The Clay Oven Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Indian food and cricket are the two things that my British spouse misses most about the UK. You can imagine our surprise when we had lunch at The Clay Oven. Not only was the lunch, including heady cups of masala chai and mango lassi, incredibly flavorful but the owners love of cricket equalled ours! There is a great lunch buffet on Sunday and many vegetarian and vegan options. My son says that the chicken Tikka masala is great and is the goat curry. I loved the aloo baingan (potatoes and eggplants). The naan is cooked to order and comes out piping hot. Do yourself a favor, whether you are a seasoned foodie, or a first time novice, try The Clay Oven to experience wonderful Indian food.

I hate buffets. I just do. It's not you, it's me. I phoned before we stopped in for lunch to see if you could order off of the menu and, yes, that was available. So we went in, but decided to take a look at the buffet before ordering. I have to tell you, it was so fresh and looked so good, we got it. The buffet was delicious. The cold salad and chutneys were great. The hot entrees were delicious and I was able to try a few different things. The bread was brought fresh to the table. Service was quiet, but fine.

Zero was not the option given else I would have rated this restaurant zero...no one behavior ( especially restaurant owner and his servent) good their seems like they vent out thier frustration on customers. ..and they eavesdrop the conversation too ..it was seriously annoying. . Now comes to food....its yukk there. .you feel like leaving everything behind..please do not go there to waste your money

Maybe the best Indian food outside of Delhi. The butter chicken and lamb vindalu are spectacular. The buffet is only lunch on the weekdays.

The worst food I had in Indianapolis..... Never ever try Goat biriyani... Don't know how they name a dish as biriyani which is not even 10% equal to normal biriyani.... I will definitely restrict my friends going here....

I've had a lot of Indian food in my life. In fact, I went to London and visited the Indian Mile there. I saved the business card from the place I visited there so I could return when I go back to London. The food was delicious. I'd not found anything even close to comparable back in the states since my return in 2011. Three years later - enter The Clay Oven. This place was amazing. We visited during lunch and got to sample a lot of the foods from the buffet. The flavors in ALL of their dishes were just phenomenal. The only thing I would say is that the rice on the buffet should be changed more frequently so it doesn't dry out.

Friendly owners, flavorful food, relaxed atmosphere...I love you Clay Oven. This is our newest go-to Indian restaurant. We've had around 20 different menu items. We've eaten in the restaurant and carried out. Everything we've had has been amazing. The standard Butter Chicken, Chicken Biryani, Chicken Vendaloo are all on point. I think my current favorite is the mango chicken. Slightly spicy with a sweet twang. Their samosas are really good too. Ask for mango chutney to go with them. You won't be disappointed. They make a tasty mango lassi and also serve Indian beers and wine. We've had the merlot a couple times and have really enjoyed it. I don't even like Merlot, but the one they serve is hard to pass up. The little sugar syrup donuts are soooo good. The rice pudding is also worth trying. Oh, and some of the best garlic naan we've ever had. We have not had a bad experience. This food actually has flavor and they will provide you with the right level of spice. So many places tone spice down for American pallets. Not here. You get what you ask for and I love that. The owners are always on-site and very personable. They only offer a buffet for lunch - no menu ordering. We tend to lean toward menu ordering so have only had the buffet once. It was good, but not as good as customizing your tastes on the menu. We have not been to another Indian restaurant since trying The Clay Oven. It's that good.

The lunch buffet is pretty good. I would like to have seen more than 2 meat dishes but overall I was please. The carrot stuff (sorry I don't know the official name lol) was amazing.

I was around for the lunch buffet and was really pleased by the selection of vegetarian items. Not just a bunch of channa and lentils either. Dishes with actual vegetables in them. I thought the spice level was good throughout all the dishes. They had the best gulab jamun that I have ever eaten anywhere.

Words cannot express how much I love this place. Best Indian Food in Indy hands-down. This place is a treasure. Great service, amazing food, clean, and priced nicely. The server made sure we did not need for anything. My husband and I always walk out happy. Chicken Tikka Masala is my favorite. My husband loves the fish tikka. We also frequently get the dinner for two, which I highly recommend for first-time diners.

I have visited this place thrice and food was just OK . Not that great and not too bad. Worst part is the owner and staff were discourteous, rude and passed comments when they " overheard " us. The customer handling was so bad that we couldn't believe it. They are not open to feedback and are very very rude. They lost 15 regular customers today. They ruined the farewell party of a colleague. NO ONE SHOULD VISIT THIS PLACE. Owner is " moody", yelp should add a parameter on which we can see how's owner " mood " today. Will he fight or treat us nicely. Horrible experience!!!!!

