We stopped by on a whim and were pleasantly surprised by the experience! The meals were accompanied by a generous assortment of sides and pickles, all of which were fresh and flavorful. Our entrees arrived within minutes and the wait staff was attentive without being distracting. We are not experts on Korean food, but the entrees had excellent flavor and generous portions. Next time we pass through the area, we will make it a point to stop again.

Well, not so good. AYCE bbq is way too expensive for its value. The service was good, but really, it's way too expensive.

Korean BBQ in Indianapolis (*footwork*)!!! The man and I visited on Sunday for some KBBQ and it didn't disappoint. We had a sampler platter which included pork, short rib, bulgogi, and chicken, and literally ~10 sides, including kimchi soup and rice bowls. The food was good, the customer service was okay, but the weirdest thing was, our server automatically added an 18% tip onto our bill. Weird right? I've seen automatic gratuity added for parties of 5/6/7/8+, but two people?!?! Not sure where they do that at, but I really wondered if this was standard operating procedure or something else at work? (inquiring minds DO want to know) I'll be back because I absolutely love KBBQ and this is one of the few spots in town, we'll see how it goes next time.

So the new staff and direction this place has taken is amazing! I am a Mamma's fan but Bando's is now my favorite stop. They are so friendly now and I couldn't believe how yummy the food has gotten. Their kimchi and side dishes alone are worth the trip but the fact that they can make a fine Ddok boki as well....heaven!!! Give them another shot you won't be disappointed. *hugs Bando's* love them.

I'm not sure what it is about this place...but it's just OK. The food doesn't' having me running back and I hated my bulgogi the last two times I've had it. It was tough and chewy. The service is spot on though and the people are friendly. Each to their own...

Wow. I'm hoping for their sake that I caught them on a bad day, but that day was so bad I'll never be back. I'll summarize. The staff exuded an attitude of "stupid white boy. Why did you come here and waste my time with your ignorance?" How dare I bother them with my non-korean business? This is the only time in my life I have gone to a sit-down restaurant and refused to leave a tip of any kind. Forget this place. Go to Mama's around the corner.

Me and my family come here every week. We love their food. We used to be regulars at Mama's (grown and raised there) but we started coming here regularly. Their sides are good. Not engrossed in MSG, and always fresh. The Kahl Bee is really good too and they also have specials sometimes. Kahl Bee Tang, and Potato Soup, and lots other. The waitress is like an aunt to me and the owner is like a grandma. We been coming here weekly for over a year and we're not stopping anytime soon. :)

The lunch be bim bop was pretty good. It had just the right amount of spice for my taste. The banchan were decent, maybe a bit on the skimpy side. The prices are excellent here, and the lunch was a great value I think. Plus one star for that. Lot of cooking tables here but not all of them have hoods, how does that work lol wut.

My mom is Korean, not that makes me an expert... but just thought to throw that in there. So far this is my favorite Korean restaurant as far as actual food goes. I used to go to mama's but now we go here. It's a bit pricey but Korean restaurants tend to be around here. Can't wait to go again! Also call and ask but some nights they do have a all you can eat Korean BBQ even though I don't think they advertise it very well.

I heard Bando's under new management so I decided to revisit this establishment with my lunch date after an unimpressive meal 10 years prior. A lot has changed. No more spotty service or lackluster food. I was debating between yuk gae jang (shredded beef in spicy broth) or kimchi jigae (stew) since those are my main go to. I went with the yuk gae jang spicy enough to clear my sinuses. The broth was pungent and flavorful. My date had some kind of fish eggs (I mean the whole roe sack) in broth. Both were equally delicious served with a bowl of rice and a nice spread of banchan (mini dishes). Refills are complimentary, so eat up! Each mini dish had a unique flavor ranging from sesame oil, spicy, savory, sweet, crunchy, sour, UMAMI....basically everything to stimulate your tastebuds. I couldn't help but overhear the booth behind us talking about her foreign exchange students recommending her to this place. Those 2 definitely enjoyed their meal and even agreed to come back next week. Yes, the chefs certainly didn't skimp on ingredients or time in preparing each individual meal. While it may not be the most pocket-friendly lunch for 2 at a tad bit over $30, it left us both satisfied. Just remember you're paying for quality and a dang good tastes like homemade meal.

I can't wait to try this place...cooking with charcoal is the best and only way to go for korean BBQ...don't meet me thier beat me their. .4 just because of Charcoal cooking...

