Sadly, Sapporo used to be my hibachi restaurant of choice in Indy, but not anymore. I'm forced to find a new one. On our visit this weekend: poor wait staff, SLOOOOOOOW service all around, the chef was either new or didn't know what the heck he was doing (i.e. my partner's salmon was THE LAST item taken off the grill, unacceptable for anyone who knows about cooking meat!!!), and it was not clean. The sushi is okay, but I'd go to Sakura if I wanted sushi as a main dish. Overall, I feel like the quality of the food, service, and chefs here is on a downward spiral. You shouldn't have to pay $75.00 for burned food!!!!

This, to me, is the best sushi place in Indy....and believe me, I have tried them all. The fish is ALWAYS fresh, the roll selection is amazing, the roles are HUGE and the sushi chef is great! I sit at the sushi bar every time and I can tell that the sushi chef's take a lot of pride in putting out great food. I am what some would call a "regular" here and I am always warmly greeted and my drink is served to me without even ordering it. The prices here are really low in compassion to other local sushi bars which is great! Every time I leave this place I am completely satisfied and completely full.

This was my first trip to Sapporo and I'm planning on going back, so that's a good sign! Our hibachi chef was really funny and entertaining. He did a great job on a crazy night with all of the seats filled. The food was great aside from the menu not having a vegetarian hibachi option. I went with the chicken, as that's about the only meat I can stomach. I'd prefer going back on a less-crowded night and asking them about just giving me a huge portion of vegetables and bean sprouts. :) Their salad dressing is phenomenal and the soup was rather good as well. The prices were a tad high, I thought, until I saw the amount of food. You really do get a ton so I guess that justifies the price!

We frequently travel to Indianapolis for family. As a result we eat out a lot while in town, and we've tried a lot of the area's hibachi/teppanyaki/sushi restaurants. We have decided that this place is by far the best. The sushi is delicious, fresh, and very well decorated. We have had a wide variety of sushi here, and every one has been very good and well decorated. The teppan is also pretty good, better than the average teriyaki fare. The only negative is the dark decor, but there is at least a large koi pond. Overall, the food really shines and outweighs this easily. This is a great place to bring families, they also celebrate birthdays with a cute pineapple boat. For a sneaky good meal, order the tofu teppanyaki!

One of the great reasons to come here is because it's a large restaurant. And because of that, you will mostly always find a table! IF you are in indy def. check this place out

5 Stars for table top cooking - 3 star sushi place. My family loves this place as do those of a number of co-workers. The sushi is OK - once it was great. But for hibachi dining skip Benihana and come here. The chefs are great fun - the food is consistent. The sauces are coveted by the family - we buy carry out sauces for our own cooking at home. For some reason my parents - (older) do not like this place = have not figured out why. The kids are crazy about it.

Best hibachi/teppanyaki in town, and much cheaper than the de facto Bennihana. Chef table-side performance is good. Food is very good. Sushi is excellent. Drink menu is decent. Service is good, although can be a bit intermittent. The only downside is the ventilation system need cleaned since the whole place smells like stir fry oil, including you by the end of the meal. Better than other hibachi/teppanyaki restaurants in town (e.g. Kazan).

This was a fun time. We brought our FIVE (yes, five) kids here for a back-to-school dinner after a long day of school shopping. It was the first time our children had been to a hibachi restaurant. The server was impatient and easily confused but the chef was pretty good. He had a smile on his face the whole time, but at times it seemed forced as though he was tired of doing the same schtick over and over again (which I'm sure he was). He did a really good job, though, considering he had to custom split our food orders up. It was also a bit of a turn off when, as he was preparing food for the table next to us, he kept leaning back to see what [tip] we had written on the check. The food itself was typical hibachi fare, nothing extraordinary. The sushi, however, was delicious and fresh; it was actually our most favorite part of the evening. My husband and I have been before on a random date night and dined in the sushi area and I believe the next time we visit Sapporo that's what we'll do again. Not anything against the hibachi chefs per se, but I don't like feeling like a chore when I'm dining. Not to say that all of the chefs will be the same, but on that particular evening, and maybe it was the fact that it was a Friday night, all three of the hibachi chefs were wearing the same mood. Overall, it was a fun time with pretty good food. The kids had a blast and the fiery, onion volcano that the chef built on the griddle was really cool. Next time, though, sushi and drinks will be our cuisine.

My first time here was with my wife and her Yelp Elite self. The sushi was waaaaaayyy above my expectations. I find it hard to find QUALITY sushi in town. This visit, we had the tribe in tow... ALL FIVE OF OUR CHILDREN! .... The hibachi show was dope! The sushi, again, didn't disappoint. The bill.... Well, we had five kids with us. What do you think it was like? Lol... I love my experience here and I will continue to visit... Maybe less, or even NO kids next time... I'm overdue for sake and a flaming volcano!

