Overall: Classic, delicious southern comfort food at great prices. Yats is a cult classic. The good: The food is great, from the creole to the jambalaya to the etouffee. All come with hearty amounts of rice and bread. Leaves you satisfied. The service is chipotle-like, you go up and order. But it comes out quick and hot and the service was friendly. Lots of hot sauces to choose from. Cheap prices. The bad: Not much, other than the presentation of the food. Kind of sloppy, but meh. Atmosphere: 8/10 Service: 8/10 Food: 9/10

Always good! They also serve some good brews here. (Try the Breckenridge Vanilla Porter, if they've got it.) I tend not to venture out of my usual - Chili Cheese Etoufee.

Omg holy 'drunken chicken'... AMAZING! This is the first time I've ever had Creole/Cajun food because I never thought I would like it. Let me tell you.. I would be 100lbs heavier if I lived in the vicinity of this place. I got the Drunken Chicken which is served over rice. It has the most amazing taste and it is seasoned to perfection. Talk about comfort food on a cold day, this hit the spot! Also it came with break that had some type of tomato based spread on it. I can't even describe the phenomenal taste that this plate had. I have been craving it ever since I left and could probably eat it everyday. This location was in a cute artsy downtown area. It has a warm feeling on the inside and I recommend it whenever you are wanting a meal that melts in your mouth.. Especially on those cold Midwest days. Enjoy =)) YATS!!

Yats serves deceptively simple meals that are loaded with flavor in an unpretentious and relaxing storefront location. I can't tell you where else you can get two entrees, which they call half and half, for $7 and feel so comfortably full with satisfied taste buds. Are prices low because the food is served on disposable picnicware? Hmmm... Maybe. I'm not a rabid environmentalist so it didn't bother me. Between the three of us in our party, we tried drunken chicken, red beans and sausage, chili cheese étouffée, mushroom spinach étouffée, and chicken creole. Everything is served on quality white rice with some awesome halved Gonnella French bread with Cajun garlic seasoning. They have half a dozen serious draft beers though we had fountain drinks and/or iced tea. Refills so visit the spice and sauce table to bring the heat and flavor. Comfort food. Good.

You can't ever go wrong with Yats. You just can't. It's always fast, fresh, and friendly! I usually get a 1/2 and 1/2 of B&B and spinach & mushroom etufee. ..also makes GREAT hangover food.. *drop the mic*

This place is awesome. Some of the best Cajun Creole food you'll get outside of New Orleans. Recommend: Drunken Chicken (top it with the Cajun Power Hot Sauce, then drizzle with Franks) Sweet Tea Cigarette After

This is a little strip mall place that we only came to because of the reviews. Looks aren't everything - the food was very tasty and not expensive. I had Drunken Chicken on rice and my husband had Jambalaya. We thought they gave us a little more rice than necessary but the rest of the meal was plenty. Can be crowded at lunch although line moves fast, there is not a lot of seating.

Great flavor and great service in this lil place. The problem is that in my order of half chicken chili and half beans and sausage I only had 1 thin slice of sausage and 2 tiny pieces of chicken.

Visiting from TX. Decided to come here for dinner after reading the reviews. Friendly service, but was pretty disappointed by the food. Food was nothing special. Living in the South and having tried Creole/Cajun food in Louisana... I guess this is a good attempt. But I can make better at home. It feels like eating cafeteria food. The only thing that tasted good was the bread. Would not recommend if you're looking for legit Creole/Cajun.

Have you ever noticed that "Yats" spelled backwards is Stay? That poetry sums up the good mood food served at almost any location, especially the new location less than a mile from my place! Happy dance! For your first-timers, don't let the menu intimidate you. The worker dudes will give you a taste of whatever to ease the decision making process. A full order will fill your fluffy tummy, but I'll usually split one with my husband. Must get extra bread! After a meal, I don't feel like the food is suffocating me. Bonus! Many of my vegetarian friends adore Yats' many meatless options. The location is conveniently located in Trader's Pointe shopping plaza with mucho parking space. I'm the kinda gal who enjoys useful shops nearby, like the GNC and Great Clips. Stop. Drop. Eat. Repeat!

