Man, it's Kountry Kitchen! With a K! C'mon, Yelp! I'm not going back to this restaurant. I know lots of people love it, but I don't. Kountry Kitchen is in a rough part of town. I went there for a Saturday brunch around 11:00 a.m. I parked my car in their parking lot and was immediately asked for money by a woman on drugs. I said no and high stepped it into the restaurant. The place was packed. It took about 15 minutes before a server came to my table. When the server did greet me, she was nice, but the service was WAY too slow. It took forever to get my food and refills on my drink. Unacceptable. I ordered two cube steaks with gravy that comes with two sides: eggs, fried potatoes, rice or grits and your choice of toast or a biscuit for $8.75. Kountry Kitchen's prices are good, but their food isn't good. They're resourceful. They take cheap food and make it taste better than it should be. There are better soul food restaurants in Indy.

We often go to Kountrey Kitchen after church on Sunday. It's usually crowded, but unless we have a large party (6 or more), the wait isn't too bad. I love their neckbones and order them with a side of white beans, collard greens and baked cornbread. The neck bones are very flavorful, with just the right amount of seasoning. White beans are delicious and not too soupy. Ordered a side of sliced tomatoes and onion for the collards. I will admit the collards were a bit bitter for my taste, but still had a good flavor. The baked cornbread was good......crumbled it into my white beans with the onion......very good. The lemonade is an addiction because it is soooooo good. I have also had the Catfish, which was perfectly seasoned; the chicken wings which I have them fry hard. I do not like the mac and cheese or the mashed potatoes. The other not - so - good menu item...the fried pork chops. They are much too thin and sometimes fried too hard. Cabbage and fried corn ..2 thumbs up..mixed greens are good....my son loves the cubed steaks, rice and gravy. All in all....a good place to eat if you are looking for soulfood.

Poor service, the tea is entirely too sweet (diabetic comatose sweetness) and the experience did not meet my expectations. I ordered the baked chicken, dressing (which is an additional dollar) candied yams and Mac n Cheese. It was just okay, nothing spectacular!

This here is food coma food, the kind that makes you so sleepy after that you need to lie down after and just be. I've come for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and it's like comfort food at its finest whenever you're there. I agree with everyone about the lemonade- my grandma turned me on to it years ago and mixed with the ice tea, puts me into a fork in left hand, drink in right girl. You have your hot water cornbread, your green, yams, mac and cheese, chicken, ribs, pork chops- standard soul food fare but done perfectly. I don't always like the service, because it varies wildly, but man do l love the food.

I'm gonna be straight to the point....it isn't what it used to be. A lot of the food is either bland or dry. Where's the flavor? The juiciness of the meatloaf, the oozing Mac and Cheese, not something that I could probably make from a Kraft microwave box at home? There has also been a lack of cleanliness at my last visit. It was during the Classic weekend and I usually have family and friends visiting from Ohio and Michigan. They too have noticed the change. No one is friendly to us. The waiting staff looked disgusted because we had a large party. We stared at a table from a previous party that had dined there and we could see the remnants of their food, which is pretty disgusting. There's really not a clear sign to point where the restroom are located. Although the lady that served us was really nice to us, it took FOREVER to get refills on our drinks. A REFILL FOR A GLASS OF WATER, SERIOUSLY??? The plus side that I do like is that they give back to the less fortunate on Christmas. People without a nice Christmas feast can stop by and not have to pay for anything. I also like to see the latest celebrities that have visited. And by celebrities, I don't mean the local news and radio personalities. I mean like national and international stars. My most memorable moment was when President Obama ate there and talked with my aunt and me. At least I'll have the memories.

Our 1st time in. Shady area, on the way out we saw that there was someones shattered auto glass in the pebbles of the parking lot. Signed in on yelp. Password; KountryKitchen. Checked in. Yelp Deal appears **10% off of ANY MEAL*** Handed the illuminated deal on the phone screen to the cashier, she personally checked it used and told me thank you for your business. walked back to the counter to pick up unsavory sides and bland lumpy mashed potatoes with meatloaf dinner came. The offer was NIXED by a senior staff member, citing that the total had to be $25. our meal came to $23.98. Our YELP offer has already been marked as used. This didn't seem to be the side of town on the type of crowd to have a disagreement with. We left ASAP. Shameful business practice, abysmal "soulfood" This is the place for northern southern food.

DELICIOUS FOOD We came during a rainstorm where the water came up to our ankles and it was STILL worth it. Mac'N'cheese was rich, creamy and delicious. The sweet lemonade was like CRACK. So delicious, with pure cane sugar! The meatloaf was well cooked and very flavourful. The smothered pork was tender and very delicious and satisfying. The fried corn was great and good texture too. Only thing is the chicken was a little bit under-seasoned but still fried just right. All in all some really good food!

I'm giving it 3 stars on the food I ordered. I'd give it more had I ordered what my dining mates ordered. The meatloaf - a ketchupy mess! My advice is to stay away from it unless you like eating plain ketchup. The smothered pork chop - while tasty with the gravy, I felt it was a little tough. The macaroni & cheese and green beans - the flavor was alright, but honestly I enjoy these items at the hospital cafeteria I work at more than here. The fried catfish the other people at my table had, however, was delicious. Perfectly breaded. Perfectly salty. I'd return and order only that. Barack Obama may have eaten here, but I'm sure he's eaten at McDonalds, too.

