's so awesome to see Lindo pop up in downtown Nappanee! Good prices and menu. LOTS of seating... like for days. If you come in early for lunch you may think it's overkill but nope, those seats fill up fast! Festive interior, crispy house made tortilla chips, good service.
Great staff. Very friendly atmosphere. Great food. Large portions. Good cost. This is the best Mexican restaurant within 20 miles. Love it!
Decor: 7/10: Meh. Nothing fancy. They had a cool rooster painting I wouldn't mind having. Ambience: 4/10: While we were there, water was dripping from the ceiling. Ick. Bathroom was really clean. Yay! Staff: 8/10: Very nice, attentive, friendly. Pricing: 10/10: can NOT beat the prices here Food: -Chips and salsa: 9/10: chips seemed homemade, so tasty. Salsa was not too spicy but also really flavorful -queso: 8/10: delicious, but nothing special -beans and rice: 7/10: rice was bland and the beans were spicy -ground beef taco: I chose a corn tortilla and it fell apart before I could even have one bite. I didn't mind eating it with my fork. Beef was good, toppings were crisp and fresh (cilantro and lettuce), cheese was cheddar. I'd go back and try some other options. Price can't be beat.

Amish Acres Historic Farm & Heritage Resort

1600 W Market St
Nappanee, 46550
Reviews:
OUT-OF-TOWNERS -- READ THIS: First of all, do a little research before lashing out at Amish Acres. This is NOT a working Amish farm, though Nappanee is a very Amish community. Anyway, Amish Acres is still a historical destination and certainly worth the visit. Take note that many of the buildings (cider mill, etc.) have been relocated to this destination in order to preserve their Amish histories and to share them with visitors. Yes, there is a brief buggy ride, and yes, the guide speaks over a loudspeaker. Yes, there is electricity all around. No, you will not observe Amish families from behind a glass casement as they milk cows and care for their young (give me a break, folks). Yes, if you actually take the time to drive around Nappanee, you will probably get stuck behind an Amish family in a buggy. And yes, if you live nearby, the Amish will happily butcher and prepare your chickens for a small fee, as they have done for us. But as for Amish Acres itself, simply consider it Nappanee's educational museum/restaurant. For small-town Indiana, this place is fascinating. My husband and I went here yesterday for his birthday dinner. We ordered the chicken dinner ($14.98 per adult). Another reviewer complained that they only give you two pieces of chicken. Well, true--but YOU GET SECONDS. AND THIRDS. It is all-you-can-eat. If you want more, just ask for more. Also, the broasted chicken was amazing as it had a wonderful flavor. The food was overall outstanding. The service was friendly. Would I recommend that you visit Amish Acres? Absolutely. I would also advise you to take the time to read the history on the back of the menu and, following lunch or dinner, explore the grounds and read the histories posted at each building as well. Try to appreciate what Amish Acres has done in preserving as much Amish history as they could. **I would also like to add, this place is not a tourist trap. You might run into some foreigners or folks coming out of the theatre, but it doesn't mean it's a tourist trap. You aren't elbow-to-elbow trying to get around the place.
So let me preface this review by saying this is my first visit to any sort of Amish community. But I have to laugh at some of the reviews that I have read about this location and others like it. Not sure what people are expecting but even as a first timer I was more than satisfied with my visit here. My only regret is the Amish do NOT work on Sundays so everything we saw and did today were handled by regular everyday folks. The staff told me it is a 60/40 mix of regular staff and Amish. I already knew that the Amish are very religious so this did not surprise me. Not to mention I am pretty smart and made a simple phone call before making the 3 hour drive to ensure what we were getting into and they delivered. It was a beautiful drive from Indianapolis to Nappanee for sure. And once you got there we saw many Amish on their horse and buggy and also lots of them on bicycles. When we arrive and get out of the car they were making an announcement that the last buggy ride of the day was departing in 5 minutes and to go inside to purchase tickets. This was the only bad experience of the entire trip and it really wasn't a huge deal to us. But we go inside and at the counter was very young teenage girls who had no professionalism to them whatsoever. We inquired about the buggy ride and you would have