True BBQ & Whiskey Bar Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

I have only been to True BBQ twice, but it's already snagged its place as my favorite restaurant in the Lansing/Munster area. The decor is gorgeous. Half of the area is a whiskey bar, which has bright coloring with dark trim and dimmed lights, making it look cozy and chic. The other half is the dining area, which has huge ceilings and dark wood furniture. There's also an outside dining area that has fire pits, which I hope to sit there at some point in the future. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Our waiter was always able to answer our questions, and he came back often enough that we felt well taken care of, but not so much that we were annoyed. It also turned out he'd been to the same concert as me (as he noticed my shirt), so he made great small talk too. My favorite drink here is the New Fashioned, which features a cherry whiskey. It's smooth and has great flavors. When you sit down at your table, there is a complimentary plate of pickles and potato chips. The chips are house made and have really good seasoning on them. And, well, who doesn't love pickles? It's a nice touch. For an appetizer, we ordered the Seared Alligator, which comes with a cactus aioli to dip ($15). It's fried, not so much seared, but it is still delicious. It comes plated on a black slate, with the bright pink sauce in an elegant swirl. The meat was tender and juicy, and the sauce really worked well. I loved the aioli, it was sweet with just a little bite to it, and I wish I could just buy a bottle of it, if I'm being honest. For dinner, I have had two different dishes, and both were really good. The first is the Brisket dinner, which comes with cornbread, coleslaw or french fries ($17). I paid a little extra, and got the White Cheddar Mac N Cheese ($5). The brisket came with three sauces, mild, spicy, and raspberry. The raspberry was my favorite by leaps and bounds, it's sweet with just a little bit of spice, and almost no heat. The meat, which is smoked on cherry and oak, was mouthwatering. It just fell apart, and I didn't even need a knife to cut it. That's a damn good brisket. The mac was alright, but was WAY too loose. It was like eating cheesy noodle soup. But the flavors were there, so I give it benefit of the doubt that I didn't get a standard batch. The second entree that I've tried is the Brisket Burger ($14). The patty itself is made of chopped up brisket meat, and it's topped with pulled pork, blackberry dijon, white cheddar cheese, and lettuce. It also comes with slaw and fries. This patty is SO GOOD. I don't order burgers a lot because I don't care for ground beef. I love brisket though, so this was perfect. It was flavorful and smokey, though it came with a bit too much sauce on it for my liking. And then there's dessert. The first time I was here I tried the Caramel Bourbon Mascarpone Napoleon ($8). It's an alright plate. It mostly just tasted sweet. It was hard to pick out individual flavors other than caramel, but it wasn't bad by any means. However, it pales in comparison to the best dessert I've ever had, the Brulee of Pineapple with a Basil Gelato ($8). It's a ring of pineapple which is bruleed with sugar, like a creme brulee would be. It's topped with a basil gelato that is so good. I was worried, since basil is such a bold flavor, but it's really subtle, and is way more on the "sweet" side than the "herb" side. There's also a drizzle of what I believe to be raspberry coulis, which cuts through the sweetness nicely. I will order this dessert each time I come here, I promise you that. A lot of these reviews mention cost, but honestly they're pretty standard BBQ prices when you're going to a sit down, non-chain restaurant. If you want to pay $9 and get a bucket of rib pieces with white bread and slaw, go to Kenny's or Harold's or any other fast chain. If you want to have a grown-up, actual dining experience with waiters, an extensive whiskey menu, a decor that boasts chandeliers, and a non-chocolate dessert that'll knock your socks off? Come to True and bring your friends, because you won't be sorry.

Red Blood Dripping and Smoked Fried Chicken! I specifically went to this restaurant because I heard how good the food was. I was excited to know that a restaurant that I had passed by on several occasions actually had tasty food and great service. Well, the latter is true. The server was very nice, knowledgeable and accomodating. The ambience is great. Now to the food. I ordered the smoked, fried chicken. I was told the chicken was smoked first and then fried. This sounded delicious. I was salivating thinking about this dish. Then it came out, looking and smelling awesome. I tore into the drumstick, only to see RED BLOOD dripping on my white plate. COMPLETELY UNDONE. Of course the manager was very apologetic and told us they are cooking us another order. Well cooked it was. My chicken breast was so overcooked, the meat was so dry that I had to drink water to get the first bite down. I guess, they figured if smoking and frying did not make it done, they would just over cook it. I did take them up on the offer for free dessert as I was still hungry since I could not eat the chicken. I wanted the owner to know about the experience, so I called the next day and was told that Tammy would call me back. Needless to say, no call from Tammy.

Finally tried True. The ambience was nice and my friends love it. I had a nice drink as did my hubby. Our bill at the end was really high compared to other places we go and have similar food/drink. You are paying more for the atmosphere here for sure. I wasn't that impressed with the food. It was okay but for the price point I have had better. At least I can say the place was clean, wait staff friendly and knowledgeable about their menu. I did love all the whiskey they had out there. I will come back to drink for sure, for BBQ? Not so much. Ps. I don't know much about Whiskey. So I must add that. Another reviewer said the whiskey menu was sad. I did like the drink I had and the drink menu looked nice but I'm sure that isn't hard to do. The other reviews about whiskey are most likely right.

Jillian was my server/bartender as I sat at the bar. They have an extensive whiskey list. I ordered the Mile High from the bourbon drinks section. Very nice! I was also given bbq chips and pickles to snack on before o ordered. I ordered the bbq seitan appetizer. So yummy!! wifi password true8940 Love this place. WILL DEFINITELY RETURN!

