There are many reasons why St Yared made it into the Yelp Top 50 Restaurant list. For us it was more then just a great dining experience (many thanks to the owner) it also became an opportunity to learn more about Ethiopian culture. We came for my birthday and the owner immediately greeted us and welcomed us like we were family. He took the time to explain how important food and the ceremony of eating is celebrated in Ethiopia. A true lovely spirited soul this man has. We really valued the stories and history he shared with us about Ethiopia throughout our meal. In regards to the food, all of the dishes you eat are prepared by his wife who uses only authentic Ethiopian spices and recipes that have been passed down by their family for generations. This is the real deal! Be sure to order the coffee! It's strong and bold. It makes a statement on your tongue. All the beans are from Ethiopia and locally roasted. Skip Starbucks and stop here for coffee on your way into work. There is a coffee bar set up so you can order a cup to-go or you can buy beans by the pound. For our meal we started with Ambasha which is bread served with cheese and honey. It is prepared to be broken and symbolic of the last supper. A bit sweet in a good way, delicious, great to take home and eat for breakfast the next day if you can't finish it with your meal. We rolled up our sleeves and ordered the meat combination for two. We were able to pick the two veggie sides that came with meal. I really liked the Ye-Misir Wot - spicy red lentils with garlic, ginger, and onion. I loved the flavors in this dish - spicy flavorful and perfect for scooping. I also enjoyed the Ye-beg Wot, it too was spicy and had similar seasonings as the lentils. The other items were just ok for me but overall I appreciated trying a variety of items in the combination platter and when I return I know which items I will order at my next visit. For my birthday the owner ended our meal with complimentary homemade Ethiopian honey wine. What a treat! It was sweet like mead, very delicious. I would order this again for sure. Notes: They now serve breakfast which includes Ethiopian, Caribbean, and American dishes! Check out the daily specials on their website for half price deals, complimentary honey wine, and $2.00 off select dishes.

Total treat! Coffee equaled the best we tasted in Bali. Wait staff was wonderful. Meat combo platter made me wish we had "come to this country" years ago !!!

My first time here and I love it! When you order a cup of coffee they give you a warm cup and saucer so the coffee will stay warm (you serve yourself). The owner stopped by the table and introduced himself and was so friendly and gracious. Super friendly staff who called almost every person by name. This is worth the drive to Geist.

Amazing authentic Ethiopian food in a beautiful dining setting with personalized service! This isn't just good food, it's a culinary experience and tradition of sharing. The owner Haile is the real deal. While the injera bread takes a little practice, it does not require someone to be overly adventurous to try it. Try the meat combo for the best variety. This also a great place to get a great cup a coffee. Ethiopian coffee is the bomb!

Until I ate at St Yared I thought I didn't like Ethiopian food - even though I've been to some other, highly recommended Ethiopian restaurants. The food is so fresh and wonderful, and it's served in a very warm, well-lit and pleasant atmosphere. I was with a large group and they have a very comfortable group room. I shared the vegetarian sampler. It was a spectacular meal and I'm now thinking about how soon I can go back for another.

I took my lovely girlfriend here yesterday for dinner for her birthday. The food was not the best tasting Ethiopian food I've had but I must say that the ambience was the best I've seen so far and the customer service was very good. Everything was reasonably priced and I would definitely go there again but it's not at the top of my list of Ethiopian restaurants. My favorite is still Abyssinia Ethiopian restaurant!

Amazing! Hidden gem that all should try. The owner made the experience even better. Can't wait to go back!

If you're tired of the same chain restaurants go here. If you love good food, genuine people and good conversation go here. I am new to Ethiopian food, I thought it would be similar to Moroccan but its not like anything I've had before. Just come prepared to get your hands dirty. But as great as the food was, my favorite part was speaking to the owner. He is just a positive guy who loves food, loves people and his culture. I am a future regular!

