My wife's family is from this area, and she used to love coming here as a kid. So when we were in the area visiting, we made it a point to introduce our kids to the original Frozen Custard. Unfortunately, I was not very impressed. I recognize that this place is a Lafayette tradition, but I thought Culver's frozen custard was better (we tried FC one night and Culver's the next). I like my custard to be cold, smooth and creamy, and what I got was a chocolate/vanilla twist cone that was melting as they put the custard on the cone, and custard that more whipped than creamy. Bottom line, it was a good trip down memory lane, but the custard was just okay.

Being a Purdue grad in the late 80's we recently overnighted in the area and decided to bring my wife to a few places of great memories. Frozen Custard was one of those fond memories. BUT .... the fond memory quickly faded because of an entitled millennial 20 something smart snot twit twig with an attitude. An entitled attitude of not wanting to be there or work. The manager of this establishment should take a cold hard look of the lousy customer service blue capped twiggy snots that interact with paying customers. These millennial dumb twits should stay home and twitter themselves until their fingers fall off. Get wit it twit, your entitled feeling will only last you so long and good luck with finding a real job. If you were one of my customer facing reps I would fire you faster than a Space Shuttle launch!

My 2nd and final visit was yesterday. After being verbally accosted by an incredibly rude and over-bearing "security" guy, we decided to take our business elsewhere. I guess if your job is providing "security" at an ice cream stand, a car pulling into a handicapped parking space and taking more than 5 seconds to get the placard hung might just be the high point of your day. This clown was incredibly rude to my wife, and after that exchange was finished neither of us had any intention of spending any money there. My advice to the proprietor: screen your help just a bit more carefully.

The original frozen custard is in my opinion the best. This place has been around forever. The neon around the top of the building is truly vintage. The atmosphere here is much better than the other frozen custard locations. It is also directly across from Columbian Park, which is ever so convenient.

HAVE AGAIN: The twist (vanilla and chocolate) is wonderful, as always. NEXT TIME: I'll have the twist again!

I used to love coming here. As a Lafayette tradition, I'd always get a twist cone after playing at the park or swimming at the pool. Unfortunately the service has gone downhill over the last couple of years. The custard has been alright, for the most part. When they opened for this season, I remember buying a twist cone and being disappointed because it was 98% vanilla and maybe a couple specks of chocolate. When I brought it up to the manager that I thought I got a vanilla cone by accident, he was very rude to me. I ordered a large twist cone today, and the cone is completely stale. I don't know if we'll be going back for awhile. So sad to see a Lafayette tradition going downhill.

Get the swirl of chocolate and vanilla! Come here after visiting the zoo across the street. Closes at the end of October, the building is not insulated, we ate archons while sitting with the seat heater on!

In my personal opinion the ice cream and custard is really really good in here :-) I have tried a few different items from their menu and all of them have been delicious. I stop here anytime I come to the zoo or the park just to have some great ice cream or just a lemonade.

Unquestionably, this is the best there is. I have had Ted Drewes, Kopps, Culvers, and several others but nothing else has the subtle flavor of the Original in Lafayette. We will all miss Kirk but he will live on every time we lick the sides of the cone on a hot day to keep it from dripping onto our hands (or even worse, the ground!).

Truly is a Lafayette staple and you can't not love the place. This one is the original too so it is by far my favorite. As a kid this was my favorite place to go with my family and I still love it and it is now a place I take my niece every summer. Their fruit drinks are so good and the vanilla coke is always a classic choice. I also love their dirt sundaes and I'm pretty sure everything else on the menu is amazing as well!

Apparently, I missed out on this institution, while I was a student at Purdue. I finally came here with my bf and his family to try it. I had the "vanilla in a cone." It was creamy and smooth, but still lacked some of the flavor and texture that comes with a rich frozen custard. I might just have to do a side-by-side comparison with my other favorites. Though, it is nice that they offer other flavors besides vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and twist everyday. It took me awhile to decide between vanilla and birthday cake.

I've been going here since I was a little kid and this is the best custard I've ever eaten anywhere. The price is a little more than it was in the 1950's, but it's still the same great product. In my opinion the best flavors are the plain vanilla and the chocolate, available in a cone or a dish. While they are making new flavors - always good to try something new - you can never go wrong with chocolate and vanilla. If you have a little time sit under the awning and enjoy your treat, then maybe walk on over to the Columbian Park Zoo and see what you can see.

The Frozen Custard, known as "The Custard" by locals, is a Lafayette institution. Generations of residents have made a trip to The Custard as a rite of passage, a first date, or just to hang out. Located on the corner of Wallace and Main Sts. across the street from Columbian Park, it's easy to see how this walk-up ice cream stand has become a local gathering spot. Many stories abound about "Granny," an elderly lady and matriarch of the owner's family who could be found at the cone window every summer until her death. She plays a major role in a local legend involving Axl Rose, Guns n Roses lead singer and Lafayette native. Besides custard ice cream, other local favorites include fruit drink and nut bars. Hot dogs, sandwiches, and other food items are also served there. Recently, the custard machines were replaced and some aficianados believe the consistency of the custard is not what it used to be. However, you have to make a trip to The Custard when you visit Lafayette.

Super delicious. The family and I were at the Columbian Park Zoo and stopped by here to get some dessert, man talk about good stuff. The best custard we've had in recent memory. I had a traditional sundae and my wife had a mix of custard and a slushy - I forget the name of it, brain freeze maybe? - and we were both pleased.

This is probably the best frozen custard in the world. Both my mom and I love it. Bravo! The prices are great but the custard is better! Please go here!!! You can get your treat and relax in the shade! I would recommend this place to anyone in the world!!! Don't walk here, run here!!!

My strawberry cream soda was less than stellar. The syrup lacked flavor and they skimped on the custard. My daughter enjoyed her chocolate shake though. The prices were decent.