The food is ok. It's not good BBQ, but the sides are ok. You'll find better bbq at any gas station south of Kentucky. It's about even with Dickie's BBQ, but it's twice as much. The decor and ambience is good. The outdoor area is nice. Not sure why every wall was open to the outdoor area when every girl inside the restaurant was visibly shivering and begging for jackets. The Mac and cheese ball had bacon in it, not enough to taste good, but just a few specks so that all the vegetarians who ordered it ( no mention of bacon on the menu) could not eat it. The fried green tomatoes were desperately in need of salt. But all that pales in comparison to the shameful and terrible whiskey menu. A random collection of mislabeled, run of the mill, ridiculously overpriced pours. There was nothing in the place you can't find at a neighborhood store, and a 2 oz pour was about 1/3 to 1/4 of the bottle price. Bottom shelf, plastic cap whisked for $8, what a joke. Friday night at 9, and the place was 2/3 empty. That should tell you everything you need to know.

I'm starting to think the people of Northern Indiana have a poor sense of taste. I imagined this locations Yelp would be plastered with rave reviews. I'm glad I was brought here, and didn't see the reviews beforehand, because boy, y'all are wrong. This place is my new go-to for dinner and drinks. First of all, this place isn't that pricey. I ordered a half rack of some of the best baby back ribs, fries, chips and pickles, for the same amount I would have wastefully spent on some bullshit Applebee's. Frankly, if you're accustomed to McDonald's prices, you may think this is expensive. The decor is BEAUTIFUL. The outside has a beautiful fire pit, and they also offer live music. I can't wait to return with girlfriends to sit on the beautiful patio, enjoy a huge selection of whiskey, and listen to live music. Now, let's get to the meat and potatoes, because that's in fact what I ate. The ribs were amazing, and a half rack was more than enough with the side. The cornbread is huge, the coleslaw is huge, and the fry plate is huge. You aren't leaving this place hungry. They bring complimentary house made BBQ chips and sweet pickles to every table. I'm not a fan of sweet pickles in general, but mother of god, those chips. I could eat those chips every day. The ribs fall of the bone, and the sauce selection they bring to the table is awesome. The dessert is out of this world. As if I wasn't full enough, I thought I was going to need to be carted out of this place. We had the Pecan Pie and the Marscapone Neapolitan, and both were amazing. The Marscapone comes out like a mountain of pillows. The service is phenomenal. People are always around if you need anything, and an empty plate never hung out on our table longer than two minutes. They are on top of it. The management is very nice, and love our feedback. The Bar looks really nice and cozy. I'd love to have a drink there in the future, especially considering their great selection of whiskeys. Anyway, I'm still painfully full from dinner, and pleasantly so. The food is so, so good. I will be absolutely returning, and gladly announce that I will be a regular. I couldn't have asked for anything more, and I had a very enjoyable experience.

This place does a lot of things right. The owners own all of the Gelsosomo's/Bullpens, the Gino's Steak Houses, and the Jelly Pancake houses. So they're no strangers to restaurants. There are interesting appetizers here as well as great drinks and desserts. (Though prices are far from reasonable.) The main reason you go to a BBQ place, however, is to have BBQ. And the meat here is way more in line with a Dickie's BBQ than something truly special. Bombers just can't be beat. And the attitude True has espoused in their advertisements (along the lines of let's-show-these-NWI-rubes-what-dining-in-Chicago-is-like) leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Kinda like their subpar brisket!

Update on this place with a caveat of a gift certificate from management for the previous review. Yes, we did receive a gift certificate which basically comped our meals however, the service and in my opinion the food has improved quite a bit since my visit a couple months back. First of all, the service was better. Perhaps because we sat in the dining area instead of the bar? Still, big time improvement. I had the brisket burger, awesome. HUGE too, I expected chopped up brisket on a bun but got a big beefy patty in there too. Way more than enough for the average appetite. Hurray for BBQ sauce options too. They had a pumpkin BBQ sauce, I was reluctant at first but, tried it anyway and even though I personally didn't love it, my wife and I thought the creativity of it was awesome. My wife had the Pulled Pork Macaroni and Cheese. She liked the taste but said there was a lot of oil that pooled at the bottom. I tried some, liked it but totally agree with the oiliness :/ The munchkin had a kids hamburger, loved it an was pretty stoked about the dessert that comes with it. (And every kids menu item) The dining room was clean and well spaced out. Plenty of seating and big enough for moving tables around for larger parties also. I want to check out the outdoor dining, there's some fire pits out there for warmth which look cool. All in all, there seem to have been a lot of positive changes since first opening. I'll chalk up the oily Mac to an oops in the kitchen and maybe not enough roux to keep the oil suspended.

I was in town for a conference and ten of us decided to try this place. They accommodated our large party with little to no wait and the service was great! They have a a bar and restaurant area and an outdoor patio with a fire pit! Great atmosphere, amazing food and strong drinks. What a great find during my stay..I will definitely be returning!

All right, it was a free meal, during a presentation. Appetizers of the wings were great, and in the in house pickles a delight. The brisket with mash potatoes, a perfect match. The Brisket was ever so tender. I love the non fancied up mash. The fuzzy navels came in bell jar mugs- nice size for the evening. No room for dessert. The prices are high, but it might be sticker shock-for I do not get out of my cave much these days. The staff extremely nice and helpful. I tried to tip the waitress, for at presentations, people are not the nicest. She said she was well taken care of for the group, and my offer was better than any tip.

This place is great if you have a ton of money and have no idea what good BBQ tastes like.

Great addition to northwest Indiana's dining options! We stopped in for an array of appetizers including catfish bites, hush puppies, jalapeno corn bread pudding and sliders. Patrick provided prompt and friendly service even though we were taking our time and waiting for an additional companion. He truly seemed to love the restaurant and food and want to guide us to great menu decisions...though I suspect we couldn't have gone wrong! The visit started off right with a sample of their homemade potato chips and house marinated bread & butter pickles. I could probably sit and eat those until I couldn't get out of the booth! I'm certainly glad I controlled myself enough to try all the appetizers. The catfish didn't taste dirty or fishy and the cherry bourbon sauce was a perfect complement. The hush puppies were a delightful twist on the average hush puppy. They tasted like they had potato and were served with a cream sauce. I'm not a hush puppy fan normally but really liked these. Each of us got a different slider (brisket, pulled pork and pork belly). My selection was pork belly. It was served with a thin slice of smoked gouda. It was the rich fatty salty delight I'd expect from a well made pork belly slider! Finally, our most dessert-like choice was the jalapeno cornbread pudding served in a pool of cilantro cream and topped with sour cream. A delightful end though the sour cream was probably not needed, it still went well together! It's important to note that they do serve their Moscow mule in a copper mug and the ginger beer was nice and spicy...bonus!