Excellent experience. Food has depth of flavor - hard to find. Owner visits your table to help you enjoy the history of his food. We were served by his teenage son. As parents of teens, we enjoyed his enthusiasm. We bought some coffee to bring home as it smelled amazing and was roasted locally. Best flavors were the lentils veggie dish, shrimp, and collard greens. Tiramisu was tasty too. Highly recommended.

I've only had Ethiopian cuisine a couple times before, but I would highly recommend checking out St. Yared. The owner, Haile, was quite welcoming and shared his unique cultural background with us. I would recommend everything we had: the steak and pepper soup they were experimenting with; the ambasha with honey and cheese; the meat combination + shiro and yatkilt wot; the chocolate cake; and the Ethiopian coffee. (The doro wot is quite spicy, so be warned!) The service was exceptional and we'll definitely be sharing the experience with friends in the future.

Ate here for the first time and enjoyed ourselves so much. Family owned and operated, and the gentleman owner could not have been a better host. Awesome experience. Thank you form the bottom of our hearts. It was a night we will not soon forget, and the food was joyous. Love eating with our hands, but be warned, the portions are huge. Also recommend the awesome hot spiced tea.

Went for birthday dinner tonight. Chip and I have had this cuisine in Berkeley, San Francisco and twice in Indy. THIS place is the best we've ever had!

Best part of a long soccer weekend! Delicious food with fantastic service (and interesting discussions with the owner). Looking forward to going back - and worth a trip on its own!

As always, exceptional. Run by a family from the area, the food here is unique and always fantastic. There is no silverware here, so be ready for some adventure! For first timers, try the Meat Combination, which has samples of five of their best dishes on a very large platter! Ask for extra bread if you have two or more at your table.

Great restaurant in Geist area. The food was very good, the service was great, and the owner is very passionate and involved with the restaurant. Great menu with lots of options and the ability to try multiple items with a combination platter. Having a locally owned Ethiopian restaurant in the neighborhood is wonderful.

The owner told is he would deliver a meal that would make us never want to eat Ethiopian in Chicago again. He did not disappoint! The food is amazing and Haile (sp?), the owner, spoke to all of the customers as they dined about traditions in Ethiopia. He was so personable and even took our picture for us. We had the meat combination with lentils and potato and carrots. We will definitely be back!

  • Carolyn H.

Went tonight with my family. The food was unique and delicious (especially the red lentils and beets!). The best part though was the family-owned atmosphere. I got to chat at length with a son and the dad about Ethiopian culture! The dad even took me on a personal tour to explain all about the pictures they have hanging! I loved it!

Our first experience with Ethiopian food. We tried the meat combination platter which comes with chicken, beef, lamb, and two vegetables. The taste was excellent for all the items. The spices are unique compared to normal Midwest cuisine, but not over powering. The restaurant is family owned, warm, and friendly. We will definitely be back.

This was our first visit here. The service was great. She was knowledgeable and very service oriented without being overbearing. The combo meat dish with two vegetables was very fun to eat and filling for us both. They have a decent beer and wine selection. We will be back!

Our Restaurant Club went to St.Yared's last night and I loved it. The food was great and so was the ambiance. The food took a little longer to come out, but they claim to make everything from scratch, and it certainly tasted like it :-) The owner also visited our table a couple times and was very kind and friendly. I would definitely recommend and will be eating there again :-)

This was our first time visiting, so I'm sure we had the royal treatment, but I couldn't help but feel that all diners were treated this way. We were waited on by the owners son and the owner made us feel like family. The wine list is not extensive, but seems more than adequate. Our selection was both a good choice for the food and a good wine. We had the ambasha first (and did feed each other as requested). Having never had Ethiopian cuisine we went with the meat combination platter. We also refused the offered silverware, preferring to eat with our hands in the custom of Ethiopia. There were some spicier selections, but nothing that was as hot as some Indian or Mexican foods. All of the selections were very good and the two of us had trouble finishing one combination. We were thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff. Don't delay going as long as we did!

The Injera is nice and a main bread served with appetizers. I recommend the appetizer with home made cottage cheese. We shared a meat combo dinner with some vegetarian sides. All nice and tasty. Haile the owner gave us s sample of his wife's home made honey wine. This place is peaceful and enchanting. Major great experience.. nice Egyptian wedding cake. Fulll bar!!!

