Everything here is al carte, so you are able to have a decent meal at a good price. Their tacos are the biggest draw here, and there's is a reason for it. Forget your average beef and cheese, this place draws you in with their specialty simmered meats that are then paired with cilantro, pineapple, pickled onions and more. Because each taco is an individual order, you don't have to settle for just one choice. Go ahead and pair your choice with one of their specialty margaritas (I like the Bakersfield) you are set!

I am obsessed with Bakersfield. Ask anyone who knows me. Bakersfield is where I fell in love with the fish taco and margaritas. Now that I've discovered the spicy margarita I fear I will be spending even more of my money here. All of the tacos are delicious and the guacamole is the best in Indy. If you come at peak time, especially on a weekend, be prepared to wait up to 2 hours. Don't worry, there's plenty to drink while you wait and they will give you a courtesy call if you decide to leave and explore Mass Ave.

I like the margaritas more than the food...I'd do chips and guacamole over the tacos. I've tried them all, so I guess if I had to choose I'd say order the fish and the pastor.

My brother just moved to Indy from Boston and going into the trip I had low lowwwww expectations for food. Thankfully I was pleasantly surprised. Indy has a great food scene and this place topped my list. We got an assortment of tacos and split a pitcher of margs. Mmmm. They have a great outdoor patio. Would love to see what this place is like on a weekend night. If you like spicy make sure to get a side of their house pickled jalapeños. Would it be wrong to visit my brother just to eat tacos? I don't think so.

I read some other reviews on here about this place. Mostly positive. The so-so reviews mention either being disappointed with the food, (????????), or the hipster vibe. The food will bring me back. I haven't had the "luxury" of living in CA, but I know what I like and what I don't. This is good food. Yeah, if you want an app and 4 taco's it will get a little pricey compared to a typical tex-mex place, but this is GOOD food. Fresh, tasty, different. My wife and I, very late 40's sat at the bar, we are DEF NOT HIP!!!! There were 4 guys working the bar. ALL 4 checked on us multiple times, multiple, in a friendly easy going manner. We NEVER felt out of place, I will make a point of coming back here again and again. The drinks are great, the food unique, the service remarkable, why would you not want to come here???

Not sure what to order? The correct answer is one of everything! We ordered all nine tacos this weekend and I wasn't disappointed with a single one! The Mole, Pastor and Short Rib were my personal favorites. We went on a Sunday around noon and were seated immediately. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. I'm already plotting when I can make it back for more tacos!

Delicious and unique. A bit pricey but worth it. Be sure to go early or later to avoid the crowds. Open late and they serve food till closing on midnight!

Bakersfield is one of my favorite spots in Indianapolis. The food is always top notch and I love the a la carte aspect. My favorite taco is most definitely the fish taco...it's delicious. I also enjoy the queso...it's not your typical queso and is definitely a crowd pleaser. The pricing is reasonable and if you grab an appetizer you will probably only need 2 tacos per person. I would say I normally leave there having spent $20...and it's always been well worth it! My only complaint is how crowded it always seems to be! Even during the week you'll find a wait, but I haven't been disappointed yet.

Great place to grab a beer in the summer. The tacos are notorious for being small, but the other menu options are really good and filling. Cool atmosphere and very friendly serving staff.

Delicious tacos and great bartenders. That's a great combination. Can get crowded quickly.

Great tacos but always a long wait. Unless you get here on a weekday afternoon you will have to wait for up to 2 hours for a seat. The decor inside is cowboy/western themed and the tacos are fantastic but I just wish it was easier to get a table.

Without fail, I always have to get my own napkins. Love the atmosphere and the food is delicious, just can't justify the cost as often as I would like.

Called to make a lunch reservation. Was told there wasn't a wait so we wouldn't need one. Showed up an hour later. 75 minute wait. Sad face.

Seriously my favorite place in Indy. Came in tonight and it was packed, still didn't wait more than 10 minutes for our food and drinks. Love this place!!

So good. Just eat here. See for yourself. Ruby did such a wonderful job taking care we were taken care of. She and the food are more than enough reason to return.

The faux hipsters that inhabited the seated bench area were savage. My female friends were very intoxicated and had left the exit door slightly open while they talked with people outside, asking for directions. Without so much as a please, the faux hipsters repeatedly yelled "SHUT THE F'ING DOORS" because a slight breeze had made them "too cool" for just a moment. I was just astonished that anyone would yell at a group of girls like that with such hostility. Other experiences here have been satisfactory but this leaves such a bad taste in my mouth.

First stop after landing at IND was my new favorite texmex spot in indy. I usually don't eat texmex outside of California or Texas but, based on the yelp reviews I thought I should try it out! The service was truly commendable for a bar style restaurant. Chips and salsa were quality, tacos were really good, and I don't know how to articulate the quality of the margaritas! I loved them. Although they were more expensive than any margarita I've had in DC, they were good. My cousin also enjoyed everything with the exception of the guacamole. She said the chunks of avocado were too big. But, that will not keep either of us from returning next time I'm home!

I originally steered clear of Bakersfield because it was always so packed because it was the trendy place to go on Mass Ave. I finally gave into my curiosity and am glad that I did. I will say they are my favorite place for fish tacos in Indianapolis. Their chips and guac are really good and their margaritas are pretty decent. The only thing that I wasn't impressed with was the queso, which comes in a skillet and is a bit rubbery. That is truly the only thing that I have had that I didn't like at Bakersfield. The atmosphere is trendy. There aren't very many seating options and getting a table on a Friday or Saturday night usually comes with a decent wait. They do take your cell number so potentially you could wander somewhere else on Mass Ave while you are waiting for your table. The service is great, even when they are busy and your food comes out pretty quickly after ordered. Give into the trend and go try it out, but maybe on a weekday night if you don't feel like waiting for a table. Oh...and order the fish tacos, you won't regret it!

Bakersfield has quickly become a Mass Ave favorite of ours. Despite a fairly large sized dining/bar area (including overflow section downstairs), get there early or you may be waiting a while. Bakersfield had been described to us by a friend as a tequila bar. Not being tequila drinkers, we initially steered clear. However, it is so much more than that. They do have a full bar including a good beer and wine selection. The food here is superb. They specialize in tacos and tortas. We typically start with the chips and salsa (they have a couple different salsas which are amazing), followed by mixing and matching from the taco menu. My favorites are the pastor and the fish tacos. We did try the queso once, but the consistency was very strange, almost like a hummus. The menu is limited, but they know what they do and do it well. The prices are reasonable for Mass Ave and the service is always prompt and friendly. If you find yourself in the neighborhood, I would recommend giving Bakersfield a try.

Very impressed with this place. Reserved a table in their wine cellar and the ambiance was Three Musketeers meets Hangover. Started the night with tequila shots and tacos. Enjoyed the guacamole and the wide beer selection. Bigger portions would be my only request!

Great margaritas. Like, they have someone just squeezing limes all day great. $6. $2 Das Boots of PBR for the cheap and/or hipper crowd. Great, great service, whether at the bar or at a table. Madison is the cutest barkeep in the world. FOUR DOLLARS FOR A TACO? You are literally out of your mind, Bakersfield. Street tacos shouldn't be messed with. 4 out of 5 west coasters agree, the cheaper the taco is from a stand where no one speaks English, the better. Yeah, I mean, these are GOOD tacos but they are also SMALL tacos. I am 5'6" and they are about the size of my palm. Gourmet, schmoremet, there's no way you could fill up here without going broke. Bakersfield is trying to exhibit that "Bakersfield, CA" vibe, where it falls short and ends up seeming like the gift shop to a Western Film museum. I would probably kill myself if I was forced to listen to nothing but Johnny Cash all day. It's also a chain restaurant. The crowd is bro-licious on the weekends. Actually, just avoid going on the weekends at all costs unless you like feeling like a sardine. Make a taco fiesta for yourself at home, and THEN come drink here.

Authentic Mexican food finally! A great find. Good place to hangout after work too. Under 21 allowed.

Aye Dios Mio!! Tequila for Meee Oh! So, let me start by saying, I heard some complaints about the Rita's over here (mostly noting they aren't authentic...really) and I for one think they are all unfounded! Drunken dabauchery! This place makes a wonderful margarita. Although, the salt was a tad bit too much for my taste buds after three drinks, my taste buds were doing the Tango. Not only was it refreshing to actually have a nice margarita made (rare find) it was reasonably priced as well. I went on a night that may have been a little too crowded. There were literally people hanging on the sidewalk because there just was not enough space inside. This created a problem with ordering food, however I was starving and looking at everyone's plate - what was coming out of the kitchen was just ahmazing! The staff was very friendly, and had pretty laidback hipster vibes. The restrooms were in somewhat of an odd location however, very clean and actually had a nice mirror (ladies). The bar itself is shaped like a 'U" and if you want to be a bit more chill away from the center, there's more space available to relax. They have a nice variation of alcohol, and usually offer lots of specials throughout the week. The only issue I had coming to Bakersfield was the clientele that one night. I am Afro American, Dutch, Irish, and Native American and wore my natural hair out. I seemed more like a commodity than another customer :( four people asked to touch my hair and one girl asked to touch my skin..then said I look like her daughter if she had a baby with Will Smith... O. K.. Mass. Ave. can be a little bit behind the times just an FYI if you have a colorful personality. Overall: Get ready for some draanks, leave the maracas at home! :) xoxo

I'd like to say the food was great but we don't know because we never got to eat. It was busy which was expected and we were told 15-20. After 25 minutes I asked how much longer and was told another 1/2 Hour. Clearly it's a popular place but there were literally 15 tables with people who had eaten and were chatting. Isn't it the servers job to try and move these people also along? We will probably try again but the first experience was not a good one.

  • Jake M.

I think Bakersfield needs a few new tricks, new menu items, new drink specials, it's consistently good but honestly I'm getting bored of it. It's so packed all the time it's kinda obnoxious.

  • Lily C.

Low key, friendly staff, great tacos, cheap beer, and an awesome collection of whiskey. I don't necessarily get the connection with the Western/cowboy vibe and Mexican menu, but they serve PBR in a boot and offer $3 shots of the day - so what's to complain? Bakersfield has become my go-to spot in Indy and always the first spot I hit once I land. P.S. Get the guacamole. Freshly made and huge chunks of avocado!

Bakersfield has the best fish tacos that I have ever had. Very fresh and delicious. The prices are pretty good, but by the time you get a couple of tacos + drinks + maybe some chips to share, it evens out to be about what you would spend anywhere else on Mass Ave. The margaritas are OK. I have heard a lot of people rave about them, but I am not a huge fan. I don't necessarily have the best taste in margaritas, though. I would take a mango slushy with a splash of tequila over a boozed up fancy pants mason jar of spirits any day. I definitely recommend checking this place out if you haven't already. It's worth a try. If you want to beat the crowds, go on a weeknight.

I've put off going to Bakersfield for too long. Sure, every time I 'try' to there would be a wait, or I wasn't in the mood for for carne asada... or whatever it was. But the time finally came, and folks: IT WAS FANTASTIC. The ambiance is very saloon-like; rough-cut wood with tin-roof decor, outlaw county coming through the tweeters. I like it. A lot. They have a solid five or six taps, with shelves of craft tequila and Kentucky bourbon. We order: I get the Mole Taco with a side of tortillas and queso. The pickled onions were unique and tasty - the queso was unrefined and cheese-like, just the way I take it. The misses got the short-rib torta, which was dynamite. I was happy all around. Now, I may be characterized as one of these, urban, hipster-cowboys - yes, I wear python skin boots and sport a fitted black stetson, (bare with me), but this place just feels authentic. I could see myself becoming a regular here. I tip my hat to you, Bakersfield.

I realize I'm in the (vast) minority here, but this is a very "meh" for me. A) Pretentious. B) Overpriced. C) Mediocre. Long story short, I'll be spending my money elsewhere. I'm neither young nor hipster enough to spend my time here.

My absolute favorite place to eat in Indy! The tacos are amazing and the margaritas are out of this world. My boyfriend is a server here so maybe I'm a little biased, but if you're looking for a place to eat downtown or on Mass ave, this is the place to be. It can get pretty crowded in the evenings (especially on Friday/Saturday) so if you've got a big group, you may want to get a reservation. Excellent place for a drink in the summer - their new patio edition is on point!

Just moved to Indianapolis a few weeks ago. Having grown up in southern California, my wife and I were craving some Mexican food. We were told to check out Bakersfield Mass Ave by a few people. It was packed when we got there so we stood at one of the outside tables while we waited for our seats. We started off with some margaritas and chips w/ guac. We were very impressed, great margaritas and the guac was better than the others that we've tried in Indy. Once our main meals came out we were quite disappointed. Taste was just Ok compared to the Mexican food that we're used to. The portions were also extremely small for the price! How could someone be satisfied with one order? You would have to order two meals a person to actually feel somewhat full. Depending on drink specials, we might be back for the margaritas and guac while on our way to eat somewhere else, but I doubt we'll actually eat dinner here again.

I, myself used to be a bartender here but made the conscientious decision to relocate to the Pacific Northwest. I literally have dreams every other week about their amazing and super fresh margaritas, guacamole, salsas, tacos, Tortas and salads. Insider secret: Mix the fish taco into the Johnny salad....oh mahhh ggaawwddd so good. I love you and miss you so much Bakersfield...open a spot in Portland and I promise you will be a city favorite. Xoxo

Went here for a quick bite before taking in a show on Mass Ave. I've heard great things about this place but overall I was in no way impressed. I've been to a lot of taquerias and this one wasn't the best. I got a variety of 3 tacos and they were good but they were so tiny. I got 3 tiny tacos, my date got 3, some guac & chips and 2 cheap beers and we spent almost $50 on that. I could have gone to an authentic Mexican joint for some awesome tacos and spent a fraction of that cost. It was so incredibly loud in there that a conversation couldn't be carried on. There were tables and groups of very young 20 somethings with their pitchers of drinks, the table behind us even had people standing on their table top dancing. That's so unsafe, unsanitary and unnecessary for 5:30pm on a Wednesday night! I would think a manager would address the behavior with them as there were many regular tables dining, but nobody did anything. Our waitress seemed to be friends with them and joined their good time. The guac tasted good but overall I doubt I go back here. Had to go to McDonalds after to feel full.

Had Bakersfield Mass been open just a few weeks longer, I'm certain it would have easily made it into the recent Top 25 Places to Eat article in this month's Indianapolis Monthly. The first time I visited was after work on a weeknight. The crowd was what I expected: decent mix of people of all ages popping in on their way home from work. Energetic atmosphere and almost full, yet no wait when I arrived for a table. Fast forward to last weekend. I stopped in about 2 in the morning after going out with friends. Apparently my group wasn't the only one who decided some damn good tacos and $2 PBR's were perfectly acceptable as we walked home from a local watering hole where we had been partaking in adult beverages most of the evening. The crowd was the same mix of ages, all amped up from a night on the town and getting as many drinks in before someone shouted LAST CALL. I've never seen a bartender so busy trying to keep up with the orders, and the two behind the bar could barely keep up. The tacos are small but filling. I've found that two chicken mole tacos and a boot full of beer makes a great dinner. That's right.. get there early enough and your beer will come in a glass shaped like a boot. Give this place a try, but prepared for a wait.. even at 3am.

Bakersfield to the rescue! Our move out day was paused by yet another pleasant visit to the neighborhood taco-tequila-whiskey joint. Dakota greeted us warmly, quickly showed us our table, and was a fine illustration of all the exemplary staff, including Ben, the general manager. I've had the tacos before. They're excellent. But I needed something a bit lighter given the amount of lifting and walking left in my day. The salad Jacob suggested to me was way beyond what I expected. Lettuce? Nope, fresh mixed field greens. Croutons? Nope, toasted almonds. Cucumbers? Nope, hearts of palm... It's great how food can taste when creative people care! And the cider vinaigrette- sweetly tart and refreshing. I almost cried, but instead I ordered one of their ever delicious and always rotating brews. I would tell you which one but I have to carry a couch now, you'll have to come see for yourself. Salud.

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Bakersfield. Great atmosphere, I've always had awesome service, and the food and drinks are on point! Also, hidden gem in the queso - it comes in a cast iron skillet and is fabulous. Very veg/pescatarian friendly as well :)

Had the fish, short rib and huitlacoche tacos and they were delicious. Everything is in perfect proportion so each bit is great. The chips, queso with chorizo were a smart addition, but how can you go wrong with gooey cheese and spicy sausage? The only complaint is that it is really noisy. The crowd plus the loud music make it difficult to carry on a conversation. Reasonably priced. Good drinks.

Mark R is right. "How can you not like a place that plays Clint Eastwood on flat screens?" Better yet, with Johnny Cash music playing overhead. I wouldn't doubt that one night you'll find me working my JC moves with a taco in hand. During my first visit to Bakersfield, I strolled in at 2 a.m. Yes, 2 a.m., looking for some tacos. Prior to wanting the tacos I was going to "settle" for a loaded coney dog off the street (not that this would have been the worst thing ever). But why go for a chili dog when you can dive face first into tacos like "Pastor" with chili marinated pork, pineapple, pickled onion and cilantro? Or some of the city's best guacamole? Late night veggie craving? I recommend the rajas tacos with poblanos, fresno, bell peppers, ejotes, queso fresco and last but never least, cilantro. A few other tidbits of info that make me love this place: -craft cocktail menu with fair prices (rumor has it the red headed cocktail is THE one) -western chic interior - there is a really good vibe - be it from the music, Mass Ave location, concrete bar and sleek lighting -Indy has been in desperate need of some late night eateries that go beyond the typical coney dogs, nachos and loaded fries -great news: their extending hours to offer lunch starting next week! -I'm really looking forward to spending some late summer nights on the sidewalk space (fingers crossed the interior music will extend onto the streets) Welcome to the neighborhood, Bakersfield! You've officially been added to my late night/earlyafternoon/dinner hit list.

Great place to hang out and have a taco. The environment is upbeat and moderately loud. The tacos were fantastic. I recommend the mole, as it was delicious. They have a long list of tequilas but I did not try any. For a taco the prices were a little high, but no complaints about food quality. Good service and for a chain restaurant, impressive

They had me at margarita... I'm somewhat of a margarita connoisseur (and yes I had to google that to learn how to spell it, don't judge me). But as a result I have a low tolerance for the sugary mix-in's that result in unnecessary stomach pains. I've heard rave reviews about their margaritas so I HAD to try one, and by one I mean a 64oz pitcher (split between several females... I promise I don't have a problem). They were DELICIOUS. No issues with mix-in's ruining the drink, and the flavor was incredibly authentic. Then came the plethora of tacos that changed my life. I currently have a love affair with the pollo rojo tacos. The chipotle lime crema topping made all the flavors come together perfectly... order this you definitely won't regret it. I also HIGHLY recommend the guacamole if you like chunky guacamole that tastes like a small piece of heaven on a chip. Trust me, this place is a must stop if you are ever on Mass Ave. Did I mention some of the bartenders were wearing suspenders? Yeah, yet another reason this place is exceptional!

I guess I have to go against the grain a bit with 3 stars. I will say that this joint is amazing in the weekdays, weeknights, and weekend days. My experience with the good is amazing. Tacos are authentic, margaritas are strong, the decor is amazing. Our service is great on the said days above. Now the big problem I have, which is a personal opinion and nothing against Bakersfield as I'm sure they are doing quite alright, are the weekends. If I wanted to stand shoulder to shoulder listening to every ones conversation while consuming drinks until my eyes roll back I would go to broad ripple. I don't want to sound like a prude as I am not, I just wish I could grab cocktails on a Saturday night here without being pushed around. But it's great to see what they have done for mass ave. as well as the foodie community!

I've had better tacos at The Tamale Place (look it up) and better margaritas at every other restaurant in town. Our server was terrible. She was either stoned or partially drunk. She mustered maybe 10 words the entire time we were there. Average food/drinks with terrible service will steer us elsewhere next time we're down on Mass Ave.

We saw this place on the news this morning and decided to try it out. Started with some chips and guacamole, not really a big guacamole fan but their guacamole is wicked awesome, its chunky, well balanced flavor, and tasted fresh. Then shared 4 different tacos, a tad small but very tasty particularly the braised short rib and braised pork. The fish taco was good as well but I think it could use some more heat, didnt care much for the braised chicken. They serve some good wicked strong margarita and sangria too. Price is not bad and service was very nice.

Well, they tried. I'll acknowledge that some serious thought went into making Bakersfield on Mass Avenue appear casual, easy, and genuine. Really, though, we were struck by the familiar scent of hipsters trying too hard to be cooler than you and me and Buck Owens and all of the Buckaroos. I like tacos. So, we stayed. Good thing that I like tacos since that's pretty much all they serve. Well, tacos and PBR. Oh, and whiskey. Because, you know, cowboys. And, even though I like tacos, these weren't spectacular. It didn't help that the wait staff seemed in a hurry to get us out of there. Not exactly welcoming.

I was really excited to finally get to go to Bakersfield last night. I had tried to go a couple times but they had been completely packed and we weren't able to get in the door so I made plans to go with a friend during happy hour yesterday (Thursday). We got in just fine and my friend quickly ordered a margarita and I had to try the rose sangria. We both loved the drinks so I give that part an A. The service was really great, can't remember who our waitress was but she was very friendly and was constantly coming by to refill our water which is a huge plus when you're drinking an alcoholic beverage at the same time. I liked the atmosphere a lot. It's very typical smaller restaurant in a big city style to me. Pretty open concept with non-intimidating decorations. But the part that is most important when going to a restaurant is the food and I was pretty underwhelmed. We ordered the queso and guacamole for appetizers and the queso looked like the top of a Pizza Hut cheese pizza. It was perfectly golden brown and I couldn't wait to dig in. It was pretty difficult to get out of the dish and it was still pretty solid which made it hard to eat with chips. I would have liked it to be more like a queso blanco like you would get at any other Mexican-style restaurant. And it seemed to be the complete opposite for the guacamole. I would have liked that to have more texture and instead it came out like a watery soup and tasted very earthy. I ordered the pastor taco and the rajas taco. I've had plenty of pastor tacos in my day and this was probably the worst one I've ever had. The meat was so saturated with the sauce they marinate it in that my fingers were pretty much stained after trying to keep the taco from collapsing. The rajas, which is pretty much just peppers, cilantro, and some fresh cheese was alright. Nothing bad, and I would probably order it in a pinch if need be. Overall I would say that this place gets a lot of hype for just being ok. I probably wouldn't choose to go here again unless we were just grabbing drinks.

My husband and I were born and raised Hoosiers and now reside in Bakersfield CA. We came home to visit family and we were excited to try the Bakersfield on Mass restaurant downtown! Much like the people of Bakersfield the staff and management were extremely pleasant and helpful. The food was amazing and the atmosphere was fantastic! We will go back to Bakersfield and tell all of our friends there that The Bakersfield Sound is well represented in Indianapolis! Highly recommend for everyone to try!

Bakersfield is situated in a great location in downtown Indy (across from Bazbeaux and Ball and Biscuit) This new addition ushers in a more well-rounded Mass Ave, and provides another fantastic dining and drinking option. The menu here is refreshingly uncomplicated and succinct. Selections of eight different tacos ranging in price from $3-$4. Chips and guacamole, salads, and tortas. The usual local suspects on tap such as Sun King's Wee-Mac, as well as a daily $2 "Boot" of Pabst. Rotating options of $3 Whiskey and Tequila shots. A ROSE Sangria that sounded AMAZING-but ultimately, I HAD to go with a margarita. First Margarita I had was the $12 Premium Margarita, it was a tad overly sweet. It's funny, but I found my second choice, the $6 Bakersfield Margarita, was actually far better than the premium. On to the food....So they make a point of telling you about their famous guacamole, like, right when you sit down. THEY. ARE. NOT. LYING. This is probably the best guacamole I've had since moving here from Chicago. Really great and fresh. Tacos were unbelievable, We tried: The Mole, Pastor, and Short Rib, and spicy Cochinita Pobil. Honestly, really hard to say which one I liked the best. Probably The Mole. The spices and seasonings were perfect, subtle layers of flavors in even their spicier Cochinita Pibil. Seating is just shy of crowded but not terrible. Music is good and a bit loud but didn't bother me. Old cowboy/western movie playing.on their TV's and not sports. Wait staff are great and friendly. What another welcome addition to downtown Indy! My new "Go-To" for my Mexican and Margarita Fix!

Full disclosure. I have no idea what drinks cost at Bakersfield. I never pay attention. That's not a rich guy statement. I'm poor. I'm just way into the atmosphere there and generally don't pay attention. Sorry internet. Looks like there are two dollar signs up there. Go with that. Its built to look like a speakeasy, which is extremely pleasant, esthetically. They even use these amazing, coil Edison lightbulbs, the novelty of which will never dissipate for me. Downstairs, the walls are bare brick and mortar, but it looks classy as shit. I feel like John Dillinger every time I have a drink down there. The beer selection is a bit sparse for my taste, but they've got plenty of great liquors, specifically bourbon. Bourbon is good, guys. Go drink it at Bakersfield.

Tacos Tequila and Whiskey! This place has a lot of seating, including lots of bar space to stand while waiting and standing tables outside. Guacamole and queso were great starters and they had good priced pitches of house margaritas. Tacos were flavorful and decent size!

Alright, alright. 4 stars it is. Every time I've come here, it's gotten progressively better. They've really hit their groove now. Service is stellar. Expeditious without being hurried.

