Called in an order and still waited 30 mins once I got there. Food is great and the people are nice but the wait is terrible! I was never offered a discount for the inaccurate wait time estimate. If you call ahead, add 15 mins to the wait time they give you.

I maintain my MUST TRY recommendation... Brisket is still so tender and yummy...mmmm The wings are very good and the ribs are very tasty as well. Looks like I'll be stopping here again when in the area

Wonderful attitude. I came late at night close to closing. They were more then happy to make me some food. Delicious home made sauces and wonderfully smoke flavors. Brisket was perfect. They do catering too, something I might bring up to a company I work with near by. Because this place is perfect for company BBQ.

My friend and I have been looking for a good BBQ place in Indy and have finally found it! I had the brisket and ribs. The brisket was amazingly tender! The ribs were meaty and delicious! I had the Mac and cheese and green beans for sides...nothing special, but at least they have options. Then again, who the heck goes to a BBQ joint for sides? It's all about the meat. My friend had the ribs and chicken. He said the chicken was good, but not as good as in Lafayette. He loved the ribs. Sides were Mac and Cheese and cole slaw. He thought the slaw was excellent. Do yourself a favor-get off your couch and get some MEAT!

Good BBQ, friendly service, decent prices. The brisket was fatty, but I enjoyed the pulled pork and chicken. The mac and cheese was cold, but it still tasted fine.

just great bbq. had half rack with green beans and potato salad. not the best potato salad I have had, but honestly some of the best southern style green beans. easily top 3 ribs I've eaten, they do a great job here. get the spicy bbq sauce, it's excellent. the small bites of my friends brisket and pulled pork yielded the same results. gender and tasty. good job

This place is fantastic. I love me some good BBQ, and I think this place is my favorite. Everything I've ever ordered on the menu is perfect. The ribs, the tips, the pork, and the wings all rock. The hot sauce is possibly the best BBQ sauce on earth.

In my never ending quest to try out all the restaurants on my side of town, tonight I found myself ending a long day at work with dinner at Black Diamond, a BBQ joint at 64th & Rucker (think 65th & Binford Boulevard). It's in the same strip center with Morellis Cleaners and just a wee bit north of the shopping center with Just Judy's and Peak Performance. I'd had a couple of friends recommend Black Diamond after my rave of the nearby G.T. South's. Black Diamond has a fairly basic menu that includes both meals and sandwich options. Everything centers around BBQ - There's no condescending diversions for the faint of stomach. They have Ribs, BBQ Chicken, Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Smoked Turkey options. They have variations within these meats, but it comes down to either getting it with a Combo ($14-17 including meat plus 2 sides) or Sandwich ($6.50 - $8, though they also offer pounder options that are higher). Sides are available that come in small, medium, large - cole slaw, baked beans, potato salad, mac n' cheese, etc. They don't offer fries, but they do have chips for $1. They also have $6.99 lunchtime meals. The strip center has a curb cut in the middle of the relatively small building. The parking spot works pretty well. The door is a glass door and opened fairly easily for me. As you enter, the small establishment has a dining area to the left (straight ahead) and the order counter on the right. There's also a small dining area with all higher chairs/counters toward the front of the restaurant. It's definitely not wheelchair friendly. They also offer limited outdoor dining (not full service). The crew was friendly and helpful with each of the three employees working all greeting me at some point. They also gave me a smaller menu to read when they saw I was straining my neck to look up at their overhead sign. I ordered the BBQ chicken sandwich with cole slaw and an unsweetened iced tea (they have one size for fountain drinks - they also offer some bottled options). The entire meal came in at just over $12. The BBQ chicken was quite tasty - you can order it hot, mild, or sweet. They made a point of saying sweet was their specialty and I went that direction. It was definitely good, though the "sandwich" fell apart almost immediately and I ended up eating most all of it with a fork. The sesame bun simply couldn't handle the meat. The cole slaw, which came in a cup, was good but pretty much middle-of-the-road in terms of cole slaw and I thought a bit slight for an extra $2.25. I was also disappointed that a $1.89 unsweetened iced tea didn't include an offer of a refill. How does someone have only one drink while eating BBQ? I may have had the option - most of their fountain drinks were outside the counter, but the iced tea was behind the counter. I don't know if they'd planned for me to not eat there, but they bagged everything up - didn't include napkins. They included one fork with the cole slaw (fortunately since the food couldn't be eaten as a sandwich). What does all this add up to? The service was good, but not great. They were friendly and helpful, but basic things like not getting a refill and not getting napkins still linger in my mind. The BBQ chicken was good, but the sandwich falling apart bothered me and the cole slaw was fairly average. While the sandwich seemed fairly decent in size, as I ate it I couldn't help but think it seemed a tad modest. The price? For $12+, I suppose I expect a little more in terms of value. Just a few blocks away, I could have eaten a far bigger meal for less at G.T. South's and the atmosphere would have been warmer and more inviting. I also would have been offered refills. The value, at least for me, was slightly below average. Pretty much every aspect of the meal screamed out to be somewhere in the middle range. However, the service was solid enough and the BBQ good enough that there's no way I could mark it below average. So, 3-stars sounds perfect. However, this is one 3-star rating that comes with a disclaimer - with 1-2 better BBQ joints within the mile, I can't picture myself visiting again unless I'm with someone who wants to stop. Black Diamond also offers catering for parties/events and they have a "pick up by the pan" option that would likely be good for families.