thought we were speaking a foreign language. Finally after a painful 10 minute interaction the girl told us you can no longer just purchase a buggy ride but you have to buy a package and she said we would not be able to do that today. Sunday June 22nd. So we then step over and wait to be seated and we stood there for about 5 minutes and it was like we were ghosts, so I spoke up again and said you can seat us for dinner cant you. And they took us to a table that we did not like, the place was not busy at the moment and we asked to sit by a window and she told us we would have to sit where she brought us. Ya just know I immediately asked for a manager. The manager came over and it just so happened that it was the very lovely supervisor who I had spoken to on the phone who convinced me to come in the first place. She tried to pay for our meal and I refused. Then she gave us a gift certificate for 2 to come back for all of the tours and dinner!! That is one person I will not soon forget. Ok everything else was GREAT from here on out. Our server was amazing and took great care of us. On Sunday's they only do what I call the buffet at your table menu. They have 3 meats and you get to pick 2 of them. So we picked the Pot Roast and the Broasted Chicken. The other choice that we opted out of was ham. Everything was wonderful but that chicken had to be some of the juiciest and most flavorful chicken I have eaten and I love some chicken. I forgot to say they bring out fresh baked bread and butter, an assortment of pickled items. And a bowl of ham and bean soup. All wonderful. For side dishes they had sage dressing, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy. I was not a big fan of their gravy but everything else was wonderful. Dinner came with a non alcoholic beverage and I got iced tea. No sweet tea just regular. Bummer. But their sun tea was so good I didnt even add any sugar and I drank probably 4 glasses. We got all that for like $18 per person. And that is all you can eat not that we could eat anymore than they brought the first time. How I managed to save room for dessert I don't know. But I did. She brought out a huge tray of desserts and I opted for pecan pie being the true southerner that I am. It was not bad. So as we go to check out I was browsing through their store and came across a sign that said all bread and bakery items half off. So they were selling thier breads and pies, cookies etc for 50% off. That explains why this one couple had like 10 pies on the counter. I recommend this place and we will be back for sure. Times have evolved and I cannot speak to how it used to be but even without the Amish their in the restaurant today I sure felt their presence and had a great time. So I would not let any of these negative reviews stop you from going. I grew up in a strict pentecostal home in the 70's and back then women couldn't wear pants, cut their hair or wear makeup and look them today they are like circus clowns in pants with men's haircuts. So if the pentecostals can change so can the Amish I guess. But I sure had a wonderful time today. We left and made the hour drive to see the sunset at the Michigan City IN Beach on Lake Michigan and it was wonderful and then headed over to the casino before the 3 hour drive home. Check those reviews out too. It was a great day out for sure. Had it not been for the teenagers I would have given this place a 5 star rating.
I must admit that the whole farm itself was very touristy and a bit on the pricey side but the meal I had was outstanding as we had their family style "Threshers Dinner" which consisted of: amishacres.com/threshers… Just read it here. I don't feel like typing it all out. Everything was delicious but the things that really, really pleased my palate was: the ham and bean soup, fried chicken, and the apple dumpling for dessert. They did a good job of recreating that "Amish-feel" throughout the farm.

This place gets 3 only because I like their food, and in this instance I'm referring to the KFC side only. The service here has been rather sub par, twice I have gone and I kid you not, the girl at the register has told me "we might not have enough chicken, let me check." For the 16pc I get it, that's a lot of chicken, for a 3pc, two hours before closing, it does not make sense that KFC would be utterly out of chicken. The wait has been 20 minutes both times, and with that 16pc I got a meal and even having waited 20 mins, they still forgot the 2 large Cole slaws I got with it. My husband and I are good sports, but for all intents and purposes: go ready to wait, and don't leave the counter till you have visually confirmed all your items are correct.
