Used to eat here all the time. Loved it. My out of town guests requested it. Somewhere along the way PV lost their mission. Service has gone noticeably down the drain. Food is nowhere near what it used to be. Meat isn't well seasoned. The salsa tastes like boiled tomatoes. Beers are served lukewarm. This review is based on the last four experiences here. Finally, the wife and I decided to stop trying PV...we finally accepted the restaurant that we loved most in Indy is gone.

My wife and I have a lot of experience with authentic Mexican restaurants after living for years in Chicago, and this place ranks right up there with every place that we have ever been. The margaritas are great, the food was all spot on and the service was good. We will be back.

Horrible food: the cheese on my food tasted rancid. My husband ordered two different plates because the first one tasted so bad, he ended up not eating anything. Poor service: our server picked up his tip as we were getting up from the table, couldn't even wait till we were gone. Dirty: the table and booth felt like there was a layer of old grime sick to it. Save yourselves, and don't go.

My girlfriend & I love this place. Everything's always fresh and tasty and we've been customers for the past 5+ years. I always feel welcomed by the staff and feel as though I was their first customer every time. My kids love it too. There are few places where you get this treatment and it's a part of our frequency. We highly recommend this place.

There are a ton of good solid mexican restaurants around town, and Puerto stands with them all. Their chips and salsa are the perfect way to start with great flavor and a touch of heat. I recommend the fajita quesadillas, or the Ishmael's special. They always have good beer specials and tasty margaritas. The other big plus is that the entire restaurant is non-smoking now!

I drive past this strip mall practically every day and everytime I do I say, Yes, I must go check out that place. That was pretty much every day for the past 2 years since we moved into our house. So FINALLY we go and check it out and I am happy we did. The place was poppin' for dinner and the food was pretty good. I had fajitas because I couldn't decided and Dillon had a chicken burrito. He said enjoyed the burrito, but wasn't the best burrito he has ever had. It's located near us, service was fast, and the food was good. It's on my list of places to go when I want some Mexican food.

I saw all the other reviews on here and thought I hope it's a great experience. The restaurant is vibrant and full of great colors great decorations it really pulls the restaurant together. The restrooms are very clean and very nicely organized you rarely see that at a random restaurants, we were greeted as soon as we came in the door and service was very quick to get us our drinks and menus. The servers were all very nice and polite the food selection was amazing we went during lunch time as it was around 12 or 1 o'clock in the afternoon I ordered the enchiladas zuisas they were tender delicious very hot look towards my photo for an idea of how my food looked and it was very filling best part it was only $8.99 and for a big guy like myself there was a lot of food for a little price. The menus were not dirty or sticky the tables were very clean as well there were two tvs going at the same time with football games on so if you're into that they have that scene as well. This is definitely a place to try I will be coming back again definitely I saw many other people coming in as it started to pick up after lunch and all the tables were taken care of quickly did not seem that many people had to wait at all. I also ordered a shrimp quesadilla to go after I had finished my meal it was ready within 6 minutes I did not take a photo of it because it was so delicious when I ate it later I forgot completely and devoured the entire quesadilla which I would estimate to be between 10 to 12 inches long very very filling as well. I hope this gives you other foodies out there an opportunity to try this place.I was very blown away by the service, food, and quality that from previous reviews I have read had me not expecting to experience. congratulations to this restaurant if they have read these reviews and change what had been wrong in the past because they did everything right moving forward.

I went in for dinner yesterday. Ordered the burrito special. Service took a long time, and they weren't even busy. The waiter brought the burrito, said the plate was hot to be careful. The cheese wasn't even melted. I cut into it, took one bite, and it was cold. I tracked down the waiter, told him it was cold and we took the plate and walked away. Fifteen minutes later, another waiter came with the plate and rudely said "What don't you like about the burrito?" He was angry and mean, before I could say anything he asked louder - "What don't you like it?" I said " It was cold." He said "REALLY?" very sarcastically. That one wasn't hot and they didn't put sour cream on top either. NO One said they were sorry - they were mad at me for sending it back. I will never go there again!. I paid and they was never an apology. DONT go THERE to EAT.

We frequent this place because it's near our house, and not creepy. Within the last few months, we have been searching for a new place because we have become less impressed with the quality of food and service. I love the fajitas and the carnitas, and the husband usually loves the burritos. The service staff is never too friendly, but it's still a pretty okay spot for lunch or dinner.