One afternoon a few years ago (before our move out East, and our eventual move back to Indy), my husband and I were driving around looking at houses in the Fall Creek area. On our way back downtown, we passed the Kountry Kitchen. I made some comment about how scary it looked, and speculated on whether or not it was even open still. Fast forward 3+ years, my husband and I (along with our two best friends) get gussied up and head to the Kountry Kitchen for an early dinner. (Because unfortunately... They close at 7 p.m.) Arriving there, we were told to sit wherever we wanted... We settled in at a large table in one of several dining room areas. The place is absolutely huge-- much bigger than you would assume looking at it from outside. The interior is definitely not anything to write home about, but it was cozy feeling, despite the size. Our waitress came and took our drink orders. We all ordered their lemonade or sweet tea, or a combination of the two. They were served in funky jar glasses, and tasted homemade. Very awesome! We looked over the menu and I think we all had a hard time deciding exactly what we wanted to get. There were a lot of awesome choices. Ultimately I selected the "pick two" which allowed me to get a smothered pork chop and a piece of meatloaf. I also got two sides. I selected collard greens and macaroni and cheese. I also got a piece of fried corn bread. Let me just say all the food was awesome. Not only is the food a great value for the price, but it reminds you of your grandma's home cooking. It's so tasty and filling. The only problem we has was that after we ate, we all basically wanted to take naps! (I also wish we'd saved room for dessert!) The service was awesome and everyone was incredibly gracious. They asked us how we heard about them, and of course I mentioned that I'd seen reviews on Yelp! :) I would definitely love heading back to Kountry Kitchen again! This time, however, I'm totally going to get dessert! :)

Best soul food I've found in Indianapolis. I love to be able to go here. Before I tried it, I thought by the appearance that the food wouldn't be good, I sure was wrong. Get past the look of the restaurant, its not the a traditional layout, but sit down and enjoy the best soul food (my favorite being the pork chops) in Indianapolis. I have had a share of soul food from all over the country so I know what I'm talking about. Go check out Kountry Kitchen, you will not be disappointed

I hit Kountry Kitchen up on my way back home from Chi-town. Don't let the outside decor fool you, the place is bigger on the inside. My waitress was on point from the beginning. I had the Talipia, greens, fresh corn, and the pancake corn bread (Ole School). I was worried if I was gonna get full; the portions were more than expected and it was good! You have to try the Half and Half Kool-Aid.... Although, I didn't know it wasn't free refills, it was overall a good southern experience at the Kountry Kitchen.

Stopped by for a Saturday lunch and it was packed and a good hour or so after the lunch hour. Yes the physical appearance is not much, but I don't eat appearance. The food was incredible. Had the meat loaf dinner with 2 sides and OMG some of the best lima beans I have ever eaten. The food was plentaful and had incredbile taste. My sister couldn't finish all hers and took some home. The cobbler was wonderful and the place is a great meal location. Ignore the location and building and remember it's the food that matters and the owners are great people who also do great things for the community.

Amazing Soulfood. I've enjoyed nearly everything on the menu. The catfish is fantastic. The porkchops are wonderful. You can't go wrong with the chicken wings. All the breakfast food is great. I would have to agree with the previous reviewer that the rib tips and the tea are a little too sweet for my taste, but everything else is phenomenal. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive. The portions are more than enough. I can't recommend this place enough!

Take a look at Country Kitchen's "wall-of-fame" it's easy to see virtually every notable sports or Hollywood luminary to come through Indianapolis - including US Presidents - have stopped by the Kitchen for their peach cobbler or a salmon patty. But my visit here recently helped me to realize it's the locals who've kept the place sizzling since it opened in 1988. I recognized plenty of fried stuff on their menu; THAT'S GOOD. But what in the Wide World of Vegetables is OKRA? The only way to eat what must be an acronym is with salt and tabasco sauce right? But my friendly server Nikea, who's as nice as your favorite sister-in-law, did more than hold my hand. She pretty much ordered for me. Kountry Kitchen serves neck bones that to the UN-initiated taste like the best ribs you've never had. "Do you like fried chicken, and gravy? Or ribs?" she asked. "Yes," I said, "Let's get that!" "Oh, I'm gonna bring something you haven't had before, but now I know what to surprise you with," And off Nikea went! I trusted her and my voluminous - um - taste palette. She returned with neckbones smothered in gravy with turnip greens, and a sweet mac-n-cheese. She even threw in a chicken wing in an unusual but super-savory fried recipe. Everything was delicious and served with a side-dish of warm hospitality from co-owner Cynthia Wilson who they call "Ms. Cynthia." While the Country Kitchen is an Indianapolis institution that's risen above its neighborhood fence-line, what actually qualifies its menu as "soul" or "southern?" As the owners explain, their food and long-time recipes are what they are: "good for the soul."

I went here with a friend and have been back multiple times. Admittedly, I haven't strayed from the meatloaf...I loved it so much the first time, it's what I always get when I go back. I've tasted the other menu items from what my friends have ordered and all was well with their meals as well. It's food like your grandma would make (assuming she makes delicious heavy home-cooked meals). You'd never know the restaurant existed if you were just driving down the road. It's in what appears to be a run-down nearly abandoned building that would likely be torn down should someone purchase it to rehab. Their are various signs all about, some of which are for sale signs for the building. Parking is wherever you can find a spot on the street or the gravel lot surrounding the building. Walking through the door at first might be a bit confusing because you're not sure if you're in the right spot but don't worry-you are-and it will be good.

I've been here once for breakfast and once for dinner, but some of my friends have been way more than that! We always go in a big group and the staff is always big-hearted and accommodating. I had the baked chicken, mustard greens, Mac and cheese, and corn bread. All of it is delicious! I love that the beverages are served in mason jars and that hot sauce is always brought to the table.

We were there on Wednesday and had the best meal we had while in Indy. All the food is homemade and it shows in the quality and taste. The banana pudding is to die for and the peach cobbler was like my grandmother's. Whitney was our server and was the best server we ran into while out in Indy. If you like home cooked soul food this is the place to go.