It's a new Yats location and what can be said? Same awesome food !!!!! Small but nice decor. Employees very impressive - friendly and go out of their way to call you by name. Quick service and delicious food - would choose this location over other based on the staff.

Same as other Yats locations -- great food, cheap prices, good service. I recently tried a new menu offering -- chorizo etouffee. It was less flavorful that some of their other options, but if you go halfsies with the chili cheese etouffee and mix them together, it is kind of the perfect food. Bonus with this location, plenty of parking and some tables outside. Yeah, they face the parking lot, but they are mostly shaded and a great option if you have pets with you. One small complaint. A recent carryout order was heavy on the rice, pretty light on the good stuff. The cashier ran back to spoon up my order and I think that is not her normal job (she seemed a bit harried). So hopefully this was just a blip.

This is one of my favorite Yats locations, mainly due to the draft beer selection. I have drank many a Dreadnaught at this location. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because they tend to run out of my favorites by the time I make it there. Please make more Jerk Chicken & Maque Choux!

  • Ellen J.

Excellent food! It's what brings me back every time! My favorite is the chili cheese etouffe with crawfish. It's always a generous portion and, as with all entrees, comes with toasted french bread with a seasoned butter spread. Delish! The only ONLY reason I subtracted a star and kept it out of 5 star status is due to a lack of cleanliness the last few times I've visited. In each case, I ended up having to wipe down a table myself. Normally if a place is slammed, I will totally overlook that. I've worked in the food business, I get it. However, in each of the said visits they were not swamped at the counter or in the back. On the contrary, I could see the workers congregated and chit-chatting in the back (kitchen), ignoring the overflow of trash and the abundance of dirty tables. Will I come back? Yes! I crave that etouffe - super addictive! But please, Yats employees, try to clean tables a bit more!

LOVE COMING HERE. Good amount of food. Fast. Inexpensive. It's amazing Cajun food. I wish I thought of this idea. If you don't know what something tastes like- they welcome you to try it in a little cup. Everyone that works there is very chill, they want to help you. Always get the chili cheese étouffée, it's one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth. You also get two slices on bread with Cajun butter. It's so good. Please go there- I'll pay if you take me ;)

Fantastic food. I've never been disappointed when choosing Yats for lunch or dinner. One of my our favorite lunch spots because of the many gluten free options for my wife. (Although I don't think she's ever been able to order anything but the B&B) Great atmosphere, the employees are totally invested in creating a fun experience for all.

This was our first time to try take out Yats-Trader's Point Shopping Center. Wait staff was very helpful with portion size and recommended selections. Quick service once we ordered! Scrumptious food, not too spicy!! Everything we tried was excellent!

Tats is terrific, inexpensive and the food is the best. I always get the chili cheese étouffée. It's nice and spicy. Yummy!

Maybe I just don't "get" this type of food. It looked like a pile of cat vomit, and was not very exciting. It was however really affordable and service was very nice. I ate my pile of gray mush and went back to my hotel and immediately sprayed diarrhea everywhere.

I didn't even know this Yats was here until I moved to the NW side late last year. It's your typical Yats experience. Good food for cheap. It's a little weird that it's in a strip mall (I'm used to the College Ave and Mass Ave locations), but once you step inside you forget that there's a chain bookstore, grocery store, and movie theater next door.

  • Brandon S.

Yats is fantastic! Great efouffes/gumbos and similar options. Their bread is dangerous - very good, make sure you don't have too much of it. I've been to a few different locations throughout the city and they were all great and the customer service is exceptional.