This is my third time visiting and slowly but surely Puerto Vallarta is becoming my fave little spot on the Westside. The decor is nice and vibrant. It's always clean and the service is consistently good and quick although at times I feel a bit rushed. Their menu consists of your standard Mexican faire. Chips and salsa are served at every table. You can order queso dip for extra charge. This is a fun place to try something new. During my first visit I had the chimichangas. Oh my, they were freaking ridiculous! I thought about those chimichangas for days. During my second visit, I had the taco salad with beef. Blech! A flavorless mess. Tonight, I had the fajita quesadilla with shrimp. Wow! Delicious! Green peppers, onions, shrimp, and oozing with cheese wrapped in a tortilla. It was so, so, so, so good! Plus, they didn't charge extra for the shrimp like many places. Also, I ordered an ice tea. It was weak. Not worth it. As you can see, some menu items are winners while some you want to steer far away from. I encourage others to check this place out. It might take a bit of trial and error, but you are bound to find something spectacular.

Pretty standard unimagined Mexican fare. I've heard great things about the margaritas, although I was not able to try one at the time of my visit. The guacamole resembled the famous Nickelodeon slime, and was obviously not homemade. My carnitas were pretty ok, lots of fat on the cuts of meat though. I absolutely loved the rice though, making me think the number 1 seasoning used for it is "magic." The restaurant is decorated really nicely, but with boring food I don't see myself returning

Delicious! My friends and I in college would always got to Puerto Vallarta at Ball State University so I had to go to the one in Indy! Tastes just as great and is still my favorite Mexican restaurant!

I have friends who are obsessed with this place and want to meet here for dinner every time I am in town. At best, I think the food is mediocre, and at worst, kinda bland. The service is always good, though, and they're really great about accommodating a big group without any notice.

Just your average Mexican food joint. I live nearby and find myself here every couple of weeks for my mexi-fix. I can only comment on a few veggie items: bean burrito and cheese quesadilla are both good, kind of hard to screw those basics up. The rice is...typical. I do not like the quacamole here - at all. I think it had been pureed and I need some chunky avocado to make my day. The texture was all wrong. They do make a decent margarita and daquiri. The place is clean and bright, the staff is friendly and quick. If you're nearby and hungry go on in, but no need to drive out of your way.

I live very near here so my husband & I decided to try it shortly after we move to the area a bit over a year ago. We've been going back ever since. Honestly, I LOVE trying new stuff, but when I *really* like something somewhere & don't go there more than a few times a year, I tend to keep getting that item. Here, it's the quesadilla ala diablo. Chicken, chorizo, peppers, onions, & cheese in a HUGE flour tortilla with lettuce, tomato & sour cream (& choice of beans or rice...I go rice, but it needs salt & pepper). I always can only eat like a quarter of the damn thing, so for 10 bucks it literally feeds me 4 times. Chips & salsa are included of course & we always get the queso because it's good. I will say for my quesadilla being considered spicy, it's not...I always use the hot sauces on the table. The salsa is very mild too. My husband always gets fajitas with chorizo added to the mix, or the fajita quesadilla with chorizo added. I guess he just really likes chorizo haha. But he's never complained! The servers, like others have said, aren't super friendly but I'm wondering if part of that is a language barrier/cultural thing. I love the decor! Super bright & fun to look at, especially the chairs/booths. We will definitely keep coming here!

This used to be one of my favorite spots but I'm really disappointed in the food quality tonight. The shrimp fajitas had no flavor and the shrimp was dry, the chips were stale, and the beans varied from very soupy to a thicker consistency between mine and my childrens' plates. I really hope this was just an off night. The one plus was our server who was very attentive and friendly.

Authentic Mexican food is hard to find here in Indy and this is the best!!! The prices are great and as a family of 5 that's important. There is something for everyone and no one goes home hungry. I also get it to go quite often and it's always just as fantastic and wonderful as when we eat inside. Nice to have a place to go that my entire family can enjoy and is also easy on our bank account!

  • Steve H.

The food is pretty standard. You're going to find a lot of Mexican restaurants in the area that offer food of comparable quality. The decor and environment are what you'll find in many Mexican restaurants in the area making it somewhat forgettable. One thing I did like was the price. I thought everything was very reasonable and worth the money. No complaints whatsoever. I would eat here again if I was nearby.

I came to Puerto Vallarta for a quick lunch this week, and I have to admit that I was impressed. The food was pretty standard Indiana Mexican, but what really got me was the great service. My boyfriend and I were seated immediately, and our server was with us quickly. I appreciated that he kept an eye on us, and gave us refills on drinks and chips before we were even completely finished. Since I appreciate not having to ask for refils, I loved that he always kept my diet with lime filled! I got two soft tacos and a side of rice, and the boyfriend got the Speedy Gonzalez lunch special. Our food was out quickly, and was pretty yummy. It's what you expect when you come to a place like this- no better, no worse. If you're on the West Side, check it out for great service. You'll be in and out quickly, which is great for people with a short lunch break!