Let me start by saying, I usually am not a big fan of having to cook my own food. Fondue, not my thing. Build your own burger, no thanks. So going in with that mindset, I wasn't that excited. We sat down as a larger group and the waitress came to turn on the burners for the BBQ. I was freezing in there, but I imagine they keep it cooler because of the BBQ pit in the table. My boyfriend then did me the service of ordering for me, which was nice because I didn't really know what anything is. Then I made him cook everything! The food is good. The gyoza was delicious and the bulgogi was very yummy too! The only downer is that my clothes smelled of fried food for a long time :(

After living in Seoul for a year, I learned to appreciate good Korean food. Very few restaurants outside of LA or NYC are at that level, but my meal at Bando was very good and exceeded my expectations.

I've been coming to Bando for years. This is authentic Korean. You can do the DIY BBQ or you can order the cooked versions of the same (as well as many other dishes). I usually come for lunch so the BBQ is not really an option (time constraints). The lunch menu is huge and reasonably priced. My favorite Korean food (in general) has always been the spicy soups. Bando has 4 or 5 variations of these and I never come away disappointed (or without a sweat-stained napkin). The panchan (little side dishes) are innumerable (there were at least 4 versions of kim chi) and refills are frequent. Service is hit-or-miss. It all depends on who you get as your server.

Food was bland and not flavorful at all. Ordered chicken sauté, dol sot bibimbap, and some bbq. All of it was so unappealing and not to mention expensive! Not worth it! Head over to Mamas down the road for much better food!

I was visiting Indianapolis and was craving Korean food so I yelped it and found this place. I wanted to order samgyupsal (pork belly) and a stew so that my boyfriend and I could share. Unfortunately, they wouldn't allow us to order meat to be cooked on the grill unless we got two orders. We decided to go with the kalbi and doenjangjjigae. The food was good, but it was a little pricey.

Service and food at Bando is exactly like service in Korea except they have a massive menu. Everything about this place exudes authenticity, down to the dishes. If you get boring food like dolsot or bulgogi, you are not going to be blown away. Have some seafood or the mix grill BBQ. The soups are also excellent. I like all of the Korean places within 40 miles of Indy, but Bando has definitely become my go-to, especially for barbecue, as they have charcoal instead of electric, which seasons the meat perfectly. Bando has an extensive menu with a ton of food. I try to have something new each time I go (despite the fact that their all you can eat BBQ is actually a decent price and the meat is excellent, especially chadol/brisket and kalbi or the seasoned pork). I have noticed that some people do not understand that there are multiple ways to serve kalbi and they serve theirs more traditional, not LA/lateral axis, so there will not be bones. We go often enough that the server offers us off menu items. I find that the more enthuastiac you are, the more likely you are to get things like this.

We stopped here for lunch on Memorial Day. We grilled Kalbi(two small strips) and pork belly (four thin slices). The meat tasted good but the portions were small, especially Kalbi (I do not recommend ordering) There were several side dishes, including baked eggs and tofu stew. The service was okay. There was only one server but he managed to satisfy our request.

Love the quality of the meat. It is our go to place for all you can eat for Korean food. The owners & waiters are all very nice. They keep the meat coming, and always ask if you want more meat. The side dishes are also plenty of variety & changes every time we are there. The meat & food is better than Mama's & at a cheaper price too. Definitely the best Korean restaurant in Indy.

Charcoal used for the Korean BBQ gives off a nice smokey addition to the meat. I can't say I have ever been to a Korean BBQ place that didn't just have us cook on an electric grill of some sort, so the charcoal was definitely a nice touch. We did not have any Korean speaking individuals in our party, but I still felt that the server was very pleasant. The side dishes were abundant & delicious. Give it a try if you are in the area. It definitely hit the spot for us & we'll be back soon enough!

We are regulars at the other Korean place down the road. The service there has been waning and we thought we'd check out Bando. I mean, can one have too many delicious restaurant opportunities? We walked into an empty restaurant for a Saturday lunch. Our server was a bit standoffish, but we apparently interrupted her morning routine as she sat down at a nearby table and finished putting her face on. She then unpacked her Marlboros and filled her cigarette case. She brought us a couple of sodas and took our order. We didn't see her again until the food came out - virtually at the same time. We started with the Assorted Tempura, which is about half the portion size of what we are used to. It also lacked variety. However, the shrimp were really good and the shrimp tasted super sweet and fresh. A Dolsot Bi Bim Bop and Kimchi/Pork Saute hit the table shortly after the tempura arrived. Upon first inspection, the portion size was again much smaller than expected. The stone pot was also not nearly hot enough to provide the crispy rice bits that are so desired in this particular dish. 1/3 of the plate with the Kimchi/Pork Saute consisted of four large, cold chunks of tofu. Strange. Both entrees were also very, very greasy and left a film in our mouths and on our lips. We did get about 8 banchan dishes and they were okay. The flavors all seemed to be very one note. The kimchi we received was the root end of the cabbage and it was mostly inedible. We saw our server for a third and final time when she brought the check. Food wise, nothing was really delicious. Portions were small. We left unsatisfied. The service was terrible. The bathrooms are filthy and the trip provides and unwanted peek into the kitchen. If we'd have used the restroom first, we probably wouldn't have ended up eating there.

