I visited the Melody Inn on Saturday, 3/23/13, for Punk Rock Night. For what it is, The Melody Inn is a decent place to enjoy music. Pros: The patrons I met at the Melody Inn were all courteous and respectful. There were no college aged idiots causing problems. The crowd was ecelctic; ages ranged from mid 20's to mid 50's. The beer was inexpensive and they offered local breweries (I am a Sun King fan). The staff was friendly and accommodating, even during the busier periods of the night. Cons: The main bar area is very small; it is easy to feel claustrophobic. Due to the small size of the room there is no chance to talk while the band is playing. It was very loud no matter where you stood in the room. To be fair it appeared as though there was a small room in the very back of the bar; however, it was so far removed from the rest of the bar I would not have wanted to go back there anyway. Whether it is actually true or not; my perception was that the bar was absolutely filthy. I wanted to take my shoes off when I got home as to not track in whatever sludge I brought back from the Melody Inn. The restroom in particular was a nightmare. However, this wouldn't be the first "dirty" bar I visited in my lifetime; the lack of cleanliness isn't enough to prevent a second vist to the Melody Inn. *One important note: Despite the fact that the Melody Inn is located in a "rough" neighborhhod there is a very well lit parking lot across the street. At no point did I feel unsafe walking to/from my car* Overall, I had a fun experience at the Melody Inn. I don't think I would go back unless there was live music, and if there was music I would bring ear plugs to prevent permanent hearing loss. Perhaps I will check it out when the weather warms up and I can sit outside/check out the aforementioned "back" room.

The Mel has it's finger on the pulse of local music. Home of Punk Rock Night and Hillbilly Happy Hour, it's a great place to see shows, hang out with friends, and drown your sorrows. Although the live music varies and can't be pinned down to one genre, I would venture to say that this is the "home' of punk rock in Indianapolis.

I don't come here often because I'm no longer a local, but from what I know about Indianapolis, this is basically the only bar worth its booze. This is the place I count on for good music, good company, and a drink to bring it all together when I come through town. You should probably try it. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is because I'm ambivalent about the smoking policy in Indy.. I like that bar owners have the freedom to choose who to cater too, but as a non-smoker, the haziness in this place leaves my hair and clothes smelling like an ashtray or two after a night of revelry. Still, it's well worth the sacrifice.

WTF, no reviews? Get on it Indy-ites! I've been going here for many years (when I'm in town), and Punk Rock Night is the best time you're gonna have in that city on a saturday...hands down! The owners are super cool and so is the staff. Unpretentious and fun, and reasonably priced to boot!

I love The Mel. Always providing a consistent home to punk rock, metal, country, or whatever raw version of whatever you're looking for, this place does it with flavor. If you want to sit down at an engulfing booth and not be tampered with, even on a busy night, as long as you can snag one of those booths, you're really not shoulder to shoulder with anyone. If you want to stand, you can stand. There's back room to sit in with a back bar- much quieter. There's an outdoor area where you can "shoot the shit" with your buddies. Really, this place is pretty versatile. PBR tall boy? check. Jamie on the rocks? Check. Draft Newcastle, sure! Oberon? Ok. You can get whatever you want, really. Whether it's your choice of live music, drank or sitting/standing room. Sure it gets smoky, but as it's still nice outside, there's the outside area. Or the backroom if that's not smoky.

Love this place! Feels like going home each time I step in no matter how long I've been away! Fun shows and great times.

PRN alone makes the Melody Inn worth a visit, but I try to stop by anytime I'm coming from downtown, day or night. Somewhat unkept (check out look at the dust on the antlers or walls behind the bar) and could definitely be considered a dive, but who cares...the bartenders are some of the best & anyone else that walks through the door is easy to get along with. Though everyone is smoking, the smoke in the main bar amazingly isn't too bad. Two bars areas with bathrooms and a kitchen in between. The main front bar is larger and consists of the stage to the immediate left than large rounded, lower booths that fill up quickly (however they suck if you actually came there to watch a band). Down the middle are high tables starting just after the stage, than on the right (all from the perspective after walking into the mel), again starting at the end of the stage is the bar.

