Have wanted to try this place since it opened up. I drive past everyday and couldn't wait. Arrived around 6:30pm, not very busy at all. Seated right away by a very courteous staff. The food was delicious and very flavorful, the beer was ICE cold. Could not have asked for a better meal. If your looking for great German food, come try this place out!!

We arrived around 8 on a Saturday night and the parking lot was packed...good sign, right? We walked in and it was empty. Maybe the crowd was in another room but the woman that greeted us took us to a seating area with a fireplace and we were the only two in the room. So of course we order beer. The dunkle on draft (16oz) was $7.00...and I got a bottle of hackor schorr...for $7.00. Not a great start. So we start browsing the menu and the prices for the main entrees range for $14-$22 which isn't totally surprising given the expectations I had. The waitress proceeds to point out a handful of menu items that are unavailable. She cited reasons like "grisly meat" and "poor quality steak" and the cheese platter wasn't an option because they "received cubed cheese rather than slices." I've never eaten a cheese platter with factory-produced slices of "cheese". I wanted to leave at this point...but since we came here we opted for two soft pretzels. Much (not) to our surprise, they quickly came to our table (straight from a microwave most likely). The pretzels looked and tasted like the stuff from the freezer aisle. The cheese?? Was not cheese. It was the fake nacho cheese ..the kind that is created with dyed and flavorings derived from petrochemicals. The mustard was a yup vial deli style. I felt okay eating that at least. So yes I didn't order a full meal but it's safe to say that given the quality of the food served as our appetizer, the $22 for the schnitzel that I had originally wanted to spend would have been a great disappointment. The waitress was friendly. Definitely overstaffed for the lack of customers. It's no Rathskeller...a place run by people who truly know and honor German food, beer, and traditions.

We decided to try the new-ish German restaurant on the south side of Indy. I've never had German food so I wasn't sure how I would feel about it. The restaurant was warm and cozy with fireplaces in many of the rooms. I loved that since I am always cold! Our waitress, Kathy, was the sweetest. She had good tips and let us sample the beer AND soup! She was funny, attentive and speedy. Appetizer: mini Reubens were SO good. We gobbled them up in minutes. No time for a photo! Beers: great german selection. I had a wheat beer on tap that was great and my fiancé had Warsteiner Pilsner "the greatest Pilsner ever." 3 sizes to choose from. The largest size is MASSIVE. Food: We both ordered the sampler platter. The food came out VERY fast. We both ordered the rouladen. I liked it, especially the pickles. I had the kielbasa and I loved it, especially with the mustard dipping sauce! I had sides of the potato pancakes and the sauerkraut. Loved them both. This sampler platter filled us both up and we even had leftovers. Wish we had room for the dessert!! It looks awesome. I would definitely return here and I hope many others give it a try!

I have learned I am not a German food person. So this review is 4 stars because there was no wait, the waiter was awesome and I didn't think the food was horrible. I really have no background when it comes to German food but I have learned that it is a lot of fried things and meaty. Which is okay if you aren't vegetarian. I had a burger. Mainly because I could pronounce most items and I was afraid to not like things. The. Burger was beef and pork mixed. It was very soft and the perfect texture actually for a burger. My husband went full German food and got a sampler platter and I just tried his. It was ok. Some things has a powerful mustardy vinegar taste to them and other were soaked in gravy and yummy. So I say like I always say, people need to try new things! So you should try it.

This is a fairly new restaurant. It is a great German restaurant, but a bit pricey. This was my first visit with my family. We enjoyed it very much. The whole staff was very friendly, the atmosphere was nice especially with the German music playing overhead. The food was very good and filled the plate. My wife had Pork Schnitzel (Fresh Canadian Pork Loin Cutlet. Hand Cut, Hand Tenderized, Hand Breaded. Sautéed Golden.) Her two sides were German Potato Salad, and House Salad. She liked everything, but she couldn't finish it all. I had Jagerschnitzel (Chef Ron's Sautéed Pork Cutlet with Mushroom White Wine Cream Sauce.) My two sides were German Potato Salad, and Sauerkraut. I liked and enjoyed everything. I wish I could've tried their German Chocolate Cake, but they didn't have it. Since they're still new they're working out some kinks. Our waitress, Tina, was excellent! She was very nice and on top of things. She makes a very good Cherry Coke, too! Overall, we enjoyed this visit and will definitely go back again. Especially so I can try out their German Chocolate Cake.

