You must also skip the shakes as well as other juices from the beverage menu. Almost all the dinner items on the menu are high in sodium except Grilled Tilapia and 6 oz. Top Sirloin & Toast. Prices seem high when you first look at them, but when your food arrives you realize it is HUGE!! Food is very tasty too. They serve breakfast until a certain time, then sandwiches, salads, quiche, and soups. Some days of the week they're open until 7pm and offer dinners too, other days they close at 4pm. They sell bottled and canned beer and have a decent-sized patio. They inside is quite small (as are the tables)...if you don't like sitting right next to strangers this place is not going to be your cup of tea. You walk in and order your food at the counter, pay, then order your drinks at a different counter and pay again. It makes it quicker for those who just want a coffee and a pastry so they aren't waiting in line behind the "eaters". Emporium also sells a large variety of prepared, frozen meals. After you've ordered your food and gotten your drink you find a table. Food will be brought out, with someone hollering out your number, so pay attention and wave when you hear your number! LOL Warning...there are onions in the macaroni and cheese. I guess they COULD be shallots, but I'm pretty sure they were onions. My total for a half-sub and side of mac and cheese was $11. Since I don't have to tip I'd say that's a pretty fair price. I could only eat half of each item so I'll have leftovers for dinner or lunch tomorrow. I do like that poppyseed vinaigrette to put on the sandwiches!

I had a chance to stop here over the weekend, and so I stopped in for lunch. My children were involved with the Butler Ballet for 10 years starting almost two decades ago, and then they were students at Butler for 5 years, and so I have been dining here pretty regularly for 20 years. So going in here I could see that the place looks almost exactly how it did 20 years ago. That's a compliment in that I know they keep the place maintained and spotless. The service as usual was fast and friendly, the menu as usual has lots of choices for everyone. I had the tuna salad on whole wheat and it was great. When I am really hungry I will get the turkey with a side of their fantastic potato salad. The potato salad is worth a trip here anyway. They have a great selection of drink options and some special desserts, including their flourless chocolate cake with a layer of ganache. The place gets crowded at lunch so don't hesitate to sit at the long row of doubles and start a conversation. Now that I think about it, 5 stars is appropriate, it really is my favorite place for lunch.

The place was cracking at 10 AM on a Saturday which is a good sign. If I lived in this 'hood I would be here every weekend. Fresh coffee (several choices as well. You go up to the beverage counter and ask for refills. prices are a little higher but as another reviewer mentioned, you're not expected to tip, so it's a wash. Order at the food counter and they bring the food out to you. Or order at the drink/pastry counter if you're not getting any made to order food for quicker service. Food came out pretty fast and was hot and fresh. A lot of neighborhood locals and Butler students here.

Mehhhh, what's all the hype about here? I'll be honest, after glancing at their website, I was unsure whether this was an actual restaurant or just a carryout deli with no seating. Luckily, Yelp confirmed that this is, in fact, a small restaurant where you order at a counter and someone brings out your food by number. The menu is pretty basic -- deli sandwiches, croissant sandwiches, salads, and soups, plus a bakery counter with sweets. No fun sauces or spreads, no interesting meats or cheeses, no unique ingredients... just basic combinations that a kid would make. Ham and swiss. Roast beef and provolone. Tuna salad melt. Menu kinda seems dated, like somewhere a picky grandmother would enjoy. The most exotic ingredient I saw on the menu was sprouts. If I wanted literally nothing on my sandwich besides turkey, bacon, and avocado, I'd just buy the stuff myself at the grocery store and save some $$. Would it kill ya to add an aioli or interesting mustard? Or a cheese besides colby or swiss? If I'm eating out, I want something fun that I can't make myself. This ain't it. That being said, the croissants are fabulous and buttery (and HUGE), and not sweet like so many are. I'd come back to grab croissants or to try some of the other baked goodies, but it's very unlikely that I'd eat a full meal here again.