The Clay Oven was a let down! They are a little on the expensive side, and the food is not worth it. I went there for the weekly lunch buffet which is $8.99. I was the only one there which should have told me something. The good: the inside is nice and fairly clean. The Naan was good but everything else was just OK. The main thing for the food is the seasoning. This place is on the bland side. The positive is that it will appeal to individuals that want their Indian on the bland side. It is a fairly small selection of items, but should have a little something for everyone. The wait staff was attentive. A two for the food and price and a four for the service and décor. This is the reason for my three star rating. If you are bored of chain restaurants and think for yourself and are not manipulated by millions of dollars in TV commercials to make yourself believe you have to eat average to below average overpriced food at some chain restaurant, I am one of you. Let's all keep supporting the true food scene in Indiana.

Decent. I went for lunch and the buffet was good...mild, but that's normal for a buffet. I've definitely had better Indian food, but it's decent. If you've never had Indian before the buffet is a good introduction to a number of dishes. I was a little disappointed in the service. We stood by a hostess stand for several minutes with no one speaking to us, then finally just wondered up to a woman and asked if we just seat ourselves. She gestured towards a table and walked away. We finally just went up to the buffet and after bringing our plates back had to ask for water, napkins, and naan. It took a little while to get them and each were delivered one at a time-plus I actually had to ask for napkins twice. To be fair she seemed to be the only one doing anything, including taking phone orders....but I don't feel as if understaffing should be my problem, they should have enough people to properly serve customers. Thankfully it was a buffet where you mostly serve yourself. I would probably eat here again, but with all the other Indian options.....maybe not.

If I'm eating Indian food, its from here. The owners treat you like a friend, and feed you like you're family.

Hands down my favorite restaurant in Greenwood (well.... it's tied with Yats). The Indian food is too DIE for, it's spicy, scrumptious and all around heavenly. The staff is extra courteous, always eager to accomadte special needs or questions. The biggest draw is that they have a pretty huge vegand and vegetarian menu (which is a rarity in Johnson County). The location is small which makes it appear even cozier and perfect for date nights. I can't recommend this place enough. Also, the garlic naan. Eat it, eat all of it!!

    (5)
  • Joe S.

Excellent lunch buffet! I liked the variety of items available. Lots of vegetarian options available. The naan wasn't anything spectacular though. Definitely worth giving this place a shot.

Food is really good, Service and attitude : bad. The front house of this restaurant don't know that their rudeness keeps potential customers away. I went there with two of my friends who are mixed race couple (one Indian/one white) to eat. The host asks deliberately (even though they were standing together and I'm standing a little bit away), oh are you two together? (even if the text sounds innocuous, it was a pretty crass comment, and the three of us separately felt the same thing). Its a pity that they don't have basic courtesy or customer service. A review below by an indian mentions the same. Maybe you need to not be Indian to enjoy the experience here, otherwise -- to be avoided.

Just had lunch buffet at saturday noon. I found guy who picks up dishes and rings checks a lot arrogant and misbehaving. He doesn't have manners to talk and said he doesn't care what reviews I am gonna put. I asked for his boss's number to complain and he said he is the boss and he didn't give me his number. Never going to come back to this place , and food wasn't that good. If owner is reading this you need to teach manners to your staff otherwise send them back from where you got them. I think that guy's name was Kumar very rude and misbehaving. No more Clay Shit oven ...

  • Jessica M.

Service was GREAT. Not sure what the previous reviews are talking about. They were so friendly they gave us a free dessert. The food was even better. We ordered a bunch of things including chicken tikka masala and vegetable korma both of which were suggested to us. Everything was excellent! We will definitely be going back.

Our "go to" Indian restaurant. The staff is awesome - friendly, but not hovery. The food is delicious - I could pick at random and LOVE what's brought out. An affordable dinner spot hidden in an overlooked strip mall. Definitely worth seeking out!

Same wonderful people, same wonderful food 2 years later. Recently went to an Indian place in Georgia while on vacation, realized how spoiled we've become by the Clay Oven, and thought it was time to update this review! Do yourself a favor and experience it for yourself.

I'd like to add a star to my earlier review just because the quality of their lunch buffet has significantly improved.