I can imagine if you're a drinker this place would be pretty amazing. Their menu for alcholic beverages is quite extensive. However. I do not drink. The menu is pricey for what is offered but we had a girl's night out and the service was really pretty cool. Our waitress was on it and quite patient with a group of chatty girls who couldn't decide what we wanted to eat. The wait staff was pretty awesome. My glass of water was constantly replenished. Even much later when we were just talking and clearly done eating. Never did we feel pushed out. They also offer hot hand towels after your meal is complete... I really love that more than I thought I would. AND the bathrooms were clean. Bonus. =]

The restaurant was very spacious. However they had a wall opened to the outside and I was SO HOT bc of the humidity! We had a party of 12 and the service was great I ordered the loaded fries which fed all of us. I had the BBC chicken sandwich with the Gouda cheese-the chicken was a little dry. It came with a big plate of fries which i should have substituted.they also have home made chips and pickles as an appetizer which are really good. So im taking a star off for the humidity and for the dry chicken. ..

Great atmosphere. Smoked meats were good, not great. The brisket was not very tender, but had nice smokey flavor. Pork shoulder was good (like I stated not great). The meats were kinda cold when brought out. As if they had been sitting a while. That is what possibly took away from the food. The sides were a different story. The collard greens were almost inedible. It had this bitter nasty taste. I had to sip water every other bite. The red beans & rice were very different. Not what I'm use to. Flavor that didn't taste good. The seared alligator was mediocre. More like fried alligator. The cactus aioli was fun to try. Very different. Kind of complimented the gator. Service was good as well.

Server:Patrick First off let me say I visited this place when it was Charley Horse...this place is better. I'm a person that lives for BBQ. I love to BBQ when weather permitting. The Pork Belly Sliders we're AWESOME. The complimentary pickles were soooooo delicious. I decided on the full baby back for my meal and they were really tender. My guy ordered the Cajun Rib Eye and it was yummy. We also shared the Andouille Sausage and Ancho Peppers for an Appetizer and it was really good. This place is a gem for the area. Can't wait to enjoy the patio this summer. Patrick our server was awesome. Very knowledgeable about the food and served with a smile. Thumbs up!!! I will be back!

My husband and I decided to venture out to Munster specifically to try this place. We had heard from a few friends that this was THE bbq place to go to now, so we figured we would try it out. The atmosphere is beautiful - chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, candles on the table, pillows on the booth seats. Very swanky and high rent. Of course, now we both feel out of place (thinking this was a bbq joint, we both came in jeans and casual tops...). Our server Jenna was extremely attentive and kept on top of everything throughout the night. After looking over the menu, I was honestly a little bit thrown off by the prices. Seemed a little high to me, but I kept an open mind. I ordered the brisket, while my other half got a full slab of ribs. My brisket was soggy and pretty much tasteless, and the husband's ribs were the smallest full slab I had ever seen. Also, for a place with such stunning decor, why would you serve your ribs on a wet cutting board? Hmmm... All in all, we probably wouldn't go back, unless it was just to meet up for a quick drink with friends in the area (the whiskey and beer list looked pretty promising).

Hello,FOOD SNOB here. If anybody out there pays any attention to my reviews, I usually do not rate franchises. But I thought I would break tradition this one time. Not too bad for a chain restaurant. The inside is really nice and modern. Service was excellent. I had the Duck Slider and Pork Belly Slider. It was quite good. Tried the Brisket and Ribs. About what I expected. Good but not exceptional. The only bad thing was the Collard Greens. So SALTY I could not even eat them. Nice Bar area. Nice place to go with a group.

Beautiful restaurant with great drinks but, unfortunately, the food did not seem to be getting across what type of place they really are. I got the pork shoulder and was really disappointed by the greasy and fatty piece of meat. Others in the group were equally disappointed by their main dishes. The appetizers of gator and various other things were wonderful, but the food really did hurt my review. If anything, get the apps and drinks and surround yourself in a truly beautiful restaurant, but save the money and don't go towards their BBQ dishes. In addition, one should know that this is an expensive place, so prepare to spend a pretty penny.

I'm shocked at the low ratings here. I needed to meet a friend near the hospital and this was the only option for us. I was really nervous as I read the 1 and 2 star reviews while I waited on him. I apologized for picking this place before he even sat down. Turns out this was a fantastic pick! The bar. Wow! I was pounding the amazing drinks like an alcoholic. I normally don't drink like that on a work night but I couldn't help myself here. St. Germaine. Enough said. The bartender also made a wicked Moscow mule. I can't wait to drink a Sunday fun day away here. The real star is whiskey. An entire page of different whiskey is offered. I've never been a fan though. We weren't planning on eating but did end up ordering the tuna. It was prepared perfectly! I had a tiny bite of the Mac and cheese too. Delicious! I will say that there are very few healthy options on the menu. It's a BBQ place though, so I can't really fault them for that. We were there on a Thursday night and it was packed. I grabbed the last seat in the bar area. The service was great all night. They were on top of everything. I have already told other friends that live in the area we need to head back here. I didn't expect to walk away loving it. Very impressed so far!

The staff was great! Had the pulled pork BBQ seitan sandwich and it was good. Probably would go with the salmon if I come back as it was great!! The spicy BBQ was my favorite. We had the chocolate cake and the ice cream was soooo good!

Girls night dinner last night. Incredible food. I had the smoked turkey sandwich with coleslaw & a side salad. We also had the fried green tomato appetizer & the Mac-n-cheese ball. Highly recommended all around. The only thing that kept this review from being a 5, was the waitress was a bit inattentive.