I have lived down the street from this place for months and haven't stopped in until today. I ordered the Reuben with the soup of the day and an apple fritter. The apple fritter was amazing! The Reuben was delicious and the soup of the day chicken florentine was perfect. My friend go the roast beef sandwich that had bacon and cheese on it, Mac and cheese on the side with rosemary (perfect) and for dessert he got a chocolate croissant... Very good choice for lunch and I will surely be back very soon.

I want to like ISFE. I really do. However, in the few times I've been here I can't justify the value. The straw that broke the camel's back was coming here for lunch today when I paid $10 for a strawberry spinach salad. There were eight spinach leaves sprinkled over what seemed to be bagged iceburg lettuce. The chicken on top was pretty tastey, but this was definitely more of a six buck salad. Me and my boyfriend both ordered salads, no drinks and a side of mac and cheese. The total was $25. Not worth it. The saving grace of this place was the outdoor seating. It was seat yourself, and during the busy lunch hour we found plenty of seats underneath umbreallas. We ordered at the counter, and they brought our food to us outside. Pros: Outdoor seating, good service, big menu Cons: Overpriced, not fresh

These 5 big, sugar-coated stars are for the bakery. I have only had a sub-par tuna salad sandwich from here but even that dry, tasteless bit can't cause me to drop it down. The diiiiiiiiiiivine croissants keep that from happening. Nice variety of huge, buttery, flakey, orgasmic croissants. The BEST scones in the WORLD keep that from happening. Yes, in my experience, better than any of the wonderful scones I had in Ireland. The wife will literally only eat the chocolate chip scones they make here. She is ruined for other scones in this fair city or on the planet. The chicken pot pie to heat up at home keeps that from happening. The Berliner, jam-filled, sugared donut keeps that from happening. So, so good.

I sadly am giving only 3 stars for my most recent visit. I have always loved this place, but my assortment of entre's left a little to be desired 2 days ago. My mother is in the hospital and not eating so I decided to get some sure fired yummy food to entice her to eat. I bought an egg salad sandwhich a chicken salad sandwhich and a chili. I will start with the chili which was very tasty, thick and good. The chicken salad had very little flavor other than the vegetable condiments of lettuce etc. It was an unusual bland chicken salad that just left me flat. I did not try the egg salad but my mother said it was bitter. Full disclaimer my mother does add sugar to hers so maybe it was missing a little of her desired sweetness but what I noticed wss it looked a little dry. I am sure I will be back because I have been a fan for years, but this just did not seem like it was the usual high standard I expect from the Food Emporium. Hopefully next time!!!

The prices are a bit high, although the food has usually been pretty good. My low review is in regard to service. I've picked up carry out as well as dined in and it has always been dreadfully slow. My last visit, I ordered the daily special for carry out, which was soup and salad. Both of which were obviously already prepared. I waited for over 20 minutes for my food and it appeared to be missed. No apology or even comment in regard to my wait once I got my food. And this seemed to be my last experience with carry out as well. I don't think I will be back.

Neighborhood friendly place where there is always a crowd chowing down! Whether with family or with friends this is a great atmosphere to dine and chat. I have been going here for the last year or so as this is the favorite place of a wonderful friend. I always try something different so I experience a new flavor journey every time...

My first love at Illinois St Food Emporium will always be the iced sugar cookie. At $2 a piece they are well worth it. IFSE is a bit old school diner, a bit neighborhood secret, a bit sassy restaurant. You order at the counter and they bring it to you. Menu boards abound with breakfast, lunch and (somewhat recently) a new dinner offering. I recently went for brunch and grabbed an omelet. This thing was HUGE and it was served with potatoes (meh) with peppers and some toast. I couldn't finish the omelet. DO NOT PASS UP THE BAKERY COUNTER. You will be a sad panda if you do. Oh, and if it's snowing, your coffee is free. They have some pre-made items available in their freezers, too. You can take home desserts, breads and even entrees. ISFE feels like a place with history and meaning in Indianapolis. Go check it out for yourself!

