Although the exterior is unassuming, inside the decor is homey but trendy. The staff are friendly and eager to please. The food was nothing exciting but the coffee was delish. I had originally gone here with the intention of eating then studying, but never ended up staying after so can't comment on how good it would be for that. If the food choices were more exciting I would venture out there again from downtown.

Stopped in on opening day. Ordered an iced coffee, but informed they could only do an Americano at the moment. Fine by me. Was asked if I needed room for cream (I did) & they left the perfect amount. It seemed they had a head barista & she was training 2 others. Then the owner walked over & introduced himself, I like that touch. The price was right around $2.25? Just about the same price as a tall iced coffee at Starbucks & this one was larger. Placed a buck in their fairly full tip jar & headed to work. I didn't have a taste until I got to work & added my stevia & cream. It was outstanding! Great brew, no burned beans, just delicious flavor. I'll be a regular, as I live in the neighborhood and have been waiting for over 10 years for someone to bring a coffee shop to the neighborhood.

I decided to take my son into the eatery this morning with the hopes of just picking up a coffee and muffin. The establishment doesn't open until 8am and I saw the owners walk in at 7:58am. This is a restaurant, typically you arrive a tad earlier to prep the food and brew the coffee. We arrived and they looked upset that they had a customer walk in during business hours! As we were selecting a seat I saw a rat run on a counter in the kitchen and politely pointed it out to them. They just seemed disgusted and didn't apologize or make it seem like it was out of the ordinary. At this point I didn't even want to eat there but asked if they had any muffins and she stated that they did not and the cook wasn't there yet. If you are going to offer breakfast then why wouldn't you have food available during breakfast hours?

Five stars because I honestly can't think of anything that could have been better. This place is a Starbucks-killer. Comfortable atmosphere, friendly but not overbearing staff, delicious chai tea latte and a modest but solidly tasty sandwich. Can't say enough about how comfortable the atmosphere was and how friendly ask the staff were, even Werth a ducky customer who had lots of questions. The only reason I was tempted not ti write this review was that I worry if the secret gets out it willl always be packed! I will most certainly be back.

Oh Garfield Park Eatery & Coffee, I was drawn in, admittedly inquisitive and questioning. Could there really be a place so close to me that is as magically adorable as other Yelpers raved? I stepped through your open doors and immediately my premonitions melted away, I knew I found a new favorite. Who did all your designing? I'm not sure, but I could probably kiss them. The space is so open, the colors are perfect, and the local artwork all displaced perfectly. This late Monday morning we had the place to ourselves, but I'm sure that won't be the case for long. I can't properly attest to your food, but I can say the service was friendly, and the tea was exactly what I needed. Classy, little eatery, you're a gem in this neighborhood, perfect for all: the business man/woman just stopping in for their coffee, the girls' out for brunch, a family after their stroll in the park, a couple on their first awkward coffee date, and everyone else who lives their life on whimsy and coffee. (Maybe it's just me with the whimsy thing.. but it sure does make things happy)

What an awesome cafe in the garfield park neighborhood! Everytime driving up Shelby, I wanted to make time to stop in and check out the little place. Walking in, the smell of delicious coffee roasting hits you and the decision of a comfy leather couch, high top or bench seat comes in to play. Would be a great place to bring in the laptop and sit down for some emails or a nice book. UIndy is really close and I could see this place being a popular student hangout once word gets out. Order at the register once you've made your pick. I had the BLT with a dill. Of course its a double decker! It was classic perfection. Nibbled on a few other friends dishes and everything was delicious. Leaving, I had a cappuccino to go and it was excellent. Had a chance to meet the owner out at UIndy homecoming this past weekend and he was a very nice guy. He lives locally and opened the place to help restore the neighborhood as a little passion project. I will absolutely be back to either pop in for a coffee to go or have a sit down and a sandwich.

Quaint little place. Can't really speak on the food because I came in for hot chocolate and a muffin. The hot chocolate was so good I forgot to take a picture before I downed it. Ebony, the hostess was amazing.

I stopped in for a quick soup and salad lunch. I love the Cobb salad and today I paired it with French onion soup. I finished my meal with a warm and cozy apple dumpling with ice cream. Yum! Speaking of yum; try the butterscotch mocha......it's heavenly.

This was our first visit here. Flavored coffees were very good - Four of us had breakfast. I had French toast with fresh fruit. Everything is very good. Price was reasonable. Atmosphere was very comfortable to be able to surf the Internet, talk or read etc. They have out door seating area. Staff was nice

