Simply the best. Big George and all his family running the place, coming by and telling stories. Sitting outside in good weather for some great cigars. The food is absolutely the best. Start the dinner with some saganaki and then take your pick. Everything on the menu is fantastic. Greek Island steaks are the best kept secret in town. It may be the best steak I've had In a restaurant and I've been to the "Saints", the "Morts" and all the rest. Their employees are top notch so there's never any worry there. Try The Greek Island, you will not be sorry.

This restaurant is a nice family owned Greek joint. It's charming, the staff is friendly and they give you huge portions. There is a seperate gluten free menu, ask for it if you need it. I got the gluten free sganaki as an appetizer, which was delicious. I also had a chicken dish that was tasty (but sparse on veggies, aside from the side of green beans that came with it), and it was enjoyable. My husband had a kebab, which he thought was strange didnt come with rice, but liked nonetheless. The entrees came with tasty Greek salads, but if you dont like a lot of dressing ask for it on the side because they really drown it. It was clean, plenty of seating and a nice atmosphere. I would go to this restaurant again next time I'm in town, I liked it a lot.

Unlike some of the other not 5-star reviews, I love greek food and for me, the more traditional the better. I've gone here 4 times (once for a corporate function so food was pre-ordered) each time I have yet to find something I can fully appreciate. That is not to say Santorini is terrible, it just falls short. I've had all of the appetizers, the lamb, tilapia, and two kinds of gyro. For me, I think the food here lacks the robust flavor of the Mediterranean. The interior doesn't give the open airy feel of summer overlooking an ocean, or an intimate setting gazing in the eyes of an exotic fisherman...it's cramped darkened space doesn't allow you to dive into your imagination of Greece. It may be borderline cozy on a good day, and just sardine packed on any other. I will give it to them, through some hard times they have held on. And, are at least, trying to preserve a spirit of culture here in little Indy. What to try: Saganaki! Have at it! How to make The Greek Island Restaurant Healthy: Stick to the basics here, Greek dining is mostly healthy as it is. Just enjoy in moderation!

I have a tendency to find a Greek restaurant I like and then not try a new one for 5 years. I finally ventured out of my comfort zone the other weekend & tried The Greek Islands for the first time. [-1 star for a bit of an environmental-noise issue, as referenced at the end of the review] Oh my goodness, I might have a new favorite for Greek food in town! We went on a gorgeous Friday evening and we expected the place to be packed (it was a busy night downtown). Shockingly, it was not. We opted for indoor seating, but their patio looked like a pleasant place to have a meal as well. Service was great. We started with an appetizer of saganaki...because you can't go wrong with oozy cheese on fire. Opa! The pita that was served with the saganaki was delicious & fresh with the perfect level of chew. My husband had the gyros dinner and it was more food than he could eat. I tried a piece of the gyro meat, and it was great. It wasn't dried out & it had great flavor. I had an appetizer of the Spanakotiropita & the Avgolemono soup as my dinner (I didn't want all the sides that came with the dinner option, plus I have a pesky bell pepper & tomato allergy). The Avgolemono soup was some of the best I have ever had. The orzo was a bit too mushy for my taste, but the flavor profile was perfection. The Spanakotiropita Were Outstanding. It was also a huge portion, and I ended up having 2 pieces to bring back home. They reheated in the oven perfectly, and were outstanding served with the brunch I made us the next day. I had also requested a side of feta to eat with my dinner, but it never came. That was a bummer, but I was stuffed, so it wasn't a huge deal (we did notify the server & had it scrubbed from our bill though). The food was served with a hot, crusty loaf of bread...which was good, but TOTALLY unnecessary. Next time, and there WILL be a next time, my goal would be to not overly stuff myself like I did on our first visit. I really wanted to try the Baklava. The only downside is that while I think the "belly dancing" aspect is a fun touch...it was TOO MUCH on the night we were there. They pump up the music really loudly during the dance. But if it goes on for more than one song...it's just too much. It's impossible to have a conversation during the dances. Fine for one song, awkward for more than 1 song. It was really bad on the night we were there, because the dancer knew a big family that was sitting at a table by us. After her 2-song dance, she brought out extra castanets to the plethora of kids sitting at the table (who had been done with their meal for more than 20 minutes, but the parents were visiting with staff), so they could try using them. That's a cute idea in theory, for a couple of minutes...but over 10 minutes of children banging tiny cymbals without rhyme, reason, or rhythm...it brings out my angry side. That would be a great activity for OUTSIDE the restaurant...not inside to the detriment of other diners' ears. But, if you don't mind Club-Music-sound-levels & cacophonous mayhem...then indoor dining will be right up your alley. I left with a pleasantly full belly...but a rip-roaring headache from the castanets. If visiting on a weekend again, we would gladly choose outdoor dining instead of indoor if weather was agreeable...simply because it seemed quiet outside.

We chose this restaurant for dinner following outdoor activities on a summer afternoon. It was our first visit. Traffic wasn't bad even though it was early evening. We parked close to the building at no cost. Acoustics in the dinning room made conversation enjoyable. We each ordered a small salad, I ordered chicken orzo soup with lemon and my wife chose grilled salmon. Our server recommended MacMurray Russian River Valley Pinot Gris. We were impressed with how well it paired with the food. Our salads were fresh, crisp and flavorful. My soup was rich and savory, and my wife liked the way her fish was prepared but thought the portions were a bit large. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive, we enjoyed the meal, and the cost was reasonable. We hope to return and try other things on the menu.

There are very few places that can scratch my authentic greek cuisine itch, but the great, gregarious, and amazing people at Greek Islands can definitely do that. There isn't anywhere in Indy that I would rather go to get a pita overflowing with lamb loaf goodness and tzatziki sauce. Please do yourself a favor and go spend an hour with your greek family and get some amazing gyros. P.S. The baklava is OUTSTANDING! Can't beat it.

I had a group event here and I have to say that Greek Islands did a fantastic job! Big George is a consummate host and this is everything you'd want in a Greek restaurant. To be sure, this is an old school Greek restaurant---It's Tselementes based cooking, so you know what you're getting. We had excellent fish with rice and briami style vegetables (sautéed in tomato sauce). I also have to say that the saganaki made by Big George at the Yelp event was top-notch. I fully intend to come in the near future and try more of the menu--I would have been long before were Greek Islands not on the south side of downtown... I do wish they would fix up their parking lot though!

Very impressive little place. I had the Kota, and it was phenomenal. The service, the atmosphere, and c the attention to detail were all top shelf. Hope to visit this place again sometime.

I am ebarassed to see that I have not written a review for this wonderful restaurant. When I first moved to indianapolis, The Greek Islands was one of the first restaurants I ate at. We met the owner's at an event and they were so wonderful I knew we had to give it a try. Almost 5 years later and I still love coming to this place. The wonderful food draws you in but the friendly employees keep you coming back. When you are at The Greek Islands you are family!

Authentic, Greek cuisine in an intimate setting. Food was terrific; I ordered the special which was red snapper, asparagus, and mushrooms...yum! Make a reservation if going after 5 or 6. Expect to wait a little on the food, but it is worth it.

I had a pregnancy-induced hankering for gyros and had never been here so I dragged my husband and toddler here for a Friday night dinner. He admittedly doesn't love Greek food. I'd give the food 4 stars but overall 3 stars. We started with the 4 dip appetizer cuz we love Middle Eastern style hummus and baba ghanoush, but their hummus and eggplant dip were Greek takes on them and they were not what we expected. Both were very garlicky but somehow a bit bland. I ended up liking the taramosalata best (caviar paste dip which the server described as a "fish dip"). Husband and kid ordered gyros, which they both liked--entree portion was huge. I ended up ordering the Souvlaki, since i figured i'd get some some bites of gyros from the rest of the table. My entree was also huge and the pork was tender. The problem was the service. We felt nearly ignored by our very slow server. Empty drink glasses and extra plates were crowding our tabletop and I was never able to catch her attention in the small dining room. Request for extra pita bread took a looong time. It did get more crowded as we sat but the dining room was pretty empty when we first go there. The decor was definitely dated and it didn't feel very "clean" anywhere. There was a belly dancer that night and her music was WAY too loud. We probably won't be back. Although a friend suggested this place over Santorini's, I have to disagree.