Simply delicious and the best soul food in town!! I had fried chicken with was crispy and flaky on the outside and moist and well seasoned on the inside. The greens and Mac and cheese were so good I never thought I would like greens. The corn bread was excellent and the half and half was to die for! The outside isn't great looking and the area is a little scary looking. But once you walk in and are greeted by the friendly staff you forget you're on the wrongs side of town. The service is terrific and the menu has a ton of choices, I'm think bill have to go more often so I can yet them all :) I favorite place to go for soul food and half and half

This place is the BOMB! Don't let the neighborhood or the exterior fool you! Just a few blocks from my house, this place is a hidden gem! I started going here a couple of years ago and go back frequently. I am not trying to suggest that you only go on the weekends, but it is a perfect weekend breakfast/lunch/brunch destination for dine-in or carryout. Just go with patience in mind. This place is super busy on the weekends. Yet, it is so worth the wait! Half of the restaurant is for dining in with a separate side for carryout. The carryout side is packed like sardines on the weekends. Expect a 20-40 minute wait. Service is outstanding. The staff is overly friendly as are the guests. If you like Soulfood and comfort food, you will love this place! Among my faves: Collared greens, grits, fried catfish, meatloaf, smothered pork chops, smothered chop steak, mac-n-cheese, lima beans, chicken wings, fried corn, fried cornbread, fried okra - ALL are OUTSTANDING! My least favorites: dressing and cabbage (but only because I don't like green peppers in my cabbage). Give this place a chance. You are certain to love it and I hope you go back. I know I will. Today was my second Sunday there in a row! FYI....If you call for carryout and get placed on hold for a really long time, take this as a good sign. High demand!

I can't believe people think this food is good. I just moved to Indy 3 months ago from Detroit and I have tried several Soul food places here and Simply Southern, is by far the best. When I ate at kountry kitchen, I had meatloaf, dressing and yams. First, the meatloaf was mushy and tasted like doughy bread like they put too much bread or bread crumbs in it. The yams was not sweet and it tasted like it came straight out the can! The dressing tasted like Sage and gooey bread. I can't believe all those celebrities really liked their food! For a good meal, with alot of portions, go to Simply Southern on E 38th St near Keystone.130789601

Amazing soulfood. Fried chicken mac and cheese and the yams were awesome. They have fresh squeezed lemonaid that is incredible. The cornbread is unreal, delicious. This really is a hole in the wall restaurant but its awesome. Worth a visit!

Say what you want about the appearance from the outside but this place is absolutely 5-Star. Why? I've spent more money in expensive restaurants and rarely receive the kind of attention and service I got here! The food was absolutely delicious! You should ask for Jasmine;) I will return again someday when I make it back to Indianapolis! Cheers!

Honestly, the place isn't much more attractive inside than it is outside (step way up to enter the men's restroom!), but the service is friendly and attentive, and the food is delicious. Great mustard green, fried chicken wings, fried catfish, smothered pork chops, cabbage -- the macaroni and cheese was just OK, but with macaroni and cheese, just OK is OK with me! The desserts looked excellent.

After reading the reviews, I must have went on an off day....our group ordered Meatloaf & Pork chop meal w/sides and then the fried chicken meal w/sides, peach cobbler, & lemonade. I believe the meatloaf shouldn't be on the menu as it was dry, rubbery, and smothered in ketchup. The pork chop was the same without the ketchup of course. The fried chicken was nicely fried but lacked flavor. The peach cobbler was very sweet and full of pastry dough thru out. The lemonade sweet, but very good. Everyone I talked to raves about this place and their catfish, maybe I should have ordered that. I was very surprised with all the celebrity attention this place gets, it looks like a true hole in the wall. Please remodel...it can be modest but bright....it was dark and tacky. The two stars given are for the nice staff that was welcoming and eager to serve, but the owners need to step up the quality of ALL items on the menu and invest in updating the restaurant.

Why HAVE YOU NOT been here yet??!!?? Obama ate to Country Kitchen. Drugy ate Country Kitchen! You should too! (look for their pics on the walls!) I know it as Country Kitchen Soulfood, so that is the name it is going to get today. As a resident of Indy 3 years, I would always have dates here....forget RedLoster cheese biscuits! I want some soulfood with the lemonade on the side! So let's talk about some featured items, shall we? Lemonade: The way me and my sister explain it is- "You know that lemonade your grandma with real lemons juice and slices, real cane sugar and ice so cold it makes the cup fog? You know, the kind she would put in the jelly jars to serve you? YOU KNOW, the kind you had to cool off a summer day on the porch? That's Country Kitchen Soulfood lemonade. Don't get anything else! No soda/pop (whatever you want to call it)! No water! Lemonade. Yams: The best around. The real thing! Ribs: My fave. The fall of the bone and the homemade sauce hit the spot. Cornbread: yummy, buttery, and oh so light! Greens, dressing, chicken, and the peach cobber: Yes, Lord! Try to beat the crowds on Sunday. They open the whole place up for Sunday afternoons. They close about 6 or 7pm each day, so be mindful you need to get there early. Parking is on the street; red corner store on the left hand side. Country Kitchen Soulfood is the best soulfood you are going to get in Indy that is rooted in the southern cooking styles of the past. Don't let anyone tell you anything different. Prices are good and about $15 will get you full. They sell breakfast, but I have never been there for it. Most of all, please support our Indy black businesses! They are few and between, so make sure to visit! Why haven't you already?

This place is "Off Tha Chain!" The food is EXCELLENT! Doesn't look like much from the outside, actually looks like a dive from the outside. But much more of an ambiance once you walk inside. The food here great. Service is fast and very friendly. One of the best soul food experiences during my travels, for any city.

I commend anyone who is able to take a picture of their food - I didn't. That is how GOOD the food was at this restaurant. We had a Sunday breakfast at Kountry Kitchen. plate #1: scrambled eggs with cheese, pancakes, bacon and grits. Plate #2: omelet with grits, sausage and toast. Plate #1 was mines...OMG... everything was EXCELLENT...I went to this state because it has my name in it and this state, the people and THIS restaurant exceeded my expectation. (*Plus Five stars)

This place was just like home! 6 of us went on Friday evening of Circle City Classic weekend. we were seated immediately. our table was greeted immediately. we ordered: smothered pork chops, fried whiting, and wings, neckbones. Every bite was awesome! the sides were good. the lemonade is addicting! a few of us even had some leftover for a late nite snack. the chess pie was just like remembered when i was a kid. the food is great! the waitresses are very attentive. i plan to swing thru here every time i come home to visit. i grew up in the Indy area but never heard of this place until recently. they were ranked the #2 soulfood place in indy for 2014, but i think they should be #1!!!