Let's start with this-I was really hungry, so I ate it. Otherwise I would not have. Some unexpected free time landed me near an old old favorite so I decided to have breakfast here despite many other known and good options nearby. I remembered their homemade goodness and cozy environment and hey, sitting outside on a beautiful summer morning???-bonus! Sad to say, the food was not a bonus. The spinach bacon mushroom quiche sounded awesome and yet was so disappointing. The generous portion had been heavily microwaved, no doubt to melt the mound of greasy cheese just plopped on top to "freshen" it. The result was a tough, rubbery and essentially tasteless filling to a what might have once been flaky crust-that now was difficult to bite in to. And the side of fruit was warm (ew) and sincerely tasteless melon and pineapple-oddly also tough to chew. Aww-sadness. The coffee was tasty but run of the mill-my old emporium has a long way to go to get back to where it was.

There are some things that a restaurant can offer that are as important as the food itself. And at the Food Emporium, the neighbors play a huge part in your experience here. We've been going for nearly 20 years and have seen a few changes along the way, nearly all of them for the better so far. At the Food Emporium, you'll see people you know, and you'll meet people that you'll know the next time you go. We love walking over for coffee and a scone or a croissant in the morning. Both are scrumptious and the prices are reasonable. Talking about reasonable, we recently tried some omelets and were impressed with the food and the pricing. Most impressive about the Food Emporium is the bakery. Most people don't realize there's a bakery in the neighborhood where you can go for fresh breads and desserts. Haven't tried the beet noire chocolate torte yet? You've missed something special!

I've only gone for the baked goods case, and was delighted with my purchases (rugelach, scones, danishes, and cookies).

What a meal! I had their breakfast quiche and carmel rolls at a catered event so it was definitely time to stop in- you must try their carmel pecan gooie rolls. Today I had the cauliflower and cheese soup, which was terrific. Rich and tasty. Then the chicken Philly was full of surprises. Chicken was perfect and the bread was remarkable. Toppings were really fresh and yummy. To think that I could finish it off with a mammoth and excellent piece of German chocolate torte for the very reasonable price I paid- wow! Really the only problem is making a decision - huge menu from super healthy to comfort food, all with delicious combos of flavors. And now I know where to get frozen hors d'oeuvres, cakes and dinners to take home! I hope you plan to be there when they participate in Dining Out For Life on Thursday April 30 to raise money for the care and prevention of HIV - just by dining here the restaurant will help support a great cause. And you get a great meal - the kind of place the neighbors hang out at multiple meals a week. Enjoy!

Everything you could desire from a neighborhood bakery. The cake is mouth watering and impossible to pass up. I am a big fan of the emporium sub. I never thought bologna could taste gourmet but Illinois emporium pulls it off. Clearly they aren't using hormel here. The mac and cheese is insane, so many cheesy flavors. The best part about this establishment is the genuinely first class service. It is pseudo self serve but literally ever employee is happy and friendly. Maybe all the employees get unlimited cake.

I want to love the IL Street Food Emporium, but I just can't. I find I'm typically disappointed by the food. Too chunky chicken salad, salads with iceberg lettuce. They just seem a bit behind the times. The cookies and pastries are usually pretty good. The location is convenient if I want to meet a northside friend for lunch. And it is perhaps not as crowded as Patachou. Just don't set your expectations too high.

A co-worker recommended this restaurant the other day, so we decided to head over for lunch. I was really excited, since he's never steered me wrong before (as far as epicurean adventures go...). The eating area is some-what small and cozy, but not the worst I've seen. Local art on the walls, which added to the home-grown ambiance. They have a great selection of breakfast and lunch items on the menu; most of which I would try anytime. The price is a bit high, but after being served, I felt a lot better about my purchase. They service was pretty reasonable, especially for how busy it was that day. After lunch, I decided (gave in) to all the delicious looking cakes and pastries they had in the display cases. I asked one of the workers to give a recommendation - the chocolate mousse cake - and it was fantastic! (She even brought me two slices for the price of one!) The coffee was very good as well. I will be for sure heading back for some more of their great local cuisine, you should too. Cheers!