Today I am a proud parent. In spite of my fears that even Yelper's kids may not be able to get past the look of a sloppy light brownish mass on top of a plate of rice, the young generation poked at the carefully separated piles, produced happy "Mmm!" sounds, piled crawfish étouffée on top of rice and then went for seconds. Must be a start of a "happily ever after family takeout" fairy tale, especially with Yats coming closer to the suburbs. I must admit that the first time I wandered into Broadripple Yats and looked at the sloppy plates that seemed to be distinguished only by a shade of brown, I questioned what all the hype was about. It only took a couple of bites to get it. The spice that is an "extract of warmth" with smoothness of cheese and chunks of crawfish made the world seem a kinder, older, warmer place. Sweet tea and a couple of beer and wine choices look carefully selected to complement the food. Chicken chili and spicy sausage are no longer shades of brown - the are reason to look forward to the next visit.

Yats is a staple. I don't know how better to describe it. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is perfect, and the staff are awesome. If you aren't eating you are wrong!

Chipoltle meet Cajun food. This place is a nice spot to grab a quick bite to eat for lunch Dine in or carry out option. Dine in area is small and first come first serve and features outdoor seating as well. If you're with a bigger group, have somebody post up on the table to save for everybody else. Prices are quite affordable and I recommend the half and half, you can two of their many options for less than 10 dollars. I went with the drunken chicken and jambalaya, both filling with a nice kick to the jambalaya. Service is quick and efficient as staff are friendly and accommodating. Bathroom was clean, one toilet per room so there might be a small wait. Yats is great for a quick lunch on the go

I come to this location every so often when meeting my family "in the middle". The food is fantastic as any location [see my review for Avon Yats if you want more info or read the other reviews here] but I feel the need to point a few things about this particular location. The staff here [at least in the evening] is so great! Friendly, helpful, upbeat! After a few visits they even remembered us which is impressive because we don't come that regularly. They are so nice. This location also serves alcohol [I hope Avon does eventually...]. Local beers and wine, yessss. They also have a REWARDS system with the magnets from their draft beer [it is one of those fancy fill-from-the-bottom machines, you just gotta see it if you haven't]. There is one magnet that you only need one of and you get a free meal and [soft] drink. The other magnets have to be collected as a set up 4 [I believe] and then you get the same prize. Excellent! Who doesn't like being rewarded to drink beer? My family and I have often combined our magnets and already redeemed a couple. I am sure we will back soon, I think we have at least one free meal in magnets!

!! After all these years Still A fan !! I feel happy to say that after 3 years of not eating Yats due to relocation to Seattle, WA. On My adventure back to Indianapolis , I had to stop in and see if YATS was as good as I remember. - Cookie num num!! - décor - is still kick a$$ - Rice perfect and fluffy - Bread , crispy soft and still a perfect way to scoop! - B&B spot on "oh , that Indiana corn" - Vegan white chili just a little heat it was delish! - Beer , A few good selections. I was glad to have a Sunking! The Staff?? Just as nice and helpful as I remembered. My partner wasn't sure what to order, so They allowed us to have a few little tasters. To help her choose what to get. ? Improvements ? The only thing that I would give a negative mark on. Is the use of styro -foam plates at the 86th street location. I am not sure if every Yats does this. But I think a bio degradable or recyclable plastic or just good Glass plates would be an improvement.

My favorite value Cajun restaurant. Get food to go here at least once a week. My son and wife love their bread. I recommend the chipotle alexio, drunken chicken, and chili cheese etouffee. Their jambalaya could be better, but they give a huge portion and often sell out of it. A staple of Indy food!

  • Julia C.

I'm so happy that they opened on the Northwest side. So convenient for me to just swing by after visiting the pet store, craft store, or like this weekend, the movies. I really don't like the layout of this Yats. The space is very narrow and it is easy to bum into people. There was a guy at the bar and I felt like I was hugging him when I was in line to order my food. And my back got pushed twice by other patrons and someone actually pulled my hair a little as they walked by. VERY annoying. Service and food was fantasic as always. I think they should have thought out the layout a little better.