My friend adores this place so she brought me this weekend. I had the meatloaf, both baked and fried cornbread, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, fried corn. The meatloaf had a weird flavor. The corn was too sweet. The mashed potatoes had no flavor. The mac and cheese was definitely Kraft mac and cheese which made me really sad. Cornbread was great, it was Jiffy! And finally the food wasn't even hot. I LOVE a good hole in the wall and I am all about yummy homestyle comfort foods, but not getting any of that here. Food: 2/5 Service: 4/5 our server was very sweet, even though they were busy Location: 2/5

I loved this place. First of all, I love the location. 19th and College Ave. is such a quiet location, and there is plenty of parking. The outside might look a little lost and you might not know where to go in, but just enter in the corner of the building, and you've hit the motherload. I walked in, and I was greeted with sweet, smiling faces and was told to seat myself wherever I preferred (which I'd rather do than wait for someone to seat me where I don't really wanna sit). I ordered iced tea, which all drinks are served in glass mason jars--really felt like such a southern comfort to me. I ordered the catfish and 2 jumbo chicken wings combo, with a side of fried corn and mac & cheese. HOLY CANOLI. The catfish was so crunchy and well seasoned. I just love an awesomely fried piece of catfish. The chicken wings were crispy and tender. I was raised in Indiana--who doesn't love corn, let alone FRIED corn? It was so creamy and tasty. The mac & cheese was so delicious and flavorful. The service was pure southern hospitality at its best, the food was more comforting than anyone can put a dollar sign on, and honestly, I appreciate when places just feel like home. I know I talk a lot about love, but that's exactly what I ate here at Kountry Kitchen--love on a plate.

My buddy and I came here on Thursday night (2/3/12) after the Pepsi fan jam. I follow Peter King on twitter and he recommended this restaurant as the best place to get soul food. Upon his recommendation we ate here. The parking lot is behind the restaurant and is gravel, and while some people say the area is shady it didn't seem like it to me. As soon as we entered we were greeted by two women working the front and told to seat ourselves. The decor leaves something to be desired, but the photos of the crew with famous people is nice. While there we ran into Jimmy Fallon and he was gracious and took a photo and we also met some colts players. Onto the food; we were greeted by our server JoJo and she was wonderful. I already had my mind made up I was ordering the famous fried catfish while my friend was debating between pork chop smothered or fried. JoJo said we should try the pork neck bones and brought out a sample and my friend ordered those. For the sides he ordered the fried corn and mac and cheese and I had collard greens and black eye peas. The catfish was perfectly breaded with corn meal and salted, it was moist and full of flavor I didn't need any tartar sauce or anything for it. The collard greens were also good after adding some hot sauce, I would have liked a smoky flavor to them, but that's my preference. My friends neck bones were amazing, and I am a huge fan now of them. They were perfectly braised with the right amount of seasoning add hot sauce and perfection. The fried corn was more like creamed corn and was good, the mac and cheese was also good, but not the best. My friend ordered the peach cobbler and it was really good, the cobbler is served in a saucer cup and the cobbler has pastry dough throughout. I think it needs a crumble on top. It was a little to sweet, but not unbearable. After we got to the register we were talking with the manager and staff and they showed us the pictures and spent about 15 minutes talking to us about the restaurant and such. They were so nice and even gave us a hug when we left. This restaurant is on my must stop if I am driving to Indy or through. Great Job Ladies!!!!!!!!! I would def stop in this restaurant for breakfast if in Indy, as the breakfast menu sounded delicious. My meal of catfish was -$10.50 and my friends of neck bones with lemonade and cobbler was $16.45.

I finally got around to trying this place... Food honestly was good... But I think it was a bit tooooo salty. Catfish was amazing, again too salty!! My favorite has to be the Mac and cheese.. Yummy cornbread! Sweet tar sure was sweet, maybe too sweet for my liking. Peach cobbler was not what I expected. The consistency was very thin and watery... And oh my was it sweet... Customer service though... I must say they were very nice pleasant people!!

Visited Kountry Kitchen for the first time on Saturday, January 17, 2015. A friend I was meeting who is from Fort Wayne recommended we have lunch there. When we arrived, the place was relatively busy for a Saturday afternoon. We were directed to seat ourselves, and did not wait long for our hostess to attend to us. I ordered the Combo meal ( two meats plus sides) with meat loaf and chicken wings, dressing and collard greens; my friend ordered the catfish. All I can say is Wow! The food was excellent, and believe me, I'm not that easy to please. It wasn't overcooked (especially the greens), nor was it oversalted as a lot of soul food tends to be. Everything was VERY good. So good in fact, I convinced my friend to come back again Sunday after church to eat another meal before we left town. But that's not even the best part...The service we received was PERFECT...second to none. Nikki was our waitress on our first visit, and she came back to check on us on our visit the next day, even though we had a different waitress that day. She made us feel as if we were her personal guests for whom she was responsible, and she invited us to come back, which we did! I live in Kentucky, but you better believe the next time I'm in Indy, I'll be back to Kountry Kitchen. And I've already told a family member who lives in Tennessee to stop by when they visit Indianapolis soon. These guys are simply fabulous!!!

We had fantastic service at Kountry Kitchen on Nee Year's Day. We showed up with a large group and gave them almost no notice (bad on us). They already had a table set up for us when we arrived. Our waitress was wonderful and handled all of our weird questions professionally. Everyone was pleased with their food. I tried the yams today and they were really yummy. Overall the experience exceeded our expectations. Happy New Year!

Great soul food here. Was on my way to the Monon for a bike ride and stopped here for breakfast. Bacon, 2 eggs, potatoes and a biscuit for $6.99. Not a bad price. Food was excellent. Service was good. They have been in town for 25 years, many pictures of famous people who stopped in for a meal are hanging on the walls. Kid friendly too.

Cute place. Great menu. Service was very friendly and prompt. Looking forward to going back. Had fried corn bread and strawberry cake. Yum!