For Indians, this place would be a pretty bad option. Wouldn't recommend and here's why. Food not fresh - The basmati rice seemed it was from the night before. No food (?!!) - For the lunch buffet, when some curries got over, and when we asked for more, we got a response saying the kitchen was closed...at 2:15 pm. In few minutes when there were more customers, the kitchen magically opened again. Taste...less - The taste was pretty bad. None of the buffet items made us feel we should be back here. No reason to be here again. Want Garlic naan during buffet? No issues. Just pay extra and they'll have it to you. And very few items on buffet. This is the least options I experienced for any Indian buffet in US. And believe me, I've been to many Indian restaurants in US. Enough reasons not to go back to this place. I think this review might be more appropriate for Indians though. Not sure.

Really enjoyed the buffet-a taste of everything! Delicious chicken tikki masala and chicken curry. Could not stop eating the carrot pudding (sweet like candied yams) or Gulab Jamun (syrup dough ball type deliciousness).

Randomly went to this restaurant last Friday. The staff was wonderful and very helpful - I have food allergies and the kitchen and wait staff were very accommodating. Looks a little outdated, but don't let the stilted appearance scare you off... The food was very good and authentic. The family style service was great. Amazing naan!! It doesn't come with the meal, but be sure to order it! Expansive menu - something for everyone. Definitely would eat here again if I'm ever randomly in the Greenwood area.

The Clay Oven is a FANTASTIC restaurant! This was my 3rd visit here and I will definitely be coming back again. I had the Alloo Baigan and wasn't disappointed! The vegetables were prepared just perfect, the spice was as I requested & the roti was fresh. The service was very friendly and attentive- we were immediately seated and had our needs attended to.This seems to be the only restaurant around that has Vegan options listed- many in fact! I highly recommend The Clay Oven for any & all!

I wandered in looking to kill an hour before a movie, and wound up enjoying the best Indian food I've had in years. Since I hadn't been in previously, I ordered the chicken tikka masala, everyone's starter Indian meal. Best I've had. There was a depth of flavor and spice I haven't had with this dish, even a surprising bit of cilantro. We complemented the entrees with garlic naan, which was perfectly soft inside and crisp with garlic and spices outside. Crazy delicious. If these two pedestrian items were this good, I can't imagine what else they can do. I will say this: don't base your assessment of their entrees on their buffet. It's good, but it's not indicative of the flavor of the same dish at dinner necessarily. Medium was perfect for us, had a kick, and a good one. Hot will be HOT.

The Clay Oven lunch buffet is good for those new to Indian food. I've been enjoying Indian food for years, so it was a little mild for me. My boyfriend and I took his son to try it for the first time. Thanks to the broad variety offered by the buffet, and the gentle hand with the spices, the Clay Oven offered a good introduction to Indian cuisine. The flavor and quality of the food was very good. I wouldn't venture to say it's as good as my beloved India Garden (not all of the food was warm enough, and it seemed some of it had been sitting out for some time) but I'll be a repeat customer. Unfortunately, they did not have my favorite dish, Palak Paneer, in the buffet, but had at least 6 or 7 vegetarian dishes, all of which I enjoyed. My favorite was the Chana Palak, which had a little kick to it, and the wonderful carrot pudding dessert, which was rich and creamy. My boyfriend's son loved the Chicken Tikka Masala (the usual favorite of those new to Indian food) and raved about the "honey balls" (I can never remember the specific name, but you'd know them by that description if you just saw them in the buffet.) I'm not sure if there's a "children's meal" price, but the server did not charge us the full buffet price for him. I thought that was nice. Our server was pleasant, and kept our water glasses full. The naan is not offered in the buffet, but it's brought in baskets to your table, hot and fresh. It was delicious. I'm so glad we found this place, as it's the only Indian buffet I know of on the south side of Indianapolis. We actually thought it was closed down for some time, but that's because it has some specific hours. The buffet lunch takes place from 11-3, and then they are closed until dinner at 5, which is only plated menu options. We're excited to try dinner, so that we can order our meals spicier than what's typically offered in a buffet. We'll definitely be back.

The service was exceedingly friendly and the food was perfect. Normally my husband and I go to Shalimar in Broad Ripple to get our Indian fix; this time we opted for new and close, and I'm sure glad we did. My hard to please husband said this food was far better than Shalimar. I can't wait to go back and try more dishes.

