Healthy Meal suggestions for Mississippi Belle

If Mississippi Belle had a commercial, it would be your group walking to the front door in slow motion with the song O Fortuna playing. Visiting Mississippi Belle is more like a conquest than going to grab a meal and in this conquest everyone wins. In case you do not know, everyone orders a meat and then you order four family style sides for the table. The fried chicken will always get the glory, but there are a ton of other delicious meat options that will hit the spot. My group usually goes for the mac n' cheese, sweet potatoes, green beans, and mashed potatoes. Everything is all you can eat so if you take all the mac n' cheese (guilty), no worries just ask for more. When dinner is finished, the table looks like a battle ground covered in bare chicken bones and empty bowls. You might have to loosen the belt as you leave, but how can you stop with such great food. I want to become a regular at Mississippi Belle and when I mean regular I mean once a month or every two months. While I wish I could eat there every week but, I think the Mississippi Belle conquest would overcome me.

Ohhhh put on your eatin pants. This place is the bomb and it looks like a bomb went off in there. It isn't pretty but the food is killer! If you like homestyle southern cooking, you will love this place. The portions are enormous! I ate two pieces of fried chicken and tried all of the sides. My goodness, sooo much food. Great price, great service. You have to try this place!

This was the worst lunch I've had in years, and I make Bologna sandwiches. I've driven by this place for ages and finally decided to pull the trigger after reading the yelp reviews. What a disappointment. Like, the biggest. The initial waft of nursing home stench and bad decor didn't sway my goal of having some delish soul food. How bad could it be!? The chicken was cold despite them opening at 11 and us getting there at noon. The Mac and cheese was definitely boxed. And the fried cabbage was just drenched in grease. I have no idea how everyone can rave about this place. Honestly, I'm flabbergasted.

Last night husbster & I met a Yelp couple at this new place for us. I was awaiting this comfort place for weeks & it didn't disappoint! All you can eat! Four of us, four meats, four sides, four drinks, & biscuits! -then we sprang extra for the chess pie!! For the 2 of us: Roasted Pork was really good Whole Catfish was incredible, my choice for next time Mac & Cheese was really good Greens incredible (not saturated w/bad pork grease or salt) Chess pie, sweet like sugar crème pie but w/different texture, don't miss this This place isn't busy very often considering the size, but it should be! For now, we will go on Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun nights for the busiest times & best food! -and take a crowd so you can order and taste everything! PS The servers were sweet helpful & southern comfort food gals. We really enjoyed their company!

Amazing! Living in Indy practically all of my life I had never been here and only heard about its existence a few years ago. Monday night I got to try it...and WOW was I ever impressed! Family-style dining at its finest, you eat until you are full. You get to choose your own meat and your table mates all decide on four side dishes to share. And everyone gets to try the hot water cornbread. I was able to sample the pork ribs and roast beef (both melt in your mouth delicious!). My meat choice was the pan fried chicken - outstanding! All the sides were delightful...my favorites were the fried corn and fried cabbage. And you must, must, MUST save room for a piece of chess pie! It is off the hook! Such a GREAT experience...we'll be back! And now we have a very special place to recommend to out of town guests!

Oh...my....goodness. Why have I not been here before? I was vaguely aware of Mississippi Belle, but had never been here until Monday night, when a group of friends chose this as the place to dine. It was....phenominal. Seriously, ever the top, home cooked heaven. A few highlights. Fried corn. It's corn. It's fried. There's really nothing more to say. Fried Cabbage. Cabbage? FRIED??? It works, and works well. Fried Chicken. Perhaps the best I've EVER had. Chess pie. I've never even HEARD of chess pie. Now it consumes my thoughts, my very being...and I keep trying to figure out how I can get down Keystone avenue so and can stop and get me some. On top of the amazing food, the employees really seemed to appreciate the fact that we were dining with them. We'll be back, and soon.

This place is a NIGHTMARE on Sundays! But if you can get past the long wait and no waiting area you have found a true Soul Food Gem. It's Family/big party style with an all you can eat option. Careful tho, if they refill your table u can't take the extras with you. This is not a meal you just eat and go to work, it's a meal that you eat, drink, and go to the gym after. The meat loaf is melt in your mouth. The chicken crispy, golden brown and juicy, the fish on Fridays is smack dap delicious! Venture out to mississippi belle! You'll be glad you did. And remember they DO NOT TAKE CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS, CASH ONLY. Saves you from having to run out to the gas station to pull the $ off. It's annoying and tedious after you've had such a wonderful meal!

I was prepared to get some great southern soul food and I was disappointed. Between me and my girlfriend, we had fried chicken, open-faced roast beef, mashed potatoes & gravy, fried cabbage, green beans and mac and cheese. I didn't like any of it except for the roast beef which was excellent and I would go back just for that. I only give this place one star over 2 because the beef was so good.

Food = 2 Price = 2 Experience = 3 While everyone was nice... the food is not. The pan fried chicken breast was tiny. The collards were bitter and the sweet tea was thick... yes, I said thick. I'm from the south. This place would not last a week in the deep south. It's also pretty dingy and run down... the menu looked like it had not been cleaned in several years.