I've lived about five minutes from Black Diamond for almost three years. I always told myself I was going to go, but as time progressed, it just didn't happen. Finally, on a warm, breezy Saturday, I walked over and enjoyed a delicious BBQ lunch out on their patio. They have a nice outdoor seating area that's quiet, open, and filled with the delicious smell of smoking BBQ. It's a bit expensive, but you're paying for quality BBQ that's clearly taken a fair amount of time to create. This isn't a heat-and-serve; it's a slow process that makes the meat incredibly good. I ordered a BBQ on a bun option and I selected the pork on a bun dinner, which comes with one side. They have plenty of BBQ sauces to choose from, and the pulled pork was SO tasty. It was a big sandwich, hard to hold steadily with two hands. I ordered the mac and cheese as my side and was impressed with that as well. When I become more adventurous for meat, I plan on going back and ordering ribs or brisket because both of those meals look out of this world.

Black Diamond is a diamond of a BBQ place for Indy. Always well prepared, with good sauce and sides (greens!) to compliment your choice of meats. We had then cater a party and all I heard all evening was "the brisket is to die for" again and again. My favorite are the smoked wings. Wings are big and meaty not like some mini wings offered at the wing chains. Oh, ask for the cornbread.

So. Good. I've tried other rib tips in the city, but I always come back to Black Diamond. These are the most tender rib tips I've had here. Sometimes, they almost fall apart. The sauce is the perfect consistency. It coats every rib tip and it won't drop off should you feel the need to dip into it (guilty). The barbecue fairies must have sprinkled some of their magic dust into that sauce. I usually get the sweet one. I tried a spicy one years ago and hated it. It was spicy with no flavor, if that even makes sense. I'll stick with the sweet. The sides? Meh. The mac and cheese used to be amazing, but now it tastes like noodles and cheap, fake cheese. The baked beans are just okay. They're a bit tangy and sweet. I could take them or leave them. The gumbo? Don't do this to yourself. It wasn't at all what I expected. There's no way that a roux was made. If so, the consistency is way off. This was more like chicken soup with little to no flavor. No thanks. I'll keep going back for the rib tips and the pulled sandwiches.

It's decent for a BBQ place, ribs were a little dry but was kind of tasty.. Brisket was so so.. Sides were ok.. Kinda pricey for what you get.

I've had Black Diamond on my radar for a long time and my first visit didn't disappoint. The pulled pork was generous in portion and had an excellent flavor. The spicy BBQ had a good bite to it. The mac and cheese was OK (as were the beans). There are quite a number of options on the (somewhat confusing) menu board but it's BBQ...don't overthink it. Order a meat with a couple sides and boom. Good stuff and very nice people. Destiny's Child on a boom box was pretty awesome too. No frills. Will be back.

Seriously impressed by the service and friendliness. Rib Tips and the Smoked Chicken were some of the best I've had. Will definitely be back.

Recently moved from Chicago to Indy & have been in search for a decent "rib joint"...there aren't many BBQ spots to choose from & the ones I tried (which shall remain nameless) totally missed the mark. I drive up & down Binford everyday as a part of my commute to work & was always curious as to what they had to offer. I stopped in last night because I'd been jonesin for some tips. Hardly ever do I see anyone in there & wondered if I had set myself up for disappoinment. Well LO & BEHOLD!!!! I found a WINNER!!! Sauce was awesome, meat was smoky & tender, and the price was right! Great job Black Diamond BBQ! You just won me over : )

Generous portions. Good sauces. I think they would do better to cook their meat longer at a lower temperature because the meats didn't have much flavor on it's own.