I tried this on saturday dinner regular menu... I order some paneer masala with simple naan and garlic naan... It took almost 20 min to arrive but the taste was worth waiting... Best panner masala i ever tried in a while... Naan's were totally amazing... Menu bit pricey but taste of food was divine... Then i tried gulab jamun and fruit mango pudding , both dishes were amazing too... I personally talk to cook after eating because i was amazed by the taste of the food... Definitely coming back..

My boyfriend and I were meeting in Indy and looking for a restaurant for dinner, we were both craving Indian and chose to go to Clay Oven. Best decision ever! It was perfect for a relaxed date night and the food was DELICIOUS! In addition, the service was impeccable. The staff was beyond sweet and made the dining experience that much more amazing for us! Thank you!

We have been in search of a good Indiana restaurant every since the one in Plainfield closed. After trying several restaurants in the Indianapolis area and coming away disappointed we were pleasantly surprised when we went to the Clay Oven today. We had the buffet which had a nice variety of foods. The Tikka Masala was my favorite and I really enjoyed all of the vegetarian selections. They brought warm naan to our table which was delicious and for dessert I had a dish of mango ice-cream with whip cream and a cherry which they said was on the house since it was my birthday. Even though we have quite a drive to get there, we will definitely come back. We already have plans for next week.

I have to revise my previous review to five stars because i finally made it here for dinner. I ordered dhal tarka and asked them to make it spicy along with an order of roti. Absolutely perfect and they were able to get me in and out of the restaurant quickly in order to make a flight. Also, ive noticed that they switch up their lunch buffet frequently and have added a potato and roasted eggplant dish that is so good that I am shocked it is buffet food.

I was craving some Indian food and looked up Clay Oven, worst mistake. I walked in and stood for about 10 minutes without being seated. Finally, I seated myself and still no attention from the server. After another 10 minutes the server walks up to me and say, "Do you need something?" I was almost speechless. I told her, "never mind", and left the restaurant. Can't comment on food, since didn't make to that stage, however, minus 5 stars for customer service.

I am a regular here, and cannot say enough kind things about this place. Most importantly, the food is fantastic, I have never been let down. My husband is a chicken and seafood eater, while I am a vegan. It is nearly impossible to find a place where we are equally pleased with our dinner, but neither is disappointed when we come to Clay Oven. I have about 10 different options on their menu. Like most Indian restaurants, you can choose your spice level. It seems pretty accurate, with an occassional veggie dish running a little hotter. Everything is well seasoned without being overbearing, even the curried dishes. Unlike many Indian resaurants, this place has chunks of veggies and meat, it isn't a pile of brown homogenized goop. They are very reasonably priced, and portions are large. It is rare I finish my dish, and normally have enough leftovers for another dinner. I am very surprised at some of the reviews of the staff. Being someone who frequents this place about once a week or so, I have gotten to speak to just about everyone. The owners are great people who remember who you are and what you like. They wave and greet you with smiles, they fuss on my friend's daughter, and will create special dishes for the buffet if they know you are coming. The place isn't perfect; it is in an uninviting plaza that actually kept us from trying it for months, they have typos on the menu. These things just don't matter once you have the food and meet the owners. It is always a pleasant experience and I leave full and happy.

Food is DELICIOUS, hot, fresh, and sliced to perfection. Great naan and roti are perfect with any selection. My favorites are the Chicken Mango Walla and the Chicken Saag. The service is prompt and friendly.

I went for the Saturday lunch buffet and found the food lacking in depth and flavor. The service was also very poor. I had the lunch buffet and the naan that we were promised at the beginning of our meal never came until the very end. Poor show. It was busy, but it seemed like the wait staff just sort of forgot us. Beyond that, the food was just not that good. I've heard it's a very different experience off the a la carte menu, so if I ever go back, I'll do that.

In a sea of chain restaurants on the Southside there are only 3 local places I would recommend. This is one of them. The Clay Oven is not perfect by an means. They struggle with service and take out food is often very heavy on the sauce to meat ratio. You have to be specific when ordering over the phone. I have never eaten from the buffet but the food off the menu is solid. It is consistently very good and well balanced and some of the best Indian I have had in Indiana.

  • Rachel P.

Best Indian food I've had in Indy! Great service, delicious food, and nice ambience. About $15 per entrée but that's comparable to other Indian places I've been. The owners are also nice and remember their customers! I only wish they were open between lunch and dinner!