Was in Indy for nascar and stopped here for dinner. We ordered the saganaki that was amazing! The avgomeno soup was great. Was different than what I am used to because it was served with orzo instead of rice. We all ordered the Greek islands combo. It included salad and 7 menu items for a great price! Actually enough food for 2 people if you would like to split the order. Absolutely loved the consistent drink refills. Great service. Wasn't expecting the entertainment offered by a belly dancer. Thought that was cool. She kept it very tasteful in keeping with the family atmosphere.

We were in town for a concert for my birthday and I haven't had good authentic Greek food in years so I was excited to try this little place. It was off the beaten path yet close by downtown which made it a short taxi ride for us, but if you're driving parking shouldn't be an issue. The decor is a little out dated. But it's clean and those dark, "trendy" restaurants start to all look the same. Anyway, this place has a homey, mom & pop feel. I had already scoped out the menu on Yelp and knew what I wanted: EVERYTHING! So of course I ordered the Greek islands special and my husband had the Korinthians dinner. So much food! I ate as much as I could but still left half my food behind. Everything was delicious but special mention goes to the Gyros meat which was so savory and well seasoned and the moussaka was the best I have ever had! My husband enjoyed his lamb chops. This was his first real Greek experience and he is now a fan. I am subtracting half a star because his chops were slightly over done, but he wasn't asked how he'd like them. They were still juicy and delicious! I wish we had room for dessert but the belly dancer would qualify for a good after dinner treat. She was lovely! I hope we return to Indianapolis soon because I don't think I can go long without wanting to visit this place again!

I love this place. The food is amazing and the service is good. If you are going for lunch get there early or you might have a little wait...but well worth it. You must have the Saganaki it is delicious!!

I love Greek Island. So does my mother. And her mother before her. Obviously they do something right because two out of those three women are really hard to please (hint, not me) and they continue to come back for EVERY SINGLE special dinner. George is always so wonderful to us and we feel right at home when we are there. The staff is always on top of things, despite it usually being balls to the wall and they make you feel so special. There's something in the air there that just makes you want to yell "Opa"

Don't judge a book by its cover, especially when that book isn't a book at all, but is actually a great little Greek restaurant. Greek Islands may not look like much, but it's what's on the inside that counts. And what's inside is superb food and friendly service. I recently went here for lunch with some guys from work. They seated us immediately, got us drinks quickly, and helped make food recommendations. The food itself was great - large, flavorful portions that really hit the spot. Everything was cooked perfectly and came out hot and delicious. I had a modified chicken souvlaki they had on special that day and it was wonderful. The other guys in the group liked their meals too and everyone left full and happy. I can't help but think that, after such a good experience, we may need to make this a regular lunch stop.

The hummus appetizer was really good but the pasta was not. Fazolis has better pasta. I guess I should have went with the gyro.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, THIS CITY HAS ONLY ONE AUTHENTIC GREEK RESTAURANT WITH OUTSTANDING FOOD. I think it only makes sense to have your Greek food prepared by Greeks. The Greek Islands has been owned and operated by the Stergiopoulos family for over 30 years. I know that the other south side Greek restaurant has good food, but it is not great. I know that the other south side restaurant is newer, but a fire will do that for ya. But regardless of how nice the interior is, the food is not as good as the food at The Greek Islands. Don't get me wrong, I've eaten there and the food is good, but NOT GREAT. And no matter how nice the interior of the other restaurant is, it is not run by a loving, professional, community driven Greek family. It takes much more than a "menu" to make a real Greek restaurant...... George Stergiopoulos and Angela Stergiopoulos maintain the same quality, atmosphere and loving culture that Poppa Louie and Momma Fofo have modeled for over 30 years.... Thank you George and Angela for making every meal special for me and my family. THE FAMILY IS THE DIFFERENCE MAKER. Ask to see George and Angela and tell them hello.

I'm a sucker for this place, 4.5 stars overall. Great gyros with some of the friendliest staff you've ever seen. Several tasty Greek wine options for the full "I'm in Greece" dream sequence. Even the Greek salad is great here, and I am generally not impressed with that type of salad. The hummus and baklava were 4 stars out of 5, but the rest (gyros, spanikopita, salads, pitas, green beans, rice, wine) hit the 5 star mark. Toddler factor: Impeccably clean high chairs. Smiley staff. The complimentary soft bread and pita bread were a hit with the little guy.

Upon entering the restaurant, a Grecian punch of delightful smells hit my olfactory senses. I was hers. Like in a Looney Tunes cartoon, I was in love, except I was floating on the delicious scent of charred meat and spices. Great Greek beer selection. The portion sizes are HUGE and worth every dollar. Many of the really authentic dishes are $16-18 with a salad. I didn't know magic could be an ingredient, but they use a lot of it in the house salad dressing. I had souvlaki, because meat on a skewer is one of my favorite things. The pork was tender and the veggies were crisp. The service is wonderful, and every employee pitches in for each other. We had multiple servers check on us. Can I get an OPA?

OPA!! This place is as close to Greece as you're going to get inside the land-locked boundaries of the Hoosier state! I've been going to The Greek Islands for the last couple years and it is consistently awesome. Recently I even had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners, Angela, whose passion for cooking and entertaining guests is evident. All of her recipes are passed down from her family and are always authentic and delicious. I try to branch out and try new things but the moussaka always calls my name from the menu....It's so good!! It's hard to talk about this place without mentioning the atmosphere! On weekends, there is belly dancing and sometimes live music! It's so nice to just sit back and enjoy the show while you wait for your flaming Saganaki to arrive and the room to erupt is a joyous round of "OPA"!! Kali Orexi!

Omg this was my first time having authentic Greek food. It. Was. AMAZING!!! My server was very knowledgeable about the menu. The food was delicious, and portions were big enough to take some home for a midnight snack! I will definitely return!!!

What a Great little place. If ever there was the quintessential neighborhood restaurant, this is it. Spontaneous Greek dancing broke out while I was having dinner, and everyone clapped. Wonderfully crafted food with a homespun flavor. Really enjoyed my meal and the wonderful atmosphere.

always a great treat to go and eat with the family here. We went on a weekday and it was quite, the way we like it. Took foodie friends from Detorit and they fell in love with out 'greek' place, even their somwhat picky kids went out on a limb and fell in love.. As always staff was great, food was filling and plentyful and the whole family loved it.

By far the best place my group ate in Indianapolis. We had a spunky waitress, who made useful comments and suggestions, and the eccentric owner came out later and spoke with us. We were mentally and physically exhausted from a long day at a trade show, so were not in an ideal state to enjoy ourselves, but Greek Islands made us do so in spite of ourselves. The worst part was that we couldn't make up our minds because everything seemed super-interesting. Two of our party cracked under the strain and got combo plates. Everything was great, came in large quantities, and tasted exotically good. Even boring old stand-byes like that flaming cheese thing were good fun. I had pastatitsa (sp?) and despite (because of?) its simplicity enjoyed myself.

Oh, Greek Islands you were like a little piece of Greek heaven! We started off with the flaming cheese. Opa!!! Who doesn't like fried, warm cheese with pita bread?? The chicken souvlaki was so good. Greek potatoes, rice, grilled chicken kabobs, green beans and tiziki sauce. My husband got a Greek combination platter which had about 6-7 different Greek specialties, including gyro. Two people could definitely share this platter. We ended with baklava and gelato, which was covered in a hard chocolate shell. Overall, everything tasted so delicious and the owner, George was so kind and very welcoming!!! Try this place out for sure! They also have patio seating outside for the warm summer months.

Holy meat batman! I had a hard time finding anything to eat here that wasn't stuffed with some kind of meat, but after I decided to eat fish .. Yummmmmmmmm!! It was spectacular. The server was extremely friendly and helpful, and there was a sword wielding belly dancer there for entertainment. We split a chocolate crusted gelato for dessert and it was fantastical. If you're a veggie you might skip this place though.

It's a nice, family business and we generally have a good meal here. Their orzo soup (with the lemon) is very good. Typically, we stick to the very basic dishes (souvlaki, pasticchio), but this time I decided to try something new - the fish kebab special, served on a salad. We stopped in for dinner on a Thursday night, since we were downtown for a later afternoon concert. Our group ordered the chicken souvlaki dinner, pasticchio, fish kebab salad, and orzo soup. The dinners were served with a white bread, rather than pita. Both the chicken and pasticchio disappeared quickly. The salad under my kebab was dressed very nicely in a creamy dressing. The kebab was a bit oily and I only ate a few bites. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. I would come again for the soup.

