Had reservations here before a recent event @ Lucas Oil. very convenient location. They were charging $30 for parking, so I dropped my wife off and parked a few blocks away to walk there. Seemed a little steep. We ate outside on the patio upstairs. Beers were great. Service was friendly. Split a Tavern salad as an appetizer. It was delicious! Really enjoyed the sweet and spicy walnuts. For dinner I had the Filet Mignon Meatloaf and my wife had the Parmesan Whitefish. Both excellent meals. The Meatloaf had a little sweet/spicy flavor. For dessert, we had a brownie with cinnamon ice cream. With tip and taxes was $75. Will definitely come back for another try.

Very mediocre dining experience. My family and I ate here on the 4th of July, before heading to Victory Field. It was right around the corner from our hotel, so convenience won. I had made a reservation for 5pm thinking it would be crowded, but there were a whole two other diners when we arrived. Upon arriving, there was no one to seat us. Even wondering around, making eye contact with servers, still no one seated us. After five minutes someone finally came down from upstairs and took care of us. Our waitress was non too pleased to be working a holiday weekend, that was evident. She was abrupt and couldn't seem to care less. After ordering, we didn't see her again until our food came. I had the Caesar salad with chicken, very basic, nothing exciting. My husband and brother both had burgers, both of which were overcooked. My parents shared the crab cakes and gouda quesadilla. This is a three star for the simple fact that they really enjoyed their dishes. The crab cakes were much smaller than expected but were apparently very filling. The quesadilla came with a jalapeno mousse my dad raved over. But once again, we didn't see our waitress until she brought the bill. Drinks were dry and we had all very blatantly been finished eating for ten minutes. I had high hopes, but we won't be returning. The food wasn't enough to off put the poor service.

Inconsistent. The meatloaf was really tasty and the temperature was good. After that? The potato was cold. Not room temperature. Cold. The green beans? I'm ok w al dente but they weren't cooked much at all. The salmon and chicken both tasted good but both were overcooked. The tiramisu was very good. The blonde brownie was ok but the carmel had no flavor. Server was average. Nice but missing for long periods. I would not go back.

Hung out at the bar for a social gathering. Nice place, but the parking lot is full fast! Luckily there's that lot down the block, but it's a couple of bucks. Pretty good drink selection. I ordered a bison burger with french fries (couple bucks extra to upgrade from chips -- enough to pay for parking!). The sauce is sweet and tangy. The burger was cooked as I asked which is outstanding! Nice ambiance would go back for sure

Mediocre. I was expecting more from this restaurant and I was disappointed. I did a combo. The Asian salad to start--lacking in flavor and "Asian" elements. The dressing was as pungent as gasoline. Then the main was Pasta Diablo, a lukewarm angel hair pasta whose heat was stronger than its flavor. It came with a choice of chicken or shrimp. I chose the chicken and that was a mistake. Over cooked, chewy, and bland. It also came with a topping of fried calamari which was somehow crunchy and soggy at the same time. The only saving grace for this meal was the tiramisu. If you don't like a soggy tiramisu, don't order this. I do, however, and the flavors were very good. Service was below par. Our server was nice (ish) but often left our drinks empty for much too long. It wasn't busy (on a Saturday night nonetheless) and she was rarely there. She didn't seem to be all that keen on waiting on us. I will not be coming back.

Tavern on South is a good place to go after work for Happy Hour drinks and appetizers. There beer and wine menu is extensive and they have a lot of good appetizers for sharing. Their sandwiches/entrees are nothing special, but they are pretty good. It's kind of hard to park here. If you don't get in their main lot, there are spots where you can double park. Always kind of awkward to wait for the host to figure out who parked you in. There is also a paid garage around the corner if you're desperate. My recommendation, skip it if you can't find parking right away. It's not worth the headache.

Incredibly average for the cost, the best item we had was the crab cake owing mainly to the tasty roulade. I had the bison burger which was fine but didn't blow me away, the wife had the filet mignon meatloaf and really liked it. She also had a salad which she said was very good, for a $73 ticket I would have expected more, for the most part I found both entrees lacking in flavor.

I came here with my girlfriend because we purchased a Groupon a while back. The Groupon was for an appetizer and 2 entrees. The beer selection was mostly local and the day we went it was $1.5 off any Indiana beers. The place is small and provides a romantic intimate feel which is great for a date night. The service was as friendly as anywhere else that you'd expect good service at. So far no complaints! The food: I've heard about the Crispy Duck Wings ($8.50) being very delicious there, so I wanted to try that. Since my girlfriend is a Pescatarian (Vegetarian who eats fish), she could not try any and ordered the Crab Cakes ($12) for herself. I tried a bite of the crab cakes and they were fantastic! The duck wings were....underwhelming. I may have hyped them up in my mind quite a bit, but in the end, they were simply fattier wings that were breaded and fried similar to Hooter's wings. I wasn't impressed with them at all. They do have a choice of sauce to dip them in, and I recommend the Teriyaki over the Buffalo. For entrees, my girlfriend got the Flounder stuffed with Crab ($23) which was actually a piece of flounder wrapped around a crab cake. This would probably have been much better if we hadn't just eaten two crab cakes but fortunately the crab cakes were delicious. She enjoyed her meal but did not jump for joy for the meal. I had the "Death" by Blue Cheese ($29) which was a Filet crusted with Blue Cheese, with Blue Cheese Mashed Potatoes, Blue Cheese Green Beans and a Blue Cheese "Truffle" which was basically a deep fried piece of Blue Cheese. My steak which I ordered Medium Rare, came out Medium unfortunately, but that is OK, I'm fine up to Medium in terms of redness, after that I'd have to send it back. Unfortunately, the cuts of meat they use must not be great as it was not even remotely close to tender like a filet should be. I even had a silver vein in my cut which is odd for any decent cuts of Filet. I imagine this was choice, or maybe select as opposed to prime cut. The mashed potatoes were delicious and flavorful. The green beans were normal green beans and I could not taste the blue cheese element to them. Finally the "Truffle" was absolutely amazing...but then again, how could a fried piece of blue cheese go wrong? Think Jalapeno popper with Blue cheese and no Jalapeno and that is what you get. All in all I'm glad I experienced this place and was happy with most elements, but unfortunately with it being so far from where I live, the fact I believe it is a bit overpriced, and the fact it didn't wow me out of my pants....I doubt I'd be coming here again. It just didn't draw me in enough to become a staple on my list.

This place use to be great but it's taken a nose dive lately. Best thing in the menu are the duck wings. Last time we went the ahi tuna was a weird brown grey color and the sea bass tasted very old. We informed the waiter but he could have cared less and just brought is the check. They get three stars for the beer menu. Great selection. Going you want to drink and get duck wings but eat elsewhere.

First time to Tavern on South in celebration of one of our colleague's birthday. Didn't know that reservations are not taken for outside seating. However, we were seated in front by big windows so we were able to enjoy the sunshine. At times wait staff was slow and not enough folks on hand to handle the lunch crowd. Our waitress seemed to be a stretched in the number of tables she needed to serve. She only answered to our questions, not really offering up any suggestions or expanding on the menu. The pork taco portion was just the right size, a bargain for $7.95-lunch special-3 tacos. Sweet potato fries were excellent and really the highlight of the lunch menu. The bison burger is very very large-could actually be shared-the pizza crust was just a tad too thin and was more of a cracker style than thin crust. Nice portion of salmon added to the Tavern salad-cooked very nicely-flakey. The Indiana salsa was a nice starter to lunch-not too much garlic or spices. Nice to have its own parking lot-but in agreement with another reviewer-it fills up fast. Beer and wine selection seem quite large and several option choices available.

I've been to tavern on south a handful of times for both lunch and dinner. The food has always been delicious and well presented. But, my opinion of the overall establishment varies from lunch to dinner. I keep going back when they offer groupons, but I still don't feel like I'm getting a good value for dinner. Lunch: great specials and prices. If you go with the special, you are looking at about $10 with tip for a filling lunch. Dinner: the pieces are too high. It feels like a sports bar, the servers don't know anything about the beer, and the food you get is priced as if you were at some of the top spots in Indy. $19 for meatloaf with a small, small side of green beans? Seriously? I know it's "filet mignon meatloaf", but come on. At least pile on the veggies. Overall food: the pizza and sweet potato fries are amazing. The meatloaf was tasty, but the bison burger is where it's at. I just wish they had more than brioche buns (which I despise). On the plus side, all bread is scratch made each day. The biggest downfall is service. It's never very attentive and the severs don't seem very knowledgeable about the menu or drink options. During my last visit I asked if they had a specific beer and the waitress handed me her handwritten list of what was on tap. She did earn a bonus point by stopping us from leaving after dinner because they just tapped a keg of 3 Floyd's zombie dust. Overall, I want to give them 3.5 stars, but I don't want to do it badly enough to round up to 4. I'll probably be back, but not in the immediate future.