I would drop down to A-OK now, based on one thing. I have had at least 3 different lunch buffet experiences since my last review where the rice was undercooked. Severely. Crunchy undercooked. EW - ruins the experience completely. Everything else is still uber flavorful though, and the balance is great. Just hard to get past the unforgivable rice issue.

I FINALLY got over to the new(ish) Clay Oven Indian restaurant on Indy's southside/Greenwood area. This place has been in my "bookmarks" for way too long. I liked the ambience - bright and cheery and very clean. But, I didn't care for the way our group was seated on the same side of the restaurant as all of the other patrons, all in booths right next to each other, while the other side of the restaurant was completely empty. Hey guys, the dining room isn't that big - space us out a little bit! The service, 2 gentlemen that definitely were in no hurry, was spotty at first but then a woman server showed up and darn-it if things didn't start running more efficiently. This was on a Saturday early afternoon and there was a lunch buffet available for $8.95 but since I abhor buffets I chose to order off the menu. The menu is huge. Monstrously huge. I was a little overwhelmed but decided that the lamb & eggplant ($13.95) served Punjabi style with chef's special sauce was singing-out to me. And, I really enjoyed it. The lamb chunks in the tasty sauce were really tender. The presentation was nice, it was served in a brass-looking soup tureen but I really feel that the price was way too steep for the serving portion size. I ordered it at a Medium heat level which was just right. I like really hot food but I've made the mistake too often of ordering Indian food HOT and the combination of rich Indian spices and the molten lava heat level creates a ticking time bomb in my gut (no further explanation should be required.) My hubs ordered the tandoori mixed grill ($14.95) at the HOT level which scared me. When they brought that fiery hot platter to our table I went into a coughing spasm the entire time it was sizzling away. But, once it cooled enough to eat the heat level was really pretty tolerable. This dish was really enjoyable, all of the different meats on the platter were perfectly cooked - even the shrimp which it seems like most restaurants ruin by overcooking. The basmati rice that comes with all of the meals, which they refill as often as you like, was delicious. Rice is an important accompaniment of Indian food and they definitely know it. I thought the mix basket of naan breads was ok but I've definitely had better naan. I really loved the vegetable samosa appetizer which was probably the best I've had. The samosa turnovers were crispy and the filling of spiced potatoes & peas was creamy and delicious. The appetizers that we ordered were served with 3 different small bowls: a cool & refreshing mint cilantro chutney, a tamarind sauce and some chopped onions that were in a spicy sauce but not hot spicy. They have some beer & wine available. I was impressed with the beer selection because there were several more offerings other than the commonly found Kingfisher beer. Again, the menu is huge - I counted 23 vegetarian entree selections alone. I thought the overall dining experience was pretty good but their prices are too high. And, I know there's better Indian food in Indy but this place definitely doesn't disappoint.

Like others have said, I wish there were a half-star option. This is a solid, clean and unassuming space that provides a really high-quality buffet spread with solid fare. Both sweet and savory dishes are offered with plenty of sides and chutneys. It is easy to find and the prices are excellent for the great food you get. This part of Indianapolis is almost totally bereft of decent lunch spots, so you should not waste any time and head straight to the Clay Oven.

The WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE of any restaurant ever!! I am a vegetarian and went out with some of my friends. We ordered two vegetarian dishes and and two meat dishes for the four of us. I alerted our server to two of us being strict vegetarians. He brought our dishes and the "paneer chilli" that I ordered looked like a different style - I thought it is their different way to make paneer chilli. I ate a couple of bites and realized it was chicken. So I brought this to the attention of our server. He kept laughing to himself and said sorry in a way that it was a joke. My appetite was completely gone. The manager was completely unapologetic. I spoke to him and said to him how he should be more understanding and sensitive to vegetarians. He was not only unaplogetic, but also spoke to me in a loud derogatory manner saying how he was Hindu too and he ate meat and that how I should be more than happy that I was not charged for my meal. "What else do you want me to do for you?" he said, harshly. I realized there was no point arguing further. Their food might be of average to above average quality, but I would never ever recommend this restaurant just for their exteremely dissatisfying customer service. MOST HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE EVER!

I like this new Indian restaurant very much. I went there recently with my friends. They made the food according to our preferences and the food tasted delicious. We ordered Tandoori Chicken Tikka and butter chicken, both the items were very tasty and flavorful. The decor was nice and ambiance was welcoming. The owner is also very kind. I would like to go again.