The flavors are traditional and classic and this restaurant offers a wide variety of Asian options. We like to start with the apple sake, made in house and very tasty! The yakatori and egg rolls are my top recommended appetizers and we love to split a combination hibachi plate with 1 or 2 sushi rolls. Service is always prompt and professional and we always leave satisfied. A great sushi / hibachi combination on the north side.

I skipped the hibachi prepared food and went with sushi. The Crunch Munch roll was fantastic. The Colts roll left something to be desired and the Dragon roll was a lot smaller and had less flavor than my favorite Dragon roll from Askaka just around the corner. Quick service and pretty standard in terms of offerings. Not amazing but not bad. If you want a semi nice dinner on a Saturday night with no reservations and a short wait time this place is perfect for you. The hibachi grills mixed with humidity does make for a muggy restaurant in July though!

Was here for a birthday celebration last night. This place is more like 2 1/2 but you're won't let me do that. Maybe they should fix that. The service was okay. The food was decent but the chef had very little personality. Usually when I go to these type of places the chef is funny and tells jokes and entertained everyone. He unfortunately didn't do much just cooked our food. That was a bit disappointing. also most places like this include fried rice. This place charges extra for it so Pay attention to that. This place defiantly needs to be updated, I think I when you're along long time ago when it first opened and everything was still exactly the same. Even the water looked like it hadn't been swapped out ! It was really dirty and cloudy. As a fish lover I felt sorry for the fish! Hey guys!!! You can do better, untapped potential than my opinion.

Ick. If you've ever had great sushi, don't go here. Nasty. The place smells like 10 year old air and the sushi is better in groceries.

I loved hibachi and hadn't visited one in a while so when the husband surprised me for dinner on V-Day I was pretty excited. We were at a table with a few other couples and one had a kid but that was great because our chef was really animated with him and made the dinner that much more enjoyable. The atmosphere is very nice. You walk in and almost right into a fairly large indoor Koi pond. Then the hostesses are friendly and quick. We were running late due to the weather and they improvised with no hiccups. We ordered hot sake and Sapporo which was imperative for the occasion and my husband got the NY sushi I think. He liked the sushi so there you go. Once dinner got rolling our chef was very enthusiastic, charismatic and, of course, hilarious. Very involved and constantly asked questions which was nice, sometimes I get awkward when the chefs are shy... The food hit the spot and the fried rice was so heavenly. I could eat plates of the stuff, like crack. The only complaint, and the reason behind the 4 stars, is that my chicken teriyaki was pretty tough and chewy. Just a little overcooked. But otherwise yummy. Will be sure to visit again!

Last time I ate here was on my twelfth birthday. I'm twenty three now and nothing has changed much but the collected dust. The food is exactly how I remembered though, stellar, impressive and very entertaining. The decor...is of course the same and now dated. The beautiful koi fountain is well taken care of as well as everything else however. I will be returning as long as they're in business. I'm really rooting for this place.

Went to Sapporo with my wife and son on Sunday and enjoyed a great meal and show! The chef was very active in engaging his audience and my son really enjoyed trying to catch some egg hot off the griddle in his mouth and watching the beautiful koi in the very large koi pond. We were seated with a rather eccentric family that was frankly pretty openly rude to the waitstaff but the Sapporo staff took their behavior well in stride. The food, once prepared and served with panache was super tasty--very flavorful! We look forward to going back.

Great sushi! Great staff! Every time I'm in Castleton and craving sushi, this is the place to go. They have a large menu but not overwhelming. The also have hibachi however I always go straight for the sushi. Fast service! Always delicious!!

Service and food was mediocre. My udon noodle soup was served with a whole egg floating on top. Problem is that the egg was half raw. I ordered a spicy scallop hand roll. It was OK, but nothing special. The food took over 20 minutes to be served and the restaurant was half empty. Won't be coming back.

I went there with my family we were 6 people the place seem nice food was decent but they over charger us like $26 for service charge just because we decided split the bill, original total was $144 but then we divided the bill and i end up paying $81.42 and my brother $88.70 thats a total of $170.12. I tried to talk to the manager she acted like a was crazy and she didnt understand, please dont go there unless you wanna get rip off

VERY DECEIVING AND DISHONEST! We've never been to Sapporos before and only decided to go b/c we had a coupon from Indy events coupon book that titled in big letters "FREE ENTREE" with an order of a hibachi dinner and value of $10.00. Well when we received our bill, the young server told us, "its only $10.00 off." Where in the world does it say $10 off? No where! We paid and tipped 20%. This has overall made a bad impression on us and don't like how they handled business. We will never return!!