I always have a good meal when I eat here. I love that they offer whole-wheat tortillas, A variety of vegetables as sides, blackbean burgers and sweet potato fries. The Asian salad was tremendous. I had a bite of my friend's pesto ziti and it was full and complex. The Portabella mushrooms as a side were very satisfying.

First time that I have been disappointed in this restaurant. The fish was rather dry and had to ask for a sauce (none included) and too bland without something. Service was not up to par with the side of potatoes being delivered well after we were eating our meal. I hate to see one of our old favorites falter into just being a good bar with pub grub. Expected more.

Our group of four was in town for a convention and we saw this place a block from the Colts stadium. On a Thursday at 1:15pm there was no wait to be seated. The decor, seating, and everything else is nice. Everything is clean, which is also a big plus. The four of us really just were not overly impressed all that much with the food. I did have the buffalo duck wings, which I do have to admit were very good. If you're going to try anything here out of the ordinary, try the duck wings. The food wasn't bad, don't get me wrong, it just wasn't all that and a bag of chips. Our group reported a bill of $90 (including tip), which I guess is what you're going to pay to eat a block from the stadium on a Thursday.

I wish I had heeded the earlier reviews!!!! We went last night for Valentine's Day. We were greeted promptly and warmly and quickly seated. I was surprised that there wasn't more of a crowd being that it was 5:30 and every other place in town was fully booked. The time is took for us to be acknowledged was pretty bad. Our server passed by us a few times before we were greeted. In between each course (drinks, apps, main) it took quite a while for her to response. Sadly, I never got her name??? She was friendly enough WHEN she was there but she never really was. Food wise, the crab cakes seems okay and my chilled shrimp martini were good but the main course disappointed. My wife ordered the special, Filet and Lobster tails, while I had the rib eye. The Filet was under cooked and I believe the lobster as while. My rib eye with Cajun rub was DEFINITELY lacking flavor. We sent back my wife's. I'd like to thank the OTHER SERVER that realized my wife and I were NOT eating our meals and there maybe something wrong. Regretfully, I'm a nice guy and went ahead a give the standard 18% tip. I wish I could take it back. I guess I need to be more demanding when it comes to my expectations because all I ever ask for is prompt service and a full glass. WE WILL NOT BE GOING BACK!!!!

The Tavern is located pretty near where I work, so it serves as a good lunch spot if we're looking for somewhere a little different. That said, I've never been for dinner and this review is only on their lunch service. So, as far as lunch goes, this place is pretty legit. The service has always been good - quick, but not too quick. Some places tend to drag and suddenly the lunch hour has come and gone and you still haven't gotten your meal. Tavern on South does a good job getting you in and out, but I never feel rushed, which is a hard balance to strike. They also have some excellent food choices. Their bison burger is delicious and always a favorite of our group. They also used to have these really good surf and turf tacos, but I don't think they offer them anymore. They also have some of the best sweet potato waffle fries anywhere and I absolutely love them. The interior is nicely decorated, there are plenty of TVs if you're looking to catch a bit of SportsCenter, and the atmosphere is relaxed. This is a great place to pop in for lunch, especially if you work nearby. Check it out next time the tuna sandwich you brought doesn't sound like it'll carry you through the workday.

I was very excited to try Devour Downtown for the first time as I have somewhat recently moved to Indianapolis. My friend and I picked Tavern on South based on their sample menu. Everything sounded wonderful! I ordered the duck chili, seared Yellowfin tuna with stir fried vegetables, and had the chocolate mousse torte for dessert. The service was quick, but the food was just okay for the prices that we paid. Three courses was $30, but had we ordered these items from the regular menu, it would have been more costly. Duck chili: Okay. It wasn't as chunky and flavorful as I'm used to but it was still good. I requested it without sour cream and it came that way, which always makes me happy. It was nice to have on a freezing cold evening to warm up. Tuna: Yummy! It was definitely the best part of the meal, especially when I dipped it in its sweet sauce. The presentation was deceiving, making it appear like I was getting a lot less fish than I actually did. The veggies were pretty good, but were a little bit on the oily side. Had I just ordered this, it would have cost me $24. I don't think I got $24 worth of enjoyment out of it. Torte. It was good. I'm not chocolate-obsessed, but it definitely hit the spot. There was a white vanilla sauce on top that was amazing. Five stars for that sauce. If the prices were a little lower, I think they might have gotten four stars because my expectations wouldn't have been as high.

I came here one afternoon during lunch while traveling here for work. A co worker who lives around here says it is very good and that he goes here all the time on the weekends to get their beers. When i drove up to the place I loved the location and that it was in downtown near everything. You also get to park a private lot so you do not have to park further away. Walking in it looked fairly new and very clean! I loved that they also have specials and the space was very open. The menu we had was for lunch only whish is great since it narrows down your choices for you when you are there. All the entrees are great as well and you can get something for everyone. They do not just have sandwhiches and salads. I ordered the salmon and asparagus, and for lunch it was a great portion and tasted fresh. The price for lunch was great as well and I also felt great after my meal rather than tired from eating too much. The sides they have for lunch here are also great and they have salads you can get that they make in house and are not as common as they are in every other lunch place. For example, the pasta salad was made with a vineagarette rather than a cream based dressing. Little things like that is what makes this place unique, but at the same time still American. If i moved here I would definitely come here more often to try their dinners and local brewerd beers.

I'm normally a fan of this place from drink to dessert. However lately it's been a miss. Ate dinner here last night and started with sweet potato fries. They were barely warm at best and seemed to have tasted old. I returned them and they brought out another plate....to which I'm convinced they threw in the fryer. Now they were old, hot & chewy. Proceeded to dinner and got the spicy black bean wrap. It was good. I don't think you can go wrong. Kettle chips were slightly overdone and had a burnt taste to them. Grilled pineapple mojito-best part of the night. I'd have to rethink this one in the future when there are better options for the price.

A little in the pricy side but worth it. I had the pecan crusted chicken with wasabi smashed potatoes. AMAZING!

We sat upstairs, not on the patio though because it was cold. Atmosphere wasn't necessarily the source of it's stars, but the food was wonderful! We started out with the Indiana Salsa, which was great, very fresh, and they gave us more chips when we needed them! I split the Margherita Tortilla Pizza and the Southwest Black Bean Wrap, and we loved them both! My mom got the Tavern Salad with cherries and candied asparagus and a vinaigrette with puréed apples in it--very unique and delicious, maybe a little sweet for her diabetic diet. Dad got the BBQ pork wrap with caramelized onions..which was messy but delicious as well. We had a bottle of the Douglas Hill Chardonnay, which was excellent and pleased the palates of all. Our server was very professional, accommodating, and nice. Great location next to the Lucas Oil Stadium! We'd all go back anytime we were in Indy!

It's been a while since I've had the chance to hit Tavern. The first time was for a (read: one) cocktail and a little catch-up with a friend. The atmosphere in the bar was super comfy, the staff awesome and the conversation inspiring, so we stuck around for another round. I had the chance to go back as part of the Young Professionals of Central Indiana (YPCI) speaker series and FINALLY got to taste some of the food. It was SO worth the wait... especially the tomato basil bisque - heavenly. If I could have snuck the whole serving dish from the buffet table, I would have. Alas, I had to settle for a bit of chicken (moist! who delivers moist when cooking for so many!?), awesome salad with a very unique dressing, fresh green beans... I could go on and on. These two experiences were so good that I put a date night on the calendar so Hubby can get a taste.

Both my wife and I had a good experience at Tavern on South. Good people, pleasant atmosphere and good service. That said, we'd recommend that you order your meat cooked one-step above your usual. My Medium-Rare bison burger was almost raw and her Medium was a perfect Medium-Rare.

The food was okay. It didn't knock my socks off. I really felt it was under seasoned. I'm not someone who adds salt to anything, but I had to here. The atmosphere was fine except for the screaming kid, which wasn't the establishments fault. Good service. I'd be iffy on going back. For the price, I would expect it to be way better

Ordered the crab cakes for my first visit here. A beautiful presentation, but they were near frozen in the middle. Sent them back to the kitchen. A new plate came back .... Only slightly warmer. Very disappointing. The bartender was very nice and apologetic, but a thumbs down for this meal.