Prepare to unbotton your pants... yessss, this is one of those place where you keep eating until you Champion the food that lies before you. And Champion we did. I love the way Mississippi Belle's ordering process works. Each diner picks their own meat - options range from some of the best pan-fried chicken known to mankind to falling off the bone ribs. Catfish fan? Don't miss the all you can eat catfish Sundays. Family style sides are included in the core entree price - pick 4 for the group. We opted for green beans, mac n' cheese, boiled cabbage and mashed potatoes and gravy. The buttery cabbage stood out as my favorite. Don't forget the suprise hot water corn cakes. Best part: everything is all-you-can-eat.THIS is what soul food tastes and looks like. Our table looked like a bloody battleground at the end of the feast. Food: 0. Diners: 1. Next time I will plan ahead to make it to the chess pie for dessert.

Yummy comfort food served family style. Little pricey, but I will be back! Wife says it is the best Beef Manhattan she has ever had. The staff was pleasant, and seemed to have a fair amount of traffic coming through. Only drawback was a 2 foot tall drawing of Obama's face on the wall.

Have you driven by a hundred times and wondered? I had and then was invited for a group brunch last Sunday. What a treat! Now don't expect anything fancy, make sure to take cash as they don't accept credit cards and most importantly make sure to fast for a few days so you can have room to fit it all in. The Southern meals are served family style and all you can eat. And in a group of 14, we had almost everything on the menu and it was all good. We had fried chicken, baked chicken, smothered chops, turkey, meatloaf, greens, mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, green beans, sweet potatoes, fried corn bread and finished with chess pie. There was so much and it was so good I had to ask if there was a time limit for how long we could stay. The staff was also a delight, friendly, joking, quick to respond and the prices were quite fare. I think with tip we all go out of there for $22 a person. If you haven't been and always wondered, well it's time to stop on by.

Been years since I had it. Decided to drop by and check it out. WARNING: This place is cash-only. I almost left because of that but there was a Chase right across the street. Had the meatloaf with collards and yams. Partner in crime had ribs with mac n cheese and collards. Meal & service was solid. Yams weren't overly sweet but still good. The sweet tea is delicious and you get free refills. Ribs were boiled and disappointing to say the least. Steer clear if you head that way. The lunch specials are a nice, affordable option. The dinner menu is set up great for large parties, free refills on drinks & sides. Country Kitchen is the gold standard for Soul food in Indy but if you can't make it, this spot will do. Nothing special...

Now this place feels like home. The way grandma used to cook. Be prepared to eat your share. For two people, we ordered fried chicken, pulled pork, collard greens, green beans, mac & cheese, and mashed potatoes. Oh, and a piece of chess pie for dessert. Oh, and cornbread which comes with everything. It was all delicious. The crazy part is that we could have ordered more of everything for the same price (except for the pie)! This is set up as an all-you-can eat. I highly recommend saving room for a piece of delicious pie. Two thumbs up. Best soul food in Indy.

Brought a friend on the strength of so many overly positive reviews. I have to agree; the portions are enormous, the staff is super friendly, and everyone gets "all you can eat" including the meat entree! We had ribs, fried chicken, and meatloaf - shared greens, mac/cheese, and cabbage sides. We couldn't eat it all. Didn't even get seconds. We were all very satisfied and left with doggie bags! With a generous tip we spent $20 each. Everything was delicious. So, why am I so stingy with the stars? The place is...umm... dingy. Stained carpet, no decorations, the register area is littered with old mail and magazines. Cash only. The place needs a reinvestment in furniture, flooring, paint, even the staff t shirts were old and stained. Don't let the lack of ambiance keep you away - it is well worth going to when it's time to put on a considerably tasty feedbag. It's basic, forgive the well worn appearance and have a seat, if you arrive hungry you will not leave that way.

The BEST home food around. Skip Iron Skillet and Hollyhock Hill and go here instead!

  • Derek C.

You must eat here! This is one of Indianapolis' best kept secrets. As the other reviewers mentioned, you should definitely wear your eatin' pants. The larger your group, the better the experience. Everything is served family style so you can try everything on the menu if you have enough people to eat all of the food. Many restaurants claim to serve southern style food and then bring out some modern/fusion type thing. This is real, down home cookin'. It's not fancy and it's not cheap (but it's not expensive) but you will count the days until you can come back. The lack of the 5th star is due to the interior decor and the shopping plaza. It doesn't take away from the experience but St. Elmo's or Oceanaire it is not.

So good! This place is fantastic. Anything that says unlimited refills on meat means 'Merica to me. First let me start with the wait staff - extremely friendly, extremely helpful, extremely efficient, and extremely supportive of my groups growing waistband. Thats all nice and all... but the food? DAT FOOD! Everything was fantastic. Amazingly good mac 'n cheese, impossibly good meatloaf, great chicken and catfish, great ribs, and just all around delicious. I didn't eat one thing I didn't want more of. ...and family style means they were nice enough to let us share whatever we wanted on our order between our group of ~9 people. Don't question it - just grab a couple of friends and go! Just watch out for the itis because it will not be far behind.

Came an hour before closing. They were out of most sides. The chicken was cooked in three day old grease at the very earliest. Greens were not seasoned. I would never go back or recommend anyone to come to this pathetic excuse for a soul food restaurant.

