Best restaurant in Indy for great classic Italian food. They serve the good stuff not just the usual American Italian menu items.

We liked it. It's hard to find, behind a strip mall, across from a long closed movie place. But here are the pros. 1. Small, but beautiful decor. Doesn't look corporate, looks real. Small bar, but awesome design. Love it. 2. Our server, Jonathan. One of the best we ve ever had. A real pro. Ask for him, he's worth it. 3, mushroom app. Great. A little over priced at 13. But very tasty. 4. Entrees. Awesome. Wife had the chicken cat and I had the lobster cann. Both came out almost too hot too eat. That was some seriously good food. 5. Prices were good. Not great, but all things considered, fair. Here are the cons. 1. No kids allowed. That's ok for us but maybe not others. However, we saw 2 diff tables with kids clearly under 16. 2. Hard to find. Look for it. We will come back. They have a 8 once filet on the menu for $36 that says it's prime. The waiter swears to me it is prime. Gotta try that. Jonathan says it's the best filet in Indy. Next visit, I ll update. Bottom line, go here, ask for Jonathan, enjoy your meal for a fraction more than you d pay at Olive Garden or buca de crapo. Thank me later.

I was looking for an authentic Italian restaurant on the northside, somewhere around where I live and I found it right here at Almalfi! The food was authentic tasting and their menu is beautiful to behold with every item listed in Italian and English- and the customer service was right on point and super friendly and helpful. I'll end this review with two words, in Italian: Molto bene!

Good choice for Italian food. This place is hidden behind a strip mall, and is across from a closed-down movie theater. Not the greatest location. Salads - The salads were alright. You can get a Caesar Salad but it's served on a very tiny dessert plate. Or you can get half the caprese salad, which means you get 2 tomatoes and 2 mozzarella slices for $6. The best choice is the soup. All of the salads were pretty good, nice presentation, but the vegetable soup was best. It had lots of potatoes in it which really thickened it up. Good flavor. Entrees are split into pasta, seafood, veal, and chicken. All entrees are served over spaghetti noodles and cost $18-20. The Spaghetti Carbonara and Spaghetti Bolognese looked amazing, and the group I was with said they were good. I got the Chicken Cacciatore, and it was really good but I was surprised how many mushrooms it came with. Also served with dinner are hard rolls and butter. I think all of the food tasted great. It's not the most memorable Italian I've ever had, but it was good. As others have said, this place is dead empty at 6pm on a weekend. If you don't want to be the only one in the restaurant, go later around 7-9pm. I can't decide whether to give this place a 3 or 4 rating. The food was good, not amazing but good. But the prices, interior decor, and location make me want to go with 3 stars.

I first experience with this place was 10 years ago and it was great. So I was looking forward to going there again when our friends asked us out. Last night was a big let down. My wife got the chicken lasagna special (this was her favorite when we were dating). It was visual appealing and really full of chicken but the flavor was lacking anything memorable. I got the veal over pasta and asparagus. The veal was good but I was expecting the pasta to be something special but I was wrong. The pasta was just buttered spaghetti. The asparagus was ok but the garlic chunks on it were huge and the other seasoning was just butter.

Food was delicious. Service was terrible and crazy slow. Then the server outright refused to split the check. I'd go back only if I had 4 hours or so to kill and somebody else was buying.

Can not believe more people have not written a review for this amazing restaurant. By far the best Italian in Indianapolis. So authentic and romantic! I kind of like that it is a little secret. But should share. You will not be disappointed. The stuffed peppers and chicken lasagne are our favorites. Enjoy!

We have eaten here many many times, but on Saturday, December 13th, something was definitely off. We were a party of 4. Three of us ordered the stuffed red pepper, and one ordered chicken marsala. It took OVER AN HOUR for us to get our dinner. Remember 3 of us ordered the stuffed pepper...which I'm sure was already prepared. When we asked the waiter about our dinner, he said our order was behind a group of 25 people! YIKES! We should have left. When we finally got our dinner, it was cold, like it had been sitting in the kitchen too long. We mentioned it to our waiter, and it was obvious he didn't care. While clearing our dishes, he dropped a piece of silverware that almost hit me and he left it on the floor!! Surely this must have been this waiter's last night. Let's hope so. He could have made it a much better experience if he cared.

Delicious and Fun! Great wine selection and wonderful food! The food is flavorful with just the right combinations of flavors, there is almost something "soft" about the noodles in a way I've never had noodles before. They were truly amazing and I believed made from scratch! The owner came to great us, and he is a delightful Italian man with the most incredible accent. Finding the place was a bit of a challenge, it seems like you are driving behind a bunch of businesses and then BAM, there it is! This is a must try!! Only reason for not giving 5 stars: the location... it's in a weird place, but worth the hunt!