"I have to ask, why is this place called Bakersfield?" "It's named Bakersfield after the country music scene that popped up and inspired a lot of artists." "Oh, ok. that makes more sense. I don't know if you've ever been there..." "Are you from there?" "No, thank god," I blurt. "Yea, I've heard it's not..." Great is what I imagine she would have said, when she trailed off. Our initial conversation with our incredibly nice waitress at Bakersfield, about the other Bakersfield, the country-inspired Mexican taco / tequila / margarita / whiskey joint on Mass Ave. We started off with a must of chips, guac, and salsa ($ ) and margs ($6 each). Any place with the section that starts LARGE FORMAT COCKTAILS should be on your list. What it goes on to detail are pitchers of margaritas and sangria, but still, nice wording guys. The very chunky guacamole and salsa verde (possible with avocado in it as well) are GREAT. I could have drank the stuff. The smokier rojo was good too, but seriously, go green. After that you have the option of a dozen or so fish, veggie, beef, chicken and pork tacos served atop a house-made tortilla (a nice touch) at $3-4 each. The fish tacos were great, especially with some of the pretty great pretty chunky guacamole added on top. The pastor and conchinita pibil (pork) tacos were good, but far too similar and a little too barbecue that what I've come to expect from these picks. So sure I was that the tacos were inspired by the famous Guisado's in East LA, that I asked the waitress. "The owners are from Chicago, so I'm not sure" was the answer. Still, it's a good sign when the kid from California wishes there were more places like this in LA. Even in Los Angeles, trendy bar type places tend to serve bad, overpriced Mexican and hole in the wall Mexican joints tend to not be the sort of place you go out for drinks to hang out. Bakersfield, despite being named after a fairly barren stretch of land in the Golden State is pretty nice and clearly popular with good food and a good bar scene. Dark, rustic, Edison bulbs (you know the look) with a bit of bar space and space downstairs. The tables upstairs are close enough on one side you might catch some guy awkwardly glaring at you or on the other side, something more like this. "I'm sorry to interject," said a girl from the table next to ours interjected, "but your conversation is beautiful." Clearly the margaritas had worked as there had been some discussion of models-turned-actresses, Transformers, Presidential memes and god knows what else that had motivated the neighbors to join in, enjoying their own margaritas. I decided I liked the crowd here and quickly made friends with the fun table next to us and continued with an off-color discussion of Harry Potter. Already a few more margaritas and Kristen Stewart impressions than maybe necessary we decided to maybe move on, admittedly with some hesitation. And Lo! Lo and behold, the aforementioned (The) Ball & Biscuit across the street.

We went for lunch today, and got a table right away. Our server knew the menu inside out & helped us get some of the best Quac I have had out in a long time (with great chips), then helped pick out a flight of $4 tacos that were amazing. I will be back for sure!

This place is great! This is an amazing addition to Mass Ave (downtown in general). I tried several items on the menu, but the Fish Tacos really stood out. They are DELICIOUS. My friend and I sat at the bar and it was a fun time. She had a margarita and I had a beer. The General Manager and Bar Manager really know their stuff and have put a solid staff in place. Right now, Bakersfield is only open for dinner, so stop by after 4 PM.

Tacos, tequila, and whiskey. Tacos are great: I had the Pollo Verde and the Cochinita. Both were small but savory. Cochinita was spicy (habañero pepper!) and pulled pork...so good. $3 daily shots as well. My table mates loved the fish (mahi), mole, and short rib. Limited menu, but every item is worth trying.

You can find places with good service, food, drinks, ambiance or reasonable prices, but rarely do they all happen at the same time. If you have ever liked a true margarita or some upscale street-style tacos, this is the place for you. The only drawback is that it gets crowded; there's no keeping this place a secret.

Heard the Tacos were good and for once I agree. Mini Tacos Grande Flavor!!! I Started with Chips and Salsa which was just okay and was a verde salsa. Pretty boring but good flavor. Had 4 tacos. Chicken Verde, Corn, Shredded Pork, and Pastor. Both the pastor and pork were phenomenal and the corn was pretty amazing too. Chicken was a little dry but usually is and this one was still very good. Probably could have had three tacos with no chips and been a solid meal. They don't skimp on the meat either and the meat is the highlight of the meal. Probably the best tacos I have had anywhere. As far as some saying its over priced I really disagree. You can get 3 tacos for $9 to $12 which is plenty of food and I eat a lot. The quality of tacos is beyond anything I know of for this price. The tacos were better than the tacos I had at Fontera a Rick Bayless restaurant in Chicago and they were exceptional too.

Yes, yes, yes! I loved everything about Bakersfield! I'm in my mid twenties and I often enjoy being in fun places with great food and drinks. I had the fish tacos, which are mini but packed with flavor! The guacamole will make you smack yo mama! :)) It was just the place to go to wine dine and get to know my colleagues a little better. Who are all 30+ and ended up going back a 2nd night during our 4 night stay in Indy!

What a fun place! Love the atmosphere here- sort of trendy wine bar (minus the wine) meets Tex-Mex meets urban. The downstairs is amazing! Not very big, so get there early or expect a wait. The food is fabulous! I'm a fan of the al la carte menu and I love that you can pick and choose your tacos for $3 or $4 each. The menu is pretty limited but everything I tried was delicious (I recommend the Mole and Pastor tacos!) Guac and queso are great apps and the margaritas was top notch. They also have an expansive tequila and whiskey menu as well. I thought the prices were pretty decent for Mass Ave as well. I'll definitely be back!

Not sure what all the positive reviews are talking about. Maybe they are just wooed by the ambiance or the bar menu, but the tacos are sub par. Single corn tortilla? Well every authentic taco spot uses two corn tortilla because otherwise they crack and the filling gets everywhere. Speaking of filling, the meat was dry and over cooked on the chicken tacos, and the fish tacos where basically a fried fish stick. Short rib was moister, but braised meat is usually like that, and the tacos tasted average And without a second tortilla, I left hungry after 3 tacos, at lunch, and a $25 bill. Service was great, salsa was amazing, and the chips tasted great, but the tacos sucked. Unless Taco Bell is your standard, this place is "meh." And not worth the price

I was really, really excited to make it here. I had read good things, and heard similar comments from friends. I really just thought it was... OK. The guacamole was the high point, really great. We tried the queso with the chips but it was bland and after it cooled it didn't taste that good. The tacos were good, but not $4 good. Bummer. I really wanted to like this place, but I don't think I'll be back.

Loved this place!!! Be sure to order a jalepeno margarita, it's delicious! Tacos are quite filling, especially if you enjoyed their guacamole while waiting. Two tacos should fill you up just fine (no need to order more since they're $4 ea). Can't wait to go back again!!

Get here. Get here now and have some awesome guacamole. Get here and have a delicious, fresh margarita made by a friendly, professional and cool (and, ok, hot) bartender. Get here and try some amazing tacos brought out to your table by one of the friendliest waitstaff I've encountered in Indy. Are you getting the point? GET HERE, SON!!

Great place!!!! The inside looked amazing and the bar setup was excellent. The place was packed with a line outside but we were seated quickly and service was excellent. We tried the quac and 4 different tacos and they were all excellent. The house salsas were really good and the quac was very chunky. The one downside was the mole taco didn't have enough mole but the taco was still great. Highly recommend, and the prices are reasonable.

Loved it! Great food & service. Fantastic guacamole! We tried 6 of the 8 tacos and like them all. The price was very reasonable. There is not a full bar. Great beer & tequila but no good vodka (I drink it with everything. I do understand that this is a taco tequila joint.)

1st time here, and it's for lunch. But, I got great service, good beer, and most importantly, AMAZING tacos! The staff are young, trendy, but on top of their game. And, if I could handle tequila at lunch, they have a great selection.

I LOOOVE that I found a cool little taco joint on Mass Ave. Came here for the first time on Sunday when we were rolling around looking for something to do. Hopped on yelp and found this place which sounded like exactly what we were looking for. There was no wait, we were seated right away, which is always awesome. The margaritas are delicious and the tacos are good too. But what will make me come back again is the queso with jalapenos on top. Probably best queso I have ever had. There is a downstairs part that I wasn't able to see but I love the upstairs decor.

My sister, mom and I had dinner here before a Colts game. As we waited by the bar someone asked us if we wanted an appetizer or drinks. The wait staff was definitely on top of things. We started off with the guacamole; it was fresh and flavorful! The chips were still warm as well, definite bonus. I ordered the Pastor and short rib tacos. Though the tacos appeared small they were filled very generously. I typically love El Pastor tacos, but the short ribs won between the two. Overall the atmosphere was great, drinks were good, food was delicious and the staff was attentive.

Make sure to visit this place especially if you're in the mood for freshly made margaritas that offer at least a couple choices of quality tequila. Tacos and variety of appetizers are very tasty. Street front windows can open up on nice weather days. Staff was VERY accommodating and generous, especially Grayson. Thanks for opening up a location in Indianapolis and best of luck.....I'll be back time and time again!

Fake. Great location, but the place seems fake. Fake dive bar ambiance, fake loud noise, fake food, fake bartenders. It will thrive by location alone. This is for people that don't want to really go to a honky tonk bar, but want to pretend they have.

When it's hard to find a table, head to the bar downstairs! Often times the line for the bar will be shorter and less crowded. Drinks are well made and fairly strong. Not an idea sports bar as often times they play old westerns, so if you love Clint Eastwood...

Bakersfield is an awesome new addition to Mass Ave. the food is good- the queso is to die for. It comes out in a hot skillet and is a perfect happy hour treat. The atmosphere is cool, it's one of the younger spots on Mass Ave.

Absolutely wonderful service and an incredible general manager that is passionate about his restaurant. Both the GM and our waitress took such great care of my family and I a few weeks ago. Since it was our 1st visit, he offered us a really nice appetiser on the house and made sure to personally take us through the menu. Amazing hand crafted tacos that really make the palate sizzler! And great beer selection as well. Will definitely go back!

Delicious margaritas (in mason jars!), amazing tacos, great chips and salsa. Windows were open and you could feel the light night breeze. Service switched shifts while we were eating and we were left behind a bit, but it was all settled and everything worked out. Nice beer list, real glass bottle cokes, I wish this place was right around the corner from me!

The service is outstanding, our server (Jenna) was very personable and took the time to talk to us about the menu and made the experience fun. The prices are outstanding, chips, tacos and tequila for two was $28, what a bargain. Environment was highly charged and exciting. Yes it is loud but that is easily overcome by all the other great factors. The guacamole and chips are an absolute must.

The mole mini tacos were great; however, I would have had to consume about six of them to fill my hunger. At $4 a pop, I would most like go somewhere else to sit down for a complete meal.

I like margarita's, and this place has excellent margaritas. Served in big mason jars with fresh ingredients. Also has great taco's of all varieties (pork, fish, steak). Definitely the best guac I've had in the Indy area - super fresh and fast. All really reasonably priced, with great service.

Really enjoyed a nice summer day shine munching on chips and guac at Bakersfield. Their margaritas are nice and balanced but very strong! We got 4 different tacos to share but the best was definitely the short ribs. Will def. go back again & again!

At first, I was hesistant to go here due to a small menu, but it was worth taking the chance. They have many options for tequila and even serve Mexican Soda, my favorite. I had the braised pork torta which was bursting full of flavor and the most tender meat. The chips and queso I highly recommend with chorizo. The meat isn't spicy. My husband got 4 different kinds of tacos and beer. Our check came to $40 which is a great deal for two people dinner, beverages, and a trendy locale like Mass ave. We were very please and got right in. Service was great. Place is clean and very cool on the inside. We will be back! PS- the green stuff in the bottle on the table is amazing! It's like a cilantro lime salsa verde. Very good!

For starters, I loved the atmosphere, although it was definitely a little crowded. But that's usually a good sign, and that help true in this case! We started with chips and guac and margaritas. I was a little miffed that you have to order the chips and salsa even, so we upgraded to the guac anyways. Boy was it worth it. Some of the best guacamole I've ever had. I was sold on this alone. When you order tacos, the whole table's order comes out on a big tray. It was kind of fun and family style. I had the mole chicken and the short rib. The mole was good but the short rib absolutely knocked me off my feet. I wanted like 20 more. Not even kidding. Although two tacos with chips was enough for me that night, I could say that many nights that would leave me hungry. The tacos are kind of small for the fact that you pay $3-4 piece but they had plenty of meat and the quality definitely helped. Decent beer selection, too. My only major complaint would be that the menu is rather small. However, it seems they've mastered a few things and do them really well, so it's a good trade off.

Eh, maybe -- maybe -- I'll give it another shot, but because there are so many so much better Mexican places in town at a much lower price, I seriously doubt it. The tacos looked good. They are small, but the filing is extremely generous. We had the tortas -- both the Milanese and the short ribs -- and both of them were seriously lacking. In flavor, in much of anything. The queso dip was fine, and the chips were crispy. The staff is tremendously friendly, which is a great thing. The place is pretty tiny -- thus, the long waits on evenings and weekends.

This place seems to have been packed since they open. When walking by there always seems to be groups of young professionals partying it up and people pouring out of windows. My first visit was to grab a quick beer and a couple tacos. It was bumping. Pretty sure my seat wasn't even a real bar seat. It was a bit too loud and cramped, but the tacos were decent albeit small and a bit pricey. Second visit was on a tuesday which had us waiting an hour for a table. They called us on our phone at a bar across the street which was nice. We were sat downstairs which was also nice because it was hot as shit upstairs and crowded as hell. Anyway, we had queso, guac, and a bunch of tacos. The guac and queso were good. The tacos were ok. Lacking a bit of flavor or seasoning. Not bad, just not great. Plus they are TINY and expensive for what they are. I ate three tacos in about 6 bites. That was about $11 right there in tacos alone. I have no problem paying top dollar for food, but man i felt ripped off. Plus they bring everyone's tacos out on a communal taco board which was just a bit confusing and annoying. Service was good, especially for how packed the place was.

We were excited to check this place out when it opened, thought it'd be something special given what its "pieces" were...Bakersfield, CA country music theme, tacos, good drinks and outdoor seating. Really glad they renovated the space (looks great!!). But the place was entirely too loud, for anything. This coming from someone who thinks a good Friday night is seeing a live band, up close! And it feels formulaic and sterile, which I wouldn't have thought almost impossible for anything based on Bakersfield country. My mixed drink disappointed, but the guac does not. The small tacos are nice (we had the fish ones) and pull together some fresh ingredients, but by the book. Perhaps it has a better vibe late at night (11 pm - 2 am) but for dinner and early evening I'd probably go elsewhere. That said, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the guac was awesome. Check it out, you should go at least once and decide.

  • Lindsay P.

As expected, this place was jam packed when we visited on a Friday night during it's first few weeks with their doors open. I must say that the staff was incredible, despite them barely being able to move through all of the guests. Our server was very patient with us and took the time to go through the whole menu - very helpful. Tacos ranged from $3-5 and generally people order 3 each. We were all pretty stuffed after 2-3 tacos, plus we ordered the queso and guacamole. Both were excellent, but if I had to choose, I'd get the guac again for sure. I sampled my husband's house margarita and have to say it was pretty damn good - especially for not being a huge margarita fan! The ambience was a bit hard to take in and enjoy given the large crowd, but I'm hoping our next visit will be a bit more low key. I believe they do allow kids in one area of the restaurant and they plan to add outdoor seating in the front (along Mass Ave). This place is definitely a keeper!

Upon arrival a sign reading "Bakersfield" greeted me. As I entered the large double doors I was greeted instantly by a hostess standing behind a large oaken barrel (something I soon found to be the norm at this establishment). Being opening night I had arrived earlier than the friend that I was meeting only to find that there was no wait and was immediately sat at a picnic table located on the wall to the left of the bar. The bar is the focal ponit of the restaurant sitting in the middle and taking up approximately 1/3 of the upstairs area. The right side has a more posh seating arrangment with half booth half table arrangements. The left wall as stated above is full of picnic tables that are community sat. The rest of the upstairs is dotted with oaken barrels with cement tops on them that are used as high tops seating 2-3 individuals. I was immediately greeted by a young women who explained the menu and took my drink order, (a bulleitt bourbon on the rocks). As I glanced around the restaurant I found it to be an ecclectic mix of a younger trendier group and a middle aged group of professionals, all enjoying the ambiance of Johnny Cash music and other music of the period accomapanied with the continually playing Clint Eastwood movies. Bakersfield, the restaurant, named after Bakersfield, CA, the town, owes its homage to a blend of western and hispanic undertones. Once my date finally arrived (I being 15 minutes early and she being 15 minutes late) 30 minutes later, we had the chance to dissect the menu and decide upon some items to try. Browsing through the menu is very simple and easily managed within 30 seconds, however the list of whiskeys and tequilas available as well as the numerous beers available took a much more substantial amount of time. The menu is simplistic, to the point, and easily understood. There is a choice of several starters, two salads, two sandwiches, and eight tacos. With the focal point of the menu being the tacos we decided to try them all. The tacos arrived on a tray with a stand resembling that of some pizza shops where the pizza is elevated off the table. The tacos were superb. A nice homemade shell with a generous portion of the desired protein or vegetable. My only criticism was that all rustic tacos that I had eaten previously had been double-shelled and it was probably for good reason. Several of the tacos three of the eight fell apart while eating them. As we continued eating the tacos, conversing, and of course drinking (by this time it was time for another drink, a modelo this time). I found the achiote beef taco to be the most satisfying and relished every bite. My partner found the Mahi taco to be every bit as delicious as she had hoped, as the fish was cooked nicely. The pickled onions that are found on top of the achiote beef taco and the chicken mole taco absolutely make each taco. While we tried the two vegetarians options we found them to be lacking in flavor in relation to the three mentioned above. While they were not by any means poorly executed flavor combinations they just left a little to be desired, this was cured by the use of the two homemade sauces that are provided on the table. One is a tomatillo-chipotle sauce that is red in coloration. The hints chipotle add a smokier note to it. The other is more strictly tomatillo it is green in color and is more mild in approach in terms of flavor. It has a more vinegar and acidic base to it that lends itself very well on the fish and chicken dishes; while I personally enjoyed the red sauce on the beef and pork dishes. Both sauces worked extremely well on the vegetarian options. Once finished with our tacos we ventured around the restaurant to find there is a basement. In addition, this humble inviting space with brick accents and low ceilings was the perfect location for my date and I to further our conversation. In the basement there is a room for private dining as well as for larger groups. The small quaint 5-stool bar located on the back wall was very nice and allowed for more conversation and a more personalized approach by the bartender than the busy and bustling upstairs. For the first night I was very impressed by the service and attention to detail. All food was served promptly and drinks were made well. I found Bakersfield to be an excellent place that I would frequent in the future. I view Bakersfield as a great place for drinks and grabbing a bite to eat. It does not appeal to me as as a dinner destination but more so a place to converse and drink and grab a snack or a light dinner. On future trips I plan to be seated in the basement as this area appealed to me due to the intimacy and the attention that is afforded there. 8/10

My go to place for short rib tacos and delicious margaritas! The staff, including the GM, are incredibly kind and hospitable. If you want to have a great time with friends this is the place to go! I suggest a pitcher of margaritas and an order of guac outside in warmer weather but you can't go wrong here any time of year!

    (5)
  • Emel S.

So I like Bakersfield for drinks. The margaritas are really good and the pitcher is great to share amongst friends. They do have a few beers to choose from but I wouldn't go there for a massive beer selection. This place is always packed on the weekends so be prepared to wait or make a reservation if you can. You can stand at these bar like tables downstairs but the seating down there is with the hostess as well. The tacos...I will admit I've only tried them once so maybe I need to give them another chance. The fish taco was good. The chicken one was okay. I've heard higher pork one is good but I don't eat pork so that one is out for me. I've heard the guacamole is good but I haven't tried it. I have tried the queso though and was not a fan. The guacamole does look good so I will have to try it some time. One thing I do like is that you can order as few or as many tacos as you want. I think you need at least 2 and a basket of chips to call it a meal. Or if you have crazy amounts of willpower, don't eat so many chips and eat a third taco. I have yet to master that skill.

Really like this place as an addition to the Mass Ave scene (I know I'm very late to the party). The atmosphere is great and the inside very well laid out - it gets pretty crowded so going early (before 6) or late (8:30 or 9) for dinner is probably a good idea especially later in the week / weekends. The drink selection is awesome, from really good margaritas to a nice beer/bourbon/tequila selection. I'd usually rather drink my bourbon at home (before going out, since its 1/10 the cost) but their selections are top notch. The chips and salsa were very good, especially the red salsa with kind of a smoky taste. The tacos were also very good - had the pastor and cochinita pibil. Wish they were a little bigger but that's the name of the game here, and you can throw down enough chips and drinks that it doesn't matter too much.

Does it get any better than Bakersfield on Mass Ave? I think not. Took the fam to Indy to hit up the children's museum. Stopped by Bakersfield for a quick bite. The staff went out of their way to be accomodating. Being a nati native, I knew of Bakersfield but had never been to the hometown location. They've got a good thing going in Indy and I'd highly recommend them to out-of-towners and Indy natives as well!

I know that the tacos are small and $4 each -- but they are fabulous! Short Rib taco is my fave! but Seafood is great too! They make their own margarita mix and "wow" it is the best in the city! Guacamole dip is wonderful - as far as I am concerned its all good! And taste some Bourbon too.

  • Ally F.

So, first off: this place is a bar with light, ala carte cuisine. And its not all that great, either. We visited this place on a Tuesday afternoon. There was a fair amount of people there, but, almost half of the patrons were employees. Including several people taking shots while on the clock and serving customers...wha-? We're talking 3:30 in the afternoon. Our server had a passive-aggressive 'tude and was far too distracted with getting ready to end her shift and watching her kid who was hanging out on the patio. The GOOD: Excellent, I mean REALLY excellent margaritas. The salsa was pretty good also. The BAD: everything else. Now, having lived in Southern California for 17 years, I know good, authentic Mexican food. Even still, I try not to be a total snob about Midwest Mexican cuisine attempts...but, this place claims to be true blue authentic, so they open themselves up to scrutiny. First off, the queso was curdled. Gross!! Second, chips and salsa is served with plates?? Really? How do you dip a chip on a plate? I suppose you're supposed to just squirt some salsa on a chip, which is OK, but not everyone wants to do that. $4 tacos served on a 3" corn tortilla. Yes, $4 for ONE tiny taco...and, nothing else. The fish taco was mediocre, at best. The papas tostada was also just okay. The papas were of the sweet variety and that wasn't mentioned on the menu. Not cool. Not everyone likes sweet potatoes. Overall, no reason to return here unless I'm dying for a stiff margarita.

Great food and fun atmosphere, but apparently the owners are too cheap to fix the a/c which has been out since last summer. It's miserably hot to eat there and we were completely sweated through our clothes before our tacos arrived. I'd only go during the winter months or mild weather. UPDATE Apparently a/c has been fixed, but I haven't been back since this review.

PBR in a boot-cheese in a skillet-incredible tacos ready in just a few minutes-this is our new favorite spot! I will be taking all my out of town friends there. Love it!

I've been going to and taking people to Bakersfield since it opened. It's pretty much one of the best restaurants in Indianapolis. Great food, killer drinks, rock'n atmosphere, and bad ass staff. On my latest visit with a friend who has never been there, we were really enjoying catching up and engrossed in our conversation.....she's a smoker and needed cigarettes so I asked the manager who instead of sitting in an office doing nothing happened to be out bussing tables and helping his waitstaff...where I could go grab her a pack for my friend. Not only did he tell me, he insisted on going for her so that we could continue to enjoy ourselves. Amazing. He wouldn't even let her pay for the pack. Customer for life. Rock the hell on Bakersfield.

Food is good but not kicked up to give stars. I heard from my group that the pork was good. Guacamole definitely the star. Chips are just ok. They are not fresh. Margaritas are good. Staff makes this place great. Their salsa is good just needs more heat! I has the Milanese aka giant chicken nugget. We loved it.

I respectable taco joint with fantastic atmosphere. Some reviews I saw listed the prices as "cheap," but I have to disagree. Each taco is $3 - $4 and pretty tiny, so to get full, you need at least 3, so about $12. Not outrageous, but definitely not cheap. With drinks and an appetizer, we spent about $60 on dinner. Love, LOVE the atmosphere. Lots of exposed wood and whiskey and tequila as far as the eye can see. If you hate sitting on backless chairs, get there early. There are a few booths, but mostly backless stools. I saw a couple of patrons struggling to get comfy on them. Staff all appear to be prompt and polite. Our server, Ann, was phenomenal. She explained everything, had tried everything on the menu, and was able to give a good tequila recommendation. We tried nearly all the tacos. The mole and fish tacos are standouts. The pollo and huitlachoche tacos did not have a lot of flavor, but they were ok. The salsa was super good. Don't be put off by the salsa in a squeeze bottle. It is so flavorful. Great on chips and on the tacos. We also tried the Milanesa torta. Pretty much a perfect sandwich. No complaints. It is breaded chicken with a black bean paste, salsa verde (add more!), arugula, and an avocado lemon mayo that is a perfect accompaniment. We started with the queso. I loved that the top was browned, but the cheese underneath had a weird lumpy consistency. It tasted ok, but next time I will try the guac. I heard another table raving about it. Definitely a place to try again, especially if they eventually add desserts to their menu. p.s. Along with having a huge tequila and whiskey selection, they have a full bar if you are a crazy weirdo and do not like tequila or whiskey.

I go as often as I can. I love their fish tacos. I love any of their tacos I have tried. On the weekend nights it is busy, so try a week night or lunch. Really good food, and the service is always good.

Me and some folks from a conference I was attending took a cab to this spot since it was recommended by our concierge. When we pulled up, I thought it was a cute spot place that locals hang out at, inside of the restaurant and their patio was packed so our group of 6 had to wait a bit for a table. We were surprised that this place had a basement! Our server escorted us downstairs to our table, it was cool, it was like our own private area! We started with the chips and guac and queso dip, both were delish! I went for the Rose sangria for my drink and I was glad I did, it was good and strong, I only needed 1 :-) For my main course I went for the short rib torta which I was a bit skeptical of, but again it was the perfect choice, the bread mixed with seasoned meat and the queso fresco was delish! Our server was attentive and patient with splitting up all of our checks since we all paid with company cards! If I'm ever back in Indy I would def. make another visit.

I can't rave about the guacamole, fish tacos and of course the best margaritas in town enough. The environment is great, the service is friendly and usually fast, the only down fall is there is usually a wait--but that's because it's so good. So plan ahead!