Delicious food! Service is superb! Flaming cheese app. is a must! I had the combo meal that included a bit of everything and I couldn't have been more pleased. The soups that are offered are delectable. The spacious dining room can accommodate large parties, but can also be cozy for a table for two. The flaming cheese appetizer is a show stopper for sure. A parking lot all their own is nothing but a plus!

Great food, great staff, great prices. I've come here many times for lunch and dinner. It is all good. Their lemon rice soup and gyros are my favorite things. Though, I think I can just eat the green beans and be content. The service is really quick and accommodating at lunch!

Best Greek restaurant I've ever been to! Easily tops anything in Chicago's greek town, which is no small task. The red pepper stuffed with feta is delicious and the spanakopita was the best I've ever had. The server was delightful and the place is very family oriented. I will be back soon!

Am I a flamer? Well if it has anything to do with Saganaki, why yes I am, and often going forward. This was the BEST I've ever tasted and a perfect starter to showcase what was to come. Our traditional hummus/pita starter was good, but as we continued, it was as if each dish was trying to 'one up' the last. The roasted red pepper with feta tantalized my taste buds. Then came the cheese on fire ... OPA!!! Was I excited? I must admit, that was hot! The chicken lemon orzo soup, a family recipe, was out of this world. I followed the instructions to squeeze fresh lemon & pepper it. It was a soothing comfort dish, not too heavy, but perfect for doctoring what ails you. If the flu has hit your home, I strongly suggest considering ordering as take out. I really enjoyed the wine pairings with dinner, and plan to look for Rodney Strong to share with friends. The Chardonnay was slightly sweet and complimented the everything well. The Merlot was nice and light, not overpowering. Throughout each course, the owners came over and visited with us, providing a very welcoming and personal atmosphere. Service was excellent, and I noticed that it wasn't just our table, but an overall attentiveness to all patrons. My kabobs arrived, packing every inch of my skewer with perfectly grilled and marinated chicken, onions, and peppers and were served on a bed of rice with Greek potatoes, green beans Olympian and a side of Tzaziki. Two kabobs were more than enough, and my feelings weren't hurt having to enjoy more of it later. Jon shared a bite of his cod, a juicy flavorful dish, the size of his forearm...but I had to save room for dessert. Whatever you do, DO NOT pass on dessert! The baklava was good, and yes, the Galactobouriko (phyllo pastry with homemade custard and smothered in light syrup) was even better, but you have to try the Homemade Rizogalo, mama fofos rice pudding. Don't be fooled, this custard like dessert with an innocent dash of cinnamon will make you wanna kiss the cook. I'm looking forward to visiting again soon, perhaps even before the wine event next month.

Maybe it was just a bad night for this restaurant. We sat down promptly, but no server came by for a long time. This was a precursor to painfully slow service throughout the meal. Meanwhile two women who appeared to be managers stood around watching, but not helping the overwhelmed waiters. The food was standard Greek fare, although the hummus had no flavor. The belly dancer was very personable and talented! Santorini's blows this place away for service and ambiance.

We found this place after my wife scoured the web for kid friendly restaurants on a late Monday afternoon. We have 2 boys and they can be a handful. So this was the basis for our decision and Greek food sounded good to me. My wife had been there before and said from what she remembers, nothing had changed from like 7 years ago. Decor was a little dated but not horrible. We were pleasantly surprised by the salad and bread at the beginning. Just what the boys needed to hold them over till the meal. We started with the appetizer cheese that gets lit on fire. I think my kids were a little young (1 and 3) to really enjoy the fire. In a year maybe. It was tasty, although I think it could have come with more Pita bread. I think it was 4 small pieces. I ordered the Meat Pie which was tasty and the crust was crisp and rather good. I think the sides of green beans and rice could have used something. I don't know what but something more unique. I don't know what my wife ordered, but it looked similar to mine and she said she liked it. And she can be picky. The boys seemed happy with their food. Which is all we can hope for, really. The cost was not cheap and that's probably my only complaint. The dinners started at like $14 and went up from there. Some of the entrees warranted that cost but others didn't seem like they did. The server was helpful and friendly. The only thing we thought could have used some work was getting us the check as soon as we asked. He seemed to take a bit and the natives were getting restless. The owner came over and said hi at the end after my wife had already gone out to the van with the 3 year old. She seemed nice and asked how everything was. I also enjoyed that they had some craft beer options which I had a red ale that was good. I had dropped my credit card under my chair and they got it to me before I left. Which I was supremely appreciative of. Overall a good experience! We'd probably go back and suggest others to check it out.

Opa!! Sorry, I cant help myself from feeling the Greek spirit when I am in here. It doesnt have the newest carpet on the floors or the flashiest art on the walls, but I wouldn't change a thing. It is what a family restaurant should be like. If my grandma were Greek, I can imagine this is what her food would taste like. The Greek Islands Restaurant serves true Greek comfort food. You can tell love goes into each dish. Get the whole experience on Friday and Saturday nights. Belly dancers show off their moves and if your lucky, grandpa will break plates on the floor and yell Opa! Its like nothing else and its right here in Indianapolis!

I love Greek Islands. I really do. The service is always good and the food is exceptional (and plentiful). However, if I could just get a picture of the Saganaki on fire I would be ecstatic. Every time I've been, it's set on fire before I'm ready. So, Monday when we went (I was with a friend who's never been and she wanted a picture for Instagram), after we ordered it, we told the waitress, "Do NOT set the Saganaki on fire until we have our phones out and camera ready!" She looked at me strangely, so I explained to her that I'd tried to get a picture of it three times and was never ready. She smiled and walked away. We continued talking and when we saw the waitress coming toward us, we fumbled for our cameras and.....she set the cheese on fire before we even had them out. Our disappointment was obvious. The waitress looked at us. Our table of people looked at each other. One of us said,"We wanted a picture." The waitress said,"Oh, you should have told me. If you order another one I will be sure you get picture." *sigh* Language barrier? I don't know. As disappointed as we were, we got over it with each bite of Saganaki and the meals we ordered. Yum!! Yes, we'll be back again sometime. And maybe next time we WILL get that picture!!!

The location is on Meridian just barely past downtown, which means parking is plentiful. The restaurant is small and cute. I enjoy the intimacy of the space. I love that this is a family run business. You can definitely feel the love in that place. The servers are also excellent! The food on its own, without comparison is good. But it (overall) just does not hold up to Santorini. We have been going to Greek Islands for years and just recently visited Santorini. It blew Greek Islands out of the water in every regard. The Saganaki was better and over double the portion size. The salad and bread and significantly better. The gyros at Santorini were served in a pita (as expected) and the meat was much juicer and less dry than at Greek Islands. The green beans and potatoes were also more succulent and flavorful. And oh my god, the baklava. It's much more juicy and flavorful at Santorini. It was no contest. Santorini slayed Greek Islands with each food item we ordered. I love, love, love the service and people at Greek Islands. I will still go there if I need to get Greek closer to downtown. But otherwise I'm making the extra drive to Santorini from now on. At the end of the day, the food itself is number one when choosing a restaurant. I hope that Greek Islands can covertly take a field trip to Santorini and spy to see what I mean. I would love to see them improve their food to be on par with Santorini because I do think Greek Islands has a better atmosphere.

We found this place from 4square while on a trip to Indy. Very close to downtown. Huge portions, and very friendly staff. They do a little fire show when you order one of the cheese appetizers and that inevitably grabs the attention of all patrons. The kids menu is typical greek and the main menu is extensive. One bit of advice. Don't order a greek salad as an entree. Get the a main dish instead, as the side greek salad that comes on the sides of the platters are GIANT. If I was a local I'd eat here often. Glad to have found such an authentic ethnic place during my travels.

The decor is a little dated but the food is great. The servers had a couple of large groups in since it was a Sunday afternoon. But they tag teamed us to be certain we had everything we wanted. We had an appetizer plate and I enjoyed every bit of it. The hummus was a little coarse and my date said she preferred it more creamy. I really liked the spice choice in the hummus. I am not sure I have ever had melitzanosalata but I defintely prefer it over baba ghanoush and I really like baba ghanoush. I had Gyros which were really good but just slightly over salted. My date had Souvlakia and shared a bite with me. Fantastic. Great wine choices but limited on beer. Next time I plan to try a greek beer. Yep, next time. I am definitely going back.