If you're looking for something delicious and want to take a break from the same old places, look no farther than Yats. I had the chili cheese etoufee with crawfish. I contemplated going back for dinner (had it for lunch) to have it again but I didn't want to ruin it by having it too much. The dish had a lot of crawfish on it and just a slight hint of spice, perfect for a chicken like me who can't handle spicy. During lunch on a Friday, the place was packed but the line moved swiftly and efficiently. I only had to wait about two or three minutes to get my food. They have a great system. Warning: if you have picky eaters in your party or you yourself are a picky eater, this might not be the place for you. I loved Yats and I can't wait to go back!

The food is obviously delicious because it's Yats, but this location had a nice big table that was perfect for our group lunch meeting. Fast service, delicious food - you can't go wrong here.

The stafff could not be friendly here! Awesome job guys! Chorizo Etouffee with chicken is spicy and delicious. The bread could be a meal in itself. Chocolate Chip Toffee Cookie is so thick!! And good with coffee.

Yatz was the first restaurant I tried in Indy, based entirely on Yelp reviews. It is fantastic. I haven't found anything better yet.

Need more stars to rate Yats truthfully! Living out of state (as mentioned in other reviews previously...sorry) there was a handful of Indy places that I craved on a weekly basis. So much that the wifey and I would fantasize about past meals and good times...Yats was at the top of this list. I can truthfully say that in all my travels I have never encountered anywhere else that is like or compares to Yats. This place definiley resides in a warm corner of my soul (and stomach!) I am a huge believer in the whole "you either love this place or you dont!' and for the people in the latter catergory...i'm not sure what your deal is :)?!?! I have followed Yats around like the Grateful Dead. My first exposure to Yats was their (now defunct) Brownsburg location (the wifey and I actually went there on one of our first dates many moons ago.) This is where I was exposed to their simple concept and excellent food. Once this location closed its doors, I began venturing to other locations in search of my etouffee fix. I have since tried the Bloomington (closed I think..) mass ave, college ave and Carmel locations. All of them very consistent. After moving back to Indy, I was floored to see there was a Northside (Trades Point) location now opened which is very close to my home base. I take much comfort in knowing this and think that maybe...JUST MAYBE this will help with getting me through this frigid Indy winter that is fastly approaching. For food...My favs are: B&B (veg) Chili Cheese Eouffe with CHICKEN (dont see it much anymore) White Chili Maq Choux Alexandria

Visiting from Chicago.. My husband picked up Yats and brought it back to the hotel. So good, I had to write a review!! We had a little bit of everything, but I definitely recommend the drunken chicken. Yummy!

Very tasty and creative menu. The gumbo is thick, rich, and has just the right amount of spice. But not too much salt as can sometimes be the case. A highlight is the sauce table with various hot sauces to add more flavor. The local beers on tap add to the experience. Split an order and try two different dishes.

I first had Yats at a French festival downtown in early September and I enjoyed it. After months, I finally decided to try it out again. I've always heard bad things about Yats, especially about the rice. The place was almost empty and was very quiet. The staff was friendly. The decor was tacky. I got my meal quickly which made me happy at least. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't bad. I would return but it wouldn't be my first option in where to eat for the night.

  • Jon C.

Okay, I hate to say anything bad about Yat's because I LOVE it, but the layout of this Yat's makes it quite difficult to move about the space. The food and service is as excellent as any location I've been to, but I'll seriously consider coming back to this location simply because of the logistical nightmare it is to get from one end of the store to the other. When you walk in, the counter is dead ahead on the left. There are bar stools wrapped around it, and these people become your buddies while you're in line and they're trying to eat. When someone gets their food (or needs a drink refill) they also get to walk back and forth, meaning two lines of traffic are trying to fit into a tight spot. Again, the food is fantastic and the staff couldn't be nicer. Heck, they even serve beer and take credit cards here, unlike some of the other locations. I just think whomever came up with the design and layout was probably mad at the world the day the plans were drafted, and this is their payback.