Puerto is the undisputed favorite hangout of Pike Township. We can't go there without running into friends from the community. The owners and staff have been serving cheap, fast, delicious "Indiana Mexican" food for 15 years or more. They always serve you with a smile, which is the main difference that brings customers back again and again. If you want fine dining or high prices, go somewhere else. Come to Puerto for the Tacos de Carne Asada, fresh chips & salsa, margaritas, and service muy rapido! Get a punch card when you pay your check, because you will be back again and again.

My favorite Mexican restaurant to go to in Indy. It's always busy and you ALWAYS see someone you know when you go in, but service is still very quick.

Did not like this food at all. Yuk! First of all the menu was overly crowded with too many choices and the print was very small. The nachos were nice and warm, but I think the Salas was made out of canned tomatoes. Surprising, it was the best thing to me in there. My meal was the shrimp fajita salad...yuk. The shell was gross. I think it was fried in peanut oil. The best part of the whole experience was the decore. A whole lot going on but I liked it. Will I come back here? No, no thank you.

Used to be my favorite spot. I loved the chicken chimichangas (way too small tho) and the rice is really good with cheese...Sadly the quality has gone down and the service never was all that friendly. There's one guy in particular (can't remember his name) who always looks like he is mad that you decided to come in. There are much better choices in the area.

Came in with my little man today on a whim because he wanted a chicken quesadilla. So I ordered that for him and a ground beef chimi for me. I was really pleased with my chimi...could have been a little bigger. Maybe I'm just spoiled with crazy portions. The beans and rice were uber tasty as well. My sons dilla tasted great but was in a pool of liquid so was really, really soggy. I didn't complain to management because he typically takes a bite of two of something anyway but he ended up eating a lot of it. Soggy apparently doesn't bother this dude. I order a small margarita. Be warned...the small is small. I ordered a second when our food came but never received it! Thankfully I was not charged for it. I would return, just being sure to stay on top if the server and make them aware if our quesadilla is soupy!

I'm not sure why this place gets such good reviews. I'm usually not picky, but maybe I've just had better-than-average Mexican food all my life. The atmosphere is typical, and the service is fine -- quick, if anything. Not overly friendly... they don't say much. But let's just say I've been underwhelmed with everything I've ordered here. I got the taco salad once... very bland. The margaritas seem very watered down. The fajitas were very dry. Maybe I'm not ordering the right thing. The salsa is ok, not life-shattering. Their guacamole definitely needs some seasoning. I will have to say, they have Mexican soup on the menu. I was intrigued... but it, again, underwhelmed. Seems like they rely on the vast amounts of cheese to make it passable. My husband and I are going to check out the place down the road from now on.

Chips were hot, salsa was normal. Guacamole dip was blended, not chunky. Shrimp enchiladas said they were covered with cheese sauce. In fact they were covered with enchilada sauce and had maybe a quarter teaspoon of cheese sauce. Rice was flavorless. Beans were good. Both were supposed to have cheese and neither did. The margarita was good. Shrimp enchiladas had small overgrilled pieces of shrimp, green peppers, and onion. It was all edible but I will not return.

Came here for lunch with my parents and I'm sad to say that this will be my first bad review. The salsa was soupy... I don't know if I could even call it salsa. :( but the salsa did make the chips bearable to eat. The margaritas were so watered down it was like you were drinking the last of the margarita right from the beginning. The beans were salty and didn't taste fresh. The rice was ok. Tacos were pretty good and the enchilada was probably the best thing we had... Collectively. :( I know I'm a little spoiled because I live in Chicago but this really is... Not the best Mexican food I've had in a while. I also know that this is not a very expensive restaurant but the quality of the food used was so very low. I'm so sorry to have to write a bad review but this restaurant needs to step it up if they want good talk about their food. Ps the service was good though!