I was really excited to experience Tavern on South during Devour Downtown and I'm happy to report that it didn't disappoint. Boyfriend and I made reservations and were seated in the bar area. While walking in though, I made a mental note that I should come back here in warmer weather. Looked like a nice patio area that would be fun in the summer! The bar area was nice, although I might have preferred to sit in the actual restaurant - but I"m not that picky to really care that much! We started off our meal with a couple cocktails and shrimp cocktail. Twas good - reminded me of St. Elmo's shrimp cocktail except not quiet so good and not served on dry ice. I also had the spinach salad topped with apple and cheese and yumminess. Tasty in my tummy! For my entree, I had Parmesan-crusted tilapia served with asparagus. UM. YUM. It was a very generous portion of fish and so good. I love cheese and it really was great. Boyfriend got sea bass medallions and steak - his was also really good. The steak was incredibly tender. Tasty tasty tasty. For dessert, we both ordered chocolate martinis (um. yum) and I got the creme brulee and he got carmel cheesecake served with pistachios. Both were delicious. We both left with yummy feelings in our tummies and our hearts. Will definitely be back!

Always have liked this place. On this visit I had the creamy roasted tomato soup with mushrooms and artichokes. It was fantastic, so good I took some home. Also had the black bean wrap which was excellent, accompanied by home made potato chips, which were great. I know, lots of superlatives, but well earned. My friend had a steak dish which he said was good, as well as the soup. There is an outside upper level which from which you can enjoy downtown. I have not been up there. We sat at the bar and received excellent service from the server. Great atmosphere, casual but comfortable. Free parking right outside.Close to Lucas Oil Stadium and Victory Field. No, I don't have a financial interest. lol.

Had a burger today on my first & LAST visit to Tavern on South. 1. It was way undercooked and tasted very ordinary 2. I asked to speak with the manager and a guy name Steve, who I assume is the owner, came to our table and was extremely sarcastic and flat out rude to us when we spoke negatively about our burger. If you're going to run a restaurant are not able to cook a simple hamburger as requested then either get out of the restaurant business or at least learn some common sense and don't get snippy when it's brought to your attention by a customer.

I had never been here and thought I'd bring my friends from out of town here for dinner. While waiting for other friends to arrive, some of us sat at the bar. The bartenders were not friendly at all, and not helpful with choosing a drink; we weren't even given a drink menu. The cocktails we tried were different; I didn't care for them. For dinner, portions were pretty small for the price. One meal had a food item missing from it, and when our waiter was asked to get a refill or other misc. item, he chose to watch tv at the bar instead; ridiculous. Side salads barely had any dressing on them, however, my burger was good, but again, other menu items didn't fit the price. Overall, not the best experience. Probably won't be back.

As long as I have been going to/from downtown and have driven on South St, I was very surprised that I'd never noticed Tavern on South. What a nice hidden gem in the near-downtown area! Ambiance is an upscale, trendy older bar (with the wood), they have many flat screens around the bar areas. We had a large group scheduled for the upstairs area at a peak dinner time and I was one of the first to arrive so the hostesses gladly showed us the way towards the bar. Service, both at the bar and while seated, was fabulous! Everyone was served about the same time and there was no problem with individual checks. I was surprised there was no large group tip added in already. I saw no issues with any food as well, my crab cakes were fabulous too!

Had never been here before and 4 of us decided to give it a try. We should have had a clue when we walked in on a Saturday night at around 7 and only 3 other tables were occupied upstairs. But, given off the beaten track and Lucas field with no event (which they are near) we thought maybe that was the reason. Crab cake appetizer was good (not great but OK). 2 of us ordered the most expensive thing on the menu the Fillet. Both had to be sent back (one twice) for being way overcooked and the other undercooked (raw). Flavorless meat, just plain lousy. Had to switch one out for ribs. Salmon was good and ribs were also pretty good. Never got a manager who apologized (waiter did), no offering (not that we wanted one but it does usually speak volumes when a restaurant apologizes with their own $$). The Caesar salad was excellent and so was the bread. Would we go back? No. They just did not seem to care that we had a really bad experience and its not worth our effort either to see if they are capable of better.

I had the Bison burger and it was good, it red for a plain blackened grilled chicken and was told that they Do not do special things like that. I go sautéed Spinach instead of Kettle chips and got a Little Spinach. I am sure they have some good food, but not that great of serves at the bar and the lack of items on the menu I shall not be back .

Went here after arriving in town and getting settled in at the hotel. When I got there, it was pretty busy. I think there were a few events going on downtown. Decided to sit at the bar. Ordered the Bison Burger cook medium. Food didnt take long to arrive, even with the crowd. What do you know, it was cooked medium. Everything I had was great, prices were reasonable, and got to watch some sports. Its like an up scale sports bar in the bar area but still has dining room seating. I would go here again.

  • Casey M.

First off.. We showed up 15 min before they closed. Still sat us and let us have full range of menu. Very nice of them. I had the bison burger, asked for medium and got it fairly well done. Not the best way to eat bison but still good. The BBQ sauce was great and the fries were good. Others got salads and said were really good. Good choices of beers. The hotel across the way from the balcony got annoying because everyone wanted to yell things at you so sit inside.

We visited Tavern about a week ago. We did go later than we normally would in respect to their closing time. Who would have thought that a restaurant downtown with Tavern in the name would close at 9:00 in the evening. That being said, the experience here was average at best. Our service was very rushed, the crab cakes only warm, the salads were disappointing and the beef tenderloin looked like it had been stomped on. The sea bass was pretty good, though. Our desserts were delivered before our entrees were finished, not just removed, but finished. The outdoor seating and the sea bass are the only things that earned the second star.

Nope, no, won't be back. I came here once before, and I was not impressed by the quality of the food. Wings should be crispy, not squishy. The most recent visit will definitely be my last. The special, a beef Manhattan, looked delicious from far away, so I ordered it. The first try yielded cold mashed potatoes. I asked our server if she could just pop it in the microwave for a second. Instead, she brought a a whole new one. This bummed me out because (1) there was nothing wrong with the first one except the temperature, and (2) I had to wait five minutes instead of thirty second to get a new one versus reheat. My lunch companion felt bad, but I told her to go ahead and get started, since hers was only lukewarm. The second order was pretty disappointing all around. The beef was incredibly fatty. The server said it was prime rib. Unfortunately, it looked like they made no effort to separate the meat from the fat. It was at least half fat. Yuck. That was irrelevant though, as I had a strange mouth-feel after about six bites of potato. Turns out I ended up with a big chunk of plastic wrap in my food. Yum. Needless to say, the second entree was ALSO sent back, with no third to follow. The server apologized and did not charge me for the entree, but the whole experience left a (forgive the pun) bad taste in my mouth.

I somehow still like this place and will go back again even though I'm 3star-ing here. Love the atmosphere, service and menu selections. However, they are not always on point with their food. I've had the pork tenderloin sandwich twice, one good one bad. House salad was unacceptable with old brown wilted lettuce. Their chili lacked flavor and was uninspiring. I do like that they have a good beer selection, but come on TOS! Do better! You could be so great!

Our group of six went last night for Devour Downtown. Honestly it was better than I expected based on other's reviews. Unfortunately, it did have its quirks.... I thought for a place that is billed as "sophisticated" our waitress was poor. A few times we asked her questions and she was doe-eyed and answered "I have no idea." Also, my boyfriend wanted his duck chili to go. He said it twice. She threw it out. The other issue (which was minor) was our tables had plates of olive oil, but no bread. And usually the bread comes before the main meal, but no bread until the meal came out. Ok... Enough about the non food issues. For the Devour Downtown menu I had the Tuscan salad, roasted pork loin, and creme brûlée. It was all decent and quickly forgettable. This all being said I thoroughly enjoyed myself because I was with amazing people and in the end the night was more about conversation and friendship than the food.

This is a great location if you are going to Lucas Oil Stadium. The food is very good - not your typical chain food. Interior is cute - brick walls, cozy tables. Salads are excellent!

Unassuming location and facade make way to a well-decorated restaurant with a great outdoor patio and its own parking lot. (Although the lot can fill up quickly, so I'd have a backup plan.) Tavern on South is a nice place to try if you're looking to get off the beaten path. I'm a walking kind of gal, and I'd say it's an easy walk from the hotels that are on the west side of downtown (JW Marriott, Marriott, Westin, etc.). The menu looked great and several items were calling my name (tilapia, salmon, steak, chicken) but one reviewer's description of the spicy black bean burger triggered me to order that. It was a perfect size and had a little kick to it - I still added dijon mustard, though, because it wasn't as spicy as I was hoping or expecting. Still flavorful. My bro and his gf ordered the salmon and bison burger, and cleaned their plates. What takes this down from 4 to 3 stars is service, service, service. It started with the hostess when we entered the restaurant: no smile, no welcome, no nothing. She wasn't rude, she just wasn't friendly, and I always feel awkward when the patron is the first one saying hello. It was somewhat of the same story with our waitress; nice, but didn't go beyond what she absolutely had to do to get us our food and drinks - didn't even check to see how our food turned out. And even getting our drinks in the first place took a long time. Now, I'm not a service snob; I just think that when your entree prices for dinner range from 18 - 30, there's a certain expectation of service that goes along with it. I would try Tavern on South again but would hope to be seated in a different section or would hope that there was a little more of a personal touch with the service.