My friends and I were excited to venture to Mass Ave on a chilly November Friday evening. We arrived at Bakersfield to find people waiting outside and were slightly disappointed by the hour and a half wait. We actually ended up eating dinner elsewhere, but we kept our reservations so we could enjoy margaritas after. Our wait ended up only being about an hour and 10 minutes. Our server was AWESOME! It was super busy, but she never expressed being stressed. She brought us our pitcher and we also enjoyed some chips, queso, and guacamole. I HIGHLY suggest this location for young professionals looking to try something trendy and different. Perfect for a drink after work or a Saturday night downtown, just make sure you get there by 5:30 if you want to eat by 7!

When we find a place we really like, we usually end up going again fairly soon. That's why this update shortly after the first. Everything in the first review last month is ditto on this one, but I wanted to add a couple great things about this visit. We went on a Sunday afternoon this time and it wasn't too busy. (I mean no wait) We started with one of their Margaritas (of course) which are very good. We ordered the chips & cheese with a side of guacamole. Once again the guacamole is perfect. I've decided to skip the queso next time 1. to save on calories, 2. it's great when hot but not crazy about it as it cools. Hubster had the short rib torta again, & I had a couple great tacos. **We had a great server, Brian. We asked what $3 shots they had that day. This started a series of extremely informative conversations about tequila with him & the bartender who brought some of our food. Since the restaurant wasn't that busy, they chose to spend time w/us & provide a basic education about tequila instead of chatting w/fellow servers or hiding in the back. We were so impressed that they were so into their trade & wanted to share it. We tried a couple! Thanks & hats off to both of you!

Initially disappointed. Was not impressed by the tacos. Everything felt overpriced. I enjoyed the guac and the margaritas. Wrote a review on yelp and the owner reached out. I really appreciated that he did. He was very nice and professional. I will try Bakersfield again an this next time I will try a sandwich.

Stopped in here with my buddy that was about 15 yrs my junior for a friday night around Mass Ave. I stepped in here and the vibe was young hipster super crowded and seemed like I was not worthy ha ha! The bartender was cool, appetizers were good and they had beer choices I liked, plus, plus, plus!!! We hung around for quite a while, chatted up some people next to us and had a great time! Attention Ladies!! I can't say for sure as I have only been here once but one thing I noticed (and I wasn't trying) was there were some of the best looking guys in this place. Granted I did have a couple of beers by then but the beer goggles were not on. you might want to give it a try and see if you can meet one :) Btw, there were also very nice looking ladies but that seems more common at a bar.... For me anyway :)

This is the place is a must visit when in Indy - coolest spot on Mass Ave. We arrived at 7pm on a Thursday & it was wall to wall packed with good looking folks. The bar was hopping & the bartenders were cute cute. Though it was super busy we were seated in under 20 min. My gal pal & I ordered two margaritas (served in a mason jar ---- adorable) & a few tapas. 'Ritas were filled with lots of tequila & very little sweet & sour mix - how I like it! We sampled their tacos - one fish & one pork. The fish taco was served on corn tortilla, a hefty piece of fried fish with a sweet coleslaw. I love me a fish taco & I have had some remarkable ones in Austin so I can be pretty picky when it comes to what I like/don't like - these were fantastic. Fish was perfectly fried & the flavors from the slaw complemented the dish nicely. Serves was above par - our waitress was always asking to fill up our drinks:). This bar reminded me of Austin - exposed brick, cool CD's hanging on the wall + there were hipsters everywhere. My new favorite bar in Indy -- great addition to Mass Ave!

My husband and I love Bakersfield! From their homemade sweet and sour to their incredible tacos it is definitely one of our favorite places on Mass Ave. I've seen reviews about it being too crowded, however in my opinion that is a good thing. I never feel like I am waiting too long for anything even when it is packed, which reflects great service!

Great food and love being able to order tacos a la carte to try different flavors. Gotta try the guacamole for an appetizer, it's delish! Unique environment, great decor. If you are looking to sit at the bar and it's full (which it ALWAYS is) there is a small bar downstairs too. My primary complaint is this place is ALWAYS packed. You are guaranteed to wait at least an hour, on the weekends and around dinner time can be up to 2 hours...only waiting space is outside, which has heating lamps on the plus side but in my opinion not worth waiting outside for and hour or more.

I'd give this taco/tequila joint a 10 if I could. Nice looking ladies, music is on point, and the salsa is fire. Long live Waylon!

WOW, atmosphere is pretty cool, which although not what makes a place worth going to, it definitely helps. Margaritas are REALLY good. really. Tacos, most of them are really good, some are just good. I most recently tried the Johnny Salad, and it is definitely a good plate of food BUT this place has some of the best guacamole I have ever had, and I just moved here from Southern California. this Guac is as good as it gets for real. worth your time if you want a drink and a light meal or big snack, definitely an instant favorite.

In search of a good place to eat late, we followed Yelp to a place near the hotel. The guac seemed to be the best bet so we started there. It was some of the better guac I have had in a restaurant, but we did have to ask for some salt to finish it off right. If you don't make it at home and don't know any better, you wouldn't know how much better guac is with the perfect amount of salt. Also had the corn chowder, which we both found to be excellent. I only got one bite before she finished off the whole bowl, but it was a damn good bite. After the apps, we decided to try 6 tacos to see which one was the best. Basically we got all the tacos that had meat, some were only slightly different and I may have thought they were the same had I now known they were different. The Pastor has pineapple which makes for a unique taco. Our favorite was the short rib, great combo of flavors especially the pickled onions. One of the tacos was so wet it basically fell apart when we picked it up. We were not fans of the tortillas, agreed that they were pretty flavorless and probably need to be served with a double tortilla instead of a single. Hopefully hipster is your thing because it seemed to be the theme here. Oh one last thing, the tacos are $4 and are kind of small. I would say they are $2 tacos at best $3. All that being said, finding food late is not easy, and finding good food that late is almost impossible in most cities. Solid place for some latenight food and relax with friends.

Loved the margaritas and tacos. The queso appetizer is not to be missed. THought the prices were a little steep for amount of food that you get (most people would probably eat 2-4 tacos), but it's definitely a cool place in a great location. I also didn't love the tables being a barrel... it looked interesting, but it leaves no where for your feet. You either swivel sideways or straddle it awkwardly!

Tried out Bakersfield on Friday night (grand opening weekend according to our waitress). I usually don't expect perfection early on for a new restaurant, so my bar was set a bit lower than usual. We had a party of 4, which was apparently a difficult number for the restaurant as all of their seating was 2, 6, or 8. We were told there would be an one hour wait (only 20 minutes for parties of 2), but we were willing to wait and have some margaritas and tequila to pass the time. Unfortunately, it took 1 1/2 hours for our table. Usually that would automatically pin the review at 3 stars max, but I'm giving them some leeway for opening week. They will need to figure out seating for mid sized parties soon though. As a reward (or compensation?) for our waiting, the manager check on us several times and brought us free chips and guacamole (he actually offered more so that was good service). As for the food, guacamole and fresh chips were out of sight. Really nice, chunky, and fresh. We ordered 8-10 small tacos and shared. They were all good, although the pork tacos were a head about the others. Drinks were nice, but not very strong. Really good lime taste to the margaritas, not overly sweet. A friend at the table ordered a cup of corn chowder, but it was so thick that he couldn't eat it as a soup. We ended up using it for dipping our chips in. Still had a good flavor. I'm hoping to try this place again in a couple of months, once the excitement dies down and they find their rhythym. Gotta say, the food and the atmosphere was solid to start. Just need to get their service down.

My boss and I were on assignment in Indianapolis, and decided on Mexican for dinner. I did some research on Yelp, and hoped that this place would work out, since one never wants to take their boss to a lousy dinner. Bakersfield Mass Ave did not disappoint! Though the restaurant was busy, we were quickly seated near the bar area at a high-top table. Our server was very informative and friendly. She delivered the information we needed without going overboard, and took our drink orders promptly. We both had house margaritas, and quickly downed them. I am a sucker for fresh lemonade and/or limeade, and the margaritas here feature a TON of fresh citrus. They have a bunch of whiskeys as well, thought we did not venture into that part of the cocktail menu. We started with guacamole, which was fresh and very flavorful. It was a good balance of citrus and heat, and the texture was very smooth (without being like baby food). The chips are house-made and done very well, not greasy at all. For dinner we each had an assortment of tacos, which you can order singly. For me it was pastor, fish, and chicken, and steak, pastor and fish for my boss. All of the tacos are made with house made tortillas that have good integrity and do not crumble. The tacos al pastor were subtly spicy and featured pineapple, which I love. The real highlight was the fish taco, which had perfectly fried crispy fish, a creamy sauce and nice fresh cabbage. The combination of textures was great. I hope to return next time I'm in Indianapolis!

Fun atmosphere, but can quickly become packed after 5 pm as downtown office workers converge for $2 PBRs. The tacos are pretty good, somewhat similar to West Coast Tacos before it rolled out of the area. Befitting a bar named Bakersfield (Buck Owens' hometown and the birthplace of the Bakersfield Sound from the 1960s), the best thing about the bar is the music selection. While we were there, we heard a host of songs by Johnny Cash, the Old 97s and Merle Haggard. Can't wait to go again soon.

The atmosphere is great here! But, those looking for good Mexican food shouldn't eat here. They try to make it more like gourmet Mexican but missed the Mexican part. Also, the menu is very limited on choices.

There's a lot I like about the place. Even with the communal seating, the tables are broken up enough (by napkin dispensers and stacks of plates) that there's enough separation that it's not really awkward (but I'm still not a fan of the trend). Even when crowded, the tables are spaced enough that it's not ass-to-elbows. The guac and margaritas are on par with Adobo (but the "premium" one seems a bit steep @ $12, twice the "house" variety). The tacos are pretty small, but tasty- worth the 3-4 dollars each, IMO. Best of the bunch were probably the short rib and the huitlacoche (mushroomy corn fungus), with mole and al pastor not far behind. I'll be back. My only real complaint was the volume level of the music (another trend I hope will pass). Hopefully enough people will complain that they'll get the message and turn it down.

Perfect way to end summer! I have walked past Bakersfield several times and it always crowded..now I can see why its always crowded..some of the best authentic Mexican food I have ever had!! The menu is limited, yet delicious. I ordered the short rib taco, the pork belly taco, and their guac. Guac was to die for - fresh, chunks of whole avocados, and tons of flavor with every bite. I thought I wasn't going to have ordered enough with the 2 tacos and guac, but they load the filling in each taco, so it was plenty. Would definitely come back again!

My biggest issue with this place is that after I order one margarita, i'm drunk enough to order a second. They are good... and they will also wreck you. Hope you aren't driving! Thanks, Uber. My favorite dish is the blackened chicken torta. SO good. I've tried many of the tacos and the rib torta, but the chicken one is seriously the best on the menu. Pair this with queso and you're going to f***ing die. Last, Bakersfield is SO busy. All the time. Expect like a 2hr wait. Put your name down and go for a walk. Buy something at Silver in the City. Buy me something at Silver in the City. Then, when they call you, get a torta and a marg. You're welcome.

Bakersfield is one of those places that feel right for so many occasions. They are expanding soon and that will be great as there is almost always a wait. The menu is simple--guac, salsas, tacos, tortas (sandwiches) and salads. I always struggle on ordering 2 or 3 tacos, but decided on a recent visit that if I have guac and chips, 2 tacos is sufficient. They have some outdoor seating and a bar outside, too.

Always with delicious food. Delicious! Tacos are authentic and remind me of the goodness of food back home in California. I love the short rib taco so much!! The margaritas are nice. Place is almost always packed. It's got a pretty douchey vibe sometimes, but what can you do?

Ok Bakersfield, you won me over. After my last review, I must say I was extremely impressed with the excellent customer service. I was immediately contacted by, not the manager of the restaurant, but the OWNER himself. He apologized for my "not so great experience" and told me his general manager would be contacting me. Well, less than a day later I was contacted by the general manager of the restaurant who asked me for my address so he could mail me a gift card. A few days later a $50 gift card arrived. I was so taken aback, I have never received such excellent customer service in my life. It was awhile before I made my way back into Bakersfield and it was a spontaneous trip so I was unable to use my gift card as I did not have it with me. We sat at the bar, which I am now convinced is the best place to be when at Bakersfield. Our bartender was on top of it! Our margaritas were so strong and incredibly fresh! Not like the last ones at all! My husband got the melanaysa (I think that's what it is called) torta. Omgeeee it was the best torta I've ever had in my life!!! I can't wait to go back so I can order that torta myself! So why four stars? Well, I'm still not convinced the Bakersfield's tacos are the best as everyone had previously told me. However, their margaritas and their tortas are on point. Their customer service is astounding and with service like that I understand why the place is always packed. It is a downtown staple and I look forward to going again!

Hmm.. what to say about Bakersfield that hasn't already been said here? If you're looking for a Mexican spot that is different from traditional fare, this is the spot for you. Make no mistake about it, you won't find refried beans, rice and smothered enchiladas at this joint. The queso is different but delicious. Also love the guacamole. But, the tacos are by FAR the best thing on the menu. I wish I could order all 8 at once. But since I have to choose, the Pastor (pork & pineapple) and Fish are the best of the best. I'm actually not as crazy about the margaritas as some people. They're a little sour for my taste. That also doesn't stop me from ordering at least one every time I come. A warning - there is always, always, ALWAYS a wait here. The great thing about it though is that they take your phone number, so you're free to explore Mass Ave. and stop in elsewhere for a drink while waiting for your table. I wish more restaurants would adopt something like this. Sitting in the basement is my favorite part, it feels like a Mexican speakeasy. Can't wait to return!

I ordered the short rib taco and the pork belly taco. The short rib taco was delicious. The pork belly taco was pretty good, though I'll admit I'm usually not a huge fan of pork belly. I also wound up getting a braised chicken taco somehow that I didn't order that was decent. I've never been impressed by chicken tacos, so I never order them. I also got chips and salsa, which probably should be free and not $3. It came with a roja and a verde salsa, both of which were a little sweet for my taste. Overall a cool place though. I'd come back for more short rib.

Some of my favorite summer nights have been on the patio of Bakersfield. I love the atmosphere and vibe of the establishment. Tia the manager is AWESOME (ask her about a mango margarita...they are AMAZING). Bakersfield is definitely the best place to celebrate Cinco de mayo! When it comes to food...you can't go wrong. I am a huge Mexican food lover! I love the non-traditional style tacos they serve. Fish tacos are my fave. :)

Been here a few times and been pretty happy. Sometimes the service can be a tad bit on the slow side. Things I've had: Chips and Salsa: Standard type of salsa Chips and Guacamole: Fresh, delicious, and creamy with chunky avocado bits Chips and Queso: Warm and rich Johnny Salad: DELICIOUS! Hits the spot when you're looking for some greens (minus the almonds, I'm allergic) Fish Taco: Tasty, but not as seasoned as I'd like Short Rib Taco: Hearty portion of meat! Corn Taco: Great veggie option packed with flavor, I'd pick the meat ones over this one, but if I couldn't eat meat I would definitely give this one a whirl Parking is on the street, metered. Great for some people watching and hanging out with friends on a leisurely afternoon.

Ask for the jalapeño margarita! It's amazing. Warms you up from the inside out :) The guacamole is good. It can get very crowded on the weekends. So, plan on standing outside in their patio area and waiting for awhile.

I wish I lived much much closer to this place. I love the tequila selection and the queso is fabulous. Amazing tacos, the kind that you would expect out of the best food truck on the west coast, a bit expensive but I still feel worth it.

I went to Bakersfield for the 1 st time with friends for lunch, we all loved it, and will definitely go back!! They have the best margaritas, very innovative, and delicious tacos, two great salsas with their chips.......YUM......... Ben, the manager greeted us, he made us feel so welcome. Our waitress gave us great service too. Can't wait to try other things on the menu, and sit outside when their patio opens!!

I absolutely love Bakersfield!!! I have been there number of times now. I love the atmosphere for starters. I got the rosé sangria and tried the Bakersfield Margarita- LOVE them both. We ordered tacos, I had the fish taco and pastor. They where wonderful! I have tried some others as well... Mole and a couple others I don't remember. Guac is great, drinks are great, one of my favorite things about eating here is the card of a celebrity with a drink recipe on the back. Great choice for food and drinks.

A little piece if heaven on earth! I have ventured from the tacos on their menu and still found it to be amazing! What a great addition to Mass Ave. I am thankful for the great service I have always received here, and the delicious Margs of course. Get the pitcher instead of just a glass, they make them better that way! You can not visit here without filling up on some queso or quac before your tacos either! I wish they had outside seating, but they have a nice area to enjoy a drink and nice ledge to lean on :)

I LOVE Bakersfield. Highly recommend the fish tacos and the guacamole. I've tried all of the tacos and none of them will disappoint! The margaritas are fantastic. Also strong :) My recommendation is to arrive early if you go at dinner time. This place is so popular that the wait times can get long! But don't worry, your meal will be well worth it!

Bakersfield is tops for tacos. Plus the Guacamole is always really, really good. But be prepared to have a terrific house Margarita while you wait because you most certainly will wait. The wait is pleasant with an ample bar and lots of outside patio space. By the way, the patio space does have full service so if the wait is too much go ahead and have chips and Guacamole while you wait. The decor is fun and there is a decent craft beer list. But, Tequila is off the charts here. Don't order too many tacos because they come out fast. So, get two and then decide if you have room for another. My favorite is the Cochinita Pibil but the Mole is terrific. Andele and get on over to Bakersfield. You will be glad you waited.

  • Belinda R.

Typically a pretty packed house. If you're willing to wait with a margarita or two you will not be disappointed! Margaritas are pretty much the best in indy and their tacos were delicious! Bartenders are very attentive and even when busy it's not hard to get service at the bar.

  • Robert W.

Ok, let me get this straight, you have an $11 premium margarita that's just "amazing" but you charge $12 for a shot of Patron? Then when ask about the discrepancy the manager states that through the distributor, Patron costs more than more premium tequila. Go to Crown Liquor and see what's the difference in cost for Patron to Milagro. You will not see a $4 dollar shot difference, but you'll definitely see it here. In all 2 Pacifico's, 2 Glasses of $8 each wine and 2 shots of Patron = $53. If you want to waste money on drinks please come here. If not, you can walk to Marsh which is two minutes away and get a 6 pack of Pacifico, a bottle of the same wine and a bottle of Patron for $10 less.

We love it here! I thought I'd hate it once Bazbeaux moved across the street, but I've been here so often and it never disappoints. The margaritas are stellar, we ordered a pitcher this time - not that there's a price break or anything, but hey, pitcher of AMAZING margaritas. The flavor is divine. The guacamole is one of the best in town but if you have more than 2 people, you must get the guac WITH an order of the queso. We mix black beans in ours - ohmygod. The cheese is to die for. Honestly, you could make a meal out of those items right there. The tacos seem small, but three will do you just fine. The vegetarian options are flavorful and I'm happy to report that you don't have to do a boring beans and cheese combo. Delightful. I hate to say it, but I don't branch out while I'm here. I know what I like, it's all very good, I order the same thing every time. I think the service staff is great but there will be a wait at this spot most of the time. Luckily if the weather is nice you can stand out front with your drinks in their little "patio" area. They have a space downstairs for larger gatherings and it definitely has a great party atmosphere inside.

Went on a Friday night. The wait was about an hour and 15 minutes. No big deal as we knew this would be the case and so went across the street and had some drinks at McNivens. The Bakersfield hostess called my cell when our table was ready and gave us 15 minutes to settle up our bar bill and walk over to the restaurant. All the food was great (tacos) but I especially liked the guacamole and margarita. Crowd was young, joint was loud.

Super cool place! Trendy crowd and atmosphere. Yelpers are spot on -- their margaritas are absolutely amazing! Go get yourself one. Like...now.

I can't see what's not to like about Bakersfield. The menu is small but offers great selection. The drink prices are very reasonable with $2 pints of PBR and tasty house margaritas at $6. Chips and salsa $3. You just about can't beat it. The inside is clean and stylish with a friendly staff. It's worth walking around Mass Ave and hitting up the Portlandia store if there's a wait at Bakersfield. Hipster trap or not...I'd still go back in a heartbeat. I wished my fish taco had a little more fish but then the mole blew my face off and I forget about what I was left wanting for. Two people can eat for well under $50 even with a couple of drinks.

Bakersfield has the best margaritas in town. The bartenders are friendly and make you feel at home. With the added patio, which has added a fun and roomy atmosphere, I would completely suggest grabbing a drink here. Aside from the bar scene, Bakersfield has tasty food. My personal favorite is the chips and guacamole followed by a few short rib tacos. I don't think there is a wrong choice on the menu so kick back, drink up and have some fun!!

Went on a saturday night and it was hopping. A really nice crowd, didnt have to wait too long to get a table. We went outside with our pitcher of margarita and waiter, made time go by fast. I had the Torta and queso both were really good. I am going back again for sure.

Hit this place three times last week! Great atmosphere, great skinny margaritas, and the guacamole and cheese, omg. Tacos are a must, and they come out within minutes of ordering. I would recommend this place to anyone. It gets packed fast, so go early!

Mexican in Indy. Being from L.A. I am always on the hunt for good Mexican food in new cities. Bakersfield was damn decent. We had a slew of tacos, which range from $3 and up, and were impressed with their taste and legit status. Their salsas were both tasty and fresh, and true salsas, not the pico de gallo that most people associate with salsa. Their green tomatillo sauce was really good. The margaritas were stiff and made with agave and real lime juice, which is also a plus. Cool ambience, a bit upscale meaning this is not a taco "joint". I can see this place as my go to margarita spot for happy hour and it's in the trendy Mass Ave. area. I want to add that the tacos are on corn tortillas - the only way they should be served, in my humble opinion - and handmade to boot. Also, our waitress, I want to say her name was "Steph"anie, I believe, was also on point.

I have been here twice now, and both times have been fantastic. I was referred here by friends when I was new to downtown. The tacos and guacamole are so awesome and the reason I returned with my mother when she came in town to visit. She still talks about eating here! The one thing I wasn't crazy about was the margarita. I didn't feel that it met the hype surrounding it. I will return and I recommend everyone try it out! They do not take reservations so get there early on popular nights. The wait will be long.

I was recently introduced to Bakersfield Mass Ave by a friend, and let me just say.....we hit it off, big time. First off, the guacamole will blow your mind. I love margaritas but usually pass on ordering them due to the gross mixes/food coloring that usually comes with them. They are LIGIT here. I demand you order a pitcher. Tacos are stellar too. Good stuff, folks.

Apparently I am old, and don't get all the completely positive reviews for this place. It's a Mexican themed bar with barrel tables and chairs, that is named 'Bakersfield' and plays pop/rock music. IDK. Margaritas were good. Queso was very good. We did not eat anything else.

If Jonny Cash fought in the Alamo and created a restaurant, it would be called Bakersfield. We did have to wait about 30 minutes for a table even at 7pm on a Wednesday, but with the bars across the street we did not have any trouble killing time. It is a very small building which does the best to utilize all square feet. The décor is very unique, western, Mexican, and a John Wayne movie playing on the TVs. I did not know how a mainly taco restaurant which also served Whiskey and Tequila would marry, but it was a great creation. The margaritas are served in a Ball jar and are a good homemade mix and plenty strong for the $6 price. I will say I was not blown away with their draft beer selection, but then again it's a tequila and whiskey restaurant. We started with the cheese queso which was served in a cast iron skillet the temperature of lava so the top was caramelized; the house pickled jalapenos were a tasty addition as well. The server, Sarah, found out it was my wife's birthday and asked tequila or whiskey and brought out a complementary shot, now thats so much better than a dessert and goofy song any day. My wife ordered the Johnny salad which she liked and said the addition of hearts of palm and avocado was a nice combination. I ordered a Fish, Cochinita Pibil, and short Rib taco. Their braised short rib is flavorful and well balanced though I do wish it had a little more heat. The fish taco was our favorite, though I would recommend them all. The tacos are saucer sized so order accordingly. I would recommend this to anyone looking to grab a bite in Mass Ave or even drinks. Thanks Sarah for your recommendation and attentive service.

Back again and again it delivers! Margaritas and fab tacos. I can't wait to get home to do some lazy Saturday sipping and eating here again with my BFF. The soup is great on its own or on chips. The queso is like its own cheesy goodness that could be a meal itself! Best 30 spent!

The trendy spot to go late at night, but that's what makes it so good. Bakersfield is definitely out of my age range, but it's a great spot for tacos and delicious guacamole after the other bars close. Good beer selection and my husband was impressed by the fact that they had huitlacoche tacos on the menu. I had a chicken and a pork taco and both were quite good. Having grown up in SoCal and having tried my fair share of tacos, I would say that Bakersfield tacos could hold their own against the varied and delicious offerings in Southern California. The interior aesthetic of the place is nice too, with a beautiful bar. The only disconcerting thing is the stairwell is in the middle of the room, on the way to the ladies' room. It's like a giant one-way hole to the basement. Steer clear, especially after a couple of margaritas.

Great bartenders and the best Margaritas in Indy. The food is really good too. The queso and chips are great. Everything on the menu is made fresh, much better than "bar food."

I was confused walking into this place. Outside had a ton of young adults drinking and hanging out. Inside were even MORE people drinking and hanging out. To the side there are some tables where there are more people still drinking- but also eating. Be warned- this place is NOT CHEAP. The menu consists of some mexican starters and some salads but most of the focus are on their street tacos. Our waitress was super friendly and patient with our group of 8 that had no idea what to order. Queso & Guac were really good. If you had to pick one.. get the Queso. It's definitely not your typical melted cheese. Short Rib Torta - it was good. I got kind of tired of the meat after the 2nd half so i'd recommend sharing this item so you can try something else on the menu. We ordered at least 1 of every taco and the favorites were: 1. Fish 2. Pastor 3. Short Rib I have definitely had better tacos but in Texas from a run-down authentic food truck. These tacos are definitely a little more "modern" They have revolving taps and a good selection of beer. A great hangout spot but I wouldn't say it's a great place for dinner.. maybe just snacks and a couple of drinks.

