I am wavering between a 3 and a 4 here, but I think the 3 prevailed. I like the interior of the restaurant. Diner style always makes me feel like a little kid! Also, good selection of beers on tap. I ordered the pulled pork plate and oh my goodness there was SO MUCH FOOD! You get the pulled pork (which there's an insane amount of) plus two sides and three fried biscuits with apple butter. Woohoo! I opted for the curly fries and the vegetable of the day. The vegetable of the day tasted like frozen vegetables that someone boiled in water. Um.... yeah, I can do that at home. I was expecting something fresh and flavorful. Not okay. The curly fries were delicious though, as were the fried biscuits and the apple butter. The pulled pork was good, and they put the sauce on the side which I liked, but there just wasn't enough sauce to completely cover the pulled pork. All in all, I thought the food was fair. Some were better than others, but nothing about it was making me itching to go back. Also, our waitress had the enthusiasm of a slug. I understand that there are off days and such, but would a little smile hurt anyone? All in all, I think I would go back one more time, just to see if I had a better experience with the food and waitress. I do like the interior and think it has potential. Unfortunately though, there are way better food options in Fountain Square, so Shelby Street Diner is going to have to step it up a bit, I think.

So my first experience dining in this establishment has left me a little obsessed with the place. Not only is the food exactly what I've come to expect and crave from little diners like this one, but the atmosphere is just perfection. No sooner had we sat down and started to peruse the menu, did a lovely older couple sitting behind us strike up a conversation. Before you know it, everyone seated in the back dining room is involved in a group conversation. Our server was on her game, friendly, and our order got to us hot and fast. I had the hubcap tenderloin. Not the best I've ever had in my life, but I would definitely have it again. It took me all day to eat the dang thing! I'll be back, over and over again. Some of the regulars there said the Ribeye is where it's at. So I think I'll do dinner there on Friday, and get me that steak. Eat here. You're welcome.

Their 5 oz. rib eye is tender, juicy and flavorful and cooked to order! The staff are friendly and give you a warm greeting and send off as you come and go. Salads are fresh and crispy and the portions are just right. A wonderful value for a small dollar amount.

This is a 50's style diner. If you are looking for great onion rings and burgers with friendly service, this is it!

This place has the typical look of your old-fashioned diners, but I think it's actually been around a long time. Lots of BIG options - see the pictures here. I opted for the smaller tenderloin, fries and shake. Exactly what I wanted. Perfect. We showed up around 12:30, which is past the normal lunch hour, so we easily found a place to sit. Service was decent, but I wouldn't say it was necessarily fast, but I think more care is applied to preparing the food, so it's to be expected. I think the prices are fair, and the food is pretty good. Nothing new here, though. Just straightforward diner-style food.

The outside didn't look as flamboyant or glamorous like many good restaurants but good god the food is amazing. The steak literally melted in my mouth. Not to mention the service was great, and reasonable pricing. Will definately be back. Highly recommended.

Great greasy spoon. This place is on the lunch rotation and for good reason. Large portions of tasty unhealthy food. The staples for our group are the big burger deluxe, big BLT and the big tenderloin. Always walk out of here satisfied if not a little bit overstuffed. Service here is always friendly and quick.

This place had a lot of things going for it: great location, great space, cool servers. Unfortunately, something had gone terribly wrong in the kitchen during my only visit. The server let me and my blind date at the time know it would be a while before our food came out. So, we chatted and held off ordering for about 20 minutes. When we did order, the server parred down our options considerably and told us it would still be a 45 minute wait for the food to come out. The food was alright when it finally made it to the table. Perhaps this is why they've been replaced....

They wear latex gloves here and cheerfully removed them to make my order! :) YAY! I am allergic to latex and sometimes this results in a rather unfortunate scene in restaurants, so I really appreciate their willingness to work with me. Moving right along... The biscuits and gravy are GREAT! I highly recommend it. The half order is plenty. I like to get a scrambled egg or 2 and then dump them on top of the B&G to make it into an extra-special breakfast sundae. I don't recommend the ham, it was pretty fatty...almost bacon-esque. I tried a bite of my friend's pancakes and bacon and they were both good too. On the outside, Joe's Shelby Street Diner is cute, on the inside it is retro perfection. Red glitter-flaked vinyl booths and bar stools, a checkered floor, and a pressed tin ceiling. I wish I'd had a Martin Sexton CD in the car so I could've listened to him sing "diner my shiny shiny love" all the way home. Very small spot, so don't plan on too big of group all sitting together.