I've been here three times, each with a group. The decor is nice for the area and the patio looks great. The pickles they give you are delicious, but aside from that the food is unimpressive at best. Service was fine, but the servers I get always seem new. Despite the food, I'll still probably be back for a drink on the patio.

Very good. Their homemade bbq sauces are worth the visit by themselves. I had baby back ribs and my wife had Mac n cheese with pulled pork. Very happy and looking forward to going back!

After driving by for several weeks as they put the finishing touches on True BBQ and Whiskey, I noticed the parking lot was completely full today. Instead of grabbing some Chinese on my way home, I decided to give it a try. Little did I know, it was an invite-only soft opening. Whoopsie! But the hostesses were super nice and didn't give me the hairy eyeball. I guess they will officially open this Wednesday. I'll definitely be back to check out the menu and whiskey selection. The interior was nice and the FOH staff seemed on the ball. Looking forward to getting to know you, True.

This place was a little more upscale than we were anticipating. Prices were a bit higher than we were thinking but the food was really good. I had the mac and cheese......sounds plain but WOW (this is mac and cheese with bacon and pulled pork ) plus they bring you enough for 3 meals and it is very rich and filling. We will go again.

It was a mixed bag for us.... A friend highly recommended the place, knowing I love BBQ, and claiming the food was way better than Wagners or Galveston, my 2 favorite rib places. Our server, Jenna was very nice and attentive, our food was brought out very quickly and our drinks never went empty. I had the ribs which is the smallest "full slab" I've ever seen, fairly bland and the cornbread which, while a huge size, was also bland and served with rock hard frozen butter. My wife had the beef brisket which was also tasteless without sauce and fries. The mild sauce was good but nothing to get excited about. The Raspberry sauce was very gross and the "monthly" was a "cappuccino" BBQ was also gross. Once covered in mild the meats were ok, but for a $50 tab, I really expected a lot more food quality. The place is gorgeous and they had a good whiskey and craft beer menu, though we didn't have drinks. If you like the upscale swanky atmosphere and premium drinks, check it out, if you want premium BBQ, go somewhere else.

I was so excited to go to this restaurant we drove 45 minutes they bring you chips and pickles to the table are chips had hair in them me and my buddy each ordered the trio 30 dollars a pop are girls each ordered pasta dishes and a couple appetizers and a side of corn bread which smelled of cat urine even the waitress smelled it and agreed it smelled like cat urine the food was mediocre and for all our troubles in the cornbread spelling that urine they took it off our bill and gave the four of us one scoop of ice cream two pairs that are hard as a rock and a piece of fudge whoever owns this restaurant is I take ownership If you're going to charge these prices need to bring your A game.

True BBQ couldn't be further from the truth. I should have been wary when the server recommended the pasta as her favorite dish. The atmosphere was beautiful; however, I would rather sacrifice the beauty and austerity for flavor. This was one of THE worst dining experiences I've had in my life. We ordered the jalapeño cornbread as an appetizer. It was not edible!!! Who makes cornbread with white bread??? My husband ordered the brisket. It was moist, but lacked flavor. The sweet potato fries were soggy. I ordered the pulled chicken sandwich. It was dry, and the sandwich was predominantly bread. They provided about 1.5 oz of meat. The salty chips were the best part of the meal. The drink was mostly ice, yet strong at the same time. I will but be coming back nor would I recommend this place!!!

We originally came to the area for Three Floyd's, but left there because of the insanely long wait. This was a great spot to jump into! We sat at the bar and the experience was fantastic! David, our server/bartender, was wonderful and offered some great recommendations! The dry rubs were amazing, and the BBQ chips and pickles they provide were wonderful! For an A+ experience, I'd recommend either giving them a few months or going on off hours. It looks like most people providing bad reviews went at peak hours, and it typically takes a restaurant a couple of months to figure out how to prepare great food quickly in a large quantity. The bar area has much better ambiance than the regular restaurant area, as well. Both include regular tables, so I think the bar is worth it! Lastly, if you're in for the ultimate experience, ask bartender David what he recommends... Though the New Fashioned with Traverse City Whiskey is absolutely amazing!

Delicious food...bbq is amazing. Sauces are ridiculously good. Especially bourbon brown sugar sauce. Baby back ribs and brisket are cooked to perfection. The cornbread is huge and savory if you like it on the sweeter side that won't be what you find. I think some honey butter would do them wonders for their corn bread. The sauteed greens are in garlic and they're very fresh and crunchy. My friend ordered the filet mignon and I would say that steak preparation is not their specialty so stick with what they do well. The service was amazing and we will definitely be going back. Unfortunately the only photo I took was of the corn bread pudding which was very tasty!

This was the absolute worst dining experience I have ever had!!! My boyfriend and I ventured out to Munster on a Monday evening to have Bombers BBQ (they are our favorite!) unfortunately they are closed on Mondays. So since we had bbq in mind, and we were already in the area, we thought we would try True BBQ & Whiskey Bar. WORST idea EVER! We sat down and the waitress was very pushy about wanting our drink order. We finally ordered our drinks and we also ordered an appetizer....the catfish bites. They were not fried long enough and were very soft and mushy. While we were eating our appetizer the waitress was still being pushy and came back 4 or five times within a 20 minute period to find out if we were ready to order. We finally ordered the trip platter to share, which consisted of pulled pork, brisket, and ribs. The pulled pork was extremely dry. The brisket was also extremely dry, and flavorless, and the ribs were the same way plus tougher than a brick. During the time that we got our entree, the waitress came back frequently to find out if we were done, and if we wanted dessert. We ended the night with 2 shots of Whiskey, which in my opinion was the best part of the entire meal, and walked out of there spending $87. When I think of bbq, I think of a place that is warm and welcome, and that you can wear jeans and a shirt into, not a place that has chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, and pillows in their booths, and that you have to wear your Sunday best to. The boyfriend and I will continue to stay loyal to Bombers...you can't go wrong there!