Just opened this weekend. Service was slow as they were packed, but it was friendly. The food is excellent, easily on par with the other places in town but finally a place on the northeast side. Highly recommend!!

What happens when you take a topflight server, a gracious owner and fantastic food and add them all together? An experience worth repeating time and time again. Already years-long lovers of Ethiopian food, we have discovered this gem hidden away on Fallcreek Road near Geist Reservoir, Generous quantities of incredibly delicious food (plus a promise of beer imported from East Africa in the near future) will keep us coming back in the days to come. Definitely a most welcome addition to the Indy restaurant scene.

What an incredible experience! Having grown up in East Africa, this was more than a mere taste of home. The wat was authentic, spicy, and delicious. The njira was tasty and I can't wait until they get Tusker beer in from my homeland, Kenya. Beyond the amazing flavors, the owner, Haile, was warm and friendly and the service was very excited about the chance to share Ethiopian cuisine. Whether Ethiopian is comfort food (like me) or an exotic foray on the wild side, this is definitely the place to go!! He went to Yared's. :) You should too.

An excellent experience was had at St Yared. The food is truly unique and quite superb. No knives and forks here,The spicy lamb choice was top notch. Truly wish this family run restaurant great success....Looking forward to just having coffee there during the day time, ideal for meeting up with clients or fiends.

This a new place for us. Crazy good. Definitely different. Ethiopian food. Met the owner, he was the most gracious host I think we have ever met. His wife does all the cooking. The closest thing I can compare the food to is Indian. But it's not. It is it's own thing. Very reasonable prices, a GREAT wine list for a small place that is more than fairly priced. How many places have a Steele Vignonier and a La Crema Pinot Gris for $30????? That alone is worth 3 stars before the food comes out. Now, the food. You share off a platter with a type of bread. They give you silver wear if you don't want to eat with your fingers. First time, so we have the meat combo and veggie combo. 10 items!!! It's all very interesting and tasty. They do a great job describing it all. Come try it. It's unique and locally owned by a family, that's pretty. A great date night place as it is Ethiopian custom to feed each other as a show of love. They also have fresh brewed coffee. Did you know coffee was invented in Ethiopia??? Me neither!!!!

It pains me to only give four stars to a place I have been looking forward to for sooooo long. Maybe it was just the timing or the day or the anticipation...(or skip to the second to last paragraph) I recently stopped for lunch during the week...there were only two other people eating in there so...pretty quiet. Haben (who I believe was NOT the owner others have referenced in their reviews) was gracious in helping me decide what I wanted to get and walking thru some of the options. I settled on a vegetarian Defen-Misir Wot (spicy red lentils) and a cup of Harrar coffee. The flavor of the lentils was very good and the accompanying injera bread had a very unique flavor. The side of lettuce and tomatoes with dressing was fresh as well. Here is the thing...this isn't something I enjoyed eating alone (at all). Outside of the fact that it takes practice to use the injera bread and scoop/pinch/dip lentils, this is food that should be shared. It WAS very good (thought I tasted cloves in the lentils) but coming here on a date, double date, or with good friends/family would be way more fun. Even with co-workers, I wouldn't come here. So until I get back here with someone who would enjoy these flavors with me I will be stuck on four stars.

Delicious food and very lovely restaurant. The #14 veggie dish of red spiced lentils was delicious. The meat combo for two is great for two or three people. The big slice of bread that comes with honey and cheese is lovely and enough for 3 people as well. I docked a star because it took one hour to get our food. We came at noon on Saturday so I'm not sure why it took so long. There were only three other tables. But the bread and amazing coffee helped with our hunger pains until the main course arrived. Plenty of parking, and the restaurant has ample seating. The pastries by the coffee station look yummy. I found the food to be similar to indian: great flavors and excellent use of spices.

Wonderful time at this restaurant. Had a wonderful history lesson by the owner. Had the meat combo and seafood dish that was very yummy. Had the Ambasha appetizer and homemade honey wine. Was a wonderful and different experience. Will be back again.