Smoked wings that require absolutely no sauce!!!! Ever Tuesday and Thursday I know what's for dinner; meat anyway. I've yet to find any other BBQ spot that beats the wings here.

Caught my eye while driving on Binford. Glad it did! Awesome brisket and greens. Sweet and spicy sauces to go with it. Order a bit extra and take it home...if you want to share. Friendly staff too.

Best ribs and brisket in Indy. I come here at least Twice a month. The staff is very friendly.

It's pretty good. (Well, the potato salad isn't that great.) Small space, super friendly staff. Sauces are good -- even the mild has a nice kick. The lunch special is an excellent deal. They offer extensive catering services.

I came here after recommendations from two different people. The lady who waited on us was kind & wasn't impatient since it took me awhile to decide what to get. We ordered brisket & pulled chicken. The brisket is pretty good & tender, however it had a bit of fat on it which I think is disgusting. The pulled chicken was so delicious I almost slapped someone. The chicken was also smoked.

I pass this place every day on my way to and from work. Today is the day I didn't have the energy to cook dinner, so I decided to treat the fam to some Black Diamond BBQ for dinner. The young man at the counter was very friendly and accomodating -- even going to 'check the meats' to see which ones looked good for me. I took his suggestion on the rib tips and then opted for the brisket and chicken. Got the "hungry man dinner" (or something of the like) with 3 meats and 2 medium sides plus bread -- about $26 total (no drinks). The smell in the car on the way home was intoxicating! Smoky, sweet, meaty... I couldn't wait to get home and try what I got the fam for take out. Turns out, that is kind of where my intense imaginary BBQ love affair ended. Don't get me wrong--the brisket was SUPER tender with a good smoke and the chicken fell off the bone...yet the white meat of the chicken was dry?? The rib tips were pretty good and the sauces were good, too. However, the sides were below average at best. Based on another yelp review I tried the mac and cheese and baked beans. The mac and cheese was straight velveeta...no baked goodness, no love was felt by this self-professed mac and cheese guru. The baked beans were actually really really sweet tasting--which would have been fine if that is your thing-- but we like a smoky, deep BBQ bean instead. To each their own I guess. I would have killed for some cobbler to try, but it is only available on the weekends. Boooooo. Ask for the cornbread--it is in the back, not out like the loaves of bread they will give you if you don't ask. Cornbread was pretty darn good. Overall, we would go back for the brisket and skip the sides. I would also like to try their pulled pork. Maybe a lunch special is in our future.

What this placed lacked in ambiance it made up for in great barbecue! Was visiting Indy and found this place, ribs are off the hook!! Tender juicy and good smoke. You add the sauce I liked mild thought the sweet was too sweet for me. Cole slaw was creamy, mac and cheese to die for and I had a peach cobbler from heaven. My friend had the brisket and he liked it. If you have a taste for que go here. The owner was the nicest guy too! Wonderful smile!!!

For being a mom and pop establishment this place will shock you. The flavour is outstanding, whether referring to the pork or BBQ sauce you are in for a treat. The lunch special is the best value with a pulled pork sandwich, side and drink for around 7 dollars. You can't go wrong with the beans or Cole slaw and every Friday they bake different variations of cobblers. If you are hungry and don't mind spending a 20 dollar bill you can get a full rack of unbelievable tender ribs and two sides. I recommend Black Diamond to anyone looking for the 10$ lunch on the north side. Outstanding BBQ!

Love this place! Never had a bad experience. The brisket and ribs are to die for!! Mac and cheese is creamy and delicious and the greens are yum. After reading the reviews I apparently need to try the beans next time!

An excellent example of a clean, delicious BBQ joint. The smoked chicken wing dinner had 4 full wings and was fall-off-the-bone tender, and perfectly cooked. The slaw and green beans were clearly homemade and excellent. This is what a local joint should be.

  • Scott H.

Great ribs! I got a half slab dinner, which comes with two sides. The mac & cheese and green beans were average. The staff was very kind and they fixed my order quickly. They keep their restaurant immaculate. It was a little expensive, but BBQ generally costs more than your average meal.