Unlike the motto of a well-known chain of retail stores, with ISFE you should "expect less, pay more". Like others who have reviewed it, myself and my family wanted to like ISFE - we live in the neighborhood and had been meaning to go for a long time. But we had lunch there today: two adults and two kids among us had three sandwiches, one salad, and four sodas and the bill came to more than $50! Ridiculous! And the food really wasn't that great - the sandwiches were dull and dry (except my wife's croissant, which was soggy) and there was no dressing on the Greek salad. And they make you tip in advance before the food is delivered to your table. By way of contrast, later in the day we went to Bru downtown (three premium craft beers, two large orders of fries, an order of delicious, fresh-out-of-the-oven pretzels + great downtown atmosphere) and then had four frozen yoghurts at YoguLatte) and the total bill was less than we paid at ISFE. Needless to say, ISFE will not be seeing us again.

Hustle. Bustle. Unbungled. Unbotched. Cakes. Pies. Coffees. Juices. Teas. Greens. Egg salad, Chicken Salad, Turkey, avocado and more avocado. Illinois St. Food Emporium has what you want for breakfast and lunch. Hot or cold. Big or small. Slim and trim or husky and musty, I have a good American greenback to bet that you'll be pleased with your visit here. My food and world knowledge was gained in different cities with Jewish deli after Jewish deli. It's where I prefer to break bread every day. Alas... I'm in a city where there isn't much going on in that department frankly, and this place is a good alternative. Steadfast service. Open to all questions. The special of the day was made and put on display in full 4D! Nice touch. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen that before!

I just love Yelp. All of these differing opinions. From 1 star to 5. My rating of 3 is the mean of my 2 other possible scores 2 & 4. I could have given any of these rating with total justification. The place is rather pricey for what you get.On the one hand the sans were nicely toasted and tasty, but the grilled cheese and Havarti Delight were kind of skinny. On the other hand you got a decent size salad or a nice bowl of soup with them. Not to mention the grape and orange slice garnish. No doubt an homage to early Waffle House dining. My chili was decent, but nothing to make you howl at the moon. My buddy's salad looked as though it was spring mix. Bummer to read in one of the reviews that they were mostly iceberg. Their chocolate glazed donuts were tasty but for $1.67 each one should have had 2 brothers tagging along with it. Their cakes are magnificent but sooo expensive. I will probably return to try a pastry. I have paid more for worse in my time.

I often find myself craving a cookie or grilled cheese from Illinois Street then remember it's extremely overpriced for what it is. But then again, this is just like another Meridian Kessler restaurant. Good food, high prices, and amazing service. For me, I just realize this is what I will get living in this neighborhood. Overall, it's a great place to treat yourself to every once and a while just not every week.

I had heard good things about this place. But my experience this morning was anything but good. I was up early this morning and went to get a coffee. I have been told of the delicious eclair and decided to stop and get one to go. When I walked in a women with dark hair was behind the counter. No Good Morning, Hello or any type of greeting. So I started looking in the display case and saw no eclairs. I asked the employee if they had some eclairs. I was told a simple and firm, no. I inquired further and asked if they were out or if it was too early? She said they only make them "towards the weekend". I left. Why do places put things on their websites and menus without including this information? How hard would it be to put an icon next to menu items that are not available everyday? Sadly, this was my first and last visit!

I stopped in to ISFE again recently for my weekly "before class" dinner with a girlfriend. I hadn't been in in a while, but good as ever, this little neighborhood eatery did not disappoint. I chose the vegetable soup - I always get the veggie soup, even if I'm eating dessert - and the Garden Delight with tuna salad....yum! But, the thing that really stood out during this stop was the freezer case...it was chockful of all kinds of grab-n-go to take home and cook items. I was salivating just looking at all the stuff. I was particularly interested in the Veggie Breakfast Strudel. Had I not been on the way to school, I would have snapped one of those up for sure. Instead, I plan to return on a Saturday and stock up for those nights (and mornings) when I just don't want to play chef.

This is a simple quaint little deli place. I liked the outdoor seating. I didn't get to try much on the menu because I wasn't very hungry, but the options looked divine. I would definitely go back.