I went here with a bunch of coworkers during a conference. Everything we had for dinner was pretty solid. I got a spinach salad with a beef tenderloin on top. Everyone else really liked their meals too. My only downside was dessert - the apple cobbler was just ok. But otherwise, nice food, relaxed atmosphere, good place to spend time with friends or family.

Came here for lunch and got the salmon sandwich, it was definitely one of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life. They also have a great drink menu, the staff was courteous and attentive, and the atmosphere was great as well. I would definitely recommend checking this place out

Good food selection, not an overwhelming menu just a one pager. Service is very good and nice seating options with a great 2nd floor patio. No real scenic view, but weather is great tonight, so it is good to be outside. I had the Bison Burger which was great. I would highly recommend this as a good casual spot for an adult beverage and better than usual pub food. Cheers!

Pros: Really great menu, bar with nice wine selection, friendly service, great atmosphere and location, easy parking for a downtown location Cons: I was too busy chowing down delicious food to notice any Came here for lunch with coworkers on a weekday. I had never heard of this place, but I am so glad my coworker recommended TOS because I loved it. They have one of the menus where it takes you 15 minutes to decide because there are so many yummy options. This place gets five stars just for featuring unique uses for gouda! I don't see it featured many places, so I was pumped. I settled for the beef tenderloin quesdailla app as my entree. It came with dour cream and "Indiana salsa" which seemed like salsa with white beans. The quesadilla was filled with warm gouda and tender beef. Simpled yet delicious! I have been dreaming about it since! They usually have a lunch special, and the coworkers that ordered it (lamb pita sandwich the day we went) raved about it. Good selection of salsa, sandwiches and pizzas as well. Everyone loved the food, and the portions were perfect for lunch. I left wanting more, but satisfied. Our server Penny was friendly, quick and did a great job accommodating our party. All in all: I'll be back again (and again and again...)

Let me preface this with the fact that my order was carry-out. I ordered the spinach salad with chicken. It does not come with chicken, I added it. According to the menu, it was $3 to add chicken. I was charged $4. Not a huge deal, but slightly annoying. The salad itself was a whole lot of spinach, a few blueberries, blue cheese and a little bit of bacon. It was good, not great...It met the need though. Good salads are hard to find around here. I will say, the way they packaged the salad was impressive. Separated the chicken so it would stay warm. Kudos there!! My friend got the spicy black bean wrap with lentils. It was good and worth getting again. The carry-out service was awesome. They took my order quickly and I was probably out of there in 10 minutes. Can't ask for much better than that. I will definitely go back.

Ok at best. Had ribs which were dry and we're more like riblets. ( fatty and lots of grisle) Sauce on ribs like a sweet spaghetti sauce. Apple compote as a side reminded me of Thanksgiving, not bad but more savory than the ribs. And onion strings? Not sure what they were but no flavor didn't make sense with the dish

Having worked in the industry for 10+ years I should have know better...but don't go to a restaurant within an hour of closing! The hosts expression was priceless "why is this person here right now" ... The server immediately tells you "we close in 30 minutes so if you want dessert or anything you'll need to put it in before then" and the food would never be described as hot. My side of mashed potatoes was also larger than the portion of fish. HOWEVER, minus the luke warm food, everything was good. The place has a nice ambience and nice bar area. I would give it another shot if coming earlier in the day.

Sadly, we weren't impressed, or even satisfied. We heard good things about the food and maybe it is very good, but we will never know because when we got there we were handed a "Gameday Menu". On a Saturday evening? I guess they'd rather herd people through like cattle than satisfy diners when there happens to be a Colts game. My medium bison burger was over cooked and my wife's salad was barely adequate. We couldn't wait to cash out and go somewhere that wanted to treat us like customers. Our server was very pleasant though and she gets two stars, not the food.

We love Tavern on South. The food and service are both excellent. They are also very accommodating of families with small children. On our last outing there with friends (who also have a toddler that is roughly our son's age), we were immediately seated. It is always nice to start your dinner with such a pleasant experience. :) We were there early on a Friday and the hostess seated us immediately without a reservation. The duck wings are very good, although this time when we got them they were a bit cold at the bone. They have to precook them as duck takes a long time to render off the fat. Despite that minor annoyance, they were still very good. Their garlic-buffalo sauce is some of the best I have ever had and they have found a way to attractively plate something as pedestrian as buffalo wings. :) Their beer selection is excellent and they frequently run some sort of drink special. The servers have always been well-informed about the menu and drinks so even if they do not have your favorite, they can at least make an informed suggestion for something you might like. The servers also all seem to have a good sense of humor. It is little things like that which make me happy to revisit an establishment. Of the entrees, their bison burger is excellent and their cooks actually know what "medium" means. It is one of the few places in town where you can order a burger medium and it actually comes out medium. The surroundings and ambiance are what I would call "classic upscale". No pretentiousness. Just a cool place to have dinner and drinks with friends.

I have been here a few times, really like it. The building is quaint and I love the interior. The food is simple and fresh, but does some fun twists on modern classic such as the fillet meat loaf. The burnt tomato salsa that comes on a few of the dishes is absolutely delicious, love it! The Wednesday special where you get 10 bucks off any bottle of wine and 2 bucks off any glass entices everyone to come by on a Wednesday. Just wish their prices were a little lower. With as much as you are paying for some entree's, you would expect to get a little more. Other than that, big fan. Probably one of the best old fashions in town as well. Stop in, you will enjoy it.

Since writing my original review over 2 years ago, I have to say that I have had some amazing meals at Tavern on South. Amongst my favorites have been the smoked Prime Rib and a pasta dish made with a smoked tomato sauce. Just goes to show that you can't judge a place based on one meal. Oh, and I almost forgot about the Duck wings!!! The wings and the sauce they're coated in are absolutely fabulous! They also have a good draft beer and wine selection. I highly recommend TOS, especially for dinner.

First time here for lunch with a group of co-workers for a celebration. The place is really nice and the service was very good especially since we had such a large group. I was surprised how quickly the food came out. I ordered the surf and turf tacos and the flavor was good! The downside was portion size and this was especially the case with the side. I ordered a side of asparagus and I literally got 4 pieces that were thinner than a pencil, for a 14 dollar lunch I think I should have got more veggies.... But overall very good and I would certainly go back.

Our group had a great experience at Tavern on South. The wait staff was excellent. The food was very good. We all had something different and everyone was very happy. We also indulged in some desserts. They were awesome! Tavern on South is a bit off the downtown path, but worth the trip.

Great great sandwiches and soups. Seems to have a sophisticated chef for the size of the restaurant and cost per plate. Bison burger is great. If they ever bring back the BLT you need to give it a shot! This is also a great place for pre-games before colts home games...directly across from the stadium and typically not too overly crowded.

This was my 5th trip to ToS for lunch. I love the location, parking and ambiance, but I just can't praise the food. The "Herb Dusted" fries are flavorless, a crispy version of the old Wendy's fries. The tenderloin sliders were good, but bland. The Bison burger is the best thing on the lunch menu. Don't sit in the booths at the bar, unless you want to be 10"-12" away from the table.

Went to Tavern on South before going to White River Park this weekend, and it was a nice experience, but I was not blown away. We were seated upstairs in a back room, so the ambience felt a bit like someone's re-finished suburban basement--a lot of granite counter tops. They have a great deck that would've been nice on a cooler night. The menu was pricey, so all four of us ordered the bison burger. It was delicious (as were the sweet potato fries), but it would have been nice to have some other reasonably priced meal options. Good deal on Sun King beer ($4 drafts) even on a Saturday evening, which was a great surprise. The location is tough to beat if you're heading to Lucas Oil, White River, or anywhere else in that area.