Eh...ehhhhh. I'm easily turned off to bars. I'm hard to please, somehow, when it comes to them. The "hotspots" tend to irk me in some inexplicable way, and The Mel is no exception. It's cool... I guess. But it just...knows it's so cool. And that bugs me. The drinks are nothing special, and frankly, to my taste? Neither is the music. It's a fun place to get drunk, show your rockabilly side, and feel awesome because you're patronizing one of Indy's 'coolest' bars. If you're into that. Yawn.

I'm a non smoker so I don't dig staying inside but the outside is fantastic in warm weather. It is like sitting outside on a friend's deck. Good atmosphere and decent drink prices. I haven't been here with they have music yet but I have heard good things so I will likely be back.

The Mel will allays be special to me. Some of the best Punk Rock I have ever seen has taken place in this meka. Tons of national punk acts travel this place that is about the size of your bedroom. No one cares though. because everyone there is there to have a good time and enjoy the tunes. The patrons are a mixed bag of awesome and I think this is essential to any bar. The drinks are cheap and so are the shows. I wish I had something funny to say. However, i dont. This place is just too good and deserves your respect.

Everybody just loooves this place. At least the local media do. It made Indy.com's "Cool List '08"; Nuvo newsweekly voted its bartenders into their recent "best of" list. I can see the allure. Want to get accosted by the resident drunk/homeless guy? Come to Melody Inn. I don't mean to misrepresent--he's not actually dangerous. I mean, he did show my boyfriend his pocket knife. But then the two played pool. If you don't like to play pool you can listen to the myriad, usually decent bands that play here, mostly local or regional acts. Listen real good, 'cause there's a cover for this place, demanded by a not-always-friendly doorman. He also looks homeless. Points, though, for the place's frequent "Banana Nights." I'm still not sure what they are outside a regular Friday or Saturday night, but they are always advertised with cool pictures of personified bananas. I was a banana for my 25th birthday. I like bananas. They also have a cool chandelier made out of sticks called The Rootlight. You can see it in spots and circles when the smoke clears periodically. Guess I'm a bit pretentious for this place.

This is the best music venue and dive bar in town. Rock, metal, punk, country are all represented on their calendar. Over the years, bands that i play in have stunk up The Historic Melody Inn's small stage many, many times, and it is safe to say it my favorite place to play anywhere. Dave, Rob and their crew always treat the bands very well. The bar service is always great. The prices are cheap and the pours are generous. There is usually a good craft beer on draft if you don't feel like a PBR which is probably the most ordered beverage here. I've also discovered how cool and low key the Mel is for an after work drink in the middle of the week. Its nice to sit in there and soak up the divey-ness while watching something random on TV without one's ears being pummeled by cranked amps. If you are a fan of live music, and you have not been here, you are missing out.

The Melody Inn is so punk rock, my appendix exploded after the first time I went there. True story!

Indy's finest and friendliest dive. I live in Chicago now, and I only wish we had a place that makes me feel as welcome as the Mel. I always try to make it to Punk Rock Night whenever I'm in town.

Love this joint. There are no pretensions here. This is your classic dive. Their "hot food" menu consists of pizza, nachos, pretzles and corn dogs. Lots of different beers. No hoity toity cocktails. The restrooms are completely graffitied and one stall doesn't really close in the womens. Tuesday the bouncer introduced himself to me and my friend and politely walked us out to our car. I just love the vibe. I'll be back.

Fun times at historic Melody Inn. It is the quintessential dive bar, and the drinks are very strong. Why only two stars then, terrible acoustics (only four speakers for the concert) terrible sound set up (the sound man is standing in the way of half of the seats), and it Indianapolis Bars still allow (if not aggressively enforcing) smoking. If that's your scene, I'm cool with that, BUT the owner wouldn't allow the group to ban smoking in the bar even though they rented out the whole bar and guests were paying admission. It seems like until Indianapolis gets the hint that there are a lot of people who appreciate smoke free venues, places like the Melody Inn will, like the lung cancer associated with it, eventually die a slow, painful death.