I had never heard of Mississippi Belle until Tony Dungy tweeted that it's one of his favorite restaurants in Indy. It's a soul food type of place and it's pretty darn good. My lunch of fried chicken (1 wing and 1 leg), mashed potatoes, mac & cheese and chess pie (basically pecan pie without the pecans) was great. Meals come with complimentary cornbread. The lunch fried chicken plate (with 2 sides) is $8.00. For dinner, they charge about $4.00 more for the meals, but the meat is all-you-can-eat! The building and the furniture are a little run down. You won't find anyone nicer than my server. She wasn't always the quickest to check up on me, but she was very kind and friendly.

FOUR STARS... ZERO CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS Mississippi Belle, just west of Keystone on 54th St., is the type restaurant you CRAVE. Their all-you-can-eat fried chicken -- or meatloaf, pork, etc. -- and sides are like eating at the house of a friend whose mom knows how to cook. Mississippi Belle is family owned and operated... and a clean, well-run place. Their only drawback is that they don't accept credit or debit cards. So, be sure to drop by an ATM enroute to this Soul Food experience. Closed on Mondays, we're told

I love this place it reminds me of home. Great food and service. I only wish they would take debit cards.

  • Michelle L.

I absolutely love this place! Best soul food in town... sucks that they don't accept credit cards so I have to cross the street in a not so safe area to pull out cash from an ATM at 8pm. Otherwise, food was awesome.

Okay I am from Memphis, TN. I grew up eating "soul food". Since moving to the midwest I really don't eat soul food or BBQ because I fear that I will be disappointed. That being said I tried Mississippi Belle last night and it was like a blast from the past. I had the pot roast, Mac n Cheese, Yams, Greens, and Fried Corn. Oh my goodness!! It tasted almost like a holiday dinner with my family down in Alabama. The server wasn't prompt but oh boy you forgot that the way that she greeted you as if you have known each other for years. The set up is as follows: Each person orders a meat and you choose four sides. It is ALL YOU CAN EAT! Not sure if that would benefit me but I can see this place packed on a Sunday after church. I am not a fan of fried chicken but from what I hear its the best. I hate that I discovered this place only a few months before I relocate. Guess I have some catching up to do. Yummy!!!

The Best Soul Food Restaurant in Indy as far as I know. The Pan Fried Chicken is probably the best fried chicken in town- even better than Iron Skillet or Hollyhock. Huge all you can eat portions, wonderful sides, fast friendly service, and even your soft drink is included. What more could anyone want?

My family and I were in Indianapolis visiting friends and they suggested we dine here for dinner. Driving up to the place and seeing both an empty parking lot and restaurant, I was a bit skeptical of what I was getting myself into. The place is located in a strip mall and the interior of the restaurant is dark, dreary and dingy (yeah, I was afraid). But hey, I'm a risk taker right?, so we went ahead and took seats. We we're handed simple menus. On the left side, their Sunday menu and on the right, the other days of the week. I'm sorry. I should have started this review off by first telling you this place is a family style, soul food restaurant. All the portions are huge and it's an ALL YOU CA EAT joint. As you finish one plate, their quick to bring you another one. Moving on. Since there were seven of us, we we're able to choose four side dishes and seven meats. Here's what we got: Meats: spare ribs, fried chicken, meatloaf, roasted beef, beef chopped steak, pot roast & roasted pork. Sides: macaroni and cheese, fried corn, mash potato's / gravy & fried cabbage. The ribs, well they fell off the bone when I picked them up. The fried chicken was cooked to a golden crisp brown and the meatloaf, lets just say most mothers would be proud. As for the sides. The mac & cheese was the first to fall victim to the empty plate. Next was the mash potato's and gravy. The fried corn was a little too juicy for me, but the fried cabbage made up for it's imperfection. This is one of those places you drive by and say "I wonder how their food is?" Well, let me take the guessing out your mind. It's some fine eats. I highly recommend the place. Oh, don't let me finish without telling you all the most important part of this review. If your don't read anything else, you BETTER pay attention to this. BRING CASH (unless you plan on doing dishes). They DON'T except plastic and they DON'T SERVE ALCOHOL. You'll have to get your drunk on elsewhere.

  • J T.

Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans....mmm mmm good. That IS some fine chicken. Potatoes come with gravy - you don't even need to ask. This meal reminded me of eating with my grandparents at the farm. Highly recommend.

This is the first time my husband and I visited this restaurant. We really enjoyed it. We had the family style meal of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, fried corn and cabbage. I don't know which I enjoyed the most!! They give us so much that we even brought some leftovers home. Also, the sweet tea is wonderful. If you go there...TAKE CASH as that is the only form of payment they accept. We didn't realize that but lucky for us I had just been to the bank. Great place...give it a try