I used to have a friend who served here and would bring me bits of the menu to try. It was always pleasant enough, so when my boyfriend mentioned heading here for dinner one evening, I was excited to finally sit down for the whole experience. The weather was great, but the live music on the balcony wasn't our taste so we decided to sit inside. The hostess took us to the second floor where there were two large parties. Needless to say, we felt a bit out of place. Our server knew very little about the drinks/menu. When I asked her about a type of wine, she told me she didn't know and then stared blankly, waiting for my response. I went with a Pinot Grigio that tasted like the cheap stuff from Kroger. As for dinner, I chose the pasta dish. I love farfalle and asparagus, so how could I go wrong? It looked wonderful, but tasted like the quick pasta lunches I whip up with leftovers in my own kitchen (and I think mine are usually better, too.) My boyfriend's smoked bison burger was okay. It tasted less like the meat was smoked and more like they just added liquid smoke to the patty. By the end of the meal, we had our credit card ready to pay and get out. I'm not saying I'll never return, but it's definitely not on my to-do list.

In general, the food here is great - especially if you order the typical fare. My only complaint is the healthier options tend to be lacking. I ordered the veggie club and was sorely disappointed. A few mushroom slices, zucchini sliced so thin i could barely tell what it was, and lettuce and tomato... surely not a hearty sandwich. The bread was great and they offer healthy sides, but I definitely would not order the Veggie Club ever again!

I've been to Tavern on South a few times and it never disappoints! Last time I went, I got the Tavern salad and it was absolutely delicious. I don't think I've ever craved a salad before in my entire life, but I crave this one. My boyfriend goes out of his way to come here for the bison burger, and we've also gotten a number of other appetizers and sides that have all been good. The waiters are always accommodating to special requests. I guess I've never been here on a night when something is going on at the stadium, but why is this place always pretty empty when I'm here?! The food is so amazing, and I can't wait to go back. Everyone else should too!

Business lunch today, seated upstairs. Service was decent, food was very good. The bison burger was recommended by the server and it did not disappoint. The surf and turf tacos were recommended as excellent by one of my colleagues. Kind of an out of the way location, but definitely worth checking out.

I really wanted this to be a 4, but it just couldn't happen. My history with ToS: -My uncle was a chef here when it first opened. He helped develop the menu and then left a short time after it opened. The only thing I recognize that's still on the menu from his time is the filet mignon meatloaf, which I've heard is pretty tasty. -I went to ToS ~2 years ago for dinner with my mom and we had a nice time. I had some quesadillas that were pretty tasty, and she had a black bean patty melt. It was the first time I'd ever had a black bean anything, and I fell in love. I've never found another one as tasty as the one at ToS. -We went to ToS tonight, a Friday, with a reservation for 4 at 8:00pm. Unfortunately, what stands out the most about the evening was that the service was pretty terrible. It took foreeevvver for our two appetizers to come out (and it was just "normal" busy, no big game going on or anything like that). We got some fries (excellent) and beef tenderloin quesadillas (super cheesy and pretty delicious). It then took foreeevvver for our food to come out. Our 90 year old grandfather who was with us ordered the prime rib medium rare, and it came out well done. He sent it back and they brought him a new one pretty quickly, but it was definitely closer to rare. His final verdict was that it had good flavor but wasn't very tender. Fiance had the bison burger, which he finished, so it was apparently tasty. His mom had a salad, which she also liked. I had the chicken and waffles because I was feeling adventurous :) , and they were tasty. The BBQ sauce was unique (in a positive, tasty sort of way) and the jalapeño mousse (told you I was feeling adventurous) wasn't too hot or overpowering. I doubt I would get it again, but it definitely wasn't bad. It was just something for me to try. All in all, the food probably warrants a 4 based on my cumulative experiences, but the service is only worth a 2 unfortunately. I'd love to go back and be proven wrong with some excellent service!

Fantastic restaurant! Located right next to Lucas Oil Stadium, this place was in the hustle and bustle of downtown, but was quiet and relaxed. Guests can park free in their lot, which is really nice for the location. The ambiance is great, mixing casual and formal. The service was excellent, with really friendly host and waitstaff. My wife and I bought a Livingsocial deal ($26 for 1 appetizer and 2 entrees). We could get any appetizer and each entree could be up to $20. This allowed us to get a pizza and 2 orders of the salmon, all for 26 bucks (before tip and tax). Great deal, and fantastic food! The pizza was good, but the salmon was excellent!

$10 off a bottle of wine: yes, please. Came here with my parents and really enjoyed it again. My entree was less stellar than last time. It wasn't anything I couldn't make on my own (some pasta, asparagus, mushrooms, tomatoes, and shrimp with olive oil) and didn't have the awesome flavors I had come to expect from ToS entrees. We had the crab cakes again though and they were just as great this time around. While I wasn't totally won over, my mom loved her black bean tacos and couldn't stop raving.

I felt like I was in the sit down version of the Seinfeld episode Soup Nazi. NO TABLE FOR YOU! A definite pass if you have kids - maybe even if you don't. To say the middle aged host could use a little improvement in his people skills would be an egregious understatement. The party before us had no children and were about to be turned away but were able to successfully argue there were two open tables on the patio that were clearly view-able by all. At this, the host pretended not to have seen them before and agreed to seat them. Turning his attention to us, two moms with four well behaved older kids, he looked down his nose and asked if we had a reservation. We did not. There was not a single other person there waiting to be seated by the way. He feigned he was trying to accommodate us and finally offered us a two top at the bar and a 4 top for our kids outside and completely obscured from the bar area. Really? When we politely told him that would not work for us, his response was, "Well then, I don't have anything." Not, "I don't have anything right now. Would you like to wait?" He was straight up rude! We took our business elsewhere and will never again darken their door. Since we visited there based on Yelp recommendations (which are usually awesome) I wanted to offer a different perspective. Families would do much better downtown proper. We ended up at a Bucca di Bepo that night which was yummy but part of a chain. I prefer an independent. We also visited the Santorini Greek Kitchen in the Fountain Square area based on Yelp reviews and it was incredible. A much better choice than Tavern on South in every sense.

Great food, great drinks, great service. Some of our order was not modified to our specifications, but everything we had was quite tasty. Definitely worth a stop, especially considering that most places that cook a good steak in Indy are either ridiculously overpriced or housed in dilapidated barns.

Wonderful service and outstanding atmosphere! Had a late lunch with my Mom the other week and I've been wanting to try this place for a while. The menu was very diverse yet surprisingly affordable! I didn't partake in alcohol consumption during this visit, but I did take note of their impressive tap list..Many local/craft beers! I had the Tenderloin Sliders with grilled asparagus and I was very pleased. I can't wait to try other items on the menu and enjoy a brew!

The food is good however it is a little different. For this reason you need to be into non basic type foods. I came here twice this week one as a guest of a supplier and once to bring my family for them to experience it. They have a very good beer selection and a nice atmosphere. I recommend you stop in an try it yourself.

I have no clue why I haven't reviewed this place yet -- oh yes, the mildly hectic holiday season, and the day I dined at this place I was swept off to Cincinnati to be a very Yelpy Santa at the Yelp Holiday Bizarre. So, that was back in December -- as in the very first week they opened. We were the only folks there, which was both nice & unnerving. When I'm the only table in the place... I feel like there's too much attention on us, too much of a spotlight, and we have to create the energy (I'd much rather walk into a spot that is popping locks and collars and the energy is set; wait, nevermind on that locks and collars part... that's just weird). The beer list is good. Any bar / restaurant that's offering Sun King seasonals is damn good in my book. And they had Sun King's Cowbell Porter on draft. The service. Well, the service was weird. I think I lent a little weirdness to the situation because I had been following the opening and read the menu before hand and I keep up on my local craft beer news, so I sorta trumped the server when she didn't have any answers for my out-of-town tablemates' questions on beer. Then, the server had no idea about any of the details on the food options; as in... *Are the fries thick or thin? *Is the pot pie within a crust or is the puff pastry on top? And... *What cheeses are available on the burger? Hmmmm... these are pretty standard questions if you ask me -- things we gotta know -- espec. in a new place. Weirdly, she would go back to the kitchen and not return with an answer. I'm pretty sure she's never served before. Really, as in never. As in, we might have been her very first table, ever. Alas... I digress... Onto the food. The burger was impressive. I should've ordered it. I ordered the "Filet Mignon Meatloaf." Um, would you be under the impression that for $22 when you order what is called a "filet mignon meat loaf" that it would be in fact filet mignon meat? Well, I was. And, I would've left thinking... "hmmm... I suppose that was filet meat... it was super chewy." But, the manager / owner opted to stop by and see how everything was (thank you) and carried on in telling me that the meat loaf is in fact the meat scraps -- quote, "meat scraps" -- from the filet rounds cut out. Um, "way to be resourceful," was my response, but don't tell me that. It was good though. They have a house chipotle ketchup that was rock solid and meat loaf and fries is one of my favorite meals out there. I'm giving this place 4 stars because they've opened a very classy establishment on South Street surrounded by industry and dives. And, their bar is super nice. And, my next visit was just at the bar, and I loved it. I'll definitely be returning for more local beer in a smoke free environment.