There's a whole lotta lovin' going on here. The building, to me, looks like a home that's been opened to share what mamma has to offer. Were we to visit our friends in Greece I'm sure their welcoming dinner would taste just like this. Baked lemony potatoes and stewed beans would be in abundance. Flaming cheese? Crispy and tart with lemon and ouzo. Cut a piece and wrap in pita. Don't forget to schmear in the drippings on the plate. Avgolemono? Yep. We've had different variations around the country. This is a smooth broth eggy broth with orzo. Don't forget to hit it with an extra squeeze from the lemons. Devour platter? Mousaka, Pastichio, gyros, stewed beans, lemony potatoes, and cheese filled phyllo. Both of the casseroles, mousaka and pastichio, are comforting and easy to slide into. - Note on the staff. They are a well oiled machine. Greek comfort food at it's best, that we've found in Indianapolis.

I decided to treat the 'rents to a nice meal downtown and expand their palates, and Greek Islands fit the bill. Once an old butcher shop, Greek Islands, has been transformed into a cozy locally owned and operated authentic Greek restaurant. One of the biggest pluses is that they have a separate Gluten Free menu and the staff went to extra lengths to make sure there was as little chance of cross contamination as possible. As with any restaurants, you have to have one of their popular dishes, and the Saganaki was it. Plus, it provided a mini show. The Chicken Souvlaki was good. It was almost two much food. The Gyros and the lamb chops looked excellent. I only wish that they didn't have flour and I could enjoy the taste of the dishes. I would recommend making reservations on Saturday night. This isn't your large chain restaurant, so they don't have as many tables as say a Bob Even's. I would also double check if the Colts are in town because of their proximity to Lucas Oil Stadium, traffic could be an issue.

I have been going with my family since 1987. It is my favorite restaurant in all the world. Whenever anyone comes to town I take them or suggest they give it a try. The current owner is George who took over from his folks when they retired. He has kept 100% of the charm I remember from my childhood. The calamari and saganaki are to die for! For added ambiance, go on a Friday or Saturday night when they have a belly dancer.

Meh! I'm not a huge fan of Greek food other than Gyros, but I do like a few things on their menu here. Since I'm not a huge fan, I don't think it's fair for me to review their food...But...The restaurant itself is a different story. The place is small, and in desperate need of an update/renovation! The staff seem friendly and they even have belly dancers to entertain you while you're eating! Also kind of surprised with the pricing of their menu items. Seems to be a bit over priced for that part Indy and for Greek food in general. This is by no means an upscale eating establishment. Overall, It's not bad, but it's not my favorite place to have Greek food.

I cant wait to go here tonight! The food is always great and authentic! My family has been friends with the owners for 30 years, and they are great people! There is a great selection of greek wines and imports, and the atmosphere is fun and upbeat. We do our Christmas dinners here every year. Your guaranteed to have a memorable experience! Opa!!

Came here with friends with a reservation we made the night before. Two of them (thankfully) showed up early & we scored a table. I'd be scared of the wait had we not RSVP'd ahead of time. Service was SLOW. Don't know what the reasons were, but we waited ~20 minutes for the Greek salads / my friend's appetizers, and probably an additional 25-30min for our entrees. Had that not been an issue, I would give them a better rating. They at least kept up with drink refills. Everything was delicious once we eventually got it, and the belly dancer was a nice distraction.

Tyler and I have found a sweet spot for wine tasting. On the Southside of the Circle in Indy, you'll find the loud and crazy yet simultaneously warm, cozy and comfortably cramped Greek Islands. Once you step over the threshold and into the restaurant, you become part of the family. Although we'd been to Greek Islands before - and loved it - the atmosphere of the wine dinner was fitting for us. Family-style seating, with a group of 15-20 other folks, including cousins, employees, miscellaneous relatives and some foodie-types, this dinner was quite the experience. We left in an amazing mood, smiling and not worried in the slightest about the possibility of a hangover on a Tuesday morning. And because there was so much food tasted with the wine, that outcome was practically impossible. From bubbly to bubbly, from soup to salad to shish kabob, I felt perfectly at home. Each course was paired precisely with Greek Islands' food offerings, woody Chardonnay with lemony soup, South American reds with grilled chicken and meat pies. The chef wrapped up the meal with a trio of petite phyllo sweets, filled with mint, cherry and chocolate. You can't just get up and walk out the door, either. A tight, full-bodied hug from Angela S. seals the deal, making sure you know you aren't some stranger, and you are welcome in their "home" anytime. Though I *love* the spontaneously-blazing Saganaki, and the chorus of "Opa!" filling the room, it's that precise feeling of comfort and acceptance the owners and employees exude, paired with a top-notch authentic Greek meal, that will keep bringing me back.

I LOVE EATING HERE!! I can't say enough about The Greek Islands Restaurant. First, the wonderful family that run it are warm and inviting. They welcome you in and then feed you some of the yummiest Greek food outside of Athens. Second is the food. Tonight I had hummus, saganaki, salad and soup. Light and refreshing. My husband and oldest son shared a chicken souvlaki. The perfect blend of spices and tenderness. Truly, if I could recommend one place to eat, it would be The Greek Islands! OPA!!!!!!

If Greek Islands Restaurant were a movie, it'd be My Big Fat Greek Wedding - - to a 'T' (shocker, right?) The food is great, but it's the environment and people that have me coming back for more! Greek Islands "To Do List": 1.) First and foremost, get to know the Stergiopoulos family (brother and sister - George & Angela). 2.) Take a shot of ouzo and join in on the Friday and Saturday night belly dancing 3.) Cross your fingers they do the dish-breaking thing 4.) Order Saganaki (flaming cheese) for an appetizer because it makes all of the neighboring tables curious/jealous 5.) No matter what happens, finish with some baklava love. Opa!

There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. We feel like family every time we walk in and are treated as such! This is a must try if you're GF! The GF options are endless and the staff are very knowledgable!

The food is always fresh.. No frozen green beans here. The ribeye is the best in town, easily beating out the big name and well known steakhouses. The chicken souvlaki is marinated to perfection with just the right seasonings, and the pieces of chicken breast are as tender as can be. Most dishes range between $15-$20 an are easily big enough for leftovers.

The family hit up Greek Islands for dinner last night. I've been eating at Greek Islands for years, but have never written a review. Here it is... The service and food are consistently awesome. Of course we started with the flaming cheese and hummus/pita bread. I have had better pita bread (Santarini's), but theirs is still delicious. The salad dressing is better at Greek Islands than at Santarini's so it all works out! I tried to keep it a little lighter so went with the domaldes. Their green beans are worth a little special recognition...so damn tasty... Everything was very good and quite filling. I was actually only able to eat half my dinner. Yay for leftovers! My dinner companions had the gyros and the meat pie (they did not try to keep it light). Everyone enjoyed their dishes. Greek Islands is a great family owned business/Indy institution. Give it a try!! OPA!!!

I don't get it. I was so expecting to be wowed with Greek food and I was just not. All the great reviews that I made my husband drive across town for...disappointed and underwhelmed. I will say that the service was very good by our waiter and I loved that the owner was sitting out front on the patio. Let me start by saying that I have had all of these dishes before, the flaming cheese, the Greek soup, the hummus, etc but at the Greek Islands they were all just Meh. Best flaming cheese is Pegasus in Chicago, best Greek soup is Pegasus Taverna in Greektown Detriot, and best hummus is Burning Bush Grille in Louisville. Now don't get me wrong, I was not expecting this place to beat them all out but I was seriously thinking I would get a good mix! The soup was not edible. Both of us tried spoonfulls and left it alone - that bad. The hummus - a mediteranian staple, tasted like ground chickpeas. Exactly like ground chickpeas. I didn't get the flavor of garlic, lemon, tahini, cumin, etc. The tzatziki was ok but very plain yogurty - not much cucumber. Hubby had the gyro plate and said it was fine. The one thing we both thought was really good and saved this review along with the great service was the Taramosalata. So I don't know what happened the night we went but it was definitely not 5 star food by any stretch. (And I am not taking off for the women's restroom being out of order and having to use the men's and then having to take the top off to flush the (dirty from the employee who just walked out prior to my going in!) toilet because of the broken chain. But I sure hope they have that situation fixed!)