My wife and I went here for dinner tonight, our first visit, and we were under some time constraints, so we thought this place would be prompt. We were right - the service was pretty quick, and the food came to the table in good time. The place looks pretty much like most local Mexican restaurants, pretty good sized seating area. The booths were nice and cushy but not too low. What was good: The chili relleno was very good, a very meaty pepper with just the correct amount of cheese, a nice fluffy batter and decent sauce; it was a pretty spicy pepper also, hotter than most I have had in Indy. The beans and rice were also better than most places, and the portions of them were satisfying, not way too much. The green sauce on my wife's two cheese enchiladas was very fresh tasting with good tomatillo flavor. The 12oz draft Modelo Negro for $2:75 was also a very fair price (as a matter of fact everything was quite reasonably priced). The less good: The chips were very hard, they needed to be a lot more tender. The salsa served with them was totally lacking in any flavor but tomato and perhaps a little chili powder, no cilantro, no peppers, no nothing. My wife's cheese enchiladas contained very little cheese, and here too the corn tortilla wrappers were quite tough. The beef in my beef taco had very little flavoring, although as a whole the taco was satisfactory - perhaps ordering a chicken or steak taco would provide more kick. I would really call this place about 3.5 stars - and I definitely will go back and order some different items (except the chili relleno, that's a keeper). It is pretty close to home, and the pluses outweigh the negatives.

This place was three stars for me, but to be fair my friends liked it a lot more. The food was ok. I ordered the combination with a taco, a burrito and an enchilada. The beef taco was very good. The cheese enchilada and beef burrito were bland. The chips and salsa were good. The salsa was much better after we added a nice amount of hot sauce. My friends split a pitcher of sangria and they loved it. The friend that ordered the taco salad said it was very good. Another friend said the same for the fajitas.

Its hot and fast for a work lunch.Food is average . Waiters act as though they are alert waiting for you to nearly finish eating so they can swoop in and take your plate away! once I was in the middle of a bite LOL. Chicken chimichangas extra crispy are pretty good.

The staff here is very friendly. The fajitas here are very good and there are frequent specials that are also worth checking out.

I've eaten here several times with my wife and on other occasions with friends and family who have small children. This place is the best. Great authentic food, homemade baked tortilla chips, homemade salsa, homemade authentic everything! Drink specials are pretty good too! The service is super quick even on the busiest Friday nights. The servers are also very friendly and customer focused. The fact that this place is packed nightly is proof positive that they are doing a lot of things right.

My go to Mexican Restaurant used to be La Hacienda. In fact, most of the west side called it home. Maybe it was the inconsistent service or the less than stellar board of health reviews but eventually it seems everyone began to convene at Puerto Vallarta. The menu is identical or just about to most sit down Mexican eateries. I dont want to say they all look the same to me...so I wont. The decor is familiar too. Extra style points go to the old guys holding shotguns under the banner of "welcome friends!" The service is a total crap shoot. This might be the best thing about "Puert". We have named our favorite waiter, Surly Mix-A-Lot. He is such a curmudgeon! One time we wanted to stay after our meal and talk a bit more so we ordered another big bud light and he rolled his eyes so hard that he did a back flip. Swear to God. other notes -they do ValPac monthly -Weds is their Margarita Pitcher special

Having been in this place an excessive amount, I still find the necessary craving to stop by during my travels. Located next to the amazingly large city park - Eagle Creek (a good place to stop and let your dog run in the dog park when taking a travel break) - this is a good one-two punch of eating too much inexpensive Mexican food and walking it off. They usually (and have for 9 years) have daily combo specials that will run you less than $8. Every meal comes with a basket of freshly cooked tortilla chips and medium salsa (you can ask for hot). they usually refill for free too! I personally think that their chili rellenos are the bomb digity! The one thing that stands out at this restaurant is their queso (also know as cheese sauce). I refuse to pass up their smooth and warm delicacy in the name of feeling fat or on a diet. Can't do it! I just think the consistency and the appliability of the queso is an award winner. The small is just fine for one (or two but that stretching it). I would recommend a take home if you hear me. Just don't ever warm up anything in plastic or styrofoam at home. You can also ask for grilled veggies or grilled jalapenos with any meal. Yumsterilla! Their ground beef is virtually fat free by texture an look. They also serve horchata. Seriously, the food here can rival any Mexican restaurant. The staff are all family and have been providing fast and courteous service since the doors opened. This is a must stop. Yea, I lived in Cali and love the food there too. But, we are in Indy Toto.

Don't get take out. They will put no effort in if they know it's for carry out. (Forgetting to put cheese on nachos?!) I've experienced this multiple times. Very disappointing because I used to like this place.