ok so we went tonight around 6pm and the place was empty with the exception of a large party of about 25-30 people. the guy at the door sat us immediately and then we sat for a good 20 minutes without ever being acknowledged. Finally the janitor/busser laid his broom down and asked if anyone had offered us a drink or anything and we said no they had not so he went to get our drinks. about 10 minutes after that the server walked past us and said she would be right with us. what that meant was after she did about 10 things for the large party who were very needy by the way. This was very poor planning on the restaurant's part as they should have staffed for this instead of having their only 2 servers work that and the rest of the floor because who do you think they are going to take care of? 2 of us or that big party that they are hoping for a big tip from?? So we finally order our food and it came out rather fast, it was the worst meal i have ever had here. it was obvious they over cooked a lot of stuff to accommodate this big party so my fried chicken was cold. the mashed potatoes were not only cold but we could have eaten them with a straw so i suspect they were running low and added water to make them stretch farther. the sweet tea tasted like it had been refrigerated with something and took over that flavor so i sent that back and it then took 10 minutes to bring me a pepsi. service was non existent. if they only intended to cater to that party then they should have put a sign on the door saying closed for a private party. not sure that we will ever go back. and we drive 30 minutes to eat here about 3 times a month. I guess I could do like everyone else these days and throw out the race card. because we are Caucasian and the large party was all African American in a African American owned restaurant. When we went to pay the lady from the party in front of us was paying for her food as they all had separate checks and she and the cashier chatted and had a good ole time for about 10 minutes before leaving the counter so we could pay. And then when i tried to make small talk with the cashier she tried to race me out of there leaning way to the side to look at the people standing behind me. Just absolutely unacceptable service all the way around. It is bad enough that they inconvenience people with their cash only policy, but then to drive as far as we do to eat there and get treated like 2nd rate customers and be served bad food. I can eat at plenty of other places just as well. and it wont cost me $40 to do so.

This place has some of the best food in Indy. The fried chicken and pork chops perfectly seasoned.. So much food for the money and everything from scratch.

  • Carmen T.

If you are in Indy you have to go here. The food was great. Loved the style they served it in. The rIbs are not barbqued, they are baked and seasoned. However, I loved everything else we had, mac n cheese, collards were soooooooo good and the fried chicken was juicy and flavorful. Great family option. Pricing was $10.50 to $15.00 a person depending on what meat you chose. Peach Cobbler was the bomb. Only caution: THEY ONLY TAKE CASH.

There's a place where I go to dine in shame and fat pants. Not because it's a shameful place. Because the food is so good that you can't help but stuff yourself in a truly shameful manner. I'm talking comfort food at it's best. There's nothing fancy about Mississippi Belle, they don't take credit cards and don't serve alcohol. But what they do, they do well: soul food that will make your eyes roll back in your head. Everything is served family style and is all-you-can-eat. Each diner chooses and entree and the table decides on four sides to share. All dinners include corn bread, sliced tomatoes and onions and a beverage. Beverages are soda, lemonade, and regular or sweet tea. The kind of sweet that makes you think your straw should be able to stand straight up. And get this--your table's meal is rolled out on a cart! Now you know you should've worn fat pants when your food has to be rolled rather than carried! For me, the two best things on the menu are fried chicken and macaroni and cheese. In fairness to some other restaurants in the city, I can't say that Mississippi Belle has the best friend chicken, but that's because there are a few well-known chicken places I haven't tried. But it's the best chicken I've had to date. The outside is super crisp, yet doesn't have too much breading--the juicy chicken is the star. As for the macaroni and cheese, I can't put my finger on exactly what makes it so special. I suspect they use a blend of cheese and "cheese product" which would normally horrify me, but all fanciness went out the door when I mentioned fat pants. All I know for sure is I could make a meal of the macaroni alone. But don't do that, because you'll totally miss out on everything else. Like the slow roasted pork that practically melts in your mouth. Or the homestyle green beans. Or the creamy mashed potatoes. And oh, that hot water corn bread! Anything that good probably contains lard or bacon grease. I'm sure that pork fat in some form was involved. Although there isn't anything bad on the menu, I do have a couple of critiques. The ribs were too fatty for my taste--I really wanted more actual meat. And the sweet potatoes were actually too sweet. But again, that's just my personal preference. For amazing food and well, not much else, I give Mississippi an overall rating of 3 stars.

Great food!!! Greens and corn bread were amazing! Sweet tea was a plus too. I will be going back.

  • Ryan M.

I am a HUGE fan. The food all looks and tastes fresh. It is clear the corn was cut off of a cob by hand, that the mashed potatoes were actually mashed in the back, the gravy was made from scratch, etc. It was all very good, our server was very friendly. LOVED IT

  • Corrine P.

This place is delicious! It's a pretty good deal too. You order a meat per person and 4 sides to share. We ordered the catfish and fried chicken! Make sure you bring cash because it's cash only!!

    (5)
  • Adam C.

Based solely on the fried chicken and pork chops this place is worth a visit. A few things you need to know, they accept CASH ONLY and dinner is basically served family style. You order one entree per person, then the table agrees on 4 sides. It is all you can eat with one exception, you can not get to go boxes after seconds are ordered of anything. We tried fried chicken and pork chops with sides of mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans and mac&cheese. Highlights were the entrees for sure, top 2 of both I have had anywhere. Not much breading, which I think is a good thing, but still a ton of flavor. The sweet potatoes were pretty awesome, just sweet enough. Green beans oddly had a hint of sweet to them, but I thought they were great. I hate when places try to make fancy green beans, this is how they should be making them. Now as for the mashed potatoes, they were just average, not bad but I was hoping for more. Same with the mac&cheese, it was just ok. It would be so easy to step the sides up a little and make the meal awesome from start to finish. The staff was great, very friendly. They seemed under staffed but the server was on top of things. Food comes out quick and hot. I was surprised it was hot as quick as it came out, but everything was a good temperature. On a busy day I would guess takeout is ideal, but we had no problem walking in at 8pm on a saturday. Once again Yelp, I would never have went here without Yelp, glad we found some of the best fried chicken in the midwest.