Found this place today by accident, ... IN MY OWN BACKYARD (so to speak)... through Restaurant.com .... SO glad that I did! On a Saturday, just a few hours before closing, and we KNOW that's the test of whether they are good or not, we visited for dinner and thought we'd give it a whirl... IT WAS AWESOME! I had looked through reviews online... some were mixed but perhaps they went right after they opened... today was great. I even took my mother... THE PICKIEST CUSTOMER ON THE PLANET!!! and she didn't have one complaint... She and my husband both ordered the Pork Tenderloin (comes with fries) - $7.95 (a GREAT value) and I (since just had a tooth pulled last week and still on the semi-baby food diet, lol) ordered the Grilled Cheese (also came with fries) $5.75 - which the very nice waiter raved about as 'his fav'. It was EXCELLENT! First, it came on sour dough... come on... grilled sour dough bread? I don't care WHAT you put in that buttery crispy goodness, it'll be great, but the cheese choice and ratio used was surprisingly excellent. It wasn't your standard "singles" product but real cheeses. Additionally the garnish of pickle was nice, again, more of a cold pack pickle than the off the shelf kind. And the fries, OMG, super hot, and NICE TOUCH (and a surprise) salt and pepper GRINDERS... a little grind on top was awesome... everyone's food at our table was hot, fresh, and tasty. The French Onion soup EXCELLENT! I have eaten it as MANY places and the broth was Amazing! The bread, although a little high on the ratio of bread to soup, was cut up in crouton chunk sized pieces a VERY nice touch making it much easier to eat the normally "labor-intensive soup"... Altogether, it was great, owner came over and visited our table, a (what I think was) teachers group was sitting in the couch lounge area having a discussion/meeting, and some customers at the espresso bar... great experience and a MUST for me to repeat... simple menu, VERY CLEAN AND SPOT ON FOR DETAILS place... prices very appropriate for the area. A neighborhood sandwich shop you should give a try. Note, you order at the counter and bus your own tables at end - something we were a little confused about but after we saw other customers, we got it. Then on the way out.... the large glass cookie jar with nearly 4 inch diameter cookies were calling us... we all got one to go... I just had mine, OMG!!! It was a cowboy cookie highly recommended by the waiter and it was AMAZING! Oatmeal cookie with chocolate chunks and cranberries.... it was the perfect blend of chewy and crispiness I want in a cookie. Repeat customer here - yes please

This gem is located a couple blocks from my home so I'm a frequent visitor. I've stopped in while walking my dog in the park many times (dogs are allowed at the counter area if you are getting a to-go order or in their outside area). Also, I've had breakfast here twice. Coffee...I've had their regular, white chocolate mocha, and iced americano. All excellent and reasonably priced. If I had to choose a favorite it would probably be the white chocolate. Breakfast is excellent as well. I've haven't had a bad dish yet and the service is very warm and friendly. It is small place with a random decor like many other fountain square area places.

I'm not one you'd usually find boppin' south of Fountain Square, so when I had to pick a spot for lunch in that neighborhood, I was glad I stumbled upon The Garfield. Located just across the street from the south end of Garfield Park, this eatery has plenty of space, light, and artwork to create a welcoming, comfortable coffee shop. I was thrilled to see the Liberation Roasting sign and felt right at home with my cup of Ethiopia Aricha. Had I only gone the coffee route, I would give this place four stars. ...but then I looked at the lunch menu. It's nothing special -- just your typical club sandwiches. I wish there had been a signature sandwich or more twists to those offered. My friend who ordered the rueben had a pretty sad-looking sandwich that I didn't wish I had ordered. Not caring for my options, I inquired about the soup of the day and chose to go with the cream of carrot. Sadly, it was bland, tasting like a bowl of thick orange cream with a hint of cheese. Luckily, I paired it with a garden salad that had a homemade vinaigrette, which saved my lunch. (Side note: why are you using mayo when you could be putting your housemade dressings on your sandwiches?) In short - as a coffee shop, The Garfield gets four stars, and you should pop in for your caffeine fix. As a cafe, they get two stars, so plan your lunch date elsewhere.

When I saw this cafe was opening up just a couple blocks away from me, I was so excited! But alas, after three tries, I am done being excited. I am actually quite pissed. The first time I went here, I ordered a small iced chai latte. The barista (who was very friendly) informed me that the iced drinks only come in one size. Not surprising because there are a few other shops I have run into that do this. What did surprise me though was when the other barista pulled out a Tazo Chai Tea box, poured it and some milk in a glass with ice, then proceeded to ring me up a bill that was over $5. $5 for a boxed tea?!? Are you kidding me? I just saw you only use maybe $2 worth of product, quite the markup. I walked away upset. A couple weeks later I thought maybe I should give the place another shot. I decided to play it safe and order just a coffee. It was $2.30, hot, and took care of the fix I needed. Well, once again, the problems arose at the register. The barista told me the coffee would be 2.80 something with tax. That's .50 in tax! I don't think so! There is no reason I should be paying over 20% in tax! I, once again, walked away upset. This morning I was running late and really needed some breakfast and coffee. I thought to myself "Why not give Garfield Eatery one more shot?" God, did I make a mistake. I walked in to an empty cafe, at 8AM. I thought that was weird since my regular cafe is jam packed by 7:30. But hey, the place is still relatively new. Well I quickly figured out why they weren't busy. I looked at the menu and ordered a breakfast sandwich. The barista (who once again was friendly) told me that the kitchen doesn't open until 10 and they only serve breakfast on weekends! WTF? Your sign says "Eatery and Coffee" which leads me to believe that you are a coffee shop. If you don't want to open your kitchen, you could at least have some pastries or something. I walked away upset, empty-handed, and pretty assured I will never step foot back into Garfield Park Eatery again. I will continue to patron my regular cafe from now on, or God forbid in a pinch, Starbucks.