Inattentive waiter, so-so food, and gross. We sit down and immediately the waiter just had a poor attitude with us. Very pushy and seemed upset when we were not getting alcohol. The food did come very quick but was just so-so. The ribs were dry and tough. The beef brisket wasn't bad but defiantly not worth the money. To end the night they brought out warm rags (nice idea), however they were dirty!!. The waiter claimed they where soak in lemon juice, but there were green and black stains on on all the rags and they where just slightly warm. It was like they just rinsed them in warm water from the last guest and brought them out to us. The dirty rags were the final stray not to mention it took longer to get the bill then it did for our food to come. Don't waste your time or money here. Go to Bombers BBQ over on Ridge Road. Half the price and much better food.

Took a customer for lunch. We were seated in the bar. The service was very good. I can't comment on his food other than he had a sampler that he seemed to enjoy and was taking leftovers home. I thought the chops and pickles were excellent. I had the brisket sandwich. It had a very good portion of meat. I did find it dry but the sauce saved it. I used the hot sauce and did enjoy it. The fries and coleslaw were both good. Overall, a decent lunch but somewhat expensive for only decent.

It was my first time being here. The staff was very friendly. Our waitress, Becca, was great. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and I loved it, although I wish it had more of the crunchy onions. I also think the bread to pork ratio was a bit off (too much bread) so I ate it open face. The sweet potato fries were a hit, except they need to have honey as a condiment option for them! As far as their BBQ sauces go: the raspberry was killer. So good. Beer: Goose Island Matilda. Beer con: steep price for it being on draft. Also $2 sub if you don't want sweet potato fries (little outrageous for a sub price). 3 stars for said price reasons. I'll be back, but not frequently.

Lamb ribs were good... Their bbq chicken wings is a different take on your average fried buffalo wings. Cocktails are awesone. Ambiance is a touch of classic with a modern twist. It was my first time. Service is very accommodating. The outdoor patio complete with 2 wraparound tables with fire pit is a must for friendly gathering or family outing. Definitely going back.

so far, I've only tried the St. Louis and baby back ribs. they are outstanding. great sauces, great service, and especially, a great value on Monday rib slabs. great whiskey selection, that I will most definitely dive into, when I have a designated driver with me. can't wait to bring the kids with me on my next visit, cause I wasn't able to finish both slabs of ribs I ordered.

My new favorite place for ribs, delish. And the macaroni and cheese is to die for. Nice atmosphere and friendly service too. Decent prices except the corn on the cob for $5, ridiculous

Good place to meet. BBQ was good. Not dry. You can select your BBQ sauce. The lemon shakeup , raspberry was good. We were not sold on the Mac n cheese. Wasn't like home. The corn bread was good. Sweet butter on side if you like. Cole slaw was good. The pulled pork sandwich was good too. Chicken was very moist.

Came back to try it again with a complimentary gift card that was sent after my first review. Pork shoulder was very good. The surf and turf penne pasta was also very good. Food came very quickly. Server was very attentive. This is not traditional bbq like Smoque or Bombers but the food was very good.

Delicious wood smoked BBQ! Not for sauce junkies! Good BBQ does not require any sauce whatsoever! They do provide you with four separate options to season your meat with if you so desire; I think mixing the hot with the raspberry appealed to my palate best. I am very much reluctant to order ribs from anywhere, having spent some quality teenage time working for Roll'n Ribs in E.C.(long gone now). Perfect way to ruin a person for life; tree surgeon opens rib dive that serves the best smoked BBQ around. Sauce wasn't anything special(Masterpiece doctored with some extra molasses and spices I think). Meat was great straight out of the smoker, not much flavor loss after freezing and steaming to reheat.....dipped in sauce didn't do it justice though.....unless you then broiled it until glazed. Those memories specifically prevent me from ordering ribs because I'm usually very disappointed. Not at TRUE! Baby-backs so well smoked and seasoned no need to dip in anything! Can't wait to return to try the St. Louis! For starters I tried the 'gator.....hoping it would be better than the stuff you find at Pierogi Fest! Not at all like any carny food I've ever had! Lightly breaded, tender and juicy meat inside. Others at table sampled different appetizers and we shared between our plates generously; andouille sausage worthy of the price, and catfish nuggets that make me rethink my stance on being opposed to eating catfish! I don't drink so I cannot comment on the various options for alcoholic refreshment available, but my water glass was never empty...nor was there any shortage of lemon wedges for my beverage...I drink lots of water while dining. Our server, Geneva, who was very busy with several tables, never missed a beat. Pleasant without seeming insincere, always willing to honor our requests, however insignificant.....wet-naps, etc...Very impressed with wait staff(table was cleared appropriately without feeling like we were being hovered around) Dessert was decadent! I had the flour-less chocolate cake, pretty much put me in a sugar-induced coma! Could have gotten a DUI driving home high on confection! Decor is bold, quite different from how it looked under previous existence. Looking forward to dining on the patio when the weather permits, it also looks very different from what I remember it did last year. If you know what good quality BBQ is(without sauce smothering), then you will love TRUE. Slaw is great change of pace from what is being served elsewhere in the region. Chips are tasty and crisp! Sat with a group of twelve and everyone came away with positive vibes and fond memories of our meal! Check it out, good food if you are willing to pay a little extra for authentic smoked BBQ.

Went for lunch today. Stacy took care of us first on the outside patio. She was awesome and very knowledgeable. We went inside for lunch and the lovely Nadia was amazing. Drinks were great, her suggestions were right on. Cute spot loved the ambience. Only complaint is no lunch menu. We'll be back.

The baby back ribs live up to this place's name "True" BBQ. My waitress Steph made me her own sauce which was awesome but she keeps it a secret. Great food and a good beer selection too for a whiskey place.