Opening in 1987 this Greek family run restaurant gives their customers not only the best of truly authentic gourmet Greek cuisines but so much more! They make absolutely certain that their customers are served the best of ingredients that go in their cuisines. While truly everything on their menu is delicious, I am rather partial of the Meat Pie, Calamari, Saganaki, Mama Fofo's famous potatoes & the Spanakotiropita. They review & carefully hand pick the top Greek wines that match with a dish or customer taste. They also offer their customers the ability to indulge in fine beers made & bottled locally from Oaken Barrel and Sun King. Like Root Beer? You must try the locally made & bottled Triple XXX Root Beer! For the tea enthusiast they have their own signature tea that is exclusively from TeaPots 'n Treasures! They also do catering for small to large gatherings; get excited & love to help on fundraisers for worthy causes; and, they even have a belly dancer on Friday & Saturday evenings from 7:30-9:00pm! Some of their customers are so hooked they come in daily; some even lay claim to their own table choice. I didn't know 4 years ago just how that first visit, that first bite, would turn into my loving not just this amazing restaurant but more than that - the whole family. They are not just a local authentic Greek restaurant; they are a blessing to our community!

On a recommendation from a friend my fiancee and I decided to make a reservation for Friday night. The restaurant was very busy when we arrived, but our table was ready and we were sat immediately. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable. I also enjoyed that everyone seemed to work together as a team - anyone who walked by the table was happy to refill drinks, grab boxes, or just ask how we were doing. You can definitely tell that everyone works very hard and enjoys what they do. The food was absolutely fantastic. We ordered the saganaki as an appetizer. The saganaki was tangy and delicious. For dinner I had the chicken souvlaki and my fiancee had the pork souvlaki. Both dishes were excellent. My chicken really was out of this world. The seasoning was spot on and the chicken was very tender. Both entrees came with a Greek salad, green beans, rice, tzatziki sauce, and potatoes. There was more than enough and we were able to take some home to enjoy later. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant! You can tell that they value the community - the owners said hello to almost everyone and they knew everyone's name. The food was excellent but it was the friendliness and warmth of those who work here that really made the Greek Islands stand out. You should definitely give it a try!

This review is simple. I took a young friend of mine here for our Christmas/New Year's dinner, she's 16 and the PICKIEST eater who is unwilling to try anything new. Needless to say, I think I've created a new fan of Greek food! The Basics: Food = Awesome! Service = Awesome! Friday night belly dancer = Awesome! My suggestions: 1) ALWAYS get the Saganaki/Flaming cheese! It's really awesome to see people's reactions to it! 2) Whatever the salmon dish is called, get it. So flavorful! 3) If the belly dancer asks you to dance with her, do it and take photos. 4) Don't forget dessert, a little piece of baklava is the literal "cherry on top" for the big awesome meal you've just devoured. Also worth note, I made a reservation (ONLINE! YAY!) thinking the place might be super packed, but alas, we arrived early and were sat right away! I love it when that happens! I'll definitely be back, there's so much more I want to try!

After walking by this place several times during Colts games, we decided to give this place a try after a game. The place was not very crowded and there were several tables available. Told hostess we needed a table for 2. She wanted to seat us at a table that was right against a steel support column. I asked her for a better table - there were 2-3 empty tables by the front window so I asked for one of those. She informed us that those tables were for party's of 4 and there might be some party's of 4 coming in. (So was the table wrapped around the support column ??) Seriously ?? Told her we were 2 for sure customers ready to spend our money here! After her refusal to give us one of those tables (or any others) we left and went down the street to another restaurant. After eating we walked by Greek Island again and there were those tables at the front window; only one table was occupied and guess what --- By a party of 2 !!! Never Again !!!

Had dinner here last Friday for the 1st time. The place seem smaller than I expected. As or the food, it was good. I had the pork on skewers and the wife had some puff pastry filled with meat topped with some red sauce on top which was really nice, I actually liked her dish more than I did mine. Surprisingly, though skeptical to order it at first, I enjoyed their chicken orzo soup with just a hint of lemon quite a bit. That I can probably eat regularly. Didnt like the baklava though, I thought the sweet filling was a little on the tough side, plus the portion was a bit tiny. I've had this in other places were the filling was much softer. Service was good, the flaming cheese when served presentation is or can be exciting (reminds me of the japanese habachi grill cooking fire show), and the belly dancer was also quite entertaining.

We came in during Super bowl night, so the place was dead. But the staff was very courteous and the food was good. Although it took a little longer than it should've to push out the food considering we were the only customers in house. We ordered the chicken souvlaki, which wasn't as flavorful as I would've liked and the Greek Islands Combo which was pretty good. Overall, I would return.

We went to Greek Islands for their monthly Wine Dinner and it was superb! We really had a chance to get to know our table because there was such a large turnout, we were elbow to elbow. Our table was great, though. We all shared food and stories. The wines were wonderful, for the most part. There was only 1 I didn't care for at the end of our meal. We will definitely do this again. I love the Stergiopoulos family is wonderful and Angela is incredibly welcoming!

Great food and family dining experience. This is the only place in Indy that will make you feel like family. From the time you arrive til you leave, it is a Greek Experience and I am Italian. The belly dancing is very interactive and family friendly with a very knowledgable staff. Sunday for Colts game is a great time as well and a good place to park for colts game. They have some deal where you pay for parking and get some discount if you eat inside. Also you can get beer to go for waliking to the game and it is not overpriced.OPA

It was Saturday and they were slammed. There's no place to stand, save near diners, if you have/haven't-any reservations as you wait for a table. There's a small anteroom, but that's it. The Greek Islands will remind you of better restaurants in GreekTown in Chicago. The food is consistently good, and not edgy. I had stuffed flounder and my date had the "Atlantikos Salmon". Both were very good. We also had an appetizer plate and the various bits were good, if bereft of sufficient pita slices to finish them off. Sides were green beans, which are a Greek restaurant staple and cooked in the expected style, which, yes, is kind of like Kroger green beans in a tomato sauce, and they were fine. I had the rice as a side, and my date-- potatoes, both were fine. For some reason, I inhaled the stuff flounder-- it was nicely done and delicious. The dessert baklava was a stain.... tough and not up to the standards of this place. The brother and sister that run this place make you feel like family. It gets crowded, and it's tough for them to manage overflow. Service was fast, however, and the denominator of food quality is usually pretty high. Superlative? No. Really good though in traditional Greek fare. Vegetarians will find things they like, too.

This visit, I stayed true to my vow to try something I haven't had before. We ordered the saganaki, tzaziki, and florinis to start and could have easily just eaten those three appetizers for our meal, even with 5 of us. Love the fresh pita. While we were chomping on our appetizers is when the waiter came back to take our order - no problem, right? Well, that's also when the Saturday-night belly dancer started her show, making it virtually impossible for our waiter to hear our orders. (Luckily all of our food (gyros and the souvlaki) arrived safe with no errors.) I'm going to go against the grain of the other reviewers, but my table and I did NOT enjoy the belly dancer. I'm not one to judge talent, so I won't comment from that perspective, but the music was loud and it was incredibly difficult to continue a conversation with my table. The dancer would also position herself in one spot for a certain length of time and stare uncomfortably at individuals, I would assume in hopes of a tip - AWKward. I'm one of those people who doesn't tip if I feel it's being solicited. Plus I didn't want to reach into her panty line while I was eating to put the money there...gross. Anyway, the food was ten times better than my initial visit; the belly dancer/loud environment is what cancels out that improvement and leaves the review at a decent 3 stars.

If you are looking for a food critic review...., sorry you will not be getting that from me. I'm here to tell you from a personal review, so here we go.... If you are looking for an authentic Greek restaurant, then this is your place. If you are looking for a wait staff that WILL take care of you, then this is your place. I personally have been there 2 times in the last 30 days and I can say George and his staff are awesome. Now for the food, our strategy when visiting a new restaurant is each person order something different so WE ALL get to try and asses. I have to say the last time I went there on Nov. 24, 2013 was over the top. I personally recommend Greek Islands, as a matter of fact, they are on Facebook, make sure you go by and like their page facebook.com/greekisland… Let me know what you think once you go there and experience Greek Islands for yourself. Peace! -Devin Hunter

We chose this place because it was billed as dog friendly. We arrived to find no tables on the front patio (we figured they'd removed due to heat outside). But the owner's daughter had one set up for us and our two small dogs. She immediately brought out two bowls of iced water and two piles of gyros meat for our very grateful doggies. Loved the dips on the appetizer plate (taramsalata, tzatziki, babaganosh and humus), which were very good. I had the pork souvlaki, which was nicely marinated, tender and moist, served on a skewer along with veggies. My wife had a phyllo dough wrapped ground beef concoction, which she found tasty. We went away stuffed and happy.