Here I was all excited to see a new German restaurant in town, Bavarian to boot, my country of origin. Is there a word stronger than 'disappointing'? Never mind the complete chaos in the restaurant and I will say it was a busy night. However, I had reservations, still waited at least half an hour past our reserved time just to get seated. Another hours just to get some water. Let's not even discuss how long the appetizers and food took. So by the time something edible hit the table we were so starved, we would have eaten cardboard. Alas the food was NOT authentic German to start out with. The kraut was inedible by my standards. The Schnitzel was dry and overdone. The rouladen looked gray with a white sauce? Beef should not look that way... The Sauerbraten was edible, yay, but far from great. The only good things I would have to say is that the beer selection is fairly good and the krautballs are delicious, which I don't recall ever eating in my home country. A few of our American guests thought the food was good, then again they have no reference to actual German food. Those of us with any kind of German background were not impressed and would not come back here again. Completely overpriced for the quality of food and the lack of service.

Sadly, it's just not good. A (barely) renovated Steak and Ale is actually a perfect setting for a German restaurant, because of its already somewhat Bavarian decor, and the little dining rooms at this particular location are cozy and inviting, with cheerful fireplaces. A traveling accordion/guitar duo add a little campy charm to the place, and the service at the tables is fast and friendly, if not always well-informed. But the front of house staff is confused, and the food just does not deliver. The new owners kept the Steak and Ale salad bar, but it's tiny, not particularly imaginatively stocked and not worth the upcharge. The pretzels are OK, but nothing distinguished, but the cheese sauce accompanying them is a congealed mass from a jar. (The mustard is OK.) The slow-roasted pork is actually quite good, and the rouladen and red cabbage are not bad. The potato pancakes, though, are greasy and not at all crispy, and the spaetzle lacks flavor. The jagerschnitzel is a disaster: the cutlet is not evenly fried, and the thick sauce is glopped (seriously lacking in mushrooms) on top. But the very worst part of the meal? Hands down, the German potato salad, oversweet with crazily overcooked potatoes. This area could use a good local restaurant, and another German would be most welcome in this city. Sadly, this is not it.

We have tried to eat there twice. The first time we waited and waited for the server. They were not able to serve the beer my husband ordered. We also could hear the sever tell another table that they were out of several items. After ordering our beverages it was another very long wait. So, we gave up. We paid for the soft drink and then left. We just assumed that it was too close to the opening and they had some kinks to work out. Today we decided to try again. It was a tad slow getting to us but we were able to order and we did receive food. They have a salad bar. It's not really a feature that is appealing but it was included with our meal so we got the salad bar. There was barely any lettuce in the bowl and it was big pieces of low quality types of lettuce. The choices of toppings things like beets and olives (not my taste) no carrots, celery or cucumbers. Which now I realize items that require no prep, open a can and dump... Opposed to fresh items. My husband ordered Sauerbraten which he said was fine but didn't find the sauerkraut to have much flavor. I ordered the schnitzel on a pretzel bun with spatzle. The schnitzel was dripping with grease. It's like the oil in the pan was just not hot enough and it absorbed into the breading. The bun absorbed a lot of the grease too. The schnitzel was super thin and Just barely stuck out the end of the bun. It lacked flavor and the pretzel bun just over whelmed any flavor the schnitzel had. Is this schnitzel REALLY hand cut, pounded and breaded there or are they buying it that way? It seems processed not something someone is creating by hand. The spatzle was okay but was not really a fan of the glob of gravy served in the side in a small plastic cup and when I poured it, it clumped out of the container... "splat" So, we are disappointed. We seriously wanted this place to be good. We wanted to have some really wonderful, well cooked foods that we grew up on. We wanted to have a place we could take our friends from the northside that is not a food chain, but a family owned restaurant with wonderful food, but this just does not cut it at all. Oh... Finally... The entrance has the smell of sewage or dirty bathrooms. Never a good thing for any restaurant.

Great food, a bit pricey for the amount of food you get but it's delicious. Service is decidedly slow, but we were prepared for this going in and just enjoyed a relaxing dinner. The host stand needs some serious work... And the restaurant desperately needs a strong Front of House Manager. Our server was great, we ended up eating in the bar since the hosts couldn't get their act together. I loved the beer selection and found the draught beer to be very reasonably priced. We started with Kraut Balls, which were good. A little too much cream cheese for my taste, but the spicy mustard helps balance that out. I ordered the schnitzel sandwich and loved it. Whatever you do, you have to get the potato pancakes - they were the best thing on the menu. Overall we had a great dinner. We talked to our server about some of the issues, and she said the owner is aware of them and they are working on them. I'm sure they will get these kinks worked out soon and we look forward to returning for another delicious meal.