Boss took me and the crew here last weekend for lunch. Complimentary pickle chips and potato chips were a really nice touch. BUT BE WARNED! We ate our weight in those darned potato chips and then there were fries served with the sandwich that we didn't eat because we were such piggies. Personally had the pulled chicken, which was very good. Attentive and friendly team-based service. This is a great place.

This place is so amazingly on point that it is RIDICULOUS!! First of all, the decor is totally cool and chic! Secondly, the staff is all extremely nice! Thirdly, the outdoor seating with the Firepits is off the chain awesome! And lastly, the FOOD IS DELICIOUS!! This gorgeous establishment has very unique food with somewhat of a southern twist! BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!!!! Steph was an amazing server!!

Wow. Very surprised on the reviews. We went here on Friday after work and we couldn't get in cause of the long wait at 3FB. Food was great. Smoked wings. Sliders. Slaw. Chips. BBQ sauces. Cornbread pudding. Mac n cheese. Two hearted ale. Service was great. Staff new a lot of details about menu and beers. Clean place. Hostess was very nice. Will go back soon.

True BBQ is not really like an authentic BBQ place but they have really good and really interesting food. Our server was very attentive and on top of everything. We didn't wait a long time for anything. There are a lot of different meat options but they had a vegan part of their menu too. My husband had the brisket and said it melted in his mouth. It is kind of pricey but it's a really trendy type place so I get it. They could use some drink specials but other than that, all around good.

Let me start by saying I am absolutely in love with this place and THANK YOU for bringing some class to NWI. If you are looking for a neighborhood BBQ joint to throw back some ribs and mid shelf whiskey, this is not it. This is a refined, upscale hipster/foodie BBQ grille and whiskey bar. Beautiful interior (though I could do without the odd music selection of 90-00's pop songs and boy bands) and outside seating features fireside tables. They are pricey, but well worth it. Our server, David, was attentive without being pushy. Of course there was some up sell tactics disguised as guidance, but that is to be expected in an establishment of this level. ...Previous reviews have mention that the staff was pushy and constantly checking up - um, yeah that's why they are there. Staff was in no way pushy or obtrusive. He did check back often, to make sure we were enjoying our experience. That's what waitstaff is supposed to do, and his witty banter and concern were reflected in his tip. And quite frankly if you paid these prices and had the local Applebee's service of one refill and here's your check, you'd be peeved. We started with a couple of "New Fashioned" ($12) cocktails- refreshing and delightful. Complimentary home made BBQ chips and pickles were brought to the table. Chips were a little dark but seasoning was great and the I ate almost all of the pickles :) As an appetizer we had the seared alligator with cactus aioli ($14). This was not what I expected when I think seared. The alligator was lightly breaded and appeared to be pan fried as opposed to seared, but regardless it was aaaamazing! Toothy but not chewy, well seasoned and the aioli (while a very unnatural shade of hot pink) was delicious. Portion size was decent, enough for two and we took some home. The entrees we ordered were Ditalini; pasta, smoked duck, cherry tomatoes, fried corn, smoked bacon, greens, garlic roasted in extra virgin olive oil, topped with goat cheese ($17) and Beef Brisket 12oz smoked 14 hours ($17). The ditalini was absolutely fantastic. It wasn't greasy and swimming in olive oil, duck was perfect. The brisket was melt in your mouth tender and lightly seasoned. Too often the smoke taste and rub are overwhelming and mask true flavor, not here. Faint smoke flavor and light seasoning allow the beef to shine in the spotlight. As a side we had their white cheddar mac n cheese. The flavor was great, however it was way too loose and that was disappointing. Again portion sizes were plentiful, rare for a restaurant at this level. Dessert was a bourbon caramel marscapone napoleon ($8), which was pretty big. It was well constructed and sauce was quite tasty. We also had my new favorite dessert, brulee of pineapple with basil gelato ($8). Mother of all things holy, this dish alone is worth the trip. All in all, A hefty tab but a perfect evening. Will I have three courses every week? No, that's out of my income bracket lol and I fear that will be the case for this location. I will continue to return as much as I can to support this fantastic establishment. I encourage you all to try it, even if it's just apps and dessert, you will be happy you did.

By the looks of the menu, I thought this would be a very nice place to eat but there was nothing impressive about it. I tried the BBQ Trio with a side of Mac & Cheese. I've eaten a lot BBQ in my day and this was definitely sub par. The meat was cooked perfectly but it was lacking in flavor. The pulled pork was tender and juicy, the brisket does not instantly crumble apart like some overcooked briskets, and the ribs were not fall off the bone (they're not supposed to fall apart in your hand) but the bones came out cleanly and easily with a gentle pull. Unfortunately, the meat did not taste much like real BBQ, but rather that was wrapped in foil and cooked in the oven. They claim that the meat is smoked in oak and apple (or maybe cherry) wood, but there was hardly a hint of smokiness at all. In the Midwest, I expected the meat to have some sort of BBQ rub, but there was very little flavor of any spices on the meat itself. As for the macaroni, I would have preferred Easy Mac over this. The sauce was very watery and runny instead of creamy. The flavor also seemed to be watered down. All I could taste were noodles, water, and butter. I am glad it came with the trio rather than $7 as an extra side. The sauces are not too bad. They are your typical tomato based sauces without much of a vinegar taste to them. The mild sauce is your traditional sauce not unlike what you could buy bottled at the store. The spicy sauce seems to be the mild sauce with chile pepper added to it for a little bit of a kick. It is not that spicy but the heat is noticeable. I was also given two fruit flavored sauces that actually tasted better than I imagined they would. The blueberry sauce tasted better than the raspberry sauce. They were too fruity for my taste but they seemed to pair better with the pulled pork. It was nice to be able to sample each of the sauces, but I unfortunately only liked the mild sauce enough to put on my meat and the one cup I was given was not enough for the entire trio. Overall, True was very underwhelming. It was similar to eating good BBQ when you have a cold and can't taste much. The prices were about what I'd expect for a good BBQ spot, but there's a better place around the corner on Ridge Rd.