My first time here I came in for breakfast on a recommendation. "Best biscuits and gravy in town," they said. Pardon me while I disagree. First of all, I wasn't expecting great ambience. So I won't go any further about that. Just take a look at my pic. But back to the B&G, the biscuit was actually good. But the gravy had a greasy, bitter aftertaste that was off-putting. I've had far better gravy at Steak n Shake. But the real kicker were the eggs. I like my eggs basted. So that's what I ordered. The waitress, who was friendly, asked me, "What's that?" Really? A soul food diner server doesn't know what a basted egg is? I proceeded to tell her it was like sunny side up, but add a tad of water and cover it to steam it. She said,"Like a po.., uh..." I finished her sentence since she was struggling, "poached." I said kind of like that but fried. When I got my eggs they were poached. And not very done. They had gooey white goop on them. I also ordered a salmon patty, which was overcooked. And it was on the same plate as the poached eggs which still had some of the poaching water on it so the party was a bit soggy on one side. I also ordered a cup of decaf, which she said she had to start a new batch. But I didn't get it until 5 minutes after my food had arrived. And the creamer was that powdered junk. The coffee was overly strong for me. They may do a great job with supper, but I will not go back there for breakfast. ADDENDUM: Ok, I like to give places second chances. Since most of the reviews for this place are positive and mostly pertain to dinner, I though I'd go back and try their dinner menu. I'm glad I did. It allowed me to raise the ranking from 2 stars to 4 stars. I ordered a combo plate with meatloaf and fried catfish. My sides were mashed potatoes with brown gravy and cabbage, with a portion of fried cornbread. It was all delicious. I would have added some sugar to the cornbread batter but that's the only thing I would change. I had banana pudding for dessert. It was very rich and sweet, but I wish the vanilla wafers had been cooked in instead of placed around the top as a garnish. But it was quite tasty. I will go back again - at least for dinner.

I love this down home Southern cooking! I've been to "The Florida Avenue Grill" in DC... It's great... But doesn't hold a candle to this! I've eaten "Soul Food" and great Southern cooking my entire life... and I've never been to a restaurant that does as good a job as the Kountry Kitchen. We planned daily visits to recommended and highly reviewed foody spots for our Trip to the 2015 Indy 500. Thursday night of race week was when we hit the Kountry Kitchen. Never having been there before I asked our excellent waitress what was her favorite... and she said the "Greg's Finger Lick-en Neck Bones" were her absolute favorite. So no having had Neck Bones before... not even being sure what "Neck" they were from... I took a chance. Asked for Collard Greens, Cabbage and Fried Cornbread. I asked for some cider vinegar for my greens.. and when she brought the Neck Bones she said I had to try the Vinegar based Hot Sauce... and she was right! It was simply a spectacular meal... and I hurt myself overeating. The Sweet Tea and Lemonade mixed was a great treat too. We are ourselves silly for 8 days on this Indy Trip... and the Kountry Kitchen was by far the best meal we had. Can't wait to go back some day.

Kountry Kitchen, walked in, felt like i'd went back in time & certainly 1000s of miles south (their motto is A Southern Touch in Indy) we had a choice of seating in several rooms, this place is bigger than it looks! our server Tasha was so nice & helpful! the Sweet Tea delivered was the BEST i've ever tasted, it took me back to sweet childhood memories of family reunions! my hands shook as i read the menu, i wanted everything, but i had be craving Fried Chicken, so i got that & Collard Greens, another craving Lima beans, & FRIED Cornbread, & NECK BONES (plus i took some of those home!) i did have a taste of my friend's Smothered Pork Chops & the fresh Mac n Cheese EVERYTHING was delicious!!!!!!!!!!!! our Carmel Cake was TO DIE FOR, a crisp Carmel Crust on the edge Yes they do take Credit Cards also open 7AM-7PM

I've been twice and I LOVE the food! The smothered pork chops are so tender and the gravy is divine. The cabbage is excellent as well as many other sides. Macaroni and cheese is my favorite food, but I wasn't crazy about theirs. The service leaves much to be desired, but clearly, I'd go again and again.

By far one of the best soul food restaurants in Indy :-)))

  • Ethan H.

Okay, almost every respect. On further reflection, the rib tips are overly sweet, as is the sweet tea. I also wasn't fond of the black-eyed peas. But the meatloaf, the greens and the mac-n-cheese are some of the best I've had. And the ambiance is still just about as cool as it gets.

This place is so hole in the wall its not even funny!!! Its probably where the term comes from. This place was great. I hear its famous for their fish, but I got BBQ instead. Great sauce not watered down at all like some places. Also excellent portions for the price. The place isn't good enough to be a land mark. I did hear that Obama ate here when he was in town and loved it. But as for me Im definitely coming back, Im just not in a hurry. BIG THING FOR ME WAS THAT THEY HONORED THEIR COUPON FOR CHECKING IN ON YELP!! So many places play that off now a days saying they dont know what that is.

Ordered breakfast for delivery from Kountry Kitchen for the first time this morning. The biscuits and gravy were excellent with large chunks of real fried sausage and real home-made white gravy (not from a mix, which I hate) over home-made biscuits. The "fried" potatoes were a disgusting mess. They were not fresh fried potatoes. These potatoes had been previously cooked. I would guess they had been boiled the day before, then sliced up and cooked with some onions (also previously boiled) in some grease, that was not hot enough in which to fry. The potatoes were inedible. Our dog would not even eat the potatoes, and she normally eats anything. What a disappointment and they should be ashamed that they even served these potatoes. We are frequent customers of the Kountry Kitchen but normally order dinner. Their food is usually delicious. We expected the fried potatoes to be made from freshly cut up potatoes that had been crispy fried in a hot skillet, not a mushy pile of gruel.

Looking for the best comfort soul food in Indy? Kountry kitchen is the place for sure! It's like having a homecooked meal without having to destroy the kitchen to do so. Very friendly service. Highly recommend the meatloaf, white beans, and newly discovered love of collard greens. If you are going to eat at KK leave any hopes of eating low cal/lowfat/low carb bc this is a place you absolutely want to splurge, don't cheat your soul (and taste buds!) from what they crave! Breakfast, lunch, and dinner options!