Its a diner! Food is great. Quick service. Beats the crap out of Denny's etc.

This place is pretty good. Great atmosphere, decent food (most of the time). Instead, if you have the time for it and you don't mind the drive/area, go to Mel's Drive-In in Mars Hill. Generally much better quality food.

What a boss joint on the edge of the University of Indianapolis's campus. Great service, delicious diner food and a great atmosphere. Bookmark this place!

This is a great place to relax and get great food! The atmosphere is fun and love the 50's music playing on the jukebox! The burgers are very tasty, the price is not bad at all and the milkshakes are awesome! If you love looking for fun 50's style diners to eat at, you should stop here. You'll love this place!

I am sad to report my lunch today was not good, okay maybe, but not worth the $12 I paid for it. I went with the Betty Boop Bacon burger and a side of fried mushrooms. Lets start with the mushrooms...um if they were fried mushrooms they are the cheesest and wierdest looking ones I have ever seen, they looked more like deep fried cheese balls. Not impressed no matter what they were. As for the burger, a bit over cooked and the bacon was well over cooked as well. The service was nice and all but when I shell out $12 for a buger/mushrooms and a drink, I would hope for something a bit better. Overall not worth my drive over there from the west side, which is sad because I love these diner type places....

This diner has a cool atmosphere. The food is good, but service needs improvement

This place is definitely what I would expect a diner to be. When you walk in, the first thing you see is a long counter with stools and the cook at the grill who greets you with a smile. The 50s decor is nice, but a little overdone. As for the food, I had a patty melt and fries which was very good. Price was very reasonable too. My only disappointment was that I didn't notice the milkshake mixer until I was on my way out the door. I'm sure they would be fantastic.

This UIndy student is sad she has been driving past this place for a whole year without stopping, I've been missing out. If you want, fast, CHEAP, solid quality diner style food...this is your place. My boyfriend and I finally made a stop in here last night. I was amazed at how cheap everything was! We started with the fried pepper jack cheese cubes. For 3.79 I figured we would receive a small portion, I was wrong because it was huge! Pretty basic app, the ranch left something to be desired but I wasn't excepting out of this world food at a place like this. Go for the milkshake! They have a real milkshake machine and it was DELICIOUS! I got the fish sandwich and he got the double cheeseburger, both with fries. The prices on the menu are for your sandwiches only and it's $1.75 extra for fries. Next time I'll probably skip the fries and try the onion rings. They were crinkle cut fries that may or may not have been Oreda red bag fries. Nothing wrong with them, just wasn't the biggest fan. The fish sandwich and cheeseburger were both great. With the appetizer, milkshake and both our meals, the bill was less than $25, WOW! The decor here is fun, it's very old so don't come here expecting anything fancy. It's just good, cheap food with fast and friendly service.

Great place to take you back through time and feel like a kid again. The ambiance is terrific for a 50s diner. The food is classic for good old fashion diner eats. This place is definitely a hidden gem!

The kinda place they know you by name, call you sweetheart, where old memorabilia still hangs on it's walls, and where the menu is predictable, but none the less delightful. I've loved going here since I was a kid. It's a small joint, you could easily drive by it and miss it. The regulars can be found crowded around the counter and new comers make their way to the side room adorned with "quaint" red checked curtain windows. Their onion rings are a favorite as is their classic burger: lettuce, tomato, onion. Unpretentious, but delicious.

Cute little diner right next to U of Indy. Breaded tenderloin served with chips was okay. My friend said the double burger tasted of the grill. Good, friendly service. I'd say, "just okay."

Huge food great price. The flavor is everything you would expect from a classic diner good flavor but bad for you.

Premium diner food in a funky atmosphere. The onion rings are so good and come in 1/2 foot or foot size ringed around a post like the cook was playing a game in the kitchen. Cool funky affordable.