Was here last night for dinner with a group on the patio. Beautiful inside and great waiter. But the food was terrible. I could barely eat mine. I got the smoked 1/2 chicken. Barely any chicken and the skin was burnt. Very tasteless. The potatoes were good. The corn brisket soup was also very hard to eat. Not good at all. They also did not give enough barbecue sauce. I had to keep asking for more which took a while because our server was busy with other tables. Server was great.. Very nice but I will not be back. Many other BBQ places to choose from where the food is always delicious and smothered in BBQ.

First off the decor was nice, the restaurant was clean and we were seated and settled in promptly. But of course that's not what you check a yelp review for...the service was good all around, and Patrick was one of the most attentive and friendly servers I've ever encountered. Now for the food, the chips & pickles they bring out are quite tasty. I ordered the Pulled pork Mac & cheese which was amazing !!! The hubby had shaved brisket and loved it. We got the flour-less chocolate cake for dessert that was also delicious.

A power outage last Friday changed our plans and we ended up at Tru for first time. We live close by and the trip was worth it! The complimentary smoked potato chips were awesome! We split the brisket dinner and something we never tried before, smoked chicken wings-fantastic!! The 4 sauces that were presented to us were all very good. Ambiance is excellent. We will be back, hopefully not because the power is out

This is my first visit to True BBQ & Whiskey Bar. I was pleased with the atmosphere. The environment is a large part of the experience. It was not what I expected of a restaurant located next to a Walgreens. But on with the review. We ordered the catfish bites for an appetizer. They were fresh. There was not an overage of breading, which can be typical of catfish nuggets. They were presented well on a bed of green with a whiskey like raspberry sauce. I ordered the brisket with red beans and rice and the white cheddar mac and cheese, and my partner ordered the chicken with corn on the cob. Upon first glance, my brisket looked like a fatty pot roast. I kept an opened mind as I have often heard that fat adds flavor. The mac and cheese was tasty but nothing to write home about. The red beans and rice were delicious! There was a smoked flavor that was consistent in every bite. The chicken was tender and fall off the bone (oh no...somebody tell Texas Roadhouse that another establishment has a fall off the bone item). But back to the brisket. It was also tender but after a few bites (with and without the spread of BBQ sauce choices) it was really nothing more than a pot roast cut in strips. It was too fatty to really enjoy. Perhaps that is to be expected of brisket? It was not what I expected. I was shocked that cornbread was a side item. Since it was my partner's birthday, he received a raspberry icee like dessert. It was ok. The service was excellent.

I'll start with 3 important facts. #1 I had True delivered to my house! Anyone living in unincorporated Dyer/St. John area will appreciate this because no one delivers out here. #2 I'm from the south suburbs. Growing up in Illinois there is a bbq place in every corner -so it better be good. #3 I didn't order using my name -I may be a bit partial to these guys - expecially knowing everything they do for the community - so I had my boy friend order. We got baby back ribs, white cheddar mac and cheese, pork belly beans, surf and turf pasta & flour less chocolate cake. Ribs were outstanding. I think people forget this is a smoke house. The ribs had so much meat and a great smokey flavor. They were great without sauce and great with. The mac and cheese was good. We both would have liked a add in option like crab meat or something. Pork belly beans had a great flavor but not crazy about the texture. Flour less chocolate cake was the best I ever had. We will definitely order again!

The place has a beautiful bar, an exhaustive drink menu, and many weekend nights live entertainment. The outdoor area is gorgeous with some tables with fire pit in the middle. I think this is a nice spot for drinks/appetizers, especially if you can utilize the outdoor area. The service is great. The actual entrees are just okay. For the price they are charging, they need to deliver a lot more. For each dish I had, I Just thought something was missing that could elevate the dish. A different seasoning, or a different textural element, like a crunchy or a smooth flavor element. The BBQ sauce sampler was one of my biggest disappointments. The 3 sauces were nearly identical in texture/consistency. One tasted like it was straight out of Sweet Baby Ray's bottle. The spicy one hardly was spicy at all. I am a sauce girl and would've loved to see some featuring more of vinegar, North Carolina style, sauce, and for the spicy one to really have some heat. I really think my biggest issue with this place is that it oversells itself. The price point and atmosphere has you expecting a tremendous experience when what you get isn't much more than what you'd get at Dickey's. I would even say some of the dishes were good, but the expectation was that they'd be exceptional. When expectations and realities are this divergent, you get 2 stars from me.

So we went back on a week night and the service has much improved. I ordered ribs and they were pretty good. I like the selection of BBQ sauces and portions were reasonable. We had a very nice experience and look forward to come here in the future.

What a happy accident that led us here! We were treated like absolute crap at a brewery that shall not be named, and we decided to spend our money elsewhere. We had seen True on our way to the brewery, and decided to go back. We were immediately impressed by the host, who was professional and very very nice, and we were taken aback by the decor! We live about 45 min-1hr from True, and my husband and I both said that this place looked like something you would find Downtown Chicago! I believe we had Kelly as a server (I'm so horrible with names!) and she was spectacular! We received service that you would find at a 5-star restaurant! We started with the duck rolls, shared the trio for dinner, and then I had s'mores for dessert (when in Rome!). I loved the raspberry bbq sauce and my husband loved it mixed with the mild bbq sauce. We left full and happy, and ready to go back! Thank you so much for the wonderful service and the delicious food!!!

I came here for lunch today. The decor and ambiance is gorgeous and they have a very friendly and attentive staff. As far as the food is concerned, it was average at best. Whoever wrote the menu did a wonderful job on the descriptions and maybe that's why I expected more. I'll probably just go there for drinks, but I gotta say no on the food. FYI...let me recommend you eliminate using iceberg lettuce for lunch/dinner salads, especially with the prices you're charging.