This is a new restaurant located in the former Steak and Ale in Southern Plaza. The owner/chef is Ron Roberts, formerly of Edelwess Restaurant. Chef Roberts is well known for his expertise in preparing German-Amercian cuisine. I visited twice already. Each time, I ordered different items and each time my expectations were exceeded. I ordered Rouladen, sauerkraut, potato pancakes and Braunschweiger dip as an appetizer. The meal was delicious. I normally don't care for Rouladen, but Chef Roberts has, I'm sure, created a menu favorite here. The seasonings and sauce added just the right amount of flavor and bite to this dish that certainly satisfied. I also ordered Gypsy Schnitzel (one of four schnitzels on the menu) with rosemary sauce, potato salad, and beer cheese soup. Again, each dish was perfectly prepared and were served promptly and courteously be a staff that seems to have been working together for years. It's hard to believe that they have been at it for only a week. Warsteiner Dunkel and Warsteiner Oktoberfest were on tap. Each has their own characteristics, and each served as a pleasant and accompanying refreshment to my meal. The bar staff were knowledgable and helpful. The establishment is a keeper. It relies on local products such as Claus' Meats located in Fountain Square. It is inviting and friendly. Warm, but not stuffy. Casual, but not sloppy. Chef Roberts clearly takes great pride not only in his craft, but also in seeing to it that the customer enjoys his/her dining experience. It is not uncommon to see him on the dining room floor visiting and talking with his guests. Ludwig Bavarian Haus is quickly becoming an Indianapolis destination for local dining. I expect to be a regular customer for years to come.

Eat here now! Pros: The food is great and the atmosphere is fantastic! Prior to 40 minutes ago, I did not enjoy sitting in the bar area of any restaurant. Now there is one place I will sit in the bar at. The portions were good sized and the selection of beer was very good. I highly recommend trying this place out. Cons: Was a bit pricey aside from that I love this place!

We recently dined at Ludwig on a Friday evening. The restaurant was nearly empty and we didn't have to wait. I would love if they had more beers on draft. The server informed us that they were out of half the beers on their menu, which was a disappointment. Only had three beers on tap, which is disappointing for German restaurant. We enjoyed the live music. The kraut balls were fantastic and schnitzel was nice and crispy. Sides were good. Enjoyed the gravy served on the pork. The spicy mustard was very good. The service was a little slow, but we enjoyed our server. We did witness a strange interaction between two of the servers, with one yelling at the other right in front of our table, which was quite awkward and uncomfortable. Be professional! I would give this restaurant a try if you are thinking about it. The portions are huge and you won't leave hungry. We will return.

We were willing to give this a shot even looking at the other negative remarks. So I called to make reservations and was told that they do not accept them ( even tho they advertise on their website that they do) The lady who I talked to said "Oh you wont need them" So we get there at 7pm and they were on an hour wait. The place wasn't very busy to be on an hour wait. I told the hostess ( who seemed totally clueless) that we tried to make reservations but you don't accept them. The hostess remark was " Oh, that person doesn't know what they are doing" So, I immediately think. Where's the management at. I believe there were other comments left about the same thing. So needless to say we didnt wait to eat. That owner better get his SH@t together fast. it only takes one time for people to not even give a place another chance and before he knows it, he will be out of business. I hope the owner looks at these reviews

Bavarian Haus is much improved over initial opening! We went the other night and things are running more smoothly and food was great! The server informed us they are going to be offering a buffet of German foods. I can't remember the date but will be calling for more info for when we go back. Give the place a try! You won't be disappointed.

Had a very good meal with some high school friends tonight. This was the first time I've been here since it changed names. I had the pork schnitzel with sauerkraut and German potato salad. The schnitzel was delicious--like a giant tenderloin. The service was very good also--the server was very pleasant and answered all our questions about the menu. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to all my friends and family.

Horrible horrible horrible!! Go elsewhere.. The food is terrible. Went with a large group and it was an hour before drinks came. The food was nowhere close to authentic. The sauerkraut and German potato salad were very bad and not German at all. The rouladen was grey meat and not brown as it should be. The sauerkraut balls were well liked in our group and so was the sauerbraten. The potato pancakes were also very good. The onion rings and German beers were enjoyed. The service was beyond slow and even when you ask for your check which was done incorrectly, you wait and wait. The server was rude and unable to handle serving a group. The food came up at all different times.