Yeah there bartenders are really cool. Ive only been for live music about 7 or 8 times so usually its loud and im there to get drunk but i have no idea what its like around 4 or 5 in the evening or in the afternoon. Anyways its gets my 4 stars!

I believe it's the Mel's 7th Birthday. Rob and Dave have made it the place to be, if you have to be somewhere. Smokey dive with a tiny stage and punk and rock and beer and whiskey. I've played here more times than I can count, and there's gotta be a reason for that... The answer I come up with is that the Mel is the only place that'd have me. You know what, suckers? I'm ok with that. Ha, they also do late night carry out. RIP, Jamaican beef patties.

It's been years since I've been inside the place. Here's the Friday night wrap-up: The space: Pack 'em in like sardines. By far the most crowded I've ever seen the Melody. Not for the claustrophobic, antisocial or antler haters. The drinks: Order a cocktail or a PBR -- your wallet won't feel a thing and you'll still have money to do laundry. Show the love: Stand near the stage, feel the beats, nod the head. Painful contortions in the name of dance need not apply (but there are always a few who try.) The pool shark: Best spend those quarters on PBR, son, 'cause that there is a bench covered in green felt. More seating?: Sure! There's what I call 'VIP Row', the bar and the 2 or 3 booths. All occupied by either people or coats... The math: 50% conversation, 70% music, 90% blue jeans, 30% antlers, 95% 'insiders', 100% dive The *#)%?: Hillbilly Happy Hour? Miss Kimmy & Zorba? Whatever. Just nod your head. Somebody's playing (either Pravada, Grampall Jookabox, Movie Bare, Tim Jones... or the horn from Margot & the Nuclear So and So's?) and it's gooood. Question of the night: There's another room?

Saturday night is punk rock night. I wish I could make it there more often. I found that there was a tasty Bell's Two-Hearted IPA on tap and it made me very happy. My spot at the end of the bar wasn't too smokey and I was able to enjoy to the music. Long live the Melody Inn!

Most commonly referred to as 'The Mel,' this is the ultimate punk bar. Serving up dishes of punk for many years, the Mel has been the long-standing host of Punk Rock Night (every Saturday), and has featured bands from Indy, as well as around the country. Pretty much one of the grungier spots in the city, the Mel has the perfect ingredients for a great rock n roll atmosphere. Cans of PBR at the bar. Autographed cymbals on the wall. Smoky. Diner style booths. Great bartenders (who just won Best Bartenders in the NUVO Best Of Indy 2008 Issue). There is usually live music at least 5 or 6 nights of the week and cover most nights is cheap (under $5). Drinks are also very reasonably priced (I mean, this is not a chic spot, it's raw, baby!). One of the more authentic places in Indy, which tends to be dominated by more corporate venues.

Alright! This place is pretty fantastic. I came here to see a friend's band last weekend and had a total blast. The door charge was a bit steep, but hey, musicians need to make a bit of money too, I get it! The door guy was kind enough to let us in to use the ATM and get some cash, which we spent the remainder of on some nice cold PBRs. The crowd definitely fit the bill and the sound system was more than sufficient. All in all, a great venue to listen to some punk rock and some metal and have a ball.

Perhaps my favorite venue to play @ in Indy. Yes, it's a hole in the wall... the sound fills the room... and the atmosphere is top notch. I always have a blast @ the Mel! I also must mention that the bartenders are on their shit! They come quick with the free "band beer". Stop by for an Audio Recon event, you can't lose.

Their Goth night and erotic art show Friday night was really awesome and we had a good time. The drinks were cheap and the atmosphere was really cool. I met some really awesome people at the Melody. Good hang out spot.