Already been here 3 times since relocating to the Crossroads of America...if you need more incentive than that to get your hiney over here, just check out how popular they are with all their raving yelp reviews! As if Bakersfield needs anymore said about them, I will add briefly that it is mexican food, with a few modern twists, executed perfectly. The tacos are not the size of authentic taco cart tacos you get from the mexican family in the parking lot....but they are really well made tortillas and the fillings are fantastic. Both pork tacos, the short rib taco (OMG DROOL), and the fish taco were all memorable bites. They are big enough to get a bite or two and pass the rest off to a neighbor, yet small enough that its not glutinous. With such stellar ingredients in quality, you don't need massive pounds of the stuff to be satisfied....just ask my 6'5 taco companion. Great salads too. I've always showed up on a work night so I have not indulged in any of the drinks of their menu...my date, however, has gotten in a pattern of ordering whatever they have on tap - great local selections of course. It is small with somewhat limited seating. All of my visits so far had me walking in the door after 9pm, and it was still poppin off in there. I'm guessing any earlier and the wait will be a while...the food is very fast though, and you can eat at the bar....they have a cool place to schmooze outside with a beverage if you're just hangin out or waiting for a table.

Great food! I'm a big fan of the cilantro sauce, queso, and tacos! Downside is I'm not a huge fan of the tortillas. Otherwise great restaurant and a great staff!

Not bad, but nothing special. There is a long wait something like 45 minutes. The wait wasn't worth the food, but the food wasn't bad. The price for margarita pitchers is outrageous; 24 bucks a pitcher. I had two different tacos one kind was decent the other wasn't that impressive. I think the one that was good was the pork? Can't really remember. I'd probably go back, but I wouldn't make it on the top of my list nor would I go out of my way to go here. The decor is really nice, and the service was good. It's worth at least one visit to check out and experience.

This is a cool restaurant. It's definitely a place for twenty-somethings. It can get packed and it can get loud. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night, plan on waiting a couple hours. All that said, the food is amazing. Very unique and very flavorful. I've not been able to get past the tacos yet but would love to try some other menu items. They have some decent drinks as well. I'll be back, most likely for lunch on a weekday.

Get to know your neighbors. I really wanted to like this place. I love Mexican food, especially well done tacos with homemade tortillas. However, the experience just wasn't very inviting. The service was great and the food was ok, but the tables are so closely placed to one another. My girl and I sat down at what would be a four top. They parted the two top tables by about six inches. We watched as they attempted to sit another couple and they refused. They finally were able to sit another party of two, and we were literally elbow to elbbow. We could partake in their conversation and visa versa. On top of this was loud music and hipsters as far as the eye could see. The food was ok, but it is not worth another visit for me. Give the patrons some breathing room.

This is a cute little place. You can order tacos, but I recommend ordering at least 2 or more. This will be a cute place to go to during the day or weekend. It's knowns as a Tequila Taco spot. I had one of the chicken tacos and it was full of flavors and had a little kick to it. I didn't really care for their fish tacos, it was bland to me. Definitely order chips and queso to have a snack. I def want to go back and try their other dipping sauces. Service was ok, wasn't as attentive as I thought it would be.

Bakersfield was great! Friendly hostess, awesome waiter. Good beer. Small menu with the assurance that while it is small, everything is good. A la carte makes it a build your own meal, but also, build your own price. Suggested order was 3~4 tacos make a meal, but, I got one taco, chips and guac and a local beer and was well satisfied. The taco had pineapples, pickled onions and marinated pork on a homemade corn tortilla. It was delicious, but, a little messy. The chips and guac were nothing to write home about. The guac didn't have a single onion (I like almost as much onion as avocado) and was kind of bland, while the chips were over-salted (but still yummy, they just over-powered the guac). They bring two bottles of salsa to the table, one an extremely mild avocado salsa and the other a delicious smoked chipotle deal. I found I liked the smokey salsa better than the guac and ate almost half the bottle with the chips (they paired very well together). The atmosphere was great. Old John Wayne western playing on the TVs, decent recent-ish music (Noticed Cold Play and The Shins, but never was anything loud and obnoxious or anything 'retro' playing). I sat at a stone-top table set on top of an old 55 gallon wooden keg/barrel.

I ate dinner here on a Wednesday. It was surprisingly crowded even though it was snowing and 15 degrees. The layout is pretty simple with brick walls, but it has a romantic vibe to it. The bar has two TV's that were showing a black and white movie with no sound. I understand that adds to the style of the place, but I still wish they would show a ballgame on their TV's instead. Sue me. I like the sports. Bakersfield's prices are pretty strong for their food and drinks. You can eat for under $10. PBR drafts are $2. They are known for their tacos, but I ordered a milanesa torta (basically a breaded chicken panini). It was great although I could have done without the avocado lemon mayo. Our server did an excellent job. I'll be back!

Four stars for delicious fish tacos and strong fresh margaritas in Ball jars. Also: the staff. Really nice 'tenders and servers. The crowd can get a bit douchy here, but: the fish tacos. They also have decent rotating taps. I have to say I am quite a fan of screens playing old movies as decor. I like old movies. I find them kind of soothing. The selections here, it being a bourbon and tequila bar with a Tex Mex menu, are old westerns. I guess I don't mind a little young Paul Newman with my beer and guacamole. Nice location, looking right out onto Mass Ave. It can be hard to get a seat on some nights and weekends. The veggie tacos could be more interesting and flavorful. And: the crowd. The crowd makes me want to knock my rating down to three stars. But if you go at the right time, order the fish tacos and a margarita or delicious beer -- and, heck, a shot of nice tequila -- you can bliss out to some Butch Cassidy and/or conversation and go home happy.

The food was pretty good, but the service was mediocre. The waitress was pushy about getting our orders when I had barely glanced. Whenever we asked a question about what something was, she would sigh in annoyance and just said it's good, just try it. I ordered water, for which I never got a refill. Luckily my friend ordered a beer and wasn't really drinking her water. I ordered the chicken cochinta tacos (I think that is what they were called) and they had good flavor. However, they were small for $4. My friend got the fish tacos and said they were also good. Their salsas for the chips were great! Overall the food was good, but with unfriendly atmosphere and service, I probably won't be coming back.

Very authentic flavors and presentation. I had two different chicken tacos, each with its own unique flavor. Both really tasty. There are two bottles of salsa on your table. One tomatillo based (milder) with bright flavor and the other a smoky chipotle (little hotter). Both were also unique, and tasty. Service was quick and friendly. They charge for chips and salsa, which put my lunch with a drink and two tacos at $12.25 before tip. Therein is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. Tacos are about $4 each and rather small, so free chips to go along with the salsa already on the table would get 5 stars from me.

"Eagerly anticipated" would be an understatement. Originally hailing from a mere 65 miles north of Bako (as many San Joaquin/Central Valley peeps refer to the place) I was tickled pink to see a familiar name crop up here in my adopted city... FYI-Mexican food is to Californians what Indian food is to Londoners: Mother's Milk. Or sticking with the metaphor: Mother's Margaritas. Luckily, the margaritas here do not disappoint: large, flavorful, intoxicating and served in a Ball jar with a straw? A+ And that was just the entry level "Bakersfield Margarita." A great start for this welcome addition to Mass Ave and better than most places in Indy with "Mexican" fare. One of the things I appreciated most was that the food was not over-salted. (So many places these days make me feel like Bambi--a salt-lick may work for deer, but not so well for humans). Both of the vegetarian tacos had unique flavors--truffle being my fave--but wish that they'd stuck with the typical size corn tortilla rather than the pequeñito. (They could put the same amount of ingredients on the larger tortilla, because with this size, some goodies are most certainly going to end up oozing out the other side.) The variety outpaces what you'll find in the rest of the taco-heavy menus in Indy The generous portion of chunky guacamole was excellent--fresh squeezed lime was easily discernible, but a second flavor wasn't--whatever it was, it worked, and I haven't encountered it elsewhere. Sadly, the chips taste store bought--they are dry--I wonder if they bake them? The two "salsas" (made daily, I was told) administered via squeezy bottle, were better paired with the tacos than eaten straight on the chips--an accompaniment rather than the main feature. The red one was touted as spicy, but I found it mild. The salsa verde had a tinge of sweetness, where I would have opted for spicy. The queso texture is reminiscent of hummus--which I'd never experienced before--but that made it easier to scoop and keep on the chip. Different isn't always bad, but some sliced jalapeños on top would have amped up my affection for it. Considering the late night weekend hours (and weeknight hours) this is going to be A #1 on my list for late night drinks and food. So grateful to have a late night affordable option that isn't a slice of cardboard pizza or a hamburger. Loved the atmosphere created by the remodel--like what they did with the space and decor--bright colors, interesting lights, rough sawn woods, alcohol on display all over the place--like the candy stores of olde, but for adults...who like to drink. The place has so wholly transformed, I had almost forgotten its last life, formerly housing Bazbeaux... until a trip to the ladies. Whether due to the age of the building or budgetary constraints, a bar with only one commode is never friendly. (God forbid someone gets Montezuma's Revenge.) Summary: Drinks: Outstanding. Food: Very good. Value for money: High. Hours: Praise be! We so needed this! Decor: Dig it. Acoustics: Challenging on a busy night Staff: Kicking ass and taking names--look like they are having a great time and are loving the place.

We had an incredible experience! It took us four different occasions to finally be able to get a seat but it was well worth it! That place is so busy for a reason. The tacos were amazing. The margaritas were great. The tequila shots were even better! We will be back!

It seems "street tacos" are the new mac and cheese with many places adding to the menu and a new genre of restaurants opening with this as the primary dish. Bakersfield falls into the latter category and the Indy location delivers a decent, yet unspectacular effort. The Indy location is relatively small and could stand to expand its space so more might be accommodated or at least not be forced to share picnic tables with random others.

What a wonderful experience. My friend and I showed up at 6:30 on a Wednesday and waited about 20 minutes for a table. When we were seated we ordered Bakersfield margaritas and boy, they were stellar!! I wanted another one when I was finished with my first. Cute points for the sweet little Ball jar presentation. In terms of food we ordered the chips and queso to start. The queso has a unique texture, not smooth like a traditional queso, but more grainy and hearty. It doesn't sound super appealing but the cheese was wonderfully seasoned and delicious and honestly the texture didn't bother me at all. For tacos we ordered the mole, fish, pastor, cochinita pibil, short rib, and huitlacoche. All of them were insanely good. My favorite was probably the short rib, like whoa.

Finally visited Bakersfield and what a great addition to Mass Ave. Fits in w/ the Mass Ave vibe perfectly. More professional/upscale but also chill and not too stuffy. Atmosphere: Liked the rustic old western feel. When you enter, there is a bar area to the right and dining area to the left. There is also additional seating in the basement. If you can't find seats upstairs, go downstairs to see what they have. There are movies/music playing in the background that reminds you of the Wild Wild West. The noise wasn't as loud as I expected. We were able to have conversations just fine. Food: Tacos were as good as advertised. They came in 4" tortillas and were loaded w/ meat or veggie of your choice. They were more substantial than any food truck or gourmet tacos that I had elsewhere. And for $3-$4, the price was actually reasonable. I have gotten smaller tacos that were more expensive. You can also choose chips and dip to round out a fairly concise menu. Drinks: A dizzying selection of Tequila and Whiskey. Also on the menu are craft cocktails, beer, and margarita. For the budget conscious, pick the $2 PBR in a special boot glass. The boot will be the attention getter in your party. Service: The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. When we arrived, we were supposed to wait an hour for a table, but they let us take over the small tables by the entrance. The wait staff stopped by promptly to take our orders, and food/drinks arrived quickly. Seemed like the staff was trained pretty well prior to their opening of their doors. Overall, a great experience at Bakersfield, and definitely going back. Because of the buzz, there might be a wait to get in and it can get crowded on the weekends. When the weather gets better, there will be more space in the outdoor area.

I have always enjoyed the fun loving atmosphere and the food at Berksfield. I have had the pleasure of visiting on several occasions, and my girlfriends and I are particularly fond of the absolutely scrumptious margaritas that are available by the pitcher (yes I did just say pitcher). On several occasions I have sampled their menu and have been throughly impressed by their artisan tacos and queso. I highly recommend any of their pulled pork tacos served with a local beer (Flat 12 often facilitates my local beer desire). If you are looking for a downtown hangout spot with the feel of a bar, the food of an artisan chef, and the charm of Mass Ave, this is your spot.

SO, this is my new favorite place. Service was really good, and the food spectacular. Amazing tequila selection, and I'm pretty pumped for a margarita spot that isn't a 30 minute drive. Things I loved: Queso with chorizo. Delish. Truffled Corn Tacos - thumbs up. Short Rib Torta - 2 thumbs up. Honestly, in the several times we have been there, we haven't tried anything that was disappointing. Another thing I am super in love with here is the TVs featuring spaghetti westerns and the amazing music. Willy, Waylon, Dolly, Loretta and even Gram Parsons? Heck yes. Cool underground bar and extra tables space makes this a neat, exciting new place for Mass Ave. and Indianapolis.

O.M.G. I couldn't LOVE this place any more!! This little gem opened up on Mass Ave a few months ago and it is THE BOMB! Seriously. First of all, the staff is amazing. A few of them already remember my name, but maybe it is because I cannot stop going there. I love the Western decor, atmosphere, outside standing area (with heaters), basement with a really cool bar, seating area and tequila stash...not to mention the upstairs seating with large windows for people watching on Mass Ave....not that I have done this though. I am always having way too much fun. The menu is simple. I have literally tried 80% of the items on the menu and the guacamole and tacos are my favorites. Their guacamole is among the best in downtown Indy and it comes to the table super fast! The salsas and sauces are awesome as well. The queso is not my favorite...just okay. Among the tacos, the Pastor is my ultimate fave, but I also love the Mole, Fish and Short Rib. The Tortas are more like a sandwich, incase you don't know. I have tried both the Milanesa and Short Rib. I loved both, but the Short Rib seemed to have too much bread for me and not enough meat. The Milanesa is great with the green sauce they bring out with it. YUM! As for drinks, enjoy a $2 PBR in a boot glass or select from their other awesome craft beers on tap. If you want a Margarita, the $6 Bakersfield Margarita in a mason jar glass is great. P.S. - I hear it is better than the $12 Premium Margarita, but I cannot confirm this. If you want some small munchies while venturing out on Mass Ave or even a meal, Bakersfield is perfect for it. From what I hear, they serve food late too (like into the AM hours), which is always a plus. In summary, Bakersfield is such a fun place. I love most everything about it. As I have told them before, I am SO thankful they came to Indy!

My girlfriends and I had so much fun there on Saturday. We went to grab a quick lunch, but ended up staying a few hours. (We even came back later that night.) I've probably been to Bakersfield a dozen times, and there's a reason I keep going back. The food and service are both consistently good. Three tacos make up a filling meal if I've had an appetizer/ drinks. (Short rib is the best...I also love the rajas.) The queso is good but the guacamole is better- start with this! Bakersfield's guacamole is fresh-tasting with cilantro and big chunks of avocado. The chips are always served warm and salted. The margaritas are tasty and definitely not weak! I also love the "theming" of Bakersfield. The tables are old whiskey barrels, the TV plays old westerns, and the music is usually Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson -esque. This summer they opened up a new, cozy patio (with a bar) in the back alley that provides a fun alternative to their indoor dining- which can be a bit cramped at times. If you're looking for fun, please-all dining or you're entertaining friends or a group, Bakersfield should definitely be on your list.

Let's start out with the pressing question: Does Mass Ave need a mexican restaurant? YES. In fact, they still do. I would say the food here is more loosely based off Mexican concepts. I mean, take it for what it is. they're not saying they're authentic mexican food, but it's still just too far removed to have mexican being used to describe it. I had some of the veggie tacos and I honestly can't say there was anything wrong with them. but there also wasn't anything all that great with them either. For all the combination of peppers and such in the taco, there wasn't a lot of flavor. Food aside, the restaurant is VERY noisy. Not loud music or anything, just so loud from all the people though i feel it would be loud even with less people. It makes it very difficult to carry on a conversation with someone sitting virtually in your lap without shouting. Which brings me to my next point, the seating. We arrived at 5:15pm on a thursday. we knew going into it that it would be busy, but we ended up waiting for about an hour and 15 min. When we did get seated, it was at one of the barrel tables. you know the type of table, it's a barrel with a round plank of wood on it. great for 2-3 people. There were 5 of us. I ended up using the window ledge to keep my drink because there was not enough room on the table for everyone's food and drinks. Would I come back for a drink? Absolutely. but maybe on the patio where it's not so loud. Would I come back to eat? Sure, if all of the other mass ave establishments have lines out the door and somehow bakersfield has a less than 1 min wait. If the food was amazing, I would chalk it up to "ok, so i just had bad timing on the experience" but unfortunately, i'll probably never know as there are just so many other good places on mass ave.

While I would *LOVE* to have a hard-on for this place like everyone else, I only got mildly aroused. I'd give this place two and a half stars, but I'm rounding down. Let's consider it opportunity for growth. Yeah, yeah, it's only been open for a little while. Yes, I'll go back and give it another chance, but I was expecting better after reading these reviews. Here's what I like: 1) The decor. This place invested a lot of time and money into rehabilitating the old Bazbeaux's. They achieved a hip and trendy decor that is welcoming, fun to look at, and properly lit (improper lighting is a pet peeve of mine). 2) The menu: I like the variety in the menu. A little bit more variety than Revolucion, and more variations on their tacos. 3) The booze: Seriously, did you look at those shelves of booze? If you put a real mixologist in there, they could be onto something. The only bourbon I found missing was Pappy. 4) The service: We were seated quickly and our waitress was fast to take our drink and food orders; she also knew the menu in and out. Here's what I don't like: 1) The food: For the price, I was expecting something more substantial. At Revolucion, I pay 8-something for two street tacos that I consider a meal (plus that awesome little pinwheel crispy that is so frickin' delicious). Here, I pay three or four something for one taco that I get three bites out of. The rather large fellow further down the bench seat from us got about 2 bites out of one taco. I also expect my food to be hot when it gets to me. These tacos came out flat on a metal tray and both of my tacos were luke warm at best. I should have stopped at the queso and black bean appetizer - that was the star of the meal. 2) The noise: I *love* me some Johnny Cash, but Johnny Cash would never sit at my table and scream at me for my entire meal. So, don't blare music at me the entire time. I could barely hear what my companions were saying. Holy crap it's loud in here. Also, while I love Johnny Cash, this place played about 8 Johnny Cash songs while I was there. It's like this restaurant just decided to be *That Guy* at the jukebox. At least they went with Cash rather than Phil Collins. 3) The artificial ambiance: Yeah, this place gets a lot right, but so much of it seems so contrived... like they're following a GQ magazine recipe for how to be cool. Step 1) Buy industrial looking lightbulbs. Step 2) Play a lot of Johnny Cash. Step 3) Play it loud. Step 4) Dress trendy. Make your bartenders wear headbands with your logo. This place could still pull it together, but when I have to eat cold food and feel like I'm getting screamed at the entire time, this place isn't going to make my list of favorites. Given the option, I don't think I'd choose this place over Revolucion - unless it's 2 am... I hear this place serves food late on the weekends, which is good... even if it is cold.

If in the Mass Ave area, this is a must! Absolutely fantastic experience. Service was spot on - along with the food. Not a huge menu, a simple 1 pager- but have all the bases covered. Favorite is the short-rib taco. To start, the queso and guac are both delish. Really enjoyed this small space, and they show old western films to set the mood. Let's not forget that PBR is served in boots! How fun. And it totally tastes better, right? I'll be back- again and again. And will bring all my friends. Yeehaw!

This place reminds me of chicago's Taco Joint, in the best way possible, and maybe even better. You might experience a wait on a weeknight, but kick back on the patio with a $2 boot of PBR. It'll tide you over. Once seated, don't miss out on the guac. I'm a huge cilantro and lime lover, and this was some of my favorite guacamole - EVER. Perfectly salted chips were the accompaniment, and there was more than enough for two of us with hefty appetites. The margarita was also fantastic - could have easily slurped 17 or so of those down. Tacos: the special (pollo rojo?) and fish tacos were my picks and I couldn't have been happier. Of course, don't expect to look good eating them, because the taco itself is a small soft tortilla shell packed to the brim with toppings - you're going to be fighting a losing battle with sauces and/or other condiments. A couple service snafus are leading me to deduct a star (no issue with the server - she was really patient and polite even when we took a long time to order). There seemed to be a disconnect between the sever, computer system, and busser, which unfortunately left some long delays in our drinks and getting some of the appropriate food. Regardless, my local Indy friend says this has quickly become his favorite restaurant, and I can see why! I'll be back again for the great food and drinks, and hopefully that will give them enough time to work out their service kinks.

Other than the fact their tacos and queso are amazing...the staff is also friendly. They have an excellent patio and a wonderful selection of Tequlia and they make awesome margaritas. Its a nice place to meet friends and relax. Bakersfield on Mass ave is a lot more cool than Bakersfield California!

  • K R.

Yes it's crowded and the wait can be long at times BUT this place has the best margaritas hands down! I recommend the short-rib torta ; the meat is so tender and seasoned well. I've been several times and I've realized I can get full on the home made chunky style guacamole and queso alone. The queso isn't your typical but it's by far the cheesiest and partners well with any alcoholic beverage. The atmosphere is great for late 20 and 30 something's. I'd recommend this place for a guys or gals night out. Nice staff, nice patrons. Don't let the wait deter you it's worth a shot!

This is our new haunt when we went to find an alternative to Revolucion. We love the Fountain Square, but it's time to venture out. The margaritas here are amazing; it's like drinking lemonade that makes you drunk. The tacos are fantastic, too. Oh, and the salsa. Oh, the salsa. It's tasty and not melt-your-face-off spicy. I actually WANT to eat it and more and more of it. I've never had queso like they serve it here; hot in a cast iron skillet. Amazing.

Great food & drinks, awesome service, sexy staff. This place has it all! Try the chorizo chili, soooo good.

This place was packed at 4:45 on a Saturday afternoon! A good portion all came from the show that had just let out at the Murat, but still! We were seated in the basement, which was fine because it was nice and cool. Our server was knowledgeable about the offerings and we started with the chips and salsa and chips and queso. I liked the cilantro salsa. The other salsa definitely had a smoky bite to it. The queso was good, very rich. We didn't finish it and I'm typically a "No queso left behind" type of gal. I tried the fish taco and the huitlacoche taco. The fish was perfectly cooked in the handmade tortilla and the squeeze of lime made it just right. I opted for the huitlacoche because it had truffles in it and I'm a fan. It was good, maybe could have used a bit more substance, but hey, I knew what I was ordering as it was clearly spelled out on the menu. We also had a pitcher of margaritas and don't be fooled folks because this is a serious pitcher and you get these small glasses so be prepared to drink up!! The bathroom is just one stall for the ladies. Kind of surprised there since there are so many customers.

I went to lunch with some friends and they suggested this place. I've never been here let alone heard of it! This place is a hidden gem that I never knew about. The food is delicious and a unique rustic atmosphere. All of the food is fresh and super excellent. Great for lunch. I'd sit at the bar for the most fun time. Apparently, this place has a fun night life! I'll have to check that out later!

  • Sarah W.

The only downside to this place is how busy it always is!! Apparently everyone else knows how good it is too. In short, the margarita pitchers are great, not at all watered down like you would find elsewhere. Also, do yourself a favor and get the chips and queso. Just trust me. Finally, enjoy the weather in patio area out back.

Adrian is an awesome server who went above and beyond! This place rocks your socks off!! Come ask for him and have a good time!

Excellent guacamole and the Bakersfield margarita is top notch. What really shines here is the tomatillio sauces they provide. One is a traditional green while the other is mixed with chipotle peppers for some added kick. I love the traditional one so much that I once used 1/2 a bottle in a visit. There is some secret sauce that people sometimes request. I think it's a really hot . . . . at some point I'll work up the nerve to ask about it (which then means trying it!!). As for the tacos, I've tried 4 of them and the pollo verde, fish and pastor are all solid choices. Staff is friendly and attentive.

  • Nathan H.

This place feels like a hodgepodge of ideas that weren't meant to go together. The western/rustic theme just doesn't work. The tables and bench seats are uncomfortable. The tacos are way overpriced. Upon receiving the tacos, I asked the server which tacos were which, since I ordered different types, and all she said was, "The ones that look different."

  • Rachel Y.

Love their tacos! They are different from anywhere else in Indy. They definitely have a wider range for your palate. The guac is so simple but delicious!! But the margaritas.......are.....amazing! They are super strong so be careful and plan not to drive if you have one! The decor is great, wait staff isn't always friendly but who cares as long as everything else is in point!

  • Travis L.

Love the decor, its what someone from food network would call Mexican fusion. I had been wanting to try this place for some time.. Was finally able to make it in on a Saturday.. Tip: Can get busy during lunch. But for a place that is hand making their tortillas they can put out their food impressively fast and its worth your wait. My personal favorites after trying about half the menu today. The chips and queso with at least the house pickled jalapeños. And my favorite taco with out question is the 'Cochinata pibil' slightly spicy without that we are trying your tastebuds today flavor that is prevalent these days.. Overall you can not go wrong at this place. What I like is a place that does it own thing. Its a simple 1 page menu food on front and drinks on back.. So if your expecting evening reading material from your menu ie. cheesecake factory, you might be disappointed..

Visiting from NYC and loved this place! They're open late on Sundays which was great for my group. We went twice. AMBIANCE: First visit was filled with "frat boys" at the bar...(a football game was on). Second visit was more of what I assume every day would be there. Families, dates, friends, etc. Great chill space, fun bar area. FOOD: Delish!! The queso is UNREAL. A must try! The guac comes in "chunks" so be prepared to smash it. The tacos are small, so order a few so you can try them all. DRINKS: I love a spicy jalapeño margarita and they did not disappoint. YUMMY!!! SERVICE: awesome. We had the same waitress both times. She knew the menu, was super friendly and was aware whenever we needed something.

A mandatory stop for phenomenal tacos and margaritas! I would suggest going earlier in the evening to avoid having to wait a long time for a table. Definitely order the guacamole -- it's chunky with a hint of spice and absolutely delicious. What makes this spot standout is how fresh everything tastes. For me, the best dish of the evening was the vegetarian sweet corn taco; a truly unique option you won't find elsewhere. And, when ordering margaritas ... Go for the pitcher!