Great atmosphere, loved the feel. The wait staff was very cool, and helped out more than needed. I got the bison burger, which wasn't too bad at all. Smidge dryer than i would have loked, but not too bad. Nice bacon on it, with some good herb season fries. Overall, very pleased with the service and atmosphere.

We went to Tavern on South for Devour Downtown and I had a bit of mixed review about the place. I actually opted out of the Devour menu and just went with an order of the duck wings which were delicious. I was kind of wishing they would have a spicy sauce option but I went with the teriyaki and it packed a lot of flavor. The rest of the table went with the devour menu which started off pretty smooth. All 3 salads were tried and they all enjoyed them. For their entrees, half the group went with the "Land and Sea" and the other half went for the pepper crusted steak. It seemed like everyone enjoyed their entree so that was good. Then came the debacle over dessert. 6 people ordered the creme brulee at the beginning of the meal. When it came time for dessert, the waitress came to tell us that there had been a slight miscalculation and there wasn't any creme brulee left. But she gave 3 other options for what people could choose which were actually in addition to what was on the Devour menu so that was nice. Some people went with angel food cake and some went with a blueberry cobbler. Then the waitress came back again and said that actually they found 5 creme brulees but there was no cobbler. So people changed their order for the 2nd time. 4 people switched back to the creme brulee and the other two picked something else. The creme brulees were brought out shortly after but...there were only THREE of them!!!! Turns out that two of the five that they had found were still frozen and they were defrosting the fourth one that we were still waiting on. Great. I can't blame our waitress because she was actually great but based on my experience and some of the other reviews, this place needs to work on their planning for the week of Devour.

On a cold snowy Sunday when everyone else was probably happy to stay indoors, I ventured out to check out the new Tavern on South and was glad I did! After studying the menu I decided to go with "Tavern Smoked" Shaved Prime Rib, a great sandwich served on a grilled ciabatta bun with grilled onions and horseradish. The Tavern has a feel of warm sophistication to it without being pretentious. Lots of wood and warm colors and a long granite bar. They also have an upstairs area has more seating, bar, private room and a balcony that will be great in the spring and summer. They have a great location next to Lucas Oil Stadium with their own parking lot so don't let that scare you away! Tavern on South also has a great selection of Indiana and other craft beers! Cheers!

Had dinner here yesterday taking advantage of devour downtown . It's a watering hole, not really a place for fine dining. Food is not bad but nothing special either. As for the service, its far from oceanaire, mesh, or capital grille quality, our very young server seem like she wants us out as soon as possible and even forgot to bring our bread basket . Needless to say the place is excellent for drinking before/after a ballgame and if you just want to satisfy your hunger.

Time: dinner. Purpose: use 3 course meal Groupon and satisfy steak craving. Atmosphere: inviting, cool, and comfortable. not crowded. mostly an "older than me" crowd. Service: attentive, polite, quick, but not overbearing. Drink: SK grapefruit jungle. YUM. Food: Bread with oil. Tuscan Salad (awesome on the olives and peppers), death by bleu cheese filet (crusted and cooked awesomely. knocked my socks off when dipped in the bleu cheese puree), Crème brûlée (whatevs...had better). Handryer: Dyson Airblade. Score!

The duck wings were amazing but the hummus was terrible--tasted like whipped mayonnaise. Liked the Tavern salad, but the prime rib wasn't that memorable, the whipped horseradish was mostly butter and the mashed potatoes were nothing to rave about. An overall disappointing experience and I probably won't come back.

Stopped for 30% happy hour apps and a bison burger. Crab cakes are ok, bison burger was good. GREAT quesadillas...highly recommended. The atmosphere was very similar to an upscale sports tavern. Love what they are doing...keep it up...I will be back.

Went to Tavern on South during an Indianapolis Indians rain delay and was pleasantly surprised. From the outside this establishment does not look like more than a hole in the wall dive bar, but once you step inside, you find a very trendy, but classic restaurant/bar setup. I can't comment on main courses, as we just ate appetizers and had a couple beers. We also sat at the bar, so I can't comment on the wait staff. The bartender was very knowledgeable, especially about local craft beers and pairings. We had the chips and salsa, and to our surprise this was amazingly fresh salsa served with chips and pita bread. It was not crowded when we were there so parking, wait staff, and all the other things that have been critiqued in other reviews didn't seem to be a problem. I suppose during busy times, colts games, and conventions this place gets pretty crazy which would make a difference in opinions. My experience was great, however, and would go back again the next time i'm downtown.

Just went last night for Devour summer 2011. Their regular menu has changed a little, with some interesting new dishes, like shrimp bratwurst. Anyway, I got the DD menu, which is really only a deal if you order the most expensive entree, the Chargrilled Filet Mignon, which I did. :) (Most of the entrees on the DD menu are under $20 anyway and a side salad is usually $5 and desserts are $7). Nice char on the tender 5-6 oz filet, layered on top of a bed of just-OK cold potato salad with artichoke. The special tomato-watermelon gazpacho was nice with a little hint of sweet. I do like my gazpacho smooth rather than chunky, which this pretty much was. The peach cobbler dessert was ok, but the peaches were kinda hard... My husband just ordered off the regular menu--the filet meatloaf $19 (also on DD menu) was quite good and would have been my second choice anyway. Tavern salad was pretty standard, especially since someone forgot to add the sweet and spicy pecans. We'll probably go back again--their prices are pretty good and I'd like to sit on the patio sometime (there was a private party/conference last nite). As always, their beer selection was impressive with lots of local stuff. and their NA organic lemonade (no refills) is refreshing

I thought this place was mediocre. The food was pretty good, but nothing to rave about. The inside of the tavern was boring. I noted it was very noisy. The service was acceptable, but the hostess could have done a better job finding us a table--we had a reservation, but were still seated near an obnoxious private party. I do not plan to eat there again. This place is not bad enough for two stars, but does not deserve three.

Refused to honor Google Offer, due to it not yet being in their PoS system. That said, strudle was half tender, half... too al dente? Mignon Meatloaf was flavorless, spare a bit of onion, but the red sauce (house made ketchup?) helped. Brown butter green beans were plain, but agreeable. My companion's pork ribs were quite tender and smokey, and the molasses-based sauce was smokeless (her requirement). Rhubarb slaw was just slaw with a bit of extra root vegetable bittnerness, and the sweet potato waffle fries were just passed undercooked, and very lightly salted, but not unpleasant. Again, the meatloaf sauce added a bit of flavor.

We had a great time. I nicked off a star because I ordered death by blue cheese and it wasn't blue cheesy AT ALL. If it is death by then I want some blue mold. I reviewed the dishes one by one in the pics section.

Update... I have been here several times since then for lunch and each time it has been yummy and fast. They have a great menu and I really enjoy having lunch there. I think generally a lot of restaurants have a disappointing Devour Menu and I am sure that was the case with this place as well.

Somehow Tavern on South showed up under my search for a nearby dive bar, and though it is the farthest thing from a dive, Tavern on South is a great place to grab a drink and eat. Clean, new, and convenient to Lucas Oil. Nice, older building. Walk into a hostess station and the stairs. Turn right into the dining room and bar area, which are separated by a low wall, square supports, and a couple large posters, enough to separate the two ares without making them feel like different places. The eating area has 10-12 lower eating tables and a couple hdtvs. Though a bar, this area is definitely more focused on eating. The bar side (west side) has a 14-16 stools and 6 two-person booths right behind the stools. There's one other area next to the north windows that has a few lower tables as well. The bar itself is light beige granite with no rail. There is a brass foot rail and the stools are padded/fancy. Bar back is light and clean. 3 hdtvs and a two end shelves, but otherwise contains only the taps and a fair amount of bottles. Tons of local and craft/fancy beers, as well as bottles. Basically, not a miller lite place, but plenty of choices. You wonder if the bartenders are old enough (and over 100 lbs) to be working in the place, but most of them are very knowledgeable on food and drink. The food is very good, much is locally sourced, and enough variety to please everyone (best is pizza or the duck wings and meatloaf for dinner, avoid the napa chicken wrap). Bright place with a good atmosphere, drinks and food. Smoke free.