Such a great hidden gem in the Geist area! The food is just as good as at Abyssinia on 38th St. but without the long drive to get there. We get the vegetarian combination - my faves are the kik alicha (split yellow peas made with onions, garlic, and ginger) and ye-dinish ena carrot alicha -- potatoes and carrots in this seriously amazing sauce. The injara that's served with the food is also very good. The staff is very friendly and the owner always comes around to say hello and check on you, which I like.

NO STARS!!!...lunch took over two hours. We were the only one's in the restaurant and it still took almost an hour for them to wait on us. Then another hour before we were served. Nasty food also and expensive for what you get.

This little eatery really gives off the Ethiopian vibe inside with colorful artifacts and walls of historical photographs. It's definitely an out-of the country experience. Sauce-drenched, crusty-fingered, under the nails - not for the germophobes! (Although, they do have silverware - I say, dig in like a toddler to get the full effect.) I'm pretty new to this type of cuisine, but the owner was very helpful in explaining the significance behind the meals such as the "ambasha" breaking of the bread ceremony and even intimate aspects of sharing meals with your significant other by feeding them. Great historical tid-bits. I can tell he is very grateful and willing to share his culture. As a starter, we got ambasha which comes with homemade cheese and side of honey. It's decent, but a little filling before the main course. We got a meat combo plate and Ye-beg wot "lamb in spicy berbere sauce" to share. As sides we got: red lentils, shiro, gomen, string beans, and potatoes & carrots. Injera (like sourdough crepe) lined the perimeter of the platter - quite healthy & great for gluten-free guests. The injera is quite sour in my opinion, but I haven't tried other places so I can't really give an accurate comparision. My boyfriend thinks it mellows out the flavor of the actual dishes. The star winner for me was the ye-beg wot - it was flavorful and spicy. Delicious! Everything else was just okay - a little less seasoned than I would like, but perhaps it's supposed to be that way. Overall, unique and adventurous experience. We'll revisit again in the near future!

Finally a truly ethnic restaurant in Geist and Ethiopian at that. This little gem is located off of Fall Creek road in a strip mall either before or after the Marina depending on which way you come. The vibrant and modern decor provides a very warm and inviting atmosphere, along with the friendly service that is provided. Given the space, the tables are setup in a manner that there is enough space between other tables as to not feel claustrophobic. Most of the tables are out in the open space, but there are three alcoves with tables in them that would provide a more and intimate setting. There is a full bar that is sectioned off from the main restaurant with seats at the bar and what appears to be a room with a larger table for groups. There is also a coffee and tea service counter that sells Ethiopian tea and coffee. For tea lovers, I recommend the Ethiopian tea. The tea is a stronger tea, made of cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg, unsweetened. The smell is amazing, as is the kick at the end of your sip. If you are not a fan of cinnamon, I wouldn't recommend it. Like most restaurants, St Yared Ethiopian Restaurant doesn't have a gluten free menu, but for those of you unfamiliar with this cuisine, many of the traditional Ethiopian dishes are made without wheat, including the Injera. Typically injera is made out of Teff grain, but sadly, due to the altitude, the injera is made with a bit of wheat flour. Having a hard time deciding what to order, I opted for the mixed meat plate that included two vegetarian sides. The meat plate consists of Doro Wot (chicken drumsticks-spicy), Ye-Siga Tibs (beef-mild), Ye-Beg (lamb-spicy). For my sides, I opted for Tikle Gomen (Cabbage and Carrots) and Ye-Dinish Ena Carrot Alicha (Potatoes and Carrots). The food was amazing and extremely filling even though I wasn't able to eat the dishes with injera. I was provide a plate of lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers with dressing instead. Although I had to use utensils, you would traditionally eat with the injera and your hands, my meal was overall an excellent experience, such that I will be returning shortly. I highly recommend St Yared for those looking for a new cuisine to try, vegetarians and vegans, those with gluten allergies, etc. They are open for lunch as well.