Went here for the first time. Was very impressed by both the food and the service. Waiter and waitress were very attentive. Side dishes were given first to hold us by and were often replaced. The food was delicious and brought out very quickly. This was a nice change in service and good quality compared to mamas - both in Indy and bloomington. Only downside is the food portions were a bit small for a dinner meal.

I came here on a Tuesday night and it was pretty dead. Aside from a small group of patrons who were presumably friends with the owner. The food and service was great except the dinner menu pricing is way out of desirable price range. With most appetizers in the $7-9 range and entrees starting at $14.99, this is not a place most people could afford on a semi-regular basis. There are no dinner specials in the $8-10 range. A price drop is needed, otherwise these restaurants will fail to attract and retain new customers. I love Korean food and I wish the genre would make a breakthrough in the Indy market. Aside from MaMa's up the road there isn't a whole lot of choice or competition for Korean around here. This place just needs to make the menu more affordable to people, and it will take off! I had the Chau-Chau, at $14.99. And while this is potentially a large enough portion for 2 persons, I would recommend that the price be lowered to $8.99 with a smaller portion. That's all! The taste was a bit salty, but overall very good.

Service is lackluster, but the food is great. Must try the Soon Do Bu, and the Dolsot Bibimbap. This place is frequented by those in the Korean community, so the food has to be good, and it is.

My mother and father in law live in Indy, and this is one of the usual spots they take me husband and I to eat when we're in town. It helps to have an intimidating Korean woman with you when you eat at this restaurant, the mother-in-law. The customer service just seems to be bumped a bit when she's around ;) We usually just get our kbbq on, leaving the place smelling like meat which is fine by me. The variety of ban chan is great, and your servers usually (or should at least) refills whatever you munch to death. Faves: fish cake, cucumber kim chi, and the shredded raddish. This place is one of Indy's few gems. Be prepared to open up your wallet! Definitely check it out if you're in the mood for Korean food :)

It's good! I go here before going to Karaoke next door! Highly recommend the bbq rather than the other dishes. Side dishes are all right. People are nice. :) I usually go to Mama's if I'm not doing karaoke though.

Bando has the best dang jang chigae out of any of the Korean restaurants in Indy but the owner is kind of an ice woman. If you want good food and won't be offended by a "stand off'ish" waitress/owner, I recommend it.

  • K S.

Summary: Great food! One of best Champong and Soon Doo Boo Chigae I've had. Also great Korean side dishes. But... so so customer service (not really friendly at all, not customer service focused). 4-star+ place if service was excellent. They don't even have a copy of menu you can take with, for take-out orders. Reading others' review, poor service seems to be a common theme here. I shlInterior is pretty outdated and not really inviting. Time: Lunch time. Looking at dinner price, I'd not go there for dinner, as prices were very high. Food tried: Champong (Spicy seafood noodle soup) and Soon Doo Boo Chigae (Tofu Chigae). Did not try BBQ.

It's been a while since I've been to one of the local Korean restaurants (the other one is Mama's House, further up the street). My favorite dish is Dolsot Bi Bim Bap. It costs a little more than regular Bi Bim Bap. "Dolsot" means it's served in a hot stone bowl, but you still get about 10 side dishes each served in their own little bowl. I like the variety. The big stone bowl with the main course is very hot, and I suppose it's supposed to do some of the cooking. The food will get hotter as it sits in the bowl. And if you stir it occasionally the rice won't stick to the sides of the bowl. It has rice, meat, veggies, leafy greens, noodles, and some sauce. The staff was different than when I went about a year ago, so they might have new owners. Every table has an electric grill built in, and an exhaust hood over it. But I've never tried the grill-your-own dishes. It was a little cleaner than I remember it, but the decor seems to be the same. The ambience/decor is not going to impress anyone, but it's suitable for wife/gf/inlaws/boss. The food impresses though. There were both Asian and Caucasian customers. Waitress/hostess was Korean. Last I checked, they also prepare the food for the Maru Studio karaoke place a couple doors down.

Authenticity is what you get here. Step out of your comfort zone and get something not bbq'ed or you don't cook on the table grill. The sides you get with the meals are enough to fill you up.