I am sure that my review will be up to 4 or 5 stars in no time. I've been twice in the past couple of weeks, and I am happy to call myself a Yelp "regular," now. The café is in wonderful location for bringing the Garfield Park area up a notch in its cultural offerings. The owners and staff are incredibly friendly and approachable. So far, the food is wonderful with generous portions. The coffee is great! AND, it comes from local (Fountain Square) roaster Liberation Coffee. The arrangement of eclectic furniture and local art sets a great tone for The Garf. So... why a 3? Despite being open since last summer, this place seems to be struggling a little to find its pace. I don't know if revenue is a problem, but throwing some extra money into specifics would definitely help. First, they've had to brew more coffee both times I've been there, leaving customers waiting for longer than they should for a cup. (They seem to only be brewing one carafe at a time and waiting until it runs dry to brew another.) It's time to invest in another carafe and/or have a better system for always having a brew ready. This is ESSENTIAL for a coffee shop in my book. Second, they need to invest some money in the bathrooms. They're functional and private. But, they don't add to the appeal of the place at all. (The bathrooms are definitely what earned my "divey" checkmark.) Divey isn't bad, but in the case of peeling cabinets and reed diffuser rods stuck in a mere kitchen glass, it isn't good. Keep it up guys. I love the place. I will be back. And, I'm sure you will continue to rock!

My dad and I went to this place for lunch today. We ordered the tenderloin, to share, and it was delicious. The atmosphere was comfortable, the place was clean, the staff was very friendly and the price is right. A refreshing new place in Garfield Park:)

What a delightful addition to the neighborhood! The coffee drinks are top-notch, affordable, and come with very friendly service. This is a great place to spend an afternoon, sipping chai and working. Fast wifi, comfy chairs, big sunny windows. The salad/sandwich/soup lunch combos are great. The mixed greens on the salad were the good kind, not crummy iceberg lettuce. I wasn't impressed with the vegetarian options, but I hope that as they grow and the menu offerings stabilize, that they'll offer a little more in that area. I recommend a black bean burger :) For visitors: the Cafe is a very convenient stop off the highway. There aren't really any cool shops within walking distance, but the Garfield Park Conservatory is an amazing hidden gem, and just across the street.

So excited to have a new coffee shop & cafe in the area. Stopped in for some breakfast and was immediately greeted by the friendly baristas who explained the ordering process and let me choose my seat. Great seating areas for singles or larger groups. Menu is small but appetizing. I had the eggs benedict with country potatoes and enjoyed every bite. Couldn't even finish, but wished I could. Had a regular coffee, but will try one of their specialty coffees next time...and yes, there will definitely be a next time. Best part of this cute and quaint shop opening is that it replaced a very scary looking dive bar. Quite an improvement for the Garfield Park area!

I was really excited to finally have the time to check this place out. When my significant other and arrived the barista was very friendly and immediately told us where the menus are, where we order, and where we can sit. We both very much appreciated this. I had the Cafe Mocha and a bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich on a English muffin. The cafe mocha was perfect and kept me buzzing for hours, and the sandwich tasted just like home, yum! My bf had the Chai tea latte and a coffee cake muffin with lemon drizzle. The chai tea tasted just like fall (if fall had a "taste"). The coffee cake muffin is literally the best I've ever tasted. The texture was beyond perfect, the lemon drizzle on top is a perfect addition to coffee cake, and it was still warm! We were very pleased to discover they bake everything there. I enjoyed it so much I went back the following morning to get myself another cafe mocha and coffee cake muffin. I'm going to need them to come off the recipe.

Finally, a decent spot to get good soups and salads on the Southside. I've been several times and haven't had a bad experience yet. The staff is friendly, the place is cozy, and the food is great!

Great atmosphere. Tables for eating and cozy chairs for relaxing. We just stopped in for coffee (I liked my Latte), but the sweet treats looked tempting. I will definitely go back for breakfast. The staff was friendly and responsive.

Our food here was soooo good. We had the huevos, the Cobb salad w/chicken added and homemade balsamic and the pulled pork sandwich. We will go back! The girls at the front counter seemed "new" to the business of customer service. But there were 2 guys that delivered our food...that I think also made it, that were so gracious and kind. We love this place!!!! GO! SOON! And then go over to the Garfield Park conservatory (for $1 entrance) and sunken gardens, and walk it off.

I've stopped in for coffee before, but this was the first time I ordered food. I was with a group and we sample each others orders. The Reuben is hands down the best I've ever had. Turkey Melt was also extremely good and very unique. French Onion Soup, A+. Their Ambrosia was divine.

Great place! Atmosphere and coffee are the perfect combo in this gem! The food could use some work but definitely will be back.