The Illinois Street Food Emporium was a top class deli/bakery on the mid-north side of the city. For a few years, I lived about within a mile of the Emporium, my friends and I visited often (for lunch or breakfast). Their breads & pastries, their calling cards, with croissants that where exceptionally light, buttery, and flaky - the way they SHOULD be. And their sandwich rolls and breads were heavy, yet not doughy, and very flavorful. Their deli meats top class - the best pastrami on rye in town (take THAT Shapiro's ...). And their selections of desserts (either eat-in, or take home),,,, wonderful, from unique pies and cakes to surprisingly light and flavorful flans to some of the best cookies in town. Breakfasts (quiches, eggs, breakfast rolls, breakfast meats) typical in selection, but exceptional in preparation. The orange juice, fresh squeezed, and the coffee very good. The Emporium at that time was a cozy little shop, with seating for about 50. It was a very welcoming place, where the regulars didn't mind helping newbies figure out what choices to make. Judging by the other more current reviews, it is nice to see that some things don't change that much.

The prices were a little high but the quality was excellent. A good lunch spot that feels right at home in a cool, quasi east coast-ish feeling part of town.

Great staff first off, with a clamoring, yet calming atmosphere that smells of pastry and coffee, the cream cheese croissant and the pecan rolls were amazing this is one of the greatest assets in the Butler-Tarkington area, and a perfect beginning to a bustling commute, or a lazy Saturday morning.

Great neighborhood locally-owned eatery. Very pricey. $1.75 for bread with the chilli. Sanwiches looked pricey too. Still, not much else around. The chilli was very good.

Living in Broad Ripple, brunch is just about as much of a necessity as oxygen, and among all the options, the Food Emporium has always been one of my go-to's. I have tried both the French Omelet as well as the bacon and cheese omelet, and on both occasions, I was very impressed with my grub! The omelets are always perfectly proportioned, with just the right amount of delicious goodies wrapped inside. :) I love the down home feel of the inside of the Food Emporium, but the place to be is their awesome patio out front, it's perfect for people watching, and to catch a nice breeze with not too too much sun in your face. The reason for my three stars: on my last two visits, our food took over 30 minutes to get to us. But in both instances, I only found this out after I stopped someone to tell them that I had been waiting so long. Then they told me that they had messed up on my omelet and it would be another 15-20 minutes...WHAT?? my lands...I was let down. I'll still keep givin it a go because I love the food, but man it would be nice to not have to spend and hour and a half getting breakfast!

They get four stars for the croissants oh, wow, they are good! Buttery, flaky and delicious! This is not health food folks...I went through three napkins while eating my sandwich to avoid getting buttery fingerprints everywhere. I had the turkey, bacon and avocado croissant, and while the turkey and bacon were perfectly fine, the avocado initially seemed missing in action, but then found a really small slice. I know avocados are expensive this year, but might be better to just take it off the menu if avocados are too pricey. Some lettuce, tomato, pickles, or other veggies would have been a nice addition to the sandwich. As others have mentioned the sandwich combos are pretty basic here, but I do think there is a place for a good, simple ham or turkey and cheese. But back to the croissants....I may not make a special trip back for a turkey sandwich, but need to get back to the bakery...I'm thinking next trip will be just croissants and/or other baked goods. The cookies looked really tempting too...next time....

We came here tonight for dinner. I've never heard of or seen this little place, so what a cute and sweet surprise it was. I had the "turkey health sandwich" which was pretty delicious. I got the mac and cheese that everyone raved about and found it to be a little boring. My fiance had the Chicken Tarkington, which he didn't particularly like. He ate the whole thing but said he wouldn't order it again, and he thought that the ingredients could have all been used in a better way. I didn't try it, but I can't say that it looked appetizing. Side note--the bread on my sandwich and the bread that came with his dinner were DELICIOUS. Like very rarely do I just want to pick up a carb-y slab of bread and go for it, but this stuff was great. We also got a strawberry/sugar glaze cronut (omg level delicious) and a chocolate croissant (a little meh, I've had better). Really friendly employees too! Maaaaybe a 3.5? I feel OK about rounding up to 4 stars for the following reasons: To be fair, my fiance was trying to order something outside his normal box, so maybe his dish would appeal to others. I'm pretty sure if we tasted all the other hundred pastries they made, this would be 4 stars no question. And, I felt like the value was pretty good--each half of my sandwich was the size of a normal sandwich at home, so two meals for me!

