The food is the best Mexican style I've had in Elkhart or Goshen. Their chips and salsa along with the cheese dip are OUTSTANDING!! I love their enchiladas and Chimichangas, although their Chili relleno isn't what i was used to. I think their drinks are a bit overpriced and a little strong for my taste and they never salt their glasses enough for my margaritas. But overall, if you're looking for a great place for Mexican (American/Mexican) this place can't be beat. Finally, let me tell you, that menu is outstanding and incredibly diverse. The menu is like 10-12 pages long...it takes you a good 10-15 minutes just to peruse it. Trying to decide among all the choices is an exercise in stomach growling torture. I highly recommend anyone place this on their dining list.

The waitress Diane was friendly and excellent. Food in general was good, though a bit average. The margarita was ok, but they would not make it with real lime juice, and a better tequila. Tamales were not made in house. Salsa on the table had no real spice to it. What wasn't acceptable was using the bathroom and finding the floor being flooded by a worker with disinfectant (couldn't they do their mopping when the place closed?) Almost slipped and fell. Very average place - Will not make an effort to return.

So so...... food. waitress had no idea about what tequilas where served in their margaritas. They do not mix with your choice either. Would have no reason to come here again. :-(

This place is a joke! I ordered a taco salad and when I got it it was nothing to what the menu showed and described. The lettuce was soggy and there was nothing in the taco shell. I won't come back here again.

My daughter and I were there on 6/27/15. She ordered a shredded chicken dish and I had a dish with grilled chicken. As soon as we got home my daughter vomited twice. Food poisoning for sure. Won't go back

The best food and service! Everything is fantastic and consistent. We drive over from South Bend and pass several mediocre mexican restaurants along the way. Well worth the drive for us. Love this place!

This place is so good. Their shrimp is the best! Good is great, service is great I don't really have anything bad to say. Check out their chicken quesedilla and add shrimp, their lunch specials are well worth the money.

Love this place. Great food at a great price. I always get the steak burrito but can only finish about half because of its size. It's a fun place to take the fam too.

Good food and timely service. No smells other than that of delicious authentic Mexican food. Wife had the steak fajitas and loved it. I enjoyed a shredded beff chimi and chalupa, both were excellent! Delivered to our table in 6 minutes flat... Loved that too! It's a little off the beaten path but offers plenty of seating and a nice atmosphere. Def be back when we are in the area again!

Blech! Started eating my dinner and realized they had used processed, white American cheese on everything instead of real cheese. I asked the waiter to verify it....indeed they did. Last thing I am interested in is fake, processed pseudo-cheese on food. First and last time I visit, I am sorry to say. Wait time to give order was the longest I have experienced in quite a while. We won't be back.

Pork carnitas all the way! Service is nothing special, but food is awesome! Ask for hot salsa and mix with the standard mild salsa they always bring for a better flavor with some heat. Look for coupons in elkhart truth newspaper.

45 minutes of my life that I can't get back. We were not greeted while we waited to be seated. We sat down to a nice atmosphere, colorful and mildly busy but not busy by Saturday night at 7pm standards.. Our waitress was unfamiliar with the menu (try training the wait staff, they make better money and eliminates turnover.) she kept daydreaming while we were ordering. We got our drinks fast but she put water in a cup that was supposed to be sprite..but ok. the sour cream was liquid and had bubbles erupting. hmmm. sent it back. While we waited at this point 45 minutes, I decided I couldn't get these 45 minutes back and our family of 5 decided to leave. I asked to please pay for the pop we ordered and gave the waitress my credit card, she never came back...curious. I went to the cash registar, waited some more, and finally the hostess (god help us all if she's the manager) came up to me with my card. $9.58 for 4 pops? thats fine but I didn't get a I'm sorry or please come back again and try us or let me take care of the pop because we want you happy....INSTEAD I got a receipt shoved my way to sign, no pen offered and a bedazzled tall woman with red hair and smokers breath waiving my order ready to fight to the finish on how wrong I am about how long we waited and how this is they're busy season (what?)...Why were there so many tables open I thought. I decided I didn't want to argue with an aggressive hostess so I left and I didn't sign the credit card acknowledgment. a little class goes a long way people. Hey..EL Maguey staff and management, take a field trip to El Camino real on County road six and behold how it is supposed to be done!!!!

Their hours indicate they close at ten. Evidently, they actually close at 9:50. My family were regulars (1-3 times a week) until we arrived 10 minutes before closing one evening and were rudely told my the manager "kitchen is closed." The looks we received from the staff as we entered were unbelievably rude and unwelcoming. We will never go back.

Avoid avoid avoid. Inside smells strange and my torta had a sour taste served with way over cooked fries.

My boyfriend and I tried El Maguey last night, around 8:30pm. I was borderline unimpressed, my boyfriend was rather pleased. Unbelievable. Two people, same place, same time, two different experiences. There weren't many people in the restaurant that night, so we were sat immediately. Unfortunately, in a nearly vacant restaurant, we just so happened to be sat next to a group full of middle aged, drunk ladies, who insisted on laughing and talking as loud as they could. Our waitress was a young Mexican girl, who wasn't very knowledgeable, awkward with customers and seemed like she was not only inexperienced with waitressing, but also with the menu. The special margarita was very cheap tequila, and I ordered sugar rim and got salt. My boyfriend's draft beer was perfect and freezing cold. The chips and salsa was pretty good. The chips were the better of the two. The salsa was a little bland. As for our entrees, my boyfriend got a steak torta. When he asks for it (in the Spanish term), our waitress looked puzzled for a few seconds and leans in and asks, "Is that the steak one?" I ordered a combo plate, this one in particular came with a taco, burrito, and a toastada. My boyfriend loved his torta meal, and I must say I'm still jealous I hadn't ordered it myself. The steak was flavorful and tender. The whole torta was just lovely. The fries that came with the torta were crinkle cut and a little soggy. As for my combo plate, it was above edible. The toastada was the only enjoyable part of the meal. The burrito and taco meat were dry and almost unseasoned. The tortillas (one hard and one soft) were both incredibly soggy, and they were very dry. I could barely eat it. The prices are average, and I will try El Maguey again, at a different time of day and order a different type of meal. But as this review is only for our first time there, I wasn't very pleased at all. The women's restroom was pretty gross. The toilet, sink, and floors seemed like they were clean, but the walls were covered in cob webs and reeked of air fresheners. The decor is very upbeat and colorful. The chairs, booths, and tables are all different colors with different designs on them. It's very cute and takes a lot of time to take in.

Food was good. Service for us was slightly below par, but not terrible. I will come back for the Fried Banana Taquito- absolutely delicious!

Omg cheese dip. Pretty good, much closer to authentic than Hacienda. The shining star on the menu is the cheese dip. I would recommend ordering two, it literally disappears in minutes.

We've been here two or three times, and the service and food has always been very good. Not the type of Mexicna food we are used to in the Southwest, but still very good.

Wow, I can't believe we have not visited this place until today. Great food, great service (Lisa was great). There is a lot on the menu, but I am telling the food is great. Price are good also, we had 2 entree, a beer and it was $20.21. Good El Maguey Grill. Number 56 next time.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