(Visited 6/28/2014) We've all been to many restaurants that feature this type of cooking and show, but Sapporo's staff of chefs has them beat by a wide margin. Our chef prepared our meal with a flair that appears to be common with the restaurant and the outcome showed throughout our dinner. I chose the scallops and they were plump and delicious as well as the vegetables and rice items. If you've got a small group or large you'll enjoy this as the night we ate, a large youth soccer team took over part of the restaurant and 4 cooking tables. The night was filled will lot of good fun and enjoyment. I had wanted to order Sushi but I've experienced in the past that these types of restaurants lack the flair of having really good Sushi so if I want Sushi than I go to a Sushi specific restaurant and Indianapolis has many to choose from.

We've been longtime customers at Sapporo for a reason. Fast, friendly service and good food. The sushi here is always prepared fresh and skillfully. There's a good variety, too. Their menu items are well done. Try the shrimp tempura appetizer as an entree. Lots of shrimp to go with the sushi. It's a good family friendly restaurant and it won't bankrupt you.

The sushi and miso soup came out first and we were delighted to have chosen to eat here. They were perfect! Then came the hibachi chef. I'm sorry but if you do not have a Japanese hibachi chef then your hibachi is probably not going to be good. Whilst he was entertaining, all of our dishes were seasoned with soy sauce, soy sauce, and more soy sauce. I wanted to ask him if he had ever heard of sesame oil or pepper. The vegetables, meat, and fried rice all tasted the same. Sorry Sapporo, you have a nice ambiance but you need to season your food with something other than soy sauce. Your hibachi chefs should taste the garbage they're cooking.

We were really excited about our dinner walking through the door. Most Asian restaurants have some sort of water feature, but this one seemed over the top, or maybe it has just been a long time since we have seen one. Anyways that bridge over the massive and nicely decorated koi pond was telling us this place had their stuff together. Needless to say this place had the ambiance figured out. The prices were what is to be expected at a Japanese Steakhouse so no shocks or surprises there. The show wasn't all that great, the chef seemed to be going through the motions and just didn't want to be there. The food was decent, not the best we had ever had, but not the worst either. Nothing was overcooked, but nothing was memorable. We'll go back, but we aren't running back.

I went for lunch and the sushi was great. I was the only person there yet it took the chef over 10 minutes to appear and start making my food. I dont expect sushi to be fast but this was too slow

Sapporo could easily get a 4th star if their service was better. The food was good. I had the chicken teriyaki dinner and my wife and I split sushi. My soup and salad came out before my dinner, as you would expect. Then the sushi came out. 10 minutes after we finished our sushi, my dinner came out. I never got my diet pepsi till after I finished half of my dinner. It is family friendly, I think everyone came with children that evening. I do hope their service gets better and they earn that 4th star!

We went here with a bunch of friends for our annual February birthday celebration since a lot of us have a birthday in February. We were promptly seated by a hibachi grill and had our drink orders taken and ordered some sushi. The Sushi took awhile to get but I guess that's fine since majority of us ordered sushi and I think there was only one sushi chef working at that time. The sushi came out and looked great! I have been to a few different places and this one ranks up there for some good quality sushi. My wife and I split a hibachi chicken item and mainly ate sushi. Overall I like this place. we always get good service when we come here and will come back again

We have only ever gotten sushi here, not hibachi. The sushi is really tasty and fresh, and the "volcano" drink for two is pure tiki kitsch heaven! (complete with flaming volcano!) The decor is a little older feeling compared to some of the sleek new sushi places, but as one of the other reviewers mentioned, there is a pond inside that has a fountain and HUGE goldfish! I really like the pond and the fountain; it is fun to watch the fish while you are eating! (Eating... fish... whoops) The staff are also very friendly, and the sushi rolls are fairly creative compared to the standard rolls you find at a lot of other places. If you are looking for an upscale, trendy sushi place, this is not it. But if you are looking for a fun place to get great sushi at a reasonable price and non-pretentious atmosphere, this is a wonderful place to go.

I came here with my family a saturday night, we all ordered sushi... We wanted to order more, but they didn't have no more sushi rice -.- i mean is a saturday night and a restaurant..how are they not going have no more sushi rice???? So we had to just pay and leave because we couldn't order no more sushi. Sushi is great but i have tried better places. I think Tomo Japanese steakhouse is better.