Food was great. Boyfriend ordered the baby back ribs, they just came out of the smoker and he said they were the best ribs he's ever had. They give you a sampler of 4 different sauces, the raspberry BBQ was my favorite. I ordered the pulled pork Mac n cheese and all I can say is ...AMAZING. Our service was great and Rebecca was a great waitress. Outside area is really nice, especially the fire pit. Only thing I didn't like was the prices...$12 for a martini?!?! Are we in chicago or NWI?

Went back because friend performing there and thought we'd give 2nd chance since first time they had just opened. Our server was very friendly and caring (she knew I was interested in seeing performer later so she scoped out bar area for me). Food was way better this time! I ordered pork shoulder and it was very moist! Hurrah! I used the spicy bbq sauce but the mild and raspberry infused one were good too. They had a spiced Vanilla one too but I think this one may be tasty on say fried ice cream? Good flavor but too dessert-like. I love their sweet potato fries! Big portion! I took half meal home. Hubby ordered brisket sandwich, he didn't say much about it but he did eat most of it and rated it a 7 out of 1-10 scale. I enjoyed potato chips and pickle slices they give you at beginning too. Place was packed, good sign! I will be back! **bar service later great & friendly & love beer selection!

Well.. It's pretty inside and the staff is decent. The food is subpar! They bring out burnt chips and and some pretty decent pickles as a welcome. We ordered the andouille sausage for an app, I was severely disappointed. The sausage was super over powerful seasoned while the rest of the items were dull and flavorless. I the ordered the pulled pork sandwich, my bun was hard and my fries were way undercooked and gross. Save your money and go to Bombers were they serve quality BBQ every time (they are just right down street).

My wife wanted to try this place as it was a new restaurant in the area. I went in with an open mind. While the place is nice inside, the food left a lot to be desired. I had ordered a pulled pork sandwich at a BAR B QUE place. The sandwich came with smoked Gouda ok, a apricot sauce, not bar b que, and fried Vidalia onions. Seemed good. What stood out was the apricot sauce. It overpowered everything on the sandwich. I tried the pork plain and there was not much smokey flavor to it. Kinda blah. The sandwich itself was very greasy, not good. This entree comes with sweet potato fries. I do not like sweet potatoes so I asked for a comparably priced side and was told that any substitution would be a 2.00 up charge. Not cool. While eating my sandwich, I had to ask to try their bar b que sauces. What? I had to ask for sauces? This is supposed to be a Bar B Que place and had to ask for their sauces? Not cool. My wife had a salad with pulled chicken. While it was served nicely it was a 12.00 salad. Come on. It is a whiskey bar, but appears the only whiskeys are everything you can buy at the local liquor store. There are other better places in Munster for Bar B Que in munster and you should go there first. You will be amazed. It was our first and last trip to this new place.

Went here for a birthday celebration. The chips and pickles served as your seated were delicious. Some of the party order Matilda beer and they stated it was delicious, however $8 a glass is kinda steep. In our opinion. The group ordered Shaved Brisket sandwich and pulled pork sandwiches. We ordered sandwiches due the fact that the prices weren't lunch friendly. The interior of the facility doesnt match the BBQ sandwiches. As you walk in, it's like your walking into Pottery Barn. You don't have any options besides sweet potato fries unless you want to pay $2 for something else. My husband and I are not fans at all of sweet potato fries so we opted to pay the $2 for the Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese wasn't horrible but it did have a slight burnt taste, and you could clearly see the blackened crust. Would I come here again....... More than likely not. I was not impressed. Your definitely paying for the decor.

Overall, I'd go back. Brisket on the sandwich was good but they need to lose the rich sauce and extremely stem driven watercress. Good selection of whiskeys, Mac & Cheese was flavorful and not dry or too rich. Our service was good. Did I mention that the watercress was stemmy? It also was an accompaniment underneath the fried green tomatoes (good), please find another green to use or at least get rid of the stems. Lemon sorbet, very tasty.

Went here on a whim because three Floyd was so busy. Everything was amazing, free bbq chips and pickles, great drink selection, and incredibly savory bbq along with four great house sauces. Our server Corey was fast and very nice too!

  • Allie H.

Service was great but the food left me and the other two at my table wishing we had not gone. The chips served prior to the meal were overly salted and spiced leaving us to get refills on the water. The Grilled Chicken Sandwich smelled as if something had rotted. I could not eat it. The wings were bland and even adding the mild BBQ was to much sweet. The BBQ Pork was drenched in apricot glaze and adding BBQ sauce just gave you a sugar high. We tried it but will not be back. It is not TRUE BBQ.

It was a gorgeous day so we requested outdoor seating. I love the firepit area design but all of the other tables were in full sun with no umbrellas, which would have been a nice option. I think it was our waiter's first day on the job. He was very unsure of himself and nervous. Every question/request we had of him resulted in his having to confirm with management. My friend and I both ordered the craisin/goat cheese/walnut salad offered with duck confit, pulled chicken, or grilled chicken. We asked if we could have it with the pulled pork. That was acceptable. Unfortunately, my pulled pork was about 1/3 greasy fat. When I brought this to the waiter's attention, he froze and walked away. I was offered no apology or explanation - nor was I offered any discount. Other than that, the food was tasty but nothing special. This restaurant's location is prime and the decor is beautiful but I will not return or recomment. Too bad.

I ordered the St. Louis ribs with cornbread and collard greens. Being from the south I was so happy to try this place. The collards were too salty and garlicky. I couldn't eat them. The cornbread was dry. The ribs had no flavor although they said they used a dry rub. And they were dry even with the sauce you can add. It was first night so I'll try it again but if you want BBQ go to Tennessee

I came here with my boyfriend last week and we sat on the patio. Someone promptly came with water, however, we waited for 15 minutes for our server to come for our drink orders. There were 2 servers at the patio opening standing there and a group of 4 in the restaurant when we walked in. Because they were so inattentive, we ended up leaving and going to bombers and were guaranteed amazing food and good service there. True BBQ is WAY overpriced for Munster. Especially with how poor the service is. Not recommended.