Two stars was actually generous I'm sorry to say. We went for fish tacos. I prefer my fish fried not grilled. Right under "Fish Tacos" on the menu (which were grilled) was another dish that also was described similarly except the fish was deep fried. We chose that, both ordered the same thing, I got a side of beans and we ordered 3 tamales to share. SOOOOO...the fish was fried but it was the whole damned fish. Eyeballs, gills, tail, etc!! We've been around food enough to not let that bother us but they were WAY overcooked, it was nearly impossible to find enough meat to make one taco, let alone three. The beans and rice were both over salted, no lime on the dish as described, and the tamales had no redeeming features either. Overall a pretty bad experience. The best part of the meal was talking about what kind of frozen yogurt we were going to have. Next stop....Yogulatte!!

My co-workers swear by this place, mostly because it's close and its cheap, but it also reminds them of grad school in Muncie. It's the first Mexican food place that I ate at in Indianapolis and part of me mourned for the simplicity of breakfast tacos and school buses armed with tortas that are synonymous with Texas, from where I just came. I ordered a chicken chimicanga, it was literally a deep fried burrito...not the crispy bigger than your head taste sensation that anyone from the Southwest knows and loves. It wasn't bad, I just wasn't impressed. The beans and rice were so-so and the table salsa was comparable to chunky ketchup. Blah.

  • Bill S.

The salsa with the chips tasted like canned tomatos. The cheese enchilada was pathetic. The service was slow. The salad was good and a large portion. The wine was cheap. Don't planning on returning but might if I lived closer.

Have I had better Mexican food? Of course. Have I had better Mexican food in Indiana? Probably. Have I had better Mexican food on the West Side of Indianapolis? Nope. I could go on and on about this restaurant. I'm sure that somewhere in the deepest corners of my brain that I have the ability to do that. The thing is. . .I was at a Mexican Restaurant and someone else was driving. Therefore, I drank too much to really be able to give you a clear review of the entire situation. Basically, this is a Mexican Restaurant. They serve Mexican food. Unlike most Mexican restaurants that are super Americanized, they don't add a lot of filler stuff to their food. For example, a bean burrito consists of refried beans inside of a flour tortilla. An enchilada consists of cheese inside of a corn tortilla. Everything is covered in red sauce deliciousness. The end. Except. I want to talk more about my margarita(s)(s)(s)(s). (That was plural for four margaritas.) If you're with a friend or planning on getting more than one margarita, split a pitcher. We got about six margaritas out of it. Or maybe it was five. Or it might have been seven. I don't really know because I was drinking them. And who counts the margaritas they consume? That's a silly idea now isn't it?

I almost always order exactly the same thing when I go to Puerto Vallarta, and I am never disappointed! The huevos rancheros is where it's at. I work not too far away and whenever the hankering for what ends up feeling like 20 pounds of corn chips hits me, I am on my way to Puerto Vallarta faster than (insert witty speed phrase here). Needless to say, I no longer have to convince my coworkers to come here anymore, as they have all found what they like on the menu and change their minds about their lunch destinations at the drop of a hat. The service is top notch, with more chips and salsa coming even when I know I shouldn't be having anymore, and just wait until you see how many plates the servers can hold on their arms. I mean come on, I have seen a guy carrying 10 plates of food to a table at a time, oven mitts on both arms, zipping through the restaurant just in time to please more happy patrons.

Hands down the best Mexican place I've found so far in Indianapolis. It was such a happy surprise when my friends took me out to dinner here on Friday, from the minute they laid down the salsa and chips, I had a feeling this was going to be good. The problem with most Indianapolis Mexican restaurants is that the "gringofy" the food too much so it is so bland and often really greasy. At this place, it was just as good as any I've had other places I've lived, and for the Indianapolis ethnic food scene, that is saying a lot. Their salsa is great, smooth and red and just spicy enough not to be overwhelming to most people but enough to satisfy those that like it hot. I had the carnitas, they were authentic and delicious. They came in big chunks that broke apart with a fork and were so tender and flavored perfectly. The refried beans were also great, the rice was just ok. I was so happy and amazed to have finally found a good Mexican place, I will definitely be coming back here whenever I have a taste for Mexican food.

If you went to Ball State or are from Muncie and miss some of the best mexican food around then you're in luck! There is a Puerto Vallarta in Indianapolis on the Northwest side, right off of I65. Everything I remember on the menu is at this location and tastes just the same. The margaritas are great too.

My favorite Mexican restaurant in Indy. PV's always has great service-- they're quick, attentive, friendly, and very excited to recognize patrons' celebrations. The prices are good, with additional daily specials on food and drinks. And the food: YUM! My go-to meal is the #12 special (chicken), but I have made my rounds through the menu and have always been very pleased. They also have huge margaritas and a nice selection of Mexican beers. And the carry-out option is always very efficient. There's a good reason PV's has so many regular patrons, and I think everyone ought to check them out!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization.