Tavern on South earns four stars for: being local, offering quality craft brews, serving tasty food -- and doing this all "technically" south of South Street -- a seemingly unofficial Mason-Dixon Line of Downtown Indy wonders -- save for a few gems like Shapiro's and Iozzos. The menu selection makes up in quality what it lacks in breadth. I enjoyed the Bison Burger -- which actually had an incredible smoked flavor; I was shocked at how good it was! The atmosphere is nice -- clean, upscale, not too pompous. Perhaps it's just my nitpicking, but something about the place lacks substance and character...in that it feels like one of those faux restaurants or pubs in a hotel. (compared to a place like Old Point Tavern). Considering its proximity to the nearly-complete Convention Center, however, perhaps that's the aim? Logistically, can't beat the location: practically next door to the Convention Center and Lucas Oil and well within walking distance of your favorite downtown hot-spots. Oh -- and they have a private parking lot as well. All in all -- great food and local beer selection = I'll be back. It's not the sort of "where everyone knows your name" type places (yet), but there's considerable promise here. And -- if the ambience had as much flavor as the food, you're looking at a 5-star winner!

I like this place. Their upstairs and downstairs bars are a great post-work gathering spot and I've never had bad food here. While their service leaves something to be desired, you can't go wrong coming here while out and about downtown.

On a friend's suggestion I tried the meatloaf. It was good. Did not expect to enjoy meatloaf with pistachios in it. It came with some green beans, but not many. For the price it was not a lot of food. ($19) Got a caesar salad to start, for the price it was small and the dressing didn't have a lot of flavor. ($8) Beer selection was good and all local. Bartender was good at offering suggestions based on my requests. The bill came with suggested tips on it. I felt it was a bit presumptuous to start the suggested tips at 18% and go up to 25%. The service was good (although waitress kept calling me either sweetie, honey, etc.), but not 25% tip amazing. This place would be 4 stars if the prices were more reasonable. As it is they have good food with small portions.

This place rules. Fresh ingredients, creative yummy dishes and specials and friendly wait staff. I've been there several times and they even brought birthday dessert. Local beer, local ingredients. A true Indy treasure.

Lovely, clean place, bright and airy with a great bar. We had the duck wings-5 star for that item alone-as my brother said the 'bomb'. We had an unusual chicken 'white' pizza with fresh asparagus and Indiana Salsa. Lots of good unsweet iced tea and my brother said a good beer selection.

Came here with my coworkers one day for lunch, and was pleasantly surprised by what I got. First off, the service was terrible. Our waitress was SO slow, and asking her for extra napkins was like pulling teeth. Every time we'd ask for napkins, instead of giving us a stack of regular napkins, she'd come back with a few drink napkins. When my hands are covered with BBQ sauce from the bison burger, I want to be able to wipe them down on something that's bigger than the palm of my hand. Anyway, back to the food. I ordered the Spinach Salad to start, and then the Bison Burger for my entree. The salad was AWESOME. Bacon makes everything better, and the blueberries were the perfect bite of sweet to complement the bits of blue cheese. I'm not much of a salad person, but I would order this again in a heartbeat as my main entree. The Bison Burger, however, was a bit dry and not anything to write home about. I had never had bison before, so I was curious to try this one out, but it wasn't a juicy enough burger for me. I'll definitely be back, even if it's just to pick up the spinach salad to go cuz it was just that good.

The atmosphere was good and the food was outstanding. I had the prime-rib, rare, and my better half had the death by blue cheese, medium, which was the Filet Mignon encrusted with blue cheese and blue cheese mash potatoes. We went on a groupon which was a heck of a deal because it would have been a $90 meal without it. The only thing we ate that wasn't out-of-this-world was the dessert. We got the apple crisp and it was dry and not up to the quality of the main course nor the salads which were also very good! We would go back but only for a special occasion because it's hard to afford on small budgets. We would get a different dessert though to match the rest of the meal. Our waiter was also really nice! He was fun and gave us good service with a smile.

Went to Tavern on South last night for Devour Downtown and I'm glad we did. Good service, nice atmosphere, and tasty food! I really enjoyed the simple, masculine, but classy decor and design of the place. Lots of wood and exposed brick. The menu is interesting and they have a good beer selection. I was hoping for a bit more adventurous beer selection, but it is still better than many places in Indianapolis.

I think that while the restaurant has a good atmosphere, I've definitely had better. Our waitress was friendly enough but the service was fairly poor. We had to remind her a few times to bring drinks or food we ordered and she was missing for most of the 3 hours that it took to get through the meal. They were also missing a main ingredient in one of our meals and didn't offer to substitute or anything, just gave us the meal as it was and said sorry. I think the food overall was subpar, lacking in flavor and quality. They definitely skimp and cheap out on the ingredients in their dishes that matter most to the quality of the dish. The Tavern salad had two small pieces of goat cheese, one tiny limp asparagus, no cucumber at all and really no spiced walnuts. I probably would not return based on my experience. It's too bad because Indianapolis could use some more restaurants that aren't chains.

I wanted something new and different for lunch-so the husband and I met at Tavern on the South. My co-workers had been there a few times before and loved it. When we arrived there was a hostess stand- just no hostess. We waited, looked around, checked out the menu. With my belling growling and my lunch hour dwindling- I was ready to leave and hit up the White Castle. Finally some sees us- maybe an owner? We are then seated at the smallest two person table- at least it was by the window! Having looked at the menu we knew what we wanted and would be ready to order as soon as the waitress would come to our table. But that was another 10 minute wait. Once she did appear at our table there was no "Hello" just a blank stare. She took our drink orders and promptly left. At this point one has only two options- leave and go to the above mentioned White Castle- or smile and just hope that this is an off day. And that is what we did... I could go on and on about the very poor customer service we experienced. (I actually had to go up t0 the bar to get a refill for our drinks.) The food was good- but my plate was taken from me before I could finish. I could have mentioned to the owner that our waitress was horrible and should seek another profession. But in the end I did not. We paid our bill and promptly left. As we were exiting the place a group of professional, well dressed men walk in. They were greeted like they just won an NFL Championship. And then it hit me- we got poor service because of how we looked. I was in jeans, boots and an average (but cute) top. My husband was in his work uniform. Maybe I am thinking too much into this, but I really feel like that was the case- we did not look like a couple that could afford to spend $30 on a lunch. After this experience I will never go to Tavern on South, there are too many other locally owned establishments in this city!

I wish this place had some sort of character. Good food, but boring interior. Not a sports bar, but not a foodie restaurant. Had a Groupon and everything was fine, but nothIng was awesome enough to bring me back.

I went with a friend with a Google offer. The location is great and looks like a 'nicer bar' on the inside. The food tasted good although it was just too fancy along with over priced (for what you get). We ordered an appetizer along with desert. I ordered the duck and my friend ordered the salmon, I believe both were around $20-25 each. The presentation of the food was amazing something you would see on MasterChef and it tasted pretty good as well but we both left just as hungry as we were when we arrived. When I go out I look for value not how great it looks on a plate... that's just me. If I were to go back it would only be for a drink before the game due to the prices for what you get.

I heard good things about Tavern on South and I was not disappointed. We ate inside b/c the humidity was a bit much for me, but the patio was packed even until 10 pm. Our server was great, super friendly, helpful with suggestions, and seemed genuine. They have a good selection of local and regional craft beers on draft, we chose Flat 12 Half Cycle IPA (yummy!). Started off with the shagbark hickory teriyaki duck wings. They were cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. There are 3 sauce choices, but I think we made the right decision. The sauce was sweet and savory, the boyfriend threatened to lick the plate. We went with the roasted tenderloin of beef and seared tuna duo and the tavern salad. The tenderloin was medium rare and it was done wonderfully. It was served with grilled artichokes and a plum sauce, really great. The tavern salad had candied walnuts, goat cheese, and dried cranberries, Delicious. For dessert we dove right in before I remembered to take a photo. Chocolate sponge cake filled with molten peanut butter, peanut butter ice cream and chocolate sauce drizzle. I was mad I had to share, let's put it that way. Next time I'm going patio and only eating dessert.

I went here because of a suggestion of a friend. I was quite surprised at what a nice restaurant it was. Really enjoyed the cheeseburger & the fondue dip appy is a must try. The ambiance is relaxed and comfortable and yet it is very pretty. I would love to come back and try lunch since I work downtown.

My husband and I decided to stop in for lunch after driving by this place for months. I had high hopes for this place but was disappointed. The food was really good but what ruined it for me was the service. Our server was girl who acted like she was above us and hardly said two words to us the entire time. It took forever for our food to come out. Once the server brought it to our table we didn't see her for the rest of the time. We finally had to find someone so we could get our check. Needless to say she wasn't tipped well since she didn't do anything. As we were walking out to our car we finally figured out where she and all the other servers had disappeared to, they were out back smoking and talking about the customers. Save your money and don't bother coming here!!!