Overall, this is delicious BBQ at a decent price. Pros: - Homemade BBQ sauce is great (I get one sweet and one hot) - Smoked wings are huge (each one is a full 3-piece wing) - Weekly lunch deals ($5 for sandwich combo) - Collard greens are very...baconey Cons: - They use a microwave to heat up some of the meats - Place is pretty tiny and patio needs some work Pro Tip: Ask for the cornbread instead of white/wheat bread (no extra charge) Bonus Pro Tip: I worked at this place in high school when it first opened as a custard (ice cream) shop. It was the best custard in Indy (better than Ritter's) but never gained enough momentum and went out of business. Its good to see the building went to good use, but R.I.P. Klein's Frozen Custard.

They're still there. The place is scrupulously clean, as clean as it was when it was new, both up front and in the men's room. Decor is a touch above strip mall restaurants. Some nice wall art. Neither sterile, nor cluttered. I'm not much on pork barbecue, so I got their chicken dinner, and a sampling of the shredded beef (brisket?) barbecue. One with mild sauce, and one with sweet sauce. I wanted to like it more, but it didn't wow me. Maybe I'm just too used to the broiled chicken with sides at Kroger. The chicken is pink like people say it's supposed to be. The beef bbq was also very tender. The cole slaw was great. The potato salad was different than the Kroger/Marsh potato salad that I'm used to, so I'm not sure how to rate it. For dine-in, food is served in styrofoam clam-shells, on a cafeteria tray, with plastic utensils. Service is friendly. The folks there are cheerful and nice. Address is Rucker Rd, which crosses Binford at that point. The restaurant is essentially on Binford, two blocks north of 62nd street, or one block south of 65th street. Turn West at the flashing light. The good service, ambience, and cleanliness make the value a solid 3 (out of 5) for me. However, if one were to rate just the food quality/quantity, I'd say it was a tad overpriced. But I'm okay with paying a little bit more to support the independent family restaurateur and a clean pleasant place to dine in.

My company brought this in for us for lunch today. I have never had this place before and live really close. OMG! It was TOTALLY AWESOME!!! The food is seriously excellent! I have had BBQ and not liked it. I LOVE this place!!!! The food was absolutely awesome!!! If you get a chance to go, do it. DO NOT listen to the negative comments!!! I'm hoping to be hungry again today so I can eat more of the baked beans and mac and cheese :) OMG, I saved this and forgot to add that the desserts are fabulous!!! I just tried the peach and apple cobblers!!! Absolutely awesome!!! I am sooooooo stuffed!!!

I like this place a ALOT. We came con recommendation from a friend and we were lucky to meet the owner the first time we went. The hungryman combo is excellent and I have to agree with Becky with the inconsistantcy but I like the flavoring a little bit better then GT's. Not saying anything bad about GT's that is. Rib tips are, pulled pork is great. Sometimes the chicken is dry, sometimes it's really juicy. They have home-made tasting bake goods and I loooove, the greens and mash potatossss.

I have passed by this place several time and dined at the Binford Cafe next door to it so I thought I would step out of my Hank's Smoked Brisket and Fat Dan's comfort zone for some Black Diamond Barbecue. I was highly dissapointed that they were out of Brisket so I tried the rib tips with hot barbecue sauce, mac & cheese and greens. For what I paid I felt like I got a really small portion of tips that had a great smokey taste to them but were over done or older. The last tip that I ate was on point though. It was very tender with great smoke flavor. The hot barbecue sauce was spicy and flavorful without being overly hot. The mac & cheese was just plain old mac & cheese. The greens were very good and exactly how I like them. I tried a friends baked beans because he kept raving about them and I will say they were pretty awesome with tons of brown sugar flavor. All in all they were A-OK but for what I spent there I would stick with my other two go to's. I may stop by again to see how the brisket stacks up though.

Hands down the best BBQ I've had in Indianapolis..Everything I've tried has been delicious, especially the the secret baked beans, and down home mac-n-cheese. I highly encourage you to give this place a try, and don't let the strip-mall location fool you, this is some grade A bbq! I usually get the Tip Dinner, with beans & mac-n-cheese. For the sauce I recommend getting a mix of their sweet & hot sauce. Enjoy!

  • Chris M.

The pulled pork and potato salad were decent. Not mind blowing but pretty good. The hot bbq sauce is actually pretty good. My main problem with BDBBQ is that I can go to a few other BBQ spots in town where the food is better (or at least the same quality), one gets more food, and you can pay about 1/3 to 1/2 the price.