This is literally the best soul food ever. It's so delicious. I actually couldn't believe how good it was. The was perfect, and the catfish was to die for. I'm definitely eating here next time I'm in Indy. Trust me, you will not be dissapointed

I'll admit, the recommendation by a friend + wall of fame + "soul food" motto made me seek out the Country Kitchen when I was driving to Indianapolis. Parking was a bit confusing (gravel lot in back said you'd be towed), but if you just get a spot along College Avenue, you'll be fine. The outside of the building looks run down, signs are mismatched, and the inside isn't much higher quality. A visit to the bathroom in the back required a step up to the men's and could use some serious TLC. Let's just say this is not a good place if you gotta sit down. I was prepared for all this and knew the venue wasn't what I was coming for. The menu was simple and I'd already previewed it on the web before my arrival. As many have mentioned, there are no free refills on drinks; I stuck with ice water. In an attempt to get a sample of everything, I ended up ordering way too much food: an order of wings (4), rib tips, collards, fries, and fried corn bread (a.k.a., cornbread pancakes). The collards had bits of bone in it and were completely bland and the fried cornbread was forgettable. The rib tips were served in a bowl of BBQ sauce, but tasted good (no BBQ smoke flavor or crispy bits) and the fries were solid. The wings came with all three components connected and were lightly breaded and fried. They were delicious and a meal unto themselves! The hot sauce is the kind that makes your tongue go numb so it kinda dulled the rest of my dining experience. The whole meal cost me $21 without tip, so value of food for the price is a thumbs up! To be completely honest, the food was good. Nothing mind blowing or above par that'd make me want to come back here again, but I'm happy I went and experienced the place and the food. The area directly around the Kountry Kitchen is a bit shady and not a place I'd visit during the evening, but I never felt unsafe or bothered on my venture.

HORRIBLE service! The most in organized restaurant I have ever been to in my life. I'm from out of town and I was told to come here bc the food was good, but I stood in the front of the restaurant for 15min and was never greeted. There was a lady walking around with a "clip board" and I was told that's who I'm supposed to tell I wanted to be seated, and when I chased her down she said "I'll be up to the front in a minute" and of course she never came. Who does that? Sad experience. Smh

    (1)
  • Kendra S.

Dang, what a sad letdown. The food was barely "okay"... Over cooked okra, dry fish and Mac and cheese. I expected more flavor. The gravy was the best part. The service was so friendly tho, some of the best in the city. So disappointed in the food, really wanted to like this place.

I've driven by this place for the last 15+ years and have never even considered stopping until a friend mentioned how tasty it was. Yelp seemed to support the claims of delicious-ness, so I called up my friend and away we went for some authentic southern-style cooking. I started out with the lemonade (caution: no free refills here, but the glass jars are plenty big as long as you don't go slurping away!) Delicious, although it was so warm that most of the ice melted before it made its way to the table. All of the other reviews are right: this stuff is addictive and hits the spot. Dinner: I went for the combo plate, which was two meats and two sides with bread. Seeing how this was a southern place, I had to go for the catfish and collard greens. I was hoping they would have fried okra on the menu, but I didn't see it listed. Instead, I opt'd for the mac and cheese as my second side along with the meatloaf. Meatloaf: some of the reviews said it had a funny taste. To me, it was just fine. This stuff is soaked in ketchup, but it's quite tasty! Catfish was just as good (if not a little better). The batter was nice and light with just the right about of saltiness to compliment the flavor of the fish. It melted in my mouth! On to the sides: what southern place doesn't have collard greens? These were pretty damn good, and the serving was a very generous portion. Again, I ate them all and moved on to the Mac and Cheese, which was probably my least favorite thing... but I still ate all of it too! Don't pass this place by just because of the neighborhood or the way the building looks. The food more than makes up for any shortcomings of the exterior!

I've been going to this place since I was a kid. The owners are nice and the staff really treat you like family no matter what. Plus, lemonade in a mason jar? YES! My favorite will always be Rib tips with dressing and mac&cheese (don't forget the hot water cornbread) ! I've only had their breakfast a few times, but you can get a huge platter that will leave you with leftovers. As far as looks, it's nothing special, but no one comes here for the decor! Everything is pretty straight forward, no frills. If you are looking for grandma's home cooked meals, just come here.

  • Ian J.

This place served one of the best plates of baked catfish I've ever had. The staff is friendly, the food menu is vast, and the cooking is awesome. Also - they serve baked or fried corn bread. I tried the baked, and it was the best cornbread I've ever eaten. There was a richness and heft to it that you don't find with most cornbread --- most cornbread is dry - not here! The yams were absolutely awesome, too.

While in Indy I went to visit , kountry kitchen . When I walked in , I was greeted by a woman yelling across the room ,"for here or to go" ... My mother, and my son waited for the food for 40 mins . When we received our take out order .. It was all wrong. I ordered a fish sandwich , which was two pieces of white bread on the side and fish . Sugar was on and in everything ... Turnip greens, Mac and cheese. My son could not eat his food (chicken , Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes ) due to the amount of salt and sugar in his food. We had to throw it away and go eat somewhere else. #terrible I would never recommend this place !

  • LeSaundra B.

Horrible food and service. My chicken was undercooked and the sides were all boxed or can after we were told all homemade food. The fried pickles tasted like they were fried in fish grease....so, not worth the hype!!!!!!

This is not soul food. I lived in NYC for several years and have experienced some of the most amazing soul food in Harlem and also in New Jersey and Philly! What is this? As my friend and I made our way from New Jersey to Arizona on a road trip, we decided to get a hotel in Indianapolis, and explore before getting back on the road. So, me, loving Yelp and writing reviews myself, I found this place. I am unsure as to why people have created such good reviews of this place. My piece of grilled chicken was small and overly salty, the mac-n-cheese was a joke, from the box; I make better mac-n-cheese and I am from the north. The sweet potatoes were the best things on the menu. Oh and the lemonade and black tea were also delicious. As for the decor, please upgrade. It looked like a tacky-whole-in the wall with torn plastic table covers, ruined carpet, and sketchy bathrooms! Also your staff were constantly outside smoking in the back, in front of the customers. Please enhance your food and your ambiance. Sincerely, Very unsatisfied customer! Yuck!