We have eaten here two times in the past 2 weeks so it is time to give it a public big thumbs up! "Yum!" "Pass me some more of that Cozy Comfort Food" "OMG! I'm Thanksgiving Full" will be just some of the things that will be uttered between bites and after dining at Mississippi Bell. It is located in a non-descript mini strip and I have been driving past it for years; they used to hang out a big banner that said, "You MUST Eat Here!" and they are right- YOU MUST! Family style dining, each person at the table selects an individual entrée and the table agrees on a number of sides. Tuff choices to make because - it's all good. Here are some of our favorites - the best ever pan fried chicken, melt in your mouth slow roasted pork, the most tender pork ribs on a bone. All the sides are great, but Cheesy Mac is always the big winner. It is unlikely that you will save room for dessert, but if you do, the Chess Pie is a sweet sugary treat for sure. Belly too full for dessert, no big deal Lucille just order it as a carry out and take it home to eat another day! Go on an empty stomach, bring cash (they don't take cc) and wear your stretchy pants because the temptation to eat to the point of explosion (but sir its just one thin mint) is ever present.

Loved it. So tasty, and the all you can eat makes it totally worth the dinner price tag. My boyfriend and I shared the smothered chicken -yum- and beef manhattan with collard greens, mashed taters, mac and cheese, and green beans as our sides and home made sweet tea as our drinks. We loved the hot water cornbread as well. They let us take the beef manhattan and greens home because we had left overs and had not asked for refills on these items as we did with the potatoes, chicken, and corn bread. Very cool. The all you can eat aspect of this place makes it better than Kountry Kitchen in my opinion. Oh, remember it's cash only though.

    (5)
  • Denise L.

Hands down best "soul food" restaurant in Indianapolis. Puts Kountry Kitchen to shame! Come in on an empty stomach, & where sweats. First thing is its family style food. If you order dinner everyone picks a meat, & then you all choose between four sides. They refill the meat & sides until YOUR done. The best part about the refills is you can try other peoples meats, so the smart thing to do is to have EVERYONE order a different meat. They usually don't let you take food home IF you get a refill on anything. Usually a few minutes after you order your food they are wheeling it out on a cart. The half dollar sized hot water corn bread is GREAT! The fried chicken is always cooked to perfection. The smothered chicken is actually drowning in the gravy. The ribs are literally falling off the bone, & they bring it out with the sauce on the side. The sides are always great a few are fried corn, macaroni & cheese, sweet potatoes, collard greens. The sweet tea I swear has to have a pound or two of sugar in it, so good! As far as desserts...honestly I don't know because whenever I go I'm so stuffed from food that dessert is not an option... The only thing I can truly say I dislike is that they don't accept credit cards. This is also one of the only soul food restaurants where they're not out of something every time your in.

  • Nikki B.

Okay me & my son went back to dine in & there where no all you can eat sides! Just wanted to update this. Plus I spent $9.75 which includes my drink and one extra side. Just a little side note they have different cooks cooking each day & let me tell you, the mac & cheese for today was pretty disappointing. It was alright, nothing to get excited about. But everything else was on point. I got the smothered chicken, mac & cheese, greens w/onions, sweet potatoes & hot water cornbread. My son sampled from my plate, but he ordered the roast beef & he had stuffed his self to say the least. This place will be revisited again, in a couple of months, because I have to keep my figure! lol! I definitely have to show restraint, when it comes to this place, because I crave it like I ...........well you get the gist!

The food is amazing if you are looking for a great soul food restaurant in Indy. The side dishes are the best as far as the meat it was just ok, wasn't bad though. The ambiance isn't the best but at least it's clean. Our server was ok. We will be returning to say the least

Are you ready? Are youuuu readddyyy for a feastival? Mississippi Belle treats you like family and feeds you until your heart and belly are content. This is true homecooking, so maybe a couple of items might be a bit off. Choose one meat for each person and four sides for the whole table and it is on. They bring the sides out in these enormous salad bowls and keep it coming. They'll give you as much meat as you want and even let you take the leftovers home. The hot water cornbread was great. I would order them by the dozen for takeout if they would let me.

Had a craving for fried chicken and since I don't fry at home anymore, we met our daughter there this evening. We had the fried chicken, baked chicken, ribs, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, green beans and mac and cheese. This was served of course with the cornbread and sliced tomatoes and onions. My husband and I had the lemonade, it was tart and refreshing. What a meal! We all ate like little piggies and had excellent service and will definitely make this one of our regular dining spots. I can't believe there was such a jewel in the neighborhood and it took us so long to try it. I would love to go with a group so we could try everything. As usual I was introduced to a terrific restaurant by my fellow yelpers.

Great place! The food was great (except for the roasted pork and the beef steak - the pork was salty and had a weird taste...the beef steak just tasted horrible to me). I probably could have gotten a vegetable plate and would have been very satisfied. The veggies were great! My youngest boy doesn't eat a whole lot, but he tore his food up at this place! He had thirds and ate all his veggies and about 3 pieces of chicken = very uncharacteristic of him! Dee was great! She was the waitress, cashier, and manager seemed like! She normally doesn't work on Saturdays, but I'm glad she was there last Saturday. We didn't even ask about desserts, since we were already full. News Flash: They only take cash! Get your money together!!!