Another California visitor that has Bakersfield as a mandatory stop. I'm glad this place is walking distance from my office when I'm in town. I've never had food here that I didn't like and the menu is simple.

One of my go to places for drinks with friends since I live in the area. They have an awesome shot of the day that changes daily that is only 3 bucks and the house margaritas are only $5. They taste fresh and not pre-made. Surprisingly, the tacos always leave me wanting slightly more. Ive had the chicken and fish tacos. However, everyone that I know that has had the short rib taco, loves it. I dont eat pork or beef, so I can't comment. My personal favorite thing to eat there is the chicken torta. It tastes great and it's only $8 and you could easily share it, if you dont have a huge appetite. My other two favorite menu items are the queso and quacamole. This place always seems to be packed, so expect a wait if you can't find anything at either of the bars.

Terrible experience. Weekday lunch was a 20 minute wait hostess was not very glad to see us come in said its a 20 minute wait do you still want a table, took our phone number to call us when table was ready and never called...went to check in and she siad they must've called the wrong number meanwhile the number in front of us was written down correctly with no missed calls, texts or voicemails...

Great atmosphere! Love the industrial look. But, the picnic bench seating makes it difficult to adjust when visitors arrive at different times. The food...for a foodie, I imagine there is happiness. The menu is quite small. The tacos are shrinky and spicy. I had heartburn all night over two mole tacos. As a picky eater, I really wish Bakersfield would offer something simple...even if it is "off" menu. When I do not know what many of the words mean, I am suspicious. Definitely, need something bland for those of us with simple tastes. The servers were somewhat attentive but focused more on the booze drinkers than on we soft drink consumers. I will return for the camaraderie but will eat beforehand.

This place is beautiful on the outside and the inside. The house margaritas are decent and the tacos are over-priced but delicious and well considered. The majority of the clientele are affluent Broadripple-Now-MassAve-And-Soon-To-Be-FletcherPlace-or-FountainSquare Converts (aka douches) formerly seen in the college bars along 62nd St. Or on S. Meridian -- Go on a week night and you're ok. Weekends become insane, good luck getting drink orders in or 3 word conversation from the wait staff (though I feel for them and completely get it)

    (3)
  • Kirby M.

The chips and guac are delicious! Every time I've been here, the food, drinks, and service are always great. The only thing is the music. It's always very loud (and never very good) and it's hard to have a decent conversation without being outside on the patio. It definitely won't keep me from going back though!

  • Abby P.

Went on a Saturday night. The line wasn't too bad. We started outside while waiting for a table. The margaritas were yummy and I was thankful that they were fresh. When we got a table, we went downstairs, which wasn't the best atmosphere. I never really enjoy eating in darkish basements. We ordered chips and salsa, then elote salad. I was trying to make slightly healthier choices, so I thought the salad might be a good bet. (It wasn't---it was served with chips.) It would have been helpful for the server to point this out when we ordered because we had just had chips and salsa. Tacos were tasty--I ordered the fish, but again, didn't realize that the fish was fried. The pollo rojo taco was okay, but it wasn't that good. Overall, the prices were right, the scene was slightly annoying, and the drinks were good.

3 stars is positive from me. Thin tortillas with fresh ingredients. Servers, like Brian, who make an effort to learn your name and if you seem social, even introduce you to other patrons you might enjoy taking to -- good conversation and good food, I like it! House margarita is tart but wonderful. Tacos (order 2-3 per person) are all decent. I'm a mole snob so that one gets a "meh" but the cochinita and short rib tacos make up for it. Pickled veggies -- yes! On a summer night, enjoy a drink outside or the breeze through the full length windows.

Went to Bakersfield on a Tuesday evening thinking - its Tuesday it won't be crowded. Oops - for some reason I was downtown early and restaurant seemed packed with the after work crowd. Sat at the bar instead of waiting for a table (for one). As said in a billion Yelp reviews: The chips and guacamole are awesome and I think I could make that a meal in itself - just keep ordering the same item again and again. Huge chunks of guacamole - its making me hungry just to think of it! The place was busy so I didn't get a chance to ask the bartender re: menu so I ordered a vegetarian taco (huitlacoche) and noticed the price on the menu seemed awfully low. Then when it arrived I finally got it: You are supposed to order multiple tacos. First timer cluefree. So ordered another huitlacoche and also tried the rajas. Excellent tacos and sauces they put on the table were very good. Had a glass of Bodini Malbec $8.00 (not only at Bakersfield but almost all other restaurants: $8.00 for a glass of wine - it better be a good pour). I'll try it again but will shoot for a time when there aren't as crazy crowded / loud. Forgot to checkout the basement - after I left I remembered that Bazbeauz (restaurant formerly at this location) had tables downstairs.

Awesome tacos and great margaritas. What else does one need on a Friday night? The 'urban wild west' decor is pretty cool.

Service: Really good. She checked back without imposing, she was friendly without being obnoxious, she was knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients. We ordered 4 tacos, each "without something" and the order was exactly perfect. We were immediately welcomed by the hostess at the door, and as we were leaving we saw that she was gracefully dealing with a beggar who had come into the restaurant. Food: It's tasty. That queso dip with beans knocked my socks off. The tacos were tasty and spicy. BUT they were kinda cold. I would hesitate to even call them "lukewarm"...definitely in the 40F to 140F "danger zone". Creative ingredients though. Hot sauces are really good and the chips were crisp. My roommate said his salad was very original-lots of arugula with jalapenos and fruit. Environment: It has that "new American rustic" appearance that's trending right now. I like it (it does look like they copied Black Acre a bit). The music was SOOO LOUD though. We were screaming at each other across the table and every other sentence was "Wait, what did you say?" or along the lines of "Did you just say something about a toaster and a mongoose...?" You are also sitting fairly close to your neighbors...which can make for some "moments" when you're screaming at your tablemate and you realize the strangers next to you can hear every word. I dig the music for the most part. Lots of Johnny Cash and only one song prompted me to respond "This song sounds like an Ed Hardy t-shirt looks." Booze: decent selection of craft beers but not huge. The margaritas were pretty good. There's a huge selection of whiskey, mostly bourbon. They were out of their signature "Barrel Aged Manhattan" made with Buffalo Trace so I ordered a regular Manhattan, made with Rowan's Creek (one of my absolute favorites). My bourbon cocktail was not good...in fact, it didn't even taste like what I ordered and I could NOT TASTE THE BOURBON. I noticed that the bartenders were having to carefully read the bottles and search to find the spirit I had requested...probably why the drink sucked. It was watered down and flavorless. A sad waste of a beautiful spirit. This bar has only been open for a month. If the same issues were found in someplace more established, this would have been a 2-3 star review. However, I'm going to cut them some slack and round up because after all, Bakersfield is just a baby. It has a lot of potential to grow into something great. Let's hope it does. Oh yeah...the server said they're going to do bourbon flights in the future. Yay!!!

This is a TACO place?! Decent, at best. We would come back (with earplugs) for a glass of sangria and an appetizer before a night out, but having a cool bar is not the same thing as serving noteworthy food. The only positive I can draw from this experience is that we didn't end up with food poisoning. This is one of, if not the, most overrated restaurant/bars we've ever been to

This place is amazing! Ray and Madison made our time in Indiana amazing! I don't eat tacos in Indy normally but I definitely recommend this place! Great drinks and good food! My one complaint, they named the restrooms Johnny and June but there is a picture of Glen Campbell where Johnny should be! A man stands by his woman

This review is strictly based on food. It's probably good to mention that I'm from Texas.. SO I eat Tex-Mex every day of my life, and real Mexican food about once or twice a week. Everyone in Texas knows that you don't eat Mexican food in any other state, however sometimes you're away from home for 2 days and you just need it! The 3rd star is only because I thought the fish taco was pretty good. The queso is not queso. It's like weird hard stringy melted cheese. What the crap is that? It's like they dumped shredded cheese in a skillet and stirred it around. Salsas were gross. Mole taco was gross. Maybe if you don't live in the south your standards might not be as high and you'll like it? But I prepared myself for bad, and I got worse. If you're going to get food, fish tacos.

Fantastic atmosphere, especially at dinnertime, especially if you like to feel like you're in the middle of the action. (...I don't right now since I have a baby, so I went there for lunch). I had a peaceful lunch there with a friend. Yes, their guac is worth writing home about. Yes, I ate way too many chips. I also had two of their vegetarian tacos. Tasty and artful, but not that filling. Hence the too many chips. But you don't go to Bakersfield because you want to have a filling meal. You really go to drink and have fun.

Thank you Erin for your wonderful service! Your suggestions on what to try were fantastic. This I a great place to hang an just have a drink, have dinner, or share food with a friend and have a great margarita. Cool atmosphere a little Eco got louder after 7 but still not to bad. Wanted to sit outside however, if you sit outside with less that four people you maybe sitting with strangers with competing conversation. We were able to move back inside and had a great time!!!!! Will be going back often.

The extras are the star of this show! The Bakersfield margarita and the fresh guacamole made the experience. My friends and I all got margaritas and shared the guacamole. For all the super-food avocado maniacs out there, I hate to break it to you, but I cannot sit down and enjoy an avocado. This guac totally changed my prospective. It is amazing! I could have just ordered chips and guac and been satisfied. It is seriously that good! I ordered the Milanesa for my main course and it was pretty yummy! The waitress told my friend and I to split one, but we were both pretty hungry and didn't take her advice. I currently have the other half of my sandwich in my fridge because it was a ton of food. We sat on the main floor and didn't fill a table, so the waitress asked us if we would mind sharing our table with another party. We agreed...throwing a few ransoms into your meal makes things interesting. Unfortunately, one person in the couple that sat with us complained the whole time. Luckily, my friends and I were enjoying our margaritas enough that we could ignore (or make fun of her) without it really being a problem. For all you PBR fans out there--they serve the PBR in a boot glass. How's that for a selling point?!

my favorite restaurant in Indianapolis. consistently good. their tacos are creative and the ingredients always compliment each other. I usually order three to fill me up. if you go, definitely get the queso! they have an excellent margarita that isn't watered down like so many other Mexican restaurants my only complaint is that the basement can be loud and the wait is usually 30 minutes or more even on weeknights

Am I missing something?? I was so excited to eat at Bakersfield after seeing my friends Instagram the crap out of it. I was severely disappointed. Pretty sure all the good reviews must be for the atmosphere. On the plus side, the place most definitely feels like you stepped out of Indy. The tacos were definitely lacking flavor. Not worth the cash...at all. For the $$$ I expected some bombass tacos. I had three types and all were just ...meh. Maybe I came on an off day?

Probably the best guacamole I've ever had. Home made and very fresh! I know they're very well knows for their tacos as well but can't say I was extremely impressed. The fish tacos were good and definitely unique in taste but I've had better. Patio was decorated great for the space they hard also!

Love the short rib tacos. The guacamole is pretty amazing as well. Beware the very delicious but also very potent Bakersfield margaritas---if you have to drive home, have one and switch to beer (or water). I'm a pretty regular drinker with decent tolerance and those knock me on my ass. Only downside is that it's insanely crowded and pretty loud, but those things are worth enduring for the tasty food and drink.

Bakersfield has always intimidated me with their crazy, loud, always packed status. However when I tried it last week with a friend, I was relieved to find it less packed with space to breathe for us to catch up. Our waitress could tell we would be mostly talking over eating / drinking, so she came sparingly except to get us more drinks (:D). I was wanting to try one of the margs, but the price was not right, so we opted for PBRs. I ordered the guac which was awesome minus the big big chunks of avocado (I like more creamy guac) but it was well-seasoned and the chips were awesome too. We each got a taco (I'm on a fish taco binge recently) and were impressed, although I think I squeezed a bit too much lime juice. Can't wait to go back again!

Bakersfield After a recommendation from friends, Steve & Karen and the sign, "Tacos, Tequila and Whiskey", I had to give this place a try. They had me with "tacos". As soon as we walked in the door, my friend Lisa and I enjoyed the "Bakersfield" style rockabilly music, Clint Eastwood movies on the TV and the patrons seemed happy. We were promptly seated at a table in a prime location of the restaurant. It was on the street level next to the open windows overlooking bustling Mass Ave. The barrel tables are a bit unconventional. Because the table top doesn't extend past the barrel base I felt awkward leaning far forward over the table to eat. Everything on the menu looked great. I like restaurants that specialize in a few items and prepare them well. Christen, our waitress, after finding out this was our first time at Bakersfield, gave in-depth descriptions of the items. I'm not going to go into detail about the menu because you can check it out for yourself at bakersfieldmassave.com . Christen's "spot-on" descriptions made our decisions more difficult. She asked if we wanted to try the guacamole and chips or the queso. Lisa said "yes". So we had both. That was easy. The chips were warm, crisp and strong enough to hold plenty of the hearty guacamole and queso. The guacamole was fresh with big chunks of avocado, just as the perfect guacamole should be. The queso arrived in a small cast iron dish and was hot and bubbly with bits of yummy, caramelized crusty cheese on top. It's not the runny, white cheese you get at many Mexican restaurants that barely coat the chip. At Bakersfield, I liked to get a big scoop of the cheese on my chip then squirt a bunch of the table red sauce on top. I forgot to mention, on the table are two squeeze bottles of sauce - one green and one red. I preferred the smoky red sauce and Lisa liked the green cilantro based sauce. By the time we were finished with the meal, the once full bottles were now only 1/2 full. They should sell that stuff. I chose the Pollo Verde - tomatillo braised chicken, pickled red onion, queso fresco, crema and radish. Christen said this chicken taco went well with the same smoky red sauce that was on the table. Ok, I'm in. Lisa ordered the Mole - Oaxacan style braised chicken, queso fresco, and cilantro (of course she topped it off with the green table sauce). Both arrived quickly and although we weren't that hungry after the guacamole and queso, we had no problem cleaning our plates. Lisa and I left with full tummies and an eagerness to return. Next time we'll bring our husbands and enjoy the tequila. Because of the efficient service we had a few minutes to shop at Silver in the City before our afternoon of pampering with a massage at our friend's spa, Studio 2000.

I've been here twice and I want to love it, but I can't. The margaritas as the only high point for me. I went in last night and ordered a Templeton Rye--- it was the smallest pour I've ever seen (and came with a $12 price tag). My friend confirmed that this was his experience too, so he only gets PBR since it's reasonably priced. I got two tacos--short rib and fish. Both were super bland--I used the lime they gave me but some salt and some more acid would go a long way on both (particularly the fish which tasted like nothing). I'm bummed because I want to love this place, but I won't eat here again. I might stop in for a margarita when I have a craving in the summer, but do dinner somewhere else...and forget buying booze...pours so small it's not worth it.

I don't get it. I really don't. Bakersfield on Mass Ave. is one of the busiest spots on Mass nearly every night. It is generally standing room only, spilling right to the edge of 'outdoor area' in front. I understand when a bar opens in such a prime location, it will get extra traffic simply because it is new. Some people are just curious and want to try it, while others want to be there simply because it seems to be the place to be. My review is based on quite a few visits. So, I feel I can say with reasonable authority, I don't get it. The bar prices are decent, not great by any means. They usually have a nice selection of local beer on tap; that is a good starting point. However, what locally owned establishment doesn't? This doesn't really set you apart anymore. I hear the mix drinks are made well and generously, so I suppose that drives a little more business. The food, while pretty good, lacks both creativity and value. The tacos are EXTREMELY small and served in a communal/finger-food style arrangement. The tortillas themselves are so small and structurally unsound that every taco ends in a spilling mess. Probably the biggest victory on the menu is the guacamole you can purchase with tortilla chips. It is perfectly salty and freshly made. Large chunks of avocado are found in every bite. When I find myself at Bakersfield, its generally for an order of chips/guac, a beer, and my tab. The truly high point of the bar is its service. These ladies, every night, look like they are about to collapse. The bar is so busy, loud, and demanding. I would expect a nightmare of service. Instead, they serve you in a friendly manner, promptly, and with a true mastery of their menu. The bar tenders seem to actually enjoy their job, despite not having time to take breaths between orders. I actually think the service staff of Bakersfield have the most exhausting job in the city. The environment/theme of the bar is supposed to be this 1950s Bakersfield country style. And while they do a good job of hanging pictures of the greats on the wall and serving you beer in boot mugs, it doesn't translate to the atmosphere. In fact, it is quite the opposite. The past two times I was there, a wedding party filled the upstairs. Last night, I was lucky enough to be in while an owner was present. He was discussing his night of Dave Matthews (or his affectionately discussed 'first dave (live) experience'). The crowd itself is oblivious. They are simply those same people you see at every new 'hot' spot in town. And honestly, I expect these crowds to disappear harshly when the newness wears off. Simply put, the place is at best 'ok'. I really don't understand the hype. And, if Bakersfield ever loses the great staff that they employ, they will be in a world of trouble.

The decor and open windows on Mass Ave make this a highly enjoyable spot to relax with friends and take in the sunshine over lunch. The guacamole was one of the best I've ever tasted. The chips were hot and fresh. We ordered the mole tacos and a veggie taco with a side of black beans. All arrived quickly, were hot, and tasted delicious. Ordered an ice cold coke in a bottle. Price was reasonable for a downtown lunch. Will be back on another evening for margaritas :)

This place in a great location, is open late and has a well executed, simple menu. The combo of great beer selection and addictive guacamole will have me coming back again. They also have something for everyone: meat lover, gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan.

Went here last night. Drinks: Margaritas are a dime-a-dozen, and most use a frozen mix - think Don Pablos and the swirling green gunk in the plastic box behind the bar - but that clearly was not the case here. It's hard to find a quality rita' in this town, but I found it here. Not too sugary, not too sour, overall a really great blend. Plus, they are strong. Like, really strong. As in, stronger than Andre the Giant on a Ryan Braun diet. This is a big plus for me, as I love strong drinks. But if it's your first time here, here's a quick tip: enjoy the taste and savor a quality drink. If you chug them like a pre-packaged green slushie at a Jimmy Buffet concert, you might be wasting away in Margaritaville quicker than a College Freshman at their first frat party. Food: Tacos were great. Full disclosure: I am a picky eater and was a little intimidated by the description of the tacos on the menu. However, I took a dive into the unknown and went for it, full toppings and all. As you read this I can already envision the sarcastic "woah, look at this guy" in your head, but trust me, for a picky eater like myself, this was my Indiana Jones in the snake pit moment. All said and done, the flavors all worked together real well, and weren't nearly as overpowering or adventurous as I thought. I am really happy I took the chance. Atmosphere: Beautiful. It was amazing to see what they did with the space that used to be the old Bazbeaux Pizza. They opened it up (people watchers...) and softened the tones in the decor, but what I loved the most was all the natural light they added to it. Service: Our waitress was nice, friendly, and attentive. That's all I ask for when I go out to eat, a server that is around when you need them, but not standing over your back like the Butler from Mr. Deeds (crappy Adam Sandler version). For: fans of good drinks, good food, and a good atmosphere. Not for: people who dislike hipsters. This place is managed by and caters to the hipster. I am not one, but living downtown for five years, I have learned to live in harmony with their people. Also, we had to wait about half an hour to get a table on a Tuesday evening. Meaning: it's a pretty popular place, so if you want to get in and out quickly, (Obi Wan voice) this is not the restaurant you are looking for. One more note. I would have given this place 5 stars, because the food, drinks, and our server all deserved it. However, while eating, I overheard a conversation between two employees talking about their tips they had just received from a table. Clearly, they did not get compensated well and one of the employees said "yea, they looked like they wouldn't tip well". Kind of a big no no to talk about in public. I understand, wholeheartedly, that servers and bartenders depend on tips for their livelihood, and I agree that the customer who did not tip well deserves to have their photo on a dartboard in the break room, or a toast to their not-so-well being after hours, but just don't do it in the middle of the restaurant. That being said, to that specific customer on the 1-in-a-million chance they're reading this, I saw every server and bartender working their arse off with a smile on their face and a sweat bead on their forehead. I can't imagine what the smiling server I heard talking had done to deserve little-to-no compensation for, and servers need tips to accommodate the hourly wage. If you don't feel that a friendly face catering to your needs deserves to be rewarded for their efforts, then order carry out and go be smug in your own home.

It's a Friday night and I'm feeling like tacos tonight, and Bakersfield is the place I happen to end up at. Thinking at 6 PM that there wouldn't be a wait was a horrible mistake. It ended up being 45 minutes. I guess my assumption that people in Indy tend to eat later in the night was wrong. The wait wasn't bad, as it allowed time for drinks and people watching on Mass Ave, which Bakersfield's outside patio is an excellent location to do so. Initially, I opted for the chips and guac after discussing with one of the servers that I couldn't have any gluten what so ever. Later, after being seated and talking with another server about menu options, she happened to inform me that in fact that the chips had trace amounts of gluten because they are fried in a mixed fryer and thus cross contaminated which was great to know, but it was too late at that point. While there are only a handful of options on the menu, only two were gluten free, the Rajas and the Huitlacoche. The Rajas were bland and the Huitlacoches were ok. The tacos were on the small side and came out on the same serving plate as the others who ordered at your table. This was also a huge no-no as in the food with gluten and non-gluten was touching. While many have given far more stars than me, I just can't due to some of the issues I encountered. I go out enough to know that if not most, but almost always, a restaurant's food is cooked in the same area and that there is always risk for cross contamination, but there was some common sense things that were missed here. You just don't plate gluten food with non-gluten free food.

Super duper! I can't speak too very much about food because honestly I came for the margs! I did however share a HUGE helping of chips and guac with a girlfriend and YUMMM!!! Just little spicy in some bites...truly perfect. We even had leftovers that I brought home to me daughter how declared it the best guac ever...aside from my (smart girl). I'm a huge fan of the house margarita. Just tart and sweet enough. Only reason that it's not a five star is that it was SUPER loud. I could barley hold a convo with my friend. Also, the server asked that we tab out with her so she could take off. That's fine, no big deal but no one else ever came around to see if we wanted anything else. Yes...I would have loved another one of those perfect margs! Return visit in in order for some tacos etc! Very impressed!

The best guacamole in the city! Great addition to Mass Ave. I stop here quite a bit for beers or whiskey. We don't have a tone of ethnic options, so this was a welcome sight. The staff is very friendly and they are sure to take care of you if you wait too long. One night they actually gave us a free order of guacamole because they new we had been waiting so long. They also have a few good beers on tap in addition to the extensive whiskey and mixed drink menu. For food, they have some good options, but it's not a full on mexican menu. It's more of a small plates mexican place. Only thing keeping me from giving Bakersfield a 5 is the fact that it is usually crowded (for good reason) and can often take a while to get in. Once inside it is a bit tight, so it can get loud. Not something they can help, as they are a victim of their own awesomeness. Great stuff Bakersfield.

Tacos were DELISH, like i skepticval at first and i dont even know which one i got but it was so good. My margarita wasnt very strong how i like them, but the food was so good i will definitely be back for a second try with the drinks! Its also very cute inside and a cool spot for Indy downtown!

I've reviewed Bakersfield before... but finally tried one of the two salads and loved it. Next time I'll add the pulled pork from the tacos to it (the bartender told me it's a secret order they'll allow). The tacos are to die for but you cannot go wrong with a salad there either! Margs or beers in a boot- all is good at Bakersfield Mass Ave. The energy is great, good service, quality affordable food, and fun eclectic mix of people.

What a great place Bakersfield Mass Ave is!! I have had the chance to visit 4 times in the last month, it is that great people!! All visits were amazing! I have to say the menu is as simple as they can be, but don't let that fool you because everything on that menu is great and worth it, you'll be amazed! The guac gets my vote for the best, not only in Indy, but in the tri-state area! WOW! (this is the main reason I have been there 4 times in the last month!) Hands down Bakersfield Mass Ave has the best Staff/Service! These are great people. 2 of my visits have been on busy weekend nights and the staff was spot on! Great job, to the weekend Manager who not only managed the large crowd but managed to visit our table showing genuine concern about our experience. I have now introduced Bakersfield Mass Ave to friends visiting Indy and they were just as pleased! Great job!

Hmmmm. Tacos. Tequila. Whiskey...and PBR in boots? What mastermind concocted this place? What can I say? The ambiance is terrific, this joint is always jumping at night and for a daytime drinking destination, it's my current fave. So let's see--delicious tacos? Check. (the fish and the pastor are my top picks!) Yummy cheese dip that you add chorizo and pickled jalapenos to? Check. (Go on, just order it. You can run it off around the block later.) Delish guac? Check. (Much easier than making it yourself.) Cool waitresses with personalities?!?! Check. Generous selection from which you may choose to imbibe? Check. Hmmm. Why am I not there right now?

This place has out of this world margaritas. I recommend getting a pitcher and enjoying some day-drinking. We had the pastor and short rib tacos. They were bomb. Also their guac and chips taste homemade and super fresh. Loved this place, great ambience and awesome food!

HOLY GUACAMOLE! Best guac in Indy! Tons of fresh lime, and a nice rustic consistencey! Bakersfield Margartias are perfect! Fresh squeezed and loaded with tequila. None of that premixed, high-fructose laden crap behind that bar! And who can beat $2 boots of PBR, and rotating daily $3 shots? Awesome music, consistent with the "Bakersfield sound" that this place was built in homage to. The downstairs area is really cool. too, with amazing lighting, and communal seating. A much anticipated and needed addition to Mass Ave! Me Gusta!