The place looked pretty run down from the outside, infact creepy. On the inside, it's not fancy either, a little dark but you'd find a lot of famous people photos on the wall like Obama actually came here for the food! As for the rest of the people, I can't tell, I'm not American, but probably you'll know. Straight to the food, my bf and I shared an entree, smoked sausage with two eggs, toast, fried potatos and it was pretty good! The fried potatoes was kinda greasy but the smoked sausage? F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S ! Oh, and don't forget the sweet tea, it's sweetened to the perfect degree. Overall, it's been a fulfilling breakfast :)

Stopped for lunch on a whim when I Was driving to Minnesota from Ohio with my friend on a Sunday. We were terribly under-dressed in our t-shirts and shorts since people were in their Sunday Best after church. The food is amazing. Best tasting sides I've ever had. The fried food is amazingly non-greasy. Even after having a pork chop, fish and some chicken, I didn't feel tired of the food. The lemonade is legendary!

The food tastes just like my grandmothers. Which is great, since she doesn't cook anymore. Portions are a nice size. The staff is really nice. Also great to carry out for a lazy dinner at home.

I went on Sunday lunch and my daughter and I we were the only white people in the restaurant, but I never felt more at home than in this restaurant. I had been there the year before and was so full I didnt have room for desert. This time we split a meal so we could get deserts, the cobbler was great. The chicken, catfish, greens, corn bread and everything. The tea and lemonade is great GREAT SOUL FOOD !

  • Amanda K.

I'll begin with the good. The ladies that work at this place are hilarious and so welcoming to anyone who walks in the door! It's rare that you find people who are that genuine these days, especially working at a restaurant! The food is AAAMMMAAAAZZZING to say the least! While there I had fried chicken, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, creamed corn, and corn bread. I was a little taken aback when I realized that any pop ordered came as a warm can served with a jar of ice. But, the food made up for all of that. I could have kept eating and eating. So delicious! Now for the bad. This place is DIRTY. As I sat waiting for my food, all I could think about was the "old, dirty house" smell that permeated, and the serious potential for bugs to come crawling out of the tattered, dirty walls at any minute. (Please don't misread: there were NO bugs in sight... just seemed like a likely place to find them.) A visit to the bathroom (watch out for those weird steps in there), left me walking across a very sticky floor. This place has the service, it has the good food, but my goodness, why oh WHY can it not be clean?? Gross! I think I'd be madly in love with Kountry Kitchen if only I could have had that food as take out.

Okay. This place is the BOMB. And I mean that in a good way. It is a totally hole-in-the-wall establishment but a great place to go if you love Soul Food. I hate banana pudding and I loved theirs.... my mother ordered it and talked about how you could tell the custard was made from scratch. Here's a tip if you're just learning about "soul food" - You know you're at a real soul food joint when there's hot sauce waiting for you on the table, that they have daily specials that may or may not include the word "KYs", and that their drinks are served in jars. I had the white meat baked chicken with mustard greens and mashed potatoes for sides. I chuckled at how the mashed potatoes were insanely tasty yet I could identify a couple of mid-sized potato chunks.. ahh. just like home. My husband is from Memphis, TN, where they KNOW sweet tea and he nodded to the affirmative when he sipped KK's sweet tea. I highly recommend this place - and I hope soon they remodel!

Okay let me clarify the 3 stars; I would give it 4 but the location and decor bring the rating down!!! If you are looking for good soul food in Indianapolis this is definitely the place to go..however please call ahead and get your food to go and be careful if you go after dark!! And still be prepared to wait about 10-15 mins even if you call ahead to order your food. This is not the place to sit down and enjoy a good meal with great ambiance. I want to call Restaurant Impossible and tell them to come and please renovate this place...TODAY!!!! There is nothing good to say about the location or the decor. Now the food is absolutely delicious! I've been there about 5 times and the food has been consistently good! I've had the fried chicken, rib tips, baked chicken, pork chops, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, greens and corn bread and they were all very good! Definite must try if you are ever in Indy!

This was some very good soul food,.while visiting in Indy with my family of four, went there and it was closing time, so disappointed, after hovering in the foyer Ask for suggestions of other nearby places we left, as we sat in the car trying to decide what to do the owner came outside to the car and said come on back in we will find something for you to eat. Best chicken wings I've had in a long time, great food, The owners are the best, they make up for bad spots, go there just to see the owners

Barack Obama ate here! As the other reviews say, this is certainly excellent Soulfood. The wait staff is overly friendly and present a very welcome atmosphere from the moment you step in the door. Our waitress immediately sat us and mentioned they were famous for our sweet tea and lemonade. We both tried sweat tea, and true to their word it was awesome sauce. Being from the south and born to a mother highly critical of sweat tea, I can vouch for the Kountry Kitchen's version of the brew. I tried the fried pork chops with a side of mixed greens and black eyed peas. For you northerners who have never heard of black eyed peas, shame on you. These are not a group of talentless clowns singing pop music, but a smokey concoction of deliciousness in a bowl. Remember to eat black eyed peas on new years for good luck! As for the rest of the food, the mixed greens were actually the best. I highly recommend this as a side dish. Some of the best I have had. The pork chops were okay, but nothing special. And as for the cornbread which has rave reviews from others on here... I was honestly not impressed. It could be that it was a bit cold before I got to it. I think I shall try the baked variety next time. I noticed a sign for new waffle & wing breakfast specials (Looks like they are going after Maxines) and am looking forward to trying them for breakfast in the near future.

All I can say is, if you ever visit Indianapolis, this soul food is definitely soulful. Everything was tasty - the chicken and waffles, mac and cheese, greens, yams, especially good were the neckbones.... I also tried the pound cakes, which were all moist and delicious. This is homecooking at its best. A small business with a reputation that even President Obama made a stop...if you're ever in the area, check it out!

A total hole in the wall, but inside this place has character. We were, as the previous reviewer found, the only white people in the restaurant. Check out the website, there's a video with a couple of the Indy Colts eating here. They know what's up! The food was incredible; on the level of the meal I had at Capital Grille a few months ago. I didn't try the tea, but I second the other review re the lemonade. It was spectacular. I ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, cornbread and yams. I have had better cornbread, but the mashed potatoes and gravy and fried chicken was literally the best I have ever had. I will be back.