This place is kid friendly which I like. The saganaki was delicious. The hummus is interesting. My hubby had this ground beef filled with phyllo and he liked it. I even had their lemony soup and it was delicious. Something I will eat if I'm sick since its very comforting. Their ice cream dessert is delicious. The belly dancer was a nice addition and service is great.

Real deal Greek food in Indianapolis! As a visitor from out of town, I'm so glad I walked a few blocks out of the chain restaurant-filled downtown to this restaurant in the little blue house. Very friendly service. Had the platter with moussaka, pastitsio and gyros. Everything was tasty, fresh, and authentic. They also had a small but interesting selection of beer -- Greek, local, a gluten-free type from Spain and.........Bud Light.

  • Lindsay L.

The food was perfect. I had...well, I don't remember. ..but it was excellent. It was a sampler with moussaka, pasticcio (?), and gyro. And we got the saganaki to start. Great crust on it. It was phenomenal. It's really making me rethink why I always choose Santorini's over here. I'll be back soon. Don't pass up the flaming cheese.

Driving through Indy on spring break we landed here for dinner. Wandered in to their Friday night belly dancing! Very fun! We were able to make a reservation on the fly via open table which was a plus. Got the four dip platter really good but they kept giving us these little baskets of pita. There were 5 of us and a LOT of dip. Quit skimping on the pita people! Great childrens menu and big portions for my 9 and 11 year old boys. Great Tatziki, good house wine and fast service. Dinner, a show and great photo ops of boys and the belly dancers. Thumbs up!

Opa! Start the meal off with flaming cheese! Sooooooo good. The humus is also top notch, and I'm humus picky. :o) This family owned restraunt is cozy and warm (at least a 10 degree difference than outside), which is awesome for those cold Indiana winters. Staff was helpful, friendly, and seemed to enjoy working there (you'd be suprised how much that affects service). The lamb gyro is awesome (as it should be), even the chicken gyro was tasty. The toppings are plentiful and fresh; and if I could live only on tiziki sauce, theirs would be it! I will be visiting again, that's for sure!

We just moved to Indianapolis from New York City and this is the first restaurant we have experienced in Indy. After doing some research on Yelp we decided to try one of the two Greek restaurants with the highest reviews, we opted for Greek Islands The restaurant is located a bit off the beaten path but it's not too bad, it has ample parking and the building is quite picturesque from the outside, the "Greek Blue" painting is a nice touch. Once we went in it was a different story, the walls were dull colored and the lighting was bleak. We were promptly sat down after entering the restaurant and we ordered two "Marathon" Greek beers, lagers, pretty delicious. So far it's ok. A thing to note, the prices have gone up since the menu was posted on the website. That is one of the first things I noticed, then we decided to order the flaming cheese , Saganaki, which came with 1 piece of pita split in 4, not too exciting. The whole flaming cheese experience was somewhat cool though, but once it is served with just 1 piece of pita the experience becomes dull. On to the entrees. I ordered the Around the Islands, which is sort of a sampler and my girl friend ordered the Chicken Souvlaki. We were served salads and bread before the food came and afterwards the main dishes were served. Before this happened though there was a Belly Dancer dancing around which was kind of cool and entertaining. That said, the belly dancer was not the only person showing a belly around, what I presumed to be the owner was also walking around showing his belly , a big one at that. He seemed very amiable and easy going but then he started talking politics very loud and I did not like that. I am trying to eat in your restaurant man, why are you bringing politics into the plate? (pun intended) So the food arrived and it was actually pretty good, except for the green beans which were obviously canned green beans. I don't know about you, but I don't go to restaurants to be served canned goods... I can easily go to Kroger and serve myself the same exact thing for 69 cents. Also, if they use canned green beans it makes you wonder where else are they cutting corners regarding food quality... very suspicious. This canned vegetables ordeal is reason enough for me not to go back... and then we ordered desert, baklava, not impressive at all, it was dry and hard and just not too sweet. I've had better baklava for a dollar, and this one was $2.50. In conclusion, the whole experience was a bit underwhelming... I've had Greek food at the same price point that blows this one out of the water. I think I'll hop to the next island next time I am in the mood for Greek.

Once again, George and company have hit it over the fence. I've been around Indy and tried a lot of ethnic foods and flair. Greek food has a soft spot for me since it is much like classic Italian establishment's food personifies the culture. I am so impressed with Greek Islands on 906 South Meridian, 317.636.0700. A quick look on the outside and you start to get a feel of the islands: festive white's and blue's. Plenty of parking and situated just south of another Indy landmark, Shapiro's, Greek Islands is a "must go" for any "foodie" in Indianapolis. Each and every time, George's presence is felt in the food, atmosphere, and he is bound to visit your table to make sure your experience is top notch. On this visit, I took my wife for a date night. She is relatively new to Greek cuisine, so she is not as adventurous. That's OK since George and Wesley (waiter) were there to describe in detail what a "toe in the water" patron should expect. The traditional menu may look daunting in description, but it is well thought with all the typical favorites and even some new spins that are bound to earmark why Greek Islands should be the #1 stop for Greek Food around this city. We started the night off with SAGANAKI, which comes out FLAMING with a very eye-appealing presence. Once the flames goes out, the entire restaurant cries out, "OPA!" If you are hosting newbies, be sure to start off with MEZEDAKI COMBO. It displays a wide variety of starters and is great over conversation, wine, or traditional Greek beers. My wife had the AROUND THE ISLANDS entree featuring: A tasty combination of Moussaka, Pasticchio, Gyros and pita bread and I dove into the GREEK ISLANDS COMBINATION entree: Moussaka, Pasticchio, Dolmades, Gyros, Spanakotiropita, and Tiropita. Like I said, if this all looks foreign to you, the staff will explain each item as well as great pairings to make your evening memorable. Wesley talked us into the AVGOLEMONO soup: A tasty base of chicken stock with egg, lemon, and orzo pasta. Mama Fofo's family recipe! Served hot and delicious. When it comes out, try it just as it is or add some fresh-squeezed lemon and pepper to enhance the experience. This soup has to be tried. We even took two home for later. While we dined, we saw evidence of the years of Greek heritage, pride, and personality throughout the dining room. George navigates the room to greet each and every guest so that you feel like part of the family. Somewhere in the back, the magic happens. Plates clank, the bustle of waiters float around the floor, and a belly dancer and festive music are bound to make an appearance...Jamila Ali is a crowd favorite, but a few other dancers make their way about the room on different days. The Greek Islands, in my opinion, has a different and unique flavor about their cuisine. I've yet to find a menu items that I have not enjoyed. Their KORINTHIAN SPECIAL: lamb chops, EXOHEKO: Pork loin sauteed in a dry wine with celery, carrots, and peas, wrapped in buttered phyllo with cheese and baked to Perfection, or Chicken Souvlaki: Two skewered, hearty bites of grilled, marinated chicken breast are other items that are bound to excite your taste buds. Listen, I've been around Indy and have tried the very best in restaurants. I'm here to say, if you don't try Greek Islands, you are not experiencing life. This restaurant screams personality. The garlic, olive oil, lemon, oregano, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and other herbs and spices are very distinct in their dishes. How can you take some simple ingredients and elevate lamb, beef, pork, chicken, or fish to a new level? Greek Islands has mastered the recipes to leave you wanting to plan your next visit. So glad I keep returning to a real Indy landmark that boasts, "Come in as Strangers, Leave as Friends!" You truly feel like one of the them having a family dinner in one of their homes.

BEST GREEK IN TOWN! The Saganaki is a must! I've never left hungry or disappointed. The price is great- you get a ton of food. The atmosphere is fun and family-oriented. Belly Dancers are always entertaining. I love the Pastichio and meat pie most. And dont forget the baklava!