Had a wonderful dinner last night. Calamari was perfect. Veal and salmon were cooked to perfection. It is a little pricey, but we'll worth it.

Great Italian at a very reasonable price. It's in a not so hot location = reputation carries this place. Great service even on Valentine's Day. I will come back again!

It was over priced for the quality of the food and we felt rushed by our waiter. The setting of the restaurant was nice though.

Are You Kidding Me?... Three stars for being petty and overpriced. So, the atmosphere is very nice. The wait staff, very cordial. The food, rather good, even though somewhat expensive. BUT... how petty when an allegedly upscale restaurant charges you $1.50 for "rocks", when the price of the scotch was already excessive. And then another up-charge of $2.00 for anchovies on a caesar salad (which should come with anchovies anyway). Give me a break. So, if you don't mind being ripped off, then this place isn't too bad.

I love this place. I used to go here with folks from work. I have been here a few times with my wife as well. Just had dinner here the other night with a few family members. Mario and Joni welcomed us all. I think the stuffed red peppers are my favorite. However the salmon that I had was the best salmon ever. Great place, great people and great food.

The couple we were dining with told me that the owner was one of 3 brothers who came from Italy, and their mother is often in the kitchen cooking herself. I believe it! Very authentic, absolutely delicious. Nothing over seasoned or drown in cheese or seasonings, everything was just right. I had the Mozzarella E Prosciutto Crudo appetizer. I swear the cheese was just made that day! The prosciutto was generously sliced with just the right saltiness. I ordered the eggplant parmigiana for dinner, which is my favorite Italian dish. I order it at every new Italian place I go to and see how they stack up. The eggplant was tender and delicious, not too much sauce or cheese. Hands down the best I have ever had, and I am from Chicago where we have some seriously good Italian restaurants. Ambiance was perfect. It was dimly lit, quiet, and the waitstaff was very knowledgeable. I only wish they had fewer specials because I really wanted one of everything :) It's a bit hard to notice as it is tucked in the back of a strip mall, by a Salvation Army drop off. If you hit the JoAnn Fabrics you've gone too far. So turn back around and head back towards 86th and turn back behind the Starbucks. It's well worth the scavenger hunt!

This is probably some of the more authentic Italian food you will find in the city! You can tell the pasta is freshly made and the sauces are as though they have their own food group. I rediscovered macaroni and cheese here! I don't know how you redefine something so simple, but they did! I can go here and get the chicken alfredo and feel as though my life was complete. Nothing is overly heavy, and I've had nothing but great service. Another perk that I enjoy here is that it's only for those 21+, so while yes, we all love kids, this is where you go for a night away from the kids. You can take your time learning that you will never look at mac and cheese the same (and be saddened the next time you have it from a box) and have dinner without the kid's menu. My only downfall is that I can not afford to go as often as I would like, my husband and I use this for special occasions, but believe me, I would go more if we could. Treat yourself here.

I'm a New York'er. I am going to try my best to take that hat off and rate Amalfi in a non-biased way (hence, the 4 starts). The ambiance is lovely...Quiet enough, dim enough, cozy enough... Waitstaff isn't in a hurry but they shouldn't be. Caesar salad was good (a little too heavy on the dressing). Pasta with white clam sauce and fresh Littlenecks was delicious...tons of clams, not too much garlic. House wine (cab) by the glass was pretty crummy. The prices are a bit hefty for Indianapolis but it was a good meal with large portions so none of us were disappointed. PS...No kid rule. Not 21? No entry. Weird rule but a-okay with me.

Despite the nice wait-staff and the owner/chef circulating about I have to give this a thumbs down. Maybe downtown you can charge $30 for a bottle of major-label wine you can buy at the supermarket for $8 but when you are located at the back of a derelict strip shopping center across from an abandoned gym and next to a really cheesy cinema/restaurant you really ought to be aggressive on your pricing especially when the food is mediocre. (That was the least expensive wine on the list, too.) There were some standouts, the grilled eggplant appetizer was quite good as was the sauteed squid. But what really set my wife and me off was their abuse of shellfish. Shrimp was cooked for days so they were tough as leather and about as tasty. Mussels the size of dimes also cooked so long they disintegrated. Our companions who had non-seafood pastas fared better but still not up to the pricing. I guess if your idea of good Italian comes from what was standard in the mid 1970's this is your place. Shame they don't feature 70's prices as well.