This place is alright! It's got a warm decor with vintage, and I do mean vintage as in 1911 Indy Car photos on the wall as well as other Hoosier sports. Our waitress was on top of it our whole meal and quick to offer up suggestions and a good conversation about local craft brew which is the fastest way to my heart. The black and blue pizza was crisp, vibrant and flavorful. My friend and I both enjoyed it. The smoked bison burger was tasty we both agreed it needed some cheese to stand up to the smokiness of the bison. The place is ran by a familiar and friendly face, Martin G. Formerly of Chumleys and OPTs. Two of my favorite Broad Ripple haunts. I'm looking forward to spending many a meals on their patio this coming summer. Additionally I dig that they are serving a lot of local brew and sourcing a large portion of their menu locally! Cheers!

I went there on a Thursday for a late lunch/early dinner. I saw Tavern on South on the Devour Downtown list and decided to give this place a try. I didn't know whether to seat myself or wait for the maître d'. There was no one up front nor a sign like most places telling you to "Please seat yourself". I decided to seat myself and walked up to the bar area and sat at one of the tables. It appeared that most, if not all, of the employees were either busy preparing the silverware rolls or chatting it up at the bar. After 5 minutes it seemed that my waitress was at a stopping point in her story to be able to come out from the bar and take my order. Apparently, I was suppose to guess at what they offered since she then asked if I needed a menu when she came to my table. She came back with the menu and didn't even offer me their Devour Downtown menu. I ordered the Filet loaf with green beans and a side house salad. I was impressed by the house salad with the candied walnuts, goat cheese and dressing. I only wish the Filet loaf was as good as the salad I had. I was greatly disappointed. The green beans had no flavor and were really tough. I had to use a knife in order to cut through them as the side of the fork wasn't cutting it. The loaf was really dry and had no flavor once I used up the sauce the was dribbled onto one side of the Filet loaf. I politely asked for more sauce once I was able to get the attention of one of the workers there as my waitress was off on a long smoke break. I did not feel comforable finishing my meal once one of the guys brought me the extra sauce due to the fact that three other guys followed him from the kitchen almost to see if I would eat the remaining loaf with the sauce that was brought to me. It just felt that something was done to it. When you have three other guys with big smirks on their face glancing towards me and no other guests are around my area, it just seems a little too suspicious to think otherwise. No way will I ever go back, nor will I ever recommend this place to anyone!!!!!! This place is a joke. It was a bad experience and nothing about it stood out. Paying around $32 for a side salad, meatloaf and a beer on draft is not worth it. Save yourself some time and money and go elsewhere. I bet the Speedway Gas Station down the road has better food and better service too.

Great service but the food was just okay. Nothing special but better than pub grub. I guess I shouldn't expect more from a place that calls itself a tavern.

We've been going to Tavern on South for their really cool bar atmosphere and the wonderful craft & import beers on tap. And, on the recommendation of a friend, we've also lapped-up bowls of their mushroom cappucino soup made with Starbucks coffee liqueur. We decided to take advantage of the Devour Downtown deal and have dinner on a Wednesday. Wednesday's at TOS offer $3.50 pints of beer which is a deal that can hardly be beat anywhere. Upon arrival we were greeted by a very friendly gentleman at the door and seated at a table of our choice. The waiter was really nice and down-to-earth and offered suggestions when we asked. The arrival of our food was perfectly timed from the beginning to the end. Our meals were absolutely wonderful. The husband had the Tavern Salad with candied asparagus, goat cheese and other yummies tossed in an apple vinaigrette. I chose the Caesar which had a housemade roasted garlic dressing. Both salads were great but I would definitely order the Tavern Salad again. I chose the Broiled Sea Bass with bloody mary corn & crab stew as my entree. The bass was served on a bed of really wonderful jasmine rice and then was completely surrounded by a river of the stew. I had hoped the stew would be a little more flavorful/spicy but it was really good. The sea bass however was really incredible. The layers of fish just literally fell apart like pats of butter and it was so creamy and delicious. The hubby had the Blue Cheese Crusted Filet Mignon with grilled mushrooms. And smoked tomato jus. I said, SMOKED TOMATO JUS. I have not quit thinking about the wonderful flavor of this delectable sauce since that day. I questioned the waiter and was told that they "smoke the tomatoes in their smoker out back." The filet was totally encrusted in a blue cheese, well, crust. NOT topped with a dab of blue cheese crumbles or a blue cheese dressing like some places do. The filet, my husband states and I concur, was the best steak he's ever had. And, it was cooked perfectly per request. They had 2 dessert offerings which we ordered one of each. Creme Brulee and an Apple Strudel with homemade caramel sauce. Both desserts were excellent and a fine finish to a fine meal. We ate around 6:30 on a Wednesday and the service was great so I honestly can't say what it's like on the weekend during prime dinner hour. But, if there's a wait, I would recommend sticking around - I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I had lunch here with a few co-workers. I rather enjoyed it. Good food, decent service. I'd go here again. The specials were interesting, and there were a few other things on the menu I wanted to try, especially the tenderloin.

The service was poor. We showed up an hour before closing time (9pm) and were asked if we wanted to eat. Our waitress was disinterested and neglected our table although the place was far from busy. The food was tasty, though.

This is going to be a rather short review. At the risk of sounding mean spirited I think the menu was put together with too much of an eye towards Top Chef chic.I ordered crab in grilled cabbage, well it reads better than it eats. The cabbage was "wilted" and chewy;the crab salad needed some spice to match up to the salsa(which was quite good, just didn't fit);some acidity and some texture. If the sauce was supposed to bring the acid it dropped it along the way;all it brought was pretty.I'll be back to try something else I can't try a new "joint" just once.

Tucked away behind Lucas Oil Stadium is Tavern on South, an inviting restaurant with an upscale, innovative menu and a gorgeous bar. Chef Allen Schideler, formerly of Broad Ripple Steakhouse, displays his talent for combining flavors and a flair for artistic plating. Tavern on South has only been open for about a month, and I visited during the very hectic Devour Downtown. I always expect a new restaurant to take some time to settle in, and while Tavern does have some room for improvement, the depth of experience of Owner Steve Geisler shows. Service was running smoothly and there were more hits than misses on the menu. The filet mignon meatloaf caught my eye on the menu instantly. I was completely intrigued by the idea of using one of the finest cuts of beef in a meatloaf. It was even better than I imagined. The flavor of the filet really stood out among the chunks of fresh vegetables and the slightly smoky, sweet tomato sauce. This is truly a wonderful dish and I can't wait to have it again. Other hits include the Tavern Salad with its granny smith apple vinaigrette and the broiled sea bass with a bloody mary corn and crab sauce. Next time I will try the Indiana "Shagged" Ahi appetizer. The big miss of the evening was dessert. Something went terribly wrong here. Its just incongruous to have such well-prepared entrees and a completely sub par last course. The apple strudel was a tough, over-worked pastry with a mushy apple filling that was almost completely lacking in flavor. The crème brulee, while flavored appropriately, was runny. The crème in crème brulee is actually a custard that is prepared the day before and sets up in a refrigerator overnight. This was not a proper custard. It's possible that it did not contain enough egg yolk. However, I think it is more likely that they ran out of the dish and made the decision to make more and serve it without the proper setting time. For now, I'm going to blame the disastrous desserts on the restaurant's newness and the demands of Devour Downtown. I look forward to going back to Tavern on South, ordering dessert, and eating it too. Overall, I give Tavern on South a rating of 4. I think this restaurant has the potential to become a 5, and I look forward to reviewing it again later this year.

driving thru town and hotel recommended the place ( should have been the first warning sign..i think staff are paid off by local restaurants..) very average for the price..i had a $25 chilAen ( mispelt on the menu .also couldnt cook it..) clearly frozen fish laden with a overly salted soy sauce "reduction"..husband had chicken with was also not fresh and suprise ...same sauce ..mine was also cold ..we had out 2 yr old with us and she got pasta with a cheese sauce that was so heavy (formed a crust like skin in 10 seconds ...) just over priced and average ..although it did have a nice outdoor seating area. i should add i was coming from new york so i guess we get spoilt by excellent food over there

Visited on a Saturday night, and the place was almost empty. We were seated upstairs, and there's something, um, "insitutional" about the place. The carpeting and furniture look like it was from an old hotel. Or maybe a newer hotel (it's certainly not worn), but definitely a hotel. I had the bison burger, because that is what I was supposed to have. It was OK. In fact, everything was OK. And it's really not that exciting to eat OK food in a mostly deserted restaurant. Either the food or the atmosphere needs to be more exciting for me to return. The private lot was a plus.