I'm going to abstain from recounting the Greek economic woes I flung across the table during our dinner on Saturday. I will say though... the saganaki almost took the house down. The ceilings here are somewhere around 8 feet and well, the flame was eight feet. It made me wonder... do Greeks take risks in all matters from housing to lighting cheese on fire with Canadian whiskey and how often do they pay off? Rewards seem to thrive in their risk taking. The house still stands after I'd assume about an average of 20 cheese fires a night. Everyone loves cooked cheese on bread. Everyone loves-loves-loves a giant flame ignition of cooked cheese. A note on Saganaki: it's $7. I'm not too sold on its value at that price. I understand the price point... but... what if they took the same cheese, marinated it in the whiskey, added herbs, wrapped it in lamb bacon, then, if they'd like, light it on fire? That seems like more of a fair trade (note: this isn't this restaurant's lone situation... this goes for all Greek restaurants). Greek food isn't my ilk. Yes, it's flavorful, it's meat forward, meat on skewers and uses copious amounts of olive oil. But... there's always something lacking -- like either the meat in its simple form that has so much flavor or using flavors that alter the profile of the meat enough you notice (think: garlic). Or maybe I haven't been introduced properly (again Greek Islands isn't alone on this). Nevertheless, often times there's something on the menu that I'm down for. Rather than feeling like I had to order something outside of my wheelhouse, they had Kota: half chicken slow roasted with herbs and oils, served with potatoes and greens. I was down with this bird. For $14 we split the dish and had plenty for each of us. There was a crazy dessert honey pie.... to the point: recommended. After an appetizer, a split entree, a dessert and two drinks we walked out paying $36 before tip, $43 after. Hmmm... I wasn't counting when we were going through the meal because I was like, like most, "well we're splitting the entree." Continually, food costs in Indy -- dining out food costs in Indy -- don't match this whole "low cost of living" ideal. For that same $43 we could have had 4 local pints and two mac n cheese topped giant dogs. Now... I'm not asking them to change their prices. The point is... this dinner made me really step back and think about how much I just spent. Now there was a belly dancer and near catastrophe of a high chair baby's hair being ignited by the commitment to flaming cheese, and you just can't put a price tag on that experience now can you? I'll be back to witness more risks and reward myself in dolmades.

Great food and amazing service!!! Took some coworkers for their first foray into Greek food and we couldn't have been happier. The staff was friendly, patient and funny. The food was so delish! Will definitely be back!

Very quiet when we ate there. Food was ok. Gyro was preprocessed and salty. The moussaka was very good. Flaming cheese is good too. Everything else was mediocre. Large portion size and not too expensive. I wish the waiter would clean his fingernails - he must be a mechanic during the day.

I love this place! The food is fantastic....I've tried just about all the appetizers and liked them all, even the occasional calamari (also as an entree, ask for it as it is not always available, last time I had it, it was cooked perfectly). Of course, there is the always popular saganaki...OPA! Try the avgolemeno soup, mmmmm. Some of my favorite entrees are souvlaki, mousaka, pasticcio, Kota, Exoheko, the salmon dish, the new cod dish, well, there's a couple that I still haven't tried yet, but so far everything has been excellent! Gyro's are mouthwatering, too. Ocassional wine dinners, lunch specials, weekend belly dancers...George, Angela and the staff really make you feel welcome, like part of the family. I hope they are around another 25 years!

I've been eating at this place for over 20 years, so they must be doing something right. It's my pick over Santorini everytime. If they only had the tender, marinated Lamb Kabobs served at Hella's, there'd be no reason to go anywhere else for Greek. But as good as their Gyros (with just the right amount of crispiness) and Moussaka are, maybe my favorite dish is their Greek Spaghetti - combining the quality gyro meat with their deeply-spiced sauce. Add in the genuine hospitality of the crew, and you're guaranteed a great meal.

Love this place. I come here all the time with my parents. They always have good food at a very reasonable price. It's family run too, and the owners are always there.. Makes you feel like you really are on a Greek Island ;) Definitely try the stuffed grape leaves and any of the gyros!

so dark i couldn't see the menu, but that may be for the effect of the flaming cheese, which we barely saw because they put it out before getting to the table, understaffed (they were "slammed" that night) the 3-4 appetizer plate tasted & looked all the same, boring, although if you want to see our friendly overworked waiter Bob run at breakneck speeds, almost worth it! The salad vinaigrette was interesting but I'm not going back for salad

The food was decent but nothing to write home about. All of the adults there, waitstaff and kitchen, were in their 20s. I know this place used to have a great reputation with the original owners, but the kids/grandkids (I assume) don't seem to care as much. The atmosphere seemed tired and uninterested. My waitress was a bit on the dullard side to boot. I thought I would give Greek Islands a try since the building is cute and the reputation was good, or used to be. I would eat there if I had a compelling reason, such as someone insisting, but I wasn't impressed to go there again on my own volition again. Santorini is still the king of Indy Greek food. Back to Santorini I go.

The best Greek restaurant I have EVER been to...and I have visited many! A great low key atmosphere with huge helpings and reasonable prices. Everything is amazing!!! My favorites are the tzaziki sauce, tiropita, gyros, saganaki, and the most AMAZING Greek potatoes that taste identical to my Grandmas! One of my favorite things about this restaurant is that the food is never off, if I go there and order a meal and love it.....I will love it the next three times I order it! Try this restaurant, and then try it a second time and a sixteenth, it is well worth it!

Clearly, the Greek Island and Santorini are in a battle for best Greek food on the South side. I would give the nod to the Greek Island on food and Santorini on atmosphere Maybe the Greek Island need a fire to update, as another reviewer put it, its tired, and I would add, drab interior. The food, however, was excellent. The Katos looked superb and the member of our party who ordered it was in the "Clean Plate Club". The belly dancer was a great surprise addition.

Favorite Greek restaurant in Indy of the 3 I've tried. Yes, it is a small place, but the folks who own/run it are very hospitable and make sure all are well taken care of. The menu selection and quality of food are terrific. I enjoy the small, family feel to the place. My wife and I find it to be a nice, romantic place for dinner. I recommend getting reservations.

Anytime I'm within a 30 minute radius of Indianapolis I will go out of my way to visit Greek Islands. I've yet to have a bad experience there. I've tried several items on the menu, but my favourite (hands down) would have to be the florinis. I've tried desperately to replicate them at home, but to no avail. Greek Islands also serves a frozen chocolate ball (to which I do not know the name) but my friends and I refer to it as the Chocolate Egg of Happiness. Just try it, and you'll understand.

This restaurant is amazing! The owners and staff treat you like family from the moment you walk in the dorr. The Greek cuisine is amazing!! The Saganaki (flaming cheese) is the best you can find anywhere. Perfect texture and taste. Kreatopita (meat pie) and Greek Spaghetti (made with the perfect combination of lamb and beef) are absolutely amazing. The sauce myst be an heirloom Greek family recipe as I have not had a more tasteful or distinctive sauce with these dishes. The other traditional Greek dishes are also excellent, as I have enjoyed evertthing I've eaten at this restaurant. If you have left room for dessert, Angela's baclava is second to none! Viva Greek Islands!

It was all good. I had the souvlaki, my date had the Greek spaghetti. Both were very tasty. The souvlaki came with a sauce but there was enough spice on the food already, so it wasn't needed (but did taste good). Plenty of music--a lively atmosphere. Will be back.

We ate at Greek Islands last weekend for my friend's birthday. I will say that I still prefer Santorini's. We had 4 appetizers - spanakopita, the "dip" sampler, a tzaziki and the saganaki. Everything was decent and I really enjoyed the caviar dip which I wasn't originally planning to eat. The greek salad was pretty good, although the feta was mild and left a little to be desired. We ordered the gyros plate and souvlaki. Both were perfectly fine. Nothing blew my mind though the way the food does at Santorini's. The potato and green beans and way more mild than Santorini's. Maybe I just prefer my food with more vinegar than they use at Greek Islands. The service was great. We had a reservation for 8 which was easy as pie. The parking was a bit of a mess due to the game at Lucas Oil, but it was alright. Also, you can't beat having a belly dancer on Friday nights. THAT is cool.