How can you not like a place that plays Clint Eastwood on the flat screens? I've been to Bakersfield a few times and have now ordered food to go as well. Each of my experiences has been really good. All of the servers I've had have been extremely nice and quick to bring out our orders. My girlfriend described the styling as urban tex-mex, which makes a good fit for Mass Ave., as there isn't really anything like it. The food is nothing short of excellent. I've had virtually all of the tacos, with my favorite being the cochinita pibil and the short rib. I usually eat faster than I should, but I slow down for these bad boys - I savor every bite. Although, I wouldn't be upset if they were a little bit bigger. I would say 3 tacos would be an ideal portion for dinner if you don't get an appetizer. There is also a green and red sauce that comes complimentary, along with tortilla chips. The red is a bit spicy, but I'd have no trouble consuming half of a bottle of that stuff in one sitting. It's a bit warm, so if you don't like hotter sauces, the green sauce is a bit milder. When we ordered to go, we asked for some of the 2 complimentary sauces to go and they packed us a nice portion in to go sized cups. I was in heaven. They also gave a very generous sized bag of tortilla chips with the quac. I really appreciate when restaurants don't short change me and Bakersfield did not fail to impress me in this regard. They have a really pretty good beer selection, including Indiana Craft brews. My girlfriend ordered a margarita and it was definitely not weak - needless to say she got her money's worth. I will say that the music is too loud. It can be difficult to talk with people who are close by, so it would be my suggestion to turn it down a bit. Each time we've gone it's been really busy, so I'm hoping they open up for lunch, so that I can go at a less congested time. Since I live down the street, I plan on eating here regularly.

Holy guacamole Batman! Best guac I've had at a restaurant in Indy. Chunky, limey goodness. Me gusta. I rather like the streamlined menu approach. A handful of appetizers (did I mention the guac?), two salads, two tortas and a slew of tacos. Tried three of the tacos: fish, chicken (pollo verde) and spicy pork (cochinita pibil). The fish had plenty of flavor and balance. The spicy pork was advertised as much hotter than it was, but still perfect for me and plenty of zest. The pollo verde was a touch dry and needed some red sauce to bring out the fullness. We did not see the craft cocktail menu so went with the house margarita which was not too syrupy sweet with a solid tequila strength and a good tart snap. Really like the casual western ambiance with an undercurrent of rowdiness. I can imagine a segmented audience of traditional diners and late night revelers both being equally comfortable here. Service was extremely attentive. Not cheap but not outrageous. Our tacos were served collectively which led to sharing bites. Nothing discouraged me from a return visit and I eagerly anticipate another round of guac as well as trying more of the tacos.

Great spot off mass ave, always packed and feels a bit like spots back home in Texas. The food is good...tacos, queso and guac is delish and they have margarita pitchers as well. Fun patio spot, great for groups and the patio alley is now open! Definitely a must if you are in Indy. Only down side, 1 ladies bathroom for the entire restaurant means long lines when it is packed...and limited seating when it is busy as well.

Get here. as soon as you can. The food is really tasty! Simple, quality, and reasonably priced. Our server told us everything's made in house and it definitely comes through in the food and especially in the tortillas. Solid service - I love when you're waiting for a table and a server offers you a cocktail. It's a small detail but it's nice not to have to holler at the bartender and have a tasty margarita while you wait. Also - they know what they're doin with the margaritas. I asked for mine without the Cointreau because I expected a run-of-the-mill saccharin sweet margarita and their margaritas are *perfect* the way they serve 'em. Don't skip the Cointreau!

The guacamole is as good as i have ever had (well, besides my own) - Queso, same thing Salsas (green & red) are excellent - a well balanced tomatillo and a smokey chipotle Limited number of menu selections probably helps insure the highest quality Combine excellent food, attentive service + a large dose of Johnny Cash & old school C&W and this is a favorite!

This place is always packed, gets really hot in the summer, and smells like a moldy basement. BUT the margaritas are sooo good (and STRONG), the tacos are delicious and the servers all have fun personalities. They have two vegetarian taco varieties, which is a plus in my book. Everytime I come here I have a great time.

Excellent selection of beers on tap and tasty tacos. They put a little too much short rib in the beef tacos. Could hold back on the meat and I think the taco would be a little more balanced. My favorite was the spicy pepper taco (with habenero sauce). Servers were a little too nonchalant but they got my orders right and brought my food out quickly. Ordered a bourbon manhattan and enjoyed my fruity cocktail. Would come back and bring friends.

They told me it was a 20 min wait and the next group was told 10 min. While I was standing there waiting to be sat they were calling other people who had been on the list. Well we left our number and never got a call.. It seemed like they were kind of full and couldn't handle the lunch rush. Also, a waitress or food runner was grumpy and kept yelling at people people as she was coming out of the kitchen. A very wanna be yuppy vibe to the place. Will never attempt to be sat there again!!

Hey!! What a great place! The old pizza joint with a floorplan that never really made sense, was packed when we walked in just after 7 on a Thursday night. Completely rebuilt on the inside you'd never know you used to order great pie there. The hostess said that it would be 30 minutes for a table. She took my cell number and suggested we avoid the crowd by heading downstairs to a second bar. The downstairs was just as crowded as the main level but we luckily found a bar table to call home. The waitress was there in just a few minutes and brought us the Tequila and Bourbon menu as well as the Dinner menu. She suggested that we could eat there if we wanted to. Which we did. 3 Mole, 2 Fish and 1 Pastor (pork something) Tacos later along with 4 shots of tequila and a few beers and we were good to go. OH!! and of course the Chips and Guac. The tacos actually arrived before the chips so Trevor the GM stopped by to apologize and comped the appetizer for us. We didn't ask and quite honestly is wasn't a big deal at all. But great service we thought! The Mole tacos were our favorite I think, but all were very good. Small, but really good! At the end of the meal, we decided that although they were small they were really portioned correctly. Big portions really just leave you feeling uncomfortable. These were perfect.....and at $3 or $4 bucks you can always go for round two. We liked Bakersfield a lot! We'll be back for sure.....and look forward to it!! Welcome to Indy!

Bakersfield Mass Ave is one of the biggest hot spots in Mass Ave right now. This place is pretty much elbow to elbow every single weekend. And with a Clint Eastwood movie always playing on one of the TVs, it can't be all bad ... right? The food at Bakersfield is decent. If you order chips you should probably go with the guacamole as it offers huge chunks of avocado and is usually preferred over the salsa, which in my opinion is pretty boring. The tacos here are pretty tasty but extremely small. Definitely not very much bang for your buck, for sure. The beer selection is pretty standard here. They have a solid amount of local, domestic, craft, and local brews available on tap or in bottles. The liquor selection is exactly what you'd expect at an Indianapolis hot spot. So if you're here for shots, you're not going to be disappointed. The waitstaff is really the best part about Bakersfield. I have no idea how the staff keeps up with such a huge crowd night in and now out, but they totally do. The bar service is polite and fast as well. Overall a really good staff. If you don't like busy, extremely loud bars, this isn't the place for you. If you're looking to meet people, be where the crowd is, or just be seen ... you're in the right place. I could live with or without this place.

This is a fantastic bar/restaurant. My order was prepared quickly, served hot, and was very delicious. The beer selection was excellent and was available in draft and bottle. I really appreciated the excellent selection of local beers. I ordered the pollo rojo and an order of chips and queso. They were out of the beer I ordered and thus did not have enough to fill my glass all the way. They comped me the beer which was very kind of them as it was full enough that I would have paid full price for it. There was a western playing on the TV screen and my favorite sort of country music on the sound system. This is the sort of place that I would only imagine in some fevered dream.

Delicious food and fun atmosphere! If you ever go to Mass Ave, you have to check it out! The only downside is that the wait on Friday and Saturday nights is usually 1.5 - 2+ hours, so I like going during off hours! (weekdays, Sundays, lunches, etc).

A nice addition to the southern end of Mass Ave and it's about time the old Bazbeaux location was put to use. I sat at the bar in the basement because the place was *packed* last night and it was the only place to find a seat. Music - agree with other reviewers, too loud and sort of a random selection. Turn it down a notch. Less is more. Food - I had the fish, short rib and huitlacochie tacos. The fish was my favorite. As others have stated, the tacos could use a little more spice / flavoring, but overall they are good. Also had the guacamole, it was very fresh, very tasty. Has a slight kick to it that I enjoyed. The chips were a little on the salty side, but didn't detract from my enjoyment of the guacamole. Had a couple of Corona's in a can. Made me feel like I was at the beach or in Mexico to have them in a can. The bar downstairs does not have a full bar selection, but since I was only drinking beer, no big deal. Service from the bartender was great and I will be back soon.

One of my favorite after work places in Indy! The pitchers of margaritas are delicious and are perfect for sharing among a table for 2 or 3. We always get the chips and salsa (a smokey red salsa and a lime cilantro tasting green salsa). Try out the pastor taco-- marinated spicy pork, pineapple pieces and cilantro (I take off the pickled onions). The tacos can be a small snack or get a couple for dinner. I have tried almost all of them and you can't really go wrong!

After our failed attempt at Plat 99, we headed to Mass Ave. Wow, were we surprised , not only by the great food, tacos a little pricey. But the service rocked, Patrick did everything right, Sat us , with menus, water and told us about the menu. I was really impressed and so were my guests. So thank you Bakersfield and Patrick, you saved our evening by providing excellent customer service. And the guacamole was delicious....and fresh!

It may be crowded but the margaritas are tasty and tacos are tastier! Oh and the torta's! It goes on! I love splitting the queso with chorizo. Then getting a hodge podge of taco types. Even the vegetarian ones are flavorful and exquisite. Now this isn't your cheesey tamale place taco, which I love too for different reasons. This is really more or a meat paired with a specific topping combo that delights your mouth in a sophisticated way. It is a little spendy, and I think being that its on mass ave it could use a little better tap beer list so guys that don't like tequila are more enticed to join. But once you have the braised beef torta you won't have a problem with getting back into this place! It reminds me of the high end west coast tacos. I only wish they would do some seasonal specials!

Mmmm delicious!! When visiting friends, this is one of the places that we decided to go to. We started with a pitcher of margarita - which was delicious and it was an authentic margarita, not a pre-made batch. Then, we headed on to dinner. (We only had about a 30 minute wait on a busy night with four of us) The tacos were delicious! All of us ordered different kinds so we could sample and there really wasn't one that I didn't like. The fish tacos were my absolute favorite though - but I am always a sucker for those. Also, the guacamole and the queso are delicious! Our server was a little slow (which again was on a busy night but...a little too slow still) - but other than that, everything else was great! It is a small joint and I DO recommend getting seated upstairs. Downstairs is very small and it is hard to hear anything by the way it echoes and the music plays.

simply DELICIOUS!!! Chips & Guac, chips & queso....& those tacos!! We tried the mole, pollo verde, and the rajas. They were all fantastic. And the salsas they give you at the table are delicious. The margaritas are the best part!!!!!! SO good, fresh squeezed, & served in a mason jar. I can't wait to go back.

From the get go, the hostess got us off on the wrong foot. She redirected us from sitting in the nearly empty right side of the restaurant to a table on the left. Once we were seated, she once again told us that we had to move to another table. Seating issues aside, the tacos were only okay. They certainly were fancy, but I've had much better. The beer selection was good, although the server needed to brush up on what was available on tap. The Agave Wheat was my favorite. All in all, its a nice looking place with a menu full of fancy ingredients and a good beer menu, but that describes most places nowadays on Mass Ave, right?

I like the atmosphere, it's always packed. They serve the best guacamole I've ever had. BUT I wouldn't advise trying to get a drink downstairs at the bar, it's tight and I haven't had good service thus far.

I find myself sooo wanting to dislike this place, but I wholeheartedly CANNOT! I've been here twice and I am taking 4 newbies this week. Tacos, salsa, queso, guac, tortas, margaritas, PBR....what more does one ask for? Yes, I could go without the 2 hour wait on the weekends......this place already needs a bigger venue. However, I don't mind visiting another local pub until I get my phone call that our table is ready. Makes the night more interesting. Newbies- there is seating and a bar downstairs. Patronize that bar area and help that bartender out. Plus- it's much cooler down there during the warm evenings. Overall- I just have nothing bad to say about this place and it does live up to its hype. Another fantastic Mass Ave addition!

I finally made it to Bakersfield, which seems to have had come up in every conversation I have gotten into with people about Mass Ave for the past 6 weeks only to repeatedly have to claim that I have yet to make the trip here. I didn't go out with the intention to visit this bar in particular, but upon arriving in Mass Ave, there was only one bar that had a sea of people out front with music playing and what looked like good times to be had. After a few drinks at the original destination we had chosen to meet, it was time to check out what all the commotion was about across the street. It may have just been the available standing room only patio out front, or the openness of the establishment with its large windows facing Mass Ave, but this definitely seemed like the place to be. There was a wait for a table, but we weren't looking to sit down anyway and just made our way inside. After a quick stroll around to take in the entire place, I was amazed at the amount of space they had including lots of tables, a large 3 sided bar stocked with more tequila than I care to ever consider drinking, and a downstairs area that was a little darker and louder with even more seating and an additional bar. The wait at the upstairs bar was a little long because it was so busy, but the margaritas had been recommended and that is what was ordered. I'm not one to usually order sweet drinks, but I thought they were really good. They also had a large selection of beer including quite a few drafts and were served in glass cowboy boots. The theme is definitely southwest, but isn't what I would call a country western bar. There was a good mix of people, and the noise level wasn't too much to talk over but was louder than a lot of the surrounding places. I am not a Mass Ave scene expert, but it did seem like this place filled a niche that other places down there didn't quite offer yet. More of a fun place with a big crowd of young professionals that offered cheap drinks but still felt classier than what you would find in Broad Ripple. There was a lot of standing room outside on their fenced in patio, and the turnover at the tables inside seemed quick enough that if you put your name on the list, they would have seated you without too much of a wait. I didn't have the opportunity to try any of the food, but from what I saw it all looked delicious and will be on my to-do list for the next trip down that way.

Crest small plate foods. Fun place and try the Manhatten. They age the cherries the tee so good. Be careful they sneak up on you.

This was our first stop after getting off a trans-atlantic flight from London, and the friendly staff, great craft beers, good food, and buzzing atmosphere were very welcome after months of cold, dreary pubs. We had the short rib torta, which we would highly recommend, and a selection of tacos. The short rib was melt in your mouth delicious while the tacos were above average. If we lived in Indy, we would be here all the time.

I went here for Cinco de Mayo with a group of friends, and also on a date. On the date, we sat in the basement area, which had a cool jail theme. For Cinco de Mayo, they had what promised to be a cool outdoor event set up that was sadly not as hopping as it could have been due to the nasty weather. It was a good experience not only for two, but for a large group as well. Bakersfield has probably the best guacamole I've had in Indy, and I'm picky about my guac. Big chunks of avocado, and lots of cilantro and lime. It's delicious. The margaritas are also great, and I love that you can get a pitcher of margarita that's not so sugary sweet that you can tell it was made from a mix. They are the real deal! The tacos were good, but you can get better tacos for cheaper at a bunch of taquerias around the city. They are however comparable to those at La Chinita Poblano in Broad Ripple. Regardless, I'd keep coming back just for the margaritas and guac. It's also a fun atmosphere.

I've been here many times... and every time, I get reminded about why this place has stolen my heart. The atmosphere is ideal, the staff is attentive, and most importantly, the food is incredible. Their margaritas are some of the best I've ever had made for me, and their tacos are amazing. My.absolute favorite part of visiting, is the chips and guacamole. It's my favorite mole. And it's a necessity. If you like tacos, booze, or nachos, do yourself a favor and visit. Seriously. You can thank me later. Additionally, this place is super busy, and the constant flow of people just adds to the awesomeness this place offers. Have a taco, make a new friend, and make sure you have a Margarita to was down the experience.

Gotta give it 5 stars. Not a thing to complain about. Great bar staff, very attentive and on top of everything. Tacos were simple and excellent.

This rating is solely on a service experience. I have been going to bakersfield since they opened last spring and have had nothing but great experiences. I love the food, service, and margaritas! Up until this last weekend I haven't had any issues with a server. I didn't recognize her from being in there in my many past visits and she was extremely rude! I want to say her name was Amber, but I'm not 100% on that. When I was finally even able to get her attention she acted very annoyed that she had to wait on me. This is her job, so I didn't understand that. She never returned to check on us and waited forever just to get our check so we could leave, even though we would've enjoyed to stay longer and for more. We were so irritated with the experience we wanted to go somewhere else. This was just a very strange evening with service at bakersfield.

Had to try the newest thing on Mass Ave! The guac and Bakersfield Margarita are definitely a hit! And if you're in to PBR, you can't go wrong with the $2 boot (the hubby quite enjoyed this). Did I mention the guac yet? If not, it is great! It is tangy, chunky, goodness!! The food menu is pretty straightforward, just a few apps, 2 salads, 2 sandwiches (tortas) and then the tacos. The tacos are served individually on 4-inch tortillas that are made in-house. I definitely recommend the mole, as I enjoyed this one very much. I also tried the huitlacoche taco. Not my favorite. There was nothing really wrong/bad with it, but it just wasn't impressive. I didn't see the point in continuing to eat it. Our dining companion had the mole and short rib tacos, both of which he greatly enjoyed. Hubby got the Milanesa sandwich which was very yummy and too big to finish. Overall, I think this place will do very well. They serve their full menu until closing time which will appeal to the late night people, the atmosphere is fun with the barrel tables, Johnny Cash music, and such, and the extensive tequila and whiskey menu. I think that they could use slightly more comfortable seating and the music might be slightly loud for dinner time, but other than that I am a fan and will definitely be back.

Very recent addition to the Mass ave restaurant and pub buzz, Bakersfield delivers. They go as a taqueria and tequila bar which also serves a variety of whiskeys. I really do like their tacos and get them each time i am in the neighborhood. My wife being a vegetarian usually does not have many options but here they have made great veggie tacos. they have flavor and uniqueness. The sangria and the margarita are very tasty too. The way the place is set up and the rustic set up is one of a kind too. My complaints with this place are for sure the price of the tacos as for 4 bucks i think they are tiny and the drinks other than the beer can be expensive. Also, those going to try it for the first time, please be prepared to wait as the lines get long and wait times exceed 30 mins on weekends. Although i will be here for my wife, i would prefer a taqueria and a pub with slightly more bang for buck.

Reasonably priced and fantastic quality food and friendly, speedy service. All the tacos are amazing, but if you want a really good surprise, try the Milanese! Can't say enough

I so wanted to like this place. Positives: good marguerites, friendly wait staff, good cheese queso; No so positive are the tacos - overpriced and not delicious. Oh well.

The food was good. The margaritas were great. The bartenders were great. The guy next to me at the bar was spitting tobacco into a paper cup. When I brought this to the attention of the manager on duty her solution was to move me to a table instead of talking to the fellow. I won't be back until the management grows some huevos.

My husband and I wandered in for lunch during a weekend trip to Indianapolis for a Rams/Colts game. We ordered six tacos, a margarita and a local beer (per recommendation from our server after we asked about whether any of their beers were from local breweries). The tacos were awesome and we were both plenty full with 3 each (we probably could have gotten by just fine with two). Aside from the great food, our server was super helpful and actually wrote down a couple of attractions for us to check out (we didn't even ask) after we mentioned we were in town for the game. She also told us about a couple breweries, a winery, and restaurant nearby we might be interested in later that day. Great food and friendly service.. We'd definitely go back!

I've been here a few times for tacos, both for dinner and lunch, and I really like the atmosphere--very hip tho a little cramped. I just don't think the food is that great-had almost every kind of taco. Tho the guac is pretty great. House margaritas are pretty good too. I've passed by during busy nights and it gets really packed--I'd suggest going for lunch.

Came in late on a Saturday night with a group of friends. The place was packed and loud. First we took a peak downstairs but all the tables had chairs on them and the bar was closed, which I though was odd considering how busy the place was. The Sangria I had was overly sweet for my taste. And from what I saw on the menu the only cocktails had tequila and whiskey, which are the two liquors I dislike. Adding a couple of vodka or rum based cocktails would be nice and cater to more people. The guacamole was good but $4 for one taco, I'll pass. Also there was only one toilet in the ladies room, which is a huge pet peeve of mine. You are serving lots of alcohol and you have one small restroom with one stall. I did like the decor and our waitress was friendly and our food and drinks did come quickly. I would come back if everyone in my party wanted to but I wasn't a big fan.

My wife and I loved this place. Music was great selection but quiet enough for a casual lunch convo. Decor was very cool, simple but trendy. The service was quick and top notch and the food was excellent! Tacos and sandwiches are amazing, great beer selection too. Seating isn't great, but not a big enough deal to mark it down.

Lots of great reviews that mostly hit the nail on the head. GIve them a read. I'll summarize: * GREAT chips & guac (it really is great guac) * GREAT margaritas ($6 isn't bad; haven't brought myself to splurge for the $12 premium ones) * Tacos are pretty tasty -- some more than others, but give them a try * Don't try to hit the place around lunch or dinner (really busy). Oh, and Johnny Cash 'comes around' on the background music lots...which is pretty awesome.

I've been looking forward to Bakersfield opening, and it did not disappoint. I discovered my favorite bartender now works here, which is always a good start. I had just a short time for dinner, and my chips and salsa and beer were in front I me in no time. Then came the tacos. Wow! Full of complex flavors, seasonings and spiciness. A reasonable amount of delicious food at a reasonable price.

Good food, good drinks, mostly good service. I'm not going to get hung up on whether this is "true" Mexican (it isn't, but neither is virtually anything else we accept as being so) or what type of Mexican it is. If you need a breakdown of what region their spice profile is from, I'm not your guy. All you need to know is it's delicious. App standouts include the Guac and Queso, although you could be happy just eating those warm salted chips. I've had most of the tacos and while all are pretty darn good, I find myself ordering more of the Pastor, Cochinita Pibil, and Short Rib than any others. For those who haven't been, you'll probably want to order two or three tacos, depending on size and hunger. While the food is excellent, the drinks alone are worth a trip. Margs are in my Top 3 of the city. The only thing holding them back is sometimes they run a little sweet for my taste. Even with this minor issue, they always include an appropriately strong amount of booze and having a pitcher option is great for groups. The beer list is an interesting assortment of domestics, micros, and south of the borders. While I haven't had any of their craft cocktails, the people I've dined with who did rave about them. As for the service, it's usually pretty good, but has been noticeably lackluster on some trips. It's a small seating area (check the bar downstairs as it's sometimes completely empty) and therefore you'll need to be prepared to wait, even on weeknights. This place is still new, fresh, and really the only thing close to Mexican in that area. While I've never minded waiting for good food, their estimates for wait times are often really poor. I'm not talking 5 extra minutes here, more like 30. Also, they really pack too many people on those barrel tables upstairs and community tables in the basement. When you don't have room for everyone's food and drink on a table, there are too many people sitting there. Also, don't expect to carry on an intimate conversation; it's REALLY loud, especially downstairs where one could get claustrophobic on a busy weekend night. Finally, they may also still have a few bad apples on the service staff. Several requests on food have been forgotten and once an order of a beer with two limes resulted in two beers, no limes. These aren't things that should keep you from going, (DEFINITELY go) or me from returning, but they will keep Bakersfield from getting 5 stars, for now.

I can't say enough good things about this place. Food is tasty and staff is friendly. My favorites are the fish taco and el pastor taco. Don't miss the house marg. It's a busy place but you can usually find a spot at one of the bars to wait for your table. The downstairs area would be great for small group events.

As the GREAT Dwight Yoakam said about Bakersfield, I came here looking for something I couldn't find anywhere else. Well, I have seen all of this before...but that doesn't mean it is all bad. This place reminds me a lot of similar joints I have been to in Texas, and I think they might be trying a bit too hard with the Waylon music on the speakers and the spaghetti westerns on the TVs. With that said, Bakersfield is a pretty cool place with pretty good food. The tacos and guacamole are spot on (though a tad overpriced) and the tequila and beer selection and specials are right where they should be. Overall, this is a great addition to Mass Ave and unique to the area.

Finally tried the food! We had the fish and el pastor tacos - while I have no criticism of the food itself, the tacos are slightly expensive given their small size (tortillas are only 3-4" in diameter). When I lived in Chicago, I could get the same thing but 40% larger, for the same price! So the cost kind of ruined it for me. However, I will definitely get the torta again - not only will you be full and save money, but the braised short ribs, ooey gooey caramelized onions, and argula were pure perfection. And on a totally unrelated, random note, I sat at a barrel table for the first time. As a girl wearing a dress, I had to awkwardly place both legs facing the wall and then pivot my hips so I could still face the table. The look of the barrels are aesthetically pleasing and goes well with the restaurant decor, but they make sitting down a problem-solving exercise!

Wow my taco standard has just been blown through the roof. These are amazing! I had the fish, short rib, and pollo verde. They all were good, fish was by far the best. The guac is legit and the green salsa is pretty good too! No complaints about the food whatsoever. I will definitely be back to try some of the other tacos and probably another PBR! I'm not a big fan of the seating. It gets really crowded at times so you'll have to share a table with strangers. If you have a large group make reservations.

Indy seems to be having a love affair with this new upscale taco joint. Arrive early/plan on waiting. It is worth it. Best $6.50 margarita I have had. I like that the menu is simple and easy. 6 or so taco options, tortas, a few salads and some apps. It really is a tequila and whiskey drinkers heaven. Great options for beer as well. The guacamole was good but pretty salty. It was missing tomato, just a personal preference, I will order it again. I love the remodel and use of the space, the service has been really good both times I have visited. I look forward to becoming a regular this summer!

Holy guacamole!! I love this place because I have a crazy love for tacos or anything Mexican food related. Their guacamole is out of this world. Made fresh throughout the day. The menu is perfect and small for the indecisive type. They have a really impressive cocktail menu as well. There's upstairs and downstairs seating area. If you had to choose I would pick to seat upstairs all the time because the music is way too loud downstairs. Everyone seems nice and friendly. Never had a bad experience here!

Pros: delicious authentic tacos, guacamole, pitchers of margaritas, as well as a great outdoor space. Cons: always extremely busy (even at odd times), high-top tables are a bit awkward to sit at, and the place is not quite big enough. I've eaten at Bakersfield half a dozen times, and I'm never disappointed with the food. I also love that they play dubbed movies on their TVs from DVDs that (in my head) were purchased at a cheap gas station. However, I like to have a little space when I'm dining or grabbing a drink, and there's just not much relaxing going on in the tight space of this restaurant. Luckily they're expanding soon, because I have a hankerin' for some Johnny Cash music and tacos.