I have been searching for a good Cajun/creole place in indianapolis for some time now. A friend brought me here and I've heard him and a few other people rave about it. I, however, did enjoy my meal but it was just mediocre. Service was good, guys were friendly. But food.... I would go back, but definitely wouldn't be my top pick for a place to eat.

  • William C.

This is a strip mall lunch place. The food is tasty and not very expensive. Jumbalia was heavy on the rice but good for the price. Drinkin chicken was also heavy on the rice but very flavorful. You get plenty on a plate They are very busy at lunch but can move people through pretty fast. You may not gat a seat inside unless you are willing to wait or sit with someone else. Hard to park nearby but lots of parking in the area. Many gluten free items

  • Jonathan N.

I came in to try for lunch. The staff is very nice and allows you to try any flavor you would like before you order. They also have a pretty good selection of hot sauce, some a lot spicier than others. I tried the half/half, which allows you to get a plate with 2 flavors and a piece of bread. Chili Cheese Etouffee with Crawfish was definitely the better of the two flavors. It was creamy and had a hint of spice. I enjoyed this but if I got an entire plate, it might get a little tiring. The Drunken Chicken was okay, I feel like some of the other flavors will be better. It is a nice break from the regular lunch, but it is not something I crave. The real reason I came here is because I saw that there was ghost pepper powder here, unfortunately I did not see any in the hot sauce station.. maybe another time.

Amazing customer service almost everytime I order I get my name called to pick up my food right before I finish paying or right after I get my receipt. Very fast service. Amazing employees, one time a person I was with brought in subway , they made fun of him and told him they'd give him some real food. They brought him some drunken chicken and maque shouix for free. The white chili with chicken is amazing and the bread is ridiculously amazing. Cheese cake is good but not worth the $3 price tag. Meals are cheap at about $6.25 for a plate and bread.

  • Dylan E.

I don't think I've ever had anything at Yats that I didn't love, and I've definitely been here enough to try everything they have had to offer. The food is fantastic Cajun themed dishes served on white rice. They have something for just about every taste, from the sweet maque choux to spicy red beans and sausage to savory chili cheese ettouffee, and even offer vegetarian options if you're into that kind of thing. I haven't seen any nutrition info about their dishes, but I don't imagine that any of them are going to fit too well into a diet plan. Couple the loads of white rice with the scoops of rich sauces along with oiled up bread and you've got something that probably tops out your daily recommended intake in a few categories, but it's still worth it. The servings are huge, so you will never leave hungry. I prefer to order the half and half so that I can get two different items on the same plate. It would be nice if they offered something smaller and cheaper for the lunch crowd who still needed to function after eating. The food is pretty much the same at all locations, so I will go ahead and put in my 2 cents worth on this location in particular. The service was awesome, even during the lunch rush. You order at a counter, and in the time it takes to pick up a fork and some napkins and fill your drink, someone yells your name and your food pops up out of a window to the kitchen where you grab it and find a seat. This is the point when things get difficult. The place was packed when I was there, even with outside seating available on the sidewalk in front. The line went through the entire center of the place and clear out the door, so navigating with a tray full of food wasn't very easy. They did have a lot of people coming in to get to-go orders, but they still lacked in seating. I guess it's a better problem than not having enough customers, but they somehow really underestimated the amount of business they would do, or just had to take what was available and make it work. This location serves beer, and had 4 local taps available when I was there. Added benefit; they have one of those really cool fill-from-the-bottom dispensers which are fun to watch. The inside is decorated with a Cajun theme, but isn't quite as done up as some of the other locations. I imagine that this might have to do with a lack of space. Plenty of hot sauces to choose from to spice up any meal that doesn't pack enough heat for your taste buds. Overall, the food is fantastic, the service is really friendly and fast, and the prices are low for the quantity of great food that you get. The only issue is the crowdedness of the place during busy times with the long lines and deficiency in enough seating.