Another great meal at the Kountry Kitchen! Took my dad and one of his friends and they both loved it! The fried corn and Mac n cheese is awesome. My dad said the catfish was great! The lemonade is truly the best lemonade u will ever taste! We will definitely be back!

Been here twice and loved it both times. This is real soul food! If you love a good steak, St Elmos is worthy of it's reputation. But for a fraction of the cost, you will get great ribs, chicken, pork chops, greens, Mac n cheese, and on and on!

A lot of people question me, when I recommend Kountry Kitchen. But once they finally give it a chance, they always kick themselves for not rushing there sooner! The neighborhood looks a little rough, but I have never experienced any problems during my visits. The staff and fellow patrons are always friendly. The service is welcoming and efficient. The atmosphere is very homey; it's like eating at a friend's or relative's house. And the food... well, that's the best part. Hands down, the best soul food in Indy. The catfish is my favorite, but the fried chicken, baked chicken, and ribs are all delicious too. Both the fried and baked corn breads are tasty. Then there are the greens, the mac & cheese, the black-eyed peas, the mashed potatoes-- yum, yum, yum, and yum. I could continue, but shortly: it's all damn good. Please, don't let hesitations about the area (or anything else!) keep your taste buds from experiencing how wonderful Kountry Kitchen is.

Just came back from Country Kitchen Soulfood, which may be Kountry Kitchen because it's spelled differently on the sign outside and the menu's inside- but whatever. A few coworkers joined me, many of whom have not visited the Kitchen before. When we first walked through the door it was a bit intimidating, or something, to have 7 or 8 people just kind of staring back at you. You stand there and you don't really know what to do- is there a waiter, do I sit down, will someone please greet me?? A few seconds later a guy with a smile says "Hello, go ahead and have a seat." We find a table for 7 in the second room and dive right into the menu. I was torn between the smothered pork chops and the fried chicken. I've heard the pork chops were good but fried chicken just always sounds good. I could always opt for the healthier baked chicken or fish, but no... Also on the menu were rib tips, baked pork chops, cubed steak, chicken wings, a veggie plate and meatloaf. Sides to choose from were mac and cheese, collard greens, mustard greens, cabbage, mashed potatoes, yams, fried corn and I don't remember what else. With every meal you also receive your choice of wheat bread, white bread or cornbread. I ordered the smothered pork chops with mac and cheese, cabbage and fried cornbread. Lemonade to wash it down. We were there for our lunch hour so we were a bit worried we wouldn't make it back on time. To our surprise, maybe SIX minutes after we gave the waitress our order, we received our lunch. Well, half of us. One end of the table got theirs about 10 minutes later... The food smelled so good and it looked great. I'm very picky about my soul food and I NEVER really go to soul food restaurants. I leave with horrible gas because of all the grease and salt and I hate the presentation as everything is like drowned in gravy so I can't even see what I ordered. And a lot of times they smell like dishwater or onions or something. That wasn't the case here. And although the waitress gave me someone else's yams and gave someone else my cabbage, she was very nice about it and checked on us often. The yams were heavenly. The cabbage was much better than I expected and the porkchops were awesome. Now, macaroni and cheese is my favorite food so its hard to please me with the cheese. They were decent though. Not the best, not the gooey cheesiest, but decent and I ate them all... I cleaned my plate. Everyone at the table loved their food. More than once I heard "the chicken wings ARE seasoned just right!" The atmosphere was cozy and seemed to have a rich history. I loved the framed images on the wall of the city's black leaders- I noticed pictures of Julia Carson, DJ Geno, Rodney Bryant and many others. It made me think for a split second- at what point will they want to put my picture on the wall? Anyway, I now feel full and sleepy. When I think about the gravy I thought was so luscious just an hour ago, it now makes me want to hurl. Soul food will do that to you if you eat too much. Remember friends, eat until you get satisfied- not until you get full. I couldn't that at C(K)ountry Kitchen. It was that good. Find the Kitchen on the corner of 19th and Colllege, right across from Grace. My order was 12 bucks- not horrible for the amount and for the taste.

Dang, what a sad letdown. The food was barely "okay"... Over cooked okra, dry fish and Mac and cheese. I expected more flavor. The gravy was the best part. The service was so friendly tho, some of the best in the city. So disappointed in the food, really wanted to like this place.

Smh

I've been twice and I LOVE the food! The smothered pork chops are so tender and the gravy is divine. The cabbage is excellent as well as many other sides. Macaroni and cheese is my favorite food, but I wasn't crazy about theirs. The service leaves much to be desired, but clearly, I'd go again and again.

Been here twice and loved it both times. This is real soul food! If you love a good steak, St Elmos is worthy of it's reputation. But for a fraction of the cost, you will get great ribs, chicken, pork chops, greens, Mac n cheese, and on and on!

Poor service, the tea is entirely too sweet (diabetic comatose sweetness) and the experience did not meet my expectations. I ordered the baked chicken, dressing (which is an additional dollar) candied yams and Mac n Cheese. It was just okay, nothing spectacular!

Cheers!

  • Raquel S.

We went to Kountry Kitchen over the weekend. My rating of the foods we selected are below using a scale of 1 - 10 with 10 being the best: Fried Chicken Wings - 10 Fried Whiting - 10 Collard Greens - 10 Mac & Cheese - 2 Cornbread (baked) - 3 Baked Chicken - 8 Meatloaf - 9 Yams - 7 Decor needs updating. Overall, good experience. Would go again.

The food tasted ok. The service. ... it took over an hour to bring my food out, only for that to be wrong even the water! The restaurant was NOT busy. The owner was present only to ignore what had just happened. This was terrible terrible terrible!

Amazing soulfood. Fried chicken mac and cheese and the yams were awesome. They have fresh squeezed lemonaid that is incredible. The cornbread is unreal, delicious. This really is a hole in the wall restaurant but its awesome. Worth a visit!

Healthiest food in town if you stick to the lima beans, black eyed peas and collard greens. Excellent taste and friendly employees!! I'll be back next time I'm in Indy.

One of the best soul food restaruants in the country in a unassuming building cranking out great food the smothered pork chops are that deal my go to meal!!!

Yuck!