Finding a good place to eat your meal and to know that the people that have made it for you love doing it, then Amalfi is the place. It is hard to find and not what you may have expected it to look like from the outside, but walk in, I mean walk in slowly and enjoy the 1st smells that hit you. Order some wine eat some bread slowly and take your time and enjoy the room. Look over the menu and ask what the waiter may have to offer. Make your choice slowly and enjoy the fact that you have stepped out of Indian for a little bit of time and relax and enjoy. Remember to eat well and live well and please no chains!

Delicious Italian place in Indy! The staff is friendly, the Italian food delicious. One of the best Italian restaurants in the city. I've been here a number of times. Great for a nice night out or to celebrate a special occasion. Most recently had the Mostaccioli Bolognese and it was super tasty - exactly what I had hoped for. Paired with an Italian red wine recommended by the waiter, it made for a great meal.

I've been wanting to try this place out for quite some time. I love Capri and Matteo's and heard that Amalfi was run by another brother of the DiRosa family. Maybe my expectations were too high - but I definitely left disappointed with no desire to come back. The prices were higher and the portions were smaller than at Capri and Matteo's. I just don't think that this place gives me anything that I can't get at the others for less money! $19 for a small pasta plate? I suddenly get very high expectations and this place just didn't live up. Also, the bread was dry and came with no dipping sauce or butter. If you live on this side of town and want autentic Italian food that is close to home, then I'd say go. But otherwise I'd say get in the car and take a trip to Matteo's or Capri.

i was told "you'll never find a decent italian place in indianapolis". well i proved them wrong! being from NJ (right near NYC), i have a high standard for italian, and this place was definitely above the bar. everything that was ordered for my business dinner with 4 guests was excellent. the spicy seafood linguine was so good i wanted another serving. i HIGHLY recommend this place for it's good prices and better food!

Interesting location. Wouldn't think a higher end Italian restaurant would be stuffed behind a strip mall. Meal prices ranged from $15-$35. Sauces and pastas are all made in house. Our meals were all very tasty. I recommend the cheese tortellini and the antipast appetizer. Bread with the meal was so so. House Chianti was ok. Dimmed lighting but seemed more like a group restaurant atmosphere. Not loud but not intimate.

I wanted to love this place so much, but I just wasn't overwhelmed. We came for our four year wedding anniversary and on a Thursday evening at 6:00, the restaurant was deserted. As in, we were the ONLY customers. The interior was fancy, but in a Grandma's china cabinet kinda way (You get the vibe, right? Fancy, stuffy, fake flowers with a thin layer of dust). Our server was great and very helpful in explaining the menu items. She seemed to take pride in the fact that all the soups were meat-free broths, but as a proud carnivore, that really wasn't a selling point for me. Nonetheless, I tried the beef broth-free French onion soup. It was awful. If it wasn't a special night, I would have sent it back. Other than the cheese, it was completely flavorless and woefully undersalted. I had the salmon piccata special. Again, it was acceptable, but not amazing. The salmon was cooked well, but a piece of the bloodline was left in, making for a very chewy bite until I realized what it was. And the piccata sauce was too thin, so the noodles did not stay coated with sauce. It tasted like I was eating plain spaghetti. The final thing that rubbed me a bit the wrong was was the fact that during our meal, only two more tables were seated. The chef came out and spoke with one table for an extended amount of time. Then he left. With only two other tables, I felt slighted that he didn't bother to stop by our table even for a moment to ask if we enjoyed our entrees. This place does not allow children under three years old. This was fine for the evening, as we were on a date. But keep that in mind if you have kids. It used to be 21+ and I think they should have kept it that way. If parents of babies have to get a sitter, we certainly wouldn't want to be annoyed by bratty young children who just make the age cutoff.

This is a very classy Italian restaurant hidden away behind a strip mall. Note: It's not the most kid-friendly place. In fact, it used to be 21+, but the rules have been relaxed somewhat. It's now 3+ (toddler) up. I've always heard that the gnocchi is the best in the city (although exactly how many restaurants in Indy actually have gnocchi?). I was not disappointed. Soft pillows of homemade goodness bathed in a creamy, spicy red sauce. The complementary bread was obviously also homemade and was perfect for sopping up the delicious sauce. I sat at the bar and service was very polished, yet warm and friendly. When there are places like Amalfi around, I wonder why places like Olive Garden and Buca di Beppo even exist...

Great place. Warm ambiance, attentive wait staff, great food. Had the salad special with white anchovies, wonderful. Dinner was chicken with mushrooms, tomatoes and capers over linguine. Yummy with pasta cooked perfectly. I had to hit hard with salt and Parmesan, perhaps just to my taste. They also need to beef up Italian selections on wine list, wines by the glass list very limited. Would go back.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