CRAZY GOOD CAJUN! Yats is an efficient, clean Cajun-Creole place... one of several around Indy. Good food. Good service. Good prices. Yats is a great alternative to the sandwich-pizza-tacos routine.

First time visiting. I don't recall ever eating Cajun food. Staff was awesome! Explained each dish and how the process worked. I chose the 1/2 and 1/2 hunters stew and spinach/mushroom étouffée. Both were very good. There seemed to be more on the 1/2 and 1/2 plates than the full orders. Couldn't finish everything on my plate. Would definitely go back.

Very good but simple menu. Nice spicy food just what the doctor ordered. May raise to 5 stars after trying the rest of the menu. If you live in or are passing through Indy . I suggest eating here.

  • Dan D.

I dig Cajun food. Especially crawfish. I was already a Yats fan before they built this one near me. I've had all kinds of their lunch entrees. All have been great. Only gripe is lack of seating. When you walk in you better get a squatter on a table. I'm thinking they outgrew this location before they even opened. Don't go on a low carb diet, their bread is addictive. The unknown diner digs it!

  • Juan A.

Wow! this place is amazing! Some of the best creole food I have ever tried. I got the half and half, genius! , of the creole chicken and the chilli cheese ettouffee and I also tried some of the drunk chicken. My personal favorite was the chicken creole but all of them were just delicious! So much flavor for so little money can't get any better. I really liked the vibe and decoration of the restaurant. I'll be going back anytime I crave some great creole food.

  • Travis T.

I love Yats. I have been to a few of them and they are all great. Happy to have one up north. Can't go wrong with any of the entrees. And the pecan praline cookies are ridiculous.

  • Robyn C.

I apparently have never had cajun/creole food, but count me as a fan! Small restaurant; very casual. Service was fantastic. Friendly and helpful for the beginners like myself. Food is fast, affordable and delicious. The ultimate comfort food! I dined in with friends, but I would guess that they do just as much takeout. Bottom line: I will be back. Thank you for bringing to the north side!

Received a gift card for Yats for Christmas 2011. Decided to finally give it a try this past weekend. So sorry I waited so long!! Prices were VERY reasonable, portions were large and filling. Everything was YUMMY! Since it was our first time there, they offered us samples of items of our choosing. I ended up with the Chili Cheese Étouffée with Crabmeat and Drunken Chicken. I tasted the jambalaya as well, and it was excellent.

  • Lynette A.

I'm not so sure what the fan fare is. Perhaps I'm biased because I've eaten at Papa Roux and they blow Yats out of the water. Two of us went on a whim here and both of us left our plates. Maybe we just went on a bad lunch day?

  • Cassie S.

The food is always excellent. I always go with the drunken chicken. But I have a feeling that everything is good. I did not give 5 stars is because of the seating. Basically, this place is always packed when I go, which isn't a bad thing for them. But sometimes it can be hard to find a seat. Otherwise, great food, great place. Also, the staff is VERY fast. You'll have your food in a minute or two.

    (4)
  • Heather H.

This area has exploded over the past ten years, and I am so glad that Yats is growing with it. I have tried numerous entrees here and they are all wonderful. Fast service, can be a little crowded during peak times, but the fare is a break from the norm. Fast food without feeling like its "fast food". If you have never been to Yats, this is one to add to your bucket list. And if you're a Duck Dynasty fan, you'll finally understand what all the fuss is about around crawfish. I embrace my inner Miss Kay every time I'm here.

  • Bennett G.

Great food, friendly staff and definitely recommended. My wife and I crave this food shortly after leaving and find ourselves returning to the various locations. This particular restaurant could benefit from a little fine tuning on the ambiance. It definitely feels as though they just slapped up a few decorative pieces to make it like other locations but it isn't enough to cover up the very strip mall feel of the place. Not a huge knock, just food for thought.

  • D H.

Great food; very quick service from the time of order to picking up your food. You may stand in line a little while to order ... depending on the crowd (lunch hour can be rough!). Menu is unique and very tasty. Seating inside can be limited during those busy times.