The Belle's "family style" dinner is what I wish I had done for Thanksgiving. All your southern favorites, including the best fried chicken in the city, fantastic sides, and gravy wherever you want it. I asked our server if anyone ever wanted to give her a big wet kiss after they ate there and she said, "No, but I give out hugs." After eating a huge, amazing meal, it was the perfect finish. Trust me, you'll want to hug someone too.

If I could, I would just simply review the Belle like this: Best Restaurant Ever. Seriously, this is one of the best soul food joints on the planet. I would take that to the streets any day, anywhere. Mississippi Belle, known for its family-style servings of southern soul food items such as ribs (best I've ever had by far), fried chicken (amazing), corn bread, sweet potatoes, green beans and such, is flocked by families around Indy who appreciate that type of cuisine and dining style. Show up on a Sunday and you'll find yourself amongst a giant crowd of post-church, hungry people. The Belle has a cult-like following, and rightfully so, as the food is considerably better than what its competitors offer. The family style portions, which keep on comin,' will never have you walking out still hungry. Not possible at this spot. They'll even let you take home what you don't eat. Plenty of parking, located just west of Keystone on 54th in what appears like somewhat of an odd location. Make no mistake, though. This is one of the best restaurants in the city, and between the decor and the friendly service, it feels like eating in grandma's dining room. Sooooul Good!!! Be sure to take cash. They don't accept any plastic.

Go. Don't wait. It's delicious, homey, welcoming -- all the things you want in soul food. While the decor is almost rustic (i.e., very basic), the food is definitely the star. We went on a Sunday afternoon, so the meal was served family-style. Each diner chooses a meat, and four sides are served for the table to share. The meal also included the most perfect hot water cornbread I've ever had! I had the ribs and a piece of fried chicken (you can buy single pieces of chicken). My husband had the roasted pork, which is sliced thin and served with gravy. All the meats were well-seasoned, moist and tender. I don't think the ribs were grilled, but they were still very good, and falling off the bone. For our sides, we had cornbread dressing, macaroni and cheese, green beans and yams. Everything was very good; though the green beans were a tad soft, but still tasty. When we first arrived, the place was nearly empty, but by the time we left, we had to squeeze through people to get out. It was packed! We also got a couple of desserts to go. They had peach cobbler, cakes and sweet potato pie. I got the cobbler and hubby got the pie. The cobbler wasn't my favorite, but Honey, that sweet potato pie? You know what we say, "it make you wanna smack your mama!" lol It was delicious! All-in-all, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The service was good and FAST! Our food was wheeled out on a cart within less than 10 minutes after we ordered, and it was all hot, and tasted fresh. Our waitress was incredibly sweet and friendly to EVERYBODY! It was like having dinner at the church because lots of folks in there knew each other. :-) The only low point of the experience, besides the peach cobbler, is that this place is CASH ONLY! Not a good thing. I have forgotten cash a couple of times, and though there are banks nearby, this is just plain inconvenient!

Really nice southern/country cooking, and it's all you can eat, with the beverage included in the cost of the meal. (It's cash only, by the way.) The fried chicken is absolutely delicious, as were the collard greens and macaroni and cheese. The green beans were really tasty but had been cooked to the point of being almost mushy. The best part about it? Every single person working there was friendly and honestly seemed to enjoy being there.

I love this place! The fried chicken is some of the best in town, and I could easily eat their silver dollar hot water cornbread for all 3 meals. The all you can eat sides can be a little hit or miss- but when it's good, it's great. I also love the service and I recommend the Uptown- half sweet tea half lemonade.

10 tips before dining at Mississippi Belle: (01) Make sure your stomach is empty before coming, and make no plans to eat afterwards. This meal will stuff you to the brim. My pick: Sunday lunch. (02) Wear stretchy pants and leave your belt at home. Portion control does not exist here. (03) Do not be dismayed by the decor and the vinyl table cloths and seats. Do you come to a restaurant to gawk over the interior? No, you come to eat the food! (04) Bring friends. Although you order your own meat, you share the sides, and all of the food comes with free refills. (05) Do not bring any friends who are on a "health kick". There is virtually nothing on the menu for them, and they will be horrified by the "unhealthy" options. (06) Meatloaf is a fine choice. The beef combined with the bits of veg. are super moist and saturated in a tangy red sauce. It's just as good, if not better, than mom's. (07) It is perfectly acceptable to order both the mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes during your visit. Both contain butter and love and more butter. (08) Do not be ashamed to ask for a refill of everything. Delicious home-cooking deserves to be properly appreciated. (09) Try to save room for dessert, but know that there's no chance that will happen, because you will eat enough of it in sweet potatoes. (10) Fit in a post-meal nap, because you're bound to go into a food coma, and remember that you can always go for a run tomorrow.