On a summer day two summers ago, I had just moved to Indy and was looking for a place to unwind after a hard week of training. I came across a very beautiful street corner which was to become my home away from home: 56th and Illinois Street. When I got out of my car, I found this really nice dig of Illinois Street Food Emporium. It was a high quality neighborhood deli/bakery with a beautiful patio perfect for people watching. The service is friendly, highly competent, the mark of a high quality family run business. They treat customers as family. The drinks are plentiful. Complementary ice water is always out on an elegant tray for takers. The coffees and teas are of high quality. The beer selection is good for a neighborhood delicatessen. The food has a nice touch of homliness to it. No, you won't get prime grade food but you will get consistently good quality. The soups are always a treat and good for the soul. Particularly good sandwiches include: The Philly Cheesesteak, The Reuben, The California and the BLT). The lunch specials and breakfast specials are generally featured items of the menu that are a dollar cheaper. If the day's option is appealing to you, go for it as it will save you some money! Plus you can see what it looks like. Illinois Street Food Emporium is such a good neighborhood centerpiece and is so homely that it has become a weekend of traditions of sorts that will always resonate with my heart! Food 13/15 (Tried and true: a wide variety of sandwiches, great soups and an excellent breakfast) Location 5/5 (Located in the calm, village like atmosphere of 56th and Illinois Street in Indy) Atmosphere 8/10 (Inside, a bit simple. Beautiful patio and view that immerses you in the neighborhood) Service 10/10 (2nd to None: Friendly, personable and helpful) Value 8/10 (Prices are fair: no bargain but far from a rip off) Total Score (44/50: Almost rounds to 5 stars but gotta go 4. Still, though, this is a highly competent neighborhood gathering spot for food that will comfort you. )

When I am visiting Indianapolis I go to this place once in a while because it has a lot of sentimental value to me as I used to often frequent the Food Emporium back in the day after a tough long practice at Rivi swim club just up the road. The food is ok, nothing special. On the other hand the bakery is still top of the line! Some of the best croissants and cookies I have had! What they really need to work on is how long it takes to get the food to their customers. The last two times I have been here I have waited almost 30 minutes for the food to come out and it was not even that busy. The place is small so it could be that just one person is working on the food. I will probably come back here for the bakery/pastries and skip breakfast

Wow. The one reason to come here and come back again are the croissants. And their croissant sandwiches? HUUUGGE! I won't deny I was skeptical this was going to be any good. The place and menu just seem to have an air of outdated and I though the food would reflect that. Nope. Delicious. I can't wait to go back for some pastries from their bakery. Food: 4/5 - Don't bother with the fruit salad, not worth it. Service: 4/5 Location: 4/5

I went to Illinois St. Food Emporium for breakfast on Saturday morning. The place was hopping which is always a good sign. I had the Denver omlette which was delicious! One of my friends had the spinach omlette which looked amazing too. It came with toast, and the sourdough was perfectly toasted and yummy. They have an extensive case of ready to cook bread, pastries and other dishes. I successfully avoided ordering anything from the pastry case, but it looked awesome. There's quite a bit of seating inside and out, but be prepared to wait a while to be served after ordering your food at the counter. I think it took 10-15 minutes before my omlette was ready. It was fine tho, they kept the coffee coming and I was happy.

Weekday lunch, so not crowded. Had a Reuben, which was very good. The real standout was the bakery items. The rugelah was yummy, the cinnamon scone was perfect, and the frosted sugar cookie was one of the best I've had. I'll have to visit my brother again soon, just to come back here. Oh, service was very friendly, too.