The meat runs a definite second to Hanks. If it's only pork that you want, hang a right on 54th and get over to Locally Grown Gardens for the best hunk of pig ever. What Black Diamond does way better than Hanks and what really keeps me coming back are its sides. Mac n cheese, greens, and bbq beans are the best. FYI the beans are very sweet-- may be cloyingly so for some. Greens are 'healthy"-- i.e., not cooked in a tub of lard-- could actually stand for a tinge of ham or bacon, but add some malt vinegar and still very good. Mac n cheese is pretty damn near to perfect-- creamy creamy and not overly salty. The only added perfection is if you get a large size, take it home, put it in an oven-proof dish, add more shredded cheese on top, bake to get a nice crust on top. that would make any last meal proud. They also have these little mini pies n cobblers--- chess (similar to a sugar cream), sweet potato, peach, apple, pecan.... chess is very very good and my personal favorite when Im having a just-let-it-all-go-and-calories-be-damned day. 'Hungry Man's Combo' is a good deal-- pick 3 meats and 2 medium sides for a little over $20. Plenty for two and a good pickup on your way north to a Symphony on the Prairie concert if you're coming up from the southside or dwtn or even from Broad Ripple. But, call in your order ahead or be prepared to wait at least 10-15 minutes for them to fill it. Very nice people, they just tend to move a little 'i'm-in-no-rush" slow kind of way. There is a little shop next door with all kinds of Indiana memorabilia that you can browse as you're waiting for your order to be ready. Now, about that meat. Mainly, because it's inconsistent. Cuts are uneven and smokiness generally not as deep. Brisket is always fattier and larger/loosier-grain. This makes slicing it cleanly difficult as well. So you end up just getting non-elegant hunks. Ribs are like half rib with tips attached, and the amt of meat on each varies greatly. Flavor-- not sure if it's the type of wood used, the temperature, or the time-- but the smoke essence is never as "rich". However the rub-crust on the tips is very nice on a good day. You do still feel as though you are getting the real thing and not boiled meat that is then thrown into the oven and basted with a liquid smoke mix. Turkey legs are pretty good when the State Fair is still 6 months away, but chicken quarters tend to be dried out and smokiness not as prominent as the thicker turkey legs for some reason or another. Pulled pork is either moist yet boarding on too-greasy, or, dry and too porky-tasting. if you know what I mean. Again-- Locally Grown Gardens is worth the extra 2 more miles down for this. As others have mentioned, they offer 3 homemade sauces-- mild, spicy, sweet. I would mix the mild and spicy ones. the sweet one does have an interesting tamarind-ish flavor, but not one I particularly care for.

I really wanted to think this place would ge good. I wanted to support a small business instead of a chain restaraunt. My family and I pulled up on an early Saturday afternoon to find the smoke billowing from the rear of the establishment. The only think is, I couldn't smell the smoke. No pecan, no hickory. Inside the tiny restaraunt, the menu hangs over the counter as patrons must navigate their way through the jam packed dining area. I ordered a sliced brisket sandwich, baked beans, and potato salad. The kids had pulled pork sandwiches and my wife had the veggie plate. The bad sign was when I watched them put plates of brisket into the microwave. Then the pork. I knew this was not going to be good. This made the meat ridiculously hot and shriveled up some. The sliced brisket was tasteless. No flavor at all. That must be why they serve or drown the meats in sauces. It was dried out and no telling when it was cooked as Chef Mike cooked it for them. Here is my laundry list of issues: -The pulled pork was tasteless and dried out. -Baked beans were a cup of brown sugar with some beans in it. Way too sweet. - Potato salad appeared to be frozen and thawed out. WAY too much dill. Tasted more like a pickle salad even though I like pickles in my potato salad. - Green beans tasted like salt and vinegar and were overwhelming. - No pickles and onions offered or available. - Coke machine mixtures were off so I got a cup of syrup instead of root beer. But the tea was behind the counter so heads up. - Slow jams didn't really add to the experience. Mac and cheese was the only saving grace. Creamy and not too salty. But they need a whole lot more than that. Still haven't found decent bbq in this city.

I've been back several times since my first review, and just love them. My husband and I will often share the ribs and chicken combo with two sides, which is more than enough for the two of us. I highly recommend you ask for both the sweet and the spicy sauces, they'll ladle them both, and the melding of the flavors is just right. The baked beans have a great smokiness, and I think there's some molasses in there for more depth of flavor. Just love them!