If Indianapolis has something, it's this! Mississippi Belle is BOMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It just so happens that we came here when they were having their Sunday Family Style deal. I'll get into that in just a second. This restaurant had plenty of parking, which was nice. Our waitress was on it! She was taking care of half the restaurant and didn't seem to miss a beat. The waitresses and waiters seriously work their tushes off here. So let's get to the food now, shall we? Here's what the Sunday Lunner Special included: Each person picks 1 meat and everyone shares 4 sides(these a huge sides). So we ordered: Fried chicken Ribs Collard greens Sweet potatoes Mac and cheese Cornbread dressing That was THE BEST FRIED CHICKEN we've ever had in our lives! It was just perfect. The ribs were good, but not AMAZEBALLS like the Fried Chicken. All the sides were on point. It was the first time we had cornbread dressing, it came with slices of tomatoes and onions. We found ourselves really enjoying it and craving for it a few days later. The tomatoes and the onions complimented the cornbread so well. So for the Sunday Lunner, you can opt to do the All You Can Eat, where you can get unlimited refills of the meats and sides. The only catch is that you can't take any leftovers home. There was so much food already that we didn't even need to order refills for anything. The sweet tea was also bomb! SUPER TIP: IT'S CASH ONLY!!!!! So come prepared. Will we be back? Oh god, I hope so!

The hot water corn bread was surprisingly good, I'd go back for this and maybe the ribs. The chicken and fish together with the greens, mac&cheese, corn and sweet potato sides were just alright. Not a fan of the cash only setup, but the price was good for the amount of food you can get.

Oh, let me count the ways that I love you! Mississippi Belle is the absolute place to eat if you love good old fashioned home cooked food, or soul food as they sometimes call it. They serve you family style which means the food keeps coming and coming and coming as long as you want to stuff yourself. You tell them when to stop bringing the food. They have meatloaf, rubbed ribs, fried chicken, smothered pork chops, roast beef to name a few and then of course the sides which are macaroni and cheese, fried corn, fried cabbage, sweet potatoes, green beans, greens, mashed potatoes and gravy. They are all great choices, you won't be disappointed. The ordering process goes like this...each person orders a main dish and then you can order 4 sides. You also get your drink included. They have sweet tea of course along with pepsi products and lemonade. The food is beyond fabulous, it truly is like Mama's cooking. The ribs fall off the bone, the meat loaf is just like you remember from childhood, it comes with an amazing sweet and tangy ketchup sauce. The smothered pork chops are so tender they fall off the bone and the gravy makes your eyes roll back into your head. The fried chicken is perfectly seasoned and always fresh. Make sure you wear some comfortable clothes that leave room for expanding because you will need them when you visit Mississippi Belle. I have been going here for years and have never been disappointed.

Our group of 5 had dinner here last night. We arrived at 6:30 and there were only 3 other tables occupied. We had read reviews prior to going so we were prepared to pay with cash. We had never had salt water cornbread or fried corn before. Everything was delicious. Our server, Sandra, was very nice. We did not need to ask for refills on any of the food and a lot of the leftovers were taken home. Everyone left very full and very happy. We will definitely be eating here again.

I love that this place is so close to me. I'm from the south and sometimes you want comfort food that reminds you of home. This place is just perfect for that. I only go at lunch when it's cheaper. I have had the meatloaf and fried chicken. Both were really delicious. I always get the green beans, Mac n cheese or mashed potatoes with gravy. I've never had a negative dining experience, ever. And I've ate here many times. The decor is just sad. But I don't think people eat here because of the ambience. There is plenty of parking. They only do the family style dining at dinner time. It costs almost twice as much as eating lunch. Never seen the restaurant crowded but the staff is always very friendly and prompt. Bring cash, I don't think they take credit cards.

So this was my family's first time here to the highly recommended Mississippi Belle. I have to say, I was disappointed. I had high hopes coming in because so many people had nothing but great things to say. I will say that their service was good, but the food, just ok. We were greeted very warmly and our waitress was nice. I'm not trying to be a downer, but it wasn't worth the trip. I had desired some smothered pork chops and we didn't want to drive to Kountry Kitchen so we figured we'd give this place a try. The pork chops were very dry and the gravy not very flavorful. The sides were bland. Hot water-cornbread....not a fan. I will say their Mac and cheese was great: it reminded me of my aunt's Mac and cheese. Many people may not like it because it was a bit peppery, but it has its place. The fried chicken was ok; nothing special. One unique thing I found about this restaurant was that, they offer a sort of buffet-family-style setup. When you order, everyone picks a meat (you pay per meat) and everyone at the table shares 4 sides. You can eat as much as you want, however if you order 2nds, you're not allowed to take your food home. I understand that policy, because it keeps you from ordering food you're not going to eat, but isn't that a waste. Aren't they going to throw the food away anyway? Or are they??? I know when you go to a buffet you can't take food home, but you also don't have food sitting at your table. You go to the line and get the food you want. And they throw the food away from your table. There's no food sitting under your breath and they come to clear the table, not sure what they're doing with the food..... I don't know. That thought alone troubled me a little. We probably won't go back.

It is always a pleasant experience when we dine at Mississippi Belle. First of all, the service is always friendly and welcoming. Everyone chooses their meat then the table shares four sides. You can take your leftovers home, unless you get refills during dinner. The restaurant is cash only. I love their baked chicken as well as the fried chicken. My husband says their beef Manhattan is the best he's ever had. Their chess pie is also delicious, if you have any room left at the end of the meal!