I had lunch for the first time at Sapporo a few weeks ago with a friend. I was surprised to walk in and see the giant pool of koi swimming around- walking over the little bridge was pretty cool. I consider myself somewhat of a sushi snob. I typically have one restaurant that I go to, and compare all other sushi to this place. So I was more than pleasantly surprised to see such a wide variety of sushi rolls to choose from. BIG suggestion: Order the Sun Roll. It's not listed on the menu (not sure why) but my friend told me about it, and I only wish I had ordered more! (You can write Sun Roll on the top of your menu- do it) The sushi was fresh, full of flavor and beautifully arranged. The worst part was when I was down to my last pieces- I didn't want it to end!

First impression - well, underwhelming, minus the two cool ponds full of live koi when you walk in the door. Otherwise, the walls, floors, tables, chairs kiiinda remind me of Old Country Buffet, circa 1999. Our service was great - servers were very happy, friendly, and attentive. Our hibatchi chef (if that's the correct terminology) was nice, playful (but you could tell it was the same routine over and over). Food was good. Not overwhelmingly AMAZING good, but good. All entrees come with miso soup and a small salad, then the entrees (I had the teriyaki chicken) come with rice and veggies. Overall, I'd say it was a 3.5/5. Good food, but don't think it's enough to make me a repeat visitor....think I'll be looking to try some other great Indy Japanese spots.

Sushi here is delicious! A little pricey, but not terrible ... I expect to pay a little more when I eat sushi anyway.

I cannot say enough nice things about this place. But it all starts, for me, with the fried rice. They use a combination of Mustard sauce, Teriyaki and Soi Sauce to make something uniquely delicious. I have tried no less than half a dozen other similar style restaurants around Indy and this one is tops for the fried rice. They are always accommodating of my request for no veggies, ie onion or carrots or sprouts in my fried rice. Sometimes they bring it out from kitchen separate, others they go ahead and make in front of me on the hibachi grill.

  • Denise L.

I still have a blank stare about this place. Went with friends it was actually cheaper than most of the other hibachi grills. The waitress was nice & attentive. Food was okay personally I'd rather pay more & go somewhere else. Now for the blank stare. As we were leaving & other customers were still there. One of the employees was treating one of the hibachi grills with a raid pump. Not spray but the type that you physically have to pump.

The many good Japanese restaurants in Indianapolis set such a high standard, one goes to these places with high expectations. So compared to the average Japanese/sushi place in town, this is average, but it's good. The first thing you notice is the huge fish pond in front, with the HUMONGOUS over-grown goldfish (some are white, some multi-colored). Those things have to be 20 to 30 pounders. Holy mackeral, those things alone are worth a trip to see. The dining area is large. There are 10 hibachi grills (teppanyaki), plus plenty more tables-for-4 and tables-for-6. The sushi bar is pretty long too. I had the "chirashi" which is eseentially a sashimi sampler served over rice. I like this dish, because it's a bit cheaper per piece of fish than if you ordered the same thing done up artistically as sashimi or nigiri. Less labor-intensive to make, I suppose. Mine was very fresh, no fishy smell, and the fish had a very smooth consistency. The ambience/decor is nice but not real fancy, not elegant. Suitable to go dressed up, but also suitable for casual dress. Prices are in line with what they deliver. Their location is kind of hard to find if you don't know where you're going. They are in Castleton, on the North side of East 82nd street, between Center Run Road and Castleton Square proper. They are located a few hundred feet North of Denny's, in a long building that runs North/South. The entrance is on the East side of that building. If you're heading West on 82nd, turn right (North) into that little out-mall immediately before you get to Denny's, or turn into Denny's parking area. If you head straight for the front door of Dollar Tree, then Sapporo will be on your left, in the middle of that long North/South building. If you accidentally turn into Castleton Square, you have to come back out to 82nd Street, and head EAST, and start over as below. From Castleton Square's parking lot, you can see the back door to Sapporo, and there's a big Sapporo sign on the back of their building. If you're heading East on 82nd Street, turn left (North) onto Center Run Road. Turn left (West) at the first light (you'll see Subway on the corner.) Keep going until you're even with Dollar Tree's front door, then turn left (South) at Dollar Tree. Then you'll see Sapporo on your right, in the middle of that long building which runs North/South.

I have never been a fan of Japanese steak house place. We usually go to this place only for sushi and Japanese/Chinese meal. Their sushi is fresh and reasonably priced. They can be a little bit more creative with their sushi creation. Their lunch and dinner menu is pretty standard, but it tastes pretty good. If you go there before 2 PM, you can order their lunch sushi or other lunch menu for $10 and under. I love their sticky rice and chicken katsu or katsu don (although I can make this by myself at home). The kids menu is available, some of them come with french fries (what?). My children always enjoy the fish pond in the middle of dining area. It is fun for the family to go there.