If you find yourself here, get the ambasha and the meat combo. You will not be disappointed! Never had ethiopian and this place hands down is my favorite. Being filipino I'm comfortable eating with my hands. Out waitress was more then helpful and friendly (she basically ordered for us!). The boyfriend and I already have plans to go back. Food is great, service is great. Can't wait to try the coffee

I LOVE this place. Family owned, clean, attentive, and worth every penny. Seriously, I cannot say enough about the wonderful atmosphere and food. The Ambrosia was delicious! It was soft and warm severed with honey and cheese. Hopefully, we will have time to go again before we leave to go back home.

If I could describe St Yared in one word, it would simply be... special. It's extremely rare to find a totally family-run business in this age, especially one that is conducted so well. Upon entering the restaurant, the owner greeted me personally and took time to tell me about the business, his family, and the Ethiopian culture. A few other families were scattered around, all laughing and thanking the owner as he checked on each table. I've had Ethiopian cuisine in many different cities, but St Yared is not "restaurant food"-- it truly tastes homemade, like an amazing dish that your grandmother makes but no one else in the family can seem to recreate. My boyfriend and I split the vegetarian combo for 2 (good for vegans), and it was clear the ingredients were very fresh. I can't remember the last time I had a meal that fresh in a restaurant. St Yared truly offers a unique cultural experience and is a must-have in the Indy suburbs. It's clear that the family is not about profit or pumping out mass produced food, but mindfully sharing their beautiful culture with others through carefully crafted meals. I can't wait to come back and share this with other people in my life!

Just had dinner here and I must say it was a wonderful experience. Food was prepared fresh and had plenty of flavor. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. We will definitely mark this as one of our favorite places to dine.

It was my first Ethiopian food experience and I talked my husband who is a very picker eater in to joining me! We both loved the food and they had a traditional American kids menu (chicken, pizza, Mac n chz). It was served authentically (no utensils) which made for a unique dining experience. My husband is already asking to go back! The food gets 5 stars!!

I'm a sucker for anything new, especially when it comes to ethnic cuisine. As a corn-fed Midwestern white boy trying to gain some cultural exposure, I absolutely loved this place. The whole idea of Ethiopian cuisine seemed comically ironic, but I had to try it. First of all, being greeted at the front door on a Saturday night by the owner was something I certainly didn't expect, but it's a hell of a personal touch. More on this aspect later. The place was not busy on a Saturday evening, which is unfortunate. After conversations with our server and the owner, we decided on a meat sampler and a vegetarian sampler. What we got was a monster-truck-hubcap-sized platter of all kinds of interesting colors and flavors that cannot possibly be explained in this format. Suffice it to say that this was a perfect strategy for a first visit. Luckily, we had lots of help from the staff. Enter the owner. If you are an introverted diner, stay away. It's truly a cultural learning opportunity, and you will be guided through the whole thing. You will learn the customs and cultural significance of what you are eating. We were met several times table-side to get opinions, field questions, and to get the deeper story on the customs and flavors we were experiencing. I found it a bit odd at first, but the parenthetical info really enhanced what could have been a fairly intimidating meal. Bottom line: challenge yourself! Dine here and learn something while you do.

Excellent breakfast menu- Ethiopian, Jamaican, American choices. Food has a mild kick but not too spicy, though if you like spice I'm sure they can make it to your liking. The Ethiopian omelet is my favorite menu item and the bread is to die for. Dinner food was delicious as well; the only reason this restaurant doesn't get 5 stars is the 1st time I went there for dinner, the food wan't hot, closer to room temp. The staff is great, the owner is very kind and friendly. The coffee is superb. If it's not meal time, at least stop in for a cup of coffee or a latte. You won't be disappointed.

Breakfast! Please don't overlook St. Yareds for a quick tasty breakfast. After my Saturday morning walk, it was a pleasure to discover they had many good breakfast options along with their delicious coffee, tea, chai . Ethiopian omelettes, Greek yogurt, pastries, to name a few, were also available. You can bet I'll be back.