Just visited this favorite Greek restaurant on South Meridian for the second time this weekend. I had never been there on a Friday, so was a bit surprised to see a friendly belly dancer traversing the small space. She recruited one woman and a small girl to dance with her, and I sunk in my chair a little so as not to be next pick. As for the food, it's tops. I had the Kota, baked chicken with potatoes and green beans. If you're a fan of the more acidic Greek-style green beans stewed with tomatoes, these manage to keep the tangy factor at bay, which my dining partner appreciated. The chicken was a little dry, but mostly on account of being breast meat. Crusty bread and vinegary Greek salad are simple pleasures here.

Last night was hafla night at Greek islands! Every 3rd Thursday of the month they have live entertainment from Il Troubadore. I had gluten free saganaki (not always available but I always ask and got lucky this time!) YUM! Dolmades and hummus. My love had his favorite -the meat pie with perfect crispy phyllo dough, oh how I miss that! The live music was unique and great, as usual, and there were several bellydancers and other diners who got up to dance. It was a fun fun night.

I absolutely LOVE this place!! =) I'm an avid Greek/Mediterranean lover and have been to many Greek restaurants...this is my favorite. Maybe I'm set in my ways, but I ALWAYS get a greek salad w/feta, saganaki and Pastachio (Greek Lasagna). My family and I usually dine here together and always get a bottle of the House Greek White Wine-- To die for!! =) My husband is more unpredictable and likes to try something new everytime. He raves about the stuffed tilapia and tiropitas. A nice touch is the belly dancers...they are so nice and do a great job of getting everyone envolved. I would def. reccommend visiting on a Friday or Saturday night! Every time I eat here the owner(s) come out and greet guests, talk, and always have a friendly thing to say. LOVE LOVE LOVE!! This restaurant is family owned and you can tell... it has wonderful energy and though small it is homey...and I like that!!

The thing that stands out about Greek Islands is that the servers are always a little over zealous (is that redundant?). I do like friendly waitstaff, but it can occasionally be a bit much. But the food here is good and there's something quite cozy about this little blue house on south Meridian. I go here for a comfort experience. Like Nicole, I think that Santorini will always beat Greek Islands on the food front, but if you want a change of scenery, you can't go wrong here.

Yes, this really is as good as it gets, at least around the B-Belt, for Greek food. With all the standards, as well as some pretty unique dishes, this is a must-try for Indy diners. They even bust out the belly dancers, which humorously surprised by date, as we were just getting up to leave when ol' girl came by and started shakin' it. I had to hold back the laughter to the point that I was about to explode. The timing could not have been better. Seriously, though, the food here is excellent. I highly recommend sticking around for the whole experience, appetizer through dessert, and get the 'fried cheese' appetizer. You'll be blown away ; ) Located just south of downtown on Meridian, there is easy parking on site and despite the area being somewhat confusing because of the way the streets go, it's pretty easy to find. Just map it out online before you go so you can get the turns down.

Excellent Greek family restaurant with a terrific menu. We went for lunch this week for the first time, but it will not be our last. Kudos for the flaming cheese and gyros. We'll go deeper in the menu with more visits in the future. Without a doubt, the best Greek food we've tried outside of Chicago.

The wife and I were going to eat at PF Changs - but a Colts game had just let out and it was insanity downtown. I turned the truck around and we headed out of the madness in a search for a nice place to eat. We stopped at the Greek Islands restaurant on a whim and we were not disappointed. The people were friendly and the food was excellent. We'll eat there again. Definitely.

I came here on a weekend night when I was visiting on a business trip. There was belly dancing and awesome Greek music. In typical Greek style people came in and hung out after closing. The owners were very friendly, as was the staff, and the food was your standard Greek fair. The ambiance on the weekend was great. It's dark so I would recommend it as more of a night spot.

Wow, did this place ever rock. I experienced it as the perfect late-night ending to an impromptu trip to the symphony. For starters, the service was wonderful. Our waitress was friendly and charming without being overbearing. The food was equally pleasing: we ordered a hummus, an appetizer gyros plate and a caviar dip, the name of which escapes me. I was a little skeptical about the caviar dip, but my friend talked me into it, and I was pleasantly surprised. If you're somewhat turned off by the grainy texture of straight caviar, you might still like this dip--it's very creamy. The pita bread was like heaven on Earth, and the heady bottle of red wine that we sprang for was worth the money. I realize that's easy for me to say, since I didn't pay for it, but I know that he would agree. :) Don't skip this one. If you're a North-sider like myself and don't get down to the South side enough, this is the first place you should check out. I can't wait to come back for dinner.

I'm one of the few who prefers this place to Santorinis. I judge a restaurant by its most recognizable food, and Greek Islands does Saganaki, greek salad, spanakopita, and gyros RIGHT. It's a small dining room, so you might want to call ahead for larger parties. But they've always managed to make it work, and the food has always been delicious. They have belly dancers at dinner on the weekends. The music isn't too loud to interrupt your dinner, and the show is good. The portions are big enough to fill you up. This place is family owned, so they go out of their way to make sure you have a good time and everyone is happy. It shows in their service and their food, and I think they're the best because of it.

I gave Greek Islands another shot after a really bad experience about a year and a half ago and several less than mediocre experience before that. I was hopeful, but unfortunately, Greek Islands did not deliver. I felt the food was bland and, for the $16 I spent for lunch, the only thing that was plentiful was the salad - but all it contained was a lot of iceberg lettuce. The spanakotiropita was extremely lacking and the tiro part was more reminiscent of warm cottage cheese. I am sorry to report I would not return.

George and Angela you guys are the BEST! You have really done great with your gluten free menu. It was so great to have saganaki again with hubby and child both being able to enjoy it. The lamb chops were large, tender and juicy and just melted in our mouth. The chicken souvlaki was just perfect for our 8 year old son. Not to mention the feta cheese appetizer. Yes we ate the feta appetizer and the saganaki (we were on cheese overload but they were great). Our family is really grateful to restauranteers who take the initiative to make dinners that we can all enjoy and look forward to. IF you guys were located a bit closer we would be there way more often. If anyone is looking for gluten free and great authentic Greek food in Indy go to Greek Islands. After several years of enjoying your restaurant before we found out our son was a Celiac, it's wonderful to know we didn't have to give up one of our fave places in Indy. Thank you thank you thank you!

Absolutely AMAZING! Once you visit, you will be hooked. We went in as strangers and left friends. This restaurant is family owned and family ran. This is the real deal in authentic Greek food and atmosphere. Food is amazing and made from scratch. We stayed three hours just enjoying the food, the atmosphere and talking with the family who owned it. So friendly! I just cannot find the words to fully describe this hidden treasure of a restaurant. Definitely worth finding, tucked away on the southside of the city. Belly dancers come in for entertainment on the weekends. Family and child friendly!

Opa! This authentic Greek restaurant offers more than its wonderful menu of modestly priced dishes. It offers an environment of family, friends, and good times! With such an ethnic flavor, this south side foodery delivers the best. My dinner favorites were the mezedaki combo, florinis, and the Greek Islands combo. Don't forget to splash it down with a Greek coffee, or maybe a couple beers. (The Athenian is a great Greek lager.) Visit once and you become friends, visit twice and your family. Greek Islands gets five stars from the average guy!

Greek Cuisine

Greek food is a fine melody of the finest pressed olive oil, fresh fermented bread, colorful vegetables, juicy meat, sea food all cooked in spices and fresh rosemary. The people from Greek were great scholars who aimed to excel in everything they do. The results are quite visible in their food as they are the inventors of olive oil which is beneficial to health. Greeks also made different type of wines from the best quality of grapes fermented in controlled environment.

Today, you can find hundreds of restaurants offering authentic Greek food or popularly termed as Mediterranean cuisine in New York city alone. People wait in line to taste the exotic Greek dishes like saganaki, taramasalata, souvlaki, loukoumades, spanakopita, moussaka, and many more. One thing which most people like about these authentic Greek dishes is abundant use of lemon juice, olive oil, fresh rosemary and sea salt. A smart mix of few ingredients can virtually take you on the pebble streets of beautiful city of Greece.

For those who don't have time to enjoy fine dining should try tasting the famous souvlaki with pita which is type of meat dish, also a trademark Greek fast food. For those who are vegetarian, or vegan can try different versions of Greek Salad. So, if you wish to enjoy a hearty yet healthy meal that tastes divine then try dining at the best Greek restaurant in your city. Greek cuisine not only tastes good but also help maintain your body in a natural way through healthy diet.