I realize that there's a lot of deliciousness on this menu, but I have a go-to order that's pretty much perfection. And you don't mess with perfection. Chips & guac to start. Short rib torta for the main event. The guac has just the right ratio of ingredients to leave the avocado super creamy, the onion not punching you in the mouth, and just enough bite. The short rib torta...yum...I eat red meat about 3 times a year and I 0% regret that this is one of them. You don't even need the little salsa cup that it comes with. The only downsides: super loud and pretty much always crowded except for weekday lunchtimes.

After all the hype, we had to give Bakersfield a try. We were not disappointed. All of the tacos that we tried were great and the spicy margarita was fantastic! This place gets busy and does not take reservations so I'd suggest not coming at peak hours or being prepared to wait for a table.

I give this place four stars because of the price. It's pretty expensive for what you're getting. The food taste amazing, but it is expensive, even if it's gourmet tacos. We did love the food though! We went here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. I definitely recommend the queso and guacamole. The guac was fresh and a great blend of flavors. The queso was a bit different than normal cheap queso, but was packed with rich delectable cheese. I would recommend the fish tacos (if you enjoy fish tacos). We also had the short rib ( the marinade on this was amazing!) the pastor (this also had a wonderful marinade that paired well with the pineapple), I think the final one was the cochinita pibil (we didn't love this one, it was a bit salty, but not bad). We were stuffed by the time we finished our meal. The service was nothing to mention, and the atmosphere is bar-like, but not very rowdy during the day. I love the food! But the price deters me from a frequent visit.

We came here after work mid-week; if you'd like to avoid the crowds everyone is talking about try coming around 5PM on a Tuesday night! We started with the guacamole, and it was definitely fresh made. The chunks of avocado were huge and delicious, maybe even a bit too big since we found ourselves trying to "cut" some of the chunks with chips since the pieces were bigger than bite-sized. The chips were fresh and tasty! Four of us shared a pitcher of margaritas which worked out to one glass each; so...this means the price of a pitcher (which serves 4) is the same as 4 individual margaritas. Next time we'll probably just each order our own glass and not have to deal with the pitcher (e.g. needing to fish ice cubes out into the glasses with a spoon, or else risk the dreaded ice-valanche if we tried to "pour" the ice cubes into the glasses). They were good though and plenty strong, so we were all glad we stuck to one glass each! The tacos were great! I had a fish taco and a short rib taco; both were really good! The fish taco was done perfectly; the fish was moist and the coating wasn't too thick and not at all greasy. The short rib was tender, rich and delicious! The portions of meat and fish on the tacos were good for the price in my opinion. The guacamole, chips and two tacos worked well for a light dinner. The atmosphere is fun! Where else can you hear Johnny Cash music playing non-stop! I've not been here when it is packed, but when we were there with a decent number of other tables filled and the music playing, it was not hard to have a conversation.

  • Sam K.

I am definitely a fan, and so is everyone. Their margaritas are some of the best I've had in Indy. If you're feeling adventurous, try making it spicy! The pitcher is definitely the way to go if you have a party of more than 2. The guacamole and queso are both great options to have with chips. Although they do have many other food options (the portions are somewhat small on the other dishes), I like to have dinner elsewhere and then come to Bakersfield for Margaritas and then chips and guacamole to share. "Why only four stars?" you ask. Because everyone knows how great Bakersfield is and therefore everyone and his brother is there all the time. If it's Friday evening at 7:30 and you think you're going to get a table for 6 anytime soon, you may want to consider a plan B, or setting up camp outside. You are permitted to go in to the bar area inside to order drinks without getting a table, but its typically extremely crowded and accompanied by traffic from the servers and drunk girls making their way to the bathroom in groups. They have an additional bar in the basement with standing tables and outside tables when the weather is cooperative. If you do have the fortune to have a table, it is quite the enjoyable experience. I love you, Bakersfield, but unfortunately you're kind of a player.

Is it just me or is this place just a tad bit overrated? I've been here several times and can't believe I haven't written a review yet. I enjoy the food, especially the tacos. Don't forget the guacamole, queso w/ chorizo, and the salsas! I'd definitely recommend coming on weeknight, so it's not so packed. My friends swear by the margaritas, both regular and spicy. However, I'm just not a fan. These margaritas are tart! Not a bad thing, just a preference. At least they use large ice cubes, which I give them props for. However, I usually just go with a beer or sangria instead.

Me and Bakersfield are friends. Yes you might even say great friends. See I bookmarked Bakersfield months ago but just tried it about 2 weeks ago after hanging out with the BFF. Now first let me say we weren't starving but decided that we should get something to eat because we both hadn't eaten in hours. I got two fish tacos and my best friend got one chicken taco. Yes only one. Our poor waiter was like are you guys sure that's all you want. We explained to him that we weren't very hungry and off he went. Wow what a mistake we made. We devoured our tacos and of course instantly wanted about a million. We were in love. We of course have been back 3 times in two weeks. The spicy margarita is fast becoming one of my favorite drinks. We have enjoyed our tacos and drinks every time. I will be back soon with pictures next time.

Love this place, everything about it is fantastic. Crowded and busy for a reason. Their back room was a well-kept secret that I somehow knew nothing about for 6 months. Seriously everything I've ever eaten here has been great. For me highlights are the queso, guacamole, short rib torta, taco al pastor and fish taco! Still need to try the milanesa torta, supposed to be tasty! Also I do a lot of take out from here, cause the food is so darn good and I can then avoid the crowds and/or wait. They are super quick and accomodating too. If you don't order alcohol here, the place is actually quite reasonable.

Great place to grab a beer, enjoy laughs and socialization with friends. This place is extremely open and the servers are fun and easygoing. The atmosphere is always relaxing and entertaining. If you can, try sitting against the open windows. It makes for fun people-watching along the crazy street of Mass Ave. Outdoor seating is available and is actually not frequented as much I was anticipating.

This place is amazing... And I always am craving some Bakersfield tacos and margaritas! The decor and overall feel of the place is awesome. The tacos are amazing and I clever forget to order guac and queso when I go. The only issue here is the space! Always a wait and always cramped. Weekdays are good days to go. I wouldn't try it on a weekend though!

I'm a student, and this place is a liiiiitle more expensive than I prefer, but OK for an occasional outing. Cocktails are GREAT. It's almost always crowded, but like another reviewer noted, it's because it's delicious. If you don't like the crowds maybe ask specifically if you can be seated in the back (or outside) as the front tables are small, but the stand-up tables at the sidewalk and the tables inside by the windows afford great people watching. I had the fish tacos both times I went and was happy with the choice. Also tasted short rib torta and it was splendid. Great atmosphere.

Sorry folks, no photos this time. Everything that came out of the kitchen looked and smelled so good that I had to eat it right away. I came with a friend. We both ordered margaritas, which they only serve on the rocks (not frozen), and they were very wonderfully strong. The chips and guacamole were great, the chips were warm and salty, and the guac was fresh. We eat had two tacos. Looking at them I was sure I would get heartburn from the spices and pickled onions, but magically i didn't. The tacos were two bites each, but two bites of heaven. The meat was so flavorful and juicy. I hope to make it back here again before I go home to NYC!

Any place that lets me enjoy my PBR out of a glass boot is okay in my book. It seems like these faux street fare places are the only places PBR is acceptable, and that's alright with me. They also serve up a nice marg. I've been here a few times, and each experience has been pleasant. Usually it's pretty crowded (good sign, no?) and I opt for a spot at the bar instead of waiting for a table. The bartenders are busy, and not the most social because of this but it's understandable. They mix up drinks like pros, and it's fun to watch them work. Just order the guac, okay? I had Bakersfield and Adobo guacamole on back to back nights (it was Cinco, leave me alone people) and Bakersfield was the surprising but very clear winner. The app plus two tacos a piece made for a filling meal when washed down with a few bootfulls of beer.

Awesome food, and amazing customer service. We get take out from here often, and once there was a huge mistake. The restaurant manager could not have been more professional, gracious, and even followed up... and this was on a busy night. This made me love the place even more... as if the food wasn't reason enough. Surprisingly, their salads are awesome too! Eating in, it's not that great for kids but not impossible either. Just face them away from the old westerns playing on the wall since sometimes they can be violent.

Oh yeah! What a great way to get introduced to Indianapolis! Being from California, we tend to get picky when it comes to Mexican food, but these corn tortilla tacos were on point! I went with the pork belly and portobello mushroom one. Those were easily devoured. Don't you dare leave without grabbing a house made margarita, served in hipster mason jars. I see you Bakersfield!

Small little place on Mass ave. Taco portions aren't too big but the quality of tacos is phenomenal. The pork and chicken tacos were great. They also have really good, chunky guacamole and some delicious queso dip that comes out fire hot! Unfortunately the place is extremely busy during typical dining hours and sometimes the staff doesn't make you feel welcomed then.

The drinks: Hands down, the best place to get Margaritas in the town. just order a pitcher and you will not be disappointed. The Food: Fish tacos all the way, fresh fried fish inside yummy tacos and other veggie fillings will leave you speechless ! The place: Busy...super busy for a friday night, so plan ahead and find a nook table or bench in the backyard. cannot vouch for inside noise as it was loud on outside too. Overall the best place in downtown, INdy.

We checked this place out for lunch this past weekend and will definitely be back. Their tacos and chips & guac are awesome. I recommend their pork belly taco. I only wish they used two tortillas so they don't fall apart as much. The place is always packed so try to get there at an odd hour. The back patio is pretty cool, check it out.

MARGS!!! Oh em gee the margaritas here are the bees knees. I'm glad I was sitting at the bar to make the bartender make them because by the taste alone (delicious) they do not taste strong. However, I watched her pour the glass HALF full with tequila. Wowzers! $7 for the house but well worth it. I'll probably go straight for the pitcher next time. The place was packed at 6Pm when we arrived, we got the last two seats at the bar and the tables were full. Excellent vibe and decor in this place but it does get a little cozy. We started with the queso dip which was excellent. Added the pickled jalapenos as well but I didn't think they were that spicy. Chips were hot, fresh, and crispy. On to the tacos! We had four total: the fish, chicken, short rib, and pulled pork. They were all good. However, the fish taco was out of this world. I doubt I'll ever be getting any other taco there. Yum! Abodo Grill had what I thought were the greatest fish tacos of all time but these may take the cake. I'd need to do a side by side taste test ;)

Bakersfield is a great scene. The queso is amazing. A must try for sure! It gets packed, so try to go early if you are going for dinner on the weekend or even just for drinks. I like the short rib taco as well as the mole taco. Bakersfield is always a good time!

Went to Bakersfield for a cocktail or two with my girlfriends. We had queso and guac and they were superb, but the margaritas were weak. It tasted like we're were just drinking the mix or at best, limeade. When the check came I left a $20 for my $14 bill and the waiter walked away with my change rather than bringing it back even though he had to settle up credit cards. I won't go back. Shitty atmosphere and shitty service.

Bakersfield on Mass Ave in Indy is a must. We drove from Washington DC for lunch because we heard the tacos were worth the drive!! We were not disappointed as Bakersfield was better than advertised! Started w guac which was excellent guac. Very fresh and great flavor. We also ordered a queso and a queso w chorizo....both were incredible. It was so good we forgot to take a picture but seriously, DO NOT leave without eating some queso. Fish taco w mahi was about perfect. The fish was done just right and the slaw was just the right amount and flavor. Also had the pollo, short rib and pork tacos. All were amazing. The seasoning in the meat was outstanding. Friends had a torta w chicken that was off the charts! Lo (Lauren) our server was great and the manager made our day! We will be stopping here on all future trips from DC!!

The first time I went here, it was as part of a bar crawl, and I was already kind of tipsy. I do remember that it was packed and loud (Friday night, what do you expect?) and drinking their agave wheat beer, which I really liked. I returned here for a dinner/meeting. I had planned on working out afterwards (haha, that ended up *not* happening), so I went with water as opposed to their sangria, which is what most of our party ordered. They come in Mason jars. Cute. I ordered chips and guac for our side of the table, and their guacamole is among the best I think I've ever had in my life. It's gotta be chunky-- not pureed! For my meal, I had the chicken chorizo tostada which was super duper yummy. To top it all off, they give you a postcard with a celebrity's photo and a drink recipe on the back along with your check. Mine had Hunter S. Thompson. I've been considering moving closer to downtown once my apartment lease expires, and it's places like Bakersfield that make me consider the Mass Ave area for big girl apartment #2.

Trendy vibe + amazing food & drinks. The best margaritas in the city made with freshly squeezed limes. The guacomole and tacos are always amazing. My favorites include the fish tacos & cochinita.

Sat outside for the first time since they blocked off the alley and opened up the outdoors. The artwork they have up on the buildings is awesome....small little bar back there with a poor guy that most be making a bajillion margaritas a day. Everything was great as always here...the margaritas, the guac...the chips. My regret is that I had already eaten that day and could not get my new obsession which is the Short Rib Torta....I debated with myself if I had the room to stuff it down...because it really is THAT good. Cheers Bakersfield!

As a Texas girl, I know my tacos, ok? And this place does a pretty good taco. My fave would be the cochinita pibil, a mound of shredded pork with a yummy (but not too hot) habanero salsa. The fish taco, as other reviewers have noted, is good, but not what I'm used to. The fish is more of a super crispy, battered fillet like one would expect with a fish n' chips basket, in my opinion. Chips and salsa (particularly the green one) here never fail to disappoint, and although the queso isn't your usual Tex-Mex fare, it's tasty. NB: keep a spoon handy, because it's basically a giant skillet of pure melted cheese, and it turns into one giant cheese patty pretty quickly. And the drinks here? Something for everyone and every budget. Who doesn't love PBR in a cute glass boot for $2? If you're feeling classier and have a little more cash in your wallet, I like the Manhattan. The one drink I would not recommend (sadly) is the house margarita. It's mostly mix, and very little tequila. If that's the only thing that disappoints me here, though, I'd say Bfield is doing all right. One other note: If you come here on a weekend, be prepared to wait. This place always seems to be one of the few packed places on Mass Ave.

This was an awesome experience from the time we entered until the time we left. The owner was top notch, checking on our party multiple times, even comping us a few shots of patron. The margaritas were strong, cold, and delicious. The tacos were rich in flavor and perfectly priced. The outdoor patio was amazing.

This place is great. I love the portions of the tacos. They're so adorable and they are filling just enough. However, what I really love is the chips and queso. That cheese dip is so good and it is a very unique kind of texture. I love the maragaritas there also. My favorite part about them is that they are generally strong and they come in a mason jar. The best part of this whole experience though is when they bring out the favorite drink card of a celebrity. I like to collect them. In fact, I nearly screamed and cried my pretty little brown eyes out until they turned green, because I lost Dolly Parton drink card and that was my absolute favorite. One last thing about this place is that everyone who is there seems to be really nice people, but they are also very easy on the eyes. This place is like every hungry young gay professional's dream.

Great atmosphere and unique food. It's a smaller menu but they have amazing tacos that are different than your run-of-the-mill mexican. The building is unique and I've experienced great service. Also freaking love the margaritas!

What do I love? Mexican food! What else do I love? Margaritas! What restaurant do I feel anticlimactic about that serves both of these items? Yep, you guessed it. Bakersfield. I really enjoy their margaritas here but I must say that I am not a fan at all of their food. I've went here so many times just hoping that this trip will turn my 3 stars into a 4, but it just sits at a 3 for me. Looks like a lot of folks love it, so make the decision for yourself :) I, however, will continue to roll my eyes a bit when friends suggest going here but...I can be lured in by the margaritas in glass shaped boots.

We came here for Cinco de Mayo. And YES it was busy; however we were greeted w/ great service and a fun atmosphere! Ben, the General Manager, even came around to personally greet us! Best value is the Milanesa sandwich! Tacos are great! Margs are flowing! Great way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo!

Can't believe I've never reviewed this place before! This is, by far, my favorite fun, outgoing, loud bar in the city. They have wonderful drinks and food, friendly (and attractive) staff, and great customer service. Their back patio is perfect for sipping on a margarita, eating some guac, and enjoying the weather when it's warmer. Yes, it can be a bit loud but it's a bar! The decor is awesome as well. Only thing I wish they would change is add more bathrooms. One just crowds up a bit too quickly, especially during busy hours. Other than that, I love love love this bar/restaurant! A definite must if you're in the city for the first time!

I went to Bakersfield for lunch and happy hour on Tuesday (the hostess recognized us. no shame.), so I thought a review was overdue. the queso/guac and drinks alone are worth the trip. that queso...it's more like fondue. Addictive. The guac is fresh with plenty of zing. Please enjoy a marg, but beware: These people do not mess around with their tequila. I repeat: tequila. I've heard the sangria is good, too. I've really liked all the tacos I've tried, but you do need chips & dip to make it a filling meal. Too bad, right? ;-)

Bakersfield is were taco dreams come true. They're the best, most fanciest, most delicious, most tastiest tacos that ever graced the Indianapolis food scene. The chicken tacos are not your average chicken tacos. The salsa will make you salivate. If you plan on going anytime or any day after 5:00 pm, expect to wait. But also expect that the margarita in your hand while you wait will be delicious and will help the time pass. Also, there's literally only one stall in the bathroom... so... hold it. I only had one bad experience here and it had nothing to do with the food. Our waitress took my card to cash out our ticket and didn't come back for 20 minutes. It was super odd and she claimed to have just forgotten, but I will just chock it up to one bad experience in a slew of really amazing ones.

I was in town for a conference and I asked a local about where to find good Mexican good. They said Bakersfield. Bakers...what? The name didn't exactly scream delicious Mexican food, but I trust the locals and off I went. It's definitely more of a hipster bar feel. I sat at a high top table. Small deduction in points for backless bar stools. I'm getting old and this back needs some support. Especially while I'm eating your delicious queso. You order the tacos Ala carte. LOVE that option. I got to try all kinds. We pretty much ordered one of everything. My favorite was the fish taco followed by the mole. But you can't go wrong with any of them. If you're looking for Mexican food covered in cheese sauce then this isn't the place for you. But if your love high quality ingredients, great service, and a fun ambiance I highly suggest visiting here. That local was spot on.

Margaritas y'all. Margaritas that are strong and served in mason jars. Not much not too not like huh? I'll admit I haven't actually eaten here... I've come here several times for late night bike ride refreshers. I feel like margaritas are excellent conversation starters and I've had many a good convo setting here with a lovely breeze coming in through their open windows. The staff is always friendly and cool with people just hanging out for a bit. This is one of my favorite spots on Mass Ave. I most certainly recommend this place!

  • Shalyn B.

The ambience and drinks are what keep me coming back to this Mass Ave haunt. It is seemingly always busy no matter what time or day which gives the place a lot of energy. The outdoor seating is splendid and has a really cool vibe. It can be hard to get a seat on a Friday and Saturday so just know that going in. I am partial to authentic Mexican food so I don't go there to eat but the drinks and pours are great.

Two words: sangria pitcher! These guys know what they are doing when it comes to Santeria and tequila Bakersfield is the place you want to go! I wanted to get the pastor taco but didn't get around to it. El pastor with pineapple! Just like Mexico City!

I had hoped and prayed for a street taco joint in Indy for years and then one day I woke up and there was Bakersfield! Inexpensive, high quality, delightful tacos - they truly nailed it! Their back alley patio is a delightful surprise and one of my favorite places to chill in Indy. The wait times can be lengthy but their hostesses are kind and they offer a texting service so you can roam the avenue if you don't find a spot at the bar to wait. My favorites are the Pastor and the Huitlacoche, honestly they are so good I can't bring myself to order anything else! Their guac is out of the park and their fresh squeezed Vodka Lemonades are at the top of my summer favorites list!

As far as concept for each taco, not too bad. Good quality meat with additions make each of them interesting. That being said, this isn't Houston Texas where the tacos are incredible; they do not have much competition (ie. Tamale place far superior in tacos but not a great atmosphere for Friday evening). The atmosphere is fun and the draft selection is typically on point which makes this a nice spot to meet friends. Chips and guacomole are also well done. I personally think there should be an additional salsa that is spicier. A tell-tell sign of a true taco or mexican location, there is always a spicy option for salsa, as there should be. Margaritas are solid and a house specialty.

I crave Mexican food almost on a daily basis, so I like to think that I know most of the best spots in Indy to find it. You want a tamale? You go to the Tamale Place. You want guacamole? Go to Adobo Grill- they make it table-side. Best overall menu and drinks? La Margarita in Fountain Square. Now then, where does Bakersfield fall? It's a hybrid of many of the places I mentioned above- their guac, imo, is a close second to Adobo. It's chunky, heavy on the lime, and comes with awesome chips- maybe the best chips in Indy!? Their tacos, of which I've had nearly all of the varieties, are fresh and cooked to order- and the tortillas are never soggy, which is one of major complaints about La Rev. The loss of the star comes from the atmosphere- pretty loud and jam-packed always. They also charge a lot for a relatively small portion. I can get three carne asada tacos at La Marg, rice, salad, and the chips/salsa are included, for $15. Bakersfield gives you nothing for free. All in all, I love the place and their food, and I know I'll be back! I'll just have to go early and save up some cash :)

Came with my husband for a meet and greet with new coworkers. On arrival, it seemed too loud and hectic for anyone to get to know each other. . . But then one of the gals who knew the spot ordered four pitchers of margarita, and I quickly changed my mind. With an order of crazy-good queso between us, somehow it wasn't as difficult as I imagined to scoot closer to former strangers and swap stories, leaning in to hear over the joviality surrounding us. The tacos were tasty and fun, particularly the Pastor (oh, that pineapple, though!), so if you can handle a rowdy (but well-dressed. . .) crowd, this is the "It" spot for a gourmet bite and drink downtown after work.

SHORT REVIEW: The margaritas are great. Let me revise that, the Premium Margarita is amazing. Oh, and their queso and chips...please get the queso and chips. If you're feeling adventurous, go for the gusto and add the meat to the queso with a side of fresh guacamole. LONG REVIEW: (See Short Review. This place is a 'Must Visit.' From the apps to the vibe, Bakersfield is doing a lot of things right in a small way. It's the small things that count, right?)

Great place! Good beer and alcohol selection, not to mention $2 PBRs (great for downtown!). Salsa is great and they have 'real' tacos, not tex-mex slop. Awesome atmosphere and is one of our favorite places to spend an evening having some beers.

Great music. Great taco. Stopped in today for lunch with a friend. We got chips and queso $5. They bring out 2 bottles of salsa. One red & one green. The red is better. The tacos are either $3 or $4 each. The short rib was really good. It had pickled onions on it. Also they have $2 PBR pints everyday. Cant wait to go back and try a couple different tacos.

  • Franklin D.

The tacos are a bit on the pricey side at around $4 a piece, but they taste pretty good. Couple people I know rave about the guacamole. It's not as good as abuelita's, but decent for bar food.

We stopped in after checking out Motorcycles on Meridian last night. We were in town for the Moto GP and wanted a nice, fun bar. Jeremiah was our waiter and he was top notch! Unfortunately, we had eaten about 2 hours earlier so we really only wants drinks, but he was ok with it. Our drinks were terrific and what a great place! We will definitely be back next year! Mahalo for the great service!

Yum fish taco! Guacamole is the best! Company even better! Girls night out! Drinks are potent and the chips are never ending! Looks like a local hangout. It's a must return! Although service is a little slow so get your check early if you are in your way to the theater.

I was so excited to hear that they were opening a location here in Indy after requesting the OTR place many times. I am so sad it took me SO long to get down here! We walked in around 5pm on a Saturday night and were quoted 30 minutes for 4 people. Not too shabby. After elbowing up to the bar and ordering a pitcher of mars for the girls and some PBR's for the boys, we made it out to the patio area, which was great! In warm weather, it would be so much fun to sit out there for a few hours and enjoy some margaritas and chips. We ended up only having to wait about 20 minutes for our table, which was great. After being seated, I knew I was having tacos and I knew I was getting the huitlacoche and pastor tacos. However, we decided to start the night out with chips, salsa, guacamole, and queso. Their quest is to die for. It is rich, thick, and salty. A perfect complement to their crunchy tortilla chips. I prefer it with the chorizo in the queso, but we opted to forego that this time. Their guacamole is seriously delicious, and I could eat it by the spoon. So when it came time to order, I did indeed get my normal order but also threw in a mole chicken taco. This one ended up being my favorite!! It was smoky, the meat was tender, and it was great. I also love the huitlacoche with the cotija cheese, and the pastor taco is a standard with pork and pineapple. How yummy is that. After another round of margaritas, we decided it was time to go, but I am definitely making sure that it is not so long before I come again. Can't wait for warmer weather to enjoy their patio!

Gosh... Bakersfield has my heart. I've told everyone who has come here with me.. TRY THE SHORTRIB! The fish tacos are delicious as well, but every time I try something new here I wish I would have gotten the short rib taco. The atmosphere is peaceful yet fun. We tend to sit on the back patio at the communal tables and we've always had a great experience making new friends with other like minded Indy residents. The house margarita and the cheese dip are also just haves. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is due to the consistently long wait times, although there's so much to do on Mass Ave in the meantime that it's never been too much of a bother.