We went late on a Saturday evening for drinks and appetizers and it was a great cozy spot. The owners came out to greet us and the bartender was amazing letting us try several samples of great german beer. Appetizers were delicious! Husband loved the german decor. We will definitely be back

Our party of 14 visited the Ludwig today for lunch. It was quite tasty and, perhaps only second most important to taste, there was a selection of gluten-free offerings! We ordered several things including the Bavarian Pretzels, Mini Reubens, Braunschweiger Dip, Kraut Balls, Roasted Pork, Smoked Pork Chop, Reuben, Cordon Bleu Schnitzel, and Frickadellan, several things from the children's menu, and a variety of sides including sautéed mushrooms, mashed potatoes, spaetzel, and green beans. The hostess greeted us promptly and inquired on our needs for our small children. (We appreciated that!) We enjoyed our cozy room with a lit fireplace and inviting atmosphere. Our server was very attentive and joyful. Chef Tim joined us at the table more than twice to answer our questions regarding gluten-free offerings. We are grateful for new gluten-free dining out options! (In the event you're interested, dairy-free offerings are also available!) Overall, we very much enjoyed our experience at the family-owned Ludwig Bavarian Haus! We like to support locally owned businesses and we'll be visiting again!

LOVE this place! I'm so glad they found something as wonderful as Ludwig's to fill the empty space it's been since the Polo Club. My husband, sister in law and brother in law went on opening weekend and they rocked! Usually on an opening weekend you're just walking yourself in to a disaster but they truly held it together and provided us with excellent service. We all really enjoyed our meals. I had the Jagerschnitzel and will be going back soon for more! Prost to Ludwig!

It was funny to watch the staff rapidly disperse from around the hostess stand when we arrived shortly before 6pm on a cold November Thursday. Our server was not initially attentive, but improved significantly during the meal service. As an appetizer, I ordered the Soft Pretzels, which were served soft & warm with cheese sauce and mustard. They were the perfect complement to the small but well-thought-out salad bar. My Portobello Schnitzel looked a bit lonely on the plate with no sides, but was quite tasty. Mom's Pork Schnitzel looked good and she said it was, although she would have preferred it slightly more brown. Apparently the stewed apples are very good also. Others in our party also enjoyed their meals, including the Rueben sandwich. Unfortunately, we had no room for dessert. The chef/owner came to our table both before and after the meal for a bit of friendly small talk. I'll be back...and I'll bring real Germans!

Just had dinner and drinks, and would go back again. The bar area is a little strange, I think if the raised the music a little and gave the bar a Biergarten feel it would be a better place to go.

Enjoyed lunch on Saturday. The staff wore black on black and looked professional. We were greeted promptly and our waitress was attentive, describing the menu. The salad bar was simple but I made a salad that tasted very good. I ordered sauerbraten and kraut. The food was served quickly. They said the kraut was homemade and it had a mild flavor, much less sour than grocery store kraut. The sauerbraten was a large serving. My wife had a burger of sorts which she enjoyed. Her stewed apples were delicious. The draft warstein (sp?) Dunkel was a good dark beer. We really liked the bread pudding. There was a family group of 12 next to us and they were getting good service. The restaurant had the feel of a family venture. I wish them well and I will recommend it.

Great service. Our waitress was very attentive. One of the dishes we had was the Claus sausage sampler with braised red cabbage and sauerkraut. The red cabbage dish was excellent and we loved the sauerkraut. My hubby who is PA Dutch said it was the best sauerkraut he has ever had.

Great waiter, loooong wait for food, my frickedellan was burnt around the edges, the middle was a bit pink for my linking, my husband didn't care for the sauerkraut... I think we'll stick to the Rathskeller.

Food is okay but not great. It is also pretty expensive for the buffet. The authentic music and food is fun. Very dark inside. Utensils like plates and forks weren't very clean.

Service is a little to be desired at this restaurant. Hopefully this will work itself out once they have been open for a little. When we were sat it took the waitress 15 minutes to respond to us and take our drink order only to inform us that they didn't have anything on tap ( as they were out) and didn't have very much in stock of the menued import beers. When we ordered, I ordered the combination sausages (one of which they were out of so it made the choice easy), however the waitress didn't know which one was which and didn't bother asking once I asked. The food my wife and I ordered was pretty good. The food is pretty pricey here averaging a price between 15 and 18 dollars however the quality of the service and food really should only result in a price of about 10-12 a plate, but this is my opinion. Based on price and quality I don't for my look for this restaurant to be open very long...
