Wow, was I surprised by this place. I guess my expectations were low upon arrival (drive-thru, 99 cent taco special), so yes, I was prepared for some subpar mexican food. I ordered a chicken sope ($2.50) and two pork tacos (typically $1.89, but apparently all tacos are 99 cents right now). Chicken sope - perfectly heated thick corn shell - chewy, and just a little crispy. Typical toppings (lettuce, cheese, tomato, sour cream), but the chicken was clearly slow-cooked and shredded. That's a welcome relief from the gristly meat you get most taco stands. 9/10. Pork tacos - I worry when taco places have one "pork" taco. It can mean a lot of things. Here, it was darn close to "al pastor" which is my favorite type of taco. Marinated, bursting with spice and flavor, and the perfect balance of dry/tender. The pork tacos came with only cilantro and onion (as they should) and they were a steal for a buck. 9/10. The salsa verde gets an 8/10, the hot red gets a 7/10. Plenty of heat, but not much flavor. Oh, by the way, the man and woman working near the drive-thru were extremely friendly. I'm definitely coming back.

I just keep liking this place more and more. We went in last night to carryout their new charbroiled chicken family size dinner. For $14.99 you get enough chicken, tortillas, salsa and beans to feed 4 people. They are pretty stingy with the rice for some reason that I cannot understand but there is enough to feed 2-3. The chicken was super tasty and moist. I always add chips and salsa because theirs is phenomenal. Their green salsa is great too.

Not a good experience , I ordered a steak dinner and for the price I thought I was getting shirt steak and it wasnt it was sandwich steak that was tough and very chewy , and flavorless , service was not good , nice server but very slow and no one was in there, sorry but not very happy with this place , will not be going back, very poor quality food.

Taco Depot is a hidden gem in Merrillville, IN. While it is currently difficult to exit to get back to Rte. 30 East due to construction, it is totally worth the wait. The barbacoa tacos are delicious. Their food is simple, just onion & cilantro as toppings. The tacos are small so if u r a big eater, be sure to order several which isn't a bank breaker since they're only $0.99! Service isn't that great but the food & price makes up for it.

Food presentation was very poor. The quesadillas are not at all flavorful. The meat was not seasoned. Everything was a greasy mess.

The quality of the tacos can be a hit or miss depending on the cook, however, for .99 cents, its a great deal. This place lost a star because of their temperature system inside. It's either way too cold to dine in during the winter or too balmy in the summer. Today it was drafty! All in all, not a bad place to grab a quick bite for an excellent price!

GREAT tacos. .99 each. We did carry out. They were fast. We also got s ground beef nachos , we loved it too. Good value, good food.

Stopped at Taco Depot on the way from Chicago to Indianapolis. My wife had one fish and one veggie taco ($.99 each), my daughter had a kids quesadilla meal and I had a vegetarian burrito meal. All of the food was great. Chips and salsa were also very good. Service was outstanding! We make this trip many times during the year and will always plan on stopping at the Taco Depot along the way.

I really liked the vegetarian Big Boy burrito. It's pretty big and more than sufficient for lunch. It's probably like the same size as a Chipotle burrito. The flavor and all were good, except for the potatoes - I thought that tasted somewhat off in a burrito. Probably next time I'd order it without the potatoes. If I ever had the chance to try that I'm sure I'd move the rating up to 4 stars.

Yum! This place is great! We stayed three days near here and I had lunch twice at this local establishment and not just because they were close, but because it was very good! I tried the min burrito with pork and the tamale dinner, everything was authentic and excellent. I also had a cabrito taco which was also amazing, I would give it five stars but it isn't a five star restaurant. Thanks!

At the onset of a two day road trip we saw a guy on the side of the road, holding a sign advertising authentic Mexican food. This looked like a fantastic idea... And it was. (++) Yep, five stars. This place does not try to be anything more than a depot of tacos and for this humble honesty, I applaud them. Straight forward, simple, no frills, 99 cent tacos. (+) And there's a drive-through. (+) Cheese is extra; I don't mind. Carnitas, steak, chicken, pork, beef, or beans. The green sauce is preferred (we had mild when we ended up here again on the way home) and carnitas were my favorite. I also prefer onions and cilantro instead of lettuce and tomato, but they'll hit the spot either way. Definitely a better idea than Arby's, McDonalds, or other greasy fast food options. (+) Also, the service was unconventionally friendly, endearing even. Thanks for being good for something, Indiana.

One of the best, if not the best Mexican restaurant I've ate at in the nwi area. Their menu has all the Mexican staples, to go along with some creative and unique choices. A must try when in the area.

I have become a fan of Taco Depot; great chips and salsa and $.99 tacos. When first going into the restaurant, my expectations were not very high because it isn't anything really classy and the outside doesn't look very clean. However, once inside, you are immediately greeted and seated. However, the inside seems a little outdated and the restaurant is fairly new. I was immediately served chips and salsa. I think I was won over by the chips and salsa. They are homemade and they were still hot from the fryer when served. When it was time to order, I ordered two chicken tacos on flour that was on the $.99 menu. I enjoyed the tacos, but it was missing something, they also have a homemade taco sauce that adds flavor to them. I enjoyed the food and it is a great lunch option. I believe the chips and salsa makes the restaurant, because that was the best thing that I had there. The servers are also very friendly; they are always making sure that we were doing okay. I was very pleased with the service. I would definitely recommend Taco Depot if you are looking for a cheap meal. However, I would suggest using the restroom before going because it literally stinks in their restrooms. It was hard for me to just wash my hands in there; now how do you think I would feel if I actually had to close the door and use the restroom. Someone needs to get that restroom checked out ASAP!

The pork meat tostadas are extremely juicy and flavorful. It's a depot, so don't expect a five star meal, but it's pretty good to be home made drive thru food. The servings are big...so save some for later.

Great little quick spot to stop and get some mexican cuisine. They have the perfect sized mini-burrito which is about $2.95 that comes with your choice of meat, and cheese/lettuce/tomatoes (if my memory serves me right). I also ordered the steak fries once, which is an appetizer, but I won't get them again because I wasn't a fan of their fries. They were sort of cajun/season fries (kind of like Rally's or Checker's fast food fries). In my opinion, they she be regular style fries. Anyway, my friend loves their tacos, and they're only $1! Can't beat that. If you need to eat quick, stop here - very cheap!!

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