I'm still not sure if this place is real. I would have never gone here on my own, but we ended up here for a company event. Actually, it wasn't really ideal for our event, but that wasn't the fault of Bakersfield. Firstly, I was way too old for this place and it was a TUESDAY. I'm probably going to have to come back, but it can't be on a weekend. If, at 38, I felt like the oldest person in the world on a Tuesday, I can never come back after Wednesday at 5:00 PM. I might be able to sneak in around noon on a Saturday, before the youthful crowd wakes. Its loud in here, but I guess that's what the youngsters go for these days. Its okay because I've never been known for being quiet and I can hang. We were downstairs, which is cozy and concrete, which sounds strange. Due to it being a company event, I didn't order off of the menu. Pitchers of margarita and sangria hit the tables. I was driving, so I stuck to water (on the rocks). It was never refilled, but I attribute that to the chaos and not the server. I just drank someone else's. Baskets of hot chips with salsa and guacamole hit the tables. I may have eaten an entire bowl of guac on my own. I'm not sure. It was delicious. The red and green salsas were each very good, too. I'm not sure if there was a difference between the salsas in the squeeze bottles on the table and the salsas in the bowls, served with the chips. If there was, I couldn't tell. It didn't stop me from shoveling chips into my pie hole riddled with a variety of each. Dip. Scoop. Squirt. Shove. I did it all, gracefully, I might add. Then, the heavens opened and a handsome dread covered gentleman came in with a dish of bubbling gold. "What the fresh hell is that?" I thought, as someone else verbalized it in a classier tone. "Queso," Adonis answered. I put my chip right there in that shit and it was freakin' awesome. "Is it good?" I heard. With my mouth full, I said, "I don't even like cheese and its the best thing I've ever had." Tacos came on large aluminum trays reminiscent of bin lids. I kept hearing words like "fish," "chicken," and "short rib," but there was no real way for me to tell and I just dug in. I loaded up my plate with four tacos and sat down with my peeps. I folded the first one up and dug in. They are the best tacos in Indianapolis. I promise you. They are just full of flavor and texture. The toppings are unique slaws, pickled onions, thinly sliced radish and more. Hot. Cold. Crunchy. Sweet. Salty. All in the same mouthful. Really very good. Then I realized I ate way too much. So, I left and drove home with my pants unbuttoned.

This place is an absolute five stars for the type of establishment they are. They are not a five star restaurant, but I believe they provide a five star experience. I wouldn't say they have the best food I've ever had but the tacos are at the top of the list of tacos I've ever had. I've read the other reviews and agree with some of the gripes. It is crowded, but that's because the drinks and food are good and the service is decent. To give a warning this is a place you go more for the experience then the food or drinks. If your in the mood for a quite and quick dinner this place isn't for you. BUT if you have good company and are looking for a couple of drinks, and something to much on you will love it.

I had avoided Bakersfield for a long while, though not for lack of positive recommendations. It was because every time I stopped by, the wait seemed eternal, there was little space to stand, and I ended up finding a meal elsewhere instead. I finally stopped in with a group committed to the endeavor, willing to put in the hour and ten necessary to get a table. Happily, the wait took only twenty minutes, and I learned from one of my friends there that the wait is often much, much shorter than the announced time. If true, I'm curious to know if this a tactical move to steer away the uninitiated, or if it is just a blunder of a guess, as it seems most restaurants can get within at least a ten minute margin of the predicted time without such a gross over-estimation. Either way, it's worth the "wait." The drink selection is solid, and the tacos are delicious. I often comment on my vegetarianism as a limitation here, but it certainly wasn't -- I was more than satiated by the fare, as were my more carnivorous colleagues. Honestly, my only gripe about the place is the same thing that moved Bazbeaux out of the space -- it just isn't big enough. It's awkward and tiny for such a solid restaurant. I can think of a half-dozen spots on Mass Ave. I'd love to see Bakersfield switch places with, and although I know it doesn't work that way, I hope they take their early success as an indication to expand soon. I'm sure it's worth the wait.

  • Joanna S.

Always Overcrowded. Pretty strong margs. The table wait is always 2+ hours on a fri or sat. Will try back on a less crowded night! Despite the popularity, you can escape the heat and crowd in the AC'd basement. Swanky down there!

One Sunday, a few weeks ago...myself and a cohort set out to find "Truly the BEST" Margarita in Indy. We used a combination of IndyStar, Google and Yelp rankings to determine our stops along the way. This was a Margarita Crawl that started at 10AM and ended at 10PM. We made it to 9 locations. Paced ourselves well. Our third stop was Bakersfield. PEOPLE!!!! Bakersfield Has the VERY BEST Margarita in Indianapolis...Hands Down! No close seconds. Their Guacamole was pretty Amazing Too; and I'd have to rate it Best in Indy as well. I highly recommend you ask the bartenders about the Margaritas that are not on the menu. We experienced tastings of three of their Margaritas. Two of which were not included on the menu. Our Favorite being the 'Spicy' Margarita. Even if you don't like spicy flavors or jalapenos, you will love the balance this masterpiece brings! A MUST TRY!!! The bartenders at Bakersfield are True Professionals, and take pride in their libations. I applaud the entire staff for making our experience a very special one.

I liked Bakersfield a lot! This place is small but cozy. Service was friendly. The food was a little on the expensive side, but so worth it! I ordered two tacos and that, along with chips and guac that I shared with my boyfriend, was enough to fill me up. Speaking of which, this place has THE BEST chips and guacamole! I definitely recommend ordering it. As far as tacos go, I ordered the pastor and the fish taco. The pastor was the best I've ever tasted! However, the fish taco was just OK for me. My boyfriend ordered the short rib and the pollo rojo tacos and I enjoyed tasting those a lot as well!

Fantastic tacos! Best fish taco in the city. Cochinita Pibil, short ribs, and el pastor are among the favorites. As a whiskey lover, I always skip the brown water and order a margarita. They are insane. This place is loud, there's usually a line, and can occasionally be filled with some judgmental hipsters. Don't let that stop you from checking Bakersfield out!

This place has the best Margaritas in Indy! The guacamole appetizer is a must have. The tacos are incredible, with great bursts of flavor and spice. By far my favorite mexican food in Indy.

Definitely the hot spot on mass ave where the attractive people mix with the mass ace hipsters. The place is usually packed in spite of their very average food. Guacamole is great, but otherwise you can get better street tacos elsewhere. Decent beer selection and tons of liquor choices. Strong drinks. Enter into middle of space and immediately hit the hostess station. Behind the hostess is a square bar with seating on three sides. To right of bar is mixed seating including obnoxious barrel tables that are uncomfortable. To the left (west) of bar are picnic tables for group, and that uncomfortable do we make eye contact and talk when the hostess seats two couples at same table, seating. Lots of people movement including up and down the stairs to the west of the bar. Downstairs is a cool space that has wall tables and a small bar. Also has a private party room. Actual bar is very large. Stone bar top with no rail. Great, comfy stools. Bar back of brick wall, tons of shelves for bottles and tvs. Enjoy the rare occasion you get the boot beer glass. Don't steal all of them please. Fun outdoor patio to east of building with superb wire lighting. Leave a note for someone on the chalkboard near the restrooms. Fun place that gets very busy, decent tacos but nothing special, and great beers/drinks.

This is one of my favorite spots on Mass Ave. Tacos and margaritas is a weekly thing for me- when I am in Indy this is definitely where you will find me. Great atmosphere. Chips, guac, and salsa is a definite must with a margarita served in a mason jar. The tacos are where it's at. Pastor and the short rib are my favs on the menu. Cute space in the basement as well. Great place for a happy hour with co-workers or to spend a Friday night. This place definitely fills up at night so plan to have a few drinks at the bar while waiting for a spot to eat.

This place is very cool. Great crowd, friendly bartenders, good food. Admittedly, the menu is limited. But they do what they do and do it well. Got a seat at the bar around 7:30 on a Sat night. Had chips and guacamole and 2 tacos - the pork one and the braised beef rib. Both were good, but I liked the pork one better. By 9:30 ish the place was really packed. The night may have been young... But I'm not. I'll come here again.

Hubs and I stopped in for a cocktail and a bite before heading to a show at Old National Center. We pulled up to a table in the window and got to enjoy the after-work people watching that comes standard on Mass Ave. I'd been in for drinks before, but had never had a chance to enjoy the food. We ordered a pitcher of sangria while we perused the menu (it all sounded so good!). Thank goodness the sangria didn't come with a long curly straw, I might have downed the whole thing - so tasty and refreshing. I ordered a couple tacos while Hubs got the chicken torta. He won. Hands down - amazing. I'm going back just for that... no nibbling off of his. My very own torta. Service was friendly and helpful (a big deal for an indecisive girl like me) without being pushy.

I visited Bakersfield while in Indianapolis visiting a friend. I was informed that I had to try the margarita, because it was the bar's speciality, so I did! It was good, but honestly a little too tart for my liking. They have a very simple food menu, consisting mainly of ~10 taco choices. I tried the pork belly with pineapple and thought it was tasty. I've also tried the queso fundido which was super indulgent and good. I mean, how could one not enjoy a skillet of gooey, melted and slightly toasted cheese on chips? Very crowded with young people and clearly one of the cool places to be on the weekend!!

I made it in here recently to have some snacks. I suppose I'll start with the building... Pretty neat set up on each floor, and quite a bit of room for seating. There are also a few rooms and what looked like another bar downstairs. Yes, I should have been paying more attention for a more observant and definitive statement. Fail, me. For appetizers we had some chips, guacamole, sauces, and queso. I pillaged through these with a pretty good sense of enjoyment. To eat I had the short rib torta. It was good, but didn't quite tickle my prostate. I will say adding some sauce did assist. The tacos looked good, and I had a small sense of regret for not ordering these. I'm guessing if I come back and have some drinks and tacos I'll probably be a little higher on this place :) All in all it was a great visit, excellent service... As well as personable, non-robotic service. I'll be back sometime I'm sure.

Love! If you are looking to hang the crowd but not fill up on junk food this is a great place. The tacos are small bits. Think Tapas or Pinchos/Pintxos(Basque). Fresh ingredients and a great presentation. We will go back. When I love a restaurant it gets the beat feet rating from me it is worthy of a visit. This is not typical taco.

Very happy with this place! Great texmex theme, inexpensive food and drink specials...I will be back! I came with a few friends on a Sunday and we had a great time. $2 tacos $3 chips & salsa $2 PBR and $3 shot specials made this a great place to go and not spend too much. The short rib tacos were so good!! We went around 3 and got seating at the bar without trouble but the place really started to fill up by the time we left around 5:30. It's small inside so expect a wait for dinner!

I'm writing this update based on the responses I've received from the restaurant. While I won't be back any time soon as I'm about 6 hours away I can say that they handle complaints or poor reviews with grace and generosity. Go here for the margaritas.

Bakersfield never lets me down. GREAT MARGS (a little pricey so just go ahead and get the pitcher) and even better chips with queso. Always busy no matter a monday or friday night, but no worries the service is always fast and friendly!

There is just something about unique flavors that make you go yummmmm. Bakersfield is a very cool taco, tequila, and whiskey bar that delivers amazingly well paired tastes. Bakersfield can look very busy when you first walk in but looks can be deceiving. There a huge downstairs section that can be a bit more low key. The menu is not complicated but full of your favorites, chips and salsa, guacamole, quesso dip. Their salsa is made in house and is amazing. The quesso is different - more the consistency of hummus - not my favorite but give it a try. Let's talk taco's. This little slice of heaven serves small plate tacos, the cost is only $3-$4 each so try a few!! The fish taco is amazing. Stop in and give it a try!

I've love this place but they don't have Wi-Fi. I'm not sure what as money as they charge for one taco why they can't provide Wi-Fi.

I loved the atmosphere, it was crowded and "hopping" all night, the only thing is as a "Mexican", I know tacos are not that expensive. It was too much for me, I am used to paying $1.50 a taco, other than that the food was good. If you want to get white girl wasted try the Premium Margarita.

The guacamole is amazing. Their margaritas are amazing. Their prices are a bit high. The atmosphere is trendy. The view is top notch. When you are in here you feel as if you are who everybody wants to be. Tacos are small. Let me say it again....small. but they are yummy

Just prepare yourself: There is always, always, ALWAYS a wait for Bakersfield. And when I say a wait, I mean HOURS. Sometimes is almost a three hour wait, BUT they take your number and text you and the beauty of this place is that its on Mass Ave, so you can go grab a few drinks somewhere else or wait on the patio and not worry about missing your name :) I love the mason jar margaritas but what keeps this girl coming back are the tacos! I mean, they are truly amazing. I always opt into the mole for my first 'co but switch up for my second, whether it is the fish taco or the pork, I have yet to be disappointed! Alas, I am getting ahead of myself...the cheese dip. MY LANDS. It is to die for. If you are watching your cheese intake, steer clear because one bowl of this stuff and you'll be hooked! Throw in an app of guacamole and you're in for it. Mass Ave has really got a winner on its hands with this one ;)

I wish I could give this place more than 5 stars! We visit here often and it is always amazing! Make sure to try the fish tacos, I've never had a better fish taco anywhere!! Margaritas are strong and made from scratch, so delicious! Always friendly service! I recommend Bakersfield to people all the time!

I've come to the conclusion that this place is always packed, and rightfully so because it is awesome. Good food, lethal margaritas and a totally cool ambience. I bumped up my rating because right after my review the owner and general manager contacted me about the service I received, which is totally awesome and shows they actually give a crap! The service I received Friday and Saturday was great. I do recommend sitting at the bar.. we were very well taken care of. Overall I totally recommend! Forgot to mention- we fell in love with the black beans.. spicy and delicious!

My friends and I were brave and went here on Cinco de Mayo. YES, it was jam packed, but so was every other Mexican joint in town!!!! There was a very long wait (2+ hours), but we didn't mind. We were there to hang out! Once finally seated, our drink order took a very long time. However, our appetizers came out quickly and we were eating in no time. The wait staff were very friendly and apologetic and the GM, Ben, came over to personally apologize for the wait time. The atmosphere was vibrant, the food was delicious, and the staff were great!!! Note: Bakersfield is a trendy Mexican/taco place on Mass Ave. Expect to wait, but it's worth it.

We recently went back for a 2nd visit and still loving it. Customer service at this place is top notch. Tacos and margaritas were still amazing! We've also decided that they have the best queso, hands down. Ben, the GM, was great and wants to make sure everyone is having a great experience!

Great place for tacos. Atmosphere is fantastic and so is food. Must try fish tacos and pastor. The guacamole and chips are fresh and delish. Best margarita I've ever had. Try weekend lunchtime for no wait.

Mr. Rogers might have asked, "Can you say huitlacoche?" After years of trying to learn Spanish, I still barely can. But to have delicious, tacos de huitlacoche in Indianapolis was a treat. the chicken mole tacos seemed holy, and the fish tacos contained perfectly-fried, with a fine, crunchy texture. The guacamole was tasty, though perhaps a little too chunky. I couldn't scoop it without breaking the chips, though some mashing with the provided spoon wasn't a huge problem. Traditional taquerías serve tacos with two corn tortillas--they should do the same here, as it happened that the single layer ripped as I ate. A hip, smallish environment, with a big bar is comfortable, though I would have preferred more-experienced waitstaff to the barbie with the phony smile that served me, but I got my food. Unfortunately, I was too good and didn't try the margarita at 4 pm; since I knew I wanted to try a cocktail at Libertine (spoiler alert--the Yelpers' adoration is justified) before I hopped my Megabus back to Chicago (I wasn't THAT good).

Update: both the manager and owner reached out to me. Clearly the ownership and management care very much about their customer's experience. I'm still a fan and will continue enjoying evenings at Bakersfield. Original Post: Food was very good and at the right price. I recommend it as a decent fall back plan. Service was awful but it was probably just our waiter. He took my beer and food when I got up to go the the restroom... I was half way done with both. He didn't know what was on draft and kept making stuff up about the beers. I asked what ipas they had on draft and he recommended, and I quote, "A local pale ale from Breckenridge that is similar to blue moon." I provided the youngster with a geography lesson but let him continue believing Blue Moon is an IPA.

They finally kicked the barrel tables to the curb. With those awkward straddle monsters out of the way you're free to enjoy the best queso dip and margaritas in Indy without worrying what to do with your legs. Sometimes they have a long wait, but that's a small price to pay for superb tacos in a great location. Pro tip : always, always, always get at least one margarita. I would also argue it's the best people watching location on Mass Ave.

Only been here for drinks with friends but tonight, the boyfriend and I decided to have dinner here on a whim. Oh. My. Goodness. I'm glad we did! Service, food, and ambiance... awesome! To be honest, even after reading the reviews on here, I was still a little skeptical, but after ordering their fish tacos ($4 each), chips and queso ($5), and short rib tortas ($9)... I was very glad I gave this place a chance. While the fish tacos and short rib tortas were both delicious, the queso stood out to me the most. It did not taste like your average chips and queso dish, it's definitely very addictive. Of course, I had to order the margarita as well. The service was great and price range was right, needless to say, the boyfriend and I will be back for another meal very soon.

This place has pretty average food. It's edible but nothing memorable or amazing. The atmosphere is cool and I think that makes up a little but for the lack of flavor in the food. We ordered chips, salsa, and guacamole and some tacos. The chips were fine-kind of bland but a good vessel for the salsa and guacamole. The guacamole was bland it definitely needed something. There were two salsas and one was absolutely disgusting. The red smoky salsa was so gross. I should say that I hate the flavor of smoke and I'm a firm believer that it should stay out of salsa because it overpowers everything else. But the salsa verde was good and I stuck with that. I also ordered the fish tacos and I wanted to like them but here is why I didn't-the aioli. The menu mentioned nothing about this addition so maybe it was a mistake but I HATE aioli. If it wasn't a mistake, it might be nice to add that to the menu so that I can tell you that I don't like it before I write it in a yelp review. There was supposed to be a Tabasco lime sauce-and if this was it, it tasted nothing like Tabasco or lime. The service was fine. Our server was perfectly friendly and attentive. There was a weird bio-hazard needle container in the bathrooms. We asked our server about it and she said that a needle had been found in the bathroom at one of the other locations so they had added these containers to all of the bathrooms. What? That's not something that I expected to see at a taco joint.

I hear NOTHING but awesome things about Bakersfield. This can mean one of two things - it's good or it's BAD with a lot of hype. I am happy to report it's good! It's fun and although I have heard from some friends, it's "not real Mexican". OOOOK, but sometimes, people prefer something that's "not real" if it means it's "still really f-ing good". My favorite is the short rib tacos. The flavors are deep and the meat is the bomb. I didn't love the pork -- too spicy and trying too hard for me. The queso is delectable. And....let's talk about the guac. I mean, HELLO -- so good! Little kick but pure fresh avocados (where are they getting them?!?!) and a perfect side for those amazing margs. I mean, refreshing, just enough salt and not too much sweet and sour. I have heard it's difficult to get in sometimes, but I've gone twice in the last couple of months with no issue. I prefer sitting at the bar, where we got fantastic service and enjoyed interacting with the bartenders. Everyone was super friendly and the overall vibe is easy going, casual and chill. I liked it. A lot.

My parents love to come to this place when they are in town. It seems like we always end up ordering the same thing. That's because the food is delicious! The guacamole is chunky, and can be a little difficult to eat, but totally worth it. Both the short rib and Milanesa (fried chicken cutlet) torta are wonderful and filling. It always seems like I save half of my sandwich for lunch the next day. They also have great margaritas the go well with anything. Furthermore, the service is good and we have never had to wait for a table a lunchtime. Unless something changes, I'm sure we'll keep coming back here, which is fine by me.

Haven't been in a while because of dental issues. This was one of my destinations to celebrate eating normally again (tacos with a fork and knife just doesn't do it). Best.tacos.ever. The chinchintas (sp?) pork is exceptional, and the mole chicken is also fantastic. My husband raves about the bistec. The pollo rojo is good, but the is outshadowed by the acidity and spice of the others. Can't wait to try the pork belly. The wine selection is limited, but that's ok. The cab is great and the lack of choice actually ensures fresh bottles. We'll be back.

It was a very cool place to go. The atmosphere was very hip. It's a pretty small place. Mostly a bar but had some regular seating as well. My friend and I went here Tuesday before a concert. We were seated at what looked like a tall barrel with bar stools. Pretty cool. Our waiter was nice and helped to explain things on the menu. We each got one mole taco and one pollo rojo taco. My friend also got a margarita. Though the food was pretty good (pollo rojo was delicious) the price vs size proportion we felt was off. We thought it was pricy for the small sized tacos. But overall it was a great experience! Great for anyone who is a whiskey drinker! They have all sorts of types.

I LOVE BAKERSFIELD! We are from Chicago, so we know our tacos, and I can honestly say that Bakersfield is doing it right. Everything they make is fresh, delicious and well done. I'm a big fan of the guacamole and the queso. I could eat them all day, but don't, because you need to save room for the tacos! Short rib and fish are my personal faves, but in all honesty, they're all good and you can't go wrong. And the thing is, they're are super consistent. It's the same every time and I've never had a bad experience. Best thing to do is go with a bunch of friends, order a ton of food and margaritas, and kick back for a good time! The service is great and very attentive, even though its usually crowded. It's crowded for a reason, because its AWESOME! I hope they make their way up to Chicago some day soon.

Bakersfield is amazing. Coming from Chicago, where eating at a place like this would probably come at a high price and with snobby service, we were pleasantly surprised to find out how friendly, affordable, and delicious Bakersfield is. The queso dip with chorizo was absolutely outstanding, I could've eaten that alone for dinner and been completely satisfied. The margarita was good, not watered down, and our favorite tacos out of the 5 we tried were the short rib and pastor tacos. Our total for 2 drinks, an appetizer, and 8 tacos was around $55. The atmosphere was great, our server was friendly, and the food was so good. We will definitely be back!

Sometimes you need a stiff marg. Sometimes you need hot melty cheese and salty chips. Sometimes you need to repeat the above. This place hits all my needs and only leaves me wanting more. Bakersfield is like a prescription for turning a bad day around. If only sweatpants were permitted.

Wow!!! This place makes some killer tacos!!! I've always visited on the weekend so it has always been super busy, but that doesn't effect the quality of the food or service at all. The waitstaff and bartenders are on top of things and the kitchen must be doing tricks to keep food coming out at the pace they do. Bakersfield also has the best cheese dip I've had, and I add the home pickled jalapenos for an extra kick. So good! Also, right now they have Curious Traveller on tap which is my favorite shandy. This place is my new go-to for tacos!

Bakersfield is one of those places you really don't want to like, because nobody shuts up about how much they love it. You're lucky if you even get a table, especially on the weekends, eeespecially in the summer. A lot of times you don't want to because there can be bros drenched in Aqua di Gio and drunk white girls cascading over the tables. But I have to admit, with the hype, comes verification. The tacos, guac, and margs really are amazing. Pungent flavors and no weakness in the drinks. Definitely a fun place IF you're planning on coming with friends and hanging for a bit. Not a good place to come solo, however. The interior is also something to be appreciated for sure. Last but not least, shout out to the staff for their resilience! I know I couldn't handle all of that bombardment, you guys really know how to handle it.

Great guacamole, $2 PBRs, and scrumptious tacos! Tried both the fish & spare rib..I'd get both again!! Try to sit out back in the garden area, great on a beautiful day! We will be back!!

Bakersfield was just ok. It gets a lot of hype, but I've had much better tacos elsewhere and I can't justify giving it 4 stars for a couple reasons. I started with a drink called the Red Headed Stranger which seemed like it should have some great flavor thanks to the bourbon and cayenne pepper, but it really didn't taste like much at all. Not bad just sort of bland. Next we had the chips and guac which also came with a red and green salsa. The red salsa was probably the highlight of the meal. It was delicious and had this great smoky flavor to it. Plenty of chips and they'll keep refilling the chips if you run out. The guac was good tho would've been better if they'd chopped up or mashed up the avacado a bit - there were huge chunks made it difficult to eat. We each had three tacos. I went with the short rib, the pollo rojo, and the cochinita. The major problem with each of the three was the same, there was waaaaay too much queso fresco on each taco. The queso fresco became the overpowering flavor for each taco. I took to shaking off as much of it as I could. The meat in each was fine but a little dry. The short rib was the best as it had some good flavor and texture to it. My last comment is on service. I don't think I've ever had a waiter who looked so completely disinterested in his job. There was no "Hello, how are you?" never asked if we wanted more water or how things were. He just showed up and bluntly asked "What do you want to drink?" and then "What do you want to eat?" Don't think he said anything else all night.

One of my Indy go-to spots, this place never disappoints! Margaritas are fresh and limey, not made of the artificial stuff. Love the qua smile and the fish tacos are to DIE for. Probably the best I've ever had. The price point is decent. I usually have 3 tacos. At $4 a piece, $12 for a main course isn't bad. Add a drink and app and you under $30. I only give it 4 stars because I can't give half stars here, and I wish they served dessert... a slice of tres levels cake would take it over the top for me!

Amazing food and awesome drinks! The tacos are fresh and unique. The margaritas are the best I have ever had. They make their sour mix from scratch, so drinks like whiskey sours are amazingly fresh and delicious! I have taken several friends to Bakersfield, and everyone loves it!

Went here for New Year's for the first time with the hubby and then again with my girlfriends a month later for my birthday. This place is awesome! The tacos are small, so I usually get about 3 when I go and the margaritas are fire. If you're looking for a place to hang out for hours with good drinks and good eats, Bakersfield is where its at. Located on Mass Ave, it has the atmosphere most people dream of when looking for a place to eat on a Saturday night. Get there early though, not a lot of seating. We got lucky when we went and had the perfect table in the middle, great for people watching. There is a downstairs area with another bar, very dark, great date night spot. The tacos are fresh, authentic...puts every other taco you've ever had to shame. Check it out!

Great tacos! The wait is long but it's worth it. We went across the road to ball and a biscuit for drinks while we waited for our table. Yummy margarita's and great guacamole too! I can't wait to go back and try everything else they have.

I'm not sure what the big deal is about Bakersfield. It is basically a hipsters paradise and that's about it. I'm basing my review on the food, which is just 3-star worthy. The atmosphere is cool, but not worth all the hype. PROS: 1) Their chips and guac are yummy, I was a fan 2) The set up of the place is nice with an outdoor/indoor area 3) I like that you get a postcard with your receipt, cute and funky. 4) They serve food late at night, yaya! 5) I love that they have a cute outdoor area. Not many places in Indy have that! CONS: 1) I've had every taco on the menu. They're good,...and that's all. Definitely not amazing or "the place to go for tacos". (The fish and al pastor taco were my favorite) 2) My friends and I occasionally come here to day drink. Their pitchers of margaritas are just alright, personally I think they're watered down and sometimes overly sweet. Overall this place is ridiculously crowded on the weekends with people swarming to get in and look cool eating not-so-amazing tacos, but thinking they are amazing lol. To each their own I guess. Go to La Parada if you want more legit mexican food.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