Bando is located down the street from Ma Ma's House, the other Korean BBQ joint. Even though I prefer going to Ma Ma's House to get my Korean fix, Bando has some perks. Their customer service is a tad bit better than Ma Ma's House. The waitress/owner is pretty cool, she likes to make small talk with her customers and she actually check back on you. They also offer one of my favorite Korean food, the Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup(Champong). You get a ginormous bowl of seafood, meat, vegetables, and thick al dente noodles in a spicy broth. One of my favorite part about Korean food is the sides. The sides here are not always fresh sometimes they look like they have been out for hours. However, I love love the green leaf lettuce tossed in their tangy and spicy dressing. It's so good and addicting! Every meals comes with an egg soup, another reason why I like Bando. For the DIY BBQ, I feel like you get a lot more meat than Ma Ma's House but the marinade is definitely not as good as Ma Ma's. I like ordering the kalbee and spicy pork to BBQ because they are more fatty hence more flavor. I feel like I only come to Bando for specific item, Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup or the spicy lettuce, and they are worth the trip!

Food good, location decent, but waitresses are rude and unprofessional. We told her some of our party was vegetarians she said she understood. We asked about some kind of pancake omelette and was told it was veggies only, later while they were eating it they spotted squid in it. She informed us that that's seafood and not meat! WTH?! What part of vegetarian didn't she understand?! Well we asked for it to be remade and she didn't seem to happy about it. We spent $400 for party of 13! Will never be back!

The few times I've been here, it's always been at the request of my Japanese business colleagues. I visited last night for the first time in a few years and I had forgotten how good this place was. I've visited many of the fairly good Korean places around the Chicago area, but I think Bando may actually be my favorite. I would probably say that their food is not truely authentic Korean and maybe that's why I favor Bando. It is probably somewhat in the direction of the Yakiniku type places you can find in Japan with the bonus that you get all the freshly made traditional side dishes to snack on with your beer. I ordered the Bando special dinner and it included the tender and perfectly marinated bone-in short rib along with an interesting ensemble of tempura.

Never wrote a review before but feel compelled. My kids 22 and 19 are Crazy about the Korean culture, they listen to K-pop and watch Korean dramas on Netflix. So it is my youngest birthday and they want go to a Korean restaurant . I go online read the reviews and in spite of some references to poor service I pick Bando. It takes a while for them to take our order but the food was delicious. We got the cow tongue, bulgogi and beef ribs. Good food and cooking the meat on the barbecue was interactive and fun. The side dishes were interesting to someone who has never had Korean before. The service was slow but not totally anoying, My water ran out, it never got refilled. The issues really started when the meal ended. We waited almost 30 minutes for our check--even moving to stand next to the register at one point to kind of hurry the waitress but to no avail. While waiting my daughter suddenly stood up from the table with a shriek, there was a small cockroach crawling across the surface of the table. A Korean woman at the table next to us killed the bug but that was enough for my daughter who left right afterward. We weren't going to say anything to the woman who finally checked us out but the Korean woman who killed the bug stepped in and told the server about the roach. After another 10 minute wait we were given a $20 gift card for tomorrow evening with the promise of even more of a discount if we came back. Not sure if we'll take them up on that offer. While we were waiting for the check another couple told the server they had waited too long and left the restaurant because their orders had never been taken. The waitress that was working seemed to be the only server there and she was working hard but one waitress to 35 patrons is going to make service slow regardless of how hard working you are. Moral of the story--great food doesn't make up for a bad experience.

Pretty good Korean BBQ considering this place is in Indiana. The kimchi is good, and the marinate for bulgogi and kalbi is good, can't complain. Only complaint is the slow and bad service, but that is to be expected at a Korean restaurant.

I came here with my best friend when she was fresh off the plane from a year in Korea (well, almost fresh), so I had the advantage of having someone to tell me what to order. I already knew what I wanted, though--I absolutely had to try this bibimbap concoction that Maggie had been raving about. And it was good, but not quite as celestial as I'd imagined from Maggie's hosannahs. I think one issue might have been that it was kind of lukewarm when they brought it out, so it got cold a lot faster than it should have, and I don't think bibimbap is meant to be eaten cold. But even aside from that, the flavor was just somehow more bland than what I'd imagined. I doused it liberally with that spicy red sauce, but it was still kind of meh. The bulgogi, however, was amazing. If you're a meat eater, I really recommend you try this. It's very thin strips of beef with some kind of magical combination of seasonings and very compatible with the Western palate. Be careful with it, though--I literally choked on mine. Time slowed down as I watched my friends' faces fall from laughter to panic when they saw me make the international choking sign. Eventually I had to reach into my throat and pull out the food--gross, but true. Anyway, the moral of the story is to treat bulgogi with caution. Bando is a good Korean restaurant, but not the best in the city, in my opinion.