Bring friends.. the amount of food you get is too much, one meal could feed two. The fried chicken is classic and done right; the meatloaf was very good. The mac and cheese was amazing- cheesy, creamy, heavenly etc. The mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans were great as well. Their fried biscuits were the bomb! Get the sweet tea.. The food was great and well done, but the service was even better. Our waitress was a total sweetheart and guided my friend through the infinite amount of choices on the menu. Long story short, go to Mississippi Belle with a group of friends and try everything on the menu.. it will not disappoint! P.S. We had zero room for any dessert, but our waitress said only on Sundays they make peach cobbler that is out of this world.. it looked like a dish of heaven!

This resturant is amazing! Served family style. Each person picks there meat and the table chooses 4 sides to share. Our table got meatloaf, fried chicken and porkchops. With fried cabbage, green beans, mac n cheese and mashed potatoes with gravy. We loved everything. Remember this is a CASH ONLY restaurant make sure to stop by the bank on your way!

  • Nolando T.

Hold up, hold up. Hold. The. Hell. Up. Free refills on the meat and sides? Say whaaaaaaaaaat? Yes, that is correct. Although, if you do get refills on the food you can't pack it up and take it home at the end of the meal. So eat your fill if you get refills. And with the way the food tastes here, you'll probably get refills. We came here on a Sunday and had the fried chicken and the ribs with collard greens, sweet potatoes, Mac and cheese, and the cornbread dressing. As good as I've had anywhere and that includes home made meals made by friends from the south. I also read that service here was bad. We didn't experience that at all. Our server was kind, courteous and checked on us regularly. If you're in Indy and got a craving for some southern food then this is the place to go! You won't be disappointed.

I'm sorry but I just don't taste it. The stellar difference between this place here and Kounty Kitchen is not a question; Mississippi Belle underperforms. My sister and I stopped by yesterday as we were in the area and based off reviews on Yelp. But we were not a little bit surprised that the food DID NOT live up to the hype. Mississippi Belle is in a small complex off to the side of 54th street. Once you get inside, there is not much decor wise, though they try. Bathrooms were clean. Service was good and personable. In fact, she allowed us to sample the ribs and pork chops before we got them. Per the server's' recommendation, we got the all you can eat meal. I got the ribs, my sister got the smothered chicken. We ordered the mac & cheese, greens, mashed potatoes and yams. We also got pork chops on the side.. and thank God we did as that was the star of the meal. Juicy and breaded well, the pork chops delivered. I love the sweet potatoes. But the greens were standard. The mac and cheese was made straight from blue box, just with more pepper than usually (I HATE when mac is made like that) and smothered chicken lacked favor. The cornbread was fried really hard...left much to be desired. My ribs were alright; came off the bone. But same in comparison to Kountry Kitchen or Good Home Cooking. Nothing special though. We didn't get refills for the all you can eat meal. We think our server got the hint we were dissatisfied. I still have ribs in my fridge. We moreso left questioning if the need to visit Kountry Kitchen because maybe they had changed since we have been. Proclaiming on its menu to the best in Indy, this place failed to bring it. I would skip Mississippi Belle and plan to do so for now on.

FRIED CHICKEN!!!!! This is the best fried chicken since my grandma was alive! Mississippi Belle would have made her very, very proud. Rib meat falls right off the bone. Incredible breading on the pork chops. Excellent Greens, Corn, fried Cabbage and Sweet Potatoes. Sweet Tea just like grandma used to brew. Double thumbs up to Mississippi Belle!!! Everyone at this table is full and smilin' ear to ear :) Yes to the FRIED CHICKEN with DARK MEAT!!!

I love Southern food. They really did a great job of it here. It's simple food but I have had mixed results in my travels across the South and was pleased to find better than average soul food in Indianapolis. I had the fried pork chops, Miriam had the fried chicken and we split them. We shared 4 sides. Sweet potatoes, collard greens, green beans and mac and cheese. The fried chicken was excellent and neither this nor the pork chops were the slightest bit greasy. The chicken was moist and the breading nicely seasoned. The pork chops were overcooked and really tough but delicious. The sweet potatoes were sweeter than my sweet potato pie. They were dessert right there. I did love the greens and the green beans and mac were also good. As if that wasn't enough food, you can get refills on anything you want inclusive and your dinner comes with corn bread, sliced onions and tomatoes. I will definitely be back when in the area next time.

  • Tim R.

I absolutely love this place! Best soul food in town... sucks that they don't accept credit cards so I have to cross the street in a not so safe area to pull out cash from an ATM at 8pm. Otherwise, food was awesome.

I am a HUGE fan. The food all looks and tastes fresh. It is clear the corn was cut off of a cob by hand, that the mashed potatoes were actually mashed in the back, the gravy was made from scratch, etc. It was all very good, our server was very friendly. LOVED IT

This place is delicious! It's a pretty good deal too. You order a meat per person and 4 sides to share. We ordered the catfish and fried chicken! Make sure you bring cash because it's cash only!!

This place has the best home cooking your ever gonna get.. There is nothing on the menu that is bad.. Be sure and get the fried cabbage and the green beans.. The Hot water corn bread is amazing and a must have.. The waitresses are very attentive and give you awesome service.. I HIGHLY recommend this place.

  • Debra M.

Go.

I absolutely love this place! Best soul food in town... sucks that they don't accept credit cards so I have to cross the street in a not so safe area to pull out cash from an ATM at 8pm. Otherwise, food was awesome.

  • Dawn C.
